INDIANAPOLIS - Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6388">Morgan Brasser</a>&nbsp;has been selected to represent Fort Hays State at the 2022 NCAA Division II Women's Golf Central Region Championship, announced Monday by the NCAA. This is the second time Brasser has qualified for postseason competition. This year's central regional will be contested at the Park Course at Hot Springs Country Club in Hot Springs, Ark. The 6,046-yard, par-72 course will be the site of the 54-hole championship next Monday-Wednesday (May 2-4). Brasser's tournament will begin&nbsp;on hole No. 11 with an&nbsp;8:50 a.m. tee time in round one. Tuesday's round will begin at 8 a.m. off either hole No. 1 or No. 11 before the final round begins at either 8:50 a.m. or 9 a.m. on Wednesday off the 11th hole. Brasser posted a stroke average of 77.5 over 22 rounds this season, including two even-par rounds and 15 sub-80 rounds. She finished in the top 10 at five of her 10 tournaments this year, including her first collegiate win at the Holiday Inn Express Classic last month in St. Joseph, Mo. The Andale, Kan. native posted a career-low 71 in the first round of the Diffee Ford Lincoln Invite early in the spring season. An honorable mention All-MIAA selection this season, Brasser finished in a tie for 12th out of 49 golfers at last year's Central Region Championships in St. Joseph, Mo. with a three-round total of 17-over 233. Hays High freshman Izabel Schmidt is making a rather large splash in the pool this spring. Schmidt is currently ranked in the Top 25 in four different events for Class 5-1A.

She holds the top time in the 50 yard freestyle at 24.98. She is the only 5-1A swimmer to break under 25 seconds this season and only three other swimmers in class 6A have broken that barrier.

Schmidt is currently 19th in the 200 yard freestyle at 2:08.32. In the 100 yard freestyle she has the 11th fastest time at 55.68, less than two-tenths of a second from the top ten. That mark also is the new school record at Hays High, besting her own record of 55.85, which broke the 1995 record of 56.33 by Darcy Hantla. The 500 yard freestyle standings rank Schmidt in 21st at 5:50.76.

🏊 Hays High freshman holds top swimming mark

EMPORIA, Kan. - Two more school records went down for the Fort Hays State track and field team Sunday at the Midwest Classic. Fort Hays State also totaled nine provisional qualifying marks and eight event victories in the event, hosted by Emporia State at Welch Stadium. Despite sending only 12 athletes to the golden oval, the women racked up six provisional marks and five individual wins while placing second as a team with 117 points. The men were fourth with 82 team points after recording three provisionals and three first-place finishes. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6485">Jacob Clark</a>&nbsp;highlighted the day by breaking the outdoor school record in the pole vault with a clearance of 17-3. After clearing the bar at 16-0.75 and 16-4.75 without a miss, the Englishman chose to pass at 16-8.75 and instead attempt to clear 17-0.75. Clark missed on his first two attempts before safely surpassing the bar on his final try. The sophomore then raised the bar to the school-record height of 17-3, clearing that mark on his second go. SEATTLE (AP) — Jesse Winker capped an 11-pitch at-bat with a broken-bat single into right field to score Adam Frazier, and the Seattle Mariners beat the Kansas City Royals 5-4 in 12 innings on Sunday to complete a three-game sweep.

Winker had an 11-pitch at-bat in the 10th inning ending with a sacrifice fly that scored Frazier to tie the game at 4-4. Two innings later, Winker fouled off seven pitches from Kansas City's Joel Payamps (0-1) before dumping his first hit of the game into right field. Frazier scored easily when Whit Merrifield's throw was up the line.

Yohan Ramirez (1-0) got the victory escaping a jam in the 12th. Ramirez, the sixth Seattle reliever, walked Michael A. Taylor and Ryan O'Hearn with one out in the 12th, loading the bases. But he recovered to strike out Merrifield and Nicky Lopez.

Ty France continued his hot hitting with a two-run homer on the third pitch of the game for Seattle. France was intentionally walked before even stepping into the batters' box to open the bottom of the 12th and Winker followed with the winner.

Seattle finished off a 7-2 homestand getting the early homer from France, J.P. Crawford's RBI double and strong relief pitching in extra innings.

