🥎 HHS sweeps Great Bend

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Salvador Perez hit a game-ending RBI single, and the Kansas City Royals avoided a sweep by topping the Tampa Bay Rays 9-8 on Wednesday night.

Jorge Soler, Hunter Dozier and Carlos Santana homered for Kansas City, which trailed 6-3 heading to the bottom of the seventh inning. Scott Barlow (1-0) allowed Joey Wendle’s tiebreaking RBI double in the ninth, but got the win when the Royals rallied.

Michael A. Taylor sparked the game-ending rally with a leadoff single for Kansas City. Jarrod Dyson then came in to run, swiped second and advanced to third on Hanser Alberto’s sacrifice bunt against Diego Castillio (0-1).

Dyson then slid home safely on Nicky Lopez’s safety squeeze, tying it at 8. After Lopez advanced on a groundout, Santana was intentionally walked before Perez lined a 2-1 pitch up the third-base line for the winning hit.

The Royals have won 54 straight when leading after seven innings, the longest active streak in baseball.

Wendle had two hits and three RBIs for Tampa Bay, which had won five in a row. Brandon Lowe hit a two-run homer during the Rays’ four-run first inning against Jacob Junis.

Tampa Bay right-hander Michael Wacha permitted three runs and five hits in 5 2/3 innings.

Austin Meadows’ RBI double gave the Rays a 6-3 lead in the seventh. But the Royals responded with four runs in the bottom half.

Alberto hit a two-run triple, and Santana connected for a two-run drive with two out.

Royals: RHP Jesse Hahn (right shoulder impingement syndrome) is eligible to return from the 10-day injured list Thursday.

Rays: Open a 10-game homestand on Friday with a matchup with Toronto, with Tyler Glasnow (2-0, 0.73 ERA) on the mound for Tampa Bay.

⚾ Royals rally past Rays on Salvy walkoff

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State freshman golfer Morgan Brasser&nbsp;received All-MIAA Honorable Mention honors for the 2020-21 season on Wednesday. Only 15 women's golfers in the MIAA received all-conference honors, which included five first team, five second team, and five honorable mention picks. The Andale, Kansas native has a pair of top 10 finishes so far this spring. Brasser placed sixth at the Holiday Inn Express Regional Preview in St. Joseph, Missouri, and fifth at the Central Region Preview in Springfield, Missouri. She was the fourth-highest MIAA finisher in both of those events. Brasser has also finished among the top 15 in events four times this spring. Brasser's lowest round of the spring was a 2-over par 74 shot at the Central Region Preview. She also has a 3-over par round of 75 she carded at the Newman Spring Invitational in Newton, Kansas. She owns a stroke average of 80.33 and owns all five rounds in the 70s by FHSU women's golfers this season. Former Hays High standout Palmer Hutchison is the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference Co-Hitter of the Week. The COVID freshman, who plays at Kansas City Kansas Community College, hit two grand slams against conference opponent Highland CC.

Meadows, Randy Arozarena and Joey Wendle had three hits each, and Manual Margot and Yoshi Tsutsugo had three RBIs apiece.

The Rays roughed up starter Brad Keller (1-2) for five runs in 1 2/3 innings. Keller allowed three hits and walked three, including Lowe to load the bases on his final pitch. Jake Newberry relieved and walked the next two batters to give Tampa Bay a 5-0 advantage.

Carlos Santana homered and had two hits and three RBIs for the Royals.

Tampa Bay rattled off another four-run inning in the sixth sparked by five straight hits from the heart of the batting order.

Rich Hill allowed four runs in two innings for Tampa Bay. Andrew Kittredge (3-0) followed with a scoreless inning, and Trevor Richards pitched one-run ball over the last three innings for his first career save.

Zunino and Meadows hit back-to-back homers in the ninth.

Rays: RHP Cody Reed (left thumb weakness) was placed on the 10-day IL. Tampe Bay recalled RHP Brent Honeywell Jr. from the alternate training site. Honeywell tossed 1 1/3 innings, allowing one run, two hits and two walks.

Royals: The Royals have only had three players spend time on the injured list this season. RHP Josh Staumont spent one day on the IL for a non-disclosed injury.

The Rays have yet to announce the starter for the series finale Wednesday. Jacob Junis (1-0, 1.50) will take the mound for Kansas City.

