ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — Missouri Western State University President Elizabeth Kennedy
says Chiefs Training Camp is going well on the St. Joseph campus.

“We have had record crowds,” Kennedy tells host Barry Birr on
the KFEQ Hotline. “In fact, the last couple of camp (days), I understand, the
Chiefs actually sold out. So, we’re talking on the Sunday Family Fun Day, we
had 7,000 tickets that were secured by a guest that came with their families.”

Training camp is back to normal after being canceled two years
ago and being held under coronavirus restrictions last year.

Kennedy says there is a reason the Chiefs cap attendance at
7,000. Kennedy says that, to the Chiefs, it’s all about the fans.

“So, they don’t want a crowd so big that nobody’s going to get
an autograph, nobody’s going to have that unique experience, because every fan
that comes to camp then walks away and has a story and they want, the Chiefs
want, that story to be the best story about their experience and so do we at
Missouri Western.”

Kennedy says the experience this year is in stark contrast to
the last two years.

“I think everyone was kind of holding their breath to say what
is this year going to look like?” Kennedy says. “Now that we kind of have COVID
at least tampered down a bit, it’s been fabulous. It really has been fun.”

Missouri Western wants to continue to be the home of Chiefs
Training Camp. This is the final guaranteed year of the five-year contract
Missouri Western signed with the Chiefs. There are two optional years in the
contract. Kennedy says the university will officially begin negotiations with
the Chiefs about exercising those two optional years in March.

“Which seems like a long way off,” Kennedy says. “But we’ve
already been working behind the scenes to kind of talk about other partners in
our community, because it can’t just be Missouri Western making sure that the
Chiefs understand how important their coming to St. Joseph is.”

Being the home of the Chiefs Training Camp could open other
opportunities for Missouri Western, such as being host to some world-class
soccer.

Kennedy says Missouri Western joined with Kansas City’s bid to
host some of the World Cup games in 2026.

“They’ll be looking for regional training sites and when
Kansas City put in their packet to FIFA about offering this, we also were part
of that application as being willing to host a country - which is kind of
interesting – but a country for a practice area.”

Kansas City is a host site when the World Cup comes to the
United States in 2026.

🏈 'Record crowds' at 2022 Chiefs training camp

HAYS - After receiving first team All-America accolades from
just about every outlet and publication, Fort Hays State tight end Hunter Budke
is looking for even better things in 2022. 

The Beloit product was named
All-America First Team by the American Football Coaches Association, the
Division II Conference Commissioners Association and Don Hansen and was named a
D2Football.com Elite 100 First Team selection but as he prepares for the
upcoming season, Budke said he’s trying to not think about any of that.

“At the end of the day I just want to win games” Budke said. “All
of the personal accolades I feel like take care of themselves when you compete
and do everything right. More than any thing I just want to win games and a
conference championship this year.”

2022 will be the sixth season for Budke wearing a Tiger
uniform. After redshirting his freshman year in 2017 Budke has played in 34
games with 57 career receptions for 725 yards and 11 touchdowns. His breakout season
came in 2021 when he had 47 catches for 620 yards and eight touchdowns.

And even though he had one more year of eligibility remaining due
to the lost season in 2020 due to COVID-19, Budke says his return wasn’t a slam
dunk.

“I’d graduated and ultimately, I decided it was in my best
interest to come back and play another year. I feel like we had some unfinished
business left out there last year, so ultimately, I put my career on hold and
decided to come back and play another year.” Budke said.

With all of the accolades from last season, Budke is sure to
get some looks from NFL scouts this fall. He says a chance at making an NFL team
would be a dream come true.

“That’s a goal of mine to make it to the next level, but right
now I’m just focused on the season. (I’m) Just taking it day by day, trying to
get better at my weaknesses. Ultimately I feel if you play hard and do things
right all of that stuff will come along with it.”

As for weaknesses, Budke says there’s plenty for him to
improve on as the Tigers prepare for the upcoming season.

“I just want to get better in the run blocking game, I feel I
can be more aggressive, more physical, I can take better steps. Yards after
catch. Whenever I make a catch, I need to pick up more yards. Contested
catches. Just going up and making that play whenever my number is called.”

FHSU is coming off a 5-6 season in 2021, their first losing campaign
since 2012, but Budke thinks things will be different this year.

“I think our offensive line is as good as it’s ever been since
I’ve been here. We have a very experienced, veteran group across the board with
receivers, running backs, tight ends, offensive and I feel like we can do great
things in the run and the pass game.” Budke said.

