HAYS, Kan. – The 13th annual Tiger Auction and Dinner held in August of 2022 was a tremendous success with $778,501 raised for FHSU Athletics, the most in the history of the event. The previous high for a Tiger Auction and Dinner was $410,842, which occurred in 2021. The event also had a record 779 tickets sold this year Item #40, which focused on the proposed Bickle-Schmidt Athletic Complex, raised $615,000. The new 20,000 square foot facility, which is estimated at $9 million, will not only benefit Tiger Athletics from a functional standpoint, but also serve as a tremendous recruiting tool for future athletes at Fort Hays State University. Lead matching gifts for Item #40 were provided by Jim and Corrine Clark and Darrell and the late Marilynn Seibel. DENVER (AP) — Russell Wilson overcame a slow start and a cascade of boos in his Denver debut Sunday to lead the bungling Broncos past the Houston Texans 16-9 for rookie coach Nathaniel Hackett's first NFL win.

For much of the day, it was just as unsightly as Wilson's return to Seattle six days earlier, replete with a hostile crowd, problematic play calls, red zone quicksand and a profusion of head-scratching penalties.

"All I really care about is the cheers at the end,” Wilson said, “because we won.”

The Broncos (1-1) were flagged 13 times for 100 yards, giving them 25 penalties on the year, their most ever in back-to-back games.

But they pulled it out on defense, holding Houston (0-1-1) to a trio of field goals by Ka'imi Fairbairn.

After completing just six of his first 20 throws, Wilson went 4-for-4 on the Broncos' go-ahead scoring drive that featured a 35-yard strike to a wide-open Courtland Sutton and a&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/Broncos/status/1571633516735238144">22-yard payoff</a>&nbsp;to tight end Eric Saubert that put Denver ahead 13-9 early in the fourth quarter.

“We're of the ‘always improving’ mindset,” Saubert said. "So, we're going to keep getting better every single week. It’s scary what we can do. You know, we get rid of those penalties, we execute in the end zone, we’ll be a really good team.”

Wilson finished 14 of 31 for 219 yards with one TD and an interception. He followed up his only TD throw with a clock-chewing drive that ended with Brandon McManus’ 50-yard field goal with 3:41 remaining for the final margin.

“We have a lot of faith in No. 3,” said Denver defensive Dre'Mont Jones, who had a pair of sacks. “That's why he makes&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/seattle-seahawks-denver-broncos-nfl-sports-5ad015f158bca22da3d711ba8fbff08b">$250 million</a>.”

Davis Mills had the Texans on the move when Randy Gregory registered his first sack for the Broncos just before the two-minute mark to help stall Houston's bid to tie it.

The Texans came in as 10-point underdogs but made the Broncos and their crowd sweat out the possibility of an 0-2 start under Hackett, who had a number of problematic play calls a week after drawing widespread ridicule for taking the ball out of Wilson's hands and attempting a 64-yard field goal in the final minute of a 17-16 loss at Seattle.

Six days after getting mercilessly booed in his return to Lumen Field, Wilson heard the boo-birds at home when he completed 6 of 19 passes in the first half that ended in a 6-6 tie and again when he threw an&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/HoustonTexans/status/1571623794837430276">interception</a>&nbsp;on his first toss of the second half.

Wilson got a&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/Broncos/status/1571598375262490624?s=20&amp;t=IMkGzmTvRP39eFcBfv8WbQ">huge ovation</a>&nbsp;when he ran out of the tunnel and through the smoke, but the love didn't last long as a series of dropped passes and misfires stoked the crowd.

On one of Wilson's incompletions, the Broncos lost wide receiver Jerry Jeudy to a rib injury that the team initially said was an injured right shoulder. It's the second straight September that Jeudy has gotten hurt; he missed two months last season after spraining an ankle in the opener.

The Broncos also lost star cornerback Patrick Surtain II to a shoulder injury and he was replaced by rookie Damarri Mathis, who had five tackles and broke up a pass.

After going 0-for-4 in the red zone at Seattle on Monday night, the Broncos twice drove inside their opponent's 5-yard line in the first half only to come away with field goals.

