HAYS, Kan. – Schedule changes have been announced for four of Fort Hays State's sports this week due to inclement weather forecasted in the state of Kansas. Women's and Men's Basketball at Emporia State has been pushed to Thursday night. The softball doubleheader with Bethany College for Wednesday in Hays has been postponed, while Women's Wrestling will not be making the trip to Hastings College on Wednesday for the double dual scheduled with Hastings and Chadron State.

Women's and Men's Basketball Pushed to Thursday Night Fort Hays State Women's and Men's Basketball games at Emporia State have been pushed back a day to Thursday, February 13. Start times of the contests remain the same with the women at 5:30 p.m. and then the men at 7:30 p.m. It will be the second meeting with the Hornets this season after both Tiger teams were victorious in Hays. The tip to Emporia will be part of a road swing in Kansas this week for the Tigers, which also includes games at Newman University on Saturday afternoon.

Softball vs. Bethany Postponed Fort Hays State Softball has postponed its doubleheader scheduled against Bethany College on Wednesday (Feb. 12), due to inclement weather forecasted for the Hays area. Coaches of both teams will search for a potential make-up date in the future.

Next up on the schedule for the Tigers is the Raising Cane's Softball Festival in the Edmond/Oklahoma City area, February 14-16. Keep an eye on fhsuathletics.com for any further changes to the schedule. The first home date on the FHSU schedule is now February 25, a doubleheader with Southwestern Oklahoma State.

Women's Wrestling Trip to Hastings Canceled Due to the winter storm predicted to set into the Hays and surrounding Kansas area late Tuesday night and throughout Wednesday, FHSU Women's Wrestling has canceled its trip to Hastings, Nebraska on February 12. There will be no make-up date for the duals with both Hastings and Chadron State.

Schedule changes for four FHSU sports due to weather forecast

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Fort Hays State women's basketball graduate student Olivia Hollenbeck&nbsp;has been named the latest MIAA Athlete of the Week, announced Monday by the league office. This is the second time Hollenbeck has earned the award after also doing so during the first week of the season.

Hollenbeck averaged 24.5 points in a pair of home wins last week, helping Fort Hays State reach the 20-win plateau for a 14th-consecutive season. The Lincoln, Neb. native hit an eye-popping 76.0 percent from the floor (19-of-25) while adding 5.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 2.5 blocks and 2.0 steals per game.

A four-time All-MIAA selection, Hollenbeck opened the week with 22 points on 10-of-13 shooting against Northeastern State before adding 27 points on 9-of-12 shooting alongside four blocks and three steals against Arkansas-Fort Smith.

FHSU's streak of 20-win seasons is the longest in Division II and is the sixth-longest across all NCAA divisions. The next best active stretch in the MIAA is three.

Hollenbeck is one of three women's basketball players in the MIAA to earn the award multiple times this season.

MANHATTAN, Kan. - Senior&nbsp;David N’Guessan&nbsp;was named the Big 12 Player of the Week for the first time in his career on Monday afternoon after averaging 21 points in helping Kansas State to wins over Arizona State and No. 16/17 Kansas last week.

N’Guessan averaged 21.0 points on 70.8 percent (17-of-24) shooting, including 50 percent (1-of-2) from 3-point range, and 77.8 percent (7-of-9) from the free throw line to go with 7.5 rebounds in 34.4 minutes per game in victories over the Sun Devils and Jayhawks. He followed his season-high 22-point performance vs. ASU with a team-high 20 points vs. Kansas to post consecutive 20-point games for the first time in his career. He now has 4 career 20-point games.

N’Guessan opened the week by posting his first 20-point game in Big 12 play in a 71-70 win at Arizona State on Feb. 4 with a season-high 22 points to go with 8 rebounds in 36 minutes. He went 8-of-11 from the field, including 1-of-1 from 3-point range, and 5-of-6 from the free throw line. He had the game’s biggest play, as he fouled Sun Devil freshman&nbsp;Jayden Quaintance&nbsp;as he was attempting the game-winning dunk with 4.1 seconds, forcing him to win the game at the free throw line. 🏀 K-State's N’Guessan named Big 12 Player of the Week

MANHATTAN, Kan. - Matt Wells, who served on the K-State football staff as the co-offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach/associate head coach in 2024 has been promoted to offensive coordinator, head coach Chris Klieman&nbsp;announced Monday.

