WICHITA – The TMP-Marian girls had four individuals place in
five events and the boys had two individuals place in three events at the state
track and field meet in Wichita on Friday.

TMP’s Jace Wentling won the individual title in the boys
long jump (23’5.5”) and finished third in the boys triple jump (43’0.75”)

Jeff Heimann brought home a silver medal in the boys pole
vault (13’6”).

Ian Chiu finished 10th and Kade Harris was 13th
in the boys long jump.

The TMP boys placed seventh with 24 team points.

Abby Rueschhoff medaled in a pair of events for the Lady Monarchs.

She finished fifth in the triple jump (34’10.5”) and sixth
in the long jump (16’1.25”).

Kassidi Yost was fourth (5’00”) and Makinsey Schlautman
fifth (5’00”) in the girls high jump.

Emilee Lane also medaled for TMP with an eighth place
finished in the 800 meters (2:27.95).

Sasha Wasinger was 10th (34’1.5”) in the girls
shot put.

The TMP girls finished 14th with 17 team points.

🏃TMP boys place 7th; girls 14th at state

On the final day of 5A baseball in Kansas, the Hays High were one of four teams with two game left to play. Andover Central, Maize South, and Blue Valley Southwest joined the Indians in the semifinals at Eck Stadium in Wichita.

Hays surrendered five runs in the bottom of the second inning on their way to a 6-4 loss to the top seeded Andover Central Jaguars. Hays left runners in scoring position in the first, third and fourth innings before breaking through in the fifth.

Carson Spray, Dalyn Schwarz and Ben Krannawitter all singled to open the fifth. Spray scored the Indians first run on Krannawitter's hit. Two batters later Dylan Dreiling crushed a three-run homerun to right field for a 6-4 score.

The Indians put the tying runs on the base paths in the top of the fifth inning but could not take advantage as Andover Central went to the bullpen. Alex Ronk for the Jaguars set the next seven batters down in order to earn his eighth save of the season.

Carson Spray took the loss going an inning and two-thirds. Dalton Dale pitched a season high four and two-thirds of one run ball. Jacob Horn moved to 8-0 with the victory.

Garrett Wellbrock used all of his 105 pitch allowance to throw his first career complete game on the way to an 11-2 win over Maize South in the third place game Friday afternoon.

Wellbrock worked around multiple baserunners in four of the six innings to allow only two total runs, one of which was unearned following a throwing error.

Hays scored in four of six innings of off six different Maize South pitchers. The Indians took the lead on a passed ball in the second inning to score Dalton Dale. The Mavericks tied the game at one in the top of third before Hays scored two more in the bottom of the inning to take the lead for good.

Hays added three more in the fourth and five runs in the fifth for the final difference at 11-2.

Hays finishes the year at 19-4 and place at the state tournament for the first time since 2000.

The team's .471 batting average ranks third best for a season.

Dylan Dreiling tied the school record for single season wins by a pitcher at nine. Also on the mound Dreiling set a new school record for season ERA at 0.52. His opponent batting average of .114 was fourth best for a single season. He also tied for seventh with 35 hits in a single season.&nbsp;

Dalton Dale finished the year with a .463 batting average food for 20th best in a single season. Dreiling batted .427 good for 36th best.

Dreiling moved into a tie for fourth with seven career home runs.

Dawson VonFeldt tied for fourth in single season walks at 23 and Garrett Wellbrock walked 22 times good for a sixth place tie.

🏃Track and Field Opens Competition at Outdoor Championships

WICHITA – The Hays High boys collected four second place
finishes and had nine individual and a relay team earn finish in the top eight
on their way to a fourth place finish at the 5A state track and field meet in
Wichita Thursday.

Jaren Kanak collected a team-high four medals. He finished
second in both the 100 meter dash (10.58 seconds) and 200 meter dash (22.06). 

He also finished fifth in the boys long jump (20’11”) and
was a member of the 4x100 meter relay team that finished third. He was joined
on that team by Logan Casper, Bryce Salmans and Malik Bah.

