HAYS – The TMP-Marian Monarchs softball team earned a doubleheader sweep
of the Ellis Railroaders Tuesday at the Monarchs Softball Complex. The Monarchs (7-3, 4-0 MCL) used an eight-run third inning to take game one 14-2 in run-rule fashion and then rallied
with four runs in the sixth for a 12-11 win in game two.

Game 1: TMP 14, Ellis 2 Ellis got a run in the top of the first inning for a 1-0
lead but the Monarchs bats came alive in the bottom of the second inning.

Karli Komarek singled with two outs in the inning and the
scored two batters later on an error evening the game at one. Madison Augustine
delivered a two-run single in the following at bat but TMP up 3-1, and they
never trailed again.

Ellis got a run back in the top of the third innings, but
Jaci VonLintel connected on a two-run homerun in the bottom of the inning putting
TMP up 5-2. Teagan Gottschalk added two more with a triple and then Augustine
drove in another run for an 8-2 lead on an RBI single.

After back-to-back errors and two straight groundouts the
Monarchs built an 11-2 lead through three innings.

TMP added three more runs on back-to-back errors in the
fourth inning building a 14-2 lead through four innings. 

Augustine earned the win. She allowed just two runs on five
hits with seven strikeouts in five innings. 

Hannah Garcia, Komarek and Augustine each collected a pair
of hits and Augustine added four RBI’s. VonLintel drove in three runs.

GAME 2: TMP 12, Ellis 11 The Monarchs scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth
inning as they rallied for a 12-11 win in the second game of the doubleheader.

The game started with Ellis scoring two runs in the top of
the first and second innings.

Down 4-0, the Monarchs got all four runs back in the bottom of
the second inning.

TMP opened the inning with an Ellis error and a walk. Karli
Komarek drove in the Monarchs first run of the game with an RBI single . TMP added a second run on an error. Sophie Allen’s
two-run homerun tied the game at four in the bottom of the second.

With the game tied at four Ellis scored three in their half
of the third for a 7-4 lead but the Monarchs got two of those runs back in the
bottom of the inning cutting Ellis’ lead 7-6.

Ellis surrendered four straight walks to open the bottom of
the fourth with Jaci VonLintel walking in the game tying run for a 7-7 score. The
Monarchs then took the lead on a passed ball at 8-7 through four innings.

The Railers went back on top scoring three in the top of the sixth for a 10-8
lead.

But the Monarchs answered with four in the bottom of the
inning for a 12-10 lead. 

The inning started with back-to-back hit by pitches and then
TMP loaded the bases with an intentional walk. 

TMP scored on a wild pitch and followed that with a run
scored on an error putting TMP up 12-10.

Ellis got a run back in the top of the seventh but the
Monarchs held on for the 12-11 victory.

Halle Dreiling, Jaci VonLintel and Adison Watson each
collected two hits. Karli Komarek drove in three runs for the Monarchs.

Madison Augustine got the victory. She allowed 11 total
runs, seven earned, on nine hits in six innings with four strikeouts and six
walks.

🥎TMP softball rallies to sweep Ellis

HAYS – The TMP-Marian offense carried the Monarchs (2-4, 2-0
MCL) to their first wins of the season Tuesday as they sweep their MCL rivals
Ellis 7-5 in game one and 16-2 in game two.

GAME 1: TMP 7, Ellis 5 The Railroaders opened the game with a four-run first inning, taking advantage of an error and scoring runs on a wild pitch, a pair of passed
balls and a bases loaded walk.

With Ellis leading 4-0, freshman Cade Dinkel came in with two
outs in the first and stranded a pair runners and then proceed to allow just
one run over the next six innings helping the Monarchs rally for the victory.

Down 4-0, the Monarchs began chipping away at the Ellis
lead, scoring three in the bottom of the first.

Joey Mindrup got the rally started with a one-out single. That was the first of four straight singles for the Monarchs with Kendall Walker driving in a
run and Dinkel adding two more cutting the Ellis lead to 4-3.

Ellis added another run in the second taking a 5-3 lead.

Railer starter Ian McGuire retired 10 straight Monarchs as
Ellis held onto the 5-3 heading into the fifth inning. But that was the inning the Monarchs offense was able to score four runs on three hits taking a
7-5 lead.

