LIBERAL - The Hays High girls' soccer team extended their win streak to five straight matches with a 6-0 win at Liberal Thursday.

The Indians jumped out early with four first half goals.

Dani Willeford scored first at the 10 minute mark on an assist from Katie Dinkel. Kinslee Newell forced an own goal with her cross at the 25th minute. Karlee Crispein pushed the lead to 3-0 with a goal in the 32nd minute then Sienna Lummus scored off a pass from Ava Biggs in the 37th minute.

Crispin added a second goal in the 61st minute then Willeford closed out the scoring on a penalty kick in the 76th minute.

Hays High is now 8-2 overall and 4-1 in the Western Athletic Conference. They host Great Bend on Monday.

⚽ HHS blanks Liberal for fifth straight win

HAYS - The Hays High softball team completed the season sweep of Great Bend. After an 8-1 win in Great Bend Tuesday, the Indians won 11-1 and 5-0 Thursday at the Bickle-Schmidt Sports Complex.

HHS extend their winning streak to four games and is now 8-3 overall and 8-1 in the Western Athletic Conference. They host TMP-Marian on Thursday, April 27.

Game 1: Hays 11, Great Bend 1 (5 innings) The Indians scored nine runs in the bottom of the second inning to take control. Their first 10 batters all reached safely.

Riley Dreher allowed one unearned run on four hits and picked up the complete game victory.

Morgen Berry went 2-for-3 and drove in two runs. Aubree Thomas also had two hits including a triple and drove in three.

Game 2: Hays 5, Great Bend 0 Hays scored four runs in the fifth to break open a one-run game. Elle Dreiling, Morgen Berry, Avery Solida all drive in runs in the frame.

Riley Dreher has two of the Indians six hits and drives in a run. Solida finished with two RBIs.

Aubree Thomas scattered seven hits with seven strikeouts and three walks for the complete game win.

Both receive the honor based off athletic accomplishments and dedication to strength and training, nominated for the award by Fort Hays State Strength and Conditioning Coach Doug Boucher. Heimerman completed his fourth year playing football for the Tigers in 2022. Though he battled injury issues the last two years of his career, he collected an All-MIAA Honorable Mention selection in 2021. Heimerman finished with 105 tackles and one interception in his career over 34 games. He was a member of the Tiger football team for six years, redshirting his first year at FHSU and had one year of eligibility restored due to the season lost to COVID in 2020. He was a six-time member of the MIAA Academic Honor Roll and earned the MIAA Scholar-Athlete Award in 2021. He maintained a GPA of at least 3.7 throughout his collegiate career and was a member of two teams that qualified for the NCAA Playoffs (2017 &amp; 2018). A native of Halstead, Kan., Heimerman is working toward an MBA in Marketing at FHSU and already holds a bachelor's degree in Communications (Public Relations and Advertising). Reitz completed her fourth year with FHSU women's soccer in 2022. She was instrumental in helping FHSU qualify for the NCAA Tournament in 2022, the team's first appearance in the national tournament since 2016. 🏐 Smith Center coach headed to Kansas volleyball Hall of Fame

COLBY — Kenny Hernandez began his role as the Colby Community College athletic director this week. Hernandez fills the position vacated by Mike Saddler, who is leaving to become the commissioner of the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference.

"We are extremely excited to have Athletic Director Hernandez join the Colby Community College family," said President Dr. Seth Carter. "Kenny is enthusiastic about advancing the Trojans in the classroom and within their respective sports. He is dedicated to student success and a great fit."

Hernandez came to Colby after four years as the assistant athletic director for communications at Seward County Community College. He was the primary contact with all seven Saints athletic programs for media relations, gameday operations, on-site manager, and Student-Athlete Advisory Committee advisor. In the fall 2022 semester, he was the interim men's and women's tennis coach and guided the women's program to its first Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) singles national championship. His leadership in the conference was as a voting member in the KJCCC Player of the Week committee for Division I softball, women's basketball, and volleyball.