In the first quarter, Wilson had three incompletions from the Texans 2, including one where Sutton failed to get his left foot down inbounds.

Just before halftime, Wilson threw incomplete to Javonte Williams at the goal line from the 5 when it appeared he could have run it into the end zone himself. Then, after Williams bullied his way to the 1, Wilson lined up in the shotgun and had to throw the ball away, bringing McManus on again for a 24-yarder that tied it with 20 seconds left.

“The reality is we have to play better,” Wilson said.

Fairbairn's 24-yarder put the Texans up 9-6 after linebacker Christian Kirksey wrested the ball from Sutton at the Denver 45-yard line on the second play of the second half.

The Broncos' infractions included a pair of delay-of-game penalties on field-goal attempts. Their four delay penalties so far are twice as many as they had all of last season.

Denver also was whistled for too many men on the field. And the Broncos had to call timeout when they had too few players on a punt — and that missing man was rookie punt returner Montrell Washington.

“We've got to get better at finishing games,” Texans left tackle Laremy Tunsil said after Houston failed to do so for the second straight week. “Once we do that, we'll be a great team.”

Texans running back Dameon Pierce said it's just a matter of sustaining the strong starts: “We were playing at the level about what we need to play, but we just couldn’t pull that rabbit out the hat in the end.”

Houston LB Kevin Pierre-Lewis (groin) left in the third quarter and DB Derek Stingley Jr. left with an unspecified injury. Hackett had no postgame updates on Jeudy or Surtain.

HAYS, Kan. - Fort Hays State played to a 2-2 draw with Emporia State on Sunday at FHSU Soccer Stadium in the MIAA opener. All four goals were scored in the first half. The Hornets now account for two of the Tigers' three ties this season. FHSU moved to 5-0-3 on the year and ESU to 2-4-2, while both moved to 0-0-1 in the conference. The Hornets took the lead early as a corner kick from Joanie Westcoat connected with the head of Hannah Woolery in the ninth minute.

FHSU knotted things up in the 14th&nbsp;minute, also scoring a goal on a header off a corner kick.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6686">Sullivan Kelly</a>&nbsp;delivered a well placed ball to the back post that bounced off the head of&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6688">Hannah Mares</a>&nbsp;in the upper corner of the net for her third goal of the season.

The Tigers kept it rolling later in the period when a shot from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6682">Emily Hutchings</a>&nbsp;was saved and landed in front of&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=7113">Montserrat Diaz</a>&nbsp;who punched it through in the 23rd&nbsp;minute to give the Tigers a 2-1 lead.

The match switched gears in the second half as both defenses locked down. The Hornets managed eight shots and the Tigers took two in the second half. ESU held the final shot advantage 14-9.&nbsp;

BOSTON (AP) — Rafael Devers had four hits and three RBIs, and the Boston Red Sox beat the Kansas City Royals 13-3 on Sunday.

Tommy Pham added three hits and three RBIs, and Kiké Hernández scored four times. Last-place Boston had dropped three of four and seven of 10 overall.

Xander Bogaerts, who can opt out of his contract with the Red Sox at the end of the season, added two hits with an RBI double, raising his average to .316. His double moved him into a tie with Dom DiMaggio (308) for ninth on Boston’s career list.

Bogaerts, who turns 30 on Oct. 1, also got his 1,400th hit, making him the fourth player with Boston to reach that total before turning 30.

“I didn't know about it,” he said. “It's special when you're reaching stuff like that.”

He joined Hall of Famers Carl Yastrzemski, Bobby Doerr and Jim Rice.

“All three of them are much better players than me,” he said. “For me to be on that list is special. On a personal level, how far that I came since I played my first year in the Dominican Summer League. ... It's crazy man. I still feel great, in good shape, hopefully I can do it for a long time.”

Salvador Perez hit a solo homer for Kansas City. Vinnie Pasquantino and Drew Waters each had an RBI double.

Making a 30th start for the second straight year, Boston’s Nick Pivetta (10-11) gave up three runs in five innings.

“It's what I'm built to do, it's what I know how to do and what I expect of myself,” he said. “That's what I train myself for in the offseason.”