Hunter Dozier hit a solo homer with one out in the ninth inning off Drew Steckenrider to pull the Royals even at 3-3. It was Dozier's third home run of the season and first on the road.

Steckenrider had not allowed a long ball in his first six appearances this season and blew a save chance for the first time.

The home run cost Seattle starter Robbie Ray a chance at his third straight victory. Ray pitched at least six innings for the fourth straight start to begin his Seattle career following his big offseason signing by the Mariners. Ray's only trouble came in the third inning when a leadoff walk to speedy outfielder Michael A. Taylor and Cam Gallagher's double plated one run.

Salvador Perez doubled later in the inning to score Edward Oliveras and pull even at 2-2.

Ray allowed five hits and struck out five. He's the only pitcher in the majors this year to throw at least six innings in four starts.

Royals: Perez was back in the lineup a day after getting hit on the left hand/wrist by a pitch. X-Rays were negative, and Perez got a day off from catching until coming on in the 10th inning.

Mariners: Seattle had no new additions to the COVID-19 IL on Sunday. Acting manager Kristopher Negrón said the players and coaches affected by the virus this past week were feeling better but was unsure if they would rejoin the team before or during the upcoming nine-game road trip. "The hope, the plan is hopefully they're good to go on this road trip," Negrón said. "That's what we're trying to hope for. They're feeling better and once they pass protocols they'll be ready to go with us."

⚾ Bearcats hold off Tigers to secure series wIn

SEATTLE (AP) — Ty France had five hits, including a three-run homer, and the Seattle Mariners beat the Kansas City Royals 13-7 on Saturday night.

Royals reliever Jake Brentz (0-3) walked four straight batters to open the eighth inning. His bases-loaded free pass to Julio Rodriguez allowed Donovan Walton to score the go-ahead run. Jesse Winker then drove in two runs with a double to make it 10-7 before France homered to center field.

“Those were great at-bats throughout to put us in that situation,” Mariners acting manager Kristopher Negron said. “Everybody was just kind of stringing them all together. Hits are contagious, but pitches and dominating zones are contagious, too.”

France, who had five RBIs, became the first Mariners player with five or more hits in a game since Dee-Strange Gordon on May 1, 2018.

“I’m just getting on time,” France said. "When I’m on time, I’m able to react to pitches, lay off bad pitches and put good swings on pitches. That’s basically what it comes down to for me. When things are going well, it just means my timing’s right and I’m able to get that good swing off.”

Seattle had seven extra-base hits, including a two-run homer by J.P. Crawford in the first.

Diego Castillo (1-0) pitched a perfect eighth for the win.

The Royals entered the seventh trailing 6-4. Carlos Santana tied it with a two-run homer to right field before Edward Olivares gave Kansas City the lead with an RBI double.

“They really fought to get us back and give us a lead,” Royals manager Mike Matheny said. “To give that up usually takes a little more out of you.”

France drove in a run with a single in the bottom of the inning.

“When (France) gets in the box,” Negron said, “he’s ready to do some damage from the first pitch.”

Abraham Toro’s ground-rule double in the third drove in Eugenio Suarez and put the Mariners up 5-1. Toro was the last batter to face Royals starter Kris Bubic, who gave up seven hits and five runs in two innings.

Kansas City scored three times in the fifth.

With the bases loaded and one out, Hunter Dozier singled to score Andrew Benintendi. A throwing error by Crawford at shortstop allowed Salvador Perez to score. Bobby Witt Jr. then drove in Santana with a single.

“I don’t think there was any panic,” France said. “We know the lineup we have and how deep we are.”

A double by Suarez scored France in the sixth to give the Mariners a two-run lead heading into the seventh.

Seattle starter Matt Brash pitched 4 1/3 innings, allowing five hits and three runs.

“We never stop fighting,” Rodriguez said. “That’s who we are. I love this team because of that. We never stop fighting. We just kept on going. We never had a second thought that we might lose this game. We were going for the win.”

The Mariners acquired outfielder Stuart Fairchild from Arizona for cash. Fairchild will report to Triple-A Tacoma. Infielder Kevin Padlo was designated for assignment.

DE SOTO - The Hays High baseball team lost twice Saturday,
falling 2-1 to De Soto then 22-18 the the completion of a suspended game from
earlier this season with Washburn Rural. 

