🏈🎥Fort Hays State football at MIAA Media Day

EMPORIA, Kan. – Fort Hays State Football was tabbed third in both the MIAA Preseason Coaches and Media Polls, released on Monday (July 28) at MIAA Football Media Day. The Tigers are picked where they finished last year in the standings, coming off an 8-3 overall, 6-3 MIAA performance in 2024.

Fort Hays State tied for third in the MIAA regular season standings with Central Missouri, both at 6-3. The Tigers were right on the cut line of getting into the NCAA Playoffs, ranked eighth in the final super region rankings release as the top seven teams were selected to the playoffs. The Tigers defeated Central Missouri head-to-head in Hays last year and got the nod for the higher spot in the preseason polls with Central Missouri listed fourth in both.

Central Oklahoma and Pittsburg State led the way in both polls, coming off NCAA playoff appearances in 2024. UCO was picked first in the coaches poll, while PSU slightly edged UCO for first in the media poll despite UCO having more first-place votes. Central Oklahoma was the MIAA champion in 2024 with an 8-1 conference mark and went on to finish the year 12-2 overall by advancing to the Round of 16 in the NCAA playoffs. Pittsburg State finished 2024 8-3 overall after going 7-2 in MIAA action. The Gorillas lost their opening game of the NCAA playoffs.

Fort Hays State returns seven of its regular starters from the 2024 season on offense, but just four on defense. FHSU had the third-best scoring offense and fourth-best total offense in the MIAA last year, but backed it with the best scoring defense and second-best total defense in the conference. The Tigers return six All-MIAA selections from last year's squad in 2025. The group includes Josh Shaw (OL), Porter Dannevik (OL), Cale Cormaney (TE), and Caleb Heavner (QB) on offense, and John Johnson (LB) and Gaven Haselhorst (DL) on defense.

For the second-straight year, Fort Hays State will open with Angelo State at home on Thursday, August 28. The Tigers will have five home games throughout the 2025 regular season, which includes two in September, one in October, and one in November. The Tigers start with two non-conference games (one home, one away) before jumping into MIAA play for its final nine games of the regular season.

🏈FHSU Football Tabbed Third in 2025 MIAA Preseason Polls

Hays Post Sports HAYS – Lonnie Melvin fired a four-under 67 at Smoky Hill Country
Club to claim the 2025 Hays Merchant Golf tournament championship by two shots
over second-place Nick Vonlintel.

The annual tournament was played July 26th at the
Fort Hays Municipal Golf Course and July 27th at Smoky Hill Country Club.

Alex Hobelmann’s three-under 69 at the Fort Hays Municipal Course
paced the field after day one. 

Vonlintel and Seth Oakley were both one shot back with a
round of 70. Melvin was four shots off the lead with a 73.

On the second day, Melvin was able to erase the deficit and
secure the two shot victory over Vonlintel, 140 to 142.

Jacob George finished third with rounds of 73 and 74 for a
combined scored of 147.

Hobelmann followed his 69 with a 79 and his two-day total
was 148.

Brendon Goss rounded out the top five with rounds of 74 and
76 for a total of 150.

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — Kansas City Chiefs right tackle Jawaan Taylor made his training camp debut after missing their first four practices because of a knee injury, and he was right in the mix with the starters Sunday as they put on pads for the first time.

Backup tight end Tre Watson, who also had been out with a groin injury, passed his physical and joined Taylor on the field.

Taylor has started all 33 regular-season games he has played for Kansas City over the past two seasons. But his blocking metrics coupled with a propensity for penalties mean his job is far from secure. The Chiefs signed backup 49ers tackle Jaylon Moore to a two-year, $30 million deal and used their first-round draft pick on Ohio State standout Josh Simmons.

After the first week of camp, Simmons appears to have the inside track on the left tackle job, which was a problem position for the Chiefs all of last season. So when Taylor returned, it was in a rotation with Moore for first-team snaps on Sunday.

“We're getting back in the swing. He hasn't done anything," Chiefs coach Andy Reid said of Taylor, who showed up on the injury report with knee trouble much of last season and had offseason surgery. “But all three are kind of competing there.”

