HAYS – The TMP-Marian Monarchs played host to the Plainville Cardinals
in a key Mid-Continent League showdown, and the Lady Monarchs and the
Plainville boys came away with victories.

TMP’s Brooke Koenigsman scored 10 of her game-high 23 points
in the first quarter on a night where she surpassed 1,000 career points, and
the Monarchs cruised to a 77-35 victory.

The Monarchs (11-7 5-2 MCL), who had struggled with slow starts in recent
games, wasted no time finding a rhythm.

Koenigsman scored the game’s first bucket to go up 2-0. Those
points put her past 1,000 for her career at TMP. After being briefly honored
during a timeout, she scored eight more points in the first quarter. That,
combined with five points each from Hannah Rose and Claire Schippers and a pair
of Shalee Gottschalk three-pointers, helped the Monarchs rush out to a 28-3 lead
after the first quarter.

It was more of the same in the second quarter as Koenigsman
added seven more points on her way to a game-high 23, and TMP led at halftime
47-13.

The Monarchs outscored Plainville by seven in the third
quarter and, with the clock running in the fourth period, claimed the 77-35 victory.

Koenigsman led three in double-figures for the Monarchs.
Shalee Gottschalk scored a career-high 11 points, and Claire Schippers finished
with 13 points.

The TMP boys hadn’t played an overtime game in more than
two years, but after Thursday night, they had played two in less than a week.


They came up short in a 76-70 double-overtime loss to Plainville.

Thursday night’s contest was a back-and-forth affair from
the opening tipoff.

After TMP led 7-4 early, Plainville answered with a 9-0 run
to lead by six at 13-7.

The Monarchs answered right back thanks to a 12-0 run to
lead 19-13.

TMP matched that six-point lead twice in the quarter, only
to see Plainville cut the TMP lead to 25-22 at halftime.

The Cardinals brought all the momentum from their locker
room for the second half, outscoring TMP 20-9 in the third quarter and led
42-38 through three quarters.

TMP’s Ty Schmeidler scored 23 of his game-high 28 points in
the second half and 17 in the two overtime periods. 

His three-pointer in the final seconds of the fourth quarter
tied the game at 52 and sent the game to overtime.

In the first extra frame, the Monarchs led by as many as
four points but could not secure the victory at the free-throw line.

In the second overtime Plainville made 11-of-15 free throws
while TMP made just four of eight. The Cardinals outscored TMP 15-9 in the
final frame.

Plaine went on to secure the 76-70 2OT victory.

Schmeidler led all scorers with 28 points. Plainville’s
Jayden Morris led four scorers in double-figures with 14 points

🏀TMP girls cruise; boys drop 2OT thriller with Plainville

EMPORIA, Kan. – Fort Hays State fell to Emporia State at White Auditorium on Thursday night 58-44. The Tigers moved to 15-8 overall on the season and 8-6 in the MIAA, while the Hornets moved to 9-15 overall and 6-9 in the MIAA earning a split in the regular season series between the teams.

Struggles in recent road games continued for the Tigers, scoring just 22 points in each half. FHSU played solid defense throughout the night, entering the game leading the nation in scoring defense at 58.6 points per game. The Tigers held the Hornets right at that average, but could not muster enough offense to come out on the winning side.

The Tigers held a slim lead early in the game before the Hornets took the lead for good at the 13:08 mark and led the rest of the way. The Hornets eventually worked their lead into double figures by the 5:44 mark of the first half and led by 10 at halftime, 32-22.

The Tigers made a little push at the Hornets early in the second half, cutting the lead down to seven points, but the Hornets countered with an 11-0 run to get the lead out to 18 and kept their lead in double figures the remainder of the night. The closest the Tigers got the rest of the way was 12 points.

Kyle Grill&nbsp; led the Tigers in scoring with 13 points, followed by Kaleb Hammeke&nbsp;with 11. Shaun Riley pulled down a team-high seven rebounds. Hammeke and Riley each had a team-best three assists. The Tigers struggled to just 27.8 percent shooting from the field, while the Hornets finished at 44.2 percent.

Arhman Lewis was the only Hornet to score in double figures with 14 points. Karyiek Dixon was near a double-double with 10 rebounds and eight points.

