HAYS – The Hays High boys golf team used their home course
to their advantage Monday. The Indians shot a 359 which was good enough for
third place at the Hays 5A Regional at Smoky Hill Country Club. Salina South won
the regional title with a 353, two shots ahead of Hutchinson and six better
than Hays High.

Hutchinson’s Ty Adkins won the individual title with a 7-over-par
78. Salina South sophomore Jackson Perry was three shots back and finished
second with a 10-over-par 81. The Cougars Maddox Xaysongkham finished in third
place with an 82.

Hays High had four golfers finish in the top-20. Landen Clark
placed sixth with a 17-over-par 88, Ashton Bickle was one shot back and finished
in seventh place with an 89. Blake Buckles fired a 91 and was part of a seven-way
tie for 10th place which included freshman Caleb Thompson.

⛳ HHS finishes third at own regional, qualifies for state

HOXIE – The TMP-Marian Monarchs boys golf team finished in
third place at Monday’s Hoxie 2A Regional and qualified for next week’s 2A
state tournament. Hill City shot a 322 and won the team title by four shots
over host Hoxie. The Monarchs shot a 351 which was seven shots better than fourth
place Rawlins County.

Hill City junior Dylan Budig fired an even-par 71 and won
the individual title, six shots better than TMP-Marian’s Pake Dewey who
finished second with a 6-over-par 78. Hoxie’s Noah Dowell finished third with a
79.

Ellis junior Austin Carroll qualified as an individual after
shooting a 10-over-par 82 and finished in sixth place. Plainville sophomores Noah
Brewster and Jayden Morris also qualified for state. Brewster tied for ninth place with
an 83 and Morris tied for 11th with an 84.

The 2A State Tournament will be held at the Hesston Golf Course
in Hesston on Monday and Tuesday, May 22-23.

Beginning next year, high school basketball teams will shoot two free throws for common fouls when in the “bonus.” This change to Rule 4-8-1 eliminates the one-and-one scenario and sets new foul limits each quarter for awarding the bonus free throw.

Rules changes were approved by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Basketball Rules Committee at its annual meeting April 24-26&nbsp;in Indianapolis. The recommendations were subsequently approved by the NFHS Board of Directors.

In addition to awarding two foul shots for all common fouls, teams will reach the bonus when their opponent commits five fouls in each quarter and team fouls will reset at the end of each quarter. Previously, teams were awarded the one-and-one bonus when their opponents committed seven fouls in a half and two foul shots when 10 fouls were committed each half.

“The rules committee studied data that showed higher injury rates on rebounding situations and saw this as an opportunity to reduce opportunities for rough play during rebounds,” said Lindsey Atkinson, NFHS Director of Sports and liaison to the Basketball Rules Committee. “Additionally, resetting the fouls each quarter will improve game flow and allow teams to adjust their play by not carrying foul totals to quarters two and four.”

The throw-in procedure for front-court violations was simplified in Rules 7-5-2 through 7-5-5. When the ball is in team control in the offensive team’s frontcourt and the defensive team commits a violation, a common foul prior to the bonus, or the ball becomes dead, the corresponding throw-in by the offensive team will be at one of four designated spots determined by where the infraction took place. The designated spots are either the nearest 28-foot mark along each sideline or the nearest spot 3 feet outside the lane line on the end line. The one exception is when the defensive team causes a ball to be out of bounds, the throw-in shall be the spot where the ball went out of bounds.

Throw-in administration was also addressed in a change to Rule 7-6-6. When an official administers a throw-in to the wrong team, the error can be fixed before the first dead ball after the ball becomes live unless there has been a change in possession.

According to the 2021-22 NFHS High School Athletics Participation Survey, basketball is the third-most popular high school sport for boys with 521,616 participants in 18,428 schools nationwide. It is the fourth-most popular girls sport with 370,466 participants in 17,901 schools.