Reid said he was pleased with the way Simmons looked in his first padded practice. There was some question about whether he would even be ready for camp after tearing his patellar tendon in a game with the Buckeyes last season.

“He did some good things. I wasn't focusing on him the whole time, but I thought he did some good things,” Reid said. “He's a work in progress. He has to keep working. Young guy.”

Meanwhile, Reid said cornerback Kristian Fulton had a procedure to “clean out” his knee in the spring, which is why he remains on the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/nfl-rosters-injured-reserve-pup-ff72ea1b9734719ea8f14bf4a0dc25b5">physically unable to perform list</a>. The Chiefs gave him a two-year, $20 million deal in March.

🏈Right tackle Jawaan Taylor returns to practice as Chiefs put pads on for first time in training camp

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Jared Allen will be wearing a cowboy hat next weekend in Canton for his&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/football-hall-of-fame-a8a41e9c62d040159b825d42bda6f8b2">Hall of Fame</a>&nbsp;induction, the signature apparel that inspired his celebratory calf-roping act after each sack and still serves as a fitting snapshot of his off-the-field life.

Raised on a horse ranch in Northern California, Allen was audacious enough at age 8 to tell his father he planned to become a professional football player.

He fulfilled that vision with a relentless vengeance on the offensive tackles tasked with blocking him and the quarterbacks who tried to escape, using exceptional quickness, creative moves and pure strength to accumulate 136 sacks and four first team All-Pro selections as a defensive end over a 12-year career in the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/NFL">NFL</a>.

“When you're doing what you love to do, you want to honor the game by being great, not in an arrogant way but in a way to show respect and gratitude for all those who came before you,” said Allen, who will be honored at the ceremony next weekend along with Antonio Gates, Eric Allen and Sterling Sharpe. “I always wanted to go out there and let people know I genuinely loved playing this game.”

First making his mark with the Kansas City Chiefs and then reaching another level with the Minnesota Vikings, Allen was one of the most fun-loving players of his generation.

That went all the way down to his routine of running away from the play, dropping to one knee, twirling his hand as if he had a lasso and pretending to catch a calf in a rodeo before extending both arms outward to the crowd. He was a showman who had&nbsp;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mMdCi9Oomho">plenty to show for it</a>.

The crossroads of Allen's career came upon consummation of the 2008 trade that sent him from the Chiefs to the Vikings, his promising start in the NFL tainted by off-the-field trouble that followed him from Idaho State.

Chiefs general manager Carl Peterson, who drafted Allen in the fourth round in 2004, soured on the prodigious pass rusher after two different citations for drunken driving in 2006 and declared him a “young man at risk.” Allen was irked by the lack of front-office support and asked to be dealt, absent a new contract.

After accumulating 15 1/2 sacks in 14 games in 2007 after serving a two-game suspension, Allen finally got his wish. Having given up alcohol after the second arrest, he redoubled his conditioning efforts in determination to prove his worth.

“I loved Kansas City. I wanted to spend my whole career there. Unfortunately, you learn the business side of the game can be a little ruthless, and I'm just stubborn enough to want to get my way,” Allen said.

The Vikings sent their first-round pick and two third-round picks in 2008 to the Chiefs, then signed Allen to a six-year, $73 million deal that at the time was the largest in history for a defensive player. He earned every penny, too, without any salary reductions or early releases that often follow big-money contracts in a league that has little patience for declining production by players with large cap hits.

“With a contract like that and a trade like that comes a lot of pressure,” Allen said. “It's not in my saddle to rest on my laurels. The most impressive thing was I was able to play it out. I think I represented myself well."

Allen averaged more than 14 sacks per season over six years with the Vikings, including a career-best 22 sacks in 2011 that came within one-half of the record set by Michael Strahan and later matched by T.J. Watt.

Allen is officially 12th on the career sacks list, a statistic the NFL didn’t compile until 1982.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.pro-football-reference.com/leaders/sacks_career.htm">Research by Pro Football Reference</a>&nbsp;on all games played before then produced a comprehensive list that has Allen with the 16th-most sacks in history, after winding down his career with the Chicago Bears in 2014 and being traded to the Carolina Panthers the following season.

