⚽ Monarchs drop regional opener to Collegiate

INDIANAPOLIS - The Fort Hays State track and field teams had 16&nbsp;individuals selected to compete in 18 entries at the 2022 NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships later this month in Allendale, Mich. (May 26-28). Five women will compete in eight separate events, while 11&nbsp;male student-athletes will represent Fort Hays State in 10 events.&nbsp;This year's National Championships are being held in Allendale, Mich. for the second year in a row, with Grand Valley State once again assuming the hosting duties. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Luis Robert hit a two-run homer in the 10th inning after Johnny Cueto's impressive Chicago debut, and the White Sox defeated the Kansas City Royals 5-3 on Monday night in the opener of a five-game series.

Yasmani Grandal also had a two-run shot for the White Sox, who squandered a 3-0 lead in the eighth.

“It was an important win for us,” manager Tony La Russa said.

Robert connected off Scott Barlow (2-1) with two outs, scoring the automatic runner as well.

“I was just looking to make good contact and drive in that run,” Robert said. “The first pitch he threw me was a breaking ball. I was prepared for a fastball, but he threw me a breaking ball. I just hit it hard.”

The 36-year-old Cueto pitched six shutout innings in his first major league start this season after getting promoted from Triple-A Charlotte. He allowed just two hits and two walks, striking out seven. Only one runner reached second base against him.

“That’s the Johnny Cueto you’ve seen,” La Russa said. “He’s so deceptive. His fastball plays harder. He spots it. He’s down with a soft one and then he throws one by you. That shows you his talent. The number one thing we needed from him was to give us a chance to win. To go six shutout innings is more than you can (hope for). But you can’t be surprised. That’s what he has been his whole career."

Cueto, a two-time All-Star, made his first appearance on the Kauffman Stadium mound since throwing a two-hitter for Kansas City against the New York Mets to win Game 2 of the 2015 World Series. He was acquired from Cincinnati just before the trade deadline that year and played a key role in the Royals' championship.

“Throughout my career I have always put special emphasis on my first start of the season,” Cueto said. “I did it today. I was excited. I was facing a young team, a team that I used to play with. I knew this was a good team, too.”

Ryan Burr (1-1) worked a scoreless ninth and Liam Hendriks earned his 10th save in 13 tries.

Barlow got five outs without giving up a hit until Robert went deep.

Brad Keller also was solid for Kansas City. He allowed three runs and eight hits in seven innings — with many of the hits coming on soft contact.

The White Sox got their first run on a sacrifice fly by Andrew Vaughn in the third. Adam Engel led off with a fly ball that dropped between left fielder Andrew Benintendi and center fielder Michael A. Taylor. Engel then stole second and scored on Vaughn’s fly to right.

Grandal made it 3-0 when he lined an 0-2 pitch into the right-field bullpen. He drove in Robert, who extended his hitting streak to a career-high 14 games with an infield single.

The Royals tied it in the eighth against Kendall Graveman. Whit Merrifield lined a two-run double off the wall in left-center. He went to third on the throw home and scored on a single by Benintendi.

Chicago selected Cueto’s contract and optioned INF Danny Mendick to Charlotte. Cueto agreed to a minor league deal with the White Sox in April. His contract includes a $4 million salary in the majors and a $210,000 salary in the minors. He went 0-1 with a 5.17 ERA in four starts with Charlotte.

Cueto spent the past six seasons with San Francisco, going 7-7 with a 4.08 ERA in 22 games, 21 starts, for the Giants last year.

The teams play a scheduled split doubleheader Tuesday.

The White Sox will send RHP Dylan Cease (3-1, 3.55 ERA) to the mound in the opener and wait until after that game to determine who gets the ball for the nightcap. La Russa said it’s possible RHP Lucas Giolito (2-1, 2.70) could return from the COVID-19 injured list.

The Royals will have Jonathan Heasley (0-1, 2.70 ERA) pitch one game and Brady Singer (0-0, 6.35) the other. Kansas City manager Mike Matheny had not announced the order.

⚾ White Sox homer their way to series win over Royals

HAYS – The TMP-Marian pitchers combined to allow just one
run and the Monarchs scored in every inning but one as they knocked off the
Ellinwood Eagles 9-1 Monday in the opening game of regionals at TMP Field.

The Monarchs (12-5) took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of
the first inning when Jace Wentling hit his first triple of the season to drive
in the games first run, he then scored on a throwing error to put the Monarchs
up a pair.

