The Red Demons led 3-0 at the half and are now 6-0.

The Indians are now 4-2. They play at Great Bend Tuesday.

LARNED - The TMP-Marian girls' golf team finished third at Thursday's Larned Invitational at the Larned Country Club.

Hoisington won the team title with a 392, Cimarron finished second with a 425. The Monarchs had a 437 team score.

The Monarchs placed two in the top ten led by Madelyn Rozean who tied for eighth with a 104. Ashley Hipp finished 10th with a 108.

Hoisington's Tricia Schremmer won the individual title with a 92, two shots ahead of Plainville's Emily Stamper.

DODGE CITY - The Hays High girls cross country team took second at the Boot Hill Invitational on Thursday in Dodge City. The Indians placed between Western Athletic Conference teams Garden City and Dodge City.

🏈 Chargers-Chiefs open NFL's exclusive Amazon Prime deal

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Sonny Gray cruised through seven sharp innings and the Minnesota Twins, despite losing AL batting leader Luis Arraez to an early injury, beat the Kansas City Royals 4-0 Wednesday night.

Gary Sánchez had a two-run double and Carlos Correa a couple hits for Minnesota, five games behind AL Central-leading Cleveland with 21 games remaining.

Arraez got an infield hit, raising his average to .320, and scored in the first, then left after the inning with left hamstring tightness. An MRI did not show “anything substantial,” according to manager Rocco Baldelli.

“My guess is we are going to, with the lefty tomorrow that we’re facing, probably let him come in, get some treatment and see how he responds, see what he’s going to be available for. I wouldn’t see him being out or anything like that,” Baldelli said.

The Twins already have a pair of regulars on 10-day injured lists: center fielder Byron Buxton out since Aug. 23 with a right hip strain and second baseman Jorge Polanco (left knee inflammation) has been out since Sept. 3.

Baldelli previously said Polanco might return this week, but Buxton is further away.

Acquired from Cincinnati in March, Gray (8-4) has been a top-of-the-rotation guy for Minnesota all season. He breezed through the Kansas City lineup much of the night, allowing three hits and striking out eight — seven looking.

“When you have a guy who has a really good breaking ball, as a hitter with two strikes, you have that in mind, like he might spin that breaking ball,” catcher Sandy León said. “Then he throws that backdoor two-seam to righties and from those lefties. … It’s not easy to execute it, but he does it.”

The right-hander has been especially strong for the Twins since the All-Star break, going 4-1 with a 1.98 ERA and allowing two or fewer earned runs in nine of those 10 starts.

“My curveball feels good, it’s always been something that’s been there for me. And my fastball command is getting better. And then starting to add a pitch here, add a pitch there, just along the way. … Whatever my strengths are, making sure my strengths, I’m really great at those and then just adding a little bit along the way,” Gray said.

Michael Massey had two of the five hits for Kansas City, which did not send more than four men to the plate in an inning against Gray. Through five innings, just one Royals runner advanced to second base and that came on a passed ball.

“He’s just tough because he can pretty much throw anything in any count,” Massey said.

Making his second start after missing 17 games with right forearm tightness, Zack Greinke (4-9) allowed three runs and struck out one in four innings.

Kansas City has lost six straight at Target Field and failed to score in 43 of its past 44 innings there. It scored three times in the ninth inning Tuesday after being no-hit for eight innings.

Greinke was done in by a 40-pitch first inning. Sánchez hit a two-out, two-run double and the Twins left the bases loaded when León grounded back sharply to Greinke.

⚾ Gray sharp as Twins blank Royals

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — It's sometimes difficult to believe that Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, for all that he's accomplished during his young but brilliant NFL career, would carry such a considerable chip on his shoulder.

He thrives on the doubters. The naysayers. The critics who try to diminish everything he's done.

It was that way when he was coming out of high school, and Texas Tech was among the only schools that gave the baseball player a football scholarship. And coming out of Texas Tech, when so many NFL teams pegged him as a system quarterback who would flounder like so many other “Air Raid” products as a professional.