While he ditched his drinking problem and cleaned up off the field, Allen never lost his thrill-seeking lifestyle, once running with the bulls in Spain, and killing a wild boar in Texas with a knife. He was a joke-cracking, wide-smiling life of the locker room with the Vikings, where he forged lifelong friendships that transcended the bitter disappointment of losing in overtime to the New Orleans Saints in the NFC championship game after the 2009 season.

Picked up at the airport in Minneapolis after the trade by defensive line coach Karl Dunbar and the alpha males of the position group, Kevin Williams and Pat Williams, Allen quickly knew he was in the right place.

“I am as competitive as they come, and it was brought to another level walking into that room,” Allen said. “The minute I got into that car, Pat and Kevin started talking trash about how I couldn’t play the run.”

Allen formed the alpha center of those Vikings teams with the Williamses on one of the best defensive lines in the league. He frequently was at his best when the lights were on, including a 4 1/2-sack game on Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers when Brett Favre quarterbacked the Vikings to a 2009 victory in his first revenge matchup against the Packers.

The Vikings have a long history of dominant defensive linemen, with Alan Page, Carl Eller, Chris Doleman and John Randle all enshrined before Allen in Canton. The famed Purple People Eaters — Page, Eller, Jim Marshall and Gary Larsen — helped the Vikings reach four Super Bowls and set a high standard for their successor.

“You’re never going to race ’em, but I wanted people to talk about myself, Pat and Kevin,” Allen said. “We wanted to be the fiercest, nastiest front four you could be, and that was all to pay respect to the guys who did it before us.”

 </figure>MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Jared Allen will be wearing a cowboy hat next weekend in Canton for his&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/football-hall-of-fame-a8a41e9c62d040159b825d42bda6f8b2">Hall of Fame</a>&nbsp;induction, the signature apparel that inspired his celebratory calf-roping act after each sack and still serves as a fitting snapshot of his off-the-field life.Raised on a horse ranch in Northern California, Allen was audacious enough at age 8 to tell his father he planned to become a professional football player.He fulfilled that vision with a relentless vengeance on the offensive tackles tasked with blocking him and the quarterbacks who tried to escape, using exceptional quickness, creative moves and pure strength to accumulate 136 sacks and four first team All-Pro selections as a defensive end over a 12-year career in the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/NFL">NFL</a>.“When you're doing what you love to do, you want to honor the game by being great, not in an arrogant way but in a way to show respect and gratitude for all those who came before you,” said Allen, who will be honored at the ceremony next weekend along with Antonio Gates, Eric Allen and Sterling Sharpe. “I always wanted to go out there and let people know I genuinely loved playing this game.”First making his mark with the Kansas City Chiefs and then reaching another level with the Minnesota Vikings, Allen was one of the most fun-loving players of his generation.That went all the way down to his routine of running away from the play, dropping to one knee, twirling his hand as if he had a lasso and pretending to catch a calf in a rodeo before extending both arms outward to the crowd. Carlos Estévez worked around a leadoff double in the ninth for his 27th save.

Cameron (5-4) was stingy after the first, when Steven Kwan, Angel Martínez and José Ramírez began the game by loading the bases with nobody out. Cameron rebounded to retire David Fry, Carlos Santana and Arias, then allowed only two baserunners in the next four innings. He also struck out six in another dominant performance.

The 26-year-old left-hander from nearby St. Joseph, Missouri, lowered his ERA to 2.44 and has not lost a game since June 27.

Joey Cantillo (2-1) lasted only four innings for Cleveland on a hot, humid day in Kansas City. He allowed three runs and three hits and four walks while striking out four in his fifth start since joining the Guardians' rotation.

Cantillo had twice faced Kansas City in relief this season, retiring all six he faced and striking out four of them.

The fruitless first proved to be pivotal for Cleveland, when Fry flied out to right, Santana struck out and Arias grounded out to end the inning. Kansas City proceeded to coax across two runs in the bottom half and never trailed.

⚾Maikel Garcia homers to lead the Royals over Guardians

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Royals placed All-Star left-hander Kris Bubic on the 15-day injured list with a rotator cuff strain and outfielder Jac Caglianone on the 10-day IL with a strained left hamstring amid a series of moves before their series finale against Cleveland on Sunday.