"We are fortunate to have someone experienced on staff in Matt, who I have known for 12-plus years and will seamlessly transition into the offensive coordinator role," Klieman said. "He worked closely with Conor last season and had a big part in our offensive production. His resume speaks for itself, and his relationship with and development of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/football/roster/avery-johnson/11768">Avery Johnson</a>&nbsp;and our other quarterbacks will help our offense continue to grow.

"Wells replaces Conor Riley&nbsp;as the primary play caller, who was named the Dallas Cowboys' offensive line coach late last week."It is such an honor to coach here at K-State, and I am thankful to Coach Klieman for this opportunity," Wells said. "I have grown to love this school and our players throughout this past year. I am excited for this upcoming season and looking forward to building upon this offense with our players and staff.

Under the direction of Wells, Johnson guided an offense that finished in the top 15 nationally in four offensive categories, including rushing yards per carry (second; 6.08) and rushing yards per game (11th; 215.5). K-State also ranked in the top 10 in school history in 15 game or season categories. Among those were school record for offensive yards per play (6.57) and rushing yards per carry (6.08), while the Wildcats tied for third in passing touchdowns (25), ranked fourth in offensive yards per game (426.8), fifth in total offense yards (5,549), sixth in rushing yards (2,801), seventh in completions (222) and 10th in both passing yards (2,749) and pass attempts (383).

Wells, who boasts nine years of head coaching experience, came to Manhattan after spending the previous two seasons at Oklahoma as an advisor to the head coach/offensive analyst. Prior to that, he served as the head coach at his alma mater, Utah State, from 2013 through 2018 and at Texas Tech from 2019 to 2021. In addition to coaching quarterbacks during his 27-year coaching career, he has also spent time tutoring wide receivers and tight ends. In total, Wells has been a part of 14 bowl teams and two conference championships.

Another one of Wells' success stories tutoring quarterbacks was Jordan Love at Utah State, who accounted for 9,003 yards of total offense in his career – including a 2018 campaign in which he threw for 3,567 yards and 32 touchdowns – before declaring for the NFL Draft following his junior season of 2019. In addition to snapping five single-season school records in 2018, Love also ranked second in school history with 8,600 career passing yards and tied for second with 60 touchdown passes. He went on to be selected 26th overall by the Green Bay Packers in the 2020 NFL Draft, becoming the first Aggie to hear his name called in the first round since 1970.

Utah State boasted one of the most dynamic offenses in the country in 2018, ranking second by averaging 47.5 points per game. The Aggies, who also ranked among the national leaders for fewest sacks allowed (fourth), total offense (11th), passing efficiency (14th) and passing offense (17th), lit up scoreboards to the tune of 618 points, snapping the Mountain West and Utah State single-season records in the process.

A native of Sallisaw, Oklahoma, Wells began his career coaching the quarterbacks, fullbacks and wide receivers at Navy from 1997 through 2001 in addition to serving as the head coach for the Midshipmen junior varsity team. He then spent five seasons back in his home state as he was the tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator at Tulsa from 2002 to 2006.Wells spent the 2007, 2008 and 2010 seasons at New Mexico as the wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator. During the 2009 season, he was the passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Louisville.

Wells' tenure at Utah State began as the quarterbacks coach and recruiting coordinator in 2011 before being promoted to offensive coordinator a year later. As offensive coordinator, Wells helped Utah State claim the 2012 WAC title, its first outright conference championship since 1936 and just its third in school history. That season, Wells directed an Aggie offense that set single-season school records for total points (454), total offense (6,108), completions (285) and total yards per game (469.8), while ranking second in points per game (34.9) and total passing yards (3,445).

Wells was instrumental in the development of quarterback Chuckie Keeton, who earned First Team All-WAC honors in 2012 after setting single-season school records for touchdown passes (27), passing yards (3,373), completion percentage (67.6%), completions (275) and total offense (3,992). Keeton also earned WAC Offensive Player of the Week honors four times that year, which marked a new single-season school record.

Wells earned his bachelor's degree in business marketing from Utah State in 1996, graduating cum laude. He and his wife, Jen, have two daughters, Jadyn and Ella, and one son, Wyatt.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Jalen Hurts threw for two touchdowns and ran for a score on a tush push, and Vic Fangio's defense was so dominant that the Eagles didn't need much from Saquon Barkley.

The game-changing running back finished with 57 yards,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/super-bowl-eagles-barkley-5e28abc26e50169e124fa99c2ef4058e">breaking Terrell Davis’ record</a>&nbsp;for yards rushing in a season, playoffs included. Hurts threw for 221 yards.