This provides an opportunity for schools with hard-to-find colors to have all players wear a black undershirt.</li><li>Rule 9-3-3 was amended to allow a player to step out of bounds and return to the court if the player gains no advantage. A player is penalized only if, after returning inbounds, the player is the first to touch the ball or avoids a violation.</li>

🏀 Changes to high school free throws in 2023-24

MANHATTAN, Kan. - Kansas State Director of Athletics Gene Taylor announced today that head
football coach Chris Klieman, who guided the Wildcats to a Big 12
Championship in 2022, has signed a new eight-year contract that sees him at the
helm of the program through the 2030 season.

Klieman, who is entering his fifth year in Manhattan in
2023, will be paid an average base salary of $5.5 million throughout the life
of the contract.

“Chris has done an unbelievable job building a program in
four years that not only has won a Big 12 Championship, but even more
importantly, one that players have taken great pride in and helped sustain a
championship culture,” Taylor said. “He is a tremendous fit for K-State and
Manhattan, and we want to continue to ride the momentum that he and his staff
have fostered. We are excited that Chris will be the leader of our football
program for many years to come.”

Klieman holds a 30-20 record at K-State, which includes a
10-4 record last season when the Wildcats won the 2022 Big 12 Championship with
a 31-28 overtime victory over No. 3 TCU. It was K-State’s third Big 12 title
and first since 2012, while it was the Wildcats’ first 10-win season in 10
years. Additionally, K-State is 5-3 against teams ranked in the top 10 of the
Associated Press poll since Klieman took over the reins in 2019, the most
victories over top-10 teams by any Big 12 program over the span. A
school-record three of those wins came during the 2022 season.

"I am extremely appreciative of Dr. Richard Linton and Gene Taylor for their phenomenal support of our football program." Klieman said. "What we have been able to accomplish in our first four years is due to the culture that our players and staff have been able to create. K-State concluded the 2022 season ranked No. 9 in the
College Football Playoff Top 25, the Wildcats’ second-highest ranking ever in
the CFP era and the highest for the final poll. The Wildcats also finished No.
14 in the final Associated Press Top 25 and AFCA Coaches Poll, their highest
final ranking in each since 2012.

Under Klieman’s watch, running back Deuce Vaughn became just
the second player in school history to earn back-to-back Consensus All-America
honors when he picked up the nod again in 2022. Vaughn was one of three
Wildcats to earn First Team All-America accolades in 2022 – the most by K-State
in a single season since 2003 – and one of five overall All-Americans – the
most since 2012.

The other two First Team All-Americans also earned
individual awards from the Big 12 coaches as Felix Anudike-Uzomah was named the
Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year and Big 12 Defensive Lineman of the Year,
while Cooper Beebe was the Big 12 Offensive Lineman of the Year. In all,
Klieman helped produce 17 All-Big 12 performers in 2022, the most by K-State
since 2012.

The Wildcats had four players drafted off the 2022 team,
including Anudike-Uzomah who was the first-round selection of the Kansas City
Chiefs to become the first Wildcat selected in the first round since 2009.
Cornerback Julius Brents was selected in the second round – No. 44 overall – by
the Indianapolis Colts, marking the first time in school history that two
Wildcats were selected within the first 44 picks of an NFL Draft. Additionally,
Vaughn (Dallas Cowboys) and Josh Hayes (Tampa Bay Buccaneers) were picked in
the sixth round of the draft.

A proven winner with a championship history, Klieman was
named the 35th head football coach in Kansas State history on December 10,
2018. His 30 wins are the most in school history by a head coach in their first
four years and already the fifth most total wins overall in school history.
Included in those 30 overall wins, Klieman has kept the Governor’s Cup trophy
in Manhattan with four victories over in-state rival KU, has collected 20 Big
12 Conference wins and seen his teams play in three bowl games.

Thanks to his 30 wins in Manhattan, Klieman holds a career
head coaching record of 102-33 as his 75.6% winning percentage ranks fourth
among current FBS coaches that have led programs for at least 10 seasons,
trailing only Clemson’s Dabo Swinney (80.5%), Alabama’s Nick Saban (80.1%) and
James Madison’s Curt Cignetti (76.1%).

Not only has Klieman’s tenure produced success on the field,
but his mantra of “how you do one thing is how you do everything” has brought
success in the classroom. Over Klieman’s first four seasons, K-State has a
combined 133 Academic All-Big 12 honors – the second most in the conference
during that timeframe – which includes a school record 34 in each of the last
two seasons. Additionally, the Wildcats boast a pair of National Football
Foundation National Scholar-Athletes under Klieman in Adam Holtorf (2019) and
Adrian Martinez (2022).