TMP added two more runs in the bottom of the second when Nick
Herrman and Mark Rack hit back-to-back RBI singles giving TMP a 4-0 lead.

After scoring a run in the bottom of the third TMP plated
three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning when they second eight men to the plate.

Joey Mindrup doubled in a run and then Griffin Schumacher
singled in a pair of runs to put TMP up 8-0.

Each team added a run in the sixth but the Monarchs were
able to clinch the 9-1 victory.

Caden Morgan earned the victory with three shutout innings. He
allowed just two runs with four strikeouts.

Four Monarchs collected two hits led Joey Mindrup who was two-for-four
with two runs scored. 

TMP will take on Beloit in the regional semifinals Wednesday
afternoon in Great Bend.

Colby scored single runs in the
fifth, sixth and seventh innings but Madison Augustine got strikeout with a
runner on to end the game. Augustine allowed one earned run on eight this with
six strikeouts and three walks and picked up the complete game win.

Garcia had three of the Monarchs
seven hits.

The Monarchs will host
Beloit in the second semifinal tomorrow around 5 o’clock. The Trojans blanked
Larned 11-0. Hoisington/Central Plains and Russell/Victoria were the winners in
the top half of the bracket. The Cardinals beat Plainville/Stockton 16-0.

🥎 Monarchs beat Colby to advance in 3A regional

WICHITA – The Hays High boys golf team qualified two for next
week’s 5A State Tournament. Blake Buckles shot a 10-over par 82 and placed
sixth at the Maize Regional at Reflection Ridge Golf Course. Braxton Banker finished
13th after a 15-over 87.

Emporia’s Brookston Sauder won the individual title by one
shot over Grier Jones of Maize with a 3-over par, 75.

Emporia won the team title with a 324, 17 shots better than Valley
Center. Hays placed fifth with a 357.

The 5A State Tournament is next Monday and Tuesday at the Quail
Ridge Golf Course in Winfield.

WICHITA – The Hays High boys golf team qualified two for next
week’s 5A State Tournament. Blake Buckles shot a 10-over par 82 and placed
sixth at the Maize Regional at Reflection Ridge Golf Course. Braxton Banker finished
13th after a 15-over 87.Emporia’s Brookston Sauder won the individual title by one
shot over Grier Jones of Maize with a 3-over par, 75.Emporia won the team title with a 324, 17 shots better than Valley
Center. Hays placed fifth with a 357.The 5A State Tournament is next Monday and Tuesday at the Quail
Ridge Golf Course in Winfield.

week’s 3A State Tournament. Pake Dewey shot a 9-over par 79 and placed third at
the Larned Regional at the Larned Country Club. Freshman Heuer Brungardt placed
eighth with a 20-over par 90.

Larned’s Easton Fitzpatrick won the individual title by six
shots after firing a 2-over par 72.

The Indians won the team title by two shots over Cimarron. TMP-Marian
place third, five shots out of second. 

The 3A State Golf Tournament is next Monday and Tuesday at the
Salina Municipal Golf Course.

🥎 Railers cruise in regional opener

SALINA – The Ellis baseball team scored four runs in the
bottom of the first and that was all they needed as they knocked off Ell-Saline
17-3 in the 3A Regional opener at James Matson Field in Salina.

Easton Burton, Jarret Mader, Tyson Jimenez and George Crawford
all had three of the Railers 16 hits. Crawford and Matt Ernst both drove in four
runs.

Burton allowed two earned runs on six hits with eight strikeouts
and no walks over the first three innings and picked up the win in the game
which ended after five innings due to run-rule. Ian McGuire pitched two innings
of scoreless relief with three strikeouts and one walk.

The Railers (12-6) will take on Canton-Galva in the second regional semifinal Thursday around . The Eagles edged Sacred Heart 5-4.

DENVER (AP) — Salvador Perez hit a go-ahead, two-run single in the ninth inning and the Kansas City Royals recovered from blowing a six-run lead to beat the Colorado Rockies 8-7. 

Bobby Witt Jr., Whit Merrifield and Emmanuel Rivera homered for the Royals, who took two of three from Colorado. 

The Rockies overcame a 6-0 deficit by scoring seven times in the seventh. Andrew Benintendi drew a leadoff walk from Rockies closer Daniel Bard in the ninth and Ryan O’Hearn singled. 

A wild pitch and a one-out walk to Michael A. Taylor loaded the bases for Perez, who laced a single to left field.