After a single by Adler Brown and Ian Nehls reached on an error
Mindrup singled in the first run of the inning. Carson Liles added a sacrifice
fly and then Dinkel added his second two-run single of the game putting TMP up
7-5.

Dinkel picked up his first win of the season. He allowed
just one run on nine hits over six and a third innings.

Mindrup finished two-for-three with two runs scored and an
RBI. 

Game 2: TMP 16, Ellis 2 The Monarchs offensive production continued to play well
into game two, scoring 10 runs in the fourth inning in a 16-2 run-rule victory.

Ellis loaded the bases in the first three innings of game
two against TMP starter Carson Liles but managed just one run over the three
innings while the Monarchs built a 6-1 lead through three innings.

The Monarchs scored four runs in the bottom of the first
inning.

Joey Mindrup opened the inning with a one-out walk, he then
scored on an error. Carson Liles, who reached on the error scored on a Garrett
Feauto RBI single. TMP added two more runs on an error for a 4-0 lead.

Up 4-0 the Monarchs got three straight walks to open the
second inning TMP scored on a wild pitch and added a second run in the inning
on a Caden Dinkel sacrifice fly.

Trailing 6-0, Ellis added single runs in the third and
fourth cutting the TMP lead to 6-2.

Leading by four the Monarchs offense exploded for 10 runs in
the fourth inning. They collected eight singles in the inning while sending 15
to the plate.

Treger Williby, Adler Brown, Kendall Walker, Dinkel and
Feauto all drove in a run with RBI single as the Monarchs secured the 16-2
run-rule victory.

Liles earned the win, his first of the season, with three
innings. He allowed just one run on two hits with a season-high eight
strikeouts and seven walks.

Mindrup scored four runs and Feauto and Dinkel each drove in
a pair of runs.

The Tigers (17-24, 7-17 MIAA) never trailed, taking an early 2-0 lead on an&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/baseball/roster/emile-boies/7253">Emile Boies</a>&nbsp;two-run home run in the bottom of the first. Bebee took care of business on the mound, retiring the first seven batters he faced. The FHSU defense handled its business as well, turning several hard-hit ground balls into routine plays on the infield while the outfield made several catches on the run while battling the wind. Bebee faced the minimum in each of the first four innings, giving up one walk that was promptly erased with a double play. Colby Wilson, Newman's starter, retired 11 consecutive batters over the heart of the contest to give the Jets a chance to strike back, but Bebee was effective enough to hold off the surge. ⚾ Bebee tosses complete game in Tigers win over Newman

JOPLIN, Mo. - The Fort Hays State women's golf team placed 11th at the Dr. Virginia Laas Invitational this week (April 10-11) at Eagle Creek Golf Club, the site of this year's MIAA Women's Golf Championships. The par-72, 6,066-yard course played tough all week, with the field stroke average coming in at 84.2 after three rounds of competition. ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Andrew Heaney tied an AL record by striking out nine consecutive batters, Adolis Garcia’s sixth-inning grand slam was one of three Texas home runs and the Rangers routed the Kansas City Royals 11-2 on Monday night.

Heaney (1-1) began the streak by fanning Matt Duffy and Nicky Lopez to end the first inning, then struck out the side in the second and third innings. After Salvador Perez went down swinging leading off the fourth inning, Matt Duffy ended the streak with a flyout to right field.

Heaney threw 93 pitches and left after five innings, allowing two runs – one earned – on two hits. That after he allowed seven runs and recorded only eight outs last Tuesday in his Texas debut.

“I felt like I owed it to the guys, owed it to the fans, to myself to be better than what I was,” said Heaney, who signed as a free agent in December.

After three of the first four batters reached and resulted in an unearned run, he said, “It all just kind of like started just going. It sort of evolved.”

Heaney matched a record shared by Detroit reliever Tyler Alexander against Cincinnati on Aug. 2, 2020, and Detroit reliever Doug Fister against Kansas City on Sept. 27, 2012.

The major league record for consecutive strikeouts is 10, set by the New York Mets’ Tom Seaver on April 22, 1970, and matched by the Philadelphia Phillies’ Aaron Nola on June 25, 2021, and the Milwaukee Brewers’ Corbin Burnes on Aug. 11, 2021.