The Royals also welcomed outfielder Randal Grichuk, who was&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/royals-diamondbacks-trade-87f6f60e37cd00beaeb9c3924e2c922b">acquired on Saturday night</a>&nbsp;in a deal that shipped reliever Andrew Hoffmann to Arizona, and recalled right-handed reliever Jonathan Bowlan from Triple-A Omaha to help the bullpen.

Bubic walked the first four batters he faced and only managed to last 2 2/3 innings&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/guardians-royals-score-e9dff49ae08ba862a081e7ebbf3ba835">against the Guardians on Saturday</a>, when he started the second game of a split doubleheader. He needed 42 pitches to get through the first inning, and he wound up allowing four runs and three hits in his shortest start since Sept. 18, 2022, at Boston.

“He’s getting some further testing and then we’ll talk to the doc here and see what we got,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said.

Bubic said he’s experienced some shoulder soreness for much of the season, but he’s been able to pitch through it at a break-through level. Even with the rocky start Saturday, he has a 2.55 ERA — the fifth-best mark in the American League.

“I mean, you see how he’s performed,” Quatraro said. “Most pitchers when they go out there, they feel something almost every time. The severity of it and his ability to continue to deal with it has been manageable, by his own admission. ... And it’s gotten to the point where, you know, he doesn’t, and we don’t feel like it’s best for him to keep fighting through it.”

The Royals rotation has suddenly thinned considerably. Left-hander Cole Ragans remains on the IL with a strained rotator cuff and is not expected back until late August, and right-hander Michael Lorenzen is progressing from his strained left oblique but may need to make a rehab start before he returns to the Royals sometime in August.

The Royals already have had to plug one spot with 45-year-old Rich Hill, who pitched well in his debut for them this past week.

Caglianone, the Royals’ 22-year-old power-hitter, felt tightness in his hamstring while running down a double into the gap in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader. Then he felt the twinge again while running to first on a groundout later the inning.

The timing of the injury could have been worse: The Royals had been working on a deal to land Grichuk, who nearly signed with them in the offseason but will now help them primarily against left-handed hitting for the rest of the season.

“You’ve seen our outfield had gotten very heavily left-handed. Something we thought we needed to add was a right-handed bat,” said Quatraro, whose team began the day 51-54 and 4 1/2 games back in the AL wild-card race.

Grichuk was 0 for 2 on Saturday night in Pittsburgh, flying out in the second inning and the fourth, when he was told by the Diamondbacks that he had been traded. He hugged several teammates in the dugout and then headed out, catching a flight first thing Sunday so that he could be in Kansas City in time for the series finale against the Guardians.

He was put in the starting lineup right away, batting sixth and playing right field.

“When they called they said, ‘If you’re willing to be here to play, you know, we want you in the starting lineup,’” Grichuk said, “and yeah, I want to play. That’s kind of my M.O. And so I said, ‘Let’s do it. We’ll make it happen, even if it’s crazy travel.’”

The one hang-up was Grichuk’s number: He’s always worn 15 and that number was taken by backup catcher Luke Maile. But it turns out the two knew each other from their days together in Toronto, so a quick text message smoothed things out. Maile took No. 17 and gave his old buddy No. 15 — “We’ll work something out,” Grichuk said of potential compensation.

Series Saturday in Wichita.

The Larks (30-4-1) dug themselves an early hole, allowing
three runs in the second inning and a fourth run in the third inning for a 4-0
deficit through three innings.

Hays got themselves back in the contest with a three-run
fourth inning. All three runs came on a two-out double to left by Lane Sparks,
cutting the MVP lead to 4-3.

But Oklahoma once again extended its lead, scoring two runs
in the fifth and single runs in the sixth and seventh innings as they built an
8-3 lead.

Heading into the ninth, with the Larks still trailing by five,
their bats came to life, scoring six runs on their way to the 9-8 victory.

The Larks opened the inning with three walks, loading the
bases. With two outs, a fourth walk in the inning, by Dylan LaRue, made it 8-4 MVP.

&nbsp;A balk scored a
runner from third, and then Thomas Lyssy delivered a two-run bloop single to
right, cutting the MVP lead to 8-7.

