The Osborne boys had six individual medal winners and two relay
teams finish in the top eight in class 1A as they bring home the top finish of
all area teams from the state track and field championship at Cessna Stadium in
Wichita.

Mason Schurr won the 400 (49.69) meters and he was a member
of the 4x100 relay team that also claimed the state championship (44.52).

He also finished second in the both 100 (10.85) and the 200
(22.75Q) meters.

The Osborne girls won the 1A 4x800 meter relay (10:29.28).
They finished eighth as a team.

In class 2A the Plainville girls finished seventh as team. 

They had two runner-up finishers and five total medal winners.


Emma Rudman finished second in the discus (130-02) and Abby
Reif was fourth (125-07). Reif finished third in the shot put (37-02.00).

Garcie Kerns finished fifth in the long jump (16-8.25) and
seventh in the triple jump (34-10-25).

The 4x100 meter relay team placed second (51.36).

The Plainville boys also finished seventh as a team. They
had five individuals and one relay team finish in the top eight.

Braylon Bittel won the 2A discus (150-08). 

Anders Dewey brought home a second place finish in the 300
hurdles (41.79) and finished fourth in the 110 hurdles (15.96).

Carter Cellmer placed sixth in the triple jump (42-11.75)
and Madden Stabb was eighth in the high jump (5-10).

The boys 4x100 meter relay placed fifth (45.16).

The Ellis girls had four medal winners and finished in a tie
for 12th as a team.

Emily Eck finished third in the 400 (1:02), Isabella Eck was
sixth in the high jump (5-00) and Madi Russell placed third in the 3200 meters
(12:09.25) and fourth in the 1600 meters (5:35.77).

Ellis’ Rex Johnson placed third in the javelin (162-03) and
Mason Younger and Dakota Metzler finished in a tie for sixth (11-00).

The La Crosse boys finished in a tie for eighth.

They had six individual and two relay teams earn medals.

Colby Stull placed sixth in the 100 meters (11.32) and
eighth in the 200 meters (24.98).

Tristen Wilhelm placed fourth in the wheelchair 400 meters
(1:30.73) and fifth in the wheelchair 100 meters (21.05).

Gage Burk was third in the high jump (6-04) and Haden
Sherman fifth in the 300 meter hurdles (42.36).

The boys 4x400 meter relay team was fourth (3:38.48) and
fifth in the 4x100 relay (45.36).

Victoria’s Macy Hammerschmidt brought home a pair of medals.

She won the 1A girls long jump (17-08.75) and was second in
the 100 meters (12.12). The top three runners in the race all broke the state
tournament record.

The Trego boys finished 12th as a team in class 2A.

Gunner Wilson finished third in the triple jump (44-01-50)
and sixth in the 400 meters (53.04). 

Charlie Russell placed sixth in the shot put (44-09.25) and
Owen Day was sixth in the javelin (157-02)

Stockton’s Rylan Basart won the 1A javelin (190-01) and
Kaelyn Means was second in the discus (127-10).

WICHITA – A year after finishing runner-up Hays High senior
Jordan Dale earned a first place finish in the 5A boys high jump as the Indians
finished ninth as a team with seven individuals and a relay team earning top
eight finishes at the state track and field championship Friday and Saturday at
Cessna Stadium in Wichita. 

The Hays High girls had one individual and one relay team place
inside the top eight and finished in a tie for 29th. 

Dale recorded a height of 6’10 and claimed this title on a
jump off.

The Indian boys had three medal winners in the boys javelin.
Wyatt Waddell finished fifth (164-08), Nate Brooks finished seventh (160-08)
and Dalton Meyers was eighth (153-00).

Grayson Walburn finished sixth in the discus (154-00),Harley
Zimmerman was sixth in the pole vault (12-06.00) and Keamonie Archie placed eighth
in the long jump (20-07.25)