“I think it’s just doing the little things correctly. It all
matters in the game of football. Everything and everything you do outside of football
matters as well. I feel like we’ve come closer together as a team this year and
we’re working harder than we ever have. “

Budke and the Tigers continue with their preseason camp at Lewis
Field. The Tigers open their season at Northwest Missouri State on Thursday,
September 1st. They play their first home game one week later on September 7th
vs. Missouri Western State.

🏈 FHSU's Budke looking to follow up 2021 success

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — MJ Melendez hit a tiebreaking homer in the seventh inning to send the Kansas City Royals past the Chicago White Sox 8-3 on Wednesday night.

Melendez and Salvador Perez both had three hits and two RBIs for the Royals. Kyle Isbel drove in two runs and scored twice.

“Dropping down two and then answering right back, that’s really what we’re seeing from this group,” Royals manager Mike Matheny said. “If something happens they just keep coming.”

After leading all minor leaguers with 41 home runs last year, Melendez has 14 in 81 big league games this season. The left-handed-hitting rookie sent a pitch from lefty reliever Jake Diekman (5-2) into the right-field bullpen to give Kansas City a 4-3 lead.

“That whole at-bat I was waiting for that hanging slider,” Melendez said. “Obviously his fastball is very good. I was just trying to do some damage. I got a good pitch to hit.

“When I hit it, I kind of knew (it was out), but here at Kauffman you never really know. Once it finally landed, I was super pumped up.”

Isbel hit a two-run single in the eighth and scored on Melendez's single. Perez added an RBI single to make it 8-3.

Josh Staumont (3-1) worked a perfect seventh for the win.

Royals starter Kris Bubic allowed three runs (one earned) and seven hits in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out six and walked three. He skirted trouble in every inning until the sixth, when Chicago touched him for three runs.

White Sox right-hander Johnny Cueto permitted three runs (two earned) and nine hits in six innings.

Bubic escaped a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the second. He got Gavin Sheets to line out to shallow left field and struck out Lenyn Sosa to end the inning.

“Pretty much throughout the outing I felt like we were in control of things,” Bubic said, giving credit to his catcher, Perez. “The fastball was as good as it’s been all year, and the curveball was good as well. I didn’t throw that many changeups.

“I was just throwing what was being put down. He knows what they’re looking for, so we went heavy fastball and curveball.”

The Royals scored in the third on a two-out single by Bobby Witt Jr. after Isbel ripped a one-out double past first baseman Jose Abreu.

The White Sox finally got to Bubic in the sixth. Once again, he loaded the bases with one out. Sheets hit another line drive, and second baseman Michael Massey couldn’t handle it. The error scored two runs.

Josh Harrison then drove in Yasmani Grandal with a two-out single, and Bubic’s night was over.

The Royals came back to tie it 3-all in the bottom half. Witt legged out an infield single leading off and scored on Perez's double to right-center. Perez advanced to third on an error by third baseman Yoan Moncado and scored on a two-out single by Massey.

“Anything to help the team win,” Massey said. “Obviously I wanted to make that play in the top of the sixth. I just missed it. To be able to come up big in the next inning felt really good.”

Chicago OF AJ Pollock was out of the lineup after fouling a ball off his foot Tuesday. White Sox manager Tony La Russa said it was precautionary. “His foot is sore, but he’ll be in the lineup and hit first tomorrow,” La Russa said.

Kansas City OF Brent Rooker was recalled from Triple-A Omaha. In a corresponding move, C Sebastian Rivero was optioned to Double-A Northwest Arkansas.

The teams conclude their four-game series Thursday afternoon. RHP Dylan Cease (12-4, 1.98 ERA) will start for the White Sox against RHP Zack Greinke (3-7, 4.58).

HAYS - As the Fort Hays State football team continues their preseason
camp, senior quarterback Chance Fuller is trying to savor every moment.

The Arlington, Texas native known for his long-flowing red hair
begins his sixth season at FHSU. After redshirting in 2017, Fuller made his
first start in the next-to-last regular season game at Northwest Missouri State
and helped guide the Tigers to the 17-16 win and their second-consecutive MIAA
title. Fuller has played in 32 games as a Tiger and said he’s exactly where he
wants to be, on the field with his teammates.

“We’re just excited to be together as a team just back on the
field doing what we love to do, competing and trying to get better every day.” Fuller
said.

Fuller has twice been named Second Team All-MIAA (2019, 2021)
and has thrown more touchdown passes (64) than any other FHSU signal caller and
he’s glad to have one of his top targets back from injury in fellow senior wide
receiver Manny Ramsey.

“Glad to have Manny back. Have been here with him since I came
in here but the new guys and the returners, it feels good, we worked hard this
summer, worked hard with the new guys. We’re getting there.” 

