It took the TMP-Marian Monarchs and the Russell Broncos
three overtimes to determine a winner on Friday night in Russell and when it
was all said and done it was the Broncos who emerged victorious.

After a TMP (1-1) punt on their first possession Russell (2-0)
wasted no time getting on the board as Jacob Windholz scored from 66 yards out leading
Russell to a 7-0 first quarter lead.

The Broncos’ defense was able to keep TMP in check for most
of the first half. TMP’s first four offensive possessions ended in a pair of
punts, a turnover on downs and an fumble.

The fumble led to a second quarter Russell field goal for a
10-0 lead.

The Monarchs offense got on the board late in the first-half
thanks to the passing attack.

TMP’s Kade Harris capped off a touchdown drive that took less
than a minute with a 34-yard pass to Andrew Schwartz that cut the margin to
10-7.

In the third quarter TMP added a 30-yard Jace Wentling field
goal to tie the game at 10 with six and a half minutes to play in the quarter.

Neither team was able to find the endzone the rest of the way
in regulation as the game went to overtime.

In the overtime period TMP failed to score on their first
possession but Harris blocked the potential game-winning field goal for Russell
to force a second overtime.

In the second overtime period Russell got on the board
quickly with a 16-yard touchdown for a 17-10 lead.

The Monarchs answered right back with a Harris one-yard touchdown
run and the game was again tied, this time at 17.

In the third overtime period TMP attempted a fake field goal
on fourth down that resulted in an interception.

Two plays later Russell got into the endzone on a 16-yard
touchdown run as they clinched the 23-17 win.

TMP’s Kade Harris had 59 yards on 19 carries with that one
touchdown. He also threw for 96 yards and one score.

The Russell win break a three-game win streak for TMP over the
Broncos.

TMP hosts Plainville Friday night in their first home game
of the season while Russell takes on Norton.

MINNEAPOLIS — Andrew Benintendi had four hits and two home runs, the last a two-run shot in the 11th to send the Kansas City Royals to a 6-4 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Friday night.

Benintendi had five RBIs in his second multi-homer game of the season in Minnesota. He’s driven in 11 runs in his last three games for Kansas City.

Ervin Santana (2-2) pitched around a walk and the automatic runner in a scoreless 10th against his former team, and Greg Holland earned his eighth save in 12 chances.

Juan Minaya (2-1) took the loss for the Twins.

Benintendi’s 15th homer of the year off Minaya was an opposite-field fly that just found its way over the wall. Kansas City had loaded the bases in the 10th against Minaya, who got Salvador Perez to ground out to end the inning.

The ball was flying early on a mild night in Minnesota, with the temperature 80 degrees at first pitch.

Benintendi opened the scoring in the first with a three-run homer off Twins rookie starter Griffin Jax. He also hit two home runs in Minnesota on May 1.

The Twins followed with a pair of home runs in the bottom of the first off Royals rookie starter Daniel Lynch.

Byron Buxton led off with a deep drive to center field that bounced off the facing of the second deck an estimated 457 feet. Jorge Polanco doubled and Rob Refsnyder singled in front of Josh Donaldson’s 22nd homer of the year.

Twins: Manager Rocco Baldelli confirmed the season is over for LHP Taylor Rogers, who is on the injured list with a left middle finger sprain. Rogers has been out since July 27. ⚾ Benintendi pushes Royals past Twins in 11th with 2nd homer

CONWAY, S.C. (AP) — Reese White ran for 102 yards and three touchdowns, Grayson McCall threw for two scores and ran for a third and No. 17 Coastal Carolina beat Kansas for the third straight season, 49-22 on Friday night.

Coastal Carolina (2-0) hosted a Power Five team for the first time in its five seasons in the FBS and the Jayhawks (1-1) didn't have the firepower to spoil the home team's “White Out” promotion in front of the largest crowd here ever at 17,697.

The Chanticleers' wins at Kansas the last two years certainly raised eyebrows. This one wasn't much of a shocker as Coastal Carolina showed off a deep, talented offense and a relentless defense to put away its Big 12 Conference opponent.

White had touchdown runs of 2, 19 and 3 yards against Kansas after two touchdowns in team's 52-14 opening victory over The Citadel last week. McCall began the scoring with a 33-yard TD pass to Jaivon Heiligh, then had a 2-yard scoring run.

Kansas quarterback Jason Bean, a North Texas transfer, had touchdown runs of 34 and 46 yards as the Jayhawks drew to 28-22 midway through the third quarter.

