After three successful seasons, Hays High boys basketball coach Alex Hutchins is leaving. Hutchins was named the new head coach at Washburn Rural Thursday, pending board of education approval.
Hutchins has coached at Hays High the past four seasons, the first as the head girls’ coach and the last three as the head boys coach. His boys teams went 59-9 with three Western Athletic Conference titles and two state tournament appearances.
The Scott City native was named the WAC Coach of the Year twice.
Prior to moving to Hays, Hutchins was the head boys coach in Minneapolis and Elizabeth, Colo.
Hutchins will take over his new coaching duties with the Junior Blues this summer and teach physical education when the new school year begins.
