The Kansas City Royals scheduled game with the Toronto Blue Jays has been postponed to to expected wet weather Friday night in the Kansas City area.

The two teams will now play a split double header on Saturday that will include two 7-inning games.

The first game begins at 1:10 p.m. and the second at 5:10 p.m. We will not have game one on KAYS (94.3-FM, 1400-AM) due to Fort Hays State baseball. Game two will be joined in progress following the Tigers and Bearcats which begins at 3:00 p.m.

🏐 Tigers fall to UCO in MIAA Tournament opener

COLBY — Trojans center Matt McFarlane signed a letter of intent on Thursday with Wichita State University during the first day of the spring signing period.

At 6-10 and 210 pounds, McFarlane tallied 10.7 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks while shooting 53 percent from the floor this season. As a freshman, he averaged 11.2 points, 6.4 rebounds and 1.8 blocks.

In two seasons at CCC, the Philadelphia, Pa., native earned Jayhawk Conference honorable mention twice. He was part of Colby's top-10 national ranking a year ago in a season in which the Trojans secured the first men's basketball conference regular-season title in school history, followed by their first national tournament berth.

McFarlane chose WSU over Loyola Chicago, St. John's, George Mason, and Colorado.

"Matt is big and athletic," said Shockers Head Coach Issac Brown. "He runs and jumps well, he can score facing up or with his back to the basket, and he has great instincts as a shot-blocker. He's been well-coached by Rusty Elmore and the staff at Colby."

Jakob Junis ran his scoreless streak to 14 innings. The offense pumped out five extra-base hits, stringing enough together to produce a seven-run lead. And when Kansas City’s bullpen was on the ropes, Scott Barlow retired hot-hitting Bo Bichette and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to leave the potential tying run on base and earn the save.

All of which left Matheny stumped when he walked into the postgame clubhouse Thursday night.

“There was no music,” he said. “I heard people yelling at Brady Singer — I don’t know if they’ve made him the impromptu DJ, but he dropped the ball. I was a little disappointed. I wondered if they didn’t think that was a good enough win.”

The Royals have won three straight and four of five to take over first place in the AL Central.

Junis (1-0) was charged with two runs on five hits and a walk while pitching into the sixth, but both his runs scored with reliever Jake Newberry on the mound. Kyle Zimmer also gave up a run before Barlow finished things off.

“Any time you’re winning ballgames, it’s always really fun in the clubhouse,” Barlow said. “The team looks really good, you know? Watching the hitters do their thing tonight was really fun. It’s been fun to watch.”

Guerrero finished a triple shy of the cycle for the Blue Jays. The highlight for them was his two-out homer in the seventh that soared over the fountains in left field and landed an estimated 456 feet from home plate.

It certainly wasn’t spot starter Anthony Kay (0-1), who gave up five runs and six hits in 3 1/3 innings.

“I felt like I made a bunch of good pitches,” he said. “They were just finding holes, and sometimes that’s just how it is.”

The Royals had been in an offensive slumber before breaking out against the Angels on Wednesday. A lineup built to drive the ball into the spacious gaps at Kauffman Stadium continued to pile up the extra-base hits Thursday night.

Andrew Benintendi began the scoring with an RBI double before Kay even got an out. Nicky Lopez continued with an RBI triple in the third — then scored on an error by third baseman Cavan Biggio. But the big blow to the Blue Jays came in the fifth, when four of the first six batters that Kansas City sent to the plate dropped doubles into the outfield.

Jorge Soler led off with the 100th double of his career. Hunter Dozier and Hanser Alberto followed with one-out doubles. And Whit Merrifield capped the four-run frame with a two-run double for a 7-0 lead.

Junis’ streak of 14 scoreless innings to start the season finally ended in the sixth, when Newberry allowed both of the runners he inherited to score during what became a four-run inning for the Blue Jays.

Toronto got another back on Guerrero’s home run before Barlow and the bullpen wrapped things up.

And the music finally got started in the Kansas City clubhouse.

“They picked it up as I was walking out of there,” Matheny said with a wry smile. “I don’t know what they were playing. I don’t know any of those songs.”

