GARDEN CITY - Th TMP-Marian baseball team closed out the regular season with a pair of wins over Garden City Tuesday at Clint Lightner Field. The Monarchs take game one 11-5 then win the second contest 19-8.
The Monarchs finished the regular season with a 24-1 record and are the No. 1 seed for the 2-1A Regional and will host Pratt Skyline Thursday at 5 p.m.
Game 1: TMP-Marian 11, Garden City 5
The Monarchs scored nine runs over the final three innings to pull away.
Both teams scored a run in the first with the Monarchs coming on an error. TMP added a run in the top of the third on a Carson Liles groundout only to see the Buffaloes take advantage of an error and tie the game 2-2 with a run in the bottom of the inning.
TMP took the lead for good with four runs in the fifth. Ty Schmeidler drove in the first run on a ground out, Caden Dinkel, Jacob Seib and Connor Breit all drove in a run with a single.
The Monarchs pushed the lead to 9-2 with three in the sixth then got two more runs in the top of the seventh. Garden City scored three in the bottom of the seventh.
Logan Baalmann earned the win for TMP allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits with two strikeouts and two walks over 5 1/3 innings. Ian Nehls pitched the final 1 2/3 innings allowing three runs on four hits with one strikeout and no walks.
Game 2: TMP-Marian 19, Garden City 8 (5 innings)
Caden Dinkel and Ty Schmeidler both homered and drove in four runs.
After Garden City scored a run in the first, the Monarchs scored 10 runs in the top of the third inning and nine in the fourth. The Buffs answered with five in the third and two in the fourth.
Dinkel tied the game in the third with a bases loaded walk, Grand Nehls scored on a wild pitch to give TMP the lead. Jacob Seib added a run on a ground out, following back-to-back walks by Connor Breit and Trevor Fabrizuis, Ian Nehls had a two-run single. Carson Liles followed with a two-run double and eventually stole home. Schmeidler finished off the inning with a two-run homer.
TMP scores nine runs on seven hits an inning later. Breit got the scoring started with an RBI double, ne run, Fabrizius and Grant Nehls both had run-scoring singles, Schmeidler added a two-run single, Dinkel hit a three-run homer to right before Seib doubled to score the final run.
Dinkel picked up the win, allowing eight runs (five earned) on nine hits with four strikeouts and one walk over 3 1/3 innings. Grant Nehls pitched the final 1 2/3 innings with two strikeouts and no walks.
