The Monarchs placed third and the Indians fourth. Garden City won the team title by 11 strokes over second place Goodland.

TMP-Marian’s Brynn Schoepf led the local golfers with an 84 and placed fifth. Hays High's Ava Erbert shot a 91 and finished eighth.

Goodland’s Allison Cure defeated Garden City’s Brooke Savolt on the third hole of a playoff to win the individual title. Both had rounds of 79 in regulation.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Vanderbilt linebacker Langston Patterson and former Hawaii quarterback Brayden Schager are among 10 plaintiffs suing the NCAA over its redshirt rule that puts restrictions on the five years the athletes have to practice, play and graduate from college.

The class action lawsuit filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Tennessee alleges the NCAA violates U.S. antitrust laws with how its redshirt rule covers playing time for athletes during five seasons of eligibility. The lawsuit includes seven other named plaintiffs and potentially thousands of current and former NCAA football, baseball and tennis players.

“We are not challenging the NCAA’s rule limiting players to five years of eligibility to play college sports or the concept of a defined eligibility period generally," co-lead attorney Ryan Downton of the Texas Trial Group said in a statement.

“But the NCAA has no basis to prohibit a player who is working just as hard as all of his teammates in practice, in the weight room, and in the classroom, from stepping on the field (or court) to compete against another school in one of those seasons.”

The NCAA said in a statement that it stands by its eligibility rules.

“The NCAA is making changes to modernize college sports but attempts to dismantle widely supported academic requirements can only be addressed by partnering with Congress,” the organization said in a statement.

Downton is one of the attorneys who represented Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia when he won a preliminary injunction last December in his lawsuit that is being appealed by the NCAA. Pavia is in his sixth collegiate season and helped the Commodores to a season-opening win last week.

This class-action lawsuit was filed in the same federal court.

Currently, NCAA rules allow athletes to play four full seasons with an additional redshirt season that for football can include as many as nine games for players on a team that reaches the national championship. Athletes in any other sport cannot play even one minute and still redshirt.

The attorneys who filed the lawsuit said in a release that this forces athletes to unfairly pick between forfeiting a fifth year of eligibility to play as a freshman or sitting out an entire season for that redshirt year. With name, image and likeness earnings and compensation from NCAA schools, the suit alleges that acts as a financial penalty.

The NCAA Division II Management Council recommended in late July that the Division II executive board sponsor a proposal for the 2026 NCAA Convention that would allow athletes to play five seasons during their first 10 semesters or 15 quarters of full-time enrollment.

"It is time for NCAA Division I to follow suit,” Downton said.

The lawsuit wants to include all Division I athletes who first enrolled in the fall of 2022 or beyond who haven’t used a redshirt year or will have at least one year of eligibility available for the 2026-27 academic year.

Others would be included in a “Lost Opportunities Damages Class” for all Division I athletes who first enrolled no earlier than fall 2020 and no later than spring 2022 who did not use a redshirt year and exhausted their four seasons of eligibility by the end of 2024 for spring sports and 2025 for all sports.

Both Patterson and defensive lineman Yilanan Ouattara are in their fourth season at Vanderbilt. Both could play while pursuing advanced degrees if not for NCAA rules, according to the lawsuit.

“These rules have directly limited his athletic participation, ability to compete, leadership potential, and economic opportunities causing ongoing competitive and economic harm in violation of Section 1 of the Sherman Act,” according to the lawsuit.

The lawsuit also says Ouattara, who started playing football in 2019, could help his NFL prospects playing another season in the Southeastern Conference.

Schrager played six games as a freshman at Hawaii in 2021, too many to receive a redshirt year. He earned the starting job that he held through 2024.

Other plaintiffs include safety CJ Taylor and wide receiver Quincy Skinner Jr., who both played at Vanderbilt between 2021 and 2024. Running back BJ Harris Jr. started his career at Missouri and finished at Central Michigan in 2024.