He was also active in the community as an ambassador with the Liberal Chamber of Commerce.

The Minneapolis, Minn., native started at Colby on April 17.

"I want to thank the leadership at Colby Community College for this opportunity to lead the athletic department," Hernandez said. "The passion and excitement I have for Colby Community College will shine through my work, attitude, and involvement on campus."

Before his time at Seward, Hernandez was involved with NJCAA athletics for four years as the voice of the Tetons at Williston State College in North Dakota. He also worked at radio stations in his hometown of Minneapolis and owned a mobile DJ service in multiple locations.

Hernandez holds a bachelor's degree in communication studies with a minor in English and a certificate in leadership and public service from Iowa State University. In December, he will graduate with a master's degree in sports management from the University of Kansas.

In his free time, he likes to attend sporting events and read.

Hernandez named athletic director at Colby CC

BOLIVAR, Mo. – The Fort Hays State men's golf team closed out the 2022-23 season with an eighth place finish at the MIAA Championships held at Silo Ridge Golf &amp; Country Club. The Tigers Jackson Rader and Parker Krob both finished in the&nbsp;top 25.&nbsp;&nbsp; Rader recorded his second top 25 finish at the MIAA Championships, tying for 22nd. The sophomore&nbsp; had rounds of 76, 77, and 75. Krob tied for 24th, just one stroke back of Rader. Krob's 13-over par served to be eight strokes better than his performance at last year's MIAA Championship. He recorded six birdies in total and shot rounds of 75, 77 and 77.

Bryce Cowan had the Tigers lowest round of 74 in his second round. Cowan shot an 81 in the first round and a 78 in the final round for a total of 233. The senior finished in 35th&nbsp;place. Tanner Copeland&nbsp;turned in a 46th&nbsp;place finish (+26, 242). Dustin Nichols&nbsp;finished one slot behind Copeland in 47th (+27, 243). For the second straight year Central Missouri walked away with an individual title after Alex Gentry clinched the tournament's top spot shooting 4-under par. Gentry finished two strokes ahead of former Hays High standout Tradgon McCrae of Missouri Southern State.

McCrae was named the MIAA Golfer of the Year, finishing atop the standings with 39.5 points. Tradgon placed in the top-five in the three designated events he competed in.

⛳ FHSU places two in top 25 at MIAA Championship, McCrae places second

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Marcus Semien and the rest of the red-hot Texas Rangers are headed home on a high note.

Semien had three hits and drove in a pair of runs, and Jonah Heim capped a big day for the Rangers offense with a three-run shot in the ninth inning, leading them to a 12-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday. That wrapped up a three-game sweep and ran their winning streak to four straight on a 5-1 road trip.

“Everybody is starting to get hot, especially the position players,” said Semien, who has driven in a run in five straight games and 11 total over that stretch. “It's a big road trip for us with all our injuries and definitely a confidence boost.”

In the last few weeks, the Rangers have lost Corey Seager to a hamstring injury and Mitch Garver to a sprained knee.

Imagine how the offense would be performing with them.

Ezequiel Duran added a bases-clearing double Wednesday, and Leody Taveras and Adolis García also drove in two runs apiece, helping the Rangers improve to 12-6 to match the fifth-best start in franchise history.

“You can string together some wins and sweeps, it's always a good sign,” Heim said. “We're just passing the baton.”

Martin Pérez (3-1) allowed three runs on eight hits over 5 2/3 innings. He's gone at least five in 34 straight starts, the longest streak ever by a Rangers left-hander, though he allowed more than two runs for the first time this season.

They've been outscored 52-15 while losing six straight games, and they have lost nine of their last 10 to fall to 4-15 under first-year manager Matt Quatraro. Kansas City has won just once in 13 games at home this season.

“There's nothing you can do about the first three weeks of the season,” Quatraro said. “Nobody is happy. You don't want to get beat. You don't want to be embarrassed, especially at home in front of your fans.”

