KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs picked a hometown boy with the last selection in the first round of the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/nfl-draft-football-2023-d45256e5f5eb6f6de7b24b65a2996e9c">hometown NFL draft</a>.

The Super Bowl champions bolstered their pass rush Thursday night when they chose Kansas State's Felix Anudike-Uzomah with the 31st overall pick. He was born in Kansas City and became a prep star in the suburb of Lee's Summit, Missouri, before helping the Wildcats to a Big 12 title last season, when he was voted&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/college-football-sports-texas-christian-horned-frogs-sonny-dykes-felix-anudike-0f094630441f8c5e8f752cb5dae1a45c">the league's defensive player of the year</a>.

“I got drafted by literally my favorite team growing up,” Anudike-Uzomah said. “It's definitly a dream come true.”

Anudike-Uzomah fills a big need for the Chiefs, who&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/chiefs-frank-clark-orlando-brown-super-bowl-02ba7e989e9d38be31afed964f1fda48">released Frank Clark</a>&nbsp;not long ago to create some salary cap space.

The Chiefs also used a first-round pick last year on&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-city-chiefs-nfl-sports-athens-st-joseph-a92f5ef25723916b5644e4e9379f7265">defensive end George Karlaftis</a>, and now they have two young players to anchor their pass rush for years to come. Karlaftis had six sacks while helping the Chiefs win the Super Bowl as a rookie.

“Felix is a heck of a player. He’s also a KC native, so we appreciate that part of it, too,” coach Andy Reid said. “When you’re picking right there at 31, you take the best player available. He was that guy.”

“It’s one thing to get drafted in the NFL," Chiefs general manager Brett Veach added. "To have a local kid get that call on draft night, while the draft is being held in Kansas City, needless to say he was pretty excited.”

Kansas City had been in the spotlight all night before the Chiefs made their pick. The draft was being held for the first time at historic Union Station, where the largest stage complex in its history was erected near the National World War I Museum.

Thousands of fans began arriving nearly 12 hours before Carolina went on the clock with the first pick, and 125,000 packed the area by the time the Chiefs made their pick. And while jerseys representing almost every NFL team were in the crowd, the vast majority were Chiefs jereys that formed a rollicking sea of red as fans awaited their selection.

Earlier in the night, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and tight end Travis Kelce had greeted fans by bringing out their latest Lombardi Trophy. But for their selection, two finely dressed gentleman brought out their other two Lombardi trophies before Chiefs owner Clark Hunt carried out the third one and the champions finally made their pick.

At that point, it was anyone’s guess what Veach might do.

The Chiefs were long linked to wide receivers in the first round after losing JuJu Smith-Schuster and Mecole Hardman in free agency, and signing Richie James as the only noteworthy replacement. But beginning with Jaxon Smith-Njigba to the Seahawks at No. 20, four wide receivers were selected in a row, and that left the Chiefs without one with a first-round grade.

Then there was the offensive line, where the Chiefs declined to use the franchise tag on left tackle Orlando Brown Jr. for a second consecutive year and allowed Andrew Wylie to leave as well. The Chiefs signed Jawaan Taylor with the intention of moving him from right tackle to left tackle, but they are still searching for help at the other end of the line.

Oklahoma’s Anton Harrison was a potential fit but he went four spots earlier to Jacksonville.

The other big hole was at defensive end, where the Chiefs signed Charles Omenihu to play alongside Karlaftis but still needed a long-term solution. Nolan Smith would have been an option, but the Georgia standout’s long slide ended when the Eagles — who lost to Kansas City in the Super Bowl — selected him one pick before the Chiefs went on the clock.

So, they pivoted to another pass-rushing option.

Anudike-Uzomah was considered a fringe first-round pick, but the Chiefs saw enough value in him to make the selection, rather than trade out of Round 1 altogether. Anudike-Uzomah joins a group of pass rushers that also includes Mike Danna and Malik Herring, but where there will be ample opportunity to make an immediate impact.

The Chiefs still have nine more draft picks, including second- and third-rounders on Friday night.

“We did have some calls (on trading down),” Veach acknowledged. “You know, it’s a situation where you have a guy that’s clearly the top guy left, and the calls we had, you’re talking mid-40s, that’s a long ways away. So we thought, ‘Let’s not get cute here. There’s a guy we like. Let’s go ahead and make the pick.’ And we're glad we did.”