Catcher Johnny Luetzow started playing for Santa Clara in 2023, and his teammate Henry Stewart started his Division I career during the 2022-23 season. Left-handed pitcher Jakob Russell played three Division III seasons at University of the Redlands and now is with Long Beach State.

Texas tennis player Timo Legout could get another season after the NCAA gave him a three-season penalty for his time between graduating high school in Europe and enrolling at Texas. He played only during the 2024-25 season.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs will be starting a new left guard and tackle, the latter coming off a major knee injury, when they travel nearly 12 hours to play their season opener on foreign soil against one of the NFL's best defenses.

If that sounds like a nightmare for Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, how would you describe last season?

The Chiefs pondered a half-dozen options back then in trying to protect his blind side, ultimately giving up on second-round pick Kingsley Suamataia and second-year pro Wanya Morris. The result was predictable. Mahomes was sacked 36 times, eight more than any other season in his eight-year NFL career. His sack rate was a career-worst 5.83% of drop-backs, and that translated into a net yards-per-attempt of fewer than 6 for the first time in his career.

The whole mess culminated at the Super Bowl, when the Philadelphia Eagles not only sacked Mahomes six times but hit him on 11 occasions in a 40-22 loss that never seemed as close as the final score might suggest.

“We knew we had to get better,” Chiefs general manager Brett Veach acknowledged.

Whether they did will be revealed on Friday night in Sao Paulo, Brazil, where the Chiefs open the season against the Los Angeles Chargers. They will be starting first-round pick Josh Simmons at left tackle against a defense that features pass rushers Khalil Mack and Tuli Tuipulotu, while Suamataia — now converted to guard — will be lining up next to him on the left side.

The duo solidified starting roles early in training camp along an offensive line that includes All-Pro center Creed Humphrey, right guard Trey Smith — who just signed a four-year, $94 million extension — and veteran right tackle Jawaan Taylor.

“I think every step of the way so far, they've done a great job of getting better and better, and kind of checking those boxes,” Mahomes said. “This will be a great test for them. This is a prolific D-line with Khalil Mack and really all throughout. They have great depth at edge, at D-tackles, and they were one of the best defenses in the league this past year.

“It'll be another test for these guys,” Mahomes said, “and I'm excited for them to go out there and accept the challenge.”

Simmons has been a revelation in the preseason, perhaps even surpassing what the Chiefs expected of him when they selected him No. 32 overall in the April draft. The biggest reason he slid so far in the first round was that Simmons tore his patellar tendon last season at Ohio State, and many teams were uncertain when he would be ready to play.

Simmons wound up attending every optional workout, mandatory minicamp and training camp practice, and he excelled when he got an opportunity in preseason games. Never once did it look as if his knee was causing him any problems.

“I took preseason with a grain of salt,” Simmons said. “It's kind of backups here, maybe a guy who doesn't play this position here, so I just kind of took it with a grain of salt. How was my technique? Did I take the right footsteps? Etcetera.”

He certainly made a believer of his most important critic: Andy Reid.

The Chiefs coach is an offensive line coach at heart, so he takes particular interest in the big guys up front. And while Reid was predictably understated in his assessment, he admitted that Simmons has looked the part of a franchise left tackle.

“I'll probably be saying this every week through the season, but it's his first year, so there are going to be certain things that he hasn't seen before,” Reid said, “and he's got to fight through that. But he's a talented kid and he's willing. He wants to do well and he's worked very hard. He's worked very hard to get himself into this position right here to be the starter.”

Not just any starter but perhaps the most important starter on the offensive line, one tasked with protecting Mahomes better than it did last season, when it was among the many reasons Kansas City came up short in the Super Bowl.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Tarik Skubal pitched seven innings of four-hit ball, the Tigers scored four times off Michael Wacha in the fifth inning, and Detroit went on to beat the Kansas City Royals 5-0 on Sunday in the rubber game of their three-game set.

Skubal (12-4) struck out four and walked one while bouncing back from his first loss in more than six weeks. Jake Rogers drove in two runs for Detroit, while Colt Keith and Gleyber Torres also drove in runs.