It was that way this past offseason, too, when detractors tried to argue that Mahomes would take a step back without the game-breaking ability of Tyreek Hill, who was shipped to the Dolphins for a package of draft picks.

Mahomes merely responded by throwing for 360 yards and five touchdowns without an interception on Sunday in Arizona, a performance that was so nearly flawless that the Chiefs built a big enough lead that he could ride the bench at the end.

“That's just Pat. That's just who he is,” Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy said this week, after they had turned their attention from the 44-21 blitz of the Cardinals to a Thursday night showdown against the Los Angeles Chargers.

There was one point during the game when Mahomes, after throwing his fourth touchdown pass, put up four fingers at a woebegone defender, as if to say: “How ‘bout that?" It was done in the heat of the moment, and Mahomes said Tuesday that he didn’t even remember doing it. But it spoke volumes about his competitive fire.

“There's always that behind-the-scenes moment he's going to create that keeps him fired up and energized,” Bieniemy said. “The kid is a tremendous football player. I love the energy and excitement he brings. And he's the ultimate competitor.”

It's something that Chiefs coach Andy Reid identified a half-decade ago, when they traded up in the first round to make Mahomes their quarterback of the future. They were traits similar to those Reid saw while coaching Brett Favre in Green Bay, Donovan McNabb and Michael Vick in Philadelphia, and Alex Smith in Kansas City.

“The way he approaches football is important," Reid said. "If you ask him, family and football are right at the top of the things he does. Whether he does a commercial or whatever, he's going to put football at the front. It's not going to disrupt what he's doing. And as you know, he's extremely smart. His recall is exceptional. His attention goes with that.

“You tell him something once,” Reid said, “and he's got it.”

The same goes if you slight him once. He's going to remember it.

“I mean, you always feel like you have more to prove,” Mahomes said. “I promise, Tom Brady's feeling like he has more to prove, and I think that just comes with any sport, any competitor. If you're not getting better, you're getting worse. And they build you up to tear you down, and you got to kind of know that. For me, it's all about, ‘How can I make myself better?’ Not what other people say. ‘How can I make myself better so we can go out there and win football games?’”

That's rapidly becoming a difficult question to answer.

Mahomes is coming off his sixth career game with at least five TD passes, joining a club that includes Drew Brees, Peyton Manning, Dan Marino and Ben Roethlisberger. Each of them played at least 240 games; Mahomes has played 64.

He's also closing on 20,000 yards for his career — he needs 649 more — a number that Mahomes could reasonably achieve in two games. That would mean reaching the threshold in 66 games, five fewer than the NFL record.

“I'm glad that he's on our side,” Bieniemy said, “and just looking forward to watching him do work from here on out.”

TOPEKA —&nbsp;The state championship dominance of schools like Bishop Miege is now an issue for the Kansas Legislature.

The Kansas State Board of Education passed the multiplier proposal on to legislators by a 6-4 vote Wednesday morning. Board members Porter, Waugh, Mah, Jones, Haas and Clifford voted for the proposal. Members Arnold, Dombrosky, Horst and McNiece voted against it.

The classifications from 4A and down voted in favor of a proposed change that would introduce a multiplier for successful private schools that would inflate their enrollment number for classification purposes, 5A and 6A did not vote in favor.

Kansas High Schools voted 216 to 139 to make the change.

The identifying statutes need to be approved by the Legislature prior to implementation.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Minnesota rookie Joe Ryan and reliever Jovani Moran combined to pitch no-hit ball until Bobby Witt Jr. doubled with one out in the ninth inning as the Twins beat the Kansas City Royals 6-3 on Tuesday night.

Ryan was pulled after seven innings and 106 pitches, four shy of his big league high. There has never been a no-hitter at Target Field and the Royals hadn't come close to getting one against him.

The crowd of 19,005 booed when Twins manager Rocco Baldelli sent Moran to the mound to start the eighth.

“I’m not worried about that,” Baldelli said . “I want what’s best for this team and I want to go to the playoffs and I want to win games in the playoffs, and that’s the priority for me right now.”

“He said, ‘Listen, I’ve thrown like 156 pitches in a game,’ which is fantastical, but I think true,” Baldelli said. “But all that said, it doesn’t really affect what goes on here and the fact that we need him to go pitch against the Guardians later on this week.”