Royals: SS Adalberto Mondesi has ramped up his movement but there remains no timetable for his return, Matheny said. Mondesi has been on the injured list with a strained right oblique since the start of the season.

The Blue Jays will send out LHP Steven Matz (2-0, 1.46 ERA) against Royals LHP Mike Minor (1-0, 4.50) on Friday night unless rain forecasted to last most of the day washes things out. Minor is 4-0 in seven career appearances against Toronto.

LAWRENCE, Kan. –&nbsp;Guard Kyle Cuffe Jr. has signed a national letter of intent to play basketball at Kansas, KU head coach Bill Self announced Thursday. Cuffe will be a freshman at KU for 2021-22. Cuffe is a combo guard who verbally committed to Kansas in December 2020 and has reclassified for 2021. The 6-foot-2, 180-pound, Toms River, New Jersey, native played for powerhouse Blair Academy in Blairstown, New Jersey, under coach Joe Mantegna and is known for his explosive athletic ability, toughness and scoring. “Kyle is a young man that has great upside and the determination to be a great player,” Self said. “He’s an explosive athlete that makes plays on both ends of the floor. His father, Kyle Sr., was a great player at St. John’s and has been instrumental in Kyle’s development. He is already a well-prepared player coming from a powerhouse school like Blair Academy under the excellent tutelage of Joe Mantegna.” Due to COVID-19, this past season Blair Academy played only two games and Cuffe averaged 25.0 points, scoring 28 and 22 points, respectively. &nbsp; KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Whitney Randall, a senior women's basketball student-athlete at Fort Hays State University, is the 2021 MIAA Women's Winter Student-Athlete of the Year. Kizan David, a senior track and field student-athlete from Lincoln University, is the 2021 MIAA Men's Winter Student-Athlete of the Year. The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association announced both honors on Thursday, presented by Summit Pointe Financial Group. This award temporarily replaces the annual Ken B. Jones Award, which normally recognizes the top female and top male student-athlete in the MIAA for all seasons. However, since fall sports did not have an opportunity to post accolades for this academic year, the MIAA COVID-19 Task Force implemented student-athlete of the year honors for both the winter and spring seasons with the nomination and selection process structured identically to the Ken B. Jones Award. Randall and David received the most votes from a 13-member panel of conference administrators. They were among five women's and five men's finalists announced on April 7th by the MIAA office. David led the country in the triple jump and was fifth nationally in the long jump entering the NCAA Division II Championships. David has excelled in the classroom during his time at Lincoln, where he is a member of the university's honor society. David was selected to the CoSIDA/Google Cloud Academic All-America First Team and the CoSIDA/Google Cloud Academic All-District First Team in both 2019 and 2020. He is a five-time recipient of the MIAA Scholar-Athlete Award, maintaining a 3.959 GPA as a Computer Information Systems major. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Salvador Pérez homered and doubled to cap off an impressive series, leading Brad Keller and the Kansas City Royals over the Los Angeles Angels 6-1. 

A day after picking off David Fletcher at third base to end a 3-2 win, &nbsp;Pérez drove in two runs. The All-Star catcher went 8 for 12 with four RBIs this week against Los Angeles.

⚾FHSU Baseball Shifts Home Series With Bearcats

GREAT BEND - Dylan Dreiling tied the Hays High School single-game record for strikeouts in leading the Indians to a 3-0 win over Great Bend Tuesday night at the Great Bend Sports Complex. The Indians junior struck out 18 and
allowed only one hit as the Indians bounced back from their only loss
of the season.

Dreiling faced one batter over the minimum as the Indians
improve to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in the Western Athletic Conference. Sage Koelsch
drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the first but Dreiling would get two
strikeouts and first baseman Dalyn Schwarz would make a diving stop at first
base on a grounder off the bat of Chayse Gruber.

The Panthers only hit came in the fourth when Brad
Beck doubled off the glove of diving leftfielder Dominic Bainter. Beck was
later thrown out by catcher Remington Cox trying to steal third. Dreiling
struck out the next eight and closed the game striking out 10 of the final 11
batters he faced.