K-State opens the 2023 season by hosting Southeast Missouri
State on September 2 and Troy on September 9. The Wildcats then visit former
conference foe Missouri on September 16 before opening Big 12 play by hosting
new conference member UCF on September 23.

👟 FHSU 800m crew surpass national qualifying time in Colorado

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Christian Yelich continued to heat up at the plate and created even more fireworks on the basepaths as he helped the Milwaukee Brewers complete a sweep of the Kansas City Royals.

After homering twice on Saturday,&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/BallySportWI/status/1657814065324982281">Yelich went deep again</a>&nbsp;Sunday in the Brewers' 9-6 victory. He also hit an RBI single and scored on a bizarre play as part of Milwaukee’s seven-run outburst in the third inning.

Yelich is batting .348 (16 of 46) with four homers and 12 RBIs in May. The 2018 NL MVP hit just .228 with three homers and 11 RBIs in April.

“I'm just making adjustments and just trying to find ways to contribute,” Yelich said. “You're constantly tinkering with things and trying to be the best version of yourself, whatever that is, each day. For me, each day's a new day."

The Royals led 4-1 before it all fell apart for them in the bottom of the third. Yelich was at the center of that rally.

After his RBI single put runners on the corners with nobody out in the third, Yelich attempted to steal second.&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/BallySportWI/status/1657826078574927875">That’s when things got weird.</a>

Royals shortstop Maikel Garcia missed the throw from Perez, and Joey Wiemer raced home from third as the ball went into the outfield. After sliding into second, Yelich got up and took off for third.

The throw from center fielder Nate Eaton took a couple of bounces, went through Dozier's legs and appeared to bounce off the body of Brewers third-base coach Jason Lane. As the ball started to roll back toward home in foul territory, Yelich headed toward the plate.

Dozier chased down the ball, dove and pushed the ball toward Perez, but his toss couldn’t get there before Yelich slid home safely with the tying run. Garcia and Eaton were charged with errors on the play.

“I don't really think (Eaton's throw) was off line,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “I think it just got hidden behind the runner going second to third, so Dozier couldn't find it. He said as it came out from underneath the runner, he tried to block it and it just got through him, and then obviously it got kicked by the third base coach and it was just a comedy of errors at that point.”

Owen Miller delivered an RBI double later in the inning. Brice Turang capped the rally by sending a 2-2 changeup from Jose Cuas over the center-field wall for a 408-foot blast.

Royals starter Jordan Lyles (0-7) allowed seven runs – all earned – in 2 1/3 innings. Lyles owns a 7.14 ERA in his first season with the Royals, who signed him to a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/mlb-sports-kansas-city-royals-jordan-lyles-cb8526645597044d4449d08d7c5ad65a">two-year, $17 million contract</a>&nbsp;last December.

Milwaukee's Eric Lauer (4-4) struck out six and allowed two runs, two walks and two hits over 5 1/3 innings in his first relief appearance since 2021. Milwaukee manager Craig Counsell had said Saturday the Brewers would skip Lauer’s next scheduled start.

Lauer, who had lost his last three starts, entered in the fourth and didn't allow a hit until Dozier and Witt homered off him in the ninth.

“Overall it was a good job of kind of what I wanted to go out there and feel as far as just getting on the mound, competing and just kind of letting it loose and not worrying about how long I'm going to be in there and how many pitches I'm going to have to throw,” Lauer said. “It's that bullpen kind of mentality that I have to have. It was a good flip-switch for me.”

Brewers starter Colin Rea allowed four runs in 3 2/3 innings.

Royals: Start a three-game series at San Diego. Scheduled starters for Monday's game are RHP Brad Keller (3-3, 4.31 ERA) for the Royals and RHP Michael Wacha (3-1, 4.81) for the Padres.

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Rookie Joey Wiemer’s sacrifice fly with one out in the ninth inning gave the Milwaukee Brewers a 4-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Saturday night.