Brady Singer (1-2) didn't give the Royals much of a chance Wednesday. He allowed five runs on six hits and three walks while using 97 pitches just to get through five innings. He had four strikeouts, two of them coming on full-count pitches.

Singer looked like he was developing into a staff ace last season, but this year has been a struggle. The young right-hander allowed eight runs on 10 hits in his last start against Atlanta, and he's allowed 18 runs over 16 innings in his last three outings.

“It looked like it was really fine misses,” Quatraro said. “They did a really nice job of not expanding (the strike zone).”

Just like the previous night, when the Rangers jumped on erratic Royals starter Brad Keller, they took advantage of Singer's early trouble finding the strike zone — fine as the misses were — to jump to a 3-0 lead by the end of the second inning.

Semien led off the game with the first of his three singles and Travis Jankowski worked a four-pitch walk before Garcia's sacrifice fly gave Texas a 1-0 lead. Then in the second, Heim drew a leadoff walk before scoring on a double by Taveras, who proceeded to score when Semien sent a single to right field for a 3-0 lead.

“We just have to keep locking in when there's money on the table,” Semien said.

Rangers: RHP Jacob deGrom (wrist soreness) had no discomfort while playing catch Wednesday and expects to make his next scheduled start. DeGrom left Monday's game in Kansas City after four hitless innings. “We'll continue to watch him,” Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said, “but all went well today.”

⚾Heim, Semien lead Rangers to 12-3 win over KC, series sweep

Carly Lang has been a varsity athlete from the moment she started classes at Hays High School. The volleyball, basketball and soccer standout signed a National Letter of Intent to play volleyball at Garden City Community College on Wednesday morning.

Lang has loved volleyball since she started playing in third grade. The combination of fun, energy and intensity that the sport provides makes volleyball the easy choice.&nbsp;

When she started playing varsity as a freshman, Lang realized there was a future for her in the sport.

Third-year coach Shannon Funk said that Lang's coachability along with her athletic ability allowed her to be an all-around player in volleyball. Three-sport standout Lang chooses GCCC volleyball

PLAINVILLE – The TMP-Marian Lady Monarchs track and field
team brought home 17 medals on their way to a second place finish at the
Plainville Invitational track and field meet Tuesday in Plainville.

The TMP boys finished seventh as a team with seven medal
winners.

Sophomore Shalee Gottschalk won the 100 meter hurdles for
the Monarchs, their long individual champion. The finished with four second
place finishers.

Macara Rohr was second in the 400 meters and the triple
jump. Gottschalk was third in the triple jump. 

TMP had three placers in the high jump. Shyanne Yost was
second, Aliya Seib fourth and Tessa Wentling finished fifth.

The 4x100 meter relay team also finished second. That team
consisted of Shalee Gottschalk, Shyanne Yost, Macara Rohr and Emma Basgall.

TMP had four third place finishers, two fourth place
finishers, four fifth place finishers and two sixth place finishers.

Norton won the team title with 137 points. TMP was second
with 96 and Ellis was third with 83 points.

Carson Liles was the lone first place finisher for the TMP boys.
He won the pole vault. Liles also finished third in the 400 meters.

They also had two fourth place finishers, one fifth place
and two six place finishers.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Bruce Bochy watched from the Texas dugout Tuesday night as, one by one, the Rangers stepped to the plate in the sixth inning to face Kansas City Royals reliever Carlos Hernández and sent his pitches right back at him.

All except for the one that Marcus Semien sent over the center field wall.

Semien's three-run shot highlighted a five-run inning that broke open a close game, and Adolis Garcia added another three-run homer in the eighth, as the Rangers routed the Royals 12-2 to reach their best 17-game start since the 2013 season.

Sandy León also drove in a pair of runs, and three Rangers that reached base on walks from erratic Royals starter Brad Keller also scored, as Texas (11-6) improved to five games over .500 for the first time since July 16, 2019.

