WICHITA - The Hays Larks Hunter Rossen has been added to the NBC World Series All-America Team.

Rossen collected 12 hits, two of the home runs, two triples and four doubles in the Larks run to the title game.&nbsp;

NBC World Series director Kevin Jenks says Rossen's original omission was an oversight.

"We overlooked the accomplishments of Hunter Rosson of the
Hays Larks during the 2022 NBC World Series. He was a dynamic defensive weapon
at second base and in right field, but his offensive numbers were more
impressive."

Hunter Rosson has been added as an All-American utility
player. He joins teammates Brady Rose and Leo Jiminian who are also on the All-America team.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs wanted to get younger around quarterback Patrick Mahomes and the rest of their veteran core.

They couldn't have done it much better through the draft.

The Chiefs selected 10 players in April, their most in 14 years, and all but one made the final cutdown Tuesday for teams to reach the 53-man limit for the regular season. Some of them, such as first-rounders Trent McDuffie and George Karlaftis, were locks from the moment their names were read while others played their way onto a perennial Super Bowl contender.

That includes two seventh-round picks — the time of the draft when teams are typically throwing darts at the board in the hopes of landing a hidden gem. Defensive back Jaylen Watson and running back Isiah Pacheco made the team while safety Nazeeh Johnson, a candidate for the practice squad, was the lone draft pick to be cut.

McDuffie, who will start at cornerback, and Karlaftis, who could start at defensive end in the opener Sept. 11 at Arizona, join Watson in a young defense. Second-round pick Bryan Cook made the team at safety, third-round pick Leo Chenal carved out a role at linebacker and fourth-rounder Joshua Williams survived the cut at cornerback.

“Especially with the young guys, those guys — you can see the scheme is starting to click for them,” said linebacker Nick Bolton, the second-year pro who has taken over calling plays in the middle of the Kansas City defense.

“They're playing a whole lot faster. They're communicating well. Those young guys, they're doing a hell of a job,” Bolton said, “and the vets are just helping them. We have open communication with the young guys and they're doing their best.”

Wide receiver Skyy Moore, the Chiefs' other second-round pick, will be counted upon heavily to help overcome the loss of Tyreek Hill in the passing game. And the one rookie that appeared to be on the fence after a rough training camp, fifth-round pick Darian Kinnard, was kept around as a developmental backup on the offensive line.

Suddenly, a team that had grown old during a streak of six straight AFC West titles is among the youngest in the league.

“I've never gotten caught up in how young or how old guys are. As long as they can play, I'm good,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. "I like this group. I like the way they went about business up in St. Joseph (at training camp) and then down here, we didn't have a big letdown when we moved back, which can happen with the young guys.

“It's a tribute to the veteran guys and also the scouting department for bringing these guys in.”

The Chiefs did keep a couple of intriguing veterans on the roster.

Ronald Jones II was largely an afterthought throughout much of training camp, often working with the third-string offense in team drills. But after Derrick Gore was placed on injured reserve, Jones proceeded to run for 53 yards on just eight carries in the Chiefs' preseason finale against Green Bay, and that was enough to earn a spot on the roster.

“I thought RoJo did a nice job down the stretch,” Reid said. “We know what he's capable of. It's a matter of him being comfortable in the offense. It looked like he was starting to get it down the stretch. He's done a good job.”

The news on cutdown day wasn't as good for Josh Gordon, the once-elite wide receiver that has spent most of the past year trying to rebuild his career in Kansas City. Gordon was let go along with 2016 first-round pick WR Corey Coleman and special teams standout Daurice Fountain, though there's a chance he could be signed back to the practice squad.

The Chiefs can't replace Hill's explosive speed, but they did provide Mahomes with plenty of new playmakers to complement TE Travis Kelce. They signed JuJu Smith-Schuster away from Pittsburgh and Marquez Valdes-Scantling away from Green Bay and used a second-round pick on Skyy Moore of Western Michigan.

“We’re going to be different,” Mahomes said, "but I think we’ll still be able to go out there and have a ton of success.”