Trey Adams also earned a silver medal in the boys discus

finishes and had nine individual and a relay team earn finish in the top eight
on their way to a fourth place finish at the 5A state track and field meet in

🏃HHS boys finish 4th at state

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Austin Meadows homered and had four RBIs, Shane McClanahan went five scoreless innings, and the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Kansas City Royals 7-2. 

Tampa Bay has won two straight after Kansas City stopped the Rays’ 11-game winning streak in the series opener Tuesday night. 

Meadows had a two-run triple in the first and connected on a third-inning two-run homer.

GREAT BEND – The Ellis Railroaders scored four runs in the
bottom of the fifth inning to rally from a one-run deficit and then held off a
late rally for a 5-4 win over the Maranatha Academy Eagles Thursday in the
opening round of the 2-1A state baseball tournament in Great Bend.

Ellis (20-0) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first
inning on a wild pitch.

Maranatha Academy took advantage of an error in the top of
the sixth inning to tie the game at one. They took the lead on a single.

Down 2-1 the first three hitters of the Ellis fifth inning
and then with one out Tegan Cain walked with the bases loaded to tie the game
at two. Easton Burton followed that with a two-run single putting Ellis up 4-2.


Ellis added a fourth run in the inning to take a 5-2 lead.

The Eagles got a pair of runs in the top of the seventh
before Burton got a strikeout to close out the Railers 5-4 win.

Cain allowed two unearned runs on four hits in sixth innings
with 11 strikeouts for the win for Ellis.

Burton was 1-for-3 with two RBI’s and Jarret Mader added an
RBI as well.

Ellis will take on the winner of Valley Falls and St. Mary’s
Colgan.

The other semifinal game will feature the number two seed
Sedgwick after a win over Belle Plain against the six-seed Spearville who upset
the three-seed Colony-Crest.

Hays High made their 13th appearance at the Kansas High School State Baseball Tournament on Thursday. Eck Stadium on the campus of Wichita State University played host to the 5A tournament.

The Indians opened with the champion of the two most recent state tournaments Topeka Seaman. The Vikings won the 5A title in 2018 and 2019 before COVID-19 stopped the 2020 season.

Hays High took advantage of two Topeka Seaman errors to score four runs in the first two innings for a 4-1 lead. Dylan Dreiling and Garrett Wellbrock scored an a throwing error for the game's first two runs in the first. Dalyn Schwarz and Ben Krannawitter scored on the same passed ball and error play in the second.

Garrett Wellbrock drove in Dawson VonFeldt on a single for a 5-1 advantage after two innings.&nbsp;

The Indians added to the lead following a thirty minute rain delay in fifth when Krannawitter scored on a single from Dreiling. The Vikings got a single tally back in the bottom of the sixth on a wild pitch.

Dylan Dreiling had thrown 104 pitches through six innings, allowing him to come back for one more hitter in the seventh. He retired the leadoff batter and ended his outing allowing two runs on five hits. Dreiling struck out six and walked four for the victory. The win is Dreiling ninth of the season tying Jay Koerner (1982) and Jason Goetz (1991) for the most wins in a single season.

Dalton Dale walked the first batter he faced in relief, then retired the final two. The first on a diving play in right field from Krannawitter. The second on a ground ball to end the game.

Hays improves to 18-3 on the year and advances out of the first round of the state baseball tournament for the first time since 2000. Topeka Seaman falls to 19-4.

The Indians will face the top overall seed Andover Central (22-1) in the semifinals at 11:00. The Jaguars won 6-0 over St. James Academy (9-14). ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — The Tampa Bay Rays' 11-game winning streak came to an end Tuesday night when Brad Keller pitched seven strong innings and Salvador Perez hit a tiebreaking RBI single to give the Kansas City Royals a 2-1 victory.

Rich Hill struck out a career-high 13 for the Rays. Tampa Bay's winning string was the second-longest in club history, one shy of the record set in 2004 by the then-Devil Rays managed by Lou Piniella.