👟Dale wins 5A high jump; HHS boys 9th at state

ALLENDALE, Mich. - The Fort Hays State track and field teams added five All-Americans and broke one school record on the final day of competition at the 2022 NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships on Saturday (May 28). The Tigers finished the week with five first team All-Americans, six second team All-Americans and two school records. The Tigers finished with 14 points on the women's side and five from the men's team, placing 18th in the women's standings and 39th in the men's rankings. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6549">Mattie Rossi</a>&nbsp;wrapped up her busy week with a pair of All-America honors, one first team and one second team. The junior finished as the national runner-up in the 400m hurdles, breaking her own school record with a time of 58.11 to finish second and contribute eight team points for FHSU. The time ranks 24th all-time in Division II. Earlier in the day Rossi finished ninth in the 100m hurdles with a time of 19.14 to grab second team All-American status. Rossi also earned second team All-American accolades in the heptathlon earlier in the week, giving her six All-America honors all-time. After picking up second team All-America status last season,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6528">Addie Berens</a>&nbsp;earned a spot on the podium in the javelin this year with a top heave of 153-4. The sophomore placed fourth, contributing five team points to the Tiger team score. This is the 40th Division II All-American honor for an FHSU javelin thrower, including 26 from the women's team and 14 from the men's squad. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6538">Lyric Holman</a>&nbsp;sprinted her way onto the All-American podium for the third time in her career after placing eighth in the 100m dash finals. The junior crossed the line in 11.96, grabbing her seventh All-America honor overall (three first team, four second team). <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6537">Alexandra Hart</a>&nbsp;finished 12th in the high jump after clearing the 5-7 bar to collect second team All-America honors for the second time this season (9th indoors). It is the sophomore's fourth All-America award in as many tries including a pair of first team honors from last season (champion indoors, 7th outdoors). <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6510">Xavier Robinson</a>&nbsp;recorded a leap of 48-1.25 in the triple jump, finishing in 14th place in the country. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6511">Robbie Schmidt</a>&nbsp;wrapped up an impressive career as a Tiger with a 15th-place in the 5,000m run with a time of 14:22.05. Earlier in the week the senior picked up second team All-America honors in the 10,000m run. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6530">Rhyann Brown</a>&nbsp;placed 17th in the javelin at the national level for the second year in a row after a top mark of 136-7. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6491">David Enns</a>&nbsp;wrapped up his career as a Tiger with a 19th-place finish in the javelin. The senior posted a top toss of 195-3 on his first attempt of the day. ALLENDALE, Mich. - The Fort Hays State track and field teams added five All-Americans and broke one school record on the final day of competition at the 2022 NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships on Saturday (May 28). The Tigers finished the week with five first team All-Americans, six second team All-Americans and two school records. The Tigers finished with 14 points on the women's side and five from the men's team, placing 18th in the women's standings and 39th in the men's rankings. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6549">Mattie Rossi</a>&nbsp;wrapped up her busy week with a pair of All-America honors, one first team and one second team. The junior finished as the national runner-up in the 400m hurdles, breaking her own school record with a time of 58.11 to finish second and contribute eight team points for FHSU. The time ranks 24th all-time in Division II. Earlier in the day Rossi finished ninth in the 100m hurdles with a time of 19.14 to grab second team All-American status. Rossi also earned second team All-American accolades in the heptathlon earlier in the week, giving her six All-America honors all-time. 👟Churchman 5th, Two Other All-Americans on Day 2 of Nationals

The Hays High baseball team landed three players on Kansas Association of Baseball Coaches 5A All-State team released Friday evening. Senior standout Dylan Dreiling was named the 5A Player of the Year and was named to the first team as an outfielder and honorable mention as a pitcher. He's joined by fellow seniors Garrett Wellbrock and Noah Weimer who were both honorable mention.

It's the second consecutive year Dreiling has been honored by the KABC after being named a first team pitcher in 2021.

Despite battling injuries most of the season, Dreiling set new school records with a .597 batting average and 10 home runs. He also drove in a team-high 38 runs. He was named to the KABC first team as an outfielder. Dreiling was also named the Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year.

Wellbrock was named honorable mention as both a middle infielder and pitcher. He finished the season with a .359 batting average with 15 RBIs and a team-high 29 runs scored. He went 6-1 on the mound with complete games in six of his seven starts and a 2.06 ERA over a season-high 51.0 innings pitched.

Weimer batted .368 and drove in seven runs while scoring 17 times. starting the entire season a second base.

👟 Strong start to outdoor nationals for Tiger track and field

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Whit Merrifield drove in two runs with a double and scored on Bobby Witt Jr.’s double, as the Kansas City Royals rallied for three runs in the eighth inning and beat the Minnesota Twins 3-2 Thursday night.

Josh Staumont (2-1) worked a scoreless inning and picked up the win. Scott Barlow escaped a bases-loaded jam in the eighth and stranded two on base in the ninth to earn his fifth save as the Royals snapped a seven-game losing streak.

Devin Smeltzer pitched seven scoreless innings for the Twins before Tyler Duffey (2-3) let the lead slip away in the eighth. Emmanuel Rivera singled with one out and moved to second on Ryan O’Hearn’s two-out, pinch-hit single. Merrifield then lined a double into the gap in right-center to tie the score at 2. After Andrew Benintendi walked, Witt doubled to left-center, scoring Merrifield with the go-ahead run.

“You hope to have that big hit — that’s the thing that’s eluded us more than anything else. But (Merrifield) comes through there,” Royals manager Mike Matheny said. “Then Bobby ... just shortens up, doesn’t try to do too much, just uses the middle of the field and the next thing you know, we’ve got an opportunity to walk away with a win.”