Maybe, but it's not going to be easy for the Chiefs to host a fifth consecutive AFC championship game. Aside from playing in the toughest division in football, where all four teams have legitimate playoff aspirations, the Chiefs also face the AFC South and NFC West along with the Bills, Buccaneers and Bengals.

Nobody has had more passing yards, completions and TD throws in his first two years in the NFL than Herbert, and he could take a big leap in production this season now that he's grown more comfortable in the Chargers offense.

“He’s just a lot looser than usual. He’s just a lot more comfortable. When you come in year one, kind of shy, don’t want to talk a lot,” wide receiver Mike Williams said. “But now, he’s taken control and been himself.”

The Chargers' significant defensive upgrades can only help Herbert's burgeoning confidence.

“I’m really excited for this team. I think we are miles ahead of where we were at this point last year,” said Herbert, who threw for a franchise-record 5,014 yards and had nine 300-yard passing games last season.

Wilson is the Broncos' 11th starting quarterback since Peyton Manning retired, and the new transplant has huddled aplenty with the Hall of Famer who still lives in Denver and was a frequent visitor at training camp.

"We've been talking a lot,” Wilson said. “Since I’ve gotten here, he’s kind of taken me under his wing in a beautiful way. (Peyton’s wife) Ashley (Manning) has taken ‘Ci’ (Ciara) under her wing in helping with thoughts, schools, this, that and where to eat.

“The thing that Peyton and I both love is football. We can spend all day watching football together,” Wilson added. “It’s fun to be able to be around arguably the world’s greatest who has ever played the game at that position.”

And one who's been through what Wilson is about to experience.

McDaniels gets his second chance as a head coach in the same division where he flamed out in less than two seasons with the Broncos more than a decade ago.

“I feel like I’ve learned a lot,” said McDaniels. “I feel like it’s slowed down for me for sure."

A notoriously creative play-caller, McDaniels gets to direct an offense that features an established QB and one of the game's best pass-catching trios. Adams has averaged 108 catches since 2018, TE Darren Waller is one of the best at his position and slot WR Hunter Renfrow had 103 receptions for 1,038 yards last season.

🎾 HHS freshman fare well in Scott City

HAYS -&nbsp;The Hays High girls’ golf team easily won their first tournament of the season, taking their own Hays High Invitational by 67 strokes Monday afternoon at the Smoky Hill Country Club. 

The Indians shot a 323. Dodge City finished a distant second with a 390.

Hays placed six in the top-10 lead by Jaycee Oakley who won the individual title with a 6-over-par 75. Abbie Norris finished third with an 81, Katie Dinkel fourth with an 83 and Lily Garrison fifth with an 84. 

Mikayla Rome led three TMP-Marian golfers with a 95 and placed 11th.

Hays is at the Salina Central Invitational on Tuesday, September 5th.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Fort Hays State men's soccer team fell to UC-Colorado Springs on Sunday by a score of 2-0. The Mountain Lions scored twice in the first thirty minutes of the match and played tight defense to keep the Tigers from any hope of a comeback. The No. 7 ranked Tigers fall to 1-1, while the Mountain Lions improve to 1-0-1.

UC-Colorado Springs jumped ahead early, finding the net in the 17th&nbsp;minute on a sharp strike from Lars Walczyk. Ten minutes later, the Mountain Lions scored again off a loose ball in the box struck by Jack Souder. The Mountain Lions outshot the Tigers 11-3 in the first half and put four on target.

The Tigers recorded only three more shots in the second half and were unable to place any shots on goal throughout the contest. UCCS won the shot battle 19-6 overall and were able to put seven on target. FHSU keeper&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6644">Kieran Brown</a>&nbsp;tallied five saves in the match.

The Tigers return to action next week when they face Rockhurst at home on Thursday (Sep. 1). They will travel back to the west to take on MSU Denver on Sunday (Sep. 4).

Manny Machado homered twice and drove in four runs for San Diego, which had won four of six. Juan Soto also connected for his third homer with the Padres, and Josh Bell added an RBI single in the ninth.