“That's fun when it's on your side,” Bochy said of the Rangers' big sixth inning, which began with seven consecutive hits. “It did get contagious and that's baseball.”

The Rangers also dealt the Royals their fifth straight loss. They are 1-11 at home this season, and their 4-14 start is the second worst in franchise history behind only the 2-16 start that Kansas City had in 1992.

“You look at that game, it's close. They blew it open with that big sixth inning, but I didn't think the guys came out here thinking about yesterday,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “We were in a good, competitive game and it fell apart.”

Nathan Eovaldi (2-2) went six innings, allowing two runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out five. It was quite the bounce back after last week, when the Rangers' right-hander allowed six runs on 10 hits in five innings against Kansas City.

“It took me a little bit to find my rhythm,” said Eovaldi, who allowed just one baserunner over his last two innings.

Keller (2-2) allowed three runs on three hits and five walks, including leadoff walks in three of his four innings.

In the third, Brad Miller walked before Travis Jankowski's single gave Texas a 1-0 lead. Then in the fourth, Josh Jung and Robbie Grossman walked before the pair scored on a single by Ezequiel Duran and Miller's fielder's choice.

Still, the Royals were within 3-2 after RBIs by MJ Melendez and Kyle Isbel when the Rangers put the game away in the sixth.

Hernández allowed four straight singles to start the inning, including the two-run base hit by León that extended the Rangers' lead. Semien followed with his three-run shot that traveled 417 feet and made it 8-2.

The line for Hernández: five runs on five hits without a batter retired.

“We had role players that did some major contributions and you're going to need that throughout the season,” Bochy said. “You are going to have guys that need to sit, they're going to miss games, and you're going to need someone to step up.”

Amir Garrett gave up two more hits in the sixth, running the Rangers' streak to seven straight to begin the inning. Isbel cut down Jankowski trying to score from second with a spectacular throw from deep center field, though, and Garrett finally was able to settle down enough to prevent Texas from scoring any more runs in the frame.

Given the way the Kansas City offense has performed this season, they already had more than enough.

Rangers ace Jacob deGrom plans to make his next start after leaving Monday night's game after four hitless innings with a sore right wrist. But the Rangers want to see him throw Wednesday before penciling him into the rotation.

“That's good news for us,” Bochy said. “Right now it's all positive, and he's positive on where he's at with that arm.”

Rangers: RHP Jon Gray (bruised right forearm) is “good to go” for his next start, Bochy said. Gray threw two shutout innings against the Astros on Saturday before taking a line drive off Yainer Diaz's bat off the forearm.

Royals: LHP Kris Bubic (forearm flexor strain) will get a second opinion on his injury Thursday. He experienced tightness during his start Saturday against Atlanta and the Royals have some “underlying concerns,” Quatraro said.

Rangers LHP Martin Perez (2-1, 2.87 ERA) faces Royals RHP Brady Singer (1-0, 4.91) in the series finale Wednesday.

HAYS - Hays High hosted Dodge City in a Western Athletic Conference doubleheader Tuesday. The Indians completed their conference schedule with the two games and grabbed the 2023 title.

The KABC rankings came out during the doubleheader where Hays found themselves at #9 in 5A.

Hays improves to 7-1 on the year. All of their games have been against conference opponents. Dodge City has lost six in a row and is 3-6 on the year and 0-3 in WAC play.

Game 1: Hays 12, Dodge City 2 (5 innings) After falling behind by two runs, Hays scored eight in the third and four in the fourth for a run rule 12-2 victory after five innings. The Indians couldn't take advantage of runners in scoring position in each of the first two innings.&nbsp;

Dodge City didn't get a runner aboard in the first two innings but managed to score two runs in the third aided by a Hays High error. The Red Demons had their own problems in the bottom half of the inning.

Hays recorded just two hits in the eight run third. Dodge City walked six batters and committed four errors. The Indians added four more runs in the fourth on just one hit, three more walks and an errant throw on a fielder's choice.