However, the Chants responded with White's final two touchdowns to open up a 20-point lead.

Kansas entered after snapping a 13-game losing streak in the opener and hoped to keep the momentum going on Coastal's teal blue turf.

But the Chanticleers and McCall proved too potent for first year Jayhawks coach Lance Leipold's program. They scored on three of their first four possessions and got a blocked punt for a TD by Alex Spillum to take a 28-9 lead.

McCall finished 17-of-21 passing for 245 yards. Heiligh had six catches for 122 yards, his fourth consecutive game with 100-plus receiving yards.

Spillum, a speedy, 6-foot-2, 190-pound safey, blew through the line to block the punt deep in Kansas territory. He followed the ball into the end zone and covered up for the score.

About the only mistake Coastal Carolina made was exhuberance. What looked like an interception by cornerback D'Jordan Strong was celebrated wildly by Coastal's players. An unsportsmanlike conduct flag few for excessive celebration and, when the pick was overturned on review, Kansas had the ball back and a first down.

The Jayhawks continued on a 66-yard touchdown drive for their last lead, 9-7.

Kansas: The best thing for the Jayhawks? Coastal Carolina comes off the schedule after beating Kansas the past three years. The Chants figured to be an easy takedown when the games were made, but Coastal turned this into a one-sided contest.

Coastal Carolina: The Chanticleers have an offense that has looked unstoppable through two games. McCall leads the way with NFL-caliber receivers like tight end Isaiah Likely and receiver Heiligh catching everything thrown their way. White has stabalized things at tailback in place of last year's top rusher, C.J. Marable.

Hays High opened Western Athletic Conference play against Great Bend on Friday night at Lewis Field Stadium. The Indians won the 2020 title, their first since 2014. Hays possessed the ball seven times and scored on all seven possessions of the first half. An errant snap on a Great Bend punt led to a safety for a 51-0 lead after the first two quarters. A continuous clock second half kept the score the same as Hays ran through a large majority of their roster.

The Hays defense held Great Bend to minus nine yards&nbsp;

Roy Maroni started the scoring frenzy with a 25 yard touchdown run on the second play of the game. Hays opened in excellent field position on a long kickoff return by Jordan Dale.

Malik Bah doubled the score with a one yard scoring run in the first quarter. Jaren Kanak connected on pair of touchdown passes in the first quarter for a 28-0 score. Jordan Dale and Kyrese Groen were the recipients of the two scoring passes.

Hays added 23 more points in the second quarter. Maroni scored from 23 yards, Great Bend sailed a punt snap out of the end zone, Kanak hit Kiefer for a 20 yard score and Kanak busted a 79 yard run for six points.&nbsp;

Hays totaled 360 yards in the game. 327 yards from the first half.

Hays improves to 2-0 on the year and 1-0 in the WAC. Great Bend is 0-2 and 0-1. The Indians take their first road trip of the season, heading to Liberal next Friday.