The Tigers finished 5-6 in 2021, their first losing season since
2012. Fuller says they’re doing all they can to not let that happen again this
season.

“I think it’s just a little move of everything, a little more
hard work, a little move leadership everywhere, a little more grit, just
getting down and dirty” Fuller said. “It wasn’t an acceptable year for us so we’ve
got to be better this year.”

Fuller holds the Tiger record for completions and passing yards
in a single-game as well as touchdown passes in a season and says he’s trying
to be a better leader, something which hasn’t always come naturally for him.

“I’d say I’m more of a lead by example guy but trying to be
more vocal as I go. Hold people accountable, hold myself accountable and getting
this team where I want it to be and where I think it can be.”

Fuller and the Tigers open the 2022 season at Northwest Missouri
State on Thursday, September 1.

🏈 Fuller eager to lead Tigers back to winning ways

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Lenyn Sosa hit his first major league home run and Yoan Moncada also connected as the Chicago White Sox, minus injured All-Star shortstop Tim Anderson, beat the Kansas City Royals 3-2 Tuesday night to split a doubleheader.

The Royals won the first game 4-2. Vinnie Pasquantino homered in both games for Kansas City.

Anderson was injured on a check swing during his last at-bat on Saturday night at Texas. He will have surgery on Thursday in Chicago.

The 29-year-old Anderson is hitting .301 for the playoff-contending White Sox. He missed the opener while finishing up a two-game suspension for making contact with an umpire.

“The way it was described to me, we expect to have him play before the season is over,” Chicago manager Tony La Russa said. “It’s up to us to keep winning games so when he gets back we’re contending."

“When anybody gets hurt (it’s tough), but the kind of player he is and what he means to the club, it’ a really tough break," he said.

Davis Martin (2-3) picked up the victory in the nightcap after being called up as the 27th man for the doubleheader. He allowed one run on three hits in 5.2 innings.

Liam Hendriks earned his 23rd save in 26 opportunities.

Jonathan Heasley (1-7), who was called up as the 27th man for the Royals, allowed two solo home runs in 5.1 innings. He walked one and struck out five.

Sosa, who made his big league debut in June, gave the White Sox a 1-0 lead in the third when he hit a curveball into the water fountains in left center.

“I was expecting a fastball,” Sosa said through an interpreter. “When I saw that pitch, I was able to react and hit the ball hard. It was a curveball.”

Pasquantino became the 13th different Royals player to homer in both games of a doubleheader when he connected in the fourth.

Moncada homered in the sixth for a 2-1 lead.

Gavin Sheets had an RBI double in the Chicago eighth. The Royals got within a run on Nick Pratto’s sacrifice fly in the ninth.

Eloy Jimenez had three hits and a walk for the White Sox.

The Royals got a solid performance from Brady Singer (5-4) in the first game. He allowed one run in 7.1 innings.

Pratto homered, doubled and singled in the win.

“Brady was very good,” Kansas City manager Mike Matheny said. “I thought that was maybe his best sinker of the year. You see that many good hitters take called strikes that they’re questioning, it had movement they’re not accustomed to. Then he played off of that with the slider.”

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Minus injured All-Star shortstop Tim Anderson, the Chicago White Sox fell to rookie Nick Pratto and the Kansas City Royals 4-2 Tuesday in the first game of a doubleheader.

Anderson is expected to miss six weeks with a tear in the middle finger of his left hand. He was put on the 10-day injured list between games of the twinbill.

"Huge blow. He's one of our All-Stars and one of our leaders," losing pitcher Lance Lynn said.

Anderson, who is hitting .301 for the playoff-contending White Sox, didn't play while finishing up a two-game suspension for making contact with an umpire.

Pratto homered, doubled and singled. He began the day batting .186 (11 for 59) this season in 19 games. His third homer put the Royals ahead 4-1 in the sixth.

Brady Singer (5-4) allowed one run on five hits in 7.1 innings. He struck out six without walking anyone.

Jose Cuas picked up his first career save.

Lynn (2-5) allowed two-run homers by Pratto and Vinnie Pasquantino in six innings.

⚾ Pasquantino, Pratto homer in Royals win over White Sox

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — The Kansas City Chiefs had ideal conditions for a two-hour, fully padded practice Tuesday.

The
 Chiefs practiced under sunny skies with temperatures right around 70 to
 start the day. The best news of the day for the team was the return of 
corner Rashad Fenton to the practice field.

Fenton 
received shoulder surgery in the offseason and was inactive for OTAs and
 mandatory minicamp, and he was on the physically unable to perform list
 for the first 11 camp practices.

Now that he's back on the field, Chiefs defensive backs coach Dave Merritt says Fenton will slowly be reacclimated.