The Twins tried to rally in their half of the eighth, loading the bases on singles by Gary Sánchez, Gio Urshela and Luis Arraez with no outs. But Barlow came on to strike out the next two batters and retired Max Kepler on a soft grounder to first base, leaving the bases loaded.

Minnesota put runners on the corners with two outs in the ninth as well, but Witt made a nice play on Urshela's hard-hit grounder for the final out.

Barlow threw a season-high 41 pitches to earn the six-out save. He got plenty help from his catcher, rookie MJ Melendez, who blocked four pitches in the dirt in the eighth inning, all with the tying run on third base.

“To be able to get through that, Scotty’s got to make great pitches, but he’s also got to have a lot of faith in MJ,” Matheny said. “And MJ did a phenomenal job keeping the ball in front and giving Scott confidence because he has to be able to do that.”

Smeltzer handcuffed the Royals all night, relying mostly on a mix of fastballs and changeups. He allowed two hits and walked one while striking out six. He was starting in place of Joe Ryan, who was added to the COVID-19 IL on Wednesday. In his most recent appearance, Smeltzer held the Royals to one run over 5 1/3 innings in a 6-4 Twins victory on May 20.

“I don’t know if you can go out there and pitch much better than he did,” Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said. “He did a very, very nice job in every way. The opposition looked uncomfortable in a lot of at-bats. He kept them off-balance nicely and missed a few bats as well. Everything we could ask for from him.”

Meanwhile, Royals starter Daniel Lynch also kept the Twins in check, giving up two earned runs on seven hits with two walks and six strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings.

Kansas City's Brewer Hicklin made his major league debut on Thursday, batting ninth and playing center field. He was hitting .266 with five home runs and 24 RBIs in 42 games at Triple-A Omaha this year.

Hicklin struck out looking in his first two at-bats against Smeltzer and was replaced by a pinch hitter in the eighth inning.

⚾ Royals rally in the eighth inning to earn victory over Twins

MANHATTAN – The TMP-Marian pitchers combined to walk eight
and the offense was held in check for most of the day as they drop their state
quarterfinal matchup to Girard 8-2 Thursday atToiton Family Stadium in Manhattan.

The Monarchs managed to get a couple of runners on in their
half of the first inning thanks to a Mark Rack single and a Caden Morgan walk
but Girard starter Trevor Amershek struck out the side in the first and again
in the second. 

After allowing those two runners to reach in the first inning Amershek retired 17 of the next 19 Monarchs hitters until he was lifted in the seventh
inning with two men on base. Amershek allowed two runs on four TMP hits in 6 2/3 innings to earn the
win.

On the other side TMP starter Cade Morgan struggled with his
command. He walked a career-high seven in three innings and allowed six runs
over three innings in the loss.

The big inning came for the Trojans in the bottom of the
second when Morgan walk four of the first five hitters he faced to start the
inning. All four came in to score putting Girard up 4-0 through two.

Morgan struggled with command again in the fourth inning,
walking three straight to start the inning. Two more runs scored giving Girard a 6-0 lead.

The Trojans led 8-0 after scoring two in the sixth inning.

The Monarchs bats woke up in the top of the seventh scoring
two runs on two hits and taking advantage of three walks.

Garrett Feauto singled with one out, Joey Mindrup added a
two-out single and Griffin Schumacher walked to load the bases.

Nick Herrman and Mark Rack both walked with the bases loaded
cutting it to 8-2 but the rally was cut short in the next at bat with an 8-2
TMP loss.

The Monarchs were held to just the two runs on four hits and
struck out 11 times as a team.

His squad reached the Region IX title game this last season and hosted the 2019 regional tournament before playing in the district tournament that year. The Trojans won the Empire Conference Championship in Wichert's first year at the helm. "We believe Coach Wichert's character traits, work ethic and coaching background align well with the type of leadership needed for our baseball program," said Hammeke. "His passion for coaching and developing young men on and off the field will be felt by all associated with the program." The Trojans posted a 44-17 record this past season while ranking third in NJCAA Division I with a team batting average of .388. His players earned nine All-Region IX honors in 2022, including Pitcher of the Year Isaac Gallegos and Freshman of the Year Benji Suave. Wichert's squad earned recognition as an NJCAA Academic Team of the Year in 2020 and 2021 while 19 individuals earned NJCAA All-Academic Honors (three 1st team, 10 2nd team, six 3rd team). Hays High senior Dalton Dale has committed to play baseball at Neosho County Community College.

Dale was recently named to the Western Athletic Conference second team after hitting
.253 with six doubles, four home runs and 24 RBIs. 

He was an All-WAC and All-State selection as a junior.

PHOENIX (AP) — Pavin Smith and pinch-hitter Jordan Luplow homered in a five-run sixth inning as the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Kansas City Royals 8-6 on Tuesday night.