In the next at bat, a flyball to centerfield, that would
have ended the game, was dropped by the centerfielder to keep the inning alive.

The Larks then watched MVP unravel as they allowed three
straight walks, the final two with the bases loaded, allowing a run to score
each time, putting Hays up 9-8.

The Larks sent 12 men to the plate in the inning. They
collected just one hit in the inning and took advantage of seven walks.

All nine of the Larks runs came with two outs.

Trey Watson earned the victory for Hays. In his two innings
of relief, he allowed just one unearned run and two runs, with two walks and
two strikeouts.

Julio Ramos earned the save with a scoreless ninth inning.
He struck out two.

Lane Sparks finished two-for-five with four RBIs. Thomas
Lyssy also collected two hits, and Paul Smith was the only other Lark hitter to

Riley Leiker, 10, of Hays, is accustomed to success. 

The Hays Strider athlete, who was the 2024 AAU National Champion in the shot put, is ranked the top thrower going into this year's Junior Olympic meet. Her toss of 29’ 4 ½” at the regional qualifier in Springfield, Missouri in June placed her at the top of AAU youth throwers for 2025.

Riley’s work ethic is testament to her farming family, where all the children are also athletes on the Striders team. Brothers Logan and Jacob run and throw for the Hays Striders and will be members of the Hays High teams this coming school year.

 Riley is also a 4-H member and has enjoyed success there as well. Her bucket calves have won reserve champion and champion over the past several years.

Riley’s shot put coach, Traci Vap, said “Riley's a really dedicated and driven person with an awesome attitude. She's super focused on her goals, and it shows. I've seen her make huge strides in understanding her technique and putting my coaching into action.”

Not only does she throw the shot, but she runs a very respectable 400 meter dash and 800 meter run, taking first place in every meet she competed in this year. In fact, her favorite event is the 400. “Riley is very, very competitive,” Strider coach Dave Haberman stated. “She trains without question and has really invested herself into our program. Her results reflect that.”

Her pre-meet day meal is her favorite food - steak, with a homemade breakfast burrito the morning of competition. In preparation for a meet, she combines a series of warm-ups and stretches, and “lots of water.” Her regiment leaves no room for junk food, even when traveling, she added, but her favorite post-meet meal is “ice cream!”

“When Riley first came to the Striders, she tried her hardest to keep up with the older athletes,” Haberman stated. “She would cut across the football field just to be able to run with the group.” Now, she is leading the pack for the girls and they are trying to keep up with her. She now sees herself as a mentor and role model for the younger girls on the team.

Riley’s favorite subject in school is math and she plans to become a doctor, but not before accomplishing her dream of being an Olympic runner and thrower. Her future may include the pentathlon and heptathlon but she has some reservations about hurdles. “We have a really good hurdle coach in Brooklyn Pfeifer and I am sure she would get Riley up to speed on the hurdles,” Haberman said. “I think Riley could accomplish anything she set her mind to.”

Vap, herself an All-American athlete at Pittsburg State University, added, “What really makes her stand out is how calm she stays under pressure during competitions—you don't often see that in someone her age. She's incredibly determined and always manages to pull off an impressive throw, even when things are tough. Her success totally comes from her pure grit and hard work, both when we're practicing and when she's on her own.”

Her goal in the upcoming AAU Junior Olympic meet in Houston, held July 28 through Aug. 2 is to make the podium in all three of her events - shot put, 400 meter dash, and 800 meter run. A big goal, but with her focus, competitiveness, and determination, she may just accomplish it.

Her toss of 29’ 4 ½” at the regional qualifier in Springfield, Missouri in June placed her at the top of AAU youth throwers for 2025.Riley’s work ethic is testament to her farming family, where all the children are also athletes on the Striders team. Brothers Logan and Jacob run and throw for the Hays Striders and will be members of the Hays High teams this coming school year. Riley is also a 4-H member and has enjoyed success there as well. Her bucket calves have won reserve champion and champion over the past several years.Riley’s shot put coach, Traci Vap, said “Riley's a really dedicated and driven person with an awesome attitude. She's super focused on her goals, and it shows. I've seen her make huge strides in understanding her technique and putting my coaching into action.”<figure>