With Donald Trump&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-nfl-super-bowl-first-president-766c628f4ea3faf38d100e4f33f2ac8c">becoming the first president in office to attend a Super Bowl</a>, the Eagles outplayed Kansas City in every facet, delighting a raucous pro-Philly crowd that celebrated each score with a familiar rendition of “Fly! Eagles! Fly!”

Even&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/super-bowl-taylor-swift-travis-kelce-35c7b3b896c226566e4afa0baa7b69c5">Taylor Swift’s presence</a>&nbsp;couldn’t help the Chiefs. They lost for the first time in 10 games this season with the pop superstar in a suite watching boyfriend Travis Kelce, who didn’t catch a pass until late in the third quarter.

Not in Kansas City’s worst nightmares could its fans have imagined such a lackluster performance. The Chiefs had won three of the previous five Super Bowls, losing 31-9 to Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers four years ago.

Mahomes was 8-0 against Fangio’s defenses before the longtime coordinator and former Broncos head coach outcoached Andy Reid, capping his first season with his hometown team. Reid fell to 3-3 in Super Bowls, including a loss with the Eagles.

The Eagles sacked Mahomes six times, the most of his career, including 2 1/2 by Sweat. And they did it without Fangio calling a single blitz.

Barkley, the 2024 AP NFL Offensive Player of the Year, only had 31 yards rushing in the first half when Philly built a 24-0 lead.

The Chiefs were aiming to become the third team in NFL history to win three straight championships and the first to three-peat in the Super Bowl era.

Sirianni was showered with Gatorade with nearly three minutes left in the game while backup QB Kenny Pickett took snaps in mop-up duty.

Barkley helped push Hurts into the end zone from the 1 to give Philadelphia a 7-0 lead in the first quarter.

Up 10-0 after Jake Elliott’s 48-yard field goal, Sweat and Jalyx Hunt sacked Mahomes on consecutive plays. Mahomes then rolled out and made an errant throw that was picked by DeJean, who returned it 38 yards for a 17-0 lead.

It was Mahomes’ first pick-6 in 21 career playoff games and ended a streak of 297 straight passes without an interception.

All-Pro linebacker Zack Baun picked Mahomes again late in the second quarter, and Hurts connected with A.J. Brown on a 12-yard TD pass for a 24-0 lead.

Mahomes fired a 24-yard TD pass to Xavier Worthy to avoid the shutout, but the 2-point conversion failed. He threw two late, mostly meaningless TD passes, one to DeAndre Hopkins and another to Worthy.

After two weeks of discussions about questionable calls that led to public perception that officials favor the Chiefs — a theory NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell called “ridiculous” — the first penalty of the game only fueled critics.

A 32-yard pass from Hurts to Brown to the Chiefs 18 on fourth-and-2 was negated by a penalty for offensive pass interference. Brady, now a Fox analyst, and officiating analyst Mike Pereira both disagreed with the call, although Brown shoved Trent McDuffie’s facemask.

On the next possession, the Eagles benefited from an unnecessary roughness penalty on McDuffie against Dallas Goedert following an incomplete pass on third-and-5.

Hurts then connected with Jahan Dotson on a 27-yard pass to the 1 and scored on the next play.

Hurts’ streak of 217 passes without a pick ended in the first half when he was intercepted deep in Kansas City territory, but the Chiefs didn’t capitalize.

The Green Bay Packers are the only NFL team to win three championships in a row, doing it from 1929-31 and 1965-67.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) —&nbsp;Former Iowa player and Nickerson High School standout Ava Jones announced on social media Saturday that she has cancer.

Jones said on&nbsp;<a href="https://www.instagram.com/avajones_35/p/DF0uLFnxNcZ/" target="_blank">Instagram</a>&nbsp;that she has Hodgkin lymphoma.

Just days after she committed to play for the Hawkeyes in 2022, Jones and her family were struck by a car in Kentucky. Her father, Trey Jones, died and she suffered a brain injury. Her mom was also injured.

“I was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma after the results from the biopsy came back,” she wrote. “This is the news no one ever wants to get, but especially after spending the last 2 and a half years working my butt off and recovering from getting hit by a car. My body is very strong and I am confident in the doctors here at Iowa.”

Her former teammate Caitlin Clark commented on Jones’ post writing, “Praying for you kid."