In fact, when he was a senior at Cal State Stanislaus, Ryan did throw 142 pitches in a game against Cal Poly Pomona in 2018.

Ryan said he understood Baldelli's rationale.

“The pitch count obviously comes into play. We’re trying to win some games and I’m throwing in five days again, too,' Ryan said.

Moran worked a perfect eighth. He struck out Drew Waters to begin the ninth before walking pinch-hitter Hunter Dozier and MJ Melendez.

The Royals hadn't come close to a hit until Witt lined a 1-2 fastball for a clean drive to deep left for an RBI double, setting off more boos from the fans.

“I wanted to help and be part of that no-hitter, but that’s part of the game,” Moran said. “And of course I’m going to get mad because I wanted to do my best and get that out, but it happens.”

Sebastian Rivero followed with an infield hit that drove in another run and Vinnie Pasquantino had a sacrifice fly.

The Twins’ last no-hitter was by Francisco Liriano against the White Sox on May 3, 2011 in Chicago.

Carlos Correa, Jose Miranda and Gio Urshela hit home runs as the Twins snapped a three-game skid. They remained five games behind Cleveland in the AL Central.

Ryan (11-8) struck out nine, walked two and set down his last 12 batters. He has never gone past seven innings in his career and had lost three of his previous four decisions.

The 26-year-old righty had never gone past seven innings in his career. He has a big league high of 110 pitches, done Aug. 9 at the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Ryan was a member of last year’s U.S. Olympic team and was traded to Twins by Rays while he was in Japan.

The Royals avoided being no-hit for the first time since 2008 when Jon Lester shut them down in Boston.

“What’s going on in the dugout is frustration,” Royals manager Mike Matheny said. “Guys realizing that it’s embarrassing when you get no-hit. Going up there fighting through their at-bats, but it’s not something you want to have them finish off."

"So it was good to put a couple runs on, get some positive things going, and hopefully it’ll translate into more offense tomorrow.”

Kris Bubic (2-12) allowed 10 hits and five runs with six strikeouts in five innings.

Brown received the honor for a second-straight week. Brown posted 11 saves in two matches as Fort Hays State tied Texas A&amp;M-International and surrendered just one goal to No. 6 ranked Midwestern State. Brown tied his season high for saves against Midwestern State with seven, then made four saves in a joint effort with&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6647">Ben Dixon</a>&nbsp;that resulted in a tie with TAMIU. He had a .786 save percentage for the week. Brown has an overall record of 2-2-1 for the season.&nbsp;&nbsp;

THORNTON, Colo. - The Fort Hays State women's golf team turned in an 11th-place finish at the 2022 Swan Memorial this week at Todd Creek Golf Club, a par-72, 5,997-yard layout outside Denver. The Tigers finished with a three-round total of 955, just four shots behind 10th place. After opening the tournament with a first-round 327, the Tigers improved tremendously in the afternoon on Monday after shaving 17 strokes off their team score.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6948">Morgan Brasser</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6949">Shauna Lee</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6953">Aliyah North</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6954">Hannah Nimmo</a>&nbsp;combined for a score of 310 in round two, the fourth-best single round in program history. Fort Hays State finished the event with a score of 318 in the final round on Tuesday, maintaining their place on the 16-team leaderboard. Brasser finished the opening day in a tie for first place after back-to-back rounds of 1-over 73 before finishing in sixth place at 9-over 225 across three rounds. The junior tied for first in the 89-player field with 37 pars across the 54 holes while carding five birdies on the week. Lee factored in to the team score in both the first and second rounds with scores of 80 and 78 on day one. She finished the event in 47th after a third-round 84, finishing at 26-over 242. Her second-round 81 was a new career low for the sophomore, who totaled five birdies in the event. North bounced back after a tough first round to post a pair of sub-80 scores in rounds two and three, factoring in to the team score in both rounds. She fired a first-round 90 before improving by 11 shots Monday afternoon, turning in an 8-over 79. The freshman improved again on Tuesday, tying for the low round by a Tiger in round three at 7-over 78. North finished in a tie for 56th at 31-over 247 while recording four birdies on the week. Nimmo was one of only two Tigers that factored in to the team score in all three rounds, finishing in 59th place after rounds of 86, 80 and 83 to finish at 33-over 249. The Tigers were in the Top 25 in both the preseason and first regular season poll, but slipped to the highest listed receiving votes team outside of the Top 25. Fort Hays State is out to a 2-2-2 start to the season, all in non-conference play. That includes a 1-1 mark against Top 25-ranked competition this season. The Tigers are set to start their 12-match conference slate this week, starting at Thursday at Rogers State which is another team receiving votes in this week's poll. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs coach Andy Reid criticized the field inside State Farm Stadium on Tuesday after two Kansas City players slipped on the turf and sustained injuries during their 44-21 win over the Arizona Cardinals last week.

