🏐 FHSU splits final non-conference action

DETROIT (AP) — Kyle Isbel hit his first grand slam, Bobby Witt Jr. added a three-run home run and the Kansas City Royals routed the Detroit Tigers 12-2 on Saturday night.

Nick Pratto and MJ Melendez also homered for the Royals. It's the first time since at least 1906 that four first-year players on the same team have homered in the same game.

“We're young, but it's a really good group of guys,” Isbel said. “We're excited for the future and we're just going to keep getting better and getting after it every day.”

Nate Eaton had four hits and drove in two runs. Every player in the Kansas City lineup had at least one hit.

“It was a relentless offensive day,” manager Mike Matheny said. “The guys kept taking good at-bats inning after inning.”

Winning pitcher Jonathan Heasley (3-7) gave up two earned runs and eight hits, with two walks and two strikeouts in seven innings.

Isbel, a 25-year-old outfielder, hit his grand slam over the wall in right field off Jason Foley in the fifth to give the Royals a 9-1 lead. The slam was Isbel's fourth homer of the season and fifth of his two-year major league career.

“I hit it hard enough and it was high enough; I was just hoping it would stay fair,” he said.

Tucker Barnhart hit his first home run of the season for Detroit. Tigers starter Michael Pineda (2-7) allowed five runs and six hits with three strikeouts and two walks in four innings.

“They did a nice job offensively, but it starts with bad pitches,” manager A.J. Hinch said.

Pratto gave Kansas City a 1-0 lead with his two-out homer in the first. The Tigers tied it in the second on Ryan Kreidler's sacrifice fly, his first career RBI. Kreidler later added his first two major-league hits in his second career game.

Witt's homer gave the Royals a 4-1 lead in the third. Melendez added an RBI single in the fifth to give Kansas City a four-run advantage.

“It's a lot of fun seeing everyone contributing,” Witt said.

Royals rookie shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. reached the 20-20 mark for home runs and stolen bases. He's the fifth first-year player in major league history to accomplish the feat and fifth Kansas City player to have a 20-20 season.

“I'm guessing it might be the last one you see because it will be in the 30s after this,” manager Mike Matheny said. “That's the kind of player he is. He's special.”

Witt Jr. had 33 homers and 29 stolen bases in the minor leagues last season.

“It's always a goal. I was a stolen base short last year of 30-30," he said. “It would be cool to do that in the big leagues.”

Royals: 1B Vinnie Pasquantino (right shoulder discomfort) began a rehab assignment on Saturday with Triple-A Omaha. Pasquantino has been out of action since Aug. 22. ... C Salvador Perez (right hand contusion) was not in the lineup. He was hit by a pitch on Friday.

Tigers: DH Miguel Cabrera (biceps soreness) did not play and will be placed on the injured list, manager A.J. Hinch said after the game. However, it is not necessarily a season-ending injury. ... 2B Jonathan Schoop (right ankle sprain) began a rehab assignment with Single A West Michigan on Saturday. Schoop was injured on Aug. 20.

Royals: RHP Max Castillo (0-1, 2.81 ERA) will make his second start of the season for Kansas City on Sunday. Castillo, who has made 12 minor league starts this season, held Tampa Bay to one run in five innings in his Royals debut on Aug. 18.

Tigers: RHP Matt Manning (1-2, 3.79 ERA) will try to bounce back from his worst outing this season. Manning surrendered seven runs in 2 1/3 innings to Seattle on Tuesday. He pitched six scoreless innings against San Francisco in his previous start.

UNDATED (AP) — Kansas State begins a season of high expectations against South Dakota on Saturday before facing Missouri next week in a showdown against an ex-Big 12 rival. 

South Dakota took the Wildcats to the wire in their last meeting in 2018. Kansas State will lean on Nebraska transfer quarterback Adrian Martinez and returning running back Deuce Vaughn. 

Vaughn is a preseason All-America all-purpose player who had nearly 2,000 yards total offense last season. 

The Coyotes have arguably the toughest schedule in the Football Championship Subdivision with four games against preseason top-10 teams following the trip to Manhattan.

🏈 High expectations for Kansas State

The TMP-Marian Monarchs had to wait out a more than one-hour
long weather delay and then shake off a slow start on their way to a 26-13 week
one win over the Oakley Plainsmen Friday night in Oakley.