In fact, her favorite event is the 400. “Riley is very, very competitive,” Strider coach Dave Haberman stated. “She trains without question and has really invested herself into our program. Her results reflect that.”Her pre-meet day meal is her favorite food - steak, with a homemade breakfast burrito the morning of competition. In preparation for a meet, she combines a series of warm-ups and stretches, and “lots of water.” Her regiment leaves no room for junk food, even when traveling, she added, but her favorite post-meet meal is “ice cream!”“When Riley first came to the Striders, she tried her hardest to keep up with the older athletes,” Haberman stated. “She would cut across the football field just to be able to run with the group.” Now, she is leading the pack for the girls and they are trying to keep up with her. She now sees herself as a mentor and role model for the younger girls on the team.Riley’s favorite subject in school is math and she plans to become a doctor, but not before accomplishing her dream of being an Olympic runner and thrower. Her future may include the pentathlon and heptathlon but she has some reservations about hurdles. “We have a really good hurdle coach in Brooklyn Pfeifer and I am sure she would get Riley up to speed on the hurdles,” Haberman said. “I think Riley could accomplish anything she set her mind to.”Vap, herself an All-American athlete at Pittsburg State University, added, “What really makes her stand out is how calm she stays under pressure during competitions—you don't often see that in someone her age. She's incredibly determined and always manages to pull off an impressive throw, even when things are tough. Her success totally comes from her pure grit and hard work, both when we're practicing and when she's on her own.”Her goal in the upcoming AAU Junior Olympic meet in Houston, held July 28 through Aug. 2 is to make the podium in all three of her events - shot put, 400 meter dash, and 800 meter run. A big goal, but with her focus, competitiveness, and determination, she may just accomplish it. Riley is the daughter of Landon and Lynn Leiker of Hays.

Bobby Witt Jr. and Freddy Fermin each hit two-run home runs for Kansas City.

Automatic runner Tyler Tolbert was picked off second base after Rave's walk. India's 413-foot drive to left center won it for the Royals. It was India’s fifth homer of the season.

Kyle Manzardo's bases-loaded RBI single in the top of the 10th gave the Guardians a 3-2 lead.

Steven Cruz (3-1) earned the win for Kansas City.

Maikel Garcia went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run, triple and a walk. Salvador Perez had a two-hit game with a double. Garcia's two-run homer in the fourth inning gave the Royals a 2-0 lead. It was his ninth homer of the season.

Bo Naylor drove in both of the runs for the Guardians with a sac fly in the fifth and an RBI double in the seventh.

Kansas City's Michael Wacha pitched 5 1-3 innings of one-run ball, allowing three hits with five strikeouts and one walk.

Gavin Williams gave up two runs and five hits in six innings with three strikeouts and two walks for the Royals.

The series opener on Friday game was postponed because of weather, which set up a split doubleheader on Saturday.

Missed opportunities in the later innings cost the Guardians. With two on and one out in the seventh, Brayan Rocchio attempted to score from first on Naylor’s RBI double, but was thrown out at home. Cleveland had runners on first and second with one out in the ninth and had the bases loaded in the 10th, but only scored once. The Guardians went 3-for-14 with runners in scoring position and left 10 runners on base.

– The Hays Larks raced out to an early lead then held off a late rally and
defeated the Seattle Blackfins 6-5 in their pool play opener at the 91st NBC World Series
Thursday afternoon at Eck Stadium.

The
Larks (29-4-1), who are the defending NBC World Series champions, made it look like it would be easy by racing out to a 6-1 lead. They scored a run in the first on a Wilbert Espinal RBI double then
added two in the second on Taber Stokes two-run homer to left, his fifth of the
season. 

After Seattle (17-16-2) scored a run in the third, the Larks struck for three in the
top of the fourth. Lane Sparks singled to open the
inning, stole second, advanced to third on a balk then stole home. Trent Baker
scored on an error then Lorenzo Rios singled, which drove in Jackson Babcock for a 6-1 lead.

The
Blackfins scored runs in the fifth and seventh on wild pitches to pull within 6-3. They scored two more in the eighth on a Brody
Blum home run to left. Nolan Wilson worked a perfect ninth for the Larks to
seal the win and picked up the save.