First-round pick Trent McDuffie hurt his hamstring when the young cornerback slipped during an otherwise impressive NFL debut. He was placed on injured reserve Tuesday, meaning he will miss at least the next four games.

Harrison Butker's plant foot also slipped awkwardly during a kickoff early in the game, forcing the Chiefs to use safety Justin Reid for most of their kickoffs and extra points. Butker was diagnosed with a sprained ankle and, because the Chiefs play the Chargers on Thursday night, it's unlikely he will be available for Week 2.

The Chiefs signed former Jets kicker Matt Ammendola to the practice squad and could elevate him for the game.

“It was a little loose. That's what happens sometimes when you re-sod,” Reid said of the turf. “It's part of the Butker injury and the McDuffie injury, and that's unfortunate. The turf picked up, and I would tell you that did have something to do with it. If it didn't, I'd tell you that, too. It's not an excuse by any means. But you all see it when you watch the tape.”

The Cardinals have a unique natural grass field that essentially sits on a tray, allowing it to be slid out under the roofed stadium when it's used for concerts and other events. It also gives the surface an opportunity to be in the sun.

The stadium is maintained by ASM Global, which manages six other NFL stadiums, including Soldier Field. The home of the Chicago Bears was re-sodded earlier this month after it was roundly criticized following their preseason opener.

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State Athletics will welcome seven new members into the Tiger Sports Hall of Fame on Saturday, September 24, 2022. The inductees going into the Hall of Fame this year include Jon Nelson (Track &amp; Field/Cross Country, 1970-74), Fred Campbell (Men's Basketball, 1984-86), Steve Broxterman (Track &amp; Field, 1986-88), Greg Yost (Football, 1987-90), Damian Evans (Men's Basketball, 1990-92), Derek Pomeroy (Baseball, 1992-93), and Shelby White (Women's Golf, 2004-07). The induction ceremony will take place the morning of Saturday, September 24 inside the Memorial Union on the campus of Fort Hays State University. Registration for the invitation only event begins at 9 AM and the ceremony begins at 10 AM. The new Hall of Fame class will then be recognized publicly at halftime of the Fort Hays State vs. Missouri Southern football game, which begins at 7 PM.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Jon Nelson (Track &amp; Field/Cross Country, 1970-74) A native of Johnson, Kansas, Jon Nelson was the 1973 NAIA Indoor National Champion in the 1000-yard run with a time of 2:12.9. He was also a member of the indoor national runner-up 2-mile relay team in 1973. A year earlier in 1972, Nelson finished third in the 800 meters at the outdoor national championships. He was a three-time All-America performer in track and field and twice a conference individual champion in the outdoor 880-yard run. He was a national qualifier three consecutive years for the NAIA Outdoor Championships from 1972-74. Nelson was also a steady contributor in cross country, helping the team to a conference title in 1972, a year in which he earned all-conference honors.