The game was delayed until 8:15 due to a storm that moved
into the Oakley area while the two teams were warming up.

The Monarchs failed to get anything going in the first two
offense possessions. The first drive came to end on a fumble and the second ended
in a punt.

Oakley turned the ball over on downs on their first
offensive possession and then the TMP defense forced the Plainsmen into a three-and-out.

The Monarchs were finally able to get on the board in the
second quarter, capping off a 10-play drive that covered 66 yards, capped off
with a two-yard touchdown run for Peyton Schwartz, his first career rushing
touchdown putting TMP 6-0.

After another Oakley three-and-out TMP strung together a
seven-play 53 yard drive that was finished off on a 15 yard Kade Harris
touchdown run giving TMP a 13-0 lead.

Oakley threatened to score at the end of the first half but
TMP was able to keep the Plainsmen off the board.

After a scoreless third quarter Oakley scored their first
touchdown of the game, taking advantage of a pass interference and face mask
penalty on the Monarchs that kept the drive alive. Will Schmidt scored from a yard
out to make it 13-6 TMP.

The Monarchs answered right back with a three play 57 yard
drive that saw Griffin Schumacher score his first rushing touchdown of the
season with the extra point putting TMP up 20-6. 

Five minutes later the Monarchs added a second touchdown run
for Schwartz, another two-yard run, giving TMP a 26-6 lead with just over five
and a half minutes remaining. 

Oakley added one more score with less than four minutes left
but TMP was able to secure the 26-13 victory and open the season 1-0 for the
second year in-a-row.

The Monarchs amassed more than 300 total yards of offense,
all on the ground. Harris finished with 146 yards on 20 carries. 

TMP will host the Ellis Railer Friday night in the Battle of
Big Creek at Lewis Field Stadium in Hays.

TMP was able to keep the Plainsmen off the board.After a scoreless third quarter Oakley scored their first
touchdown of the game, taking advantage of a pass interference and face mask
penalty on the Monarchs that kept the drive alive. Will Schmidt scored from a yard
out to make it 13-6 TMP.The Monarchs answered right back with a three play 57 yard
drive that saw Griffin Schumacher score his first rushing touchdown of the
season with the extra point putting TMP up 20-6. Five minutes later the Monarchs added a second touchdown run
for Schwartz, another two-yard run, giving TMP a 26-6 lead with just over five
and a half minutes remaining. Oakley added one more score with less than four minutes left
but TMP was able to secure the 26-13 victory and open the season 1-0 for the

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — There have been plenty of years that Kansas has struggled to beat teams from the Football Championship Subdivision to open the season, and second-year coach Lance Leipold is keenly aware of that fact.

Maybe that's why he didn't mince words when it came to assessing a 56-10 romp over Tennessee Tech on Friday night.

“You play who is on the schedule and you go from there. It's a game we should win by that margin and we did that," Leipold said. “We know this program hasn't had enough wins to be overly critical of how it plays out.”

There wasn't much to be critical about against the Golden Eagles.

Jalon Daniels threw for 182 yards with touchdowns on the ground and through the air before giving way to backup Jason Bean, who added a TD run of his own. Devin Neal took a handoff 80 yards for a score and finished with 108 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Nebraska transfer Sevion Morrison and Daniel Hishaw also reached the end zone.

Kansas even got a 61-yard TD return by Jacobee Bryant off a blocked field goal that set the tone early.

“We've talked about just gaining confidence and this team hasn't had a lot of that,” said Leipold, whose team piled up 297 yards rushing and 502 total yards. “This is definitely a step in the right direction.”

The Jayhawks' revamped defense was just as good: Golden Eagles starter Jeremiah Oatsvall was just 10-of-18 passing for 76 yards with a TD and an interception. The Jayhawks held Tennessee Tech to 93 yards rushing on 43 carries.

“I told our guys, ‘We played the best football team were going to play all year,’ ” Golden Eagles coach Dewayne Alexander said. “There were some things we’ll show big improvement from Week 1 to Week 2, but our guys did fight.”

After more than a decade of just about everything going wrong, the Jayhawks must have felt good about a first half — albeit against a lower-level opponent — in which just about everything went right.