HAYS - The Fort Hays State volleyball team split another doubleheader on Friday, going 1-1 on the opening day of the 2021 Tiger Classic inside Gross Memorial Coliseum. In their first match, the Tigers gave No. 16 Southwest Minnesota State all it could handle, taking the opening set against the undefeated Mustangs before narrowly dropping the next three frames. FHSU followed that up with a dominating win over Cameron, outhitting the Aggies .391 to -.012. The Tigers are now 3-3 on the year after winning one match and losing one match on each of the first three days of competition. Southwest Minnesota State is now 6-0 on the year, while Cameron dipped to 1-6 overall. Fort Hays State continued its well-balanced offensive attack, with six different players picking up at least 10 kills through the two contests.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6104">Morgan Christiansen</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6112">Riley Tinder</a>&nbsp;both picked up 15 kills on the day, while&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6106">Emily Ellis</a>&nbsp;added 12 kills and 13 blocks.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6108">Elysia Glowacz</a>&nbsp;dished out 39 assists, with&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6237">Jaida Felix</a>&nbsp;close behind with 34. Tinder also led the team with 24 digs on the day. Fort Hays State wraps up the home weekend with two more matches on Saturday. The Tigers will first battle Black Hills State at 1:30 p.m. before hosting Adams State at 5 p.m. to conclude the tournament. No. 16 Southwest Minnesota State 3, Fort Hays State 1 (25-22, 20-25, 21-25, 22-25) The Tigers came out of the gates hot, holding the 16th-ranked team in the country to a .000 attack percentage in the opening set while winning 25-22. Neither team could gain much of an edge through the majority of the opening set, with neither side leading by more than three points until a late Tiger run. With the score tied at 18, Fort Hays State grabbed all the momentum with a 6-1 run to go in front 24-19. A Mustang error opened the run before three-consecutive blocks by the Tigers kept things rolling. Ellis teamed up with&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6208">Claire Olson</a>&nbsp;on the first two rejections before assisting Tinder on the final block, pushing the lead to 22-18. After a Tiger error, kills from Ellis and Christiansen helped the Tigers reach match point. A service miscue four rallies later gave FHSU a 25-22 victory. The Tigers again kept things close in the second set, leading as late as 15-14. But Southwest Minnesota State took control down the stretch, using an 8-3 run to turn a 17-17 tie into a 25-20 win. The same was true in the next two sets, with neither side leading by more than four at any point. SMSU used late runs in both the third and fourth sets to hang on to the victory. Christiansen led the Tigers with nine kills while adding six blocks and one service ace. Ellis recorded seven kills and seven blocks and posted an attack percentage of .294. Fort Hays State 3, Cameron 0 (25-16, 25-13, 25-10) The Tigers took care of business in the night cap, cruising past the Aggies in straight sets. Fort Hays State recorded just eight attack errors in the match while holding Cameron to 18 kills and 19 errors. Fort Hays State never trailed by more than one point in the victory. Cameron led as late as 7-6 in the second set and 4-3 in the third set, while FHSU was never behind in the opening frame. Tinder went to work in the opening set, dropping in five kills in a 6-1 FHSU run midway through the frame that stretched the lead to 20-10. UNDATED (AP) - The Big 12 didn’t even wait for Oklahoma and Texas to leave before expanding and the league may not necessarily be done growing after adding BYU, UCF, Cincinnati and Houston.

“This was a very clear and relatively easy decision for the eight continuing members of the Big 12,” Texas Tech President Lawrence Schovanec said Friday after that group unanimously approved applications from the four schools that sought membership after the league learned the Sooners and Longhorns will leave for the Southeastern Conference no later than July 2025.

Within hours of the Big 12 vote, all four formally accepted the invitations.

There had been no indication that Oklahoma and Texas, the only Big 12 teams to win football national championships, were looking to move until the reports emerged a week after Big 12 football media days in mid-July. By August, both had accepted formal invitations to join the SEC.

The moves prompted speculation that the Big 12 would soon be in a death spiral without its two most storied programs, at least in the revenue-producing sport of football. Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby had been largely quiet in recent weeks as the expansion was put in motion.

“Speaking purely on a personal level, I enjoy working with people that I trust, that I like and that I know share the values that I have for intercollegiate athletics,” Bowlsby said Friday.

BYU said all its sports will begin Big 12 schedules in the 2023-24 athletic season. BYU is an independent in football, but competes in the West Coast Conference for basketball and so-called Olympic sports like track and swimming.

Bowlsby said current American Athletic Conference teams UCF, Cincinnati and Houston will join no later than July 1, 2024, but he “certainly wouldn’t foreclose” on the possibility of them coming in a year earlier with BYU.

The AAC requires members to give 27 months’ notice if they plan to leave the league, though there could be negotiations between the schools and that league to reduce that time.

AAC Commissioner Mike Aresco said the league expected Houston, Cincinnati and UCF to “abide by the conference bylaws to ensure an amicable and orderly transition” as the league considers its options.

“Today’s news confirms what we have said all along regarding our status as a power conference,” Aresco said. “The irony that three of our schools are being asked to take the place of the two marquee schools which are leaving the Big 12 is not lost on us. Our conference was targeted for exceeding expectations in a system that wasn’t designed to accommodate our success.”

The four schools were among 11 interviewed by the Big 12 in 2016 when it considered expansion before staying at 10 teams.

Bowlsby described that process five years ago as “a voyage of exploration," but said the decision by Texas and Oklahoma to leave prompted renewed consideration of available options.

BYU President Kevin Worthen said the Big 12′s expansion study five years ago made the process much faster and easier this time. Cougars athletic director Tom Holmoe said that failed attempt to get into the Big 12 turned out to be a “launching point.”

The Longhorns and Sooners have said they will honor their current contracts with the Big 12 and do not plan to join the SEC until 2025, when the conference’s current television rights contracts with ESPN and Fox run out. That means the Big 12 could have up to 14 members for a season or two.

Bowlsby said the Big 12 will take the departing schools at their word “and if it turns out that that isn’t the case, we feel like we have the necessary legal prerogatives to manage it as we see fit at the time that it occurs.”