Fred Campbell (Men's Basketball, 1984-86) A native of Macon, Georgia, Fred Campbell played basketball at Fort Hays State from 1984-86 after transferring from Crowder College. Campbell was an All-America Second Team selection as a senior in 1985-86 and a two-time All-CSIC selection. He helped the Tigers to a second-straight NAIA National Championship in 1984-85 as a junior. The Tigers had a record of 60-12 in Campbell's two years with the program and he finished with 1,250 points, ranking sixth in career scoring at the completion of his career. Campbell averaged 20.5 points and 9.4 rebounds per game his senior year of 1985-86 to earn All-America status, finishing with a total of 698 points and 318 rebounds. The 698 points was second-most at FHSU for a single-season at the time, only behind 1984-85 teammate Edgar Eason's 745. Campbell had 552 points during his junior year, averaging 14.5 per game. Campbell is one of 23 1,000-point scorers in the program's history. He produced the third-most points of any two-year player in the program's history, only behind Dennis Edwards (1993-95) and Mark Harris (1986-88). Campbell went on to play in the NBA summer league before beginning a professional career overseas in Portugal in 1989. Campbell played professional basketball for a staggering 34 years, retiring this year at the age of 60. In addition to Portugal, he also played professionally in Austria, Spain, France, Italy, Poland, Latvia, Belgium and 18 years in Israel, where he currently resides with his family.

Steve Broxterman (Track &amp; Field, 1986-88) A native of Baileyville, Kansas, Steve Broxterman was the 1988 NAIA indoor national champion in the high jump as a senior, clearing a personal best 7 feet, 1 inch. That effort still owns a share of the indoor school record today, also cleared by Don Carter in 1985. He was the CSIC champion in the event that year as well. Overall, Broxterman was a two-time NAIA All-America performer, also earning the distinction in 1987. His best effort as a junior in 1987 was 6 feet, 10 inches. He was twice an all-conference performer and a four-time all-district performer. Broxterman's national title in 1988 helped the team to a fourth-place finish at indoor nationals. He was also a national qualifier in the high jump while he was at Highland (Kan.) Community College before transferring to FHSU for his final two years.

Greg Yost (Football, 1987-90) A native of Gorham, Kansas, Greg Yost played football at Fort Hays State from 1987-90. He was an All-America First Team selection as a defensive lineman his senior year of 1990 and was an All-CSIC First Team selection in both 1989 and 1990. Overall, he was a three-time all-conference selection. Yost was a four-year starter for the Tigers, playing in a total of 35 games. He played only three games his sophomore year after suffering a season-ending injury. In 1990 as a senior, he produced a staggering 97 tackles, nine sacks, and 17 tackles for loss, and led the team in pass breakups with 12 from his defensive tackle position to earn the All-America First Team selection. He helped the Tigers to a record of 8-4 in 1990 and an appearance in the NAIA national playoffs, the final season before FHSU made its full transition to the NCAA. Yost set career records for both sacks and tackles for loss at FHSU. He finished with 20 sacks and 43 tackles for loss in his career. Though the sacks record has only been topped twice, he still owns the tackles for loss record. He had 225 tackles over his four seasons at FHSU.

Damian Evans (Men's Basketball, 1990-92) A native of Chicago, Illinois, Damian Evans played two seasons at Fort Hays State from 1990-92 after transferring from Kings River Community College in California. He was an NAIA All-America selection as a junior, and an All-RMAC First Team selection each of his seasons as a Tiger. As a junior in 1990-91, Evans averaged 21.9 points per game, scoring in double figures all 30 games. He scored at least 30 points in a game six times that season, including a career-high 38 against Emporia State, and also averaged 4.3 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game. His 161 free throws made in 1990-91 was third best at FHSU for a season at the time, but still ranks fourth today. He helped FHSU set a new school record for scoring average that season at 90.4 points per game, only to be topped by the 1994-95 and 1995-96 squads a few years later. As a senior in 1991-92, Evans averaged 15.9 points per game leading an FHSU team that won the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference title and had four players average double figures in scoring. He added 4.2 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game that season. Evans scored 1,085 points in his career, one of 23 1,000-point scorers in FHSU history, and his 19.0 points per game scoring average is tied for fifth-best in school history. He is one of only seven players in the program's history to score at least 1,000 points in just a two-year career at FHSU, and he joins career scoring average leader Dennis Edwards as the only two of those seven that played less than 60 games in their careers at FHSU.