Greg Hughes worked through four innings for the victory. Tanner Boxberger finished the game in the fifth. Brayden Dreher drove in four runs and had two hits. Carter Graham also had two hits.

Game 2: Hays 7, Dodge City 3&nbsp; Hays scored runs in four different innings and claimed the WAC title with a 7-3 win. The Indians used three different pitchers to navigate the 45 mph wind with Nolan Dreher taking the win.

Hays scored a single run in the second and then two runs in each the third, fourth and fifth innings. The Red Demons scored one run in the third and two in the seventh.

Cooper Sanders had three hits and Brayden Dreher two in the victory.

⚾ Hays baseball claims WAC title; sweep Dodge City

PRATT - The TMP-Marian Monarch softball team ran their win-streak to six games Tuesday with a doubleheader sweep over Pratt-Skyline. The Monarchs defeated the Thunderbirds 8-4 in game one then 13-3 in six innings in the second contest.

TMP-Marian improved to 9-3 on the season. The Monarchs travel to Dodge City for a doubleheader on Friday.

Game 1: TMP-Marian 8, Pratt-Skyline 4 The Monarchs scored two runs in the second, third and fourth innings. Maddie Augustine got them on the board with a two-out RBI single in the second. Brooke Koeningsman hit an inside the park home run and Addison Watson doubled which scored Jaci VonLintel to push the lead to 3-0 in the third.

After the Thunderbirds scored twice in the bottom of the inning to close the gap to 3-2, the Monarchs added two more in the fourth on a passed ball and Halle Dreiling single.

Koeningsman homered and doubled. Watson also had two hits including a double. Maddie Augustine drove in two runs and also picked up the complete game victory in the circle. She allowed only one earned run on four hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

Game 2: TMP-Marian 13, Pratt-Skyline 3 (6 innings) TMP grabbed the early lead with four runs in the top of the second. Sophie Allen drove in Nicole Schumacher with a single. Teagan Gottschalk also scored on an error. Hannah Garcia followed with a two-run single to center.

The Thunderbirds answered with two in the bottom of the inning then scored a run in the third to close the gap to 4-3. 

The game stayed that way until the fifth when the Monarchs scored four. Hannah Garcia opened the inning with a four-pitch walk and later scored on a groundout. Jaci VonLintel followed with an RBI single which scored Halle Dreiling. A Schumacher groundout scored VonLintel then Addison Watson came home following an error.

TMP added five runs, all with two outs, in the sixth.

Koeningsman and VonLintel both had two hits. Koeningsman tripled and VonLintel doubled and tripled. Garcia and Watson both drove in two runs.

Maddie Augustine (7-3) scattered five hits with two strikeouts and a walk and picked up the complete game victory.

🥎 Monarchs run win streak to six with sweep over Pratt Skyline

GREAT BEND -&nbsp;The Hays High softball team jumped out early and defeated Great Bend 8-1 Tuesday at the Great Bend Sports Complex for their second straight win.

The Indians scored two in the first inning and three in the second. Aubree Thomas and Dezarea Schmidt both scored on a wild pitches to get the Indians on the board in the first. Hays scored their three runs in the second on a triple from Schmidt and singles from Riley Dreher and Lakyn Zimmerman who also added a tw0-run double in the sixth.

Schmidt had three hits,
two of them triples, Zimmerman added two hits and drove in four runs.

Thomas picked up the complete game victory. She allowed the one one run on seven hits with six strikeouts and three walks.


Hays High is now 6-3 on the season and 6-1 in the Western Athletic Conference. They close out the three-game series with the Panthers with a doubleheader Thursday at the Bickle-Schmidt Sports Complex.

ABILENE - The Hays High boys tennis team finished in third place at Tuesday's Abilene Invitational.

Ellsworth won the team title with 39 points, Abilene finished second with 37 points. The Indians scored 24.

The No. 2 Doubles team of Ken Schaffer and Kale Schwien went 3-0 and finished in first place. The No. 1 Doubles team of Henry Fitzthum and Xavier Catura went 2-1 and placed third.