"He'll
 get a couple of the one-on-one (drills) and after that, we'll just 
continue to matriculate into all of the other periods," Merritt said. 
"It's been great having him back and he's been great in the classroom 
for us."

Fenton appeared in 14 games and started eight of them 
last year, recording seven pass deflections and 49 total tackles. He 
joins a stacked room of talent, including rookie corner Trent McDuffie 
and third-year pro L'Jarius Sneed, who Fenton played behind last season.

With
 Charvarius Ward no longer on the team, Fenton will likely play a key 
role in the defensive backfield, but he certainly has competition. 
Rookies Jaylen Watson and Joshua Williams are also competing for time.

Many
 of Andy Reid’s assistants and support staff took to the podium 
following Tuesday’s practice. Back on the staff this year is Matt Nagy -
 senior offensive assistant and quarterbacks coach.

He was 
formerly the offensive coordinator in Kansas City from 2013-2017 and 
then head coach of the Chicago Bears from 2018-2021 before getting fired
 in February.

Being back in KC, Nagy says it’s been great getting 
reacquainted, and he credited Reid, Eric Bieniemy, Patrick Mahomes and 
general manager Brett Veach for the success they’ve had since he’s been 
gone.

"We work together and we help each other out," Nagy said. 
"There's zero egos. It is kind of like riding a bicycle, but at the 
point in time, we're all in this for one reason. Zero egos and we're 
here to win. That's it."

Nagy was brought back to the Chiefs in 
February, filling the shoes of Mike Kafka, who left to be offensive 
coordinator for the Giants.

"The last four years of me not being 
here and what Coach Reid, Veach, Patrick and (Bieniemy) and the rest of 
this group has done is nothing short of amazing," Nagy commented. "We 
had a lot of good times up to that point and now I'm back. I appreciate 
that and it means a lot to me."

The
 Chiefs added 50 new players to their roster this offseason, and those 
newcomers are trying to find their way onto the 53-man active roster.


 Chiefs assistant general manager Mike Borgonzi is in his 14th year with
 the team. He says camp is always exciting, but he’s eager to see these 
new players get their first in-game experience on Saturday during the 
preseason game in Chicago.

"Excited about this weekend," Borgonzi 
said. "Another exciting opportunity for these guys to come out and 
showcase what they can do and compete. Great opportunity for us to kind 
of evaluate them in game conditions now."

The Chiefs play at the 
Bears this Saturday at noon central - the first of three preseason games
 Kansas City will play this month.

Several Chiefs rookies have had
 productive camps. Running back Isiah Pacheco and receiver Skyy Moore 
probably top the list, but the aforementioned McDuffie and Joshua 
Williams are certainly there.

 Borgonzi also mentioned seventh-round pick and corner Jaylen Watson as someone making an impact.

"Watson
 is a bigger corner who can run," he said. "Even (rookie safety) Nazeeh 
(Johnson) is somebody who ran a (4.35-second 40-yard dash). They have 
these traits. When you're looking for those traits, what's the 
characteristics that's going to make them work? They all kind of have 
that. They all tried to get better every year in college."

Pacheco - confirmed kick returner. McDuffie punt returner?

Special
 teams coach Dave Toub mentioned about a week ago that Pacheco would be 
the starting kick returner for the Chiefs' first preseason game, and he 
reaffirmed that decision Tuesday, with that first game now just four 
days away.

"We're going to give him every chance to be that guy," 
Toub said of Pacheco. "I just think he has all of the attributes of 
being a good kick returner and he's gotten better and better at 
practice. He's doing little things better, he's catching the ball 
great."

At punt return, Mecole Hardman has been taking reps at 
that spot. He's been the go-to guy there for the past three seasons. 
Toub likes Moore and McDuffie back there as well.

"McDuffie is the best punt catcher we have," Toub remarked.

Justin Reid as backup kicker? Maybe one day.

Justin Reid went viral when he knocked through a 65-yard field goal after practice on Sunday.

Toward the end of a special teams session Tuesday, Toub decided to let Reid try again. This time, from about 52 yards. It was well short and shanked to the left.

"I
 wanted to surprise (Reid)," Toub said. "I saw him hanging out. He's 
always hanging out at the field goal drill. So, I wanted to surprise him
 and see how he would handle it. I don't think we found our backup 
kicker yet. But, he has a strong leg so we'll keep seeing what he can 
do."

The one new injury to report 
Tuesday is that of defensive back Zayne Anderson, who left practice 
around 9:30 a.m. It was later disclosed that he has a shoulder injury. 
No word yet on how serious.