“He’s got an interesting delivery,” said first-year Royals manager Matt Quatraro, who returned to action after missing the team’s previous five games with COVID-19. “Low slot, carry guy, so the ball had that rising appearance to it, and it’s tough to lay off. He did a good job, to his credit, pitching at the top of the zone or just above.”

Garcia’s slam capped a seven-run sixth inning and snapped his 0-for-16 slump.

Corey Seager and Jonah Heim also homered off Royals right-hander Zack Greinke (0-3). Greinke gave up four runs, three earned, in five innings.

Hunter Dozier homered for Kansas City in the seventh inning.

Seager had three hits, two off Grienke. Seager is 10 for 24 with four homers off the 2009 AL Cy Young winner.

Major League Baseball has new rules this season that limit the use of position players as pitchers. But Kansas City qualified in the eighth inning, and Quatroro sent right fielder Nate Eaton to the mound for his first pitching appearance since he was VMI’s closer in 2018.

Former New York Yankees star Ron Guidry had nine straight outs that were strikeouts against the Rangers on May 10, 1986. The Rangers’ starter that game was Bobby Witt, father of the Royals’ current shortstop.

soccer team won their second straight game on the newly turfed field at Hays High school Monday. The Indians blanked Junction City 6-0 to move to 6-2 on the season.

Newell scored HHS' first goal in the 11th minute on an assist from Willeford. Willeford then added goals in the 24th and 36th minute with Newell finding the back of the net one minute later for a 4-0 halftime lead.

🎾 HHS 'Gold' wins own invite

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — First-year Kansas City manager Matt Quatraro returned to the dugout for the Royal's game against the Texas Rangers on Monday night after missing the previous five games with COVID-19.

The Royals went 2-3 under interim manager Paul Hoover, their bench coach. Kansas City lost four of its first five games under Quatraro, who left the team one game into a three-game home series against Toronto.

“I missed it,” Quatraro said. “Not everybody gets a break after five days in their career. Poorly timed, but I’m happy to be back.”

Quatraro participated in phases of pregame planning while away, giving Hoover and the other coaches basic instructions. But once the games began, he was just another spectator – a highly interested one.

“It was watch TV and pace around the house,” he said. “Eat too much, probably.”

Quatraro, 49, is a major league manager for the first time. He most recently was the Tampa Bay Rays’ bench coach.

The Royals won two of three at San Francisco over the weekend on the first half of a six-game road trip. That leaves Quatraro one game behind his interim manager in winning percentage.

“He’s way ahead of me,” Quatraro said. “Hopefully I can catch him. I was hoping he got a better lead.”

Quatraro said he felt fine after his bout with COVID-19, sitting out the mandatory minimum according to Major League Baseball. He tested positive last May and missed five Rays games.

 </figure>ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — First-year Kansas City manager Matt Quatraro returned to the dugout for the Royal's game against the Texas Rangers on Monday night after missing the previous five games with COVID-19.The Royals went 2-3 under interim manager Paul Hoover, their bench coach. Kansas City lost four of its first five games under Quatraro, who left the team one game into a three-game home series against Toronto.“I missed it,” Quatraro said. “Not everybody gets a break after five days in their career. Poorly timed, but I’m happy to be back.”Quatraro participated in phases of pregame planning while away, giving Hoover and the other coaches basic instructions. But once the games began, he was just another spectator – a highly interested one.“It was watch TV and pace around the house,” he said. “Eat too much, probably.”Quatraro, 49, is a major league manager for the first time. He most recently was the Tampa Bay Rays’ bench coach.The Royals won two of three at San Francisco over the weekend on the first half of a six-game road trip. That leaves Quatraro one game behind his interim manager in winning percentage.“He’s way ahead of me,” Quatraro said. “Hopefully I can catch him. I was hoping he got a better lead.”Quatraro said he felt fine after his bout with COVID-19, sitting out the mandatory minimum according to Major League Baseball. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Michael Conforto hit a two-run homer off Ryan Yarbrough to cap a three-run rally in the eighth inning that sent the San Francisco Giants to a 3-1 win over the Kansas City Royals on Sunday.

One day after blowing a 4-0 lead in the eighth and losing their second consecutive game to Kansas City, the Giants turned the tables.