Lorenzo
Rios had three of the Larks 13 hits as the Larks extended their winning streak to 14 games and have won seven straight NBC World Series contests.&nbsp;Trent Baker had a double, two stolen bases, and two runs scored. The Larks showed off their speed with both Baker and Lane Sparks collecting two stolen bases, and two players hitting doubles. Taber Stokes also added a stolen base to go along with his homerun.

Brooks
Jones (2-0) allowed one run on one hit with five strikeouts and one walk over
three innings of relief and picked up the win. Starter Nick Gray allowed one
earned run on six hits with three strikeouts and two walks over four innings.
Adrian Najar gave up the two-run homer in the eighth. The four combined to
strike out 11 batters.

Dodge City A’s cruised to an 8-0 run-rule victory over the Seattle Cheney Studs
in seven innings in their opener earlier in the day.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/donald-trump">Donald Trump</a>&nbsp;on Thursday signed an executive order mandating that federal authorities clarify whether college athletes can be considered&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/ncaa-lawsuit-settlement-c5e0cea45fd210cc935cff992ab16f25">employees of the schools</a>&nbsp;they play for in an attempt to create clearer national standards in the NCAA’s name, image and likeness era.

Trump directed the secretary of labor and the National Labor Relations Board to clarify the status of collegiate athletes through guidance or rules “that will maximize the educational benefits and opportunities provided by higher education institutions through athletics.”&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2025/07/saving-college-sports/" target="_blank">The order</a>&nbsp;does not provide or suggest specifics on the controversial topic of college athlete employment.

The move comes after months of speculation about whether Trump will establish a college sports commission to tackle some of the thorny issues facing what is now a multibillion-dollar industry. He instead issued an order intended to add some controls to “an out-of-control, rudderless system in which competing university donors engage in bidding wars for the best players, who can change teams each season.”

 </figure>WASHINGTON (AP) — President&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/donald-trump">Donald Trump</a>&nbsp;on Thursday signed an executive order mandating that federal authorities clarify whether college athletes can be considered&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/ncaa-lawsuit-settlement-c5e0cea45fd210cc935cff992ab16f25">employees of the schools</a>&nbsp;they play for in an attempt to create clearer national standards in the NCAA’s name, image and likeness era.Trump directed the secretary of labor and the National Labor Relations Board to clarify the status of collegiate athletes through guidance or rules “that will maximize the educational benefits and opportunities provided by higher education institutions through athletics.”&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2025/07/saving-college-sports/" target="_blank">The order</a>&nbsp;does not provide or suggest specifics on the controversial topic of college athlete employment.The move comes after months of speculation about whether Trump will establish a college sports commission to tackle some of the thorny issues facing what is now a multibillion-dollar industry. The $2.8 billion&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/ncaa-settlement-b6ff58d62f93359789dde1626f827bf1">House settlement</a>&nbsp;shifts even more power to athletes, who have also won the ability to transfer from school to school without waiting to play.At Big Ten Conference football media days in Las Vegas, Purdue coach Barry Odom was asked about the Trump order.“We’ve gotten to the point where government is involved. Obviously, there’s belief it needs to be involved,” he said. “We’ll get it all worked out. The game’s been around for a hundred years and it’s going to be around 100 more.”The NCAA has been lobbying for several years for limited antitrust protection to keep some kind of control over this new landscape — and avoid more crippling lawsuits — but a handful of bills have gone nowhere in Congress. Still, some coaches have recently suggested&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/house-settlement-tennessee-athlete-bargaining-e6b2c2b30a693a1313d1f04be8d304e9">collective bargaining</a>&nbsp;as a potential solution to the chaos they see.It is a complicated topic: Universities would become responsible for paying wages, benefits, and workers’ compensation and schools and conferences have insisted they will fight any such move in court. While private institutions fall under the National Labor Relations Board, public universities must follow labor laws that vary from state to state and it’s worth noting that virtually every state in the South has “right to work” laws that present challenges for unions.Trump’s order also:— Calls for adding or at least preserving athletic scholarships and roster spots for non-revenue sports, which are those outside football and basketball. The House settlement allows for unlimited scholarships but does impose roster limits, leading to a complicated set of decisions for each program at each school that include potential concerns about Title IX equity rules.
