HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State defeated Northwestern Oklahoma State by run rule twice on Tuesday at Fleharty Family Field. The Tigers won both games in five innings, taking game one 8-0 and game two 10-2. The Tigers improved to 17-18 overall for the season, while the Rangers went to 10-26 overall. FHSU won three of four games from NWOSU for the season.
Game 1: Fort Hays State 8, Northwestern Oklahoma State 0
The Tigers built an early lead of 3-0 with a run in the first and two in the second. Their big inning was the fourth, when they had five cross the plate to take the 8-0 lead. Korryn Johnson needed only 45 pitches in a complete-game win for the Tigers, allowing just four hits with one strikeout.
The Tigers had only five hits and two RBIs in the game. Hannah Green drove in a run on a ground out, while Abbey Duarte had an RBI double. Three of FHSU's runs were scored on errors. They also scored runs on a wild pitch, passed ball, and a double steal. Audrey Gillespie led the way with two hits, while Ava Burgess scored two runs. Peyton Shepard stole a pair of bases, while Burgess had one and Kory Schoenfeld swiped one.
Madelyn Cason was the losing pitcher for NWOSU, going 3.0 innings. She allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits and three walks. Grace Hulsey also tossed an inning and allowed five runs (three earned).
Game 2: Fort Hays State 10, Northwestern Oklahoma State 2
Fort Hays State never trailed in the second contest of the day. FHSU took an initial 2-0 lead in the first before NWOSU evened the score with two in the second. The Tigers kept scoring runs though, putting two on the board in the second and three in the third for a 7-2 lead. They scored three times in the bottom of the fifth to reach the run rule, 10-2.
The Tigers pounded out 11 hits as Hannah Green, Peyton Shepard, Audrey Gillespie, and Lilly Mohr all notched two. Shepard and Gillespie each drove in three runs. Shepard's two-run double ended the game in walk-off fashion in the fifth. Gracie Johns picked up two RBIs on a pinch-hit single in the third, while Green and Mohr each had one RBI.
Solana Carpenter pitched a complete game for FHSU, scattering five hits over five innings of work. She moved to 7-8 on the season. Ruby Nichols of NWOSU pitched 3.0 innings and allowed seven runs (three earned) on seven hits and took the loss. Katy Jones threw the final 1.1 innings for NWOSU and allowed three runs.