Hays High (7-4) out hit De Soto 9-1 in a matchup of state
tournament qualifying team from a year ago, but the Indians stranded 12
baserunners. The Indians had at least two base runners in all but one inning
but was only able to score the one run.

The Wildcats scored twice in the bottom of the first and
made it stick. A hit batter followed by a double then an errant throw on a grounder
to second base ended up being the difference in the game.

Jack Fields drove in the Indians only run on a fourth inning
double off the left field wall which scored Carson Spray.

Hays had a chance to tie the game in the top of the seventh.
Garrett Wellbrock opened the inning with a single to right field the moved to third
on a double off the bat of Dylan Dreiling. With the infield drawn in, Dalton
Dale lined to second for the first out. Wellbrock tried to score on a passed
ball but was thrown out on a close play at the plate. Derek Riggs then grounded out
to the pitcher for the final out of the game.

Dylan Dreiling (0-1) allowed only the first inning double but suffered the loss in his first start of the season. Dreiling struckout 11 with no walks in six innings.

Jack Millman allowed two unearned runs on five hits with 11
strikeouts and no walks and picked up the win for De Soto.

Wellbrock, Fields and Noah Weimer each had two of the Indians
nine hits. 

On the way home, Hays stopped off at Washburn Rural to complete
their suspended game from April 5th. The Junior Blues were leading 15-5 after
two innings when the game was suspended due to darkness.

Hays scored three and Washburn Rural answered with two in the
third. The Indians then struck for six in the fourth and four in the fifth to pull
within a run at 18-17 but the Junior Blues scored a run in the bottom of the fifth
then plated three in the sixth.

The Indians scored a run in the top of the seventh but hit
into an inning ending double play to end the wild contest.

Dylan Dreiling hit a two-run homer to center and finished
4-for-5 with two doubles, five RBIs and three runs scored. Garrett Wellbrock went
3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBIs and four runs scored. Dalton Dale added two
hits, one of which was a double, and drove in three.

Brayden Dreher, who was the game’s original starter on April
5th, took the loss. Garrett Wellbrock pitched four innings in Saturday’s conclusion
and allowed seven runs (three earned) on six hits with five strikeouts and five
walks.

The Indians head back to eastern Kansas to play in the Butch
Foster Memorial Baseball Classic hosted by Bonner Springs High School. They open with Bonner Springs on Thursday at
4:00 p.m. then play either Tonganoxie or Basehor-Linwood at 6:00 p.m. They will
then conclude the tournament with a game at Legend’s Field on Saturday.

However, the Broncho offense that was on full display in game one came alive with a big rally and powered past the Tigers for a sweep. UCO won by scores of 19-2 and 8-3, improving to 41-7 overall on the season and 20-2 in the MIAA. FHSU is now 23-26-1 overall, 9-13 in the MIAA. Game 1: Central Oklahoma 19, Fort Hays State 2 (5 inn. – run rule) A defensive error by the Tigers to open the first game led to four unearned runs for the Bronchos in the first inning. From that point on, the Broncho offense kept adding on by finishing with five home runs on their way to a season-high 19 runs. SEATTLE (AP) — Julio Rodríguez barely had a chance to pop up from his slide and finish screaming in celebration at second base before getting sent home by a shot off the bat of Jarred Kelenic.

It was a two-pitch sequence of highlights Seattle fans have waited a couple of weeks to see from their young, promising outfielders — with the hope of more to come.

“We’ve been dealing with a lot of things to back to back for a lot of nights now and being able to deliver, both of us, felt really good,” Rodríguez said.

The duo provided all the offense for Seattle on Friday night as Rodríguez lined a bases-loaded, two-run double and Kelenic followed with a two-run triple on the next pitch as the Mariners beat the Kansas City Royals 4-1.

Seattle starter Chris Flexen threw seven strong innings and the Mariners relied on one big inning to reach 5-2 on their nine-game homestand.

This night was about Seattle’s young outfield stars coming through with big hits in a key moment.

“There’s been some calls that haven’t been going his way. But I’m trying to help him as best I can and just stay focused, don’t expand the strike zone and he’s doing a really good job of not doing that," Kelenic said of Rodríguez. "You saw, he got a good pitch to hit, up in the zone and put a good swing on it.”