Kaiden Bunger and Will Linenberger both went 2-1 in No. 1 and No. 2 Singles respectively and both placed fifth.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Fort Hays State pole vaulter&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-track-and-field/roster/ryan-stanley/7194">Ryan Stanley</a>&nbsp;earned MIAA Men's Field Athlete of the Week honors on Tuesday. The Bennington, Kan. native matched the best mark in NCAA Division II so far this outdoor season at the Pacific Coast Invitational in Long Beach, California this past week. In the process of matching the nation's top mark posted by Matteo Madrassi of Cal Poly Pomona two weeks prior, Stanley also broke his own FHSU outdoor record of 17 feet, 3.5 inches by another 3.5 inches. Stanley had just set the record on April 8, topping the 17 feet, 3 inches posted by teammate&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-track-and-field/roster/jacob-clark/7169">Jacob Clark</a>&nbsp;in the outdoor season of 2022. Stanley finished third overall and was the top Division II performer in a field of over 40 competitors at the Pacific Coast Invitational, mainly from NCAA Division I schools. He finished only behind Hunter Garretson of Akron, who has the fourth-best effort in NCAA Division I this season, and Zach McWhorter who was competing unattached. Two days later, he had another performance of over 17 feet, clearing 17 feet, 0.75 inches at the Brian Clay Invitational.

👟 FHSU's Stanley named MIAA men's field athlete of the week

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — In the last 17 years, the University of Kansas men's basketball program has entered the NCAA Tournament with an average seed of 1.6.&nbsp;

Bill Self's teams have won two national championships (2008, 2022) and played for another (2012) in that span.

The nine-time conference coach of the year said winning is different when fans expect titles every year.

"Winning is a relief," Self said. "Winning becomes a relief and losing is a disaster."

<a href="https://www.hutchcc.edu/dillon-lecture-series">Self spoke in the Hutchinson Sports Arena Tuesday for the Dillon Lecture Series (DLS) about what it takes to be successful</a>. He also addressed how to achieve more after a goal is reached.

Self asked for the Wichita State fans to make some noise. A few did.&nbsp;

He asked for the K-State fans to make some noise. The crowd got a little louder.&nbsp;

As the applause faded, Self told those fans they could kindly leave.&nbsp;

All joking aside, Self praised the success of not just Kansas teams, but all collegiate teams because "Iron sharpens iron."

"It raises the bar for everybody," Self said.&nbsp;"We should be great because someone else is good."

Self is the sixth member of the Naismith Hall of Fame to speak for the DLS, now in its 42nd season.

He outlined what it took to be successful with so much pressure. 

"Show up," Self said. "Be fully present. Be a caretaker and contributor."

Self noted he is the chief caretaker of the most prestigious and storied program in the nation, but urged attendees to apply that same drive to their every-day job and life.

"When's the last time you were just present?" Self asked. "When was the last time you were at the dinner table and didn't look at your phone?"

Self outlined the culture change at KU that led to championships and added success.&nbsp;"The less we have to coach, the better we'll be," Self said of his teams that have been player-led.

He said many of those same concepts can be utilized in daily life.&nbsp;

"Add fun to what's going on," Self said. "We've got to enjoy each other. We have to energize a place."

"It's our responsibility to make sure we add value to everyone else," Self noted.

"Have a culture to make everyone better," Self said.

"Acknowledge what you don't know. Become a sponge," Self said to the youth in attendance.

According to Self, the great Henry Iba was a sponge. As an assistant at Oklahoma State, Self was in charge of chauffeuring Iba.

Self once made a comment about another coach that was not positive. "Can you believe this coach did that?" Self asked Iba.

"Let me tell you something," Iba responded. "A broken clock is right twice a day."

Self implored the youth of the audience to listen to their parents.

"Even as a young person, you might think your parents aren't nearly as smart as you," Self said, but he once again used Iba's example of the clock: It's still right two times a day.
