JOHNSON CITY – Brady Frickey won the individual title and the
Ellis boys won the team title at Monday’s Stanton County 2A golf regional at the
Johnson-Prairie Pines Golf Course. Frickey had one double-bogey, four bogeys
and three birdies and shot a 3-over-par 73. He edged Elkhart’s Lance Addington
by four strokes.

The Railers, who won last week’s Mid-Continent League Tournament,
shot a 347 and edged second place Hoxie by four strokes to secure a spot in
next week’s 2A State Tournament. Oakley finished third with a 356.

The 2A State Tournament will be held at the Salina Municipal
Golf Course on Monday and Tuesday (May 24-25).

🏃‍♀️ Rossi bests 400m hurdles record at Loper Twilight #2

CHICAGO — Wade Davis bounced a wild pitch that allowed José Abreu to dash home with the game-ending run, and the Chicago White Sox rallied in the ninth inning to beat the Kansas City 4-3 on Sunday on a call that left the Royals fuming.

Kansas City led 3-2 when Tim Anderson doubled off Davis (0-2) leading off the ninth.

Adam Eaton sacrificed and, with the infield in, Yoán Moncada lined a run-scoring single to center. Abreu was hit just above the left elbow by an 82 mph knuckle-curve.

Yermín Mercedes singled sharply to right and Whit Merrifield, a second baseman making his second appearance in right field this season, made a throw on the fly to catcher Cam Gallagher. Moncada, sliding headfirst, was tagged out near the left shoulder.

Abreu, injured Friday in a collision with Hunter Dozier, dashed home when Davis bounced a knuckle-curve off Gallagher, and Davis' 21st pitch of the inning ricocheted about 15 feet up the first-base the line.

Gallagher retrieved the ball and made a leaping tag attempt. Abreu missed the plate with his left leg but got his left arm on the the plate just ahead of Gallagher's mitt.

Second-year big league umpire Edwin Moscoso signaled safe, and the call was upheld after a video review.

“We were talking about all his attributes,” Chicago manager Tony La Russa said of Abreu. “Now you have to add outstanding instinctive baserunning. It’s a great play.”

Royals manager Mike Matheny, though, strongly disagreed with the game-ending call.

“If we’re going to use video replay, there needs to be some accountability,” he said. "I just walked in here and had two different camera angles with this guy out — tagged before he ever even touched the plate. Very obvious. I don’t know what they’re doing, backing each other up. Whatever it is, it’s wrong.”

Matt Foster (2-1) struck out two in a perfect ninth. completing a six-hitter that gave Chicago a four-game split. The Royals had lost their previous four series, going 1-12 in that span.

Adam Eaton homered for AL Central-leading Chicago, which has not lost consecutive games since April 15-17.

Salvador Pérez, who left Saturday’s game in the eighth with left groin tightness, went 1 for 2 with a walk as the Royals' designated hitter.

Pérez hit a sacrifice fly in the first off Dylan Cease, who allowed an unearned run and three hits in 5 2/3 innings.

Chicago went ahead in the fifth when Eaton hit a two-run homer off Brady Singer, who gave up two runs and seven hits in 6 1/3 innings.

Kansas City took a 3-2 lead in the seventh when Aaron Bummer relieved Codi Heuer with two on, Merrifield hit a tying single and Carlos Santana followed with a sacrifice fly, a drive Eaton leaped to grab at the fence in right.

“Any way we can get a win is a win,” Eaton said. “Winning at all costs, whatever it takes.”

Abreu received treatment after the game and before the team departed for Minnesota. He did not speak with reporters.

“I know one thing, he was rubbing his knee,” La Russa said. “He’s sore. So he hit pretty hard. You can bet your fortune he’s playing tomorrow in Minnesota.”

⚾ Wild pitch lifts White Sox past Kansas City

CHICAGO (AP ) - Salvador Perez hit a three-run homer for the second straight day, and the Kansas City Royals handed Carlos Rodón his first loss of the season with a 5-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Saturday night.

Whit Merrifield had two hits and scored twice as the Royals got to Rodón (5-1) for four runs in the first three innings. The left-hander allowed two earned runs in 31 innings while winning his first five starts of the year, including a 3-0 victory at Kansas City in his previous start on May 7.

The big blow was Perez’s ninth homer, an opposite-field drive on a 96-mph fastball up and out of the zone in the third. The veteran catcher also hit a three-run shot during Kansas City’s 6-2 victory over Chicago in the opener of Friday’s doubleheader.