It was a crucial game between AL Central rivals. The Tigers began the day with a half-game lead over East-leading Toronto for the best record in the American League, while Kansas City had climbed within two games of Seattle in the wild-card race.

Wacha (8-11) was matching Skubal into the fifth, allowing a single baserunner while striking out four. But things suddenly went awry, beginning with a leadoff walk to Spencer Torkelson and a one-out single by Zach McKinstry.

Rogers followed with a fly ball that center fielder Tyler Tolbert badly misplayed, resulting in a two-run triple. Keith added a line drive that found a gap for a two-run double, and Torres a grounder that got through the infield to make it 4-0.

Wacha left after 4 2/3 innings. He was charged with four runs and four hits and a walk.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Avery Johnson threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to Joe Jackson with 42 seconds left and No. 17 Kansas State escaped with a 38-35 victory over FCS opponent North Dakota on Saturday night.

Kansas State avoided becoming the first ranked team to lose two games in August in the history of the poll, and also dodged its first 0-2 start since coaching great Bill Snyder’s first season in 1989. The Wildcats opened last week with a 24-21 loss to Iowa State in Dublin.

North Dakota — playing its its first game under coach Eric Schmidt — missed a chance to become the seventh first FCS (formerly I-AA) team to knock off a school in the AP Top 25. Montana was the last to accomplish the feat, beating then-No. 20 Washington 13-7 in 2021.

K-State blew a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter, with North Dakota taking a 35-31 lead on Sawyer Seidl's 20-yard run with 4:19 left.

Johnson then drove the Wildcats 81 yards on 10 plays for the winning score. Johnson was 28 of 43 for 318 yards and three touchdowns.

North Dakota led 21-17 at the half, and Kansas State took a 31-21 lead into the fourth. North Dakota started the rally with Jerry Kaminski's 22-yard touchdown pass to Korey Tai.

North Dakota's Jerry Kaminski was 23 of 38 for 231 yards and a touchdown. He also ran for two touchdowns.

The Fighting Hawks were looking for their first victory over an FBS opponent since edging Wyoming in 2015.

🏈 K-State dodges upset-minded FCS North Dakota on last-minute TD

HAYS -&nbsp;With the start of the season less than a week away, the TMP-Marian Monarchs football team hosted its first-ever jamboree Friday night at Lewis Field in Hays.

The Monarchs hosted MCL rivals Plainville, Larned, and Ellsworth.

"I thought we competed really well today," TMP coach Grant Stephenson said." 

"You practice for two weeks, and you almost get tired of it," Stephenson said. "You need to see something against someone else, and so it was nice to have this, and the way our guys competed tonight, I told them I was proud of them."

After pinch-hitter Tyler Tolbert drew a seven-pitch walk from Tyler Holton (5-4), Witt connected for his 20th home run, a 427-foot shot to dead center. Witt, who singled earlier, extended his hitting streak to 18 games.

Lucas Erceg (6-3) struck out one in a 1-2-3 eighth inning before Carlos Estévez worked around Riley Greene’s one-out double for his 36th save.

The Tigers jumped ahead 1-0 in the third on Gleyber Torres’ sharp, two-out single. Detroit is 55-17 when scoring first.

Maikel Garcia tied it in the fourth with his 15th homer.

Making his Royals debut, Stephen Kolek threw six innings and allowed a run and four hits, and struck out three.

With Seattle's 4-3 loss to Cleveland, Kansas City moved within two games of the Mariners for the final AL wild-card spot.

Tigers starter Jack Flaherty allowed a run and four hits with two walks and four strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings.

Dillon Dingler had three of the seven hits by the Tigers, who were 1 for 9 with runners in scoring position.

With runners at second and third in the seventh, Royals right fielder Mike Yastrzemski fielded Trey Sweeney’s shallow fly and his throw home skipped past catcher Salvador Perez. LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Jalon Daniels threw for 280 yards and four touchdowns despite playing just one drive in the second half and Kansas easily defeated Wagner 46-7 on Friday night.

