HAYS - The Hays High baseball team’s comeback attempt in their final game of the Diamond Classic in Hays came up short of the close out the weekend with a 7-4 loss the Life Prep on Saturday.
The Fire jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, scoring a run in the first and two more in the second.
Hays got on the board in the bottom of the third, scoring on an error by the Fire.
Life Prep score two more run in each the fifth and sixth inning and held a 7-1 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh inning.
In the inning, the Indians scored three times with two outs.
The first run of the inning scored on an error, Corbin Werth followed with a two-run double making it 7-4, but the Indians could get no closer, dropping the final game of the Diamond Classic.
Greg Hughes suffered the loss for the Indians. He allowed four runs on five hits with four walks and six strikeouts.
Cooper Sanders, Hughes and Werth collected the only three hits for the Indians.
Hays finished 2-2 at the Diamond Classic and are 10-8 on the season.
The Indians are off until regionals begin May 15th.
