HAYS – After opening the Diamond Classic with a win Thursday, the Hays High Indians (10-7) split their two games on Friday, beating Brush Colorado 14-3 in the nightcap after losing to Manhattan 9-1 in the first game.
GAME 1: Manhattan 9, Hays 1
Manhattan opened the first game of the day scoring two runs
in each of the first three innings and then added three more in the sixth in a
9-1 win over Hays.
The Indians lone run came in the bottom of the fifth inning when Cooper Sanders drove in a run on a groundout.
Hays was limited to just three hits.
Carson Spray suffered the loss. He allowed six runs, three earned, on four hits with four walks and two strikeouts.
GAME 2: Hays 14, Brush CO. 3
The Indians used a nine-run second inning in a run-rule victory
over the Brush Colorado Beetdiggers 14-3 in the final game of the day Friday.
After a scoreless first inning, the Indians offense exploded in the second inning scoring nine runs.
In the inning Hays scored on three Brush errors, a Cooper Sanders RBI infield single, a three-run Greg Hughes double and a two-run Derrik Riggs homerun.
The Indians added two more runs in the third and three in the fourth for a 14-3 win.
Hughes was two-for-two with three RBIs. Riggs was 1-for-2 with two RBIs.
Hughes earned the win. He allowed just one hit in two shutout innings with four strikeouts.
Hays will close out the Diamond Classic at approximately 3:45 Saturday against Life Prep.