The Indians scored their runs on a Garrett
Wellbrock two-out single to left which scored Dawson VonFeldt and Ben
Krannawitter. Dreiling added a two-out RBI single in the fifth which scored
Krannawitter who doubled the at-bat before.

runs on six hits with four strikeouts and a loss. The Panthers had their three-game

⚾ Dreiling one-hitter leads Indians past Great Bend

ELLSWORTH – TMP-Marian’s Abby Rueschhoff won the
long jump (15-08.75) and the triple jump (33-05.75) and Sasha Wasinger the shot
put (34-02.25) to lead the TMP-Marian girls at the Ellsworth Invitational Track
&amp; Field Meet Tuesday. 

Makinsey Schlautman finished second in the high
jump (4-10.00) and the Monarchs 4x400 relay team of Emilee Lane, Kadrian
Ayarza, Aliya Seib and Nevaeh Weigel placed second (4:35.62).

Kade Harris finished second in the boys long jump
(20-6.00). Jace Lang was second in the triple jump (37-06.00).

The Monarch girls finished fourth and the boys
seventh.

Trego’s Gunner Wilson won the boys triple jump (40-11.50)
and Windom Giefer the 1600 (4:30.08) and 3200 (9:40.87) to help the Golden
Eagle boys to a second place finish.

HAYS – Hays High got a walkoff 5-4 eight inning
win in game one of their doubleheader with Garden City Tuesday. The Buffaloes
took the second game 9-5 as the Indians move 3-4 on the season and 1-4 in the
Western Athletic Conference.

Hays 5, Garden City 4 (8 innings)

Ashlynn Zimmer singled with one out in the eighth,
stole second, advanced to third on a passed ball then scored the game winning
run on a passed ball.

Garden City scored two in the top of the first.
The Indians tied the game with two in the bottom of the fifth then took a 3-2
lead with a run in the sixth on freshman Lakymn Zimmerman’s double to left
scoring Zimmer.

The Buffs scored two in the top of the seventh to
take a 4-3 lead but Hays forced extra innings when Morgen Berry singled to
right scoring freshman Dezarae Schmidt with two outs.

Freshman Aubree Thomas allowed two unearned runs
with eight strikeouts and no walks for the win.

The Indians struck first, scoring three in the bottom of the first and led 4-1

fourth to take control.

Morgen Berry had two of the Indians six hits and
drove in a run. Raegan Winter knocked in two runs.

The Indians committed five errors resulting in six
unearned runs.

Thomas struck out 10 without allowing a walk but gave
up 12 hits and took the loss.

a 364 and brought home to team title at the Goodland tournament Tuesday.

TMP’s Jackson Schulte was the highest finisher Tuesday. He
fired a 13-over 84 to finish in a three-way tie for 5th.

Landon Rozean earned an 11th place finish with a
16-over 87.

Joel Johnson fired a 95 to finished 20th and Pake
Dewey finished 27th with a 98.

The Monarchs 364 team scored was two shots better than
second place Rawlins County’s 366. Colby was third with a 369.

They were led by Brady Frickey’s ninth place finished with a
15-over 86.

Blake Buckles finished a 96 to lead Hays. Ashton Bickle was
28th with a 99 and Kai Schafer finished 40th with a 104.

🏌️Monarchs win Goodland tournament

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Royals catcher Salvador Perez picked David Fletcher off third with the bases loaded for the final out in the ninth inning, helping the Kansas City Royals beat Shohei Ohtani and the Los Angeles Angels 3-2 Tuesday night.

Danny Duffy pitched one-run ball over six innings, and Perez had two hits and an RBI.

Kansas City’s veteran backstop ended the game by blocking Greg Holland’s 0-2 pitch in the dirt. The ball bounced off batter Jared Walsh and right back to Perez, who picked it up and caught Fletcher venturing too far off third base.

“I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a game end like that,” Royals manager Mike Matheny said. “For Salvador to keep that ball in front of him is so impressive. There’s a lot of risk mitigation there, but with a fearless player like Salvador Perez, he can do anything.”

Ohtani showed off impressive speed on an infield single in the first and added a 431-foot homer to right field in the fifth. The two-way star — just a designated hitter in this one — has four homers this season and raised his average to .364 with three hits. Ohtani has reached base in 10 straight games and has eight RBIs in his last four games.