Jones' scholarship was honored by Iowa and she was on the basketball team as a freshman before she&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/iowa-ava-jones-retires-2b80c94b58f419264a4db5fb96a741a1" target="_blank">medically retired</a>&nbsp;eight months ago. She had several surgeries to address the brain injury as well as the multiple torn ligaments in her knees. She redshirted last season with hopes of playing at some point during her career at Iowa.

“It is with great sadness to announce that I am medically retiring from college basketball. My coaches, doctors, teammates and trainers have been amazing since the accident,” Jones said when she retired. “While I will no longer be a member of the women’s basketball program, I will still be on scholarship, receive a world-class education and forever be a Hawkeye. I’d like to thank my family for the never-ending support and I am excited for the next chapter of my life.”

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State held off a second-half push from Arkansas-Fort Smith Saturday, winning 59-53 at Gross Memorial Coliseum. The Tigers built a 16-point halftime lead but saw the Lions pull within one with seven minutes to play.&nbsp;

Fort Hays State (15-7, 8-5 MIAA) opened the game on a 7-0 run before seeing the Lions (9-13, 3-10 MIAA) counter with a 10-2 run to take a one-point lead about seven minutes into the game, their only lead of the game. The Tigers used an 20-5 run to build a 34-18 halftime lead.

The Lions started to chip away at the Tiger lead in the second half, getting the margin inside of 10 with a little over 15 minutes to play. It stayed in single figures the rest of the way. With the Tigers up by nine with 10:27 to play, the Lions used an 8-0 run over about 3:30 to trim the lead down to just one at 43-42.&nbsp;

Lucas Hammeke&nbsp;hit a big bucket to snap the run and then Kyle Grill,&nbsp;who had not scored in the game, came alive offensively with a big pair of buckets. The Lions trimmed the lead to four points three times in the final four minutes, but FHSU held the off for their eighth-straight home win.

FHSU held UAFS to 35.4 percent shooting for the game. FHSU hit 48.9 percent of its field goals. The Tigers had a 12-point advantage in points off turnovers, while having a turnover margin of +5 for the game.

Kaleb Hammeke&nbsp;led the Tigers with 17 points, going 7-of-17 from the field. He was the only Tiger to score in double figures. Grill led in rebounds with a new career-high 11, while adding seven big points late. Shaun Riley&nbsp;had eight points and eight rebounds, while Dan Makuna&nbsp;provided eight points off the bench.

Roland McCoy led the Lions with 12 points, all on four 3-point field goals. Isaiah Lewis had a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds.

The Tigers head back on the road next week, but stay in the state of Kansas. They play at Emporia State on Wednesday evening and then Newman University on Saturday afternoon.&nbsp;&nbsp;

HOLLIDAY, Texas – Fort Hays State Softball split another pair of games on Saturday at the Mustang Round Up in Texas. The Tigers dropped their first contest of the day, 3-2 to Southwestern Oklahoma State, before ending the weekend with a runaway 9-0 run-rule victory over Southwest Baptist. FHSU is now 2-2 overall on the season.

Southwestern Oklahoma State 3, Fort Hays State 2 Southwestern Oklahoma State jumped out to a 3-0 lead through four and a half innings and it turned out to be too much for FHSU to overcome. The Tigers picked up a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth to cut the lead down to 3-2, but stranded the potential tying runner at second base in the seventh.

FHSU holds the longest active streak of 20-win seasons in Division II and the sixth longest streak across all NCAA women's basketball. The next-longest active streak in the MIAA is just three seasons (MSSU, MWSU, PSU).

The Tigers hit a blistering 55.0 percent from the floor, their best shooting game against a Division II opponent this season. It is FHSU's 11th win by 20 or more points this year.

Fort Hays State was off and running from the jump, with the home team scoring the first 11 points to take complete control. After missing their first two from the floor the Tigers hit 5-of-6 in a span of two minutes, 11 seconds while forcing UAFS into three missed shots and three turnovers.

Olivia Hollenbeck&nbsp;took the reins in the first quarter, scoring 12-straight points for the Tigers to outscore the Lions 12-6 in the frame. The home team led by 16 at the end of the first period after Talexa Weeter&nbsp;ended the frame with a basket, putting FHSU up 22-6.The Tigers later led by as many as 22 late in the first half before the Lions put together an 11-2 run, closing within 13. Brooke Loewe&nbsp;thwarted the run with a basket just before the buzzer, giving FHSU a 47-32 lead at the break.