⚾Blackmon, Hilliard, McMahon power Rockies past Royals 10-4

The TMP-Marian girls track and field team had two individual
champions and had 16 individuals and three relay teams finish in the top six on
their way to the league championship Friday at Smith Center.

TMP’s Kassidi Yost won the high jump clearing a height of 5’2”
and Shalee Gottschalk won the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 16.85.

Emma Basgall was second in the 100 meter dash and the long
jump and triple jump. The 4x400 meter relay team also finished second.

Kade Harris won both the 100 (11.45 seconds) and 200 meter dash
(23.41) and the 4x100 meter relay team placed first. Jace Wentling finished
second in the long jump.

The TMP boys had seven individuals and one relay team place
in the top six.

RLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Taylor Hearn allowed only one hit in five scoreless innings, Brad Miller homered and the Texas Rangers defeated the Kansas City Royals 3-1 on Thursday night.

The Royals’ first hit literally was off Hearn. Michael A. Taylor sent a liner up the middle off the pitcher’s leg that continued to the left of second base and into left field with two out in the second inning.

Hearn (2-2) walked three and struck out five.

Joe Barlow pitched a scoreless ninth, retiring Whit Merrifield on a grounder with two runners on base, for his sixth save in six opportunities.

Jonathan Heasley (0-1) allowed four hits and four runs in 3 1/3 innings in his first major league appearance this season.

Hearn had not pitched in 11 days, while he was briefly out of the rotation and available to come out of the bullpen.

“I was trying to come in consistent,” Hearn said. “You can try to prepare for games but it's different when you get in there your first time seeing a lot of batters. It felt a little weird.”

Hearn threw 64 pitches and said he could have gone longer.

Manager Chris Woodward thought Hearn had thrown enough.

“We weren't sure how he was going to respond after being out for so long," Woodward said. "He was really honest, but you could tell he was a little bit fatigued.”

Miller led off the bottom of the first inning with an infield hit against a shift and later scored on a two-out, popup single by Kole Calhoun over third baseman Emmanuel Rivera's head in short left field.

Miller hit a home run, his fifth, off the right field foul pole in the seventh. The homer was reviewed, and the home run call was confirmed.

Miller popped out with the bases loaded in the fourth inning of a 1-0 game.

“He was kicking himself,” Woodward said. "He was saying, ‘I’ve got to get a run in there.'

“He thrives in big spots because he has no fear. He said he knew it was a home run because he knocked down the pole.”

Texas reliever Brock Burke pitched two hitless innings before Kansas City used three consecutive singles to break up the shutout in eighth against John King. Matt Bush relieved King to get the third out, fanning Bobby Witt Jr. with runners at first and second.

Adolis Garcia restored Texas' two-run lead in the bottom half when he tripled and scored on Josh Staumont's wild pitch.

Heasley was recalled from Triple-A Omaha to take the place of LHP Kris Bubic, who was optioned to Omaha. The 25-year-old Heasley was 1-1 in three starts for the Royals last season.

“It's an opportunity,” manager Mike Matheny said. “He's going to be someone that we're going to watch closely now that he'll be here to help us. He's got three plus pitches — changeup and breaking ball are both very good, and his fastball. This is going to be a good test for him back in his home territory. It's an extra add to already being a great test, and he's ready for it.”

Heasley is from Plano, Texas, 29 miles from Globe Life Field. Hearn is from Royse City, an additional 20 miles from the Rangers' home field.

Royals: C Cam Gallagher was eligible to come off the injured list on Thursday, but he remained inactive. C Sebastian Rivero started in his first major league game this season after being recalled from Double-A Northwest Arkansas.

DODGE CITY – The Hays high boys track team
won five individual events and a relay and edged Garden City by two points to
win the Western Athletic Conference meet Thursday at Memorial Stadium.

The Indians finished with 99 team points, Garden
City was second with 97 and Dodge City third with 89.

Kyreese Groen led the HHS boys with two first
place finishes, winning the long jump and triple jump. Jordan Dale finished
first in the high jump as did Harley Zimmerman in the pole vault and Nate
Brooks in the javelin. The 4x100 meter relay team of Trent Summers, Keamonie
Archie, Malik Bah and Chason VanDerWege also won a gold medal.

The Indian girls won one event and finished a
distant second behind Great Bend. The Panthers finished with 139.67 points,
Hays had 73 and Dodge City 61.33.