Daniels connected on 14 of 15 passes for 182 yards, scoring on an 11-yard second-quarter run before passing to Mason Fairchild for a 2-yard score. Three different Jayhawks reached the end zone on the ground. And when Bryant scooped up that blocked field goal late in the first quarter and returned it 61 yards for a score, Kansas had its first such touchdown since Patrick Brown did it against Oklahoma in 1996.

Perhaps more importantly, the Jayhawks' rebuilt defense shut down the Golden Eagles.

Kansas forced a three-and-out on Tennessee Tech's first two possessions, then blocked the field goal on the next. And after Tennessee Tech finally converted a field goal to make it 21-3, the Jayhawks forced two more three-and-outs.

The second half wasn't nearly as clean for Kansas. Daniels nearly fumbled the ball away on their first possession before Jacob Borcila missed a 40-yard field-goal try, then the Jayhawks' quarterback threw a pick on his very next snap.

But the Golden Eagles missed a chip-shot field-goal attempt of their own, and on the Jayhawks' next offensive play, Neal split the defense over the right side and ran untouched 80 yards for the score.

“We executed at a high level,” Neal said. “We obviously made mistakes. I won't ever be satisfied. But where we are compared to last year, it's night and day.”

🏐 Tigers split day one in Texas

HAYS - The 2022 football season for Hays High opened by hosting the Junction City Blue Jays at Lewis Field Stadium.

Junction City jumped out to a 14-0 lead early in the second quarter after the Indians had taken their first drive of the season down to the three yard line but failed to score.

The Blue Jays first scored on a tipped pass on 4th and 23 then a 52 yard pass on 3rd and 6. Hays responded back with a Kyrese Groen pass to Johnny Cano for 21 yards on 3rd and 6 to close the gap to 14-7.

Junction City scored with just 1:56 left before halftime to regain a two score lead at 21-7. Hays though stole some momentum back with a Groen five yard run with :17 left and closing the gap down to 21-14 at halftime.

The Hays defense did not allow a single score in the second half on five Junction City drives. The Blue Jays could not convert on fourth down three times in the half.

Hays got three Malik Bah touchdown runs of 57, 16 and 46 yards. The second scoring run gave the Indians the lead for the first time while the final score finalized the victory.

Bah ran for 273 yards and three scores on 31 carries. Groen rushed for 154 on 23 carries including one touchdown. Groen threw for another 105 yards, one score to Johnny Cano and one interception.

The Indians outgained Junction City 544 to 322.

Hays improves to 1-0 and will travel to Great Bend next week. Junction City is 0-1 and is home to Dodge City in seven days.

DETROIT (AP) — Ryan Kreidler scored twice in his major league debut, including the go-ahead run on pinch-hitter Harold Castro's seventh-inning single, and the Detroit Tigers edged the Kansas City Royals 5-4 on Friday night.

“Super fun,” said Kreidler, who was promoted from Triple-A Toledo on Thursday. “Got the nerves out somewhat. I think I'll still be nervous tomorrow and the next day, but it's all good.”

Batting ninth, Kreidler drew two walks. He lined out in his first at-bat and struck out in his last trip to the plate.

“I was ready to swing at every pitch,” he said. “My last at-bat showed that. I swung at a lot of pitches. But I was just trying to get them in the zone and try to treat it like another game.

"I wouldn't be crazy aggressive in any other game in the minors, so I'm just going to try to be the same person up here that I was down there.”

Javier Baez hit a two-run homer and Willi Castro had three hits, including a solo homer. Detroit snapped a three-game losing streak.

Andrew Chafin (1-2) got the win with 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. Gregory Soto struck out the side in the ninth for his 24th save.

Michael A. Taylor hit a two-run homer for the Royals, who have dropped three straight. Carlos Hernandez (0-4) took the loss.

Tigers starter Drew Hutchison gave up four runs, three earned, and six hits in 5 2/3 innings. Royals starter Daniel Lynch allowed four runs and five hits in five innings.

Kansas City scored a pair of two-out runs in the second. Kyle Isbel had an RBI single and Riley Greene's error while trying to retrieve the ball allowed another run to come home.

Detroit scored four runs in the fifth. Castro hit his solo homer with one out. Victor Reyes drove in the second run with a sacrifice fly before Baez launched his 12th homer on a full count.