Fort Hays State is coming off a key 61-48 win over Northeastern State on Thursday night, which pushed the Tigers up to fourth in the MIAA standings and still just a game back of second place. It was the only meeting of the regular season between the teams. The win gave Mark Johnson&nbsp;his 300th&nbsp;win at Gross Memorial Coliseum and 465th&nbsp;win overall.

Arkansas-Fort Smith picked up a win at Nebraska-Kearney on Thursday evening by a score of 66-59. The Lions have won two of their last three games. They are 2-6 in true road games this season, but the win at UNK on Thursday was their first road win in MIAA play.

Fort Hays State lowered its NCAA Division II-leading scoring defense to 58.9 points allowed per game by holding Northeastern State to 48 on Thursday. NSU scored 18 points fewer than its previous season low. Ball security is also a strong suit of the Tigers as they rank second nationally in turnovers per game, averaging just 9.1. The Tigers rank seventh in NCAA Division II in field goal percentage defense, allowing a 39.4 percent success rate to the opposition.

Kaleb Hammeke leads the Tigers at 14.6 points and 4.2 assists per game.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/shaun-riley/8227">Shaun Riley</a>&nbsp;leads in rebounds at 6.7 per game, while adding 10.1 points per game. Kyle Grill&nbsp;also averages double figures in scoring at 12.3 per game.

Terrell Williams Jr. is the only UAFS player averaging double figures in scoring at 11.8 per game. Isaiah Lewis, Elijah Wilson, and Roland McCoy all average at least nine points per game.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The eighth-ranked Fort Hays State women's basketball team faces off with conference-newcomer Arkansas-Fort Smith for the first time in program history Saturday beginning at 2 p.m. inside Gross Memorial Coliseum.

While this is the first-ever meeting between the Tigers and the Lions, this is not the first time FHSU has played another "Fort." Fort Hays State is 15-2 all-time against former RMAC rival Fort Lewis.

Winners of six in a row, Fort Hays State enters the contest 19-2 overall and 10-2 in MIAA action, while the Lions are 13-8 this season and 7-5 in conference contests. The Tigers need one win to reach the 20-win plateau for a 14th-straight season. FHSU has the longest active streak in Division II (Drury second with 11) and the sixth-longest streak in all NCAA women's basketball. The next-best stretch in the MIAA is just three seasons (MWSU, MSSU, PSU).

The Tigers rank in the top 10 in Division II in numerous statistical categories, including assist/turnover ratio (1.37, second), assists per game (18.9, third), field goal percentage (46.0, eighth), scoring margin (+18.6, ninth) and winning percentage (.905, tenth).Seventeen of FHSU's 19 wins have been double-figure victories, including 10 victories by 20 or more points, while both of the Tigers' losses have been by just one point.

Fort Hays State leads Division II in attendance this season, averaging 1,824 fans per home contest. That total would tie Florida for 94th in Division I and is more than 272 DI programs.

Brooke Loewe&nbsp;has distributed 145 assists this season, already tied for third-most in a single season in program history. At her current pace of 7.3 assists per game, the junior would break the school record of 166 assists with four games remaining in the regular season (Kristi Leeper-Meis, 1990-91).

After hitting 10-of-13 from the floor in Thursday's win over Northeastern State, forward Olivia Hollenbeck&nbsp;improved her field goal percentage to 63.1 percent. That shooting rate ranks second in the MIAA and is fifth-best in the country. The graduate student also leads the team in both blocks and steals, ranking second in the MIAA with 2.1 steals per night and ranking third in blocks with 1.7 rejections per contest.

Arkansas-Fort Smith is 13-8 overall and 7-5 in MIAA action after dropping its third-straight game Thursday at Nebraska-Kearney. The Lions are 4-5 in true road games this season and 6-6 overall away from home. UAFS ranks third in the league in scoring offense, averaging 75.1 points per contest, while ranking second-to-last in scoring defense, allowing 72.7 points per contest. The Lions hit 7.5 3-pointers per game, third-most in the conference. Anna Trusty leads the Lions with 13.7 points per night, ranking 13th in the MIAA. She also paces the team in rebounds, ranking 15th in the league with 6.3 boards per game.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Patrick Mahomes,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/super-bowl-2025-kelce-e81cb46000e0dfe731cf4d1bd0775635">Travis Kelce</a>&nbsp;and the Kansas City Chiefs are pursuing history and a few of Taylor Swift’s records.

Saquon Barkley, Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia Eagles stand in their way.