Fort Hays State looks to snap a four-game slide in road contests on Saturday when it plays at Newman University. Tipoff is set for 3:30 p.m. at Fugate Gymnasium in Wichita.&nbsp;&nbsp;

EMPORIA, Kan. - The seventh-ranked Fort Hays State women's basketball team extended its winning streak to eight games with a 70-52 road win at Emporia State Thursday evening (Feb. 13). The Tigers (21-2, 12-2 MIAA) have now won six in a row against the Lady Hornets (9-15, 4-11 MIAA), the longest Tiger winning streak in series history, while FHSU has now won three in a row in Emporia for the first time in team history.

Olivia Hollenbeck&nbsp;led all scorers with 20 points in the win, helping the graduate student move into fourth on the all-time scoring list at FHSU with&nbsp;1,797 points in her career.

Emporia State scored first and led for all of 11 seconds before&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/bailey-wilborn/8337">Bailey Wilborn</a>&nbsp;hit her first of three 3-pointers to put the Tigers on top for good. Hollenbeck added a pair of layups over the next two minutes, helping FHSU to a 9-0 run. The Tigers later led by as many as 10 before the Lady Hornets scored the final seven points of the quarter to close within three at the end of the period, 17-14.

The home team kept things close over the first five minutes of the second quarter before FHSU closed the frame on another 9-0 run, building a 32-20 lead at the break. Katie DeGarmo&nbsp;totaled nine points in the period, outscoring Emporia State by three in the frame. The Tiger defense held ESU to 2-of-14 shooting in the second quarter while forcing five turnovers.

Emporia State pulled within five after opening the third quarter on a 7-0 run before Hollenbeck scored seven in a row on her own to push the lead back to a dozen. ESU managed to pull back within seven later in the quarter before the visitors again closed the frame on a 9-0 run, building its lead to 16 points, 54-38.

The Tigers then scored the first five points of the fourth quarter to extend the run to 14-straight points and build a 22-point lead. Fort Hays State cruised the rest of the way, trading buckets with the Lady Hornets and leading by no less than 18.In addition to her 20 points, Hollenbeck adding eight rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks. DeGarmo collected 13 points and 14 rebounds to record her sixth double-double of the season and the 42nd of her career. The graduate student also added six assists, two steals and one block.

Brooke Loewe&nbsp;tied for the team lead with six assists, while Wilborn totaled a season-high 11 points. Kate Dilsaver&nbsp;also scored 11 points in the win after hitting 2-of-3 from behind the arc.

The Tiger defense held Emporia State to 52 points, tied for their lowest scoring output of the season. The Tigers turned the ball over just eight times compared to 16 Lady Hornet turnovers.

FHSU's in-state road trip wraps up on Saturday when the Black and Gold makes its way to Wichita to take on Newman beginning at 1:30 p.m. The Tigers will then return to Hays for their final three home games beginning next Thursday when they host Missouri Southern beginning at 5:30 p.m.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Fort Hays State is coming off a pair of wins at home this past week over Northeastern State and Arkansas-Fort Smith. The Tigers held their opponents to an average of 50.5 points last week, lowering their nation's leading scoring defense to 58.6 points per game. The Tigers are the only team in NCAA Division II holding teams to an average of less than 60.Emporia State is coming off a road win at Missouri Southern last Saturday. The Hornets have won four of their last six games and the two losses in that stretch were by six or less points.

The contest between the Tigers and Lady Hornets is being played one day later than originally planned due to the winter weather in the area on Wednesday.

Fort Hays State moved to 20-2 on the year with its win over Arkansas-Fort Smith on Saturday, giving the Tigers at least 20 wins for the 14th season in a row. That streak is the longest active streak of 20-win seasons in Division II and is tied for fifth best across all NCAA divisions. The next-best active stretch of 20-win seasons in the MIAA is three (MWSU, MSSU, PSU), while the next-best streak in DII is Drury with 11.