Emmanuel Henderson hauled in six of Daniels' passes for 130 yards and two touchdowns for Kansas (2-0). Daniel Hishaw rushed for 89 yards and a touchdown, all in the first half.

Kansas outgained Wagner 623-143, including 285-53 on the ground and 346-90 through the air. The Jayhawks had 32 first downs, compared to just six for Wagner.

But Kansas was not flawless. The Jayhawks had the game's only two turnovers, and both of those came in the red zone. They were just 4 of 10 on third down.

The Kansas defense did its part, limiting Wagner to just one drive of more than 20 yards.

Jack Stevens was 13 of 20 for 90 yards and a touchdown for Wagner (0-1). No Seahawks runner gained more than 25 yards on the ground.

Kansas was clearly better than its over-matched opponent from the FCS, but the Jayhawks left room for improvement. The Jayhawks put plenty on the tape, including a no-huddle offense on their second first-quarter drive, and some long passes from Daniels to his receivers.

Wagner will face Georgetown on the road on Sept. 6. Kansas will travel to face Missouri in Columbia for the first matchup between the former conference rivals since 2011.

HAYS, Kan. – In a matchup of ranked teams to open the 2025 season, No. 13/12 Angelo State defeated RV/No. 20 Fort Hays State 28-7 on Thursday night at Lewis Field. A mixed bag of creative offensive plays helped Angelo State to the victory, outscoring FHSU 14-0 in the second half after leading by just seven at the break.

Angelo State's offensive attack was highlighted by four passing touchdowns, including a 60-yard strike, which contributed to their consistent scoring across all four quarters. The Tigers managed a single touchdown in the second quarter but were unable to capitalize further, with their only red zone appearance ending in a turnover. Angelo State's defense recorded four sacks and forced a fumble, maintaining control throughout the game.

In the first quarter, the Fort Hays State offense sputtered, managing only 14 rushing yards and one pass completion for eight yards. The Rams struck first with a 60-yard touchdown pass over the top of the Tiger defense from Braeden Fuller to Zeek Freeman.

Angelo State added a touchdown in the second quarter, a 9-yard pass from Fuller to Corey Sandolph to extend its lead to 14-0. However, Fort Hays State's offense found a bit of a spark as Caleb Heavner connected with Ethan Hilliman on a 22-yard touchdown pass with 1:54 to go in the half. The Tigers got the ball back on an interception by Michael Chavez, but 52-yard field goal attempt with time expiring in the first half fell off the mark.

The Tigers had momentum going into the second half, getting the ball first out of the break. However, the ASU defense was up to the task as it continued to stymie the FHSU offense. ASU held FHSU to just 45 yards in the quarter and moved back ahead by 14 when it used two of its quarterbacks on a play that produced a 32-yard touchdown pass from Kaeden Smith to Donny Bishop.

The Tigers had an opportunity to cut back into the Rams' lead in the fourth when it moved the ball down to the ASU 11. But, a fumble ended any hope of a Tiger comeback. ASU went on to put the game away with a 9-play, 86-yard drive capped on the second touchdown reception by Sandolph from Fuller, this time from 30 yards out. That score produced the final 21-point margin.

Angelo State outgained FHSU in total offense 366 to 268. Fuller threw for 177 yards and three touchdowns for the Rams. Heavner finished with 172 passing yards on a 20-of-35 effort for the Tigers. Both quarterbacks had one interception in the game.

Ethan Hilliman led the Tiger receivers with five catches for 49 yards. Joshua Clark led in rushing with 55 yards. Jayden Jones led the ground attack for ASU with 79 yards, while Freeman finished with 72 receiving yards.

On the defensive side of the ball Gavin Meyers led the Tigers with 10 tackles. Gaven Haselhorst had a pair of sacks to go with six tackles and a forced fumble. Chavez had four tackles to go with his interception. Marquis Brown led the ASU defense with 13 tackles and an interception.

