KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Salvador Perez tied a Royals record with his 48th homer of the season before leaving with a sprained right ankle, and Kansas City went on to beat the Cleveland Indians 10-5 on Wednesday night.

Perez, who already broke the big league record for homers by a catcher, leads the majors in home runs and RBIs (121).

Perez said he slipped on the bottom step coming into the dugout in the middle of the second inning. He said he expects to play Thursday.

“It’s amazing,” he said about tying the team record. “We’ve got four more games to see (what happens).”

Perez homered on the first pitch he saw from Zach Plesac and struck out in the second inning before being replaced in the third by Cam Gallagher. Perez matched Jorge Soler, who smashed 48 homers for the Royals in 2019, and reached 200 for his career.

“It was probably the loudest of the group (of homers),” manager Mike Matheny said. “We see a lot of angles from our vantage point. You don’t see that kind of angle and the ball carry like that one did. It was pretty impressive. He’s a special hitter.”

Hunter Dozier hit a tiebreaking two-run triple in the seventh and scored on a wild pitch by Nick Wittgren (2-9) to make it 8-5. The Royals added two more runs in the eighth as the franchise won its 4,000th game.

“The guys were concerned,” Matheny said about Perez’s injury. “You talk about a guy being the heart and soul, that’s who he is.

“It was a beautiful job by the bullpen. They stepped up and our offense followed suit.”

Greg Holland (3-5), the third of five Royals pitchers, earned the win with two hitless innings.

Whit Merrifield led off the game for the Royals with a double, his 40th of the season. He became the seventh player in major league history to reach at least 40 doubles and 40 stolen bases in two seasons, but he was more concerned about his teammate.

“It takes the air out of you, especially when he’s doing something that special,” Merrifield said of Perez’s injury. “I think everything checked out. Hopefully he feels better tomorrow. He’s got something special going and I’d like to see him keep it going.

“I joke with Nicky, when he hits a homer when we’re on base it’s like we hit a homer, because it’s always a no-doubter. We get to jog around the bases.”

Royals starter Daniel Lynch had to leave the game in the fourth inning when he was struck by a line drive off the bat of Austin Hedges. The Indians scored twice in the fourth and once in the fifth on a double by Yu Chang to tie the game at 5-5.

Cleveland’s Jose Ramirez had a sacrifice fly in the first for his 100th RBI of the season.

“He’s checked the boxes, and it’s nice to see that,” acting Indians manager DeMarlo Hale said. “Personal goals are one thing, but being in the team concept is important too. He’s done that all year.”

The Royals announced before the game they have signed outfielder Michael A. Taylor to a two-year contract extension worth $9 million. Taylor is rated as one of the top defensive outfielders in baseball. He started in center field Wednesday, going 1 for 4 with a double and a run scored.

The Royals placed RHP Brady Singer on the 10-day injured list with right arm inflammation. He left Tuesday’s game with two outs in the first inning. He was replaced on the active roster by RHP Tyler Zuber.

Shane Bieber (7-4, 3.14 ERA) pitches for the Indians in Thursday’s series finale. He worked three perfect innings in his last outing, his first appearance since June 13. He had been out with shoulder issues.

Left-hander Angel Zerpa will make his major league debut for the Royals.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -&nbsp;The Kansas City Royals announced today that they have agreed to a two-year extension with center fielder&nbsp;Michael A. Taylor&nbsp;that will cover the 2022-23 seasons. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.&nbsp;

In 137 games with the Royals this season, Taylor has 12 home runs and 14 stolen bases, and is one game shy of matching his career high of games played with Washington in 2015. He’s scored a career-high 56 runs this season and his 52 RBI are his most since recording 53 in 2017.

Taylor leads the Majors with 21 defensive runs saved, according to&nbsp;FanGraphs, and his 14 outs above average are tied for the Majors lead among all outfielders. Taylor leads all center fielders with a career-high 11 outfield assists, which are the most by a Royals center fielder since&nbsp;Melky Cabrera&nbsp;had 13 in 2011.

Taylor, 30, signed with Kansas City last offseason as a free agent, after spending the first seven seasons of his big league career with the Washington Nationals, who selected him in the sixth round of the 2009 First-Year Player Draft out of Westminster Academy in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.

Taylor won a World Series with the Nationals in 2019 and is a career .316 (12-for-38) hitter in 16 postseason games, with four home runs and 10 RBI.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Salvador Perez hit his major league-leading 47th home run, and the Kansas City Royals defeated the Cleveland Indians 6-4 Tuesday night.