The early run support was more than enough for Mike Minor (3-2), who pitched seven innings of two-hit ball in his first win since April 23. The left-hander struck out seven and walked two.

He got some help from his defense when Jarrod Dyson robbed Andrew Vaughn with a terrific catch in left for the second out of the seventh.

CHICAGO (AP) — Rookie Andrew Vaughn, starting the nightcap at first base after AL MVP Jose Abreu was injured in a frightening collision in the first game, homered to send the Chicago White Sox over the Kansas City Royals 3-1 Friday for a doubleheader split.

The Royals ended an 11-game losing streak in the opener 6-2, stopping Chicago's six-game winning string.

The collision occurred in the second inning when Hunter Dozier, after popping up, jogged out of the batter’s box with his head down and grazed past catcher Yasmani Grandal.

Dozier took another couple of steps and then slammed hard into Abreu as he was tracking the ball, knocking both players to the ground about 20 feet from the plate.

Grandal caught the ball as trainers and medical staffs came onto the field. After few minutes, Abreu got up and left the field walking on his own, but looked dazed with his arms draped around two staffers.

Abreu suffered a facial bruise and cut, along with a bruised left knee. Tests for a concussion were negative and he was listed as day to day.

Dozier was put on the seven-day concussion injured list.

Michael Kopech tossed four sharp innings for the White Sox in the second game. He allowed one run, on a homer by Carlos Santana, and two hits while striking out five.

Codi Heuer (3-1) pitched a scoreless fifth to earn the win in the seven-inning game. Aaron Bummer followed with a perfect inning, then Liam Hendriks worked around in infield single in the seventh for his eighth save.

Vaughn made his first career start at first base in the majors and homered for the second time in three games. His two-run drive in the second chased Jakob Junis (1-3) and Chicago scored another run in the inning when Jake Brentz walked Yoán Moncada with the bases loaded.

Salvador Perez hit a three-run homer and Michael A. Taylor had a two-run drive in the first game.

Taylor homered on the first pitch from Lucas Giolito (2-4) after play resumed following the collision.

“You just need a little bit of that reinforcement with the good things that happened. We had guys taking walks, getting singles, working deep counts," he said.

After popping up in the second inning, Dozier jogged out of the batter’s box with his head down and grazed past catcher Yasmani Grandal. ⚾ Royals end 11-game skid with win over White Sox in doubleheader opener

Sara Breckbill will cross the FHSU commencement stage today, graduating with a Bachelor of Business Administration in marketing with an emphasis in digital marketing from Fort Hays State University’s Robbins College of Business and Entrepreneurship.&nbsp;

While some seniors are moving on and joining the workforce after what has been an unprecedented year, Breckbill will be returning in the fall to complete a minor in communication, certificate in leadership, and take the field for one more softball season.&nbsp;

“I was worried I would be putting my life on hold for one more year,” Breckbill said. “But then I realized I would get to do the thing I love for one more year and I could never get that back.”

Breckbill started in all 46 games this season, and led the team in batting average (.331), on-base percentage (.413), hits (46), RBIs (27), and doubles (11). She was also named an All-MIAA Honorable Mention at utility/non-pitcher. Breckbill and the team have come a long way, ending the year with a 24-22 record, seeing major progress from her freshman season finish at 13-37.

“It was tough that first year. Our coach had been here three years and we were focused on improving individually, as a team, and setting a foundation for the program,” Breckbill said. “Each year we’ve gotten better, though. Team chemistry improved and this year we were able to go into post-season play for the first time since I’ve been here and that’s the dream- to keep getting better and going further.”

Growing up in Parker, Colorado, Breckbill has played softball since she was seven. A talented athlete with an insatiable work ethic, dreaming of playing in college, Breckbill trained hard and received scholarship offers from colleges in Colorado and Texas. Her high school coach was an FHSU alumnus, and told her about the incredible academic programs and warm and welcoming college town on the plains.&nbsp;

“This is where I was supposed to be, even if its cheesy and cliché, it’s true,” Breckbill said.&nbsp;

Breckbill was in the first freshman class to live in the new Victor E Village and a part of the Athletes Today learning community. Being a part of the learning community helped her get acquainted with Hays and make lifelong friends.&nbsp;