The result snapped a 6-game win streak for FHSU at home. ASU evened the young series history between the teams after FHSU won the season opener the year before 21-7 in Hays.

The Tigers have another strong test next week when they travel to play CSU Pueblo, currently ranked No. 6/7 in the nation, on Thursday, September 4 in Colorado. The Thunderwolves ran away with a 43-0 win in their season opener over South Dakota Mines.

Fort Hays State opens the 2025 season on Thursday night when it plays host to Angelo State in the Vyve Broadband Kickoff Classic at Lewis Field Stadium. Both the Tigers (No. 20) and Rams (No. 12) are ranked among the preseason top 25 of the D2Football.com Poll, while the Rams (No. 13) are a top 25 team in the AFCA poll. This will be the second-straight year the teams meet in the season opener in Hays.

Fort Hays State knocked off a No. 24 nationally ranked Angelo State team in the season opener of 2024 by a score of 21-7. The game never got going on the original night it was scheduled due to storms in the Hays area, so the game was postponed to the following day. Fort Hays State went on to win the weather-delayed contest 21-7 in its first-ever meeting with Angelo State in football.

The season-opening win for Fort Hays State started a dominant season at home in 2024, a perfect 6-0 at Lewis Field Stadium. Angelo State was among two nationally ranked teams the Tigers defeated in Hays last year, the other being No. 12 ranked Central Missouri by a score of 31-21 for Homecoming. The Tigers knocked off three nationally ranked teams overall in 2024, despite falling just short of an NCAA playoff berth in Super Region 3 with an 8-3 record.

Angelo State, on the other hand, lost both of its non-conference games to open last season. The Rams took a loss to Emporia State following their loss to FHSU. From that point, the Rams got red-hot, reeled off nine-straight wins to go undefeated in Lone Star Conference play, and made the NCAA playoffs with a 9-2 record in Super Region 4. They fell in the opening round of the playoffs at home to Bemidji State of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.

This year, the meeting between FHSU and ASU will be within the same super region. Both teams are part of Super Region 4 after a realignment of super regions in NCAA Division II. The MIAA, Great American Conference (GAC), Lone Star Conference (LSC) and Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) are all in the same super region now, while the GLIAC and GLVC are no longer part of FHSU's super region. The GLIAC has perennial powerhouse programs Ferris State and Grand Valley State out of Michigan. Ferris State claimed its third national title over the last four years in 2024.

In last year's meeting, Fort Hays State built a 14-0 lead through one quarter before Angelo State cut the lead in half with a second-quarter touchdown. Neither team scored in the third before FHSU pushed its lead back out to 14 early in the fourth quarter and eventually won by that margin. Shane Watts, who went on to earn All-America honors at running back in 2024, scored two of FHSU's three touchdowns. Watts recently signed with the New England Patriots of the NFL in 2025 and played in two preseason games. Ryan Allen had the other Tiger touchdown in the game, a leaping 19-yard touchdown reception. It was the second-straight year Allen scored a touchdown on his first reception of the season. FHSU had three players finish with double-digit tackles in the game, lead by Makel Williams with 12.

The Tigers had a strong defense all throughout 2024 and the 203 yards they limited the Rams to in the season opener last year was the second fewest they allowed in a game throughout the season. Their lowest was a smothering of a No. 11-ranked Emporia State squad in Emporia on November 2 when they held the Hornets to just 138 yards of total offense in a 36-7 win. FHSU finished the 2024 season with the top scoring defense in the MIAA at just 16.9 points allowed per game. The Tigers had the second-best total defense in the conference, allowing just 330.1 yards per game in one of the top offensive conferences in the nation. Central Oklahoma (538.2) and Central Missouri (526.1) owned the top two total offenses nationally and were the only teams in Division II to average 500 yards or more of total offense per game.