The Tigers finished eighth in the team standings and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5899">Colton Bobek</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5901">Bryce Cowan</a>&nbsp;led the Tigers in a tie for 21st&nbsp;individually. The Tigers started off strong on Monday, leading the tournament through the opening third of the first round. By the end of the first round, the Tigers were able to top two of the five ranked teams in the MIAA, shooting 303 to sit in fourth place. Bobek was in fifth individually after an even-par 72 and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5903">Chandler Roberts</a>&nbsp;was one stroke of Bobek with a 1-over par 73. A 76 from Cowan and an 82 from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5904">Marcus Willey</a>&nbsp;figured into the team scoring as well. PLAINVILLE - The TMP-Marian girls finished second and the boys
third at the Plainville Invitational track meet Monday afternoon. The Plainville boys won their own
meet and Trego was second. The Ellis girls finish third.

Invitational and the girls finish third Monday. 

The boys win 11 events led by Jaren Kanek who won four gold medals in the 100, 200, long jump and he was a member of the winning 4x100
relay. Ty Adams finished first in the 110 hurdles while Gavin Meyers the 300 hurdles. Jordan Dale won the high jump, Tucker Veach the pole vault, Gaven Haselhorst the shot put, Trey
Adams the discus and Bryce Salmans the javelin.

HAYS - The Hays
High boys golf team finished third at their own Bob Blazer Invitational Monday
at Smoky Hill Country Club. They finished one shot back of Great Bend and 14 shots
behind first place Garden City. 

Jason
Krannawitter led the Indians with an 8-over-par 79 and finished in third place,
one shot off the lead. Indian sophomore Braden Hoskins tied for 10th with an
84.

Dodge City’s Cooper
Scheck and Topeka West freshman Miles Alonzo both shared the lead after
shooting a 7-over-par 78.

⚽ HHS girls' defeat Buffs to push win streak to six

HAYS - The Hays
High Indians split their makeup doubleheader with Dodge City Monday at the Hays
High Field. The cruised to an 11-1, five-inning run-rule victory in the opener
but couldn’t overcome eight errors and drop the nightcap 9-2.

The Indians are
now 5-2 overall and 3-2 in the Western Athletic Conference. The Red Demons
improve to 6-4 and 2-0 in the WAC.

Game 1: Hays 11, Dodge City 1 (5 innings) Dylan Dreiling
struck out 10 and had two of the Indians nine hits in the five inning run-rule
victory. Dreiling (3-0) scattered two hits and allowed one run while walking
four.

The Indians
struck for two in the first. Ben Krannawitter reached on a dropped third
strike, stole second, moved to third on Dreiling’s gound out then scored on a
passed ball. Dalton Dale drove in Garrett Wellbrock with the second run with a
two-out single.

Krannawitter
singled with two outs in the second driving in Dawson VonFeldt to push the lead
to 3-0 in the second.

Hays scored
five in the third. Remington Cox and Dominic Bainter both singled. Bainter and
courtesy runner Noah Weimer scored when Dalyn Schwarz reached on an error. The
Indians scored the next two runs when Dreiling reached on an error by the Dodge
City first baseman. Krannawitter then scored the fifth run on a passed ball.

The Indians ended
the game early with three runs in the fifth. With one out, VonFeldt and
Krannawitter were both hit by pitches and scored on Dreiling’s double to
center. Dreiling scored on Wellbrock’s double to end the game.

Game 2: Dodge City 9, Hays 2 The Indians couldn’t
overcome eight errors resulting in five unearned runs.

Dodge City scored
one in the second, three in the third, two in the fourth then put it away with
three in the seventh.

A leadoff error
led to the first run in the second. A leadoff walk and one-out triple pushed
the lead to 2-0. Alden Knedler followed with a home run to right center to put
the Red Demons up 4-0. Back to back two-out errors led to two more runs in the
fourth.

Garrett
Wellbrock (2-1) allowed six runs (three earned ) on seven hits with two
strikeouts and two walks over six innings and took the loss.

Sophomore Aiden
Sowers kept the Indians off balance all night, scattering six hits over six
innings with six strikeouts and one walk for the win.

⚾ Indians split doubleheader with Dodge City

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Josh Fleming pitched two-hit ball into the sixth inning, Kevin Kiermaier led a strong effort from the bottom of Tampa Bay’s batting order and the Rays beat the Kansas City Royals 4-1 Monday night.

