LENEXA, Kan. – Hays High freshman Izabel Schmidt finished sixth
in Saturday’s final of the 100 Yard Freestyle and seventh in the 50 Yard Freestyle
at the KSHSAA 5-1A State Swimming and Diving Championships at the Shawnee Mission
School District Aquatic Center.

After recording a preliminary time of 54.80, Schmidt broke
her own school record in the finals with a time of 54.41. Bishop Carroll junior Karis Reynaga won the
event with a time of 52.53.

Schmidt had a time of 25.11 in the 50 Yard Freestyle final. Andover
senior Natalie Nugent won the race with a time of 24.18.

🏊 HHS' Schmidt breaks own school record, sixth at state

KANSAS CITY, Mo (AP) — Kyle Garlick and Jose Miranda each drove in two runs, leading Devin Smeltzer and the Minnesota Twins past the Kansas City Royals 6-4 on Friday night.

Garlick put Minnesota on the scoreboard with an RBI single in a three-run first inning and added a sacrifice fly in the second. He was lifted for a pinch-hitter in the fourth.

Miranda had two hits, including a two-run double with two outs in the eighth that made it 6-3.

"It felt great getting that first hit out of the way,” Miranda said. "Then getting the second one in a clutch situation when the team needed me, it just felt great to come through.”

Smeltzer (1-0) allowed one run and five hits over 5 1/3 innings, throwing 74 pitches in his second major league start this season. He walked one and did not record a strikeout.

“Smeltzer was excellent,” Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said. “He is helping us win ballgames, which is all he cares about and all we care about. But he was efficient and did a really nice job.”

Jhoan Duran worked 1 2/3 hitless innings to set up Emilio Pagán for his sixth save. Pagán gave up three hits in the ninth, including Emmanuel Rivera's solo homer.

Carlos Santana also had a solo shot for the Royals, ending an 0-for-21 slump.

Gary Sánchez hit an RBI double in the Twins first and Gio Urshela added a sacrifice fly.

Royals starter Daniel Lynch (2-3) gave up four runs on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings.

“(Lynch) was having some trouble finishing tonight and there was a reason for that," Kansas City manager Mike Matheny said. “He had some tightness come up in his back and felt good enough to pitch, but it was something he had to work through. ... We tried to help him figure out a way to get through it and he got better as he went.”

Santana went deep in the seventh, and Whit Merrifield's sacrifice fly trimmed it 4-3.

Bobby Witt Jr. had a sac fly in the first for Kansas City.

Royals reliever Foster Griffin tossed a scoreless inning in his season debut after returning from Tommy John surgery in 2020. The left-hander made his major league debut and got his first win on his birthday in Detroit on July 27, 2020, before an extended stint on the injured list.

Royals: INF Adalberto Mondesi (left knee ACL tear) was transferred to the 60-day injured list and RHP Ronald Bolaños (undisclosed) was placed on the injured list.

⚾ Royals rally comes up short against Twins

EMPORIA – The Hays High boys track and field team had three
individual champions along with a relay and won the team title at the Emporia
5A Regional Friday at Emporia State’s Welch Stadium. It's the second straight year the Indians have won the regional meet, scoring 109
points, 38 ahead of second place Great Bend.

Jordan Dale won the high jump, Grayson Walburn the discus
and Wyatt Waddell the javelin. The 4x100 meter relay team of Trent Summers,
Archie Keamonie, Malik Bah and Chason VanDerWege also won gold.

VenDerWege qualified in three events. In addition to being
on the winning relay he finished second in the 200 meters and fourth in the 100
meters.

Great Bend won the girls team title with 151 1/2 points.
Hays High was third with ans were third with 60 1/2. 

The Indian girls qualified five individuals in six events
and two relays. Lilian McGrath, who qualified in four events, won the long jump.
She finished second in the 200 meters and was on the 4x100 relay which finished
second and the 4x400 which placed third. Broolynn Lewallen and Amelia Jaeger
both qualified in three events. Lewallen was third in the 100 meter hurdles and
on both relays. Jaeger was third in the 400 meters and also on both relays.

👟 HHS boys finish first, girls third at regional meet

SMITH CENTER – The Plainville boys and girls both brought
home the team titles at Friday’s Smith Center 2A Regional Track and Field Meet.
Both teams had two individual first place finishes and won a relay. The girls
scored 86 points, 20 better than Stanton County. Ellis finished fifth with 47
points. Trego was 12th with 13. The boys scored 65 points, five ahead of second
place Smith Center and seven better than third place Stanton County. Trego finished
in eighth place with 44 points. Ellis finished 11th with 20.