Baez had gone 17 games without a homer. It was just his second since the beginning of August.

“It felt weird because I hadn't hit a homer in two months,” Baez said. “I was working on my hitting before the game. I was moving my arms too much.”

Taylor's ninth homer in the sixth tied it at 4.

Harold Castro poked his two-out single to left to drive in Kreidler in the seventh.

“Seventh inning, we have the leadoff walk and it comes back to bite us,” Royals manager Mike Matheny said. “In a close game like that, the free bases are what's going to be the deciding factor.”

Royals: RHP Daniel Mengden was designated for assignment and RHP Wyatt Mills was recalled from Triple-A Omaha. Mengden started for Kansas City on Thursday and gave up three runs in 2 2/3 innings against the Chicago White Sox. Mills is 0-1 with a 5.30 ERA in 18 relief appearances with Kansas City this season.

Royals: 1B Vinnie Pasquantino (right shoulder discomfort) took batting practice in Detroit on Friday. Pasquantino, who has been out since Aug. 22, is eligible to come off the injured list. ... &nbsp; MARYVILLE, Mo. – Fort Hays State took a 12-7 lead in the second quarter, but No. 2/4 ranked Northwest Missouri State scored 26 unanswered points to build a 33-12 lead and beat the Tigers 33-19 Thursday night in the 2022 season opener at Bearcat Stadium. Chance Fuller&nbsp;moved to the top of the career passing yards list in FHSU history and found All-America tight end&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6704">Hunter Budke</a>&nbsp;for a pair of touchdowns in the game.

The Tigers made a few too many key mistakes a team cannot make against a top-10 ranked team early on, which allowed the Bearcats to cash in on golden opportunities and extend the current best home field win streak in NCAA Division II to 13 games. The Tigers were starting to gain momentum on the first drive of the night, but a fumble turned the ball over to the Bearcats at the FHSU 42. A couple of Tiger penalties shortened the field even more and the Bearcats scored the first touchdown of the night a few moments later.

The Tigers shook off the first few mistakes and put together a 65-yard drive that resulted in a 29-yard&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6858">Emanuel Aguilar</a>&nbsp;field goal. The Tigers shut down the next Bearcat drive and trailed 7-3 at the end of the first quarter. The Tigers then marched another 52 yards to set up a 47-yard field goal by Aguilar, pulling within one point of the Bearcats.

The Tiger defense stood tall once again forcing the Bearcats to punt and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6760">Alex Schremmer</a>&nbsp;nearly took his return back for a touchdown, finally tackled at the NWMSU 11 after a 55-yard return. That set up the first of two touchdown connections between Fuller and Budke, a 10-yard strike to put the Tigers on top 12-7 with 8:01 remaining before halftime.

The Bearcats had to settle for a field goal on their ensuing drive and FHSU still held control at 12-10, but then a sack and a short punt gave NWMSU just a 31-yard field to work with. The Bearcats capitalized and a touchdown put them back into the lead at 17-12 with 1:28 to go in the second quarter. Then another untimely fumble at the end of an electric 52-yard kick return gave the Bearcats the ball again. They went down and tacked on a field goal just before halftime, taking a 20-12 lead to the locker room.

The Bearcats used that late first-half momentum throughout the third quarter to tack on two touchdowns and take control of the game 33-12. Fuller found Budke for the second touchdown strike, another 10-yarder, early in the fourth quarter. The Tiger defense held the Bearcats in check primarily throughout the fourth quarter, but the offense came up a bit short on opportunities to cut into the lead further. Fuller finished the night with 309 passing yards, completing 36-of-61 attempts. He now leads the all-time passing yards list at FHSU with 7,876, going past the old mark of 7,682 set by his predecessor Jacob Mezera in 2018. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6753">Manny Ramsey</a>&nbsp;finished with a team-high 90 receiving yards, while&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6776">Trevor Watts</a>&nbsp;caught 10 balls for 88 yards. Defensively,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6792">Makel Williams</a>&nbsp;had a team-best seven tackles in his first contest as a Tiger, while 2021 team tackle leader&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6746">Myles Menges</a>&nbsp;added six. Northwest Missouri State produced 148 of its 396 yards in the game in the third quarter. Neither Bearcat quarterback finished with more than 100 passing yards and Kevin Dominique had a team-best 86 rushing yards. Isaac Vollstedt led the Bearcats in tackles with nine, while adding one sack. Zach Howard had three sacks in the game for the Bearcats. Fort Hays State looks to bounce back in its home opener on Thursday night (Sept. 8) against Missouri Western. The Griffons will enter at 1-0 on the year after a 35-0 win over Central Oklahoma.