🏈 Chiefs pick hometown star Felix Anudike-Uzomah of K-State

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Byron Buxton and Carlos Correa homered back-to-back for the Minnesota Twins, who routed the Kansas City Royals 7-1 on Thursday.

Buxton and Correa teed off on Royals veteran right-hander Zack Greinke in the fourth inning. Buxton’s opposite-field shot was a three-run blast over the high wall in right-center field to make it 6-1. Correa followed that up with a line-drive homer into the bullpens in left-center.

Twins starter Tyler Mahle allowed one run — a solo homer by Vinnie Pasquantino in the top of the fourth — but exited after four innings and 66 pitches with right posterior elbow soreness.

Mahle didn't sound too worried after the game, calling it “just inflammation,” but said he didn't know yet whether he'd make his next start.

"No one's really concerned about it," he said. “So just sit back for a few days and let it calm down and it should be fine.”

Reliever Brock Stewart (1-0), who was recalled from Triple-A Rochester on Tuesday, made his Twins debut in replacing Mahle. He pitched two scoreless innings and struck out three batters.

“The guys that have watched him throw at the Triple-A level have been very, very pleased,” manager Rocco Baldelli said. “He's been pretty dominant. He's throwing the ball great.”

Minnesota has now homered in 10 straight games, with a total of 17 during that stretch.

The 39-year-old Greinke fell to 0-4 on the season and his ERA jumped to 6.10 after allowing seven runs on eight hits over 3 2/3 innings. Greinke hasn’t beaten the Twins since April 30, 2014, a span of nine starts. He also is now 1-8 in 11 career starts at Target Field.

“It was unusual. It seemed like a little bit of a lack of command,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said of Greinke. “The pitch count was elevated. It just didn't seem like he was commanding it as well as he normally does.”

Minnesota scored a run in the first when Trevor Larnach singled to drive in Correa. The Twins plated two more runs in the second off Greinke.

Pasquantino's home run extended his on-base streak to 21 games, tying his career high.

“He seems to do a really good job of compartmentalizing," Quatraro said of Pasquantino. “He leaves the last at-bat behind him, whether it was good or bad, and goes up there and competes on every pitch.”

Minnesota's bullpen combined for five scoreless innings, allowing just one hit. Then Twins closer Jhoan Duran pitched the ninth inning despite a six-run lead.

Baldelli said Duran has an early-morning flight Friday to take care of immigration-related documents, so Minnesota opted to pitch him Thursday to save other relievers for Friday's game.

Before Thursday’s game, the Twins reinstated left-hander Josh Winder from the 15-day injured list and optioned left-hander Brent Headrick to Triple-A St. Paul to make room for Winder on the roster.

Winder has not yet appeared for the Twins this season after missing time with a right shoulder strain. He made five rehab appearances before being reinstated, striking out 11 and walking four in nine innings.

Headrick appeared in three games for the Twins and posted a 3.24 ERA.

Royals: Catcher Salvador Perez remained out of the lineup after getting hit by a pitch Tuesday. Quatraro said Perez has a “bad bruise” but underwent pregame activities.

Twins: Right-hander Kenta Maeda had an MRI on his right elbow, which showed a muscle strain and inflammation. Maeda, who exited Wednesday’s game with an elbow injury after allowing 10 runs in three innings, did not have any structural damage to his elbow. He’ll likely land on the injured list.

RHP Jordan Lyles (0-4, 4.88 ERA) gets the start Friday for Kansas City, while RHP Pablo López (1-2, 3.00) starts for Minnesota. Lyles faced the Twins in his first start of the season, allowing two runs in 5 1/3 innings in a 2-0 loss. Lopez was on the other side of Lyles in that game against the Royals and allowed just two hits in 5 1/3 shutout innings to earn the win.

to Tonganoxie in their first game then lost 7-2 to Paola in game two at the
Creekside Baseball Park.

HHS has lost five
straight and dropped to 7-6. They will play St. Mary’s Academy in the seventh
place game at 10:00 a.m. Friday at Legends Field in Kansas City. Kan. The
Crusaders lost 15-3 to Bonner Springs then 15-2 to Basehor-Linwood in their two
games Thursday.

The Chieftains (10-5) scored three runs in the third and four in the fourth to
break open a one-run game. They then put the game away with two in the sixth

lone run on a passed ball in the third inning. Cooper Sanders had two of Hays
High’s three hits.

Nolan Dreher allowed
four runs (three earned) on seven hits with one strikeout and two walks over
three innings and suffered the loss.