Bryce Johnson started the comeback with a one-out single off Yarbrough (0-1). Thairo Estrada flied out before Wilmer Flores doubled in the tying run, with Johnson racing around the bases to score.

“He fired me up from the on-deck circle,” Conforto said. “I’m down there supposed to tell him which way to slide, so I had a great view of it. It’s just an incredible play. Just an all-around great inning sets it up for me to have that at-bat. I just kept it simple.”

Conforto then drilled a 72 mph curveball over the right-center wall for his third homer since signing with San Francisco as a free agent in January. The outfielder sat out last season while recovering from shoulder surgery.

“I think one of the contributions that nobody sees is the calm presence that (Conforto) is,” Giants manager Gabe Kapler said. “He’s had some struggles early in the season. We were talking about potentially giving him a day off today. But his contributions have been professional and calm and measured. He understands that this is a really long season and you’re going to go through stretches of games where you don’t necessarily get the big hit. A moment like this was inevitable coming for Michael, and glad he had a big one for us today.”

It was Conforto's 28th career homer off a left-hander — he's hit 107 against righties. He began the day with a .225 career batting average vs. lefties.

“I’ve been working really hard on just keeping my shoulder in against lefties,” Conforto said. “I’ve been a little uncomfortable against them and that was just kind of the culmination of some work. Just the reaction from my teammates, the fans, was great.”

John Brebbia (1-0) retired one batter in relief for the win. Tyler Rogers worked the ninth for his first save.

Until the eighth, the Royals appeared well on their way to completing the series sweep.

Kris Bubic was dazzling in his second start of the season for Kansas City, matching his career high of nine strikeouts in six innings. He retired 10 straight after hitting Conforto, the No. 3 batter, with a pitch in the first inning.

Bubic didn’t allow a hit until David Villar’s leadoff single in the fifth. He worked out of a two-on, two-out jam in the same inning and set down his final four hitters.

Kansas City backed him with steady relief until the Giants tied it.

The Royals again were kept mostly quiet on offense but broke through for a run against Giants starter Anthony DeSclafani in the fourth. Vinnie Pasquantino hit a two-out double and scored on Salvador Perez’s single.

A day earlier, Perez hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning to spark Kansas City’s 6-5 victory after being down 4-0.

DeSclafani, unbeaten in his past 11 appearances against American League teams, had seven strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings. He allowed three hits and walked none.

The Giants optioned INF Matt Beaty to Triple-A Sacramento and recalled OF Heliot Ramos, who started in left field and batted eighth.

Giants: C Gary Sánchez could be back in the big leagues soon. San Francisco’s depth at catcher is being tested with Roberto Perez (strained shoulder) on the 60-day injured list and Joey Bart (mid-back strain) on a rehab assignment. Sánchez was the DH at Triple-A Sacramento in his season debut Saturday and went 1 for 4 with a two-run single and two strikeouts.

Royals: RHP Zack Greinke (0-2, 2.38 ERA) pitches Monday at Texas.

Giants: RHP Logan Webb (0-2, 6.55 ERA) faces Dodgers LHP Julio Urías (2-0, 1.50) on Monday in San Francisco’s first game against a National League team this season.

WICHITA, Kan. - The Fort Hays State track and field team saw one school record go down and added two more national qualifying marks on day two of the KT Woodman Classic hosted by Wichita State on Saturday. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-track-and-field/roster/ryan-stanley/7194">Ryan Stanley</a>&nbsp;set an outdoor personal-best and broke the outdoor school record in the pole vault, clearing the bar at 17-3.5 to win by more than 1.5 feet. He then pushed the bar one-half inch above the former school record and cleared it on his first attempt.  </figure>FHSU AthleticsWICHITA, Kan. - The Fort Hays State track and field team saw one school record go down and added two more national qualifying marks on day two of the KT Woodman Classic hosted by Wichita State on Saturday. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-track-and-field/roster/ryan-stanley/7194">Ryan Stanley</a>&nbsp;set an outdoor personal-best and broke the outdoor school record in the pole vault, clearing the bar at 17-3.5 to win by more than 1.5 feet. The senior entered the competition at 16-2.75, where he was the only successful jumper remaining in the competition. He then pushed the bar one-half inch above the former school record and cleared it on his first attempt. 👟 Stanley breaks FHSU outdoor pole vault record

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Salvador Pérez hit a tying, three-run homer in the eighth inning and Nate Eaton scored on a wild pitch in the ninth as the Kansas City Royals rallied past the San Francisco Giants 6-5 on Saturday.