Arizona hit four homers and won for the fifth time in six games. The Diamondbacks lead the National League with 60 homers.

Arizona manager Torey Lovullo doesn't want his team to be considered a homer-heavy club.

“I don’t want to say that’s who we are," Lovullo said. "I don’t want us to be known as a home run-hitting team. I want us to be known as good hitters who hit home runs because we are balanced and through the baseball. Our mindset is hard line drives in the middle of the diamond, 90 miles an hour or greater, and good things will take off from there.”

Daulton Varsho and David Peralta also homered for the Diamondbacks, who have 15 homers in their last six games, including seven in a 10-6 victory against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field last Friday. They have 11 comeback victories.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - A survey of college athletes by the NCAA suggests that rates of mental exhaustion, anxiety and depression remain as much as twice as high as pre-pandemic levels, but feelings of hopelessness have improved. 

The results of the study, a follow-up to two conducted in the fall of 2020, were released Tuesday. The data is based on input from more than 9,800 respondents and shows that mental health concerns remain sharply elevated. 

The survey was conducted from Nov. 17-Dec. 13 and was designed by NCAA research in collaboration with the NCAA Sport Science Institute and the Division I, II and III Student-Athlete Advisory Committees.

The results show that 69% of women’s sports participants and 63% of men’s sports participants agreed or strongly agreed that they know where to go on campus if they have mental health concerns. However, less than half of each said they would agree or strongly agree that they would feel comfortable seeking support from a mental health provider on campus. 

The NCAA constitution mandates that each member school create an environment that reinforces the need for and encourages the availability of resources for the physical and mental health concerns within athletics.

Since March 1, at least five athletes at NCAA member institutions have died by suicide, highlighting the growing need for awareness of services available on campus as students juggle the stresses of athletic competition, expectations, academics, a social life and plans for the future. 

“A lot of what influences the direction on this topic is what sort of conversations are happening on a campus surrounding mental health,” Scott Hamilton, a mental health clinical counselor at DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana, said in a new release. “Are there groups on campus, whether through the athletics department or through counseling services, using their voice to help reduce the stigma?” 

Working with teams, Hamilton said, has been effective in changing mindsets. 

"When college campuses are willing to have open conversations about the importance of mental health, taking care of yourself mentally can ease the apprehension of student-athletes seeking help,” he said. 

According to survey data, 65% of female athletes and 58% of male athletes agreed or strongly agreed they take the mental health concerns of teammates seriously, and 56% of both sexes said they know how to help a teammate with a mental health concern.

The Ken B. Jones Award has seen a two-year absence since the COVID-19 pandemic changed the format for this honor. In 2019-20, the conference instead recognized both a male and female fall student-athlete of the year and winter student-athlete of the year. The spring season that year was cut short due to the pandemic and spring student-athletes did not have an opportunity to build a resume of accomplishments for the annual Ken B. Jones Award. In 2020-21, fall student-athletes did not have an opportunity to compete, so the conference honored winter and spring student-athletes of the year. This will be the first time since 2018-19 that the format returns to an award given to just one male and female student-athlete for all seasons. Randall was the MIAA Women's Winter Student-Athlete of the Year in 2020-21. The winners will be announced at the 2021-22 MIAA Awards Celebration presented by Husch Blackwell on Monday, June 6 at the Little Theatre inside historic Municipal Auditorium in downtown Kansas City. Fort Hays State is one of two schools with two finalists this year, with Nebraska-Kearney also sending a pair of athletes to the Awards Celebration. Fort Hays State has now had 15 Ken B. Jones Award finalists since joining the MIAA in 2006-07. She averaged 10.7 points, 4.6 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.0 steals per game in her final season as a Tiger while wrapping up her career ranked ninth on the all-time scoring list with 1,396 points. Randall also earned CoSIDA Academic All-America honors for the second year in a row in 2021-22, picking up second team status after being named to the third team in 2020-21. She maintained a perfect 4.00 GPA throughout her five years at Fort Hays State, graduating with a degree in Health and Human Performance in December 2021 before starting a graduate program in sports administration this spring. Off the court, Randall has volunteered at numerous educational events for local elementary students. She served as a camp counselor at Fall Creek Christian Camp in Oklahoma, volunteered at a weekend retreat with her home church of First Baptist of Alva and has traveled to three international mission trips in the Dominican Republic, Canada and Haiti. 2021-22 Ken B. HUTCHINSON — Mace Krol will be the next head coach of Hutch High baseball.&nbsp;

Krol
 is a Nickerson native and played college baseball at Hutchinson 
Community College and at Nicholls State before finishing at Fort Hays 
State.&nbsp;

Krol is the son of&nbsp;longtime Nickerson baseball coach Rich Krol.

Krol
 is a PE teacher at Hutchinson High School and was the long-time 
assistant to Jim Preston, who stepped down after this season.