Christian Yelich homered twice for Milwaukee, with the second tying it at 3 in the sixth with a shot off Josh Taylor, who relieved starter Zack Greinke to begin the inning.

Brian Anderson opened the ninth with a single off Carlos Hernandez (0-1), who came on in relief to start the inning. Owen Miller’s one-out double sent Anderson to third. Wiemer then sent an 0-1 pitch deep enough to center to easily score Anderson — and then got a Gatorade shower from his jubilant teammates to celebrate the win.

“I’m not sitting on a pitch in that situation," Wiemer said. "Just trying to get anything I can flick out in the outfield, do my job. Not trying to do too much there.”

Devin Williams (3-0) got the victory with a perfect ninth.

Salvador Perez opened the fifth with his eighth homer to put the Royals up 3-2, chasing starter Adrian Houser.

Houser, making his second start after four rehab starts at Triple-A, allowed three runs and eight hits as the Royals left six aboard through four innings, including three in scoring position.

“He was able to get out of it,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “The at-bats were good. Even when we got out in those situations, it wasn’t like just weak contact or whatever. We got into deeper counts and he made some pitches.”

Yelich tied it at 2 in the third with his fifth home run. Brice Turang led off with an infield single. And with two outs, Yelich sent a 2-0 pitch 427 feet to center.

Yelich is batting .333 (14-for-42) over his last 11 games with three homers, a double, 10 RBIs, three walks, three stolen bases and eight runs scored.

“I’m just making adjustments, trying to be consistent up there and string together really good, quality at-bats and see what happens,” Yelich said. “They haven’t all really been falling. You’ve just got to stick with it and just try and continue to put good at-bats together, good swings.”

The Royals took a 1-0 lead in the first when Bobby Witt Jr. doubled, advanced on an infield single and scored on M.J. Melendez’s sacrifice fly.

Kansas City made it 2-0 in the third on consecutive two-out doubles by Melendez and Nick Pratto.

Greinke ended his five-inning outing by getting Wiemer on a called third strike, becoming the fifth pitcher in major league history to strike out 1,000 different batters — joining Nolan Ryan, Randy Johnson, Greg Maddux and Roger Clemens.

“I don’t ever think about it. I’ve heard about it a couple times, but it didn’t really cross my mind,” said Greinke, whose teammates were cheering from the dugout. “I still didn’t know anything was going on and then they were a little more excited than normal. I was like, ‘Oh yeah, that’s what happened.’”

Royals: Perez returned after being scratched Friday with blurry vision.

LHP Eric Lauer, who has lost his last three starts, will skip a turn, but will be available out of the bullpen, Brewers manager Craig Counsell said Saturday. Lauer lasted just 3 2/3 innings on Tuesday, giving up four runs — three earned — in a 6-2 loss to the Dodgers. Lauer has given up eight homers and walked 16 in 34 1/3 innings.

With the Royals bullpen giving up the lead, Greinke is winless in his last 21 road starts since a 4-1 victory on Aug. 13, 2021, at Anaheim when he was with Houston. Greinke was 0-11 with a 6.32 ERA in his previous 20 road starts.

KEARNEY, Neb. - The Fort Hays State track and field teams continued last chance weekend Saturday (May 13) with a productive afternoon at the Loper Twilight, recording seven national qualifying marks on the day. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-track-and-field/roster/dayton-williams/7196">Dayton Williams</a>&nbsp;made the most of his last chance opportunity, improving his PR by 1.75 inches with a clearance of 6-11.5 to leap into a tie for 16th on the NCAA DII performance chart. The selection committee takes a minimum of 20 entries in individual open events, 14 in relays and 16 in multi-events. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-track-and-field/roster/philip-landrum/7181">Philip Landrum</a>&nbsp;ran his way into another event at nationals, finishing second with a personal-best time of 20.80. The selection committee takes a minimum of 20 entries in individual open events, 14 in relays and 16 in multi-events. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-track-and-field/roster/philip-landrum/7181">Philip Landrum</a>&nbsp;ran his way into another event at nationals, finishing second with a personal-best time of 20.80. The time currently ranks 12th in the country, while his school-record, conference-championship time of 10.23 in the 100m dash&nbsp;ranks 11th nationally. A prolonged lightning delay created a delay in the availability of results. Six Tigers competed in field events, with four of the six clearing the national qualifying threshold with their performance. After improving his PR by nearly 10 feet last week at the MIAA Championships,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-track-and-field/roster/kolgan-ohl/7186">Kolgan Ohl</a>&nbsp;topped that once again on Friday. He finished fourth with a top toss of 196-9, a mark that currently ranks inside the top 20 in Division II this season, the minimum number of selections for the outdoor championships. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-track-and-field/roster/ryan-stanley/7194">Ryan Stanley</a>&nbsp;finished second after clearing the bar at 17-0.75. The senior has now cleared 17 feet at five of his last six meets entering his eighth and final NCAA Division II Championship. Stanley's school record of 17-7 ranks third in Division II this season. He is one of just nine DII competitors to clear 17 feet this season. 👟 Tigers record four national qualifying marks in the field at Concordia

