EMPORIA, Kan. - Two more school records went down for the Fort Hays State track and field team Sunday at the Midwest Classic. Fort Hays State also totaled nine provisional qualifying marks and eight event victories in the event, hosted by Emporia State at Welch Stadium.
Despite sending only 12 athletes to the golden oval, the women racked up six provisional marks and five individual wins while placing second as a team with 117 points. The men were fourth with 82 team points after recording three provisionals and three first-place finishes.
Jacob Clark highlighted the day by breaking the outdoor school record in the pole vault with a clearance of 17-3. After clearing the bar at 16-0.75 and 16-4.75 without a miss, the Englishman chose to pass at 16-8.75 and instead attempt to clear 17-0.75. Clark missed on his first two attempts before safely surpassing the bar on his final try. The sophomore then raised the bar to the school-record height of 17-3, clearing that mark on his second go. Clark is now fifth on the DII performance list for the season.
Mattie Rossi won a pair of events with two provisional performances, including breaking her own school record in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:00.17. She now sits in seventh on the national performance chart in the 400m hurdles. The junior also won the 100m hurdles after crossing the line in 14.17.
Summer Kragel and Alexandra Hart tied for first in the high jump with a NCAA DII provisional clearance of 5-6. The pair had an equal number of total misses on the afternoon, so they shared the first-place honor.
Fort Hays State also had a pair of provisional qualifying performances in the javelin, with Rhyann Brown placing first with a top mark of 144-4 and Addie Berens placing third after a top heave of 140-3.
Ryan Stanley and Mark Faber also surpassed the provisional threshold in the pole vault, with Stanley finishing second with a top clearance of 16-8.75 and Faber just behind in third at 16-0.75.
Other event winners for the men included Dayton Williams in the high jump after soaring over the 6-5 bar and Kolgan Ohl in the hammer with a top heave of 173-9. David Enns was second in the javelin with a top mark of 186-7, while Jack Pakkebier was third in the 400m hurdles with a time of 55.82.
In addition to Rossi's school-record time in the 400m hurdles, two other Tigers etched their names on the top 10 performance list at FHSU during the DII era in the same race. Taylor Savolt is now third on the list after finishing second with a time of 1:02.34, while Chloe Stanley was fifth with a time of 1:04.27, eighth-best on the FHSU list. Savolt also cleared an outdoor personal-best 18-5 in the long jump, placing second, while Stanley was also second in the 100m hurdles after crossing the line in 14.68.
Taylor Linn matched her personal-best clearance in the pole vault at 11-9.75, good for third place on Sunday.
Fort Hays State will next compete at home when the Tigers host the FHSU Alex Francis Classic on Friday beginning at 2 p.m. (full schedule here (PDF)) before returning to Emporia for the MIAA Championships May 6-8.