“I’m nostalgic walking around there and remembering playing pool or board games and studying and staying up until 3 a.m. writing a paper,” Breckbill said.&nbsp;

The friends she made in those first years at Fort Hays State would be the same ones that she would navigate the COVID-19 pandemic alongside. Student-athletes were faced with many changes throughout the year, including daily COVID-19 testing, taking hybrid classes, and creating smaller pods or groups of people who would work out, study, and stay together to ensure health and safety of all the Tiger athletes. While it was tough, it made it all worthwhile to play in the Spring 2021 season.&nbsp;

“The people of Hays and FHSU are what make it special,” Breckbill said. “In this college town, everyone is involved in athletics and the community turns out to cheer for your games. It’s an awesome environment and even though it’s been different this year, we’d do it over again just to feel that energy and sense of community pride again.”

From lifelong friends to faculty, staff, and supporters who feel like family, there's nothing quite like the Fort Hays State atmosphere. FHSU faculty, staff, and supporters all play a massive part in the life of student-athletes. Breckbill can recount many times someone has saved her clippings from newspapers, left positive notes for the team, or sent an email just to check in and let her know they are proud of her effort in the classroom and on the field.&nbsp;

“There’s so many people that have made a difference and helped us get where we are today,” Breckbill said.&nbsp;

Thanks to the support of the FHSU and Hays Community, Breckbill and her teammates have grown up over the past four years, academically, personally, and as athletes.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“We have a goal every year and it’s important to our team that we excel academically- that’s why we’re here,” Breckbill said. “We learned to adapt and manage our time.”

Breckbill dreams of working for a college, doing social media management for athletes to combine her passion for sports and her newfound love for social media marketing. In one of Dr. Mary Martin's courses, she discovered her interest in marketing and digital marketing and understood the opportunity available in sports marketing. &nbsp;

“This semester we are writing a blog about social media- how to get started, how to get a job and internship,” said Breckbill. “I’ve really enjoyed it and it’s beneficial to do things that I will do in the workforce. I’m able to apply what I’m doing in the classroom right now.”

For now, her plans to land a career in sports marketing will wait as she continues to build her skills academically and, on the field, while preparing for one final season at FHSU.

 </figure>FHSU University RelationsSara Breckbill will cross the FHSU commencement stage today, graduating with a Bachelor of Business Administration in marketing with an emphasis in digital marketing from Fort Hays State University’s Robbins College of Business and Entrepreneurship.&nbsp;While some seniors are moving on and joining the workforce after what has been an unprecedented year, Breckbill will be returning in the fall to complete a minor in communication, certificate in leadership, and take the field for one more softball season.&nbsp;“I was worried I would be putting my life on hold for one more year,” Breckbill said. “But then I realized I would get to do the thing I love for one more year and I could never get that back.”Breckbill started in all 46 games this season, and led the team in batting average (.331), on-base percentage (.413), hits (46), RBIs (27), and doubles (11). She was also named an All-MIAA Honorable Mention at utility/non-pitcher. Breckbill and the team have come a long way, ending the year with a 24-22 record, seeing major progress from her freshman season finish at 13-37.“It was tough that first year. Our coach had been here three years and we were focused on improving individually, as a team, and setting a foundation for the program,” Breckbill said. “Each year we’ve gotten better, though. Team chemistry improved and this year we were able to go into post-season play for the first time since I’ve been here and that’s the dream- to keep getting better and going further.”Growing up in Parker, Colorado, Breckbill has played softball since she was seven. A talented athlete with an insatiable work ethic, dreaming of playing in college, Breckbill trained hard and received scholarship offers from colleges in Colorado and Texas. Her high school coach was an FHSU alumnus, and told her about the incredible academic programs and warm and welcoming college town on the plains.&nbsp;“This is where I was supposed to be, even if its cheesy and cliché, it’s true,” Breckbill said.&nbsp;Breckbill was in the first freshman class to live in the new Victor E Village and a part of the Athletes Today learning community. LIBERAL
– The Hays High boys track and field team had seven first place finishes and
wins the Western Athletic Conference meet by 41 points over Liberal. The
Indians girls finished in fourth place.

Jaren
Kanak again led the boys with two first place finishes, taking the 100 meters in
a time of 10.37, which is unofficially tied for the fifth fastest in Kansas
history. Kanak also won the long jump with a leap of 21’7 1/2”.

Dale cleared 6’4” and won the high jump. Nate Brooks improved his personal best