4A) Paola 7, (#7, 5A) Hays 2 
Hays struck first with a run in the top of the first on a Greg Hughes single
which scored Cooper Sanders. They scored their second run in the seventh thanks
to two errors.

The Panthers took the
lead with three runs in the bottom of the fourth then added two in the fifth
and sixth.

HHS was held to three
singles and struck out 15 times.

Carson Spray allowed
five runs on six hits with seven strikeouts and six walks and suffered the
loss.

⚾ Indians lose twice at Bonner Springs Tournament

HAYS – The Hays High softball
team snapped TMP-Marian’s eight-game winning streak with a doubleheader sweep Thursday
at the Bickle-Schmidt Sports Complex. The Indians held on to win game one 11-10
then took game two 10-0.

HHS has now won
six-straight and nine of their last 10 and improved to 10-3. The Monarchs are
now 11-5.

Game 1: Hays
11, TMP-Marian 10 
TMP-Marian scored four runs in the top of the first inning, the Indians
answered with five in the bottom of the first. They then added two in the
second along with single runs in the third and fourth. The Monarchs got a run
in the sixth then five in the top of the sixth but were retired in order in the
seventh.

Dezarae Schmidt and
Ellie Dreiling both had three of the Indians 13 hits. Schmidt had two doubles.
Morgen Berry also had a double and drove in two runs. Riley Dreher had two RBIs
and picked up the complete game victory in the circle. The sophomore allowed five
earned runs on 12 hits with three strikeouts and one walk.

Brooke Koeningsman led
the Monarchs with two home runs, a double and four RBIs. She hit a solo homer

⛳ FHSU's Rader earns spot on All-MIAA team

KANSAS CITY, Mo.&nbsp;– The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association announced its postseason awards and All-MIAA team for the 2022-23 men’s golf season on Thursday. Missouri Southern State’s Tradgon McCrae was named the MIAA Golfer of the Year.

McCrae&nbsp;finished at the top of the 2022-23 MIAA Designated Standings to be crowned the Golfer of the Year. The senior from Plainville, Kan. who golfed at Hays High School competed in three of the Association’s four designated events and placed in the top-five in each of them. McCrae captured the individual title at the 24th Annual NSU Golf Classic, tied for fifth at the Broncho Invitational and was the runner-up at the 2023 MIAA Championship. He led the Lions to a MIAA regular season, a MIAA tournament title and leads all MIAA golfers with a season average of 71.7.

As a team, the Tigers finished 11th at Eagle Creek Golf Club, a par-72, 5,800-yard layout. Brasser opened the week with an 8-over 80 on Monday in a round that featured the only eagle of the day. She sat in a tie for 13th after the opening 18 holes, seven back of first place. The Andale, Kan. native turned things around and fired a 2-over 74 in round two, good for the second-best round of the day. She entered the final round in a tie for fifth place, still seven back of the leader. The three-time All-MIAA selection then finished the week with the low round of the tournament, carding three birdies and three bogeys to turn in an even-par 72. The result vaulted her into third place at 10-over 226, two shots back of the ultimate champion. Brasser played nine of the 54 holes in under par, tied for second-most in the field. She carded eight birdies to go along with her first-round eagle. She had finished inside the top 10 at each of the last two MIAA Championships, but this is her first top-five finish at the league meet.

Shauna Lee was also in a tie for 13th following the opening round, with the sophomore firing a round of 8-over 80 on Monday. She followed that up with rounds of 81 and 84 in rounds two and three, finishing in 27th place at 29-over 245.

Aliyah North&nbsp;turned in rounds of 87, 78 and 89 to finish at 38-over 254, good for 35th place, while Lexi Rider finished 51st (63-over 279) after rounds of 90, 92 and 92. The Tigers were in ninth after round one and in eighth place following round two, but slipped two spots to finish the week in 10th place. Central Missouri (72-over 936) held on down the stretch to take the team title, defeating Rogers State (75-over 939) by three shots. Northwest Missouri State's Paige Hoffman took the individual title at 8-over 224 after rounds of 73, 74 and 77. The Tigers will see if any of their players are selected for competition in the Central Super Regional when the full field is released on Monday.&nbsp;&nbsp;

⛳ Brasser third, Tigers 10th at MIAA Championships

PHOENIX (AP) — Manager Torey Lovullo admitted the Arizona Diamondbacks might have had a little hangover on Wednesday following a frustrating one-run loss.

Sending Zac Gallen to the mound cleared those bad feelings up in a hurry.