Plainville’s Jada Rathbun and Gracie Kerns both qualified
for next week’s state meet in three events. Rathbun finished second in the 100
and 200 meters. Kerns won the triple jump and was second in the long jump. Both
were on the winning 4x100 meter relay team along with Zoe Brown and Kadence Bruso.

Emma Rudman qualified in two events. She won the discus and
placed second in the shot put. Abby Reif was also a two event qualifier,
finishing second in the discus and third in the shot put.

Janey Eilers was the other Cardinals to quality for state after
a second place finish in the 100 meter hurdles.

Anders Dewey and Carter Cellmer are both headed to state in
three events. Dewey finished first in the 100 meter hurdles and second in the 300
hurdles. Cellmer was third in the long jump and triple jump. Both were on the
winning 4x100 meter relay team along with along with Ethan Hamilton and Draxtin
Hovis.

Braylon Bittel won the discus and was fourth in the shot
put. Madden Staab placed second in the high jump.

Ellis qualified six girls in seven events. Madi Russell finished
second in both the 1600 and 3200 meter runs, Emily Eck was second in the 400,
Makenna Kohl finished second in the 800, Addison Kohl third in the 100 hurdles,
Isabella Eck fourth in the high jump and Natalie North fourth in the discus. 

The Railer boys get three to state. Rex Johnson finished
second in the javelin, Dakota Metzler was third in the pole vault and Mason
Younger fourth in the pole vault.

The Trego boys qualified three individuals in five events
and one relay. Gunner Wilson finished second in the triple jump and fourth in
the 400 and was on the fourth place 4x100 relay along with Cole Feldt, Owen Day
and James Kriegh. Day was one of two regional champs, winning the javelin. Charlie
Russell won the shot put and finished second in the discus.

The Golden Eagle girls qualified two girls. Myuh Mattheyer
finished third in the triple jump and Annabelle Malsam fourth in the javelin.

title with 77 points, the Leopards had 69.5. Osborne finished third with 63.

County second with 50 and Quinter third with 49. &nbsp;

Colby Stull led the La Crosse boys, qualifying in four

on the 4x100 relay with Connor Schurr, Dayton Lantz and Bradi Schmidt. The
4x400 relay included Gage Burk, Will Ruess and Chris Schlueter. 

The Leopards 4x800 relay team of Do Castaneira, Will Rues,
Tristo Nelson and Kolton Maneth also finished second.

Gage Burk won two gold medals, winning both the high jump
and long jump.

Brennan Steinert won the 300 meter hurdles and was second in
the 100 hurdles and was the only girl to qualify for La Crosse.

Victoria’s Macy Hammerschmidt qualified in two events. She
won the long jump and finished second in the 100 meter dash where she was 1/100
th of a second behind Michaela Rippe of Rawlins County. The Knights Callie Lane
qualified in the 300 hurdles where she finished fourth.

Tanis Brungardt placed second in the shot put and is the
only boy from Victoria to qualify for state.

👟 La Crosse boys finish second behind Quinter at Triplains regional

After three successful seasons, Hays High boys basketball
coach Alex Hutchins is leaving. Hutchins was named the new head coach at Washburn Rural Thursday, pending board of education approval.

Hutchins has coached at Hays High the past four seasons, the
first as the head girls’ coach and the last three as the head boys coach. His
boys teams went 59-9 with three Western Athletic Conference titles and two
state tournament appearances.

The Scott City native was named the WAC Coach of the Year twice.

Prior to moving to Hays, Hutchins was the head boys coach in Minneapolis and Elizabeth, Colo.

Hutchins will take over his new coaching duties with the
Junior Blues this summer and teach physical education when the new school year
begins.

coach Alex Hutchins is leaving. Hutchins was named the new head coach at Washburn Rural Thursday, pending board of education approval.Hutchins has coached at Hays High the past four seasons, the

SALINA – The
Ellis baseball team defeated Canton-Galva 4-2 to advance to Thursday night’s
2-1A regional title game at Salina’s James Matson Field, but the Railers lost
to top-seed Little River 10-3 in the championship game.

The Railers
end their season with a 13-7. 

Game 1:
Ellis 4, Canton-Galva 2

Easton
Burton’s double with two outs in the second drove in Caleb Noble with the
go-ahead run and what proved to be winning run. 

The Railers
scored two in the first on a groundout and a wild pitch only to see the Eagles
answer with two in the top of the second.

Burton
picked up the complete game victory allowing two runs on eight hits with nine
strikeouts and one walk.