Perez also leads the majors in RBIs (118) and go-ahead home runs (17). The 31-year-old Perez trails Jorge Soler (2019) by one for the club record in homers.

“We probably won’t be the only team,” Cleveland acting manager DeMarlo Hale said when asked if he will be glad when he doesn’t have to see Perez again. “He’s had an incredible year.”

Perez’s home run in the sixth inning gave the Royals the lead. But, the Indians came back to tie the game in the top of the eighth.

In the bottom of the eighth, Nicky Lopez tripled to the gap in left-center, scoring Whit Merrifield. Lopez scored on a wild pitch to give the Royals a two-run lead.

“(Reliever Brian Shaw) is obviously one of the better relievers in the game,” Lopez said. “He has been for a while. Lefties don’t like him very much because he has that cutter. I was fortunate enough to get it to 3-2 and put a good swing on the ball.”

Josh Staumont (4-3) came on with two outs in the eighth and got the win. He was the seventh pitcher of the game for the Royals.

Blake Parker (2-1) took the loss for the Indians.

Brady Singer started the game for the Royals, but he didn’t last long. He gave up three runs on three hits in 0.2 innings. After he delivered a pitch, second baseman Merrifield raced in from short right and motioned to the dugout. Singer was pulled with upper right arm discomfort.

“I threw a few sliders, and the last one just got me,” Singer said. “I’ve started to feel better, and I’m not overly concerned about it.”

Singer was replaced by Ervin Santana, the first of six Royals relievers who allowed one run in 8.1 innings.

“That’s incredible,” Kansas City manager Mike Matheny said. “It starts with Erv. It might be one of the toughest roles in baseball. You go 10 days without seeing the field and come in in situations like that and be able to get us into the middle part of the game.”

The Indians scored three runs in the first. Myles Straw led off with a double, Amed Rosario walked and Jose Ramirez singled. Franmil Reyes hit a single to right, scoring Straw and Rosario. Ramirez scored on a double play.

Andrew Benintendi drew the Royals within one run with a two-out, two-run home run in the bottom of the first, driving in Salvador Perez.

Perez doubled leading off the fourth. Benintendi sent him to third with a deep fly ball, and Carlos Santana drove him in with a sacrifice fly.

Perez then put the Royals ahead with one out in the sixth with his 429-foot blast.

“I talked to (Soler) the other day,” Perez said. “He’s one of my best friends. He said to me, ‘Go get it.’”

The Indians tied it in the eighth when pinch-hitter Oscar Mercado singled with one out. Yu Chang, who had lined out to the outfield twice earlier in the game, doubled home Mercado.

The Royals reinstated OF Michael A. Taylor from the bereavement list on Tuesday. To make room, OF Edward Olivares was optioned to Triple-A Omaha.

The Indians will send RHP Zach Plesac (10-6, 4.54 ERA) to the mound. Plesac is 1-0 with a 2.45 ERA in two starts this season against the Royals. In his career, he’s been even better, as he’s never lost to Kansas City. He’s 6-0 with a 1.99 ERA, allowing 34 hits in 45.1 innings. His WHIP is 0.949, fourth best among all opponents he’s faced at least twice.

The Royals will counter with LHP Daniel Lynch (4-6, 5.40 ERA). Lynch has faced the Indians twice in his debut season, going 0-1 with a 5.91 ERA.

Mateo Pulcini of Oklahoma Christian and Harry Crockett of Hutchinson Community College tied for first, both at 3-under overall. Pulcini charged in the final round from 15 spots down on the leaderboard, carding a 5-under par to tie Crockett who shot even in the final round. Three other individuals finished under par overall. The Tigers return to action on October 11-12 at the Holiday Inn Express Classic, hosted by Missouri Western in St. Joseph, Missouri.

The Tigers shot 896 as a team with rounds of 299, 295, and 302. The Tigers finished under 300 as a team in a round for the second and third times this season. Mateo Pulcini of Oklahoma Christian and Harry Crockett of Hutchinson Community College tied for first, both at 3-under overall. Pulcini charged in the final round from 15 spots down on the leaderboard, carding a 5-under par to tie Crockett who shot even in the final round. Three other individuals finished under par overall. BARTON COUNTY - The TMP-Marian girls’ golf team won Monday's Hoisington Invitational held at the Lake Barton Golf Course.&nbsp;The Monarchs shot a 208 in the nine-hole event and tied with host Hoisington. 