Receiver Daurice Fountain (groin), 
tight end Jody Forston (quad), defensive tackle Taylor Stallworth (knee)
 and receiver Gary Jennings (concussion) did not practice Tuesday. 
Offensive lineman Lucas Niang (knee) is still on the PUP list.

The Chiefs have the day off from practice Wednesday, will be back Thursday and then travel to Chicago Friday.

The team practices Monday - Thursday of next week, with August 18 being the last day of camp.

🎥 Chiefs assistants give update on camp after Tuesday practice

Vin Scully, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2022/08/02/sports/baseball/vin-scully-dead.html">who died on Aug. 2, 2022</a>,
 is widely viewed as the greatest baseball announcer of all time. But 
for an earlier generation, his mentor, Red Barber, held that 
distinction.

In our recent biography “<a href="https://www.google.com/books/edition/Red_Barber/lWhgEAAAQBAJ?hl=en&amp;gbpv=0">Red Barber: The Life and Legacy of a Broadcasting Legend</a>,”
 we uncovered moving private letters and public references documenting 
the rich personal bonds between these two great voices of the game.

In 1939, Barber brought daily radio broadcasts of Dodgers baseball to
 Brooklyn’s fans for the first time. By the time Scully arrived in 1950,
 Barber – known as “<a href="https://archive.seattletimes.com/archive/?date=19921022&amp;slug=1520043">the Old Redhead</a>” – was the toast of Flatbush.

For a combined century – 33 years for Barber and 67 for Scully – the 
two blessed baseball fans with some of the sharpest word pictures ever 
painted of the grand old game. Together in the Brooklyn booth for four 
crucial years, from 1950 to 1953, they forged a relationship that proved
 to be both demanding and gratifying.

After Scully graduated with a degree in English from Fordham 
University in 1949, he papered East Coast radio stations with 
applications. <a href="https://vault.si.com/vault/1964/05/04/the-transistor-kid">He eventually scored an interview with CBS Radio</a>, where Barber was director of sports. Barber came away impressed, but there were no openings at the time.

Barber later phoned Vin Scully when, at the last minute, he needed a 
reporter to cover a college football contest at Fenway Park in Boston 
for CBS College Football Roundup. Scully’s mother answered the phone and
 took the message for Vin that <a href="https://www.google.com/books/edition/Voices_of_the_Game/oNBwQgAACAAJ?hl=en">“Red Skelton” wanted to talk to him about a job</a> – confusing Barber with <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Skelton">the popular entertainer</a>.

Fortunately, Scully figured out who was calling. He hustled to the 
park, only to learn there was no room for him in the press box. With 
only a light topcoat to defend himself against the cruel New England 
elements, he had to call the entire game from the roof, braving the 
winds on a chilly fall day with only a 60-watt light bulb to warm his 
hands. Barber, initially unaware of Scully’s plight, later wrote that 
when he learned his announcer had called the game from the roof, he was 
impressed by the young broadcaster’s stamina and even more impressed 
that Scully had never complained about the brutal conditions.

When <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YQ2EG3t3fEI">Ernie Harwell</a>,
 who would become the legendary voice of the Detroit Tigers, left the 
Brooklyn Dodgers’ broadcast booth for the New York Giants, Red Barber 
needed to find a replacement. He decided to go with the young 
broadcaster <a href="https://ufdc.ufl.edu/AA00067187/00001/downloads">who had so impressed him</a> – later describing Scully as “a pretty appealing young green pea … a boy who had something on the ball.”

So Vin Scully, just 22 years old, <a href="https://dodgers.mlblogs.com/on-this-date-70-years-ago-today-vin-scully-joins-the-booth-a66648e399e8">was given the chance of a lifetime</a>, to broadcast the games of the Brooklyn Dodgers, the National League’s most successful team.

But this golden opportunity was challenging in ways Scully did not foresee.

Red Barber, who early in life planned to be a college professor, was a
 tough grader. He demanded a lot of himself, and he held those who 
worked with him to just as high a standard. 

When Vin first entered the Dodgers broadcast booth, Barber told the 
young man that his job was to do whatever Red and his colleague Connie 
Desmond didn’t want to do. He also made it clear that any Scully errors 
would be corrected on air for all to hear. When Barber saw Scully 
drinking a beer with his pregame sandwich – a common practice at the 
time – <a href="https://ufdc.ufl.edu/AA00067191/00001/downloads">he told Vin he never wanted to see him do it again</a>.

Barber was no teetotaler – far from it; leisure hours drinks were 
something he treasured. But he believed a broadcaster should never have a
 drink, even a beer, on the job. Barber reasoned if Scully made an 
error, something inevitable for a broadcaster ad-libbing for hours at a 
time, anyone who saw him sipping the press room brew would conclude that
 alcohol had clouded his performance.

