GREAT BEND – The Hays High softball completed the season sweep of Great Bend Thursday with a doubleheader sweep of the Panthers at the Great Bend Sports Complex. The Indians won the opener 11-1 then scored single runs in the sixth and seventh to take the second contest 5-3. The Indians are now 5-3 on the season and 5-1 in the Western Athletic Conference.
The Indians are back in action Monday with a makeup doubleheader at Garden City.
Game 1: Hays 11, Great Bend 1
The Indians
scored in every inning except the second. Riley Dreher’s groundout drove in Dezerae
Schmidt, who reached on an error, with the go-ahead run in the third. The
Indians scored two in the fifth then five in the sixth.
Schmidt, Lakyn Zimmerman, Elle Dreiling and Ashlyn Zimmer all had two of Hays High’s 11 hits. Dreiling homered and drove in two. Aubree Thomas, Zimmerman and Dreher all added two RBIs.
Dreher (2-1) picked up the complete game victory in the circle allowing the one run on seven hits with two strikeouts and one walk.
Game 2: Hays 5, Great Bend 3
Lauren Klein
scored on a wild pitch to break a 3-3 tie in the sixth. Dezarae Schmidt scored
an inning later on a passed ball.
Down 2-1 in the firth, Lakyn Zimmerman singled to left to drive in Ashlyn Zimmer to tie the game. One batter later, Riley Dreher singled on a line drive to left which scored Schmidt with the go-ahead run.
Great Bend stole home to tie the game 3-3 in the fifth.
Schmidt finished with three of the Indians six hits.
Aubree Thomas (3-2) allowed eight hits with seven strikeouts and two walks and picked up the complete game victory.