Fort Hays State returns seven of its starters on offense from 2024, but just four on defense. Headlining the offensive starters returning are All-MIAA selections Josh Shaw (OL), Porter Dannevik (OL), Cale Cormaney (TE) and Caleb Heavner (QB). All-MIAA performers John Johnson (LB) and Gaven Haselhorst (DL) are among the four returning starters on the defensive side of the ball. Shaw and Johnson were named to the D2Football.com Elite 100 Watch List for 2025. It was the second-straight year Johnson was on the list.

After taking over the starting role at quarterback midway through last season, Heavner went on to set an FHSU record for completion percentage in a season (70.2). He threw for 1,649 yards and 13 touchdowns, while doing a good job of limiting mistakes with just two interceptions for the year. He added 353 rushing yards on the ground and reached the endzone five times carrying the ball. Shaw and Dannevik helped the FHSU offense average better than 400 yards of total offense per game for the second-straight year, while Cormaney notched over 300 receiving yards from his tight end position.

Johnson ranked second on the team in tackles per game last year (8.0), notching 63 in eight games of action after fighting through a mid-season injury. Haselhorst notched 31 tackles as a defensive end and finished with 3.5 sacks, second on the team only to Myles Menges, who earned MIAA Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2024. He was the fourth Tiger to be the Defensive Player of the Year in the MIAA under head coach Chris Brown, joining Sie Doe, Jr. (2016), Nathan Shepherd (2017), and Jose Delgado (2018).

Angelo State is headed by quarterback Braeden Fuller, who was the Lone Star Conference Offensive Player of the Year in 2024. He had numbers similar to FHSU's Heavner in regards to a high touchdown to low interception ratio. He finished with 2,318 passing yards with 19 touchdowns and just two interceptions, while rushing for 678 yards and 10 touchdowns. The Tigers limited Fuller to a 2024 season-low 48 passing yards and just three yards of rushing (his second-lowest rushing total of the season). The Tigers were the only team to hold him under 100 yards passing in a game last year.

Both FHSU and ASU head coaches are looking for significant wins on Thursday night. Chris Brown of FHSU is seeking his 90th win, already the all-time wins leader in FHSU history. Now in his 14th season, Brown is the longest tenured Tiger head coach, passing the 13 seasons coached by Wayne McConnell. Jeff Girsch is seeking his 50th win at Angelo State, this being just his seventh year guiding the Rams.

This will be the second of three-straight season openers between FHSU and Angelo State. The Rams will host the third installment in San Angelo, Texas in 2026.

CHICAGO (AP) — Salvador Perez hit a leadoff homer and a two-run double in Kansas City's eight-run fifth inning as the Royals pummeled the Chicago White Sox 12-1 on Wednesday night.

Perez’s double gave him 993 RBIs — one more than Amos Otis for third place in Royals history. Next on the list is Hal McRae with 1,012. George Brett leads with 1,596.

Ryan Bergert (2-1) pitched a season-high six innings, allowing one run and six hits for his first win in five starts with Kansas City. Jonathan Bowlan, Angel Zerpa and Daniel Lynch IV finished with a scoreless inning apiece.

Perez tied it at 1 with his 23rd homer when he connected off Aaron Civale (3-9). Bobby Witt Jr. chased Civale with a two-out, two-run single and Vinnie Pasquantino greeted Tyler Gilbert with a two-run single for a 5-1 lead. Adam Frazier doubled in Perez for an 8-1 advantage.

Mike Yastrzemski hit his 14th homer — a three-run shot off Gilbert in the sixth to make it 11-1. Yastrzemski doubled and scored on Maikel Garcia's single in the eighth. Witt went 2 for 4 to extend his hitting streak to 16 games.

Andrew Benintendi hit his 15th home run in the Chicago fourth. The drive came on a pitch 1.02 feet above the ground, the lowest pitch he's homered on in his career, according to MLB Statcast.

Civale gave up five runs in 4 2/3 innings. Gilbert retired one batter and allowed six runs.

Bergert earned his first win since beating the New York Yankees 4-3 on May 5 with San Diego.

The White Sox need to win 15 of their final 29 games to avoid reaching 100 losses for a third straight season.