One of Red’s broadcasting mantras was <a href="https://www.google.com/books/edition/The_Broadcasters/bpFZAAAAMAAJ?hl=en&amp;gbpv=0">pregame preparation</a>.
 So before one game, when Scully told his mentor that a Dodgers’ regular
 would be out of the lineup, Barber demanded to know why. Scully told 
him he had no idea. To Barber, that was unacceptable.

Scully quickly realized that he needed to know the “whys”; he had to 
get to the stadium early and spend time talking with managers and 
players, absorbing compelling facts and stories to keep listeners 
engaged during slow stretches of each contest.

The delicate bonds that develop between any mentor and mentee, though
 often fruitful, almost always involve some degree of resentment and 
frustration, likely because each member of the pair has so much vested 
in winning the respect and affection of the other. Some of Barber’s 
barbs must have stung. But throughout his career Scully always credited 
Red for instilling in him the discipline and values of a professional 
baseball announcer. <a href="https://www.google.com/books/edition/Red_Barber/lWhgEAAAQBAJ?hl=en&amp;gbpv=0">He claimed</a>
 that the greatest virtue of Red as a mentor “was the fact that he 
cared. I wasn’t just another kid in the booth, just another announcer. …
 He made sure that my work habits were good, and he rode me if I drifted
 away from his ideal of the right way to work.”

In 1953, Barber left the Brooklyn booth after a dispute over his pay. 

Ahead of that season’s World Series between the Dodgers and the New 
York Yankees, the Series’ sponsor, Gillette, offered Barber only $200 
per game, take it or leave it. Barber left it, and when he did not get 
the support he wanted from Dodgers owner Walter O’Malley, he decided to 
sit out the Series and sign with the Yankees for the following season.

Gillette then turned to Scully, asking him if he’d announce the 
Series. Scully called Red seeking his permission. Barber was genuinely 
moved by Scully’s request, given that his permission clearly was not 
needed.  

All of a sudden, Scully, at the age of 25, was thrust onto the 
national stage. He remains the youngest person to ever call a World 
Series. Two years later, he announced the Brooklyn Dodgers’ only World 
Series win, and in 1958 he moved with the club to Los Angeles, where he 
would call games for the next 59 seasons.

Barber and Scully maintained an affectionate dialogue for the remainder of Red’s life.

When Barber and Mel Allen were honored by the National Baseball Hall of Fame as the first recipients of the <a href="https://baseballhall.org/discover-more/awards/887">Ford C. Frick Award</a>, presented yearly to a broadcaster for “major contributions to baseball,” <a href="https://www.google.com/books/edition/Red_Barber/lWhgEAAAQBAJ?hl=en&amp;gbpv=0">Scully wrote his old teacher</a>,
 “I know as well as anyone alive what a true artist you were behind the 
mike. There is a great deal of you in anything I do well in 
play-by-play, and it will live in me as long as I am working.”

 Brooklyn’s fans for the first time. By the time Scully arrived in 1950,
 Barber – known as “<a href="https://archive.seattletimes.com/archive/?date=19921022&amp;slug=1520043">the Old Redhead</a>” – was the toast of Flatbush. For a combined century – 33 years for Barber and 67 for Scully – the 
two blessed baseball fans with some of the sharpest word pictures ever 
painted of the grand old game. Together in the Brooklyn booth for four 
crucial years, from 1950 to 1953, they forged a relationship that proved
 to be both demanding and gratifying.<h2>The chance of a lifetime</h2>After Scully graduated with a degree in English from Fordham 
University in 1949, he papered East Coast radio stations with 
applications. <a href="https://vault.si.com/vault/1964/05/04/the-transistor-kid">He eventually scored an interview with CBS Radio</a>, where Barber was director of sports. Barber came away impressed, but there were no openings at the time.Barber later phoned Vin Scully when, at the last minute, he needed a 
reporter to cover a college football contest at Fenway Park in Boston 
for CBS College Football Roundup. Scully’s mother answered the phone and

🎥 How Vin Scully scored his Dodgers gig at 22 years old

Monday was one of the more lowkey training camp practices the Kansas City Chiefs have had so far.

With
 overcast conditions, temperatures in the low 70s and a 
smaller-than-normal crowd, the Chiefs practiced for a swift 75 minutes 
Monday, working out in half-pads and completing a 10-10-10 practice.

A
 10-10-10 means 10 offensive plays, 10 defensive plays and 10 minutes of
 special teams play. That process was repeated twice during Monday's 
workout.

With the starting offense going against the second-team defense, and 
the starting defense going against the third-team offense, there's not a
 lot to ream from practices like these.