PHILLIPSBURG – The Hoxie boys and Phillipsburg girls won the
Mid-Continent League track and field meet Friday. 

The Indians won five events and scored 158 points, 42 more
than second place Norton who won six events. Smith Center finished in third
place with 58.5 points. The Panther girls won six events and scored 114 points,
12 more than second place Norton. Ellis finished third with 75.

Hoxie’s Drew Bretz won four gold medals. He won the 400
(51.10) and 800 (2:07.89) and was on the first place 4x400 relay team 3:29.58) along
with Ryan Shaw, Jonathan Mader and Kane Epp. Bretz was also on the first place
4x800 relay team (8:49.23) along with Connor Diercks, Duncan Bell and Levi
Gleason. Hoxie’s other first place finish was from Aaron Keith in the 3200 meters
(10:50.33).

Norton’s Dean Clark also won four gold medals. He won the 100
(11.28) and 200 (23.19) meters along with the triple jump (45-07.50) and he was
on the winning 4x100 relay (44.14) along with Silas Jones, Tyler Backman and Tyce
Melvin. Lucas Kenney won the shot put (49-07.50), Logan Willour the discus
(147-00) and Wyatt Hammond the javelin (189-00).

Russell had two first place finishers. Trey Zorn won the 1600
meters (4:57.26) and Jace Peerman the high jump (6-09.0). 

Smith Center’s Garrett Wanner won both the 110 (15:57) and 300
hurdles (42.12).

Mason Younger of Ellis won the pole vault (12-03.00) and
Plainville’s Carter Cellmer won the long jump (20-09.00).

The Phillipsburg girls were led by Heather Schemper who won the
200 meters (26.42), 400 meters (57.52), the long jump (18-01.0) and she was
also on the winning 4x100 meter relay team along with Kayla Jacobs, Trinitti
Gross and Taryn Sides. Caydence Corman won the pole vault (9-03.0), Austin
Dierking won the shot put (39-06.75) and Kaelyn Means the discus (130-02).

Norton won four events. Mackenzie Clydesdale finished first
in the 800 (2:25.87), Jaelyn Rumback won the 300 hurdles (48:04). Both were a part
of the first place 4x800 relay along with Savana Rumback and Payton Bailey. Jenessa
Ruder javelin (137-08).

Avery Boydston of Ellis won the 1600 (5:45.32) and 3200 meters
(12:02.86).

TMP-Marian’s Shalee Gottschalk won the 100 hurdles (15.98)
and finished second in the 300 hurdles (50.36).

Plainville won three events. Jada Rathbun the 100 meters
(13.40), Gracie Kerns won the triple jump (35-05.5 ) and the 4x100 relay team
of Emily Bainter, Sofie Gourley, Grayce Schieferecke and Madison Maier. (51.74)
also finished in first place.

Oakley’s Bella Hudson won the high jump (5-02.0).