CHICAGO (AP) — Andrew Vaughn and A.J. Pollock each cracked a two-run homer and singled, and the Chicago White Sox beat the Kansas City Royals 7-1 on Thursday.

Leury Garcia and Elvis Andrus added two hits and an RBI apiece for the White Sox, who won their second straight following a five-game slide to climb back within a game of .500 (65-66).

Chicago improved to 2-1 under bench coach Miguel Cairo, who is filling in as manager while Tony La Russa is on indefinite leave to undergo tests for an unspecified health issue.

The defending AL Central champions, who began the day five games behind first-place Cleveland, held a players-only meeting before the game. Chicago is seeking its third straight playoff appearance.

“It's no secret, you know, we haven't played really good baseball this year,” said Pollock, who went deep for the second straight game. “We've underperformed and I feel like there's been times where we put a lot into it and it hasn't worked out and it's been really deflating.

“But at the same time, we're got to keep showing up. We've got to keep pushing and pushing. We know we've got the group. We know we've got the players that can make that run. I mean, we can't wait. This is it.”

The White Sox have 31 games left, starting with a three-game home series against second-place Minnesota.

Many of Chicago's big offensive names have been injured or just fizzled during much of 2022. But the White Sox were a little pluckier at the plate in three games against Kansas City, hitting seven homers and taking 11 walks.

“They're not chasing bad pitches,” Cairo said. "And when they see it's right, they're swinging.

“If we hit the ball in the strike zone, be careful with this offense. This offense is dangerous.”

Johnny Cueto (7-6) allowed one run on six hits in 5 1/3 innings, walking none and striking out five. The 36-year-old right-hander rebounded from a rough outing last Friday when he allowed seven runs in five innings to Arizona.

Five Chicago relievers combined to throw two-hit ball the rest of the way.

“Today we played hard,” Cueto said through a translator. “Right now, we're playing with excitement and hype. I think the team really has chemistry right now and we just need to go running on that.”

Vaughn’s homer was his 15th, matching his total last year as a rookie. Chicago is 4-10 since reaching a season-high five games above .500 on Aug 16.

Kansas City rookie infielder Michael Massey had a double in his first three-hit game. The 24-year-old, who made hit major league debut on July 13, finished 3-for-3 with a walk.

Massey, from Chicago's southwest suburbs, grew up a White Sox fan and had friends and family in the stands for the series.

Fellow Royals rookie Drew Waters had a single and double for his third multi-hit game in nine since making his debut on Aug. 22. The 23-year-old right fielder also made a leaping catch against the wall on Pollock’s drive to end the second.

Daniel Mengden (0-1) yielded three runs on five hits in 2 2/3 innings in his fifth appearance and first start for the Royals this season. The righty was recalled from Triple-A Omaha before the game.

Kansas City jumped ahead 1-0 in the third. Waters scored from third when M.J. Melendez grounded into a forceout at second.

Chicago came back with three in the bottom half. Andrus drove in a run with a single and Vaughn followed with a deep drive to left on the Mengden’s first pitch to him.

Filling in for the injured Yoán Moncada at third, Garcia made a running catch with his back to the infield on Ryan O’Hearn’s pop down the left field line in the top of the sixth.

The White Sox upped their lead to 5-1 in the sixth on RBI singles from Garcia and Romy Gonzalez. Pollock went deep in the eighth.

Both teams added players as rosters expanded to 28 for September

The Royals selected Mengden and recalled OF Nate Eaton from Triple-A Omaha. The White Sox recalled RHP Matt Foster and OF Adam Haseley from Triple-A-Charlotte.

🎾 HHS girls win home invitational

HAYS, Kan. - Fort Hays State played to a 1-1 draw with Rockhurst on Thursday. Each team netted a goal in the first half nearly a minute apart, but neither could cash in opportunities in the second half. The No. 7 ranked Tigers moved to 1-1-1 on the year and the Hawks picked up their second straight tie, now 0-0-2.