One thing is clear, 
however. With eleven practices down, more difficult roster decisions are
 coming, as the Chiefs try and find the right combination for their 
53-man roster this season.

One area where that could be especially
 difficult is wide receiver. Juju Smith-Schuster, Marquez 
Valdes-Scantling, Mecole Hardman and Skyy Moore seem perfectly safe. But
 those behind them, guys like Josh Gordon, Daurice Fountain, Justin 
Watson, Corey Coleman, Cornell Powell, Omar Bayless.

All capable 
receivers, but not adequate room for all of them. Be that as it may, 
coach Andy Reid has liked the competition at that spot.

"It's 
good," he said. "(General manager Brett Veach) has brought in great 
people. He's brought in good players that are going to compete. 
Somewhere, we're going to have to let good players go, but it's a 
tribute to Brett and the job he's done."

One receiver who could be
 on the outside looking in is Gordon, which is probably not expected for
 someone who was drafted 10 years ago and is entering his sixth season 
in the NFL.

After a bit of a slow start to training camp, Reid has noticed a greater sense of urgency from Gordon.

"He's
 had really good days the last few days," Reid noted. "I appreciate his 
effort and he's kind of the senior citizen of that group. He's the older
 receiver in that mix and has had success in this league."

Gordon 
has mostly worked with the second-team offense this camp, but he's had a
 handful of reps with Patrick Mahomes and the first-teamers, especially 
in the last few days.

After Monday's practice, Gordon was asked how confident he is in making the 53-man roster.

"I
 just want to go out and get the opportunities I get and give it 110%," 
Gordon said. "Let the cards fall where they may and see what happens, 
but I don't have an answer for that to be honest. I don't. I wasn't a 
starter last year, so I'm fighting for a spot like everybody else."

Gordon
 was signed by the Chiefs last September and elevated to the active 
roster in October. He played in 12 games last season, making just five 
receptions for 32 yards, but he scored his first touchdown since 2019 on
 a one-yard reception in the Las Vegas game in December.

Gordon 
has faced six total suspensions related to the NFL's substance abuse 
policies. The Chiefs are the fourth NFL team he's played for. Gordon led
 the NFL in receiving yards in 2013 and was named a first-team All-Pro.

The
 Chiefs bring back their entire starting offensive line from last season
 after making major changes in that group following the Super Bowl loss 
to Tampa Bay.

On the defensive front, Kansas City is revamped. The
 Chiefs had just 31 sacks in 2021, which ranked 29th in the league. 
Seventh-year pro and defensive tackle Chris Jones feels confident about 
his group’s progression since the end of last season.

"I think we 
left a lot of opportunities last year and in our last game of the season
 on the field," Jones remarked. "We were able to make a few changes in 
the defensive line room with a lot of familiar faces back. This year, I 
think it's about being gritty. Stopping the run, stopping the pass and 
doing whatever we can to help this defense out."

The Chiefs signed
 defensive ends Carlos Dunlap and Matt Dickerson during camp to provide 
depth. Rookie and first-round pick George Karlaftis also adds an 
additional pass rusher to the defensive line.

Frank Clark and Mike
 Danna also add experience at defensive end, while Derrick Nnadi is a 
fifth-year pro at defensive tackle. Tackles Tershawn Wharton and Khalen 
Saunders have also gotten solid reps on the interior of the line.

Starting center Creed Humphrey has taken notice of the solid competition up front.

"It's
 been very competitive these last couple of weeks," he said. "We've had 
some really humid, hot days. Everybody has been pretty moist out there. 
Just getting after it though and competing every play. So, it's been 
really good. You kind of see the mental toughness we have in the group 
and what the defensive line has in their group."

As
 many have probably seen by now, former Chiefs coach and longtime NFL 
head man Dick Vermeil was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in
 Canton, Ohio this past Saturday.

He and Andy Reid have quite a 
bit in common. Namely, they have both coached the Eagles and Chiefs. 
Vermeil coached the Eagles from 1976-1982, the Rams from '97-'99 and 
then the Chiefs from 2001-2005.

Reid says Vermeil talked to him 
extensively, once Reid took over the Eagles in 1999 and again in 2013 
when he got the Chiefs job.

Reid says he and Vermeil talk a lot 
more often than that, about once a week. Reid made the trip down to 
Canton with his wife, Tammy, to honor a longtime friend and mentor.

"He
 talked to me about the atmosphere (in Kansas City) and...he coached me 
up on it," Reid said. "That's priceless. I mean, that's priceless. And 
he checks in all of the time."