Fleming (1-1) struck out three in 5 1/3 innings, getting big cheers from friends and family who journeyed over from his hometown of Bridgeton, Missouri. The 24-year-old left-hander has allowed just one run in 10 1/3 innings this year.

“I didn’t hear them when I was pitching,” Fleming said. “Once I got taken out, I heard a big cheer. It was just awesome.”

Relievers Ryan Thompson and Hunter Strickland carried the baton out of the bullpen and held Kansas City to two hits, both in the eighth. Chris Mazza shut the door in the ninth.

“It was just a really well-pitched game by Fleming and the rest of the relievers,” Rays manager Kevin Cash said.

Danny Duffy (2-1) struck out eight in six innings and allowed two runs — neither earned — and four hits with two walks.

“Duffy was fantastic today,” Royals manager Mike Matheny said. “He continues to impress us and made pitches all the way through.”

Kiermaier had two hits and two RBIs from the nine-hole and combined with seven-hitter Joey Wendle and eight-hitter Willy Adames for five of Tampa Bay’s seven hits.

“Kiermaier came up big for us,” Cash said. “(Kiermaier) does a lot of things on a nightly basis to help us win and his bat is going to get going maybe today was the start of it.”

Duffy held to Rays to only one baserunner until the fifth, when Wendle singled with two outs. Wendle scored from first on an error by first baseman Carlos Santana on a high infield popup, which highlighted a two-run inning.

“I know that’s one Carlos would tell you he should’ve had,” Matheny said.

Kiermaier added an RBI single in the ninth.

Kansas City threatened in the eighth with two on and one out with Whit Merrifield at the plate, but he struck out to end the rally. Jorge Soler drove in the Royals’ run in the ninth with a sacrifice fly.

Duffy notched his 1,000th career strikeout in the fourth inning and passed Tom Gordon for sixth in club history.

“It’s something I knew I was approaching,” Duffy said. “When it happened and my boys congratulated me it meant a lot. I’m thankful to be here as long as I have.”

The longtime Royal has spent 11 seasons in the majors, all in Kansas City, one of three pitchers to do so.

Rays: RHP Chris Archer (right lateral forearm tightness) is eligible to return off the 10-day injured list on April 21st but did not make the trip to Kansas City.

Royals: SS Adalberto Mondesi (strained right oblique) remains on the 10-day injury list. The 25-year-old has yet to suit up for the Royals this season.

Rich Hill (1-0, 7.53) will pitch for Tampa Bay on Tuesday. Hill will be the sixth consecutive southpaw starter that the Royals will face — the longest stretch in franchise history. Right-hander Brad Keller (1-1, 9.58) will make his fourth start of the season for Kansas City.

She joins Kirsten Leisinger from Missouri Southern, the Women's Field Athlete of the Week, as the weekly honorees from the conference office. Holman won the 100-meter dash at the ESU Midwest Classic with a provisional time of 11.79 seconds. She was also the top NCAA Division II finisher in the 200-meter dash, placing third overall with a time of 24.52 seconds. She also helped the 4x100-meter relay team finish first at the meet with a time of 47.83 seconds. Holman owns the seventh-fastest time in the 100 meters in NCAA Division II as she posted a time of 11.70 seconds a week earlier at the Wichita State Open.&nbsp;&nbsp;

⚽ FHSU's Arndt and Bevis named to 2021 spring GAC All-Tournament Team

HAYS, Kan. - Fort Hays State completed the series sweep of Northwest Missouri State by taking both games of the doubleheader Sunday afternoon (Apr. 18) at Larks Park. Fort Hays exploded for a total of 24 runs in the twin bill, including five home runs and 16 hits. With the two wins, Fort Hays State has now swept back-to-back series running its win streak to six games.&nbsp; <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6043">Grant Schmidt</a>&nbsp;led the Tigers by going 3-for-6 at the plate and recording five RBIs on the day.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6057">Ed Scott</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6024">Griffin Brunson</a>&nbsp;were right behind Schmidt, contributing four RBIs of their own during the doubleheader.&nbsp; The Tigers moved to 8-20 overall and 8-16 in MIAA action with the sweep while the Bearcats fall to 12-18 overall and 10-14 in conference. Fort Hays State looks to continue their six game winning streak with another home series next weekend. The Tigers will square off with the Washburn Ichabods in a three game set beginning with game one Friday night.&nbsp; Game 1: Fort Hays State 10, Northwest Missouri 8 After the Bearcats took an early lead in the first inning with a run, Fort Hays State answered back with a two-run homer by&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6043">Grant Schmidt</a>&nbsp;in the bottom of the first. Northwest Missouri countered with a solo home run in the second and another solo home run in the fourth to take a 3-2 lead momentarily. Once again, Fort Hays took the lead back with another two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth inning.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6047">Garrett Stephens</a>&nbsp;belted his sixth long ball of the year to put the Tigers ahead 4-3.&nbsp; The Tigers did the majority of their damage in the bottom of the fifth inning. ⚽ Tiger women shutout by Bearcats