Derek Pomeroy (Baseball, 1992-93) A native of Topeka, Kansas, Derek Pomeroy was a member of the Tiger Baseball team for two years from 1992 to 1993 after transferring from Barton County Community College. He was an All-RMAC and All-District selection in 1992 as a junior hitting .432 with 26 extra-base hits (16 doubles, 2 triples, 8 home runs) and 44 RBIs. His .432 batting average was just one point shy of the school record at that time and it led the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. He carried a 27-game hitting streak over into his senior year and went on to break the NCAA Division II hit streak record by hitting safely in 34 consecutive games, breaking the old mark by one game. The streak lasted from March 31, 1992 to March 17, 1993. His record stood for a year before it was broken in 1994 by a streak of 38. Pomeroy backed up his strong junior season by earning Mile High Intercollegiate Baseball League Co-Player of the Year honors as a senior with a .380 batting average, 13 doubles, 7 home runs, and 53 RBIs. He was also an All-Central Region selection that season. Pomeroy set the school record for career batting average at .405 in 1993 before that was eventually broken by two other Tiger Sports Hall of Fame members - Jerry Valdez in 1997 (.408) and Jeff Bieker in 2005 (.421). His .685 slugging percentage was second-best in school history at the completion of his career.

Shelby White (Women's Golf, 2004-07) A native of Dodge City, Kansas, Shelby White, was one of the top individual golfers in women's program history. In three years at Fort Hays State, White won nine tournaments and collected 21 Top-10 finishes. In 2005-06 as a sophomore, she was the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Player of the Year and was the individual medalist at the RMAC Championships. She qualified for the NCAA West Regional that year. She was a three-time All-RMAC selection in golf and a member of the RMAC All-Academic Team.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The inductees going into the Hall of Fame this year include Jon Nelson (Track &amp; Field/Cross Country, 1970-74), Fred Campbell (Men's Basketball, 1984-86), Steve Broxterman (Track &amp; Field, 1986-88), Greg Yost (Football, 1987-90), Damian Evans (Men's Basketball, 1990-92), Derek Pomeroy (Baseball, 1992-93), and Shelby White (Women's Golf, 2004-07). The induction ceremony will take place the morning of Saturday, September 24 inside the Memorial Union on the campus of Fort Hays State University. Registration for the invitation only event begins at 9 AM and the ceremony begins at 10 AM. The new Hall of Fame class will then be recognized publicly at halftime of the Fort Hays State vs. Missouri Southern football game, which begins at 7 PM.&nbsp;&nbsp;Jon Nelson (Track &amp; Field/Cross Country, 1970-74) A native of Johnson, Kansas, Jon Nelson was the 1973 NAIA Indoor National Champion in the 1000-yard run with a time of 2:12.9. He was also a member of the indoor national runner-up 2-mile relay team in 1973. A year earlier in 1972, Nelson finished third in the 800 meters at the outdoor national championships. He was a three-time All-America performer in track and field and twice a conference individual champion in the outdoor 880-yard run. He was a national qualifier three consecutive years for the NAIA Outdoor Championships from 1972-74. Nelson was also a steady contributor in cross country, helping the team to a conference title in 1972, a year in which he earned all-conference honors.Fred Campbell (Men's Basketball, 1984-86) A native of Macon, Georgia, Fred Campbell played basketball at Fort Hays State from 1984-86 after transferring from Crowder College. Campbell was an All-America Second Team selection as a senior in 1985-86 and a two-time All-CSIC selection. He helped the Tigers to a second-straight NAIA National Championship in 1984-85 as a junior. The Tigers had a record of 60-12 in Campbell's two years with the program and he finished with 1,250 points, ranking sixth in career scoring at the completion of his career. Campbell averaged 20.5 points and 9.4 rebounds per game his senior year of 1985-86 to earn All-America status, finishing with a total of 698 points and 318 rebounds. The 698 points was second-most at FHSU for a single-season at the time, only behind 1984-85 teammate Edgar Eason's 745. Campbell had 552 points during his junior year, averaging 14.5 per game. Campbell is one of 23 1,000-point scorers in the program's history. He produced the third-most points of any two-year player in the program's history, only behind Dennis Edwards (1993-95) and Mark Harris (1986-88). Campbell went on to play in the NBA summer league before beginning a professional career overseas in Portugal in 1989. Campbell played professional basketball for a staggering 34 years, retiring this year at the age of 60. In