Plainville’s Corbyn Marquess won the individual title with a 37. Teammate Emily Stamper was part of a three-way tie for second placed with a 48. 

Hays High’s Gracie Wente finished fifth with a 49. 

TMP was led by Ella Brummer who shot a 51 and finished eighth. Ashley Hipp and Madelyn Rozean both fired a round of 52 and tied for 10th.

🎾 Norton wins HHS Invitational

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs fumbled away a chance to beat the Baltimore Ravens two weeks ago.

They threw away&nbsp;<a href="https://pro32.ap.org/article/chargers-rally-beat-turnover-prone-chiefs-30-24-kc">a chance to beat the Los Angeles Chargers</a>&nbsp;on Sunday.

Now, the two-time defending AFC champions find themselves in the strangest of circumstances: They're last in a division the Chiefs have won five straight years, and the road gets no easier with three games away from Arrowhead Stadium sandwiched around a visit from Josh Allen and the reigning AFC East champion Buffalo Bills.

“I think we'll be ready for the challenge. It's really early in the season,” said Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who threw for 260 yards with three touchdown passes and a pair of interceptions against the Chargers.

“We haven't had many of these —we haven't had any since I've been quarterback — where we're behind all the teams in the division,” Mahomes said. “This game, it's a tricky deal. You don't play your best game every week, you're going to lose.”

It could be even trickier if coach Andy Reid misses time this week.&nbsp;<a href="https://pro32.ap.org/article/chiefs-coach-andy-reid-stable-condition-hospital">He spent time in the hospital</a>&nbsp;dealing with dehydration and an illness after the loss to the Chargers, though he was released Monday and planned to return to the team soon.

The Chiefs (1-2) barely got by the Browns in their opener, then watched the Ravens run roughshod over their defense in a 36-35 loss in Baltimore. But it was the litany of mistakes they made against the Chargers, including so many blown plays by the defense that fans started booing at one point, that really left a sour taste.

There were the two interceptions by Mahomes, one of which bounced right off intended receiver Marcus Kemp. And two fumbles, including one by Clyde Edwards-Helaire, whose fumble in the closing minutes against the Ravens kept Harrison Butker from trying a potential winning field goal.

There was the pass interference call on L'Jarius Sneed with just over three minutes left that gave the Chargers first-and-goal and led to a tying field goal. And another on DeAndre Baker on fourth down with 48 seconds left that gave Los Angeles a new set of downs and ultimately allowed Justin Herbert to hit Mike Williams with the winning score.

“This is unusual for us, to be honest. It's a bit of a crossroads for us,” assistant coach Dave Toub said. “We have great leadership. Our guys will battle back strong after a week of practice. We'll clean it up, clean up the turnovers. Execute on the offensive side. Stops on defense. We'll come back this week and we'll get back on track."

The Chargers continued a trend of defenses allowing Kansas City to easily throw short passes if that means keeping Tyreek Hill and Co. from huge gains downfield. Mahomes averaged just 5.9 yards per attempt with a long of 28 yards.

Edwards-Helaire atoned for his fumble in part by running for 100 yards and, more impressively, averaging nearly 6 yards per attempt. He also took a screen pass for a touchdown as the Chiefs mounted their comeback.

After the Chiefs were gouged by Cleveland and Baltimore on the ground, leaving them with a last-place rush defense, they fared better on Sunday. The Chargers averaged 3.5 yards per attempt and Austin Ekeler was held to 55 yards rushing.

Several times on Sunday the Chiefs were late running the proper defensive personnel onto the field, and Steve Spagnuolo acknowledged it was an issue on Monday. But he also spoke to referee Shawn Hochuli during the game because the Chiefs defensive coordinator didn't believe Kansas City was getting the appropriate time to make adjustments.

The Chiefs have been waiting for a wide receiver to step up in place of Sammy Watkins, who left in free agency, and take some of the pressure off Hill and tight end Travis Kelce. But Kemp didn't do himself any favors by letting a pass bounce off him for an interception, and Byron Pringle was targeted six times, but had just two catches for 12 yards — and he let a pass go through his hands in the closing seconds that could have given Kansas City a final shot at the end zone.

Assistant coach Dave Toub answered questions following a second straight fourth-quarter letdown.