The Padres were unable to overcome a shaky performance by Sean Manaea (7-7), who was tagged for six runs and 10 hits in four innings.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The FHSU women's soccer team wrapped up their season-opening road trip to South Dakota with a 1-1 draw against Augustana on Sunday. Each squad scored in the first half. The Tigers moved to 1-0-1 on the year and the Vikings open their season 0-0-1.

Augustana jumped on the board early as a shot from the top of the box found its way past a diving&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6693">Isabel Robben</a>&nbsp;in the fifth minute. Still, he went into the final tune-up determined to stand out in case he finds himself looking for work.

Agim forced two fumbles and broke up two passes in the Broncos' 23-13 preseason win over the Minnesota Vikings on Saturday night, and his best play, a strip-sack of Sean Mannion, led to Baron Browning's&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/Broncos/status/1563714587060408321?s=20&amp;t=ZS1pPiK_yYFfQsOtQ4v3sA">17-yard fumble return</a>&nbsp;for a touchdown just before halftime.

“That was my mind-set,” Agim said, “just put the best film out there so all 31 other teams see it, as well.”

They'll be impressed, but it won't matter. Agim isn't going anywhere.

Both teams rested their starters in the preseason finale, and none of the four backup quarterbacks threw a touchdown.

Browning, whom the Broncos (2-1) moved from inside linebacker to the edge this year, stunted up the middle and nearly pried the ball from Mannion's grasp himself as he swept past him in the final minute of the first half.

Agim was right there to slap the ball out as he wrapped up Mannion from behind for a 10-yard sack. Browning reached back, grabbed the ball with his right hand and zipped into the end zone to give Denver a 17-7 lead.

“That was a killer," Vikings rookie head coach Kevin O'Connell said. "Sean’s trying to get ready check the ball down. We coach real hard to have two hands on it in the pocket.”

Mannion got the Vikings, who went winless in the preseason, to midfield for Greg Joseph's 46-yard field goal as time expired, cutting Minnesota's deficit to 17-10 at halftime.

Joseph's 58-yarder five seconds into the fourth quarter made it 17-13 and the Vikings were driving again when safety rookie safety Dalarrin Turner-Yell returned from a concussion check to sack Kellen Mond on fourth-and-goal from the Denver 5.

Brandon McManus capped the scoring with a pair of field goals over the final 3:19.

With Kirk Cousins sitting out again, Mannion was 9-of-16 for 121 yards and Mond went 10 for 17 for 102 yards in the second half.

Like Cousins, Russell Wilson didn't play at all in the preseason. Brett Rypien was 14 for 21 for 137 yards in the first half and Josh Johnson threw for 107 yards on 11-of-14 passing.

Wilson dressed out in full pads and even put on his eye black to watch the action from the sideline with Denver's other resting starters were decked out in street clothes.

He also had a headset and a microphone to listen to rookie head coach Nathaniel Hackett calling the offensive plays and consulting with offensive coordinator Justin Outten.

“So, he got to hear how I talked to the coaches and how I call plays,” said Hackett, whose first real-game experience with Wilson will be in the opener at Seattle.

Rypien drove the Broncos to the Minnesota 8 on Denver's opening possession but his throw over the middle to K.J. Hamler on first-and-goal was tipped by Myles Dorn and intercepted by Luiji Vilain.

Johnson drove Denver on a pair of drives that ended in field goals. McManus' 40-yarder made it 20-13 with 3:19 remaining.

That's when Denver's defense, which collected five sacks, showed up again.

Rookie Nik Bonnito recorded consecutive sacks of Mond, Agim batted down his fourth-and-27 pass with 2:07 remaining, and Denver took over at the Vikings 8. McManus added a 31-yard field goal in the waning seconds.

Minnesota's first touchdown came on Bryant Koback's carry on fourth-and-goal from the 1. Officials initially ruled he was stuffed by Turner-Yell but the Vikings won the challenge, giving them a 7-3 lead.

Montrell Washington's 11-yard TD on a reverse gave Denver the lead for good at 10-7.

The Broncos have been dreadful on special teams for several years and things didn't look much different Saturday night as returner Jalen Virgil muffed the opening kickoff, knocking the ball out of bounds at the 2.