The Big 12 distributed about $345 million of total revenue between its 10 members for the 2020-21 academic year that was greatly affected by the pandemic.

Asked about the potential value of media rights for the new conference without Texas and Oklahoma, Bowlsby didn’t offer specific numbers but said the league added as much as it could in football and more to arguably the best basketball conference in the country that already has reigning men's national champion Baylor and perennial power Kansas.

“I think live sports is always going to be a valuable commodity, and if you have live sports with competition among the very best universities you can put together in an alliance, you have a chance to go forward and do good things,” he said.

As for possible future expansion, Bowlsby said the league was ready if there "are targets of opportunity or as there are situations that dictate that we would change composition.”

With the four additions, the Big 12 will be spread across eight states and three time zones. There are more than 2,300 miles between the Central Florida campus in Orlando and BYU in Provo, Utah. Once settled in the Big 12, the Knights and Cougars will both face average trips of around 1,300 miles each way for conference games.

West Virginia still will average about 1,100 miles each way on the road, but the Mountaineers at least picked up a relatively short trip with Cincinnati from Morgantown. Houston faces much shorter trips for its Texas-based foes.

“Joining the Big 12 Conference is a historic step in our institutional journey and signifies the tremendous growth and success attained academically and athletically over the last decade,” Houston Chancellor Renu Kahtor said.

Half the league’s 12 charter members will remain when Texas and Oklahoma are gone.

The Big 12 began play in 1996, when all Big Eight teams (Colorado, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State) joined four Texas schools from the old Southwest Conference (Baylor, Texas, Texas A&amp;M and Texas Tech) to form a new league split into six-team divisions.

Arkansas had left the SWC to join an expanded 12-team SEC, starting play there with South Carolina in the 1992 season. The SEC is now set to grow to 16 teams, with its last four additions all coming from the Big 12.

Big 12 welcomes BYU, UCF, Cincinnati and Houston

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Tyrann Mathieu remained in the COVID-19 protocol on Friday and the Kansas City Chiefs remain uncertain whether their All-Pro safety will be cleared in time for their season opener against the Cleveland Browns.

The Chiefs essentially are preparing two defensive game plans depending on whether Mathieu, who is fully vaccinated, returns the two negative tests 24 hours apart that are required for him to take the field on Sunday.

"Listen, we're going to see how it goes," Chiefs coach Andy Reid said after their final practice of game week. "The other guys have practiced and are ready to go. If he can't go, he can't go. If he can, he can."

Mathieu tested positive Sept. 1, giving the Chiefs plenty of time to work other players into the mix. Juan Thornhill is likely the first in line next to Daniel Sorensen in the base defense, but the Chiefs also have Armani Watts available on the back end.

Thornhill, a second-round pick in the 2019 draft, had an excellent rookie season before sustaining a knee injury in Week 17 that kept him out of their Super Bowl run. He returned last season but acknowledged over the summer he was never fully healthy, despite starting eight games and appearing in every one during the regular season.

"If Juan has to play, he'll do fine," Reid said. "He's had a good week of practice, couple weeks of practice here."

Still, it's almost impossible for any single player to replace Mathieu, who had arguably the best season of his career last year. He picked off a career-high six passes — one in a playoff win over Cleveland — along with making 62 tackles, causing havoc in the offensive backfield and earning his second consecutive All-Pro nod since joining the Chiefs.

Beyond the numbers, Mathieu acts as the quarterback of the defense and is often tasked with getting players lined up.

"Obviously, he's one of the better players in this league and we'd love to have him out there. Unfortunately, we just don't know that yet," Chiefs linebacker Anthony Hitchens said. "We've just been communicating extra this week from the front to the back. It's going to take more than one guy. It's a team effort."

The Chiefs already are missing middle linebacker Willie Gay Jr., who landed on injured reserve with a toe injury sustained in their preseason finale. The IR designation means Gay will miss at least the first three games of the season.

One bit of positive news: Defensive end Frank Clark looked good in Friday's practice and should be ready to go. He hurt his hamstring in early August, aggravated it about a week later and did not appear in any preseason games.

"He worked hard and I thought he looked pretty good," Reid said. "We'll see how it goes with him. He's sure looked good."

The Chiefs are expecting a sellout crowd at Arrowhead Stadium after the pandemic limited them to 22% of capacity, or about 16,000 fans, throughout last season. But despite President Joe Biden's vaccine mandates this week — and several NFL teams requiring them for fans to attend games — the Chiefs will not require them for their season opener.