Eaton pinch-ran for Vinnie Pasquantino, who led off the ninth with a double off Giants closer Camilo Doval. Eaton advanced to third on a ground out by Hunter Dozier and sprinted to the plate on a wild pitch by Doval (0-1), barely beating the tag by catcher Blake Sabol with a head-first slide.

With Kansas City trailing 5-1 in the seventh, Franmil Reyes homered off Ross Stripling to cut the lead to 3. Pérez tied the game with a three-run blast off Stripling in the eighth.

The Giants loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the inning, but Royals reliever Taylor Clarke (1-0) struck out Thairo Estrada, Brandon Crawford and Sabol to keep the game tied.

Aroldis Chapman pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his first save with the Royals.

Bobby Witt Jr. also homered for Kansas City, which clinched its first series victory of the season. The Royals improved to 2-2 under bench coach Paul Hoover, who has served as interim manager while Matt Quatraro has been away from the team with COVID-19.

LaMonte Wade Jr. homered into McCovey Cove for the Giants’ 98th Splash Hit in Oracle Park history.

Brandon Crawford added two RBI singles for San Francisco, which has lost its first two home games for the first time since 2015. Thairo Estrada and Joc Pederson also drove in runs.

Sean Manaea pitched six dominant innings in his first start with the Giants, limiting Kansas City to one run and three hits with eight strikeouts, but did not factor into the decision.

Manaea and Sabol formed the first Samoan starting battery in MLB history. Sabol, whose mother was born in Samoa, is a second cousin of Pro Football Hall of Famer Troy Polamalu. Manaea’s father was born in American Samoa.

The Giants signed 1B/OF Darin Ruf to a minor league contract, reuniting him with his former franchise. “We love Darin, and obviously, we have a lot of familiarity with him around here,” Giants manager Gabe Kapler said. “We think the world of him as a human being. He performed very well for us for the time that he was in San Francisco.” Ruf, 36, spent parts of three seasons with San Francisco from 2020-22, batting .248 with 32 home runs in 247 games. He was dealt to the Mets last season, where he hit just .152. New York released Ruf on April 2.

Giants: C Roberto Pérez, who left Friday’s game after feeling shoulder pain, was placed on the 60-day injured list with a right rotator cuff strain. Austin Wynns was selected from Triple-A Sacramento to replace him on the roster. ... C Joey Bart (back strain) began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Sacramento. He was scheduled to catch six innings Saturday night.

Bay Area native LHP Kris Bubic (0-1, 3.60 ERA) returns home to start the series finale Sunday for Kansas City. Bubic attended Archbishop Mitty High School in San Jose and pitched for Stanford. The Giants counter with RHP Anthony DeSclafani (1-0, 0.00), who tossed six scoreless innings against the White Sox in his season debut Monday.

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – The Fort Hays State baseball team fell in the rubber match against Northeastern State 12-0 on Saturday. The Tigers struggled to find on offensive rhythm while the RiverHawks scored at least one run in every frame. FHSU falls to 16-24 overall and 6-17 in the MIAA while NSU improves to 16-19 overall and 10-13 in conference action.

NSU hit a solo home run with two outs in the first inning to take the lead before blowing the game open in the second. The Tigers took game one 2-1 before the Ichabods rallied for a 4-3 win in extra innings of the second contest. 