Gallen struck out 12 over 6 1/3 innings and stretched his scoreless streak to 28 innings, leading the Diamondbacks over the Kansas City Royals 2-0.

“It's always nice knowing Zac is stepping on the mound for us,” Lovullo said. “He sets an unbelieveable tone for us, goes 6 1/3, no runs, allows us to get ahead and stay ahead.”

Arizona took two of three games from the Royals and finished a 3-4 homestand.

Gallen (4-1) gave up four hits and walked none. He struck out six straight batters in the fourth and fifth innings, one shy of the franchise record accomplished by Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling, both in 2001.

The right-hander — who finished fifth in the NL Cy Young Award voting last season — hasn't given up a run since April 4 against San Diego. He's no stranger to long scoreless streaks as the D-backs just celebrated his 44 1/3 inning scoreless streak from 2022 with a bobblehead giveaway last weekend.

“Would you believe me if I said I didn't feel great?” Gallen said. “You know the cliché saying — you have your best stuff maybe five times (in a season), so the other 20 times, you've got to make it up.”

Even without his best stuff, Gallen's only minor trouble came in the first inning when Vinnie Pasquantino and MJ Melendez singled with one out. Gallen struck out Edward Olivares and Michael Massey to end the threat.

Miguel Castro handled the eighth and Andrew Chafin threw the ninth for his fourth save in five chances. The first two Royals batters reached base on Chafin, but the lefty retired the next three, including Freddy Fermin on a strikeout to end the game.

Arizona has pitched four shutouts. Kansas City has been blanked six times.

Royals manager Matt Quatraro said Gallen's ability to throw four pitches for strikes in any count makes him a tough matchup. Pasquantino said Gallen “does what a lot of people try to do and he does it really well.”

The mini-basketball program in the Otis-Bison school district uses the
high school students to help teach the game of basketball to younger children.
Scott Goodheart remembers helping with the program, and very few people wanted
to referee the youth games so he always got stuck refereeing. That high
school assignment has turned into 17 years as a registered official and
recently being named the Director of Officials for the Kansas State High School
Activities Association. 
“With having a father that officiated and I didn’t play sports after high
school, officiating was a good transition for me to give back to the game,”
said Goodheart. 
Goodheart recalls his first varsity game as an official in Spearville, Kansas
against Greensburg (Kiowa County). 
“I bet if I were to go back and watch that game, I probably wasn’t very good,”
joked Goodheart. “Some people would probably argue that I’m not very good now.”

Goodheart has officiated volleyball, softball and basketball over the years and
has been the league commissioner for the Heart of the Plains League since 2016.
The Kansas State University graduate has spent the last few years being an
unofficial “spokesperson” for referees and working to mentor and recruit
officials in Kansas. 
“With this Director of Officials position through KSHSAA, it’s a lot of stuff I’ve
been doing before but now I get to put more focus on it being a fulltime job,”
said Goodheart. “Like I tell all officials, we’re the best recruiters for
officials. We need to be supporting these individuals.” 
Goodheart noted statistics show if referees stick around after their 
third
year, they are likely to work as an official for a long time. As 
KSHSAA's Director of Officials, Goodheart will be in charge of 
recruiting, mentoring,
training and retaining referees. The 2022-2023 school year was the first
 year
KSHSAA implemented the position. 
“The director of officials position is something surrounding states have done,
and now Kansas is getting the ball going with it,” said Goodheart. “States and
associations realize there is an importance for it. They see there is a need
because of the shortage of officials.” 
Goodheart believes promoting officiating to students in colleges across the
state is a good place to start the recruitment process and preaches the importance
of community support. 
“We want to show these kids that there is not a better way to make money on the
side as a part-time gig in college,” said Goodheart. “The other thing is
finding those employers that will give their employees the flexibility in allowing
people to officiate. Officiating is a community service. If there are no
officials for games, those kids aren’t playing games.” 
Goodheart was named the National Federation of State High School Associations
Boys Basketball Official of the Year in 2014, but reminds everyone that you do
not have to be an award-winning official to get started. 
“I kicked the biggest call of my life in Lyons, Kansas one night,” said
Goodheart. “There was a play that was a clear block, but I blew my whistle and had
my fist closed. I kicked the call, but we’re human and officials are going to
miss calls. That’s the beauty of officiating…it’s kind of an art how
you deal with it but it also uses your intelligence of the game.” 
Goodheart and his family will relocate to the Topeka area this summer, and he will officially
begin his KSHSAA position in July but will stay busy prior to that date with
officiating clinics and conferences.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Goodheart: From refereeing Otis-Bison youth to KS director of officials

PHOENIX (AP) — Scott Barlow got Christian Walker to hit into a game-ending groundout with runners on second and third, and the Kansas City Royals beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-4 on Tuesday night for just their second win in 11 games.