The Chiefs (17-2) will try to become the first team to win three straight Super Bowls when they face the Eagles (17-3) on Sunday in the Superdome.

It’s a rematch from two years ago when Hurts nearly led the Eagles to a championship only to watch Mahomes snatch it away by rallying Kansas City to a 38-35 win on&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/super-bowl-butker-6b308c23c218a10201a3c3bafa2aaca1">Harrison Butker’s</a>&nbsp;27-yard field goal with 8 seconds left.

Mahomes lifted the Chiefs to an overtime win against San Francisco in another Super Bowl rematch last year. Now, they’re poised for a three-peat, a word coach&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/super-bowl-2025-andy-reid-bed873e97e64d43952dcf4382c963578">Andy Reid</a>&nbsp;doesn’t use much.

"I think the only time I’ve heard him say it is to the media whenever y’all ask him about it," Mahomes said. "He’s very locked in on just, ‘How can we be great with our cadence today at practice?’ so that’s just the stuff that Coach Reid focuses on."

Reid won more games than any coach in franchise history during his 14 seasons in Philadelphia but couldn’t win the big one, going 1-4 in NFC championship games and losing a Super Bowl to the Patriots. He went right to Kansas City after the Eagles fired him following the 2012 season and has built a dynasty thanks to Mahomes, Kelce, Chris Jones and others.

“You don’t have time to think about all that,” Reid said of the three-peat. “You’re focused in on the job at hand here and that’s playing against a great Eagles team.”

Jones, the three-time All-Pro defensive tackle, echoed his coach’s viewpoint.

“We don’t talk about no three-peat,” Jones said. “I think that’s what we’re here for. We understand that. We understand there’s one more game until the offseason and we can do whatever we want to do. Our main focus is making sure we’re prepared for the Eagles.”

No matter what the Chiefs say, everyone else is talking about it. No team has done it in the Super Bowl era, though the Green Bay Packers won an NFL championship in 1965 and followed by winning the first two Super Bowls. Kelce even started all the three-peat talk on stage last year when he said the team’s goal was to win three.

“This is gonna be our biggest test yet,” Kelce said. “They got a lot of great players but the biggest thing is they play great together. You could see their communication. You could see the accountability they have, especially in the secondary. It’s not gonna make my job any easier.”

These Eagles are different from the group that fell just short against Kansas City in Arizona two years ago.

They have the NFL’s most dynamic player in the backfield. Barkley rushed for 2,447 yards with seven touchdowns of 60-plus yards in the regular season and playoffs.

“The goal has always been to win it, not just to get here,” Barkley said.

Losing to the Chiefs two years ago only motivated Hurts even more. He’s determined to hoist a Lombardi trophy and even had a photo of him walking off the field with Kansas City’s red and yellow confetti falling around him as the background on his phone.

“It’s had a great driving force,” Hurts said of that loss. “It lit a flame, lit a fire in me, and to have this opportunity again is exactly what you work for.”

Hurts, Barkley, A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith and a dominant offensive line present a major challenge for Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo.

The Eagles also have the league’s No. 1-ranked defense, featuring eight new starters from 2022 and defensive coordinator Vic Fangio.

All-Pro linebacker Zack Baun and rookie cornerbacks Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean plus the emergence of defensive tackle Jalen Carter and edge rusher Nolan Smith has transformed a defensive unit that fell apart last season.

“We’re fortunate to have Steve Spagnuolo, but I tell you that Vic is one of those guys,” Reid said. “He’s just one of those really creative defensive minds that survived a long time in this league. He’s been time-tested, and, he has the trust of his players.”

If the Chiefs win, Reid and Mahomes will be one step closer to Bill Belichick and Tom Brady. They’re halfway to the six Belichick and Brady won together in New England and Mahomes is still four away from Brady’s seven rings.

“I’m trying to be the greatest Patrick Mahomes that I can be. That’s obviously a goal of anyone’s — to be the greatest at their profession — but in order to do that, you have to be the greatest that you can be every single day,” Mahomes said.

“Whenever I’m done with football, if I leave everything out there — the way that I feel like I have so far — as far as effort and mentality, I’ll be happy with the results.”

A win for Kansas City also would give Kelce his fourth ring, the same number of Grammy Awards his pop star girlfriend has won for best album. Overall, Kelce has 18 playoff wins and Swift has 14 Grammys.

“She’s up there being the superstar that she is and never taking no for an answer and always working her tail off. I better match that energy for sure,” Kelce said.