“He is pretty spectacular,” Angels manager Joe Maddon said. “He’s going up there with a lot of confidence and you’re seeing it with his swing and approach. We’re getting closer to him getting back on the mound, too.”

Duffy (2-0) went six frames for a second straight outing, allowing eight hits and six strikeouts. He ended his night striking out Jack Mayfield with the bases loaded to close out the sixth.

“That was a big situation and my boys backed me up defensively,” Duffy said. “I was just trying to empty the tank and I was able to get a good heater in there. It felt good.”

Holland completed a four-out save for his first of the season, which included a strikeout of Mike Trout, who was fanned four times in the game.

In the first inning, Carlos Santana hit a sacrifice fly to right to score Andrew Benintendi. Santana added another RBI in the third, scoring Whit Merrifield to lead 2-0.

Merrifield hit a pop-up in foul territory in the fifth that was dropped by catcher Kurt Suzuki. He reached base two pitches later and eventually scored on a two-out RBI single by Perez, who is thriving at the plate following a 4 for 4 game Tuesday night.

“We had great situational hitting tonight,” Matheny said. “Those things some people call little things we did well.”

Suzuki hit a sacrifice fly off Wade Davis in the eighth to cut the deficit to one.

Dylan Bundy (0-1) went seven innings, giving up two earned runs on five hits and two walks. He struck out six.

HAYS – Three Ellis pitchers held the TMP-Marian Monarchs to
three total hits in a pair of shutout wins Tuesday at TMP in Hays.

Ellis starter Tegan Cain turned in six shutout inning while
striking out 13 and the Railroaders scored six runs in the top of the third
inning on their way to a 7-0 win in game one of the doubleheader.

Ellis took advantage of a hit-by-pitch to open the game and
scored the game’s first run on a wild pitch to lead 1-0 in the top of the first
inning. 

TMP threatened in their half the first and got a couple of
runners aboard but Cain was able to work off the hook, stranding two runners.

After a one out walk in the top of the first Cain turned in
four and two-thirds innings of no-hit ball. Jace Wentling’s infield single with
two outs in the fifth inning broke up Cains no-hit bid. At one point Cain retired
13 of 15 hitters he faced.

Cain allowed just the one hit with 13 strikeouts and walked
two in the victory as he improved to 2-0 on the year..

In Ellis’ six-run third inning Tyson Jimenez led off the
inning with an inside-the-park home run to make is 2-0.

Jarrett Mader added an RBI single making it 3-0 before Ellis
scored on an error, back-to-back base loaded walks and a hit-by-pitch to take a
7-0 lead through two and a half innings.

TMP’s Caden Morgan suffered the loss for TMP. He allowed six
runs, just one earned, in two and a third innings. He struck out one and walked
one.

Ellis’ Tyson Jimenez allowed only a single with one out in
the bottom of the seventh inning in seven shutout innings in game two of the
doubleheader.

Both teams threatened, getting runners aboard in their half
of the first inning but neither team was able to manufacture any offense.

For TMP Jace Wentling reached on a two-base error to lead
off the game. Jimenez would go on to retire the next 14 batters he faced before
allowing a two-out walk in the fifth. 

It took a one-out base hit by Caden Morgan in the bottom of
the seventh to break up the no-hit bid.

Jimenez turned in seven shutout innings with 13 strike outs,
two walks and just one-hit allowed as he moved to 3-0 on the season.

The Ellis offense kicked off a four-run third inning with
Jimenez collecting his first of three walks in the game. Two hitters later Jimenez
scored on a wild pitch to put Ellis up 1-0.

The Railers added runs on an error, ground out and a George
Crawford RBI single for a 4-0 lead.

Ellis added single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth
innings on their way to the 7-0 win.

TMP starter Mark Rack allowed four runs, just one earned, on
three hits with four strikeouts and three walks in two and two-thirds innings
and suffered the loss.

The Monarchs committed seven errors in the loss and only one
of the seven runs were earned in the game.

Ellis’ Tegan Cain was two-for-five with an RBI and two runs
scored.

Ellis improved to 6-0 while TMP dropped to 4-2.