Only four DI programs have longer active stretches of 20-win seasons, including UConn (32), Baylor (25), Stanford (23) and Florida Gulf Coast (21). 18 of FHSU's 20 wins have been by double figures, including 11 victories by 20 or more points, while both of the Tigers' losses have been by just one point. The Tigers also rank in the top 10 in DII in assist/turnover ratio (1.37, second), assists per game (19.0, third), field goal percentage (46.4, sixth) and winning percentage (.909, tenth).

Brooke Loewe&nbsp;has distributed 153 assists this season, already third-most in a single season in program history. At her current pace of 7.3 assists per game, the junior could break the school record of 166 assists (Kristi Leeper-Meis, 1990-91) this weekend. That total ranks second in the country and tops in the MIAA.

Olivia Hollenbeck leads the Tigers and ranks third in the conference with an average of 17.0 points per game. The graduate student picked up her second MIAA Athlete of the Week honor last week after averaging 24.5 points on 76.0 percent shooting in home wins over Northeastern State and Arkansas-Fort Smith. Currently with 1,777 career points, the Lincoln, Neb. native needs 14 points to move into fourth on the all-time scoring list at FHSU. Hollenbeck's shooting percentage of 63.8 percent is fifth best in the country.

Following another state-qualifying effort at its last meet, the Hays High boys’ swim team has its sights set on one of its biggest goals of the season.

The Indians, who finished second in team scoring at the Salina South meet last week and qualified yet another relay team for state, are set to compete in the Western Athletic Conference Championships Thursday in Garden City.

Even with the WAC event being the last meet to qualify for state, the swimmers told Coach Tyler to enter them in events at WAC where he thinks they can score the most points.

“We have one or two guys on the verge of qualifying individually,” Stein said. “But they all agreed to put the team first. They really want to win the WAC team title.”

Stein, a former all-state high school swimmer from Great Bend, is familiar with WAC swim programs. So he pondered for a while which events to strategically place his small squad of 11 swimmers.

Most WAC schools have much larger squads than Hays High, and “the guys know we’re underdogs coming into it. It’s going to take everyone swimming their best race for us to win it.”

Stein is confident that goal is attainable because the Indians have been turning in record-breaking performances all season long.

They have already qualified all three of their relay teams for state, senior Marshall Sook has qualified in two individual events, and the Indians have hit state-consideration times in other events as well.

“Just them having the faith in themselves that they can win WAC is big,” Stein said.

 </figure>Hays PostFollowing another state-qualifying effort at its last meet, the Hays High boys’ swim team has its sights set on one of its biggest goals of the season.The Indians, who finished second in team scoring at the Salina South meet last week and qualified yet another relay team for state, are set to compete in the Western Athletic Conference Championships Thursday in Garden City.Even with the WAC event being the last meet to qualify for state, the swimmers told Coach Tyler to enter them in events at WAC where he thinks they can score the most points.“We have one or two guys on the verge of qualifying individually,” Stein said. “But they all agreed to put the team first. They really want to win the WAC team title.”Stein, a former all-state high school swimmer from Great Bend, is familiar with WAC swim programs. So he pondered for a while which events to strategically place his small squad of 11 swimmers.Most WAC schools have much larger squads than Hays High, and “the guys know we’re underdogs coming into it. It’s going to take everyone swimming their best race for us to win it.”Stein is confident that goal is attainable because the Indians have been turning in record-breaking performances all season long.They have already qualified all three of their relay teams for state, senior Marshall Sook has qualified in two individual events, and the Indians have hit state-consideration times in other events as well.“Just them having the faith in themselves that they can win WAC is big,” Stein said.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Hunter Dickinson scored 19 points to help No. 17 Kansas beat Colorado 71-59 on Tuesday night, handing the Buffaloes their 13th straight loss.

Besides Dickinson, Kansas (16-7, 7-5 Big 12) had three other players in double figures. Zeke Mayo added 13 points and Dajuan Harris and KJ Adams each had 10 each.

Kansas has alternated between wins and losses in the last seven games. Despite the double-digit margin, this victory was anything but easy.

Colorado (9-14, 0-12) used an early second-half run to trim a 14-point halftime deficit to just 6. Kansas didn't lead by more than 11 points until Adams hit a short jumper just before the shot clock expired to make it 69-56 with 1:31 left.

Sebastian Rancik led Colorado with a season-high 19 points. Bangot Dak added 11 points for the Buffaloes, and Elijah Malone had 10.