Game 2:
Little River 10, Ellis 3 
Ellis led 3-2 in the fifth, but the Redskins scored seven runs in the bottom of
the inning. The Redskins using two walks, three hit batters, three singles and
a double to blow the game open.

Ellis took
the early lead with a run in the first on Jarret Mader’s triple which scored
Easton Burton who opened the game with a single.

The Railers added
two more runs in the third on Mader’s two-run single to push their lead to 3-1.

Matt Ernst took

⚾ Railers come up short in regional final

PHILLIPSBURG – The TMP-Marian girls qualified four
individuals and one relay, the boys qualified two individuals and a relay to
next week’s 3A state track and field meet.

The Monarch girls finished in fourth place at Thursday’s
Phillipsburg 3A regional while the boys finished seventh. Smoky Valley won the
girls team title and Southeast of Saline the boys.

Senior Kassidi Yost led the Monarch girls, qualifying in
three events. Yost won the high jump, was on the third-place 4x100 meter relay
team and finished fourth in the 200 meters. 

Shalee Gottschalk and Emma Basgall both qualified in two
events. Gottschalk won the 100 meter hurdles, Basgall finished third in the
long jump. Both are also on the 4x100 relay.

Tessa Wentling was TMP’s other state qualifier after a second
place finish in the high jump.

Kade Harris qualified in four events for the TMP boys. He finished
third in the 100 meters and fourth in the 200 and long jump and was on the second
place 4x100 meter relay team.

Jace Wentling was also on the relay and finished second in
the long jump and fourth in the triple jump to qualify in three events.

ANDOVER – The Hays High girls’ soccer team saw their season
come to an end in the regional finals Thursday, losing 3-0 to Andover.

The Indians finish their season 13-4. The Trojans improve to
15-3 and advance to next week’s 5A state quarterfinals where they will play
Goddard-Eisenhower.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Luis Robert homered and drove in four runs as the Chicago White Sox rallied past the Kansas City Royals 7-4 Thursday to win the five-game series.

Robert delivered a pair of RBI singles before hitting a two-run homer into the left field stands in the eighth. His sixth home run of the season capped Chicago’s sixth come-from-behind win.

“I was trying to not strike out,” Robert said. “I was just trying to put the ball in play. I was expecting a fastball and he just made a mistake and I took advantage of it.”

Pinch-hitter Adam Engel gave the White Sox their first lead with an RBI single in the seventh off Gabe Speier (0-1) that broke a 4-all tie.

“Guys at first and third, I was already in a good situation there,” Engel said. “Just had to put the ball in play and keep it up the middle there the best that I can. In order to do that I just looked for a pitch over the plate and tried not do too much.”

Tim Anderson had two hits, two walks, two RBIs, and stole two bases, recording his 10th multi-hit outing in his last 18 games.

“I was just trying to get a run in and get that egg off the board,” Anderson said of stealing second and third ahead of Robert’s first RBI single, opening the White Sox scoring in the third. “I was being myself, playing my game, and having fun while doing it. Just putting us in the best position to be successful.”

Said Chicago manager Tony La Russa: “He’s very special. He’s as special as our fans think he is. The more people around the country that know it, the better.”

Chicago took three of five from the Royals. It was the first five-game series at Kauffman Stadium since Chicago also won three of five in April 2018.

Bennett Sousa (2-0) earned the victory as four Chicago relievers held Kansas City scoreless over the final four innings. Liam Hendriks worked around a pair of singles for his 12th save.

Hunter Dozier had three hits and drove in three runs for the Royals. He had a two-run homer in the first and an RBI single in the third.

Kansas City scored in each of the first three innings against Vince Velasquez, recording an extra-base hit in each frame. He went five innings, allowing four runs on six hits, fanning three.

“It seemed like my stuff was working very well today, but they were just guessing right,” Velasquez said. “Dozier was hunting fastballs the whole time. I could have been a bit better with executing fastballs up at the top of the zone. I’m not really happy with the outing.”

Royals starter Carlos Hernández struggled with his control, walking five and allowing five hits in three-plus innings.

“(Hernández’s) tempo was a little bit slow,” Royals catcher Sebastian Rivero said. “He was trying to think on too many things at one time. He was not feeling the ball. He couldn’t grip it the way he wanted to. The ball wasn’t doing what he wanted.”

Chicago loaded the bases on consecutive hits to start the fourth before Anderson hit a two-run single, driving Hernández from the mound.

