JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - The Fort Hays State track and field teams had an impressive day on day two of the 2023 MIAA Outdoor Championships Saturday (May 6), picking up two individual championships, five All-MIAA performances, 14 national qualifying marks and one school record.
Both the Tiger men and women sit in fourth place in the team standings, with the men accumulating 32.5 points and the women compiling 32 points.
Philip Landrum is on to the finals of the 100m dash after a lightning-quick time of 10.23 that broke a 21-year-old school record. Landrum had the second-fastest time in the field and currently ranks inside the top 10 on the NCAA DII national performance chart.
Nolan Churchman completed the 2023 multi-event conference sweep, winning the decathlon outdoors after finishing first in the heptathlon indoors back in February. The Saint George, Kan. native completed the 10 events with 7,158 points, currently seventh on the NCAA DII national performance list this season and just 34 shy of his own school record. It is his eighth All-MIAA medal and his third conference title.
Two-time national champion Ryan Stanley now has a pair of MIAA titles after winning the pole vault with a top clearance of 17-5. The senior earned his fifth trip to the All-MIAA podium in the process. As the lone individual to clear 17-5, Stanley lifted the bar to 17-7.75 in an attempt to break his own school record as well as the meet record. He made three great attempts at the record jump, narrowly clipping the bar each time.
Mattie Rossi earned her fifth All-MIAA medal with a second-place finish in the heptathlon. The senior improved her national qualifying mark by more than 200 points, moving into the top 10 on the national qualifying list with a seven-event total of 5,163. It was the second All-MIAA honor for Rossi in the heptathlon.
Regan Hodsden picked up her third trip to the All-MIAA podium with a second-place finish in the 10,000m run. She completed the race in 36:57.85, third-quickest at FHSU during the DII era, to earn eight team points. Jaycee Vath was sixth in the same race after crossing the line in 37:45.27, ranking her sixth on the FHSU DII era chart.
Addie Berens earned a spot on the All-MIAA podium for the third year in a row after placing third in the javelin throw with a top toss of 139-10. Rhyann Brown was fifth in the field with a top mark of 139-0, with the duo combining for 10 team points.
Kolgan Ohl added five team points with a fourth-place finish in the hammer throw. The junior added nearly 10 feet to his personal best, recording a top toss of 196-5 on his fourth attempt of the day. He is now fifth on the FHSU DII era performance list and he currently ranks inside the top 20 in DII this season.
After establishing a new PR at the FHSU Alex Francis Classic last week in Hays, Xavier Robinson cleared a personal-best 23-11 in the long jump to place sixth and earn three team points.
Chloe Stanley racked up 4,660 points in the heptathlon to finish in sixth place, receiving three team points and adding 130 points to her personal-best. She now ranks fourth at FHSU during the NCAA DII era.
Rossi and Stanley later qualified for the finals in the 400m hurdles alongside teammate Taylor Savolt. Savolt was second in the field with a national-qualifying time of 1:00.74, while Rossi qualified fifth with a time of 1:01.41. Stanley secured the eighth and final spot in the finals after crossing the line in 1:02.93. Rossi will also run in the finals of the 100m hurdles after qualifying seventh with a time of 14.28.
Winner of the 100m dash at each of the last two MIAA Outdoor Championships, Lyric Holman secured a chance to make it three in a row when she qualified fifth with a time of 11.66. She will also run in the finals of the 200m dash after qualifying second with a season-best time of 23.98.
Emily Salmans moved on to the finals in the 800m run with a time of 2:13.54, fourth-fastest in the prelims. Faith Little was 12th on the day with a personal-best time of 2:16.27, moving her up one spot to seventh on the NCAA DII performance chart.
Hayden Albright will run in the finals of the 400m dash after finishing seventh in the prelims with a time of 47.65. The personal-best time is a national qualifier and moves Albright to fifth at FHSU during the DII era.
A trio of Tigers will run in the 800m run finals after Trever Medina (third, 1:51.93), Ethan Lang (fifth, 1:51.87) and Aaron Mangan (sixth, 1:52.15) all finishing inside the top eight in prelims.
Jaret Pfizenmaier contributed two team points after finishing seventh in the 10,000m run with a time of 31:39.46.
The festivities will wrap up on Sunday, with field events beginning at 10:30 a.m. and track events starting at 1:30 p.m.