Colorado: Even after Kansas pulled away late in the first half to take a 40-26 lead into the break, the Buffaloes opened the second half with a 10-2 run to trim the deficit to six points.

Kansas: The Jayhawks needed a big game from Dickinson and they got it. With backup center Flory Bidunga scoring just fuur points, Dickinson's 19 points were critical.

Kansas held Colorado without a field goal for almost seven minutes in the first half to help the Jayhawks open their largest lead of the game. The Buffaloes missed 10 straight shots during the stretch.

Colorado shot just 17.4% (4-of-23) from 3-point range. The Buffaloes were 1-of-11 in the first half.

🏀 No. 17 Kansas struggles before beating Colorado

RUSSELL -&nbsp;The TMP-Marian Monarchs went on the road Tuesday for a Mid-Continent League matchup with their long-time rivals the Russell Broncos and it was the Russell girls earning a 49-45 &nbsp;victory while the TMP boys outlasted Russell in overtime, 67-64.

GIRLS: Russell 49, TMP 45 Similar to the first meeting between the Monarchs (10-7, 4-2 MCL) and the Broncos, earlier this year in the fifth-place game of the MCL tournament, Russell (9-9, 5-3 MCL) ran out to a double-digital lead but this time there were able to hold off the Monarchs and picked up their first win against TMP since the 2019 season, 49-45.

Russell jumped out to an early 15-3 run with only Shalee Gottschalk’s three point field on the board for TMP.

Over the final minute of the first and start of the second quarter TMP’s Brooke Koenigsman combined with Reagan Allen to score eight in-a-row, making it 15-11 Russell early in the second quarter.

Russell again extended their lead to nine but&nbsp;TMP outscored Russell in the second quarter 16 to 9 as the Monarchs made it 24-21 Broncos at halftime.

Brynn Rebel connected on a three pointer out of the quarter break tying the game briefly at 24.&nbsp;

But Russell answered with an 11-2 run and led by seven at 38-31 through three quarters of the action

The Monarchs opened the final frame by putting together a 14-6 run that allowed TMP to take the 45-44 on a Koenigsman three pointer.

Koenigsman and Hannah Rose scored 12 of the 14 points during the run.

But on the next Russell possession, Aubrey Birney scored on an offensive rebound to put the Broncos us 46-45 and they never trailed again in a 49-45 victory.

Birney led all scorers with 12 points and seven rebounds. Koenigsman led TMP with 11 points and five rebounds.

BOYS: TMP 67, Russell 64 It would take overtime to decided a winner Tuesday between the TMP boys and the Russell boys and it was TMP coming up with the 67-64 win

Jacob Seib scored the first four point of the game for the Monarchs as they jumped to an early 8-3 lead.&nbsp;

The Monarchs (9-8, 5-1 MCL) led 15-7 after the first quarter.

TMP continued to build their first-half lead and led by as many at 13 at 24-11 on an offensive rebound and put back by Seib in the second quarter.

But the Monarchs went cold to close out the first half and that allowed Russell (9-8, 4-4 MCL) to climb back within one at halftime, 26-25.

They then took the lead to open the second half at 27-26. The third quarter featured 10 lead changes and four ties before the Monarchs took a 42-41 lead into the final period of the regulation.

In the fourth quarter Russell led by as many as four and TMP by as many as three but with TMP up three at 55-52, Jake Mooney hit a three pointer to send the game to overtime.

In the extra frame, the Monarchs were six-of-eight at the line and Carson Liles was a perfect four-for-four. He scored four points and Jacob Seib scored six points in the overtime leading TMP to the 67-64 victory.

Seib scored a career-high 23 points. Ty Schmeidler added 18 points and Liles finished with 14 points.

Russell’s Trey Carlson had 31 points, 13 rebounds and blocked three shots in a losing effort.

TMP with host Plainville on Thursday and Russell travels to Trego on Friday.&nbsp;

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Dug McDaniel scored a season-high 24 points and Kansas State beat No. 13 Arizona 73-70 on Tuesday night for its sixth straight victory — four against ranked opponents.