FHSU moved to 25-14 overall, 7-5 in the MIAA, while Washburn moved to 30-8 overall, 9-5 in the MIAA. Game 1: Fort Hays State 2, Washburn 1 Bailey Carlson&nbsp;outdueled Jaycee Ginter in the pitching circle in the first contest. Carlson held the Ichabods scoreless through six innings, while the offense netted her a pair of runs in the sixth and seventh innings. The Ichabods scored their only run of the game with two outs in the seventh when Ginter broke up the shutout bid with an RBI single up the middle, but Carlson shut the door by winning a long 10-pitch battle against Jaden LaBarge. She got LaBarge to fly out to right field, stranding runners at first and second as the Tigers held on for the 2-1 win. A crafty Carlson navigated runners in scoring position every inning, while limiting the Ichabods to just six hits in the game. The Tiger defense was air tight for her, since she had only one strikeout in the game. Carlson worked around a runner getting to third base with two outs in each of the first two innings. She stole second, moved up to third on a wild pitch, then came in to score on a Loren Beggs&nbsp;double. The Tigers had runners at second and third with two outs, but they were stranded on a strikeout. Washburn leveled the score in the third when a weak contact dribbler to the right side turned into a single with one out. Hadley Kerschen, who went 3-for-4 in the game for Washburn, flared a ball into left center to tie the game, but Tiger starter Savanah Egger&nbsp;shut down any further rally by getting out of a bases loaded jam. The Tigers immediately jumped back in front in the top of the fourth as Carly Stuke&nbsp;doubled to lead off the inning. Madison Pierce&nbsp;put down a sacrifice bunt to move her over to third and then Lillian Ramirez-Johnson&nbsp;roped a single into left field to plate Stuke. The Tigers were able to load the bases with just one out, but once again stubbed their toe with a strikeout and fielder's choice grounder to leave more crucial runs on the paths.

Regan Curry&nbsp;started a one-out rally for the Tigers in the fifth with a single. That chased Washburn starter Sadie Walker from the game, who went 4.1 innings and was charged with all three Tiger runs. Sheyenne Cheek took over in the circle and yielded two straight hits to the Tigers, a Stuke single and then a Pierce double down the right field line to plate Curry. But once again with one out, the Tigers left valuable runs on the paths. A strikeout helped the Washburn cause before Adysen Burghart&nbsp;was hit by a pitch to load the bases. But, the Tigers could not find a timely two-out hit, grounding out to end the inning. The Ichabods were able to come up with timely two-out hits late in the game that allowed them to escape a potential sweep by the Tigers. Washburn led off the sixth with a double and a well-place flare down the right field line for a triple brought the score to 3-2. A leadoff walk in the seventh was costly for the Tigers as she made it to third base with one out. Jaycee Ginter knocked the tying run home on a sacrifice fly RBI to left field. The runner was ruled safe at the dish, just barely getting to the plate before the tag applied by Pierce in the eyes of the home plate umpire. In the eighth, a one out double eventually set up a walk-off two-out double by Erin Boles over the head of right fielder Peyton Shepard. Egger moved to 11-6 on the season with the loss in a complete-game effort. She notched six strikeouts in the game. Ginter, who entered in the seventh and held the Tigers scoreless over the final two innings, picked up the win. FHSU went into the sixth inning with a 3-1 lead, only to see Washburn rally with single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to tie the game, then another run in the eighth for the win.Peyton Shepard&nbsp;helped get the Tigers get out in front right way with a leadoff single in the first. She stole second, moved up to third on a wild pitch, then came in to score on a Loren Beggs&nbsp;double. The Tigers had runners at second and third with two outs, but they were stranded on a strikeout. Washburn leveled the score in the third when a weak contact dribbler to the right side turned into a single with one out. Hadley Kerschen, who went 3-for-4 in the game for Washburn, flared a ball into left center to tie the game, but Tiger starter Savanah Egger&nbsp;shut down any further rally by getting out of a bases loaded jam. The Tigers immediately jumped back in front in the top of the fourth as Carly Stuke&nbsp;doubled to lead off the inning. Madison Pierce&nbsp;put down a sacrifice bunt to move her over to third and then Lillian Ramirez-Johnson&nbsp;roped a single into left field to plate Stuke. The Tigers were able to load the bases with just one out, but once again stubbed their toe with a strikeout and fielder's choice grounder to leave more crucial runs on the paths.Regan Curry&nbsp;started a one-out rally for the Tigers in the fifth with a single. That chased Washburn starter Sadie Walker from the game, who went 4.1 innings and was charged with all three Tiger runs. Sheyenne Cheek took over in the circle and yielded two straight hits to the Tigers, a Stuke single and then a Pierce double down the right field line to plate Curry. But once again with one out, the Tigers left valuable runs on the paths. A strikeout helped the Washburn cause before Adysen Burghart&nbsp;was hit by a pitch to load the bases. But, the Tigers could not find a timely two-out hit, grounding out to end the inning. The Ichabods were able to come up with timely two-out hits late in the game that allowed them to escape a potential sweep by the Tigers. Washburn led off the sixth with a double and a well-place flare down the right field line for a triple brought the score to 3-2. A leadoff walk in the seventh was costly for the Tigers as she made it to third base with one out. Jaycee Ginter knocked the tying run home on a sacrifice fly RBI to left field. The runner was ruled safe at the dish, just barely getting to the plate before the tag applied by Pierce in the eyes of the home plate umpire. In the eighth, a one out double eventually set up a walk-off two-out double by Erin Boles over the head of right fielder Peyton Shepard. Egger moved to 11-6 on the season with the loss in a complete-game effort. She notched six strikeouts in the game. Ginter, who entered in the seventh and held the Tigers scoreless over the final two innings, picked up the win. The Tigers look for more success on Saturday in another key MIAA matchup at Emporia State. 👟 Two national qualifying marks for Tigers at KT Woodman Classic

