EMPORIA, Kan. - A team title, six individual champions, five national qualifying marks and numerous personal-bests highlighted the 2023 Midwest Classic for the Fort Hays State track and field teams on Sunday (April 23).
The Tiger women placed first as a team, racking up 137 team points, more than 40 more than second place. The men finished fourth as a team with 74 points, just five behind second place.
Lyric Holman competed in three events and won all three times. The Junction City, Kan. senior ran a national-qualifying time of 55.74 in the 400m dash, finishing first on the day and ranking her second at FHSU during the DII era in the race. She also won the 200m dash with a time of 24.25 and won the 4x100m relay alongside Jasey Downing, Kinley Brown and Tori Poe with a time of 47.37.
A trio of the top 10 performances in DII history in the 400m dash came in that same race, with Reba Mader finishing fourth in 57.78 and Brown placing fifth with a time of 57.82. The pair rank ninth and 10th, respectively, on the FHSU DI era performance chart.
Mattie Rossi was second in the 100m hurdles with a national-qualifying time of 14.19, her top wind-legal mark of the season. Chloe Stanley was close behind in third with a personal-best 14.40, while Taylor Savolt placed fourth in the same race with a time of 14.62. Savolt later ran the 400m hurdles in a national-qualifying time of 1:01.74.
Addie Berens recorded the fourth national-qualifying mark for the Tiger women, winning the javelin throw competition with a top heave of 145-6. She took home first place by nearly 14 feet, with each of her top five throws surpassing the top throw of the second-place finisher.
Elizabeth Fender captured the final event victory for the Tiger women, winning the 5,000m run with an outdoor personal-best time of 18:22.15.
Faith Little (2:16.84) and Hannah Wiebe (2:17.11) etched their name in ninth and 10th, respectively, on the FHSU DII era performance chart in the 800m run, finishing seventh and eighth on the day.
Liberty Booker was ninth in the hammer throw, recording a top toss of 157-8 to move into 10th on the FHSU DII era list. Annabeth Baalmann (10-11.75) was third and Kaitlin Lindstrom (10-6) was fourth in the pole vault, while Poe finished third in the 100m dash (12.41) and fourth in the 200m dash (25.10).
In the men's competition, Hayden Albright secured a national-qualifying time of 47.76 in the 400m dash. It was a personal-best time that ranks the Kingman, Kan. junior sixth on the FHSU DII era performance list.
Trever Medina was the lone Tiger champion on the men's side, winning the 1,500m run with a personal-best time of 3:49.55. He now sits in second place at FHSU during the DII era, while Aaron Mangan is third on the list with his time of 3:50.31 from Sunday.
Nolan Churchman completed the 400m hurdles in 53.67, finishing sixth on the day and good for second on the FHSU DII era performance chart. He was ninth in the 110m hurdles after crossing the line in 15.28.
Ethan Salmans, meanwhile, was third in the shorter of the two hurdles races, completing the 110m hurdles in 14.83 to rank ninth on the FHSU DII era list. He later finished 11th in the 400m hurdles competition with a time of 56.67.
Jaret Pfizenmaier turned in a fourth-place finish in the 5,000m run, completing the race in 14:52.97, seventh-best at FHSU during the DII era.
Brady Deges (14-1.25) was second in the pole vault and Kolgan Ohl (182-7) was second in the hammer throw, while Kaden Wren (1:54.09) finished fourth in the 800m run.
The Tigers are next scheduled to return to action on Friday (April 28) when they host the FHSU Alex Francis Classic. FHSU will then travel to Jefferson City, Mo. for the 2023 MIAA Outdoor Championships May 5-7.