First up was Rodríguez, mired in an early slump of frustrating strikeouts. Rodríguez began the night tied for the league lead with 22 punchouts, but his swing decisions have been praised by Mariners coaches for laying off pitches that appear outside the zone yet have been called strikes.

Rodríguez came through in the fourth. He fouled off a tough 3-2 pitch from starter Brad Keller, then got on top of a 93 mph fastball and lined it to right-center field.

The 21-year-old slid headfirst into second base and screamed into the noise of a home crowd that has anxiously awaited big moments from the touted prospect.

Kelenic, also with his share of bad luck at the plate early on, followed on the next pitch from Keller with a deep shot to right center that Michael A. Taylor couldn’t track down.

The fourth was the only inning Seattle was able to do damage against Keller, but he failed to make it through the fifth due to a growing pitch count. Keller (0-2) allowed six hits and three earned runs. He had given up five hits and two earned runs in his first two starts combined.

“You look at the bats, the broken bats, the swings that they had off, I thought that was some of his best stuff,” Royals manager Mike Matheny said.

Salvador Perez homered in the sixth, his fifth straight game with a homer in Seattle. That was the only run Flexen (1-2) allowed as he pitched seven innings for the first time this season, scattering six hits and striking out five.

Anthony Misiewicz pitched the eighth and Andrés Muñoz threw the ninth for his first save.

Kansas City’s streak of 11 games to begin the season without an error ended when Keller was unable to cleanly field Abraham Toro’s grounder during Seattle’s big fourth inning. Bobby Witt Jr. also had a throwing error in the eighth. The Royals began the night as one of two teams in baseball that hadn’t committed an error along with San Diego. The 11 games to begin the season without a defensive miscue was a new American League record.

Mariners: Seattle had no new addition to its list of positive COVID-19 cases for the second straight day. The Mariners have yet to have any of their players or coaching staff rejoin the team.

HAYS – The TMP-Marian Monarchs earned a split doubleheader
on an extremely windy and hot afternoon against the Abilene Cowboys Friday in
the first home action of the season. 

Game 1: TMP 5, Abilene 4 In the first game of the day TMP/La Crosse sophomore Caden Morgan
drove in three runs, including the game winner on a walk-off single in the
bottom of the seventh lifting TMP to the 5-4 win.

The Monarchs scored a run in each of the first three innings
while Morgan held the Cowboys bats in check for three shutout innings.

The Monarchs scored runs on a Morgan groundout in the first,
wild pitch in the second and a Morgan single in the third and they led 3-0 heading
into the fourth.

The Cowboys offense was able to get to Morgan scoring four
runs to take a 4-3 lead.

In the sixth TMP tied the game at four after Nick Helget
reached on a lead-off single and came in to score after back-to-back wild
pitches. 

In the to of the seventh the Monarchs centerfield Joey
Mindrup threw the would-be go-ahead runner out at the plate, his second
outfield assist of the game preserve the 4-4 tie.

In the seventh Nick Herrman led off the inning with a walk and
after a sacrifice bunt and a wild pitch Morgan delivered the game-winning RBI
single to left giving TMP the 5-4 win.

Mark Rack turned in three innings of scoreless relief for
the win.

Game 2: Abilene 10, TMP 0 (5 innings) In the second game of the day Abilene got out to a quick
lead and held the TMP bats at bay in a 10-0 win in five innings.

TMP starter Jace Wentling struggled with command, walking
three in more than inning of work and the Monarchs defense committed three
errors allowing Abilene to build an 8-0 inning through an inning and a half.

Wentling suffered the loss. He didn’t make it out of the
second inning and game up eight runs, just three earned on three hits with
three walks.

His counterpart, Brenton Reiff held TMP to just two hits in
five shutout innings for the win. 

With the split of the doubleheader TMP is 4-2 on the season.
Abilene is 5-5.

The Monarchs return to action Tuesday at home against Great
Bend.

⚾TMP splits doubleheader with Abilene

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State ran its win streak to six games with a 10-2 win in game one of a doubleheader with Newman on Friday at Tiger Stadium. However, the Jets built a five-run lead and held off a late charge by the Tigers to win game two 6-5 to split the doubleheader. FHSU is now 23-24-1 overall and 9-11 in the MIAA, while NU went to 18-26 overall, 9-13 in the MIAA. The six game win streak by the Tigers was the longest in&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/coaches.aspx?rc=1030">Adrian Pilkington</a>'s tenure as head coach at FHSU, which began in 2015. The Tigers had five-game streaks in both 2021 and 2019. The last time FHSU had won six in the row occurred in 2014 when they reeled off six straight in non-conference play early in the season.