“We had a great run,”Hill said. “We'll start another one tomorrow."

Tampa Bay center fielder Kevin Kiermaier called the stretch “incredible.”

“I think we were all waiting for, not necessarily an 11-game win streak, but to kind of bust out of the shell and get guys swinging the bats and just feeding off our pitchers," Kiermaier said.

Keller (4-4) allowed one run, four hits, four walks and struck out seven. Jake Brentz went 1 1/3 innings before Kyle Zimmer got two outs to get his second save.

“Brad was as good as I've seen him,” Royals manager Mike Matheny said. “I thought he had very good rhythm. I thought his tempo, his execution on his fastball and slider were good, Probably the best changeups we've seen from him. If he can continue to development that pitch, it's going to help everything else.”

Perez put the Royals up 2-1 on a sixth-inning single off Hill (3-2).

Hill gave up two runs and six hits, and didn't issue a walk over eight innings. Over his last six starts, the lefty has allowed five earned runs over 35 2/3 innings, but has a 2-2 record.

Hill became the oldest player to appear in a game with the Rays at 41 years, 75 days. Hall of Famer Wade Boggs was 41 years, 73 days old when he played his final game on Aug. 27, 1999.

Hill retired his first 10 batters before Carlos Santana tied it 1 in the fourth with a home run. It was his 250th homer, which moved him within one of tying Tony Clark for 13th place all-time among switch-hitters.

The Royals have won seven of 10 following an 11-game losing streak.

Brett Phillips had a single leading off the Rays third that went off Keller’s glove, stole second, went to third on a grounder and scored on a hit by Yandy Díaz.

Kansas City shortstop Adalberto Mondesi, reinstated from the 10-day injured list after missing the first 45 games this season with a right oblique sprain, doubled twice in four at-bats. He was hurt in the Royals’ final spring training game on March 29.

“Just good to have him back,” Matheny said. “We know what kind of dangerous player he is as far as what he can do at the plate, what he can do on the bases and defensively, too. It's exciting to have him back.”

Hill joined Randy Johnson, Nolan Ryan and Gaylord Perry as the only pitchers to strikeout 13 or more at age 41 years, 75 days or older. Ryan did it 13 times.

Kiermaier made a nifty running catch on Andrew Benintendi’s drive to the left-center field warning track in the second. He made the grab behind left fielder Austin Meadows, who was also trying to track down the ball. Kiermaier also made a leaping catch at the wall on Benintendi's fly in the eighth.

“That's what I love doing ... I love to make plays for our pitchers," Kiermaier said. “It would have been a lot cooler if won tonight.”

The Rays reached the 85 percent vaccination level that allows MLB protocols to be relaxed.

The players and staff are no longer required to wear masks in the dugout.

“I’m excited about that,” manager Kevin Cash said. “We’ve got to keep adhering to protocols and the guidelines that are in place.”

Royals: Matheny said OF Hunter Dozier (concussion), who is at Triple-A Omaha, “seems to be getting his timing right.”

Rays: 1B Ji-Man Choi, who left Monday’s game against Toronto with right knee soreness, was the DH.

Lucas Scheufler of Wichita-Trinity Academy shot a 68 on Monday and 69 on Tueday
and won the 3A title at 5-under, five strokes better than Marysville’s Jackson
Rader. 
Sante Fe Trail won the 3A team title with a 639, 14 strokes better then Cheney.
Cimarron finished is sixth place.

finished in 10th place as a sophomore in 2019, won by five strokes over Salina-Sacred
Heart senior Caleb Gilliland. 

Krob had five birdies and three bogeys in his
final round. All three of the bogeys were on par 3s. Four of the five birdies came on par 5s.

Brady Frickey of Ellis closed with a final round 73 and tied for seventh at
16-over. 

Hoxie finishes fourth, Planville fifth and Ellis sixth in the final team
standings. Salina-Sacred Heart was the runaway team champ with a 621,
outdistancing second place Sterling by 63 strokes. Olathe-Heritage Christian
Academy finished third.