Kris Bubic (2-13) lost his seventh straight start, giving up five runs in 2 2/3 innings.

“Every game is going to rotate around the tempo our starters give us and the tone that they set,” Royals manager Mike Matheny said. “In the third, a couple of plays needed to be made behind him.”

Devers’ two-run single made it 7-3 in the fifth. Boston then blew it open with four runs in the sixth.

Boston had a season-high nine doubles after being held without an extra-base hit in consecutive games. It was the first time in 33 years that the Red Sox didn’t collect an extra-base hit in back-to-back games in Fenway Park, the last also against Kansas City from April 22-23, 1989.

With the NFL in its second week, some of the Red Sox discussed their fantasy lineups in the clubhouse before the game.

Manager Alex Cora even joined in when he talked about Pham.

“I know you guys will like this one and you guys can run away with it, but yesterday I heard he’s the best fantasy football player we have,” Cora said. “A lot of connections. ... He knows game plans and all that. He has a lot of people in the league and he takes advantage of that.”

Pham&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/mlb-sports-baseball-cincinnati-reds-d45cffd0884c3695b86fe6742592ee58">was suspended</a>&nbsp;in May for three games after slapping then-Giants outfielder Joc Pederson over a fantasy league disagreement.

Red Sox: RHP Nathan Eovaldi (right shoulder inflammation), who can become a free agent after the season, threw a simulated game off the Fenway mound. He hopes to start at least two more times, with both likely coming at home. “I love pitching here, regardless the time of the year, but with the possibility of these possibly being my last two, I’m excited for them,” he said.

Royals: Open a three-game series at home against the Twins on Tuesday, when RHP Zack Greinke (4-9, 4.10 ERA) is slated to face Minnesota’s RHP Dylan Bundy (8-7, 4.68 ERA).

LAWRENCE –&nbsp;Former Kansas student-athlete, coach and administrator Gerald “Jerry” Waugh died Saturday at his home in Wichita, his family confirmed with KU athletics. Waugh was 95 years old. Waugh was associated with KU since he became a member of the basketball team in 1947. The Wellington, Kan., native was a standout guard and named team captain in his senior season. In 1956, he returned to Kansas as an assistant basketball coach for Dick Harp until 1960. During that time, he pulled double duty as he was also the men’s golf coach from 1958 to 1959. He left KU in 1960, but returned to his alma mater in 1974 to serve as an assistant athletic director where he worked with Olympic sports. Waugh also worked as a liaison between the university and the athletic department, and served as the men’s golf coach once again in 1976. He returned to KU in 1992 to be the head women’s golf coach, where he coached Holly Reynolds to a 15th-place finish in the 1993 NCAA Championship. He retired from coaching in 1999, but still remained a viable part of the University of Kansas. In 1977, Waugh was also the founder and organizer of the K Club Board of Directors. Waugh graduated from Wellington High School in 1945 and then served in the United States Army for 18 months before attending KU. While playing for legendary coach Phog Allen at Kansas, Waugh was the lone non-senior to be a starter his sophomore year. The following season, KU won the conference title and finished runner-up in the league his senior campaign in 1951. Following KU, Waugh first became the high school boys’ basketball coach at Emporia and then returned to Lawrence to coach the Lawrence boys high school team. Then KU head coach Dick Harp hired Waugh as an assistant coach. With Waugh on the KU sidelines in 1957, KU won the conference title and advanced to the NCAA title game with legendary center Wilt Chamberlain. In 1960, Waugh made basketball coaching stops at Arizona, Chico State, and San Francisco State. He then returned to KU in 1974 as an assistant athletics director. In 1977, Waugh was named the chairman of the Kansas Open Golf Tournament, a position he held until 1995. He also served as president and board member of the Kansas Golf Association and was a 10-year member of the United States Golf Association. In 1990, Waugh helped form the Kansas Golf Foundation. JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - Fort Hays State overcame a sluggish start to score 48 unanswered points and beat Lincoln 51-14 Saturday night at Dwight T. Reed Stadium to pick up their first win of the 2022 season.