Mid-Continent League track and field meet Friday. The Indians won five events and scored 158 points, 42 more
than second place Norton who won six events. Smith Center finished in third
place with 58.5 points. The Panther girls won six events and scored 114 points,
12 more than second place Norton. Ellis finished third with 75.Hoxie’s Drew Bretz won four gold medals. He won the 400
(51.10) and 800 (2:07.89) and was on the first place 4x400 relay team 3:29.58) along
with Ryan Shaw, Jonathan Mader and Kane Epp. Bretz was also on the first place
4x800 relay team (8:49.23) along with Connor Diercks, Duncan Bell and Levi
Gleason. Hoxie’s other first place finish was from Aaron Keith in the 3200 meters
(10:50.33).Norton’s Dean Clark also won four gold medals. He won the 100
(11.28) and 200 (23.19) meters along with the triple jump (45-07.50) and he was
on the winning 4x100 relay (44.14) along with Silas Jones, Tyler Backman and Tyce
Melvin. Lucas Kenney won the shot put (49-07.50), Logan Willour the discus
(147-00) and Wyatt Hammond the javelin (189-00).Russell had two first place finishers. Trey Zorn won the 1600

MILWAUKEE (AP) — This was the kind of night Owen Miller dreamed of having when he learned he'd be coming home to play for the Milwaukee Brewers.

Miller went 3 for 4 with a homer and a double to back up Corbin Burnes' six shutout innings as the Brewers defeated the Kansas City Royals 5-1 on Friday night.&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/Brewers/status/1657191554602106880">Miller's homer</a>&nbsp;was his first since the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/mlb-sports-oakland-athletics-josh-bell-milwaukee-brewers-d9759d08cd8c8d0a8a76b36244e624b2">Brewers acquired</a>&nbsp;the Wisconsin native from the Cleveland Guardians last December.

“I'll have to go back and listen to (Brewers broadcaster Bob) Uecker on the radio on that one” said Miller, who was born in the Milwaukee suburb of Mequon and played at Ozaukee High School in Fredonia, Wisconsin. “I know my grandma, she'd be proud of that one. She'd always have Uecker on when I was little.”

Miller homered in the third inning, doubled in the fifth and singled and scored in the seventh for his fifth career three-hit game. Three of those games have come against the Royals.

Milwaukee's victory, coupled with the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/mlb-sports-baltimore-orioles-pittsburgh-pirates-washington-nationals-22aef117e7bb046046e976b81792b036">Pittsburgh Pirates' 6-3 loss</a>&nbsp;to the Baltimore Orioles, enabled the Brewers to regain a half-game lead in the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.mlb.com/standings">NL Central.</a>&nbsp;The Brewers have won just three of their last 11 games, but the Pirates have lost 10 of 11.

“We don't want to watch the standings this early in the year,” Burnes said. “I think if we go out and play the baseball we can, all that will take care of itself. Obviously, we haven't played our best baseball probably the last two weeks. There's a lot more in there that we can do better, really all across the board. I think it's going to come down to us playing the best baseball we can and not worrying about what the rest of the league's doing or where the standings are at.”

Burnes (4-2) settled down after some early control issues. He struck out seven and allowed only two hits while throwing a season-high 104 pitches.

“I think the fifth and sixth innings were probably my best innings as far as getting ahead and attacking the zone,” Burnes said. “I've just got to do a better job from the get-go. There's no reason why I shouldn't throw six innings. To do it with 100-plus pitches is a little ridiculous.”

Burnes' four walks were one off his career high, but the Royals failed to capitalize.

“That's what good pitchers do," Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “They find a way. I'm sure he would say that's probably not his best night, best command or whatever, but he found a way to execute.”

Kansas City got just three hits all night and scored its only run on Freddy Fermin’s two-out homer in the seventh off Joel Payamps. The Royals were seeking their first three-game winning streak of the season.

The Brewers took a lead they wouldn’t relinquish by scoring an unearned run off Josh Taylor (0-1) in the first inning. Willy Adames drew a two-out walk, stole second, advanced to third on an error and scored on Christian Yelich’s infield single.

Taylor made his second career start out of 131 appearances and lasted one inning in what was a designed bullpen game for the Royals. Max Castillo replaced Taylor and allowed two runs, three walks and six hits in 4 1/3 innings while throwing 80 pitches.

Miller extended the lead to 2-0 when he led off the third by ripping an 0-2 slider from Castillo into the left-field seats. The 404-foot drive was Miller’s first homer of the season.