Receiver
 Daurice Fountain didn't work Monday due to a groin strain. Still no 
Jody Forston, as he's "making progress" with a strained quad injury. 
Corner Rashad Fenton (shoulder) and offensive lineman Lucas Niang (knee)
 remain on the injured list. Defensive tackle Taylor Stallworth (knee 
bruise) is also still out.

in the NFL.After a bit of a slow start to training camp, Reid has noticed a greater sense of urgency from Gordon."He's
 had really good days the last few days," Reid noted. "I appreciate his 
effort and he's kind of the senior citizen of that group. He's the older
 receiver in that mix and has had success in this league."Gordon 
has mostly worked with the second-team offense this camp, but he's had a
 handful of reps with Patrick Mahomes and the first-teamers, especially 
in the last few days.After Monday's practice, Gordon was asked how confident he is in making the 53-man roster."I
 just want to go out and get the opportunities I get and give it 110%," 
Gordon said. "Let the cards fall where they may and see what happens, 
but I don't have an answer for that to be honest. I don't. I wasn't a 
starter last year, so I'm fighting for a spot like everybody else."Gordon
 was signed by the Chiefs last September and elevated to the active 
roster in October. He played in 12 games last season, making just five 
receptions for 32 yards, but he scored his first touchdown since 2019 on
 a one-yard reception in the Las Vegas game in December.Gordon 
has faced six total suspensions related to the NFL's substance abuse 
policies. The Chiefs are the fourth NFL team he's played for. Gordon led
 the NFL in receiving yards in 2013 and was named a first-team All-Pro.<h2>Revamped defensive line</h2>The
 Chiefs bring back their entire starting offensive line from last season
 after making major changes in that group following the Super Bowl loss 
to Tampa Bay.On the defensive front, Kansas City is revamped. The
 Chiefs had just 31 sacks in 2021, which ranked 29th in the league. 
Seventh-year pro and defensive tackle Chris Jones feels confident about 
his group’s progression since the end of last season."I think we 
left a lot of opportunities last year and in our last game of the season
 on the field," Jones remarked. "We were able to make a few changes in 
the defensive line room with a lot of familiar faces back. This year, I 
think it's about being gritty. Stopping the run, stopping the pass and 
doing whatever we can to help this defense out."The Chiefs signed
 defensive ends Carlos Dunlap and Matt Dickerson during camp to provide 
depth. Rookie and first-round pick George Karlaftis also adds an 
additional pass rusher to the defensive line.Frank Clark and Mike
 Danna also add experience at defensive end, while Derrick Nnadi is a 
fifth-year pro at defensive tackle. Tackles Tershawn Wharton and Khalen 
Saunders have also gotten solid reps on the interior of the line.Starting center Creed Humphrey has taken notice of the solid competition up front."It's
 been very competitive these last couple of weeks," he said. "We've had 
some really humid, hot days. Everybody has been pretty moist out there. 
Just getting after it though and competing every play. So, it's been 
really good. You kind of see the mental toughness we have in the group 
and what the defensive line has in their group."<h2>Dick Vermeil</h2>As
 many have probably seen by now, former Chiefs coach and longtime NFL 
head man Dick Vermeil was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in
 Canton, Ohio this past Saturday.He and Andy Reid have quite a 
bit in common. Namely, they have both coached the Eagles and Chiefs. 
Vermeil coached the Eagles from 1976-1982, the Rams from '97-'99 and 
then the Chiefs from 2001-2005.Reid says Vermeil talked to him 
extensively, once Reid took over the Eagles in 1999 and again in 2013 
when he got the Chiefs job.Reid says he and Vermeil talk a lot 
more often than that, about once a week. Reid made the trip down to 
Canton with his wife, Tammy, to honor a longtime friend and mentor."He
 talked to me about the atmosphere (in Kansas City) and...he coached me 
up on it," Reid said. "That's priceless. I mean, that's priceless. And 
he checks in all of the time."<h2>Injury report</h2>Receiver
 Daurice Fountain didn't work Monday due to a groin strain. Still no 
Jody Forston, as he's "making progress" with a strained quad injury. 
Corner Rashad Fenton (shoulder) and offensive lineman Lucas Niang (knee)
 remain on the injured list. Defensive tackle Taylor Stallworth (knee 
bruise) is also still out.<h2>Roster moves</h2>The Chiefs 
signed defensive end Matt Dickerson Monday and released Shilique Calhoun
 to make room on the 90-man roster. On Saturday, the Chiefs signed 
receiver Devin Gray and released corner Deandre Baker.Gray was getting his first reps in with the team Monday. Dickerson was seen Monday morning as well, wearing jersey No. 96.The
 Chiefs have camp again on Tuesday and will rest Wednesday. They'll work
 Thursday and then travel Friday, heading to Chicago for their first