After stopping FHSU on their first possession, the Blue Tigers (0-3) used a wide receiver pass to take an early 7-0 lead.&nbsp;

Fort Hays State (1-2) only managed to score two field goals following possessions that started deep in Lincoln territory but Ja'Quan Tillis hauled in a 10-yard touchdown pass from Jack Dawson late in the second quarter to give them a 10-7 halftime lead.

FHSU scored four touchdowns and a field goal on their five second half possessions.

The Tigers finished with 478 yards of total offense, 300 through the air and 178 on the ground. Sophomore Jack Dawson made his second start at quarterback for the injured Chance Fuller and completed 16 of 24 passes for 234 yards and two touchdowns. Ethan Forrester went 6-for-7 for 66 yards and a TD.&nbsp;

10 different Tigers caught passes led by Deontay Wilson and Ja'Quan Tillis who had four receptions each. Hunter Budke hauled in three passes for a game-high 103 yards.

FHSU finished with 178 yards on the ground led by Tillis who had a team-high 16 carries for 46 yards.&nbsp;

Jeremiah Jackson-Trotter, Makel Williams, Mason Perez and Daniel Howard led the defense with seven tackles each. Jackson-Trotter had two sacks and Howard along with Hunter Brown had interceptions.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Zamar Brake threw for 126 yards for Lincoln. Omar Allen ran for 52 yards and Aderias Ealy led the Blue Tigers in receiving with 55 yards. Jaylon Mosley led Lincoln with 10 tackles. Fort Hays State will be back at home next Saturday against Missouri Southern who is 2-1 following a win over Central Oklahoma.

“I thought Jalon was excellent today,” Kansas coach Lance Leipold said. “He made some big plays, scrambling, keeping drives alive, saw some things, didn’t hesitate. Statistically, he probably didn’t get off to a great start, but I think again, a very solid day.”

He found 11 different receivers and threw touchdown passes to Torry Locklin, Jared Casey and Luke Grimm.

“We have a lot of people who are able to make plays with the ball in their hands in our offense,” Daniels said. “I feel like (offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki) realizes that, so I feel like he does a great job of being able to put guys in situations to be able to get the ball.”

Kansas finished with 438 yards, including 280 rushing yards. The Jayhawks won back-to-back road games for the first time since 2007.

“It’s huge for this program,” Leipold said about the undefeated start. “It’s huge for these players for everything they’ve gone through, the ones who have persevered through it all.”

🏈 Daniels' 5 touchdowns power Kansas past Houston

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Michael Pratt only cared about one stat — the final score.

Pratt overcame two costly interceptions with a 4-yard touchdown pass to Tyrick James with 4:27 left and Tulane upset Kansas State 17-10 on Saturday.

“It doesn’t really matter what my stats are,” Pratt said. “I could have gone zero for 20 with five interceptions. If we win the game, that’s all I care about.”

K-State came into the game favored by two touchdowns.

The Green Wave stopped the Wildcats on fourth-and-short twice in the third quarter and again in the fourth prior to the game-winning drive. K-State finished 1 for 5 on fourth down.

“The front seven was amazing,” defensive back Macon Clark said. “They did a great job. We wouldn’t have won without them.”

It was Tulane’s first road victory over a Power-5 conference school since beating Rutgers in 2010. Rutgers was part of the Big East that season.

“I’m very proud of the whole team,” head coach Willie Fritz said. “It’s been a long time coming. We’ve worked extremely hard. We’re pumped up and excited. It’s great for the program.”

Fritz showed confidence in his team late in the fourth quarter. Leading by seven points and facing fourth down and less than a yard on their own 29, Fritz kept Pratt and the offense in the game. Pratt gained 2 yards and iced the victory.

“We’d better get it,” Pratt said of the decision. “I talked to the O-line and said, ‘This is one play where you guys have to do whatever you can to finish the game. I knew I had to get it; there’s no other option.”

The two teams came into the game having allowed a combined total of 22 points in two games. It was the second meeting between the two schools. Tulane came from behind to defeat K-State 20-16 in 1988, the year before coach Bill Snyder took over the Wildcats’ program.