Brady Singer (2-2) rebounded from three poor starts and the Royals tied their season high with 14 hits. Every starter except Franmil Reyes had at least one hit for the Royals. Kansas City is 6-18, including 5-6 on the road but just 1-12 at Kauffman Stadium.

Corbin Carroll was a home run shy of the cycle for Arizona and stole two bases.

After allowing 18 runs over 16 innings in his prior three outings, Singer gave up one run and five hits in six innings and lowered his ERA from 8.14 to 6.67.

“I don't know if I've gotten through a first inning cleanly this year,” Singer said. "I wanted to set the tone early.

“The slider was the difference. (There was) a lot better late break to that pitch. The changeup was really productive too.”

“Really encouraging, obviously nice outing for him but also for the team," Royals manager Matt Quatraro said of Singer. "Those guys present a lot of challenges with their lineup, so I was really happy for him.”

Kansas City opened a 5-2 lead on Anthony Misiewicz's run-scoring wild pitch in the eighth, but Arizona closed in the bottom half on Emmanuel Rivera's two-run single off Aroldis Chapman. Rivera moved to second on Bobby Witt Jr.'s throwing error, but Barlow relieved and struck out Gabriel Moreno and Alek Thomas.

“He came in there in a huge spot and got those two strikeouts,” Matt Quatraro said.

Geraldo Perdomo doubled leading off the ninth and took third on a groundout. Carroll walked with two outs and stole second, and Barlow retired Walker for his third save.

Ryne Nelson (1-1) gave up four runs and 11 hits in five innings.

“He was in a little bit of a fistfight all day,” Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said. “He was battling the command of his (offspeed pitches); I thought he got into a good rhythm with his fastball.

“We had some opportunities and hit some balls hard, just had nothing to show for it.”

Edward Olivares hit an RBI single in the first and Nicky Lopez doubled the lead with a run-scoring single in the fourth. Walker had an RBI groundout in the bottom half, but Kansas City opened a 4-1 lead in the fifth when Michael Massey hit a run-scoring single and Reyes followed with a sacrifice fly.

Josh Rojas' sacrifice fly cut Arizona's deficit to 4-2 in the seventh.

Rivera was called up because OF Jake McCarthy was optioned to Triple-A Reno by Arizona after Monday’s game. McCarthy was batting .143 in 22 games after hitting .283 with 23 stolen bases as a rookie last year. “Things just weren’t trending in a positive direction,” Lovullo said.

Royals: C MJ Melendez (lower back tightness) is “feeling better,” according to manager Matt Quatraro. Melendez left Sunday’s game against Toronto and sat out Monday. ... Quatraro aid LHP Daniel Lynch (rotator cuff strain) had a good bullpen session in nearby Surprise and could make a rehab start in a week.

Diamondbacks: Walker (forearm) returned to the starting lineup after making a pinch hitting appearance Monday.

⚾ Barlow strands two in 9th, Royals beat D-backs for 6th win

GREAT BEND - The TMP-Marian baseball team was held to four hits and committed 12 errors and was swept by Great Bend Tuesday at the Great Bend Sports Complex. The Monarchs dropped the opener 14-1 then lost the second contest 4-2. 

TMP is now 3-7 on the season. They are scheduled to host Russell in a doubleheader on Friday.

Game 1: Great Bend 14, TMP-Marian 1 (5 innings) The Panthers scored early and often in the five inning run-rule victory. Two errors and a walk led to three runs in the first. They added four in the second, two in the third and five in the fourth.

TNP scored their only run in the third on a Carson Liles single. Liles finished with two of the Monarchs four hits.

Drew Werth allowed two earned runs on five hits over two innings and took the loss.

Game 2: Great Bend 4, TMP-Marian 2 Three Panther pitchers combined to no-hit the Monarchs.

Great Bend scored a run in the fourth then added two in the fifth to complete the doubleheader sweep.

The Panthers took advantage of a leadoff error and scored a run in the first. The Monarchs tied the game with a run in the top of the second. Ian Nehls was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning then eventually scored on an error.