In the third quarter, Broncos snapper Jacob Bobenmoyer inexplicably carried the ball several yards across the goal line for a touchback that left punter Sam Martin perplexed as to why he didn't just down the ball inside the 10.

Vikings: DL T.Y. McGill Jr. (ankle) and LB Troy Dye (foot) both were injured in the first quarter and didn't return. WR Jalen Nailor was ruled out with a concussion early in the third quarter. WR Bisi Johnson left shortly thereafter with what O'Connell feared was a serious knee injury.

🏈 Browning's fumble return TD helps Broncos beat Vikings

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Wil Myers hit a two-run homer against his former team, Yu Darvish recovered from a rocky start and the San Diego Padres beat the Kansas City Royals 4-3 on Saturday night.

After falling behind 3-0 in the first inning, the Padres took the lead in the third and held on. Myers connected in the second, and San Diego went ahead on RBI singles by Manny Machado and Brandon Drury an inning later.

Darvish (11-7) allowed three runs and five hits in seven innings. He struck out six and walked two. The right-hander has lasted at least six innings in 22 of his 24 starts, most in the National League.

“After the first inning I was just thinking if I could get through five it'd be a good night,” Darvish said. “Somehow I managed to get to seven innings, so all in all I think it was a good outing.”

Robert Suarez worked the eighth and Nick Martinez got three outs for his sixth save.

Kansas City scored three times in the first on Nick Pratto’s two-run double and an RBI single by Hunter Dozier.

“We scored the three early, but we left some money on the table in the first and a missed opportunity in the second, those come back to haunt you," Royals manager Mike Matheny said. "You have to get greedy early in the game to put teams, or pitchers, like this away.”

After that, Darvish locked in. He retired 13 in a row and 17 of 18, and had a four-pitch inning in the fifth.

“I think most starters are pretty vulnerable early in the game before they can get into a rhythm,” Padres manager Bob Melvin said. “He hasn't pitched in a while and he has so many pitches that sometimes he needs to streamline and see which ones are working.”

Myers hit a two-run shot 428 feet into the fountains in right field off Daniel Lynch in the second, scoring Josh Bell. Kansas City traded Myers and others in 2012 to Tampa Bay for Wade Davis and James Shields.

The homer was the only extra-base hit by San Diego in the game.

“I have definitely been working towards right field, but haven’t had a ton of success with that,” Myers said. “But over the last two games it’s started to turn around a little bit.”

The Padres took the lead in the next inning. Machado hit an RBI single that scored Jose Azocar, and Drury knocked in Juan Soto.

"This was a big one to finish out after scoring a couple times in the third," Melvin said. “Not only was Yu good, but got a few clean innings (from the bullpen).”

Lynch (4-9) tied a career high by allowing nine hits over five innings. He gave up four earned runs, walked one and struck out six.