addition to Portugal, he also played professionally in Austria, Spain, France, Italy, Poland, Latvia, Belgium and 18 years in Israel, where he currently resides with his family.Steve Broxterman (Track &amp; Field, 1986-88) A native of Baileyville, Kansas, Steve Broxterman was the 1988 NAIA indoor national champion in the high jump as a senior, clearing a personal best 7 feet, 1 inch. That effort still owns a share of the indoor school record today, also cleared by Don Carter in 1985. He was the CSIC champion in the event that year as well. Overall, Broxterman was a two-time NAIA All-America performer, also earning the distinction in 1987. His best effort as a junior in 1987 was 6 feet, 10 inches. He was twice an all-conference performer and a four-time all-district performer. Broxterman's national title in 1988 helped the team to a fourth-place finish at indoor nationals. He was also a national qualifier in the high jump while he was at Highland (Kan.) Community College before transferring to FHSU for his final two years.Greg Yost (Football, 1987-90) A native of Gorham, Kansas, Greg Yost played football at Fort Hays State from 1987-90. He was an All-America First Team selection as a defensive lineman his senior year of 1990 and was an All-CSIC First Team selection in both 1989 and 1990. Overall, he was a three-time all-conference selection. Yost was a four-year starter for the Tigers, playing in a total of 35 games. He played only three games his sophomore year after suffering a season-ending injury. In 1990 as a senior, he produced a staggering 97 tackles, nine sacks, and 17 tackles for loss, and led the team in pass breakups with 12 from his defensive tackle position to earn the All-America First Team selection. He helped the Tigers to a record of 8-4 in 1990 and an appearance in the NAIA national playoffs, the final season before FHSU made its full transition to the NCAA. Yost set career records for both sacks and tackles for loss at FHSU. He finished with 20 sacks and 43 tackles for loss in his career. Though the sacks record has only been topped twice, he still owns the tackles for loss record. He had 225 tackles over his four seasons at FHSU.Damian Evans (Men's Basketball, 1990-92) A native of Chicago, Illinois, Damian Evans played two seasons at Fort Hays State from 1990-92 after transferring from Kings River Community College in California. He was an NAIA All-America selection as a junior, and an All-RMAC First Team selection each of his seasons as a Tiger. As a junior in 1990-91, Evans averaged 21.9 points per game, scoring in double figures all 30 games. He scored at least 30 points in a game six times that season, including a career-high 38 against Emporia State, and also averaged 4.3 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game. His 161 free throws made in 1990-91 was third best at FHSU for a season at the time, but still ranks fourth today. He helped FHSU set a new school record for scoring average that season at 90.4 points per game, only to be topped by the 1994-95 and 1995-96 squads a few years later. As a senior in 1991-92, Evans averaged 15.9 points per game leading an FHSU team that won the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference title and had four players average double figures in scoring. He added 4.2 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game that season. Evans scored 1,085 points in his career, one of 23 1,000-point scorers in FHSU history, and his 19.0 points per game scoring average is tied for fifth-best in school history. He is one of only seven players in the program's history to score at least 1,000 points in just a two-year career at FHSU, and he joins career scoring average leader Dennis Edwards as the only two of those seven that played less than 60 games in their careers at FHSU.Derek Pomeroy (Baseball, 1992-93) A native of Topeka, Kansas, Derek Pomeroy was a member of the Tiger Baseball team for two years from 1992 to 1993 after transferring from Barton County Community College. He was an All-RMAC and All-District selection in 1992 as a junior hitting .432 with 26 extra-base hits (16 doubles, 2 triples, 8 home runs) and 44 RBIs. His .432 batting average was just one point shy of the school record at that time and it led the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. He carried a 27-game hitting streak over into his senior year and went on to break the NCAA Division II hit streak record by hitting safely in 34 consecutive games, breaking the old mark by one game. The streak lasted from March 31, 1992 to March 17, 1993. His record stood for a year before it was broken in 1994 by a streak of 38. FHSU Athletics welcomes seven Hall of Fame inductees on September 24

SEATTLE (AP) — It was a familiar scene in Seattle: Russell Wilson leading his team downfield for a game-winning score late in the fourth quarter.