⚾ Monarchs swept in Great Bend

&nbsp;JOPLIN -&nbsp;Fort Hays State junior Morgan Brasser shot a 2-over-par 72 on Tuesday and moved into a fifth-place tie after two rounds of the MIAA Women’s Golf Championships at the Eagle Creek Golf Club in Joplin. 

After an opening round 80 on Monday, Brasser sits at 10-over-par in the tournament and is seven shots back of Northwest Missouri State’s Paige Hoffman who leads at plus-3. Brasser is four shots behind Central Missouri's Nicole Rallo who is in second place after a low round of 73 on Tuesday.

The third and final round is on Wednesday.

The Fort Hays State men’s basketball team appears to have filled a big need, literally. The Tigers announcing on Twitter the signing of 6-10 center Petar Asceric.&nbsp;

The Serbia native played this past season at Concord Academy in North Carolina and averaged eight points and 6.5 rebounds per game.

Asceric joins Southwest Baptist transfer guard RJ Crawford who announced his commitment last week.

🏀 Tigers get big man commitment

HAYS, Kan. - Fort Hays State Softball will begin its weekend pursuit of an MIAA Tournament berth a day later than originally scheduled. Forecasted weather has pushed this week's home doubleheaders against Rogers State and Northeastern State back a day to Saturday and Sunday (Apr. 29-30). Start time of the doubleheaders both days will be at 12 p.m. Live stream and stats will be available for both doubleheaders. Sunday will be Senior Day at Fleharty Family Field. Fort Hays State is in the middle of a chase for a berth in the 2023 MIAA Softball Championship Tournament in Topeka next week. Four teams have mathematically locked up a spot in the eight-team tournament, while eight other teams (including Fort Hays State) will battle this weekend for the other four spots. FHSU is currently in sixth place in the MIAA standings at 11-11 and holds an overall mark of 29-20.&nbsp;&nbsp;

🥎 FHSU home doubleheaders pushed back to Saturday and Sunday

When Rick Ball moved to Great Bend in 1974 he was looking for a good way to exercise. Living close by, he eventually joined the golf
club, which has been known for years as Stoneridge Country Club. 

Along with
other investors, Ball eventually spent time in ownership of the 18-hole golf
course located on the northeast side of Great Bend on 24th Street. Although Stoneridge has had multiple owners since Ball and other investors sold the course in 2007, they “carried”
a financial note with the business.


The previous ownership failed to make mortgage payments for years, and after a
long, drawn-out court proceeding the new Club at Stoneridge owners took over ownership of the course last
December. Currently closed, Ball is now looking at what it will take to reopen
a once well-kept golf course. "It's going to take the involvement of former and new members; I'm not going to be able to do it by myself," said Ball. "We'll get others involved as soon as we get our arms around what all needs to be done." 
Ball said the court proceeding to foreclose on the course
dragged on for nearly two years.

There are over 120 acres throughout the golf course which has not been watered recently and has weeds taking over sections.
Ball noted the course needs to be addressed first but felt
like the clubhouse is also essential to make the venture successful. The clubhouse
features a bar and restaurant with a large kitchen, multiple banquet and
conference rooms, golf shop and a fitness room. Conversations have taken place with City of Great Bend officials on whether or not
the city wanted to get involved with the property to make the club into
a partial public course. Ball said he is open to continue those
conversations. "It would be nice to have the city involved somewhat," said Ball. "I'm a private businessman so I like to do things private, but there is a place for the city to participate also. If we don't go forward, I would consider this a negative for Great Bend if there is not a golf course for people to play. It helps bring businesses and people to town."

At the time, Ball does not have plans to keep or maintain the swimming pool at the
country club.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

"There are people that have offered to step up and help financially to get it done," said Ball. "We'll welcome that if we make the final decision to go forward."

PHOENIX (AP) — Nick Ahmed took a healthy swing in the eighth inning, but was a little off on his timing. The ball squirted off the end of his bat, rolling slowly up the first base line.

That gave Christian Walker time to sprint home with the decisive run for Arizona.

It was far from a classic, but these are the kind of games the Diamondbacks have lost for years. Now a few of them — including Monday night's 5-4 victory over the Kansas City Royals — are starting to go their way.

“We're not going to score 10 every game or throw a no-hitter,” Walker said. “So to win these tweeners, where we feel we have a chance to win, but it's a matter of executing and holding them off one more inning, for me, these are the games when you look back and you're proud of the season, these are the wins that need to happen.”