Quatraro said Perez already had received treatment from a specialist. “It’s nothing long-term or serious,” Quatraro said.

RHP Zack Greinke (1-4, 5.18 ERA) pitches for the Royals and RHP Adrian Houser (0-0, 3.86) starts for the Brewers on Saturday night.

GARDEN CITY - The Western Athletic Conference title was on the line Friday as the Hays High girls' soccer team traveled to Garden City. The Indians had already defeated the Buffs when they played in Hays in mid-April and a win would lock up the title.

Garden City defeated HHS 1-0 Friday to lock up the league crown.

The Indians had won eight of their prior nine matches and finishes the regular season 11-4 and 6-2 in the Western Athletic Conference.

Garden City finished 5-1-1 in the WAC and 12-2-1 overall.

HAYS - Hays High softball finished up their regular season schedule by hosting Manhattan and Newton on Friday. The Indians win a pitchers dual 1-0 over Manhattan then double-up Newton 4-2 in their regular season finale.

Game 1: Hays 1, Manhattan 0 The first game of the day was a gem between Hays and Manhattan. Aubree Thomas and the Indians' defense worked seven shutout innings before Hays scored the only run of the game.

Riley Dreher singled to lead off the seventh. Lakyn Zimmerman drove a pitch to right center field for a double that sent home Dreher. Those two hits were half of the Hays total for the game.

Thomas (10-3) took the win allowing six hits, walking none and striking out four. Manhattan's Kierra Goos (8-5) threw six innings, striking out twelve and walking just one. She allowed just five baserunners all game.

Manhattan had runners aboard in every inning but one. Their best chance to score came in the fourth with runners at second and third. The third out of the inning came on runner interference on a ball headed to the shortstop.

Game 2: Manhattan 9, Newton 2 Manhattan scored runs in every inning but the first on their way to a 9-2 win over Newton. The Indians recorded 12 hits.

Kierra Goos (9-5) threw all seven innings striking out 12 and walking a pair to earn the victory.

Newton did push two runs across the plate in the sixth inning on a hit, a Manhattan error, passed ball and wild pitch.

Newton had five errors in the game. Abby Koontz took the loss for the Railers.

Manhattan finishes the regular season at 15-5.

Game 3: Hays 4, Newton 2 Hays plated single runs in four different innings to grab a 4-2 win over Newton to close the night. The Railers scored in the top of the first inning on a pair of singles and a double steal.

Hays got the run back in the first when Aubree Thomas moved from first to third on a sacrifice bunt and then made it home on a throwing error. The Indians took the lead for the first time in the first time in the bottom of third on a Newton error.

Newton tied the game one more time at two runs a piece on a solo home run to open up the fourth inning.&nbsp;

Avery Solida scored on a double by Thomas in the fourth and Riley Dreher scored on a passed ball in the fifth for the 4-2 victory.

Thomas (11-3)&nbsp; worked seven innings for a second time on the day for the victory allowing two runs on five hits and striking out seven. It is her 30th career win.

Newton falls to 3-17. Hays ends the regular season at 15-5. Postseason pairings come out on Saturday.

🥎 Hays finishes season with sweep of Manhattan and Newton

HAYS - The TMP-Marian baseball team closed out their regular season with a doubleheader sweep of Garden City Friday at the Monarch Baseball Complex. TMP ended a four-game losing streak with a 17-2 run-rule victory in game one. They took the second contest 13-6.

TMP ends the regular season 6-14. They will play Sacred Heart Monday at 2 p.m. in their 2-1A regional opener in Salina.

Garden City has lost three-straight and five of their last six and ends the regular season 7-13.

Game 1: TMP-Marian 17, Garden City 2 (3 innings) After Garden City scored two runs in the top of the first innings, the Monarchs answered with four in the bottom of the first. They scored 12 in the second and one in the third to end the game by run-rule.

Ian Nehls led the Monarchs offense with four of their 14 hits and three RBIs. Kendall Walker had three hits. Joey Mindrup and Adler Brown both added two hits, Mindrup had TMP's only extra base hit with a double.

Carson Liles allowed both runs on three hits with five strikeouts and two walks over three innings and picked up the win.