This time, he wasn’t given a chance by his new coach in Denver, pulled off the field in exchange for a 64-yard field goal attempt that left plenty of confusion and the Seattle Seahawks celebrating an unexpected season-opening, 17-16 victory over the Broncos on Monday night.

With the Broncos facing fourth-and-5 in Seahawks territory with a minute remaining and all their timeouts, coach Nathaniel Hackett opted to let the clock run down to 20 seconds before sending out Brandon McManus to try the low-percentage kick.

“I don’t think it was the wrong decision. I think he could make it,” Wilson said after his return to the city where he played his first 10 seasons. “Obviously in hindsight, we didn’t make it, but if we were in that situation again, I wouldn't doubt whatever he decided.”

Geno Smith threw two first-half touchdown passes as the Seahawks' offense started brilliantly in the post-Wilson era. Denver had plenty of chances after halftime but fumbled twice at the 1-yard line.

Then came the final minute, which raised plenty of questions about Hackett's clock management and decision-making in his debut as a head coach. NFL kickers are 2 for 35 on attempts of 64 yards or more since 1991, according to Sportradar, and McManus' career long is 61 yards.

The kick missed wide left, and instead of Wilson leading the 36th career fourth-quarter or overtime comeback of his career, the Seahawks celebrated to chants of “Geno! Geno!”

“I was surprised that they took Russ out there,” Seattle coach Pete Carroll said.

Denver faced fourth-and-5 at the Seattle 46 after Wilson hit Javonte Williams for a 9-yard gain. McManus said that was the exact spot on the field the offense needed to reach to give him a shot at the kick.

“I wish we would have gotten a lot closer, but it put us in that weird spot there because we were in field-goal range, but we were on that fourth-down situation,” Hackett said. “I didn’t think we were gonna get that many yards. ... We just made our decision and wanted to take our shot there.”

Hackett then used his timeouts while the Seahawks kneeled down, elongating the Seattle celebration.

Smith and the Seahawks did very little offensively in the second half but their first half was good enough. Smith threw a touchdown pass of 38 yards to Will Dissly on the first possession of the season and hit Colby Parkinson for a 25-yard touchdown in the second quarter.

Smith finished 23 of 28 for 195 yards, but was 17 of 18 for 164 yards in the first half.

“For him to go out there and get a win like that shows the confidence we have in him,” Seattle wide receiver DK Metcalf said.

Wilson was 29 of 42 for 340 yards and a touchdown. But Denver couldn’t overcome its red-zone inefficiency with both Melvin Gordon III and Williams fumbling on plays snapped at Seattle 1-yard line.

“We can run the ball. We can pass the ball. We just have to be sound in the red zone. That's been our issue,” Gordon said.

The Seahawks moved into first place in the NFC West after Arizona, San Francisco and the Los Angeles Rams all lost on Sunday.

But it was still a special environment in a place that I’ve always loved,” Wilson said.Wilson and the Broncos had plenty of chances to silence the crowd.Denver ran eight plays inside the Seattle 12 in the third quarter and came away with zero points after the two fumbles.The Broncos had three more plays inside the Seattle 10 midway through the fourth quarter and still couldn’t find the end zone. Denver reached the 3-yard-line but its third false start of the game moved Wilson back to the 8 and he was incomplete on his next two throws. McManus’ 26-yard field goal with 6:13 left pulled the Broncos within 17-16.INJURIESSeattle safety Jamal Adams suffered what Carroll said after the game was a serious injury to his left quadriceps tendon. Adams limped off the field after nearly sacking Wilson in the first quarter and eventually was driven away on a cart.Denver lost right guard Quinn Meinerz to a hamstring injury in the first half and cornerback K’Waun Williams to a hand injury in the fourth quarter.