Pratt was 13-of-26 passing with a touchdown and two interceptions, but came up big in the clutch for Tulane (3-0). He also had a career high with 87 rushing yards.

“That was a huge part of our game plan,” Pratt said. “They were going to rush three and drop eight to take away the pass. I knew I had to run the ball. I didn’t necessarily think it was going to be that much, but when opportunities present themselves you have to take advantage of them. I think I did.”

Adrian Martinez was 21-of-31 passing for 150 yards and a touchdown for Kansas State (2-1). Running back Deuce Vaughn was held to 81 yards on 20 carries, the first time in nine games that he’s been held to fewer than 100 yards rushing. He was held out of the end zone for the first time in 10 games.

BOSTON (AP) — After scratching out just six runs in a four-game losing streak, the Kansas City batters felt like they owed their pitchers a little more support.

Then they realized Brady Singer didn't really need it.

Singer delivered his second straight scoreless outing, pitching out of a bases-loaded, nobody out jam to deliver six shutout innings on Saturday and help the Royals beat the Boston Red Sox 9-0.

“It was a nice showing from the offense, take a little stress off the pitchers because they’ve been picking us up and we haven’t really been doing anything for them,” said first baseman Vinnie Pasquantino, who had three hits and drove in three runs. “Brady doesn’t need any help, but it’s always nice when we give him something."

Pitching in Fenway Park for the first time, Singer (9-4) won his fifth straight decision, allowing five singles and a walk while striking out five. The 26-year-old College World Series champion from Florida has not allowed a run in 13 innings over two starts, and he has not lost in eight starts since Aug. 3.

On a staff with six-time All-Star and 2009 Cy Young Award winner Zack Greinke, Singer has developed into the No. 1 starter.

“The word ‘ace’ keeps coming out. We’re kind of waiting for one of our guys to take control of that," manager Mike Matheny said. “We have a Hall of Famer with us in Zack, and he’s a guy that’s always going to lead the way. But to have somebody that’s going out on a consistent basis and giving us the kinds of starts, keeping us in games, at times even dominant. He’s just taking it to another level.”

MJ Melendez scored four runs and also had three hits for the Royals. The first four batters in the Kansas City lineup went 10 for 20 with eight RBIs.

PLAINVILLE – The TMP-Marian Monarchs ran their win streak to
three games in-a-row to open the season for the first time since 2011 with a
27-13 win over Plainville Friday night in Plainville.

After the Monarchs (3-0) turned the ball over on downs on
their first possession Michael Hale forced a fumble by the Cardinals
quarterback AJ Brown setting up a 47-yard touchdown run by TMP’s Kade Harris,
his first of three on the night, putting TMP up 7-0 with 3:25 to play in the
first quarter.

The Monarchs deference held Plainville’s offense in-check
all night long, holding them up 100 total yards of offense.

In the first half TMP forced the Cardinals (0-3) into four
punts a fumble and a missed field goal as the Monarchs built a 21-0 halftime
lead. 

Harris had a pair of first-half rushing touchdowns and then
mid-way through the second quarter Griffin Schumacher broke free for a 56-yard
touchdown run for the three-score lead.

In the second half TMP strung together a seven-play drive
that featured a 43-yard run by Carson Liles and was capped off by Harris’ third
rushing touchdown of the game, a six-yard run with just over seven minutes left
in the third quarter.

After forcing another punt TMP got the ball back with just
over four and a half minutes left in the third quarter but Kyle Werner
intercepted a Liles pass attempt and returned it for a 57-yard touchdown
putting Plainville on the board at 27-6.

TMP went three-and-out on their next possession deep in
their own territory and a bad punt gave Plainville the ball at the TMP eight yard-line.
Brown’s two-yard touchdown run made it 27-13.

In the fourth quarter both teams dealt with injuries to key players
and neither team was able to get on the scoreboard with TMP earning the 27-13
victory.

TMP amassed more than 270 yards rushing for a third straight
game. Kade Harris rushed for 128 yards and three touchdowns and Griffin Schumacher
add 87 yards and a touchdown.

TMP has won three straight over Plainville and will host Scott
City for homecoming next Friday.