David N’Guessan had 16 points and seven rebounds for the resurgent Wildcats (13-11, 7-6 Big 12), who lost six in a row right before this winning streak. C.J. Jones added 10 points, and McDaniel finished with five steals, four rebounds and three assists.

KJ Lewis led Arizona (17-7, 11-2) with 15 points off the bench. The Wildcats missed a desperation heave at the buzzer, ending their six-game winning streak.

Jaden Bradley had 13 points, Henri Veesaar scored 12 and Tobe Awaka added 10 for Arizona, which lost for only the second time since Dec. 14.

Kansas State ended the first half on a 13-0 run to take a 35-29 lead into the break.

Arizona: Winning on the road in the Big 12 is tough, especially when facing one of the hottest teams in the country.

Kansas State: The Wildcats have caught fire and are playing like an NCAA Tournament team. If they can keep winning Big 12 games, it’ll be tough to keep them out.

Lewis fouled Max Jones on a 3-point attempt late in the first half, which led to three free throws and a 32-29 Kansas State lead.

Both teams were atrocious from the 3-point line as Arizona went 2 of 22 and Kansas State was 1 for 19 from deep.

Arizona hosts No. 6 Houston on Saturday. Kansas State visits BYU the same day.

NEW ORLEANS – The Fort Hays State men's track and field team is ranked No. 25 in the latest U.S. Track &amp; Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) NCAA Division II National Rating Index, released Tuesday.

The Tigers have recorded 21 NCAA Division II provisional qualifying marks so far this season, highlighted by standout performances from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-track-and-field/roster/hayden-albright/8477">Hayden Albright</a>. Albright has emerged as one of the top sprinters in the MIAA, securing provisional qualifying times in three events—the 60-meter dash (6.83), 200-meter dash (21.39), and 400-meter dash (47.93). He is still the only athlete in the conference to achieve provisional marks in all three sprint events this season.

In the field events,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-track-and-field/roster/jacob-clark/8482">Jacob Clark</a>&nbsp;continues to shine in the pole vault, ranking fourth in Division II after clearing 17-2.75 earlier this indoor season. 🏃‍♂️ Tiger men ranked 25th in latest USTFCCCA national rating index

The Fort Hays State women's basketball team moved up in both national polls this week, climbing to No. 7 in the WBCA DII Coaches Poll and jumping to No. 15 in the D2CSC Media Poll.

Fort Hays State (20-2) is one of 18 teams with at least 20 wins this season. This is the 14th season in a row that the Tigers have reached the 20-win plateau, the longest active streak in Division II and tied for the fifth-longest across all levels of NCAA women's basketball. The next-best streak in DII is Drury with 11, while the next-best streak in the MIAA is just three (MSSU, MWSU, PSU).

The Tigers picked up 432 points in the balloting process of the coaches poll this week, up 39 points from last week's total of 393 points. FHSU is 17 points behind sixth-ranked Texas-Tyler and 25 points behind fifth-ranked Pittsburg State, the only other MIAA school recognized in either poll.

This is the fourth time this season the Tigers have been ranked seventh in the coaches ranks and the 10th-such occurrence all-time. Fort Hays State is 14-1 all-time when ranked seventh, including a 4-1 record this season. The Tigers are 177-45 all-time when ranked, including a 124-26 mark when ranked inside the top 10.

The Tigers have now been included in the WBCA Top 25 in 116 separate releases, including 76 appearances in the top 10.

Fort Hays State added 72 points to its total in the media poll this week, now with 186 points in the voting process. The Tigers were also ranked 15th in the media poll back in late November (11/26).

Winners of seven in a row, the Tigers will be on the road this week beginning Thursday when they take on Emporia State beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Wrestling Coaches Association 5A rankings out Tuesday afternoon. Shawnee
Heights remains No. 1 with Basehor-Linwood second, Kapaun Mt. Carmel third and
Newton fourth.

Six Indians continue to be ranked with not changes again
this week. Sophomore Eleanor Stoffel remains second at 190, senior Tionna Napue
second at 135, sophomore Timber Lovewell third at 145, junior Lexie Barnett
third at 155, sophomore Kenlee Vehige fourth at 120 and sophomore Emersyn
Copper sixth at 100.