In fact, there are very few restrictions in place for Sunday's game.

"We continue to work with the local authorities here," Chiefs president Mark Donovan said. "We're requiring masks in the indoor spaces, the club level. But the president's announcement last night — we've got a tight window here before the game to make a change happen, but we'll take that into consideration."

Donovan said it's possible the Chiefs could change their policies before their next home game Sept. 26 against the Chargers, especially given the low vaccination rates in Missouri. As of Friday, only 46% of residents were fully vaccinated.

"Our objective is the same objective that we had last year: How do we keep a safe environment for our fans?" Donovan said. "We're not experts in the COVID space. We're not experts in the vaccination space. ... But we as an organization continue to fully support full vaccination. We think it's the safest way forward for all of us."

🏐Volleyball Makes Home Debut with Tiger Classic this Weekend

BALTIMORE (AP) — Kelvin Gutierrez hit a game-tying two-run single, two Kansas City outfielders collided on a ball hit by Cedric Mullins, allowing two more runs to score, and Ryan Mountcastle followed with a two-run homer as the Baltimore Orioles scored all their runs in the eighth inning in a 9-8 win over the Royals on Wednesday night.

“We haven't had too many of those types of innings in the last few years," Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said. “It took us eight innings to put some at-bats together. We were pretty flat offensively. We caught a break. We don't get too many of those usually.”

Baltimore has taken two of three from the Royals, who haven't won a series at Camden Yards since April 2014.

Salvador Perez hit his 42nd homer for Kansas City and trails Shohei Ohtani by one for most in MLB. He leads the majors with 104 RBIs, moving one ahead of José Abreu, of the Chicago White Sox, who plays later Wednesday at Oakland.

"I've never see something like that in my career," Perez said about the outcome. "Today was one of those games you just have to forget about it.”

Austin Hays extended his career-best 15-game hitting streak with an RBI double in the eighth for Baltimore's first run. Anthony Santander and pinch-hitter Ramón Urías had RBI singles off Josh Staumont (3-3), cutting the deficit to 5-3.

After Gutierrez's two-run single off Jake Brentz, Mullins hit a fly ball between right fielder Hunter Dozier and center fielder Edward Olivares, who bumped into one another, allowing two runs to score. Mountcastle capped the rally with his 26th homer.

“That was awesome,” Mountcastle said. “That was a great win. We didn't give up. It's very easy to do that this late in the year. For us to battle back and win today was huge.”

Dillon Tate allowed a two-out, three-run homer to Andrew Benintendi in the ninth that cut Baltimore's lead to 9-8. However, Tyler Wells got the last out and earned his second save.

Benintendi finished with three hits and five RBIs.

Manny Barreda (1-0) picked up his first career win.

“Baseball-wise, this is probably the pinnacle of my career right now,” Barreda said. “This is the moment I have been waiting for since I was a little kid.”

The Orioles matched their largest comeback of the season, joining an 8-7 win on July 28 against the Marlins when they overcame a 5-0 disadvantage after two innings.

“To have one inning that gets away from us like that, our worst inning of the year, that is hard to swallow,” Royals manager Mike Matheny said. “We had some things get away from us today.”

Perez moved into sole possession of third place on the Royals’ all-time list with his 194th career home run.

Orioles: 1B/DH Trey Mancini (oblique) is still sidelined with soreness. BALTIMORE (AP) — Kelvin Gutierrez hit a game-tying two-run single, two Kansas City outfielders collided on a ball hit by Cedric Mullins, allowing two more runs to score, and Ryan Mountcastle followed with a two-run homer as the Baltimore Orioles scored all their runs in the eighth inning in a 9-8 win over the Royals on Wednesday night.“We haven't had too many of those types of innings in the last few years," Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said. “It took us eight innings to put some at-bats together. We were pretty flat offensively. We caught a break. The Tigers now sit at 1-1-1 on the season and the Saints move to 2-0-1.

It was the Tigers' only shot of the first half, while the Saints recorded six in the first 45 minutes. Despite the Tigers' best efforts, the Saints were able to score at the 64th&nbsp;minute. The teams were nearly even in shots during the second half, the Saints ending with a 9-8 advantage. In overtime the Saints added one more shot, while the Tigers fired off a barrage of three attempts in the final minute but came up empty. Goalkeepers&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6244">Kieran Brown</a>&nbsp;(FHSU) and Liam Walraven (MU) both recorded two saves in the match.