The Tigers found the net first as a corner kick from Inigo Jimenez was expertly headed in by Callum Frogson in the 14th minute for his second goal of the season. The Hawks answered quickly as a foul inside the box lined Kaden Cripe up for a penalty kick that squeaked into the bottom right of the goal in the 15th minute. The Hawks outshot the Tigers 8-4 in the first half.

Overall the Tigers tallied seven shots and put a pair on target, while Rockhurst managed 12 shots placing five on goal. FHSU keeper Kieran Brown added two saves to his season total compared to one by Andrea Dorella of Rockhurst.

The Tigers will travel west to take on MSU Denver on Sunday (Sept. 4) as they begin a four-game road swing. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. CT/1:30 p.m. MT.

The men's squad, meanwhile, placed second out of 15 teams after placing five runners in the top 15. The men accumulated 50 points amongst the top five finishers, just two shy of first place Northwest Kansas Tech. HUTCHINSON, Kan. - The Fort Hays State women's cross country team came away victorious at the Terry Masterson Twilight Classic Thursday evening (Sept. 1), with&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=7040">Gretchen Kuffel</a>&nbsp;winning the race by nearly 20 seconds. The men's squad, meanwhile, placed second out of 15 teams after placing five runners in the top 15. The women's squad totaled 21 points in the team standings, with all five scorers placing in the top seven five out of 142 finishers. The men accumulated 50 points amongst the top five finishers, just two shy of first place Northwest Kansas Tech. Kuffel was the first across the line in the three-mile race with a time of 17:39.1, just under 20 seconds faster than second place. Sophomore transfer&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6990">Regan Hodsden</a>&nbsp;was third in her Tiger debut, traversing the course in 18:14.6.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=7114">Jaycee Vath</a>&nbsp;was close behind in fourth with a time of 18:18.8, while&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6976">Darian Hudgeons</a>&nbsp;(18:39.6) and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=7064">Elizabeth Fender</a>&nbsp;(18:45.0) rounded out the Tiger scoring in sixth and seventh, respectively. 🏃Women Victorious, Men Second in Cross Country Season Debut

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Kansas added an additional year to football coach Lance Leipold's contract Thursday that will keep him on the sideline through the 2027 season, a reward for a two-win first year that raised hopes for a long-awaited turnaround.

Leipold was hired last year, shortly after the Jayhawks parted with Les Miles following a winless season and amid sexual harassment allegations from his time at LSU. And despite never having an opportunity to put together a full recruiting class or working with his team in spring football, Leipold's progress was evident in a late-season upset of Texas.

Leipold's original contract was a $16.5 million, six-year pact that paid him $2.2 million in its initial season with annual $200,000 increases. He also would earn $50,000 for finishing in the Top 25, earning Big 12 coach of the year or winning seven regular-season games; $75,000 for reaching a certain academic benchmark; $100,000 for qualifying for a bowl game; and $500,000 if the Jayhawks would play for a national title.

“This is a statement about our exceptional confidence in Lance, his outstanding staff and the unlimited potential of Kansas football,” said Jayhawks athletic director Travis Goff, who was hired shortly before he chose Leipold as his coach.

“When you consider he and his staff did not arrive until May (2021), and therefore did not have a chance to coach our guys until August last year, the 2021 season could be considered ‘Year 0,’" Goff explained. “Given the progress that’s been made both on and off the field in such short order, I could not feel more strongly about the trajectory of this program.”

Kansas opens this season Friday night against Tennessee Tech.

He won six Division III national championships in eight seasons at Wisconsin-Whitewater, then proved he could win at the Division I level when he spent three years rebuilding Buffalo, followed by three straight bowl games.Along with upsetting the Longhorns last season, the Jayhawks put a scare into Oklahoma and lost one-possession games to TCU and West Virginia — further evidence that the culture Leipold was trying to build had taken root.Earlier this week, Leipold showed his affinity for the Jayhawks by announcing an endowment fund established along with his wife to provide financial support for an on-field graduate assistant for the football program.“It shows, I think, our commitment and our appreciation,” Leipold said. “We're going to need a lot from everybody and you have to do it yourself sometimes. We've tried to do certain things at each stop because we think it's important. The timing of the year, that didn't play a part in our thought process at all. We're just happy we could do it.”