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Salvador Perez tapped his bat twice on the plate to make sure it wasn’t cracked, then sent the next pitch he saw from Toronto reliever T.J. Zeuch into the left-field fountains, breaking open a scoreless game and sending the Kansas City Royals to a 2-0 victory over the Blue Jays on Sunday.

Brady Singer kept the Blue Jays off the board through six innings. Kyle Zimmer (1-0) and Josh Staumont each worked a perfect inning, and Greg Holland finished off the two-hitter for his second save of the season.

Kansas City has won a major league-leading 55 consecutive games when ahead after seven innings.

“Well, we can start by talking about Salvy again,” Royals manager Mike Matheny said, “because he just continues to amaze us. Our fans love him and he keeps doing things to make them love him more. Just so fun to watch.”

Perez’s two-run shot off Zeuch (0-2) in the seventh inning came one day after his two-out, walk-off homer gave the Royals a 3-2 win and split of their doubleheader. That homer soared an estimated 459 feet, the one Sunday a mere 441.

Kansas City also won the opener Thursday night to take a series from Toronto for the first time since September 2017.

“That shutout to me, just giving up a couple hits — there’s a lot of pride that catchers take,” said Matheny, himself a former backstop, “and I know Salvy takes a lot of pride in how that game unfolds. But they all did a terrific job.”

The Royals won while leaving 13 on base, and the teams combined to go 1 for 18 with runners in scoring position.

“We’re just showing up and trying to do our best,” said Perez, whose banner week included a 4-for-4 performance against the Angels in which he had his 1,000th hit and a walk-off pickoff against Los Angeles the very next night.

“It was a great week,” Perez admitted with a smile, “and hopefully we can continue to do it.”

Sunday’s game was scoreless through six, but it wasn’t so much a pitcher’s duel as an exercise in offensive ineptitude.

The Royals used a pair of walks each of the first two innings to load the bases against Robbie Ray, but each time he left them that way. They worked two more walks in the third and stranded those runners, and left runners standing on second base each of the next two innings to run their total to 10 through five.

Singer must be wondering whether his teammates like him.

The Royals did not score a single run with him on the mound in his first two starts, and they failed to again despite a solid job against the Blue Jays. Singer allowed just two hits and walked three while striking out six.

At least he rendered the Blue Jays equally ineffective with runners on base. They left two aboard in the second, runners on the corners in the third and two more in the fourth, keeping the game scoreless even with busy base paths.

🎾 Tigers Fall to 18th-Ranked Ichabods

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kansas City Chiefs tight end Fred Arbanas, a key member of their first two Super Bowl teams in the 1960s and ’70s who later had a long career in county politics, has died. He was 82.

The Jackson County Democratic Party in Missouri, for which Arbanas was a major player for more than four decades, announced his death in a brief statement Saturday. No cause was given.

Arbanas, a member of the Chiefs’ Hall of Fame, was a six-time all-AFL selection and was picked to the All-Time AFL Team by the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He was a member of the Dallas Texans team that won the 1962 AFL title and, after the club moved to Kansas City, helped the rechristened Chiefs reach the Super Bowl in 1967 and 1970.

After his playing career, Arbanas served more than 40 years in the Jackson County Legislature. He was so influential in working with the local parks system that a golf course was renamed in his honor in 1999.

GOODLAND — Northwest Tech recently announced the launch of collegiate Women’s Wrestling at the college, with competition beginning in the Fall of 2021. The move comes following a decision at the March board meeting as the college works to strengthen enrollment and increase female student-athletes on campus.&nbsp;

“We have discussed adding the program for a few years, but with the recent decision by the NJCAA to recognize women’s wrestling as an emerging sport the timing was right to make the move,” said Athletic Director Rory Kling.