GARDEN CITY - The Hays High baseball team did most of their scoring in two innings but it was enough for a doubleheader sweep over Garden City Friday at Clint Lightner Field. The Indians won the opener 5-0 then took game two 11-3 to improve to 4-0 on the season.

HHS travels to rival Great Bend for a doubleheader Tuesday.

Game 1: Hays 5, Garden City 0 The Indians scored four runs in the top of the seventh to break open a 1-run game. Bradyn Dreher's two-out double drove in the final two runs.

Cooper Sanders and Carson Spray both had two hits. Spray homered in the second inning to give the Indians a 1-0 lead. He also doubled to open the seventh.

Greg Hughes pitched a gem. The senior held the Buffaloes to three hits in a complete game shutout with nine strikeouts and three walks.&nbsp;

Game 2: Hays 11, Garden City 3 Hays scored eight runs in the first, five of them on wild pitches. They added two more in the second on a wild pitch and fielders choice.

Carson Spray had two hits. Gage Porter had a double and Bradyn Dreher a triple.

Tanner Boxberger pitched 3 1/3 scoreless innings of relief and picked up the win. Carter Graham pitched the final three innings without allowing a hit and striking out five.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Vinnie Pasquantino hit his first home run of the season leading off the fourth, Salvador Perez connected in the eighth for his first of 2023 and a key insurance run, and the Kansas City Royals spoiled San Francisco's home opener Friday by beating the Giants 3-1.

Nicky Lopez added an RBI single as the Royals backed right-hander Brad Keller (1-1) in just the second win so far for Kansas City, which had lost three straight and went 1-6 at home for just the second time beginning a season. Bench coach Paul Hoover is guiding the Royals with manager Matt Quatraro out after testing positive for COVID-19.

Blake Sabol hit an RBI single for San Francisco on what began as a rainy start to the day at Oracle Park. The tarp went on overnight but came off about 10 a.m. and both teams were able to work out on the field before the game after long travel days Thursday.

Giants right-hander Alex Cobb (0-1) struck out six over seven sharp innings but he didn't get enough run support from a club that was leading the majors with 15 home runs to start the day.

In his first career start against San Francisco — which has yet to face a National League opponent given the new schedule format — Keller struck out three and walked three while allowing three hits over 5 2/3 innings. Aroldis Chapman pitched the eighth and Scott Barlow surrendered a leadoff triple to Joc Pederson in the ninth before finishing for his first save after a career-best 24 last year.

Former Giants third baseman Matt Duffy received a warm ovation during pregame introductions and singled for the Royals before making a sensational catch on Thairo Estrada’s sharp line drive for the second out in the ninth to save a run.

The Giants dropped to 40-26 in home openers since moving West from New York in 1958, including 16-8 in their waterfront ballpark that opened in 2000.

Longtime Giants equipment manager Mike Murphy, who just retired, threw out the ceremonial first pitch to Brandon Crawford, while newly retired reliever Sergio Romo announced “Play Ball!” to wild applause.

Giants: Roberto Pérez left the game with a right shoulder strain. ... SS Crawford, who dealt with discomfort in his left knee during spring training, was better and in the lineup but manager Gabe Kapler said he's “not sure Craw will ever be 100%.” ...