Game 1: Fort Hays State 10, Newman 2 Game one remained scoreless until the Tigers put up a big five spot in the third to take a commanding lead. Newman cut the lead to 5-1 with a run in the fourth, but the Tigers added on three in the fifth to push their lead out to 8-1. Newman scored once in the sixth before the Tigers scored twice in the bottom of the inning to force the run rule by a score of 10-2.

FHSU is now 23-24-1 overall and 9-11 in the MIAA, while NU went to 18-26 overall, 9-13 in the MIAA. GREAT BEND – The Hays High softball completed the season
sweep of Great Bend Thursday with a doubleheader sweep of the Panthers at the Great
Bend Sports Complex. The Indians won the opener 11-1 then scored single runs in
the sixth and seventh to take the second contest 5-3. The Indians are now 5-3
on the season and 5-1 in the Western Athletic Conference.

The Indians are back in action Monday with a makeup doubleheader
at Garden City.

Game 1: Hays 11, Great Bend 1 
The Indians
scored in every inning except the second. Riley Dreher’s groundout drove in Dezerae
Schmidt, who reached on an error, with the go-ahead run in the third. The
Indians scored two in the fifth then five in the sixth.

Schmidt, Lakyn Zimmerman, Elle Dreiling and Ashlyn Zimmer all
had two of Hays High’s 11 hits. Dreiling homered and drove in two. Aubree Thomas,
Zimmerman and Dreher all added two RBIs.

Dreher (2-1) picked up the complete game victory in the circle
allowing the one run on seven hits with two strikeouts and one walk.

Game 2: Hays 5, Great Bend 3

scored on a wild pitch to break a 3-3 tie in the sixth. Dezarae Schmidt scored
an inning later on a passed ball.

Down 2-1 in the firth, Lakyn Zimmerman singled to left to drive
in Ashlyn Zimmer to tie the game. One batter later, Riley Dreher singled on a
line drive to left which scored Schmidt with the go-ahead run.

Great Bend stole home to tie the game 3-3 in the fifth.

Schmidt finished with three of the Indians six hits.

Aubree Thomas (3-2) allowed eight hits with seven strikeouts
and two walks and picked up the complete game victory.

HAYS – Playing for the first time in nine days, the TMP-Marian
softball team picked up a doubleheader sweep Thursday over Dodge City, 7-2 and
9-5 at TMP. The Monarchs improve to 6-4 on the season. They are scheduled to
host Sacred Heart and Hays High on Thursday, April 28.

Game 1: TMP-Marian 7, Dodge City 2 
The Monarchs
broke a 1-1 tie with two runs in the bottom of the third then scored four in
the fourth.

Alexa Ryersee doubled which scored Brooke Koeningsman with the
go-ahead run in the third.&nbsp; Julianna Baalman
followed with an RBI single which scored Baalman to give the Monarchs a 3-1
lead.

Jaci VonLintel drove in a run with a single in the fourth, Pinch-hitter
Karli Komarek followed with a two-run double which scored Hannah Garcia and VonLintel.

GREAT BEND - Hays High wrapped up Western Athletic Conference play with a single game at Great Bend Thursday. The game was moved up two hours with the threat of weather in the forecast.

The Great Bend offense was in high gear all afternoon as they beat Hays 11-2. The Panthers took an early 1-0 lead in the first, added six in the third and four more in the fifth. The Panthers had multiple base runners in five of the six innings they batted in. The Indians put just ten on the base paths.

Hays falls to 7-2 on the season and finishes WAC play at 6-2. Great Bend improves to 8-3, 5-2. The conference championship will come down to the upcoming result between the Panthers and Dodge City.

lowest round of the season, a 356, and finished seventh at Thursday’s Dodge
City Invitational at the Mariah Hills Golf Course. TMP-Marian shot a 375 and
finished in ninth place.

Bishop Carroll won the team title with a 290, six shots ahead
of Maize South.

Ashton Hernandez led the Indians with an 87.

Bishop Carroll’s Noah Holtzman won the individual title with
a 3-under-par 68.