HAYS - #5-5A Hays High hosted a state ranked showdown with the #1 team in 6A, the Manhattan Indians Friday night at Lewis Field Stadium. Hays took just 11 seconds to put points on the board when Malik Bah broke free for an 80 yard touchdown run. The extra point missed for an 6-0 lead. The Indians punted on their next four series.&nbsp;

Manhattan was three and out on the first possession but moved into the Indians' red zone on the next three. They missed a 32 yard field goal, scored a touchdown and kicked a 28 yard field goal for a 10-6 lead.

Manhattan had the chance to get back-to-back possession around the halftime break before they turned it over for the first time. Grayson Walburn forced a fumble after a completed pass that Evan Lind picked up and returned for a 25 yard touchdown. Conner Dreiling hit Ben Pfeifer on a two point conversion for a 14-10 lead with 1:27 left before half.

Manhattan scored on their first two drives of the second half to grab a 24-14 lead. The score would remain the same for the next seventeen game minutes.

During that time Hays started in Manhattan territory twice. The first opportunity began at the 49 yard line following a three and out and short punt by Manhattan. Hays punted just three plays later.&nbsp;

Wyatt Waddell intercepted his third pass in two games to give the offense the ball back at the Manhattan 31. Hays fumbled on the very next play.

Manhattan changed the scoreboard with an all run series of 8 plays 56 yards to take a 31-14 lead.

Malik Bah caught a Kyrese Groen pass for a 73 yard touchdown to close the scoring at 31-21.

Hays falls to 2-1 on the year and resumes WAC play next week in Garden City. Manhattan improves to 3-0.

The Kansas Shrine Bowl on Friday announced Hays High School head coach Tony Crough will lead the West team in the Shrine Bowl in July 2023.

Crough was an assistant for the West team in 2022. The East head coach will be Clint Rider, head coach of Blue Valley Northwest.

The Shrine Bowl also announced Friday Mammoth, a design-build sports construction partner will be the game’s first-ever presenting sponsor for its 50th&nbsp;game on July 15 at Lewis Field at Fort Hays State University.&nbsp;

As title sponsor, the event will officially be called the 50th&nbsp;Kansas Shrine Bowl Presented by Mammoth.&nbsp;

The Shrine Bowl and Mammoth unveiled the 50th&nbsp;Game badge at the at the Hays Convention and Visitors Bureau  Friday.&nbsp;

"We're thrilled to be celebrating this incredible milestone in Hays. I'm confident Fort Hays State and the community of Hays will be a gracious and supportive host for our 50th event,” said Shrine Bowl Executive Director B.J. Harris.

"We look forward to celebrating with our alumni, Shriners, and anyone who has helped build the Kansas Shrine Bowl into a premiere fundraising event. We're equally excited to see how the momentum from our 2023 game can propel us into the next 50 years."&nbsp;

Since its first event in 1974, the Kansas Shrine Bowl raised more than $3 million for Shriners Children’s. The event is known nationwide as one of the largest Shrine Bowls, with opportunities for high school all-star football players, cheerleaders, and band members. The Shrine Bowl weekend is full of celebratory festivities, including a banquet, golf tournament and clinics.&nbsp;

“We are honored to get behind the mission of the Shrine Bowl, the patients Shriners support, and all the participants and families,” Mammoth CEO Jake Farrant said. “This is a 50-year tradition that keeps getting better. We can’t wait for the game!”&nbsp;

Anyone who is part of the Shrine Bowl’s history as a player, cheerleader, band, ambassador or any kind of involvement is invited to the 50th&nbsp;event.&nbsp;

The timing of Friday’s title sponsorship announcement coincided with the broadcast of Shriners 100th anniversary special airing on ABC affiliates around the country titled “Miracles Magic &amp; Milestones.” A 30-minute TV special hosted by Kristen Bell, the program features patient stories, surprise guests, and a celebration of 100 years of Shriners being the premiere health care organization for children.&nbsp;

The Kansas Shrine Bowl has sent over $3 million to Shriners Children’s.&nbsp;The game has been played throughout Kansas each summer since 1974.
