GARDEN CITY - The Hays High baseball team did most of their scoring in two innings but it was enough for a doubleheader sweep over Garden City Friday at Clint Lightner Field. The Indians won the opener 5-0 then took game two 11-3 to improve to 4-0 on the season.
HHS travels to rival Great Bend for a doubleheader Tuesday.
Game 1: Hays 5, Garden City 0
The Indians scored four runs in the top of the seventh to break open a 1-run game. Bradyn Dreher's two-out double drove in the final two runs.
Cooper Sanders and Carson Spray both had two hits. Spray homered in the second inning to give the Indians a 1-0 lead. He also doubled to open the seventh.
Greg Hughes pitched a gem. The senior held the Buffaloes to three hits in a complete game shutout with nine strikeouts and three walks.
Game 2: Hays 11, Garden City 3
Hays scored eight runs in the first, five of them on wild pitches. They added two more in the second on a wild pitch and fielders choice.
Carson Spray had two hits. Gage Porter had a double and Bradyn Dreher a triple.
Tanner Boxberger pitched 3 1/3 scoreless innings of relief and picked up the win. Carter Graham pitched the final three innings without allowing a hit and striking out five.