Northwest Tech is no stranger to women’s wrestling, as it was a club sport during the 2012/2013 and 2013/2014 academic years. “We are excited to bring the program back and provide an additional opportunity for student-athletes to earn a degree in a high-demand and high-wage field of study,” said Kling.

Women’s wrestling is on the rise all across the country. According to the National Wrestling Coaches Association website, the number of women wrestling at the high school level has grown from 804 athletes in 1994 to well over 21,124 by 2019 – and that was as of two years ago. Even while participation has increased, opportunities for female wrestlers in Kansas to compete at the collegiate level in-state are few and far between. According to the Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association website, there are only five private NAIA colleges and universities in Kansas with women’s wrestling. “High school programs have grown rapidly in Kansas and all around the Midwest,” said Northwest Tech President Ben Schears. “This is an opportunity for us to be among the first in the state to meet the growing demand and provide an equal opportunity to compete.”

The creation of the women’s program will be a great addition to a highly successful NJCAA Men’s Wrestling program at Northwest Tech. The men’s program is currently ranked 9th in the nation and has already produced three national champions, eleven All-Americans, and has several nationally-ranked wrestlers heading to the national competition in late April. “We want to see the same success, talent, and skill with our women’s program as we have with our men’s program,” said Wrestling Head Coach Chris Guillot. “Our goal is to develop high-quality student-athletes in the classroom and on the mat.”

Both the men’s and women’s programs will be under the guidance of Head Coach Chris Guillot and Assistant Coaches Lelund Weatherspoon, Ramico Blackmon, and Ben Kritsonis. “Our coaching staff are the right people at the right time to get this off the ground,” said Schears. “They have the vision, skills, and mindset to get the program started on the right foot.”

HAYS, Kan. – Betsy Parmlay's two-run walkoff single lifted the Fort Hays State softball team to a doubleheader sweep of Northwest Missouri State Saturday at Tiger Stadium. The Tigers held on to win the opener 3-2 then rallied to take the second game 5-4.

The Tigers improved to 18-16 overall and 11-5 in the MIAA. The Bearcats slipped to 13-17 overall and 7-11 in the MIAA.&nbsp; Game 1: Fort Hays State 3, Northwest Missouri State 2 Fort Hays State took an early 2-0 lead in the opener when Loren Beggs took advantage of the north wind and drove a ball high into the air in right field for a two-run triple. The Bearcats opened the third with a double, triple and single and tied the game 2-2. Tiger starter Michaelanne Nelson&nbsp;stopped any further damage with a pair of strikeouts to end the inning. The Tigers grabbed the lead back in the bottom of the inning when Jessica Espinoza&nbsp;drove home the decisive run of the game with a single up the middle. Nelson shut the Bearcats down the rest of the way, never allowing a runner further than first base the remainder of the game. She finished with eight strikeouts in another complete game effort, allowing seven hits with a walk.

Breck Dickey also pitched a complete game for the Bearcats, allowing seven hits and four walks. She struck out two. Game 2: Fort Hays State 5, Northwest Missouri State 4 Trailing 4-3, the Tigers loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh and won it on Betsy Pamley, two-run single to right field. The Bearcats scored a run in the third&nbsp; and two in the fourth to take a 3-0 lead.&nbsp; Northwest starting pitcher Raven Defrain helped her own cause with an RBI single in the third, then Jacee Winn drove home a run in the fourth. The Bearcats picked up an extra run on a throwing error. The Tigers mounted a rally against Defrain in the fourth when Loren Beggs and Jessic Espinoza goth singles then moved up a base on a passed ball. Kristen Reed drove home the first Tiger run on a sacrifice fly. Elise Capra came through with a pinch-hit RBI single. Sarah Tiffany&nbsp; completed the rally with an RBI double to the right-center gap to tie the game 3-3. Northwest Missouri State retook the the lead in the sixth on a 2-out RBI single by Olivia Daugherty.

Lily Sale started the Tigers seventh inning rally with a walk. Grace Philp advanced her to second with a sacrifice bunt. Sara Breckbill walked then a chopper by Loren Beggs found its way through the left side to lead the bases. The Bearcats threw out the potential tying run at the plate on an infield grounder for the second out. Parmley then entered as a pinch-hitter and drove in the tying and winning runs on a flare to right field that fell out of the reach of Dougherty trying to make a diving catch. The Tigers will host Missouri Western in a matchup of top four teams in the MIAA standings Sunday at 12 pm.&nbsp;
