Hays High freshman Izabel Schmidt is making a rather large splash in the pool this spring. Schmidt is currently ranked in the Top 25 in four different events for Class 5-1A.

She holds the top time in the 50 yard freestyle at 24.98. She is the only 5-1A swimmer to break under 25 seconds this season and only three other swimmers in class 6A have broken that barrier.

Schmidt is currently 19th in the 200 yard freestyle at 2:08.32. In the 100 yard freestyle she has the 11th fastest time at 55.68, less than two-tenths of a second from the top ten. That mark also is the new school record at Hays High, besting her own record of 55.85, which broke the 1995 record of 56.33 by Darcy Hantla. The 500 yard freestyle standings rank Schmidt in 21st at 5:50.76.

The State Swim & Dive Meet is May 19th-21st at Shawnee Mission School District Aquatic Center.