The Tigers scored the first three points of the second set and cruised to a 25-17 win.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6836">Gracie Rains</a>&nbsp;put down a team-best five kills, part of 13 as a team within the set. Tinder added seven digs in the frame, moving into double digits for the match. Rains remained hot in the third set by adding seven more kills to help the Tigers to a 25-20 third set win and sweep of the match. Tinder remained steady on offense throughout the contest and finished with nine kills after putting down three in each set. She nearly had a double-double for the match after finishing with a team-best 16 digs for the match. Daffer was the only other Tiger to reach double figures in digs with 12 as the team finished with 51 opposed to just 32 by the Griffins. The Tigers grew stronger offensively as the match progressed. They hit just .100 as a team in the first set, but followed with a .222 clip in the second and .333 in the third. They produced 17 kills in the third set and finished with a .214 hitting percentage overall, while limiting Westminster to just a .178 mark.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6666">Mykah Eshbaugh</a>&nbsp;was errorless for the match with seven kills on 16 attempts (.438) and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6665">Emily Ellis</a>&nbsp;hit .385 with six kills and just one error on 13 attempts.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6668">Elysia Glowacz</a>&nbsp;had 21 assists and Felix added 14. Fort Hays State 3, Southwest Baptist 0 (25-16, 25-14, 25-17) After the first set went back and forth seeing the score tied a few times to the point of 11-11. The Tigers worked their way in front to a 14-11 lead and then eventually used a 5-0 run to build a 21-14 lead. Southwest Baptist committed four straight attacking errors to allow the Tigers to take control. FHSU went on to win the set 25-16.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6838">Caiya Stucky</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6836">Gracie Rains</a>, and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6674">Riley Tinder</a>&nbsp;all had three kills in the set and helped the team hit .303 in the opening frame. The Tigers started the second set on fire by scoring the first seven points, all on a service rally by Tinder. However, the Bearcats made a burst of their own with a 6-0 run to get back within one at 9-8. But the trend of big runs continued as the Tigers went on another 7-0 run to push their lead to 16-8. The lead eventually reached 11 at 23-14 and the Tigers went on to win the set by that margin, 25-14. Rains had four kills in the set, while&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6666">Mykah Eshbaugh</a>&nbsp;and Tinder each put down three. The Tigers were a smidge more efficient than their first set, hitting .355 in the second frame and holding SBU to a -.026 mark. SBU was hitting .000 for the match at that point with 19 kills and 19 errors. The Tigers went on to complete their second straight three-set sweep on Saturday by winning the third set 25-17. Another 7-0 burst in the latter stages of the set helped put the match away. Rains put down six kills in the set, while Tinder added four. Rains finished with a team-high 13 overall and hit a blistering .500 for the match with just two errors. Tinder also reached double figures with 10, while being just one dig short of a double-double with nine. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6668">Elysia Glowacz</a>&nbsp;distributed 20 assists for the Tigers, followed by&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6667">Jaida Felix</a>&nbsp;with 10.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6664">Jaden Daffer</a>&nbsp;had a team-high 10 digs, followed by&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6835">Brooke Hyland</a>&nbsp;with eight. Eshbaugh finished the day errorless as she put down five kills on 15 attempts. She also had a team-best six blocks in the match, followed by&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6663">Morgan Christiansen</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6665">Emily Ellis</a>&nbsp;in that category, each with five. The Tigers hit .260 as a team in the match, their best effort so far this season. They kept the Bearcats right on that .000 hitting percentage (28 kills, 28 errors), also a best against an opponent so far this season. The Tigers will play four more matches next weekend at the Denton Volleyfest in Denton, Texas. FHSU will face three Great American Conference teams and one Lone Star Conference team in that tournament.&nbsp;&nbsp;

HAYS - Olathe West and Beloit each finished pool play undefeated to
earn the number one seeds into the championship bracket of Saturday's Maroon and Gold Invitational hosted by Hays High School. 

Beloit defeated Hays
20 and 17, Salina South 15 and 20, and Scott City 14 and 11. West bested Colby
9 and 13, TMP 8 and 11, while defeated Maize South in three sets 25-17, 27-29,
25-14. 

Maize South, ranked 4th in the preseason 5A poll, and Salina South grabbed the other two spots in the Championship Bracket by finishing
second play in each pool at 2-1.

Olathe West won the first set of the championship match
25-15. The Owls took a five point win the second set 25-20 to claim the
championship over Maize South.

Beloit, ranked 4th in the preseason 3A poll, trailed most of the opening set of the third-place match against Salina South
but rallied for a 25-23. The Trojans built an early lead in the second set and
led the entire way for a 25-14 victory, claiming third place.

Hays and TMP each finished third in the pools at 1-2. Hays
defeated Scott City, falling to Beloit and Salina South. TMP topped Colby and
lost to Olathe West and Maize South.

They would meet up in the fifth-place match at the end of
the day after wins in the first round of the Consolation Bracket. The Indians
beat Colby 17 and 16. The Monarchs knocked off Colby 13 and 15.

Hays won the first set against the Monarchs 25-20 then climbed out of a deficit
in the second set to grab the lead at 20-19, eventually taking the win 25-19.

The 7th place matchup was won by Colby. It was the
Eagles first win of the day. Scott City finished 0-5.

Hays returns to action September 6th when the
Indians host a triangular.