TMP is scheduled to host Russell on Friday.

WARRENSBURG, Mo. – Central Missouri rallied past Fort Hays State twice on Tuesday (Apr. 13) on its home field. The Jennies won both games of an MIAA doubleheader by a score of 4-2. The Tigers plated two runs in the first inning of both contests, only to see their slim leads slip away twice to the MIAA's top hitting team. UCM improved to 23-9 overall, 12-4 in the MIAA, while the Tigers moved to 16-16 overall, 9-5 in the MIAA. Game 1: Central Missouri 4, Fort Hays State 2 Fort Hays State grabbed an early 2-0 lead and led all the way until the bottom of the sixth inning when Central Missouri slipped past with a three-run rally. Both teams finished with six hits in the game. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5883">Loren Beggs</a>&nbsp;put the Tigers on top 2-0 with a 2-out, 2-RBI double in the first inning. WARRENSBURG, Mo. – Central Missouri rallied past Fort Hays State twice on Tuesday (Apr. 13) on its home field. The Jennies won both games of an MIAA doubleheader by a score of 4-2. The Tigers plated two runs in the first inning of both contests, only to see their slim leads slip away twice to the MIAA's top hitting team. UCM improved to 23-9 overall, 12-4 in the MIAA, while the Tigers moved to 16-16 overall, 9-5 in the MIAA. Game 1: Central Missouri 4, Fort Hays State 2 Fort Hays State grabbed an early 2-0 lead and led all the way until the bottom of the sixth inning when Central Missouri slipped past with a three-run rally. The Tigers scored their two runs off UCM starter Sadie Parks, who threw the first four innings and allowed five hits, but struck out five. However, right after the pop ups, UCM's Makenzie McAtee hit a two-run homer to put the Jennies in front with just two innings to go. Lay made that lead stand up as she pitched the final 6.1 innings of the game to pick up a win. She allowed just three hits to the Tigers during her time in the circle and struck out six. Chapman threw a complete game for FHSU and struck out one. The Tigers look to shake off the pair of tough losses as they remain in the thick of the race for the MIAA Tournament. LAWRENCE, Kan. –&nbsp;Kansas men’s basketball coach Bill Self announced Tuesday that freshman guard Bryce Thompson has entered the transfer portal. “After talking to his family, Bryce let us that he was going to enter the transfer portal,” Self said. “I know Bryce had a tough freshman season with injuries but I enjoyed coaching him this year through the ups and downs. We wish nothing but the best for the entire Thompson family moving forward.” Hampered by injuries which made him miss 10 games in the 2020-21 season, Thompson started four of his 20 games played, including KU’s final three games of the year. The Tulsa native averaged 4.6 points, 1.5 rebounds and 1.1 assists his freshman season. 🏀 KU's Bryce Thompson to enter Transfer Portal

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas forward Jalen Wilson announced that he has declared for the 2021 NBA Draft today.

“I am grateful to say that with prayer and discussion with Coach (Bill) Self and my family, I will test the NBA draft process,” said Wilson.

Wilson will retain NCAA eligibility while testing the draft process. Per NCAA rules, student-athletes can participate in the NBA draft process if withdrawn by Monday, July 19.

“I am excited for the opportunity to learn, workout, and receive valuable feedback on my game that will allow me to make a solid decision on whether to remain in the draft, or return to the University of Kansas for my sophomore year,” Wilson said. “I am ready to get to work and have put all things in God’s hands!”

Wilson, a redshirt freshman from Denton, Texas, averaged 12.1 points per game last season and led Kansas with 8.2 rebounds per contest. He appeared in 28 games with 26 starts and was named to the 2021 Big 12 All-Newcomer and Big 12 All-Freshman teams. Wilson was a unanimous choice by the league coaches for the all-freshman squad after posting eight double-doubles this season.

“Jalen had a terrific freshman year and played a critical role in our success,” said Self. “We knew as the season progressed there would be interest in exploring the NBA process. I fully support his decision and know that he will handle this experience properly. Like Ochai, Jalen will keep his remaining eligibility so he has the option to return based on what he learns throughout this process. This will be great for him to learn what people say about him and ways in which he can improve.”