Game 2: TMP-Marian 13, Garden City 6 The Monarchs scored nine in the bottom of the sixth to rally from a two-run deficit. Carson Liles tied the game with a one-out double. Adler Brown broke the tie with an RBI double. Freshman Caden Dinkel later blew the game open with a 3-run, inside-the-park home run.

Garden City grabbed the early lead with two runs in the third. The Monarchs answered with three in the bottom of the inning on a passed ball, a bases-loaded walk and sacrifice fly.

The Buffs scored three in the fourth to retake the lead at 5-3. TMP answered with a run in the fifth. Garden City added another run in the top of the sixth to push their lead to 6-2.

Carson Liles had two of TMP's seven hits and drove in two. Dinkel had three RBI's. Brown, Garrett Feauto and Drew Werth all drove in one run.

Ian Nehls allowed one run on three hits over 2 1/3 innings of relief with three strikeouts and no walks and picked up the win.

HAYS, Kan. - Fort Hays State women's basketball coach&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/coaches/talia-kahrs/1137">Talia Kahrs</a>&nbsp;has announced the recent signing of two Kansas Class 5A All-State performers from the Wichita area. Both Landon Forbes of Bishop Carroll Catholic High School and Avery Lowe of Maize South High School will join the Tigers in advance of the 2023-24 season. 🏀 FHSU women announce signing of Wichita players

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State Women's Soccer announced the commitment of junior college transfer Claire Gaeth for the upcoming 2023 season. Gaeth played two years at Fresno City College, where she was a member of a pair of conference championship teams and helped her team to the CCCAA Final Four in 2022. Gaeth was an All-Central Valley Conference First Team selection in 2022 as a defender, helping Fresno City to a record of 17-3-4. She helped the Rams to three playoff wins as they reached the CCCAA Championship Semifinals. Fresno City finished the 2022 season ranked No. 7 in the United Soccer Coaches NJCAA national rankings. Academically she was named to the Fresno City College President's List. Gaeth is a native of Clovis, California, where she was an all-conference performer and served as team captain for Clovis East High School. She spent time with the Fresno Freeze of the Women's Premier Soccer League, starting eight contests and helping the team to a Pac North Conference semifinal appearance. She also spent time in the NorCal Player Development Program.&nbsp;&nbsp;

⚽ California junior college transfer commits to FHSU women

In September, the Wichita State University Board of Trustees
approved funding for phases 1A and 1B for the capital improvement plan to
remake Cessna Stadium into a state-of-the-art home for Wichita State athletics,
university and community events and the Kansas State High School Track and
Field Championship.

“We are planning to host the KSHSAA Track and Field
Championships in Wichita both during, and long after, this renovation project
is complete,” Wichita State director of athletics Kevin Saal said.

·&nbsp;Timing
of all demolition and renovations will be scheduled to avoid interruption of
the Kansas State High School Track and Field Championship in future years.

·&nbsp;Demolition
of the east stands of Cessna Stadium will begin immediately after the state
track meet this year. Phase 1A begins in the fall with work scheduled to begin
on improvements on the east side of the existing track (underground utility
work, seating area for approximately 3,600 with a combination of bleacher seats
and terraces designed for tents, free-standing field lights, fencing, ticket
pavilion, restroom/storage buildings, and plaza).&nbsp;Work is scheduled to be
completed before the 2024 Kansas State High School Track and Field
Championship.

·&nbsp;The
west side of the stadium, capacity around 12,000, will remain standing to allow
for continued operation of the Kansas State High School Track and Field
Championship. Demolition of the west side of the stadium can begin as early as
June 2025.

·&nbsp;Capacity
of the stadium, when completed, is planned for approximately 13,500.

·&nbsp;Phase
1B begins after the 2024 Kansas State High School Track and Field Championship
and includes widening the field and a 9-lane track. Bleacher seating on the
north and south sides of the stadium is included.

·&nbsp;Future
phases include a new west stadium structure with seating for more than 6,000.
The new west stadium would include a single level of press boxes and viewing
decks, offices/locker rooms/team room areas for a future soccer team, as well
as restrooms, concessions and storage

Kansas State High School Track and Field Championship is scheduled for May
