🎾 Alfonso and Paz Diaz take doubles match, Tigers fall to Griffons in season finale

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State dropped its final match of the 2021-22 season to Missouri Western on Saturday by a score of 7-0. Irina Alfonso and Maria Paz Diaz notched the lone win of the nine matches figuring into the team competition.

Alfonso and Paz Diaz won the No. 1 doubles position by a score of 7-6 with a 7-5 tiebreak win. However, the Griffons took the other two doubles matches by scores of 6-1 and 6-0 to gain the first team point of the competition.

From there, the Griffons went on to sweep the singles matches in straight sets. Alfonso and Paz Diaz each won the most games within their matches. Alfonso fell 6-1, 6-4 at the No. 1 position, while Paz Diaz fell 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 3 position. Nicole Heyn (No. 2), Kylie Aufdengarten (No. 5), and Aliyah Frederick (No. 6) all lost by scores of 6-1, 6-1. Fiorella Mendez (No. 4) fell 6-0, 6-0 in her match.

Gracen Friess won an exhibition singles match 8-0 over Nicole Donnelly, while Heidi Lubbers fell 8-2 in her singles exhibition with Ariella Curci. Heidi and Hope Lubbers played a doubles exhibition and defeated Curci and Donnelly 6-0.

Fort Hays State finished the season at 7-12 overall. Mendez led the team in singles wins for the season with 12, followed by Paz Diaz with 10. Alfonso and Paz Diaz teamed for the most doubles wins on the team with five for the season.