“Coach just wasn't feeling well,"&nbsp;<a href="https://www.chiefs.com/video/dave-toub-it-s-not-about-effort-we-ve-just-got-to-clean-it-up-week-3-press-confe">Toub said afterward</a>. "He did talk to the team.”

In fact, quarterback Patrick Mahomes said his coach “seemed fine on the sideline as well” as the Chiefs (1-2) threw away an opportunity to beat the Chargers with&nbsp;<a href="https://pro32.ap.org/article/chargers-rally-beat-turnover-prone-chiefs-30-24-kc">four turnovers, several costly penalties and numerous missed assignments</a>.

“He came in and talked to us and he seemed fine,” Mahomes said of the postgame locker room. “That's all I really know.”

The Hornets jumped ahead early on a breakaway opportunity and both teams struggled to find shot opportunities on a very windy day. The Hornets improved to 7-0-1, 1-0 in the MIAA, and the Tigers are now 3-2-3 overall, 0-1 in conference play.

The Hornets found the net in the 10th&nbsp;minute as Mackenzie DiMarco made a fast break with the ball down the middle and placed it into the bottom right of the goal past&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6231">Deonna Wellbrock</a>&nbsp;for the only score of the match. The Hornets outshot the Tigers 8-3 and the Tigers were only able to put one shot in target late in the match. Wellbrock recorded two saves in the match compared to one by the Hornets.

The Tigers will be back in action at home on Friday, October 1 in another MIAA contest as they host Central Oklahoma at 6 pm.

DENVER (AP) — Von Miller led a Denver defense that sacked Zach Wilson five times, intercepted him twice and limited the rookie to 160 yards passing in the Broncos' 26-0 win over the New York Jets on Sunday.

Denver is off to its first 3-0 start in five seasons thanks in part to a soft September schedule. But the victory could prove costly: the Broncos lost three more players to injuries, giving them seven so far.

The Jets (0-3) became the third NFL team to lose a dozen consecutive games in September, joining the 1994-97 Saints and the 2007-10 Rams, who hold the record with 13 consecutive losses in the month.

Alexander Johnson had two of Denver's sacks of Wilson, the second pick in the NFL draft last April. Last week, the Broncos held the top overall selection, Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence, to 118 yards on 14-of-33 passing.

Wilson was 19 of 34 and was picked off by Justin Simmons and Caden Sterns in the fourth quarter. The Jets also turned it over on downs twice.

Teddy Bridgewater completed 76% of his passes — 19 of 25 — for 235 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions.

Offensively, the Broncos got 1-yard TD runs from Melvin Gordon III and rookie Javonte Williams but Williams also fumbled at the 1 and had a mix-up on a handoff from Teddy Bridgewater on another play from the Jets 1.

Broncos guards Dalton Risner (foot) and Graham Glasgow (left knee) and speedy wide receiver K.J. Hamler (left knee) were all injured on a sun-splashed Sunday in front of the first capacity crowd (75,882) since 2019 at Empower Field at Mile High.

A week after throwing four interceptions against the Patriots, Wilson was picked off by Simmons in the waning minutes and also turned it over on downs at the Denver 25-yard line and at his own 41. With 30 seconds left, Sterns picked him off to seal the shutout.

Four of the sacks came in the first half when the Broncos built a 17-0 lead and limited the Jets to just 55 yards, 13 of which came on a run by Ty Johnson just before he and his teammates trudged through the tunnel.

On New York's previous drive, Wilson was sacked by Shelby Harris on first down, pressured into a throwaway pass by a hard-charging Malik Reed on second down and smothered by Miller, who has four sacks so far, on third down.

The Broncos got off to their typical slow start, punting from midfield on their first drive. They've now gone an NFL-long 22 straight games without an opening-drive TD since Drew Lock threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Noah Fant against Houston on Dec. 8, 2019.

Williams scored from a yard on Denver's next drive and Brandon McManus made it 10-0 on the first play of the second quarter. Gordon's 1-yard TD run came with 56 seconds left before halftime.

The Broncos had trouble with their guards on that drive. Glasgow, who missed last week with an irregular heartbeat, had a holding call that wiped out a big run by Gordon and Risner was whistled for taunting the Jets after Gordon bulled his way into the end zone.

Jets cornerback Justin Hardee was flagged for taunting when he jawed at returner Diontae Spencer. The NFL has emphasized taunting this season and had thrown 11 such flags coming into Sunday.

Jets: WR Elijah Moore was evaluated for a head injury and TE Tyler Kroft (chest) went out in the second half.