⚾ Hernandez, bullpen struggle in Royals loss to White Sox

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Junior&nbsp;golfer&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6451">Bryce Cowan</a>&nbsp;represented the Fort Hays State men's golf team on the 2021-22 MIAA Academic Honor Roll, released Thursday by the league office. This is the fourth time Cowan has been listed on the conference's academic honor roll. The Topeka, Kan. native completed his undergraduate degree in management in 3.5 years and will continue to pursue a master's degree next year when he uses his final year of eligibility. On the course Cowan led the Tigers in scoring for the second year in a row with a stroke average of 76.81, including a season-low round of 3-under 69 at the Tulsa Cup (10/25/21). To be recognized on the Academic Honor Roll, one must have a grade point average used by the institution for purposes of NCAA academic certification of 3.00 at the certifying member institution. The individual must also have at least two terms of attendance at the certifying member institution, excluding summer terms. Transfers and true freshman are recognized at the conclusion of the school year, after they meet the two terms of attendance requirement.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Junior&nbsp;golfer&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6451">Bryce Cowan</a>&nbsp;represented the Fort Hays State men's golf team on the 2021-22 MIAA Academic Honor Roll, released Thursday by the league office. This is the fourth time Cowan has been listed on the conference's academic honor roll. The Topeka, Kan. native completed his undergraduate degree in management in 3.5 years and will continue to pursue a master's degree next year when he uses his final year of eligibility. On the course Cowan led the Tigers in scoring for the second year in a row with a stroke average of 76.81, including a season-low round of 3-under 69 at the Tulsa Cup (10/25/21). To be recognized on the Academic Honor Roll, one must have a grade point average used by the institution for purposes of NCAA academic certification of 3.00 at the certifying member institution. The individual must also have at least two terms of attendance at the certifying member institution, excluding summer terms. The TMP-Marian Monarchs baseball team is headed back to the 3A state tournament after picking up a pair of regional wins Wednesday in Great Bend.

Championship game: TMP 12, Larned 3 After a little bit of a slow start the TMP offense came to life in the bottom of the fifth inning, exploding for seven runs on their way to a 12-3 win over Larned in the 3A regional championship game.

For the third straight game the Monarchs scored two runs in the first innings thanks to an RBI single by Jace Wentling and an error.

Wentling, who struck out the side in the first, struggled in the second inning allowing Larned to come back at tie the game at two. They took advantage of a hit-by-pitch and a pair of walks in the inning.

A bases loaded balk by the Larned started scored the Monarchs third run of the game in the second inning. But Larned again had answer tying the game at three in the top of the third.

The big inning came in the bottom of the fifth for TMP. The Monarchs sent 12 men to the plate, scoring seven runs to take a 10-3 lead.

In the inning the Monarchs took advantage of four walking, that including Garrett Feauto's bases loaded walk to put TMP up 4-3.

Chet Irvin followed the Feauto walk with a pinch-hit two-run single putting TMP up 6-3.&nbsp;

Joey Mindrup singled in a run and then Griffin Schumacher plated two more with singe to left putting TMP up 9-3.

Schumacher scored the 10th TMP run on a throwing error by the catcher for a 10-3 TMP lead.

The Monarchs added two more in the bottom of the sixth inning to go up 12-3.

Jace Wentling got the win on the mound for the Monarchs as he improved to 3-3. He allowed just one hit and two earned runs over five innings for the win. He struck out five but walked four and hit two-batters.

Wentling, Nick Helget and Joey Mindrup all scored three times and Griffin Schumacher and Chet Irvin both had two RBI's.&nbsp;

Regional Semifinal: TMP 6, Beloit 5 In the first game of the day TMP starter Caden Morgan pitched his first career complete game and he and Jace Wentling each drove in two in the 6-5 TMP win.

After Morgan struck out the side in order in the first TMP wasted little time getting in the score colunm. Wentling tripled home a run and Morgan follwed with a sacrifice fly to put TMP up 2-0.

In the third inning Wentling and Morgan added their second RBI's of the game for a 4-1 lead.&nbsp;

Beloit plated three runs in the top of the fourth tying the game at 4.

In the bottom of that inning Griffin Schumacher singled home a run to put TMP up 5-4. He would later scored on an error for a 6-4 lead.

Beloit got a run in the top of the seventh and they got the tying run to third but Morgan retired the strikeout for the TMP win.

Morgan allowed three earned runs, five total runs on four hits in seven innings. Morgan improved to 4-0 on the mound.&nbsp;

TMP is 14-5 heading into the state tournament in Manhattan May 26 &amp; 27.
