first win against West Virginia in Morgantown on an 86-yard interception return
for a touchdown, sophomore cornerback Cobee Bryant was named the Big 12
Conference Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday. 
Bryant’s Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week honor marks the second-straight
for Kansas, after Lonnie Phelps was named Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week
on September 5. This marks the first time in program history that Kansas has
won Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week honors in back-to-back weeks. 
Bryant, of Evergreen, Alabama, jumped West Virginia quarterback JT Daniels'
pass in overtime and took it 86 yards for his second-career interception return
for a touchdown (2021 at Texas). The touchdown was Bryant's second of the
season, after returning a blocked field goal for a touchdown in the season
opener against Tennessee Tech. 
Bryant also added four tackles and a pass breakup in the Jayhawks' win. 
Kansas will travel to Houston, Texas to take on the Houston Cougars on
Saturday, September 17 at TDECU Stadium at 3 p.m. CT. The Jayhawks will then
return home to host the Duke Blue Devils on Saturday, September 24.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

career, Kansas State senior Phillip Brooks has been named the Big 12
Special Teams Player of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday.

The honor comes on the heels of Brooks’ 76-yard punt return
touchdown in K-State’s 40-12 victory over Missouri on Saturday, the fourth
punt-return score of his career. He was first honored following the Kansas game
in 2020 after returning two punts for touchdowns.

With K-State holding a 14-3 lead, Brooks provided a quick
spark on the second play after a lightning delay of nearly an hour. The Lee’s
Summit, Missouri product fielded the punt and alluded one defender before
cutting across the field toward the Wildcat sideline and using a wall of
protection on the way to the longest punt return of his career to put K-State
up three scores.

Brooks now ranks first in school history with a career
punt-return average of 17.7 yards, while the four punt-return touchdowns in his
career rank second in K-State history. Both of those figures lead the nation
among active FBS players. He also ranks eighth in school history with 549
career punt-return yards.

A wide receiver who has started 18 games in his career,
Brooks also crossed the 1,000-yard threshold in career receiving yards against
the Tigers, a mark that now stands at 1,008 as he became the 34th player
in school history to accomplish the feat. Brooks is also one of 33 players in
K-State history with at least 2,000 career all-purpose yards, entering this
week’s game with 2,160 yards.

K-State, 2-0 for the third time in four years under head
coach Chris Klieman, closes out non-conference action this Saturday
against Tulane inside Bill Snyder Family Stadium. A limited number of scattered

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Kansas City coach Andy Reid looked slightly perplexed during Sunday's postgame press conference when asked why his quarterback Patrick Mahomes is so good in season openers.

“He’s pretty good all the time,” he said with a slight grin. “We're lucky to have him.”

Mahomes threw for 360 yards and five touchdowns, Clyde Edwards-Helaire caught two touchdown passes and the Chiefs rolled to an impressive 44-21 road win over the Arizona Cardinals in the opener for both teams.

The game was never in doubt after the opening minutes, with Mahomes picking apart the Cardinals’ defense with his usual array of good decisions and deft passing touch. The quarterback was playing his first NFL game against Kliff Kingsbury, who coached Mahomes in college at Texas Tech and now leads the Cardinals.

The student put on quite a show for his mentor: The 2018 MVP threw three touchdown passes on Kansas City’s first three drives.

After his fourth touchdown, he turned toward the Cardinals' sideline for a little trash talk,&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/Chiefs/status/1569089010869637121">holding up four fingers to remind them</a>&nbsp;of the damage he had already caused against the Arizona defense.

Mahomes said no matter how successful he becomes, he'll always feel like the underdog. He's now 5-0 in season openers, throwing 18 touchdowns and zero interceptions.

“I'm just a guy from Texas Tech they said couldn't play in the NFL,” Mahomes said. “I've always had that mindset of proving we're the Kansas City Chiefs, we still can win the AFC Championship, win the AFC West and win the Super Bowl.”

Tight end Travis Kelce caught eight passes for 121 yards and a touchdown. It was his 30th career game with at least 100 yards receiving. Kansas City outgained Arizona 488 yards to 282. Mahomes completed 30 of 39 passes.

“We always believed we were going to go out there and put on a show,” Mahomes said. “Guys did that.”

Kansas City jumped out to a 7-0 lead on the opening drive, capping an 11-play, 75-yard march with a 9-yard touchdown pass from Mahomes to Kelce. The Chiefs pushed ahead 14-0 later in the first on a nifty play from Mahomes, who threw an underhanded shovel pass to Edwards-Helaire for the 3-yard score.

The Chiefs led 23-7 by halftime after Harrison Butker, who missed part of the first half with a left ankle injury, made a 54-yard field goal with two seconds left in the second quarter.

Kansas City — which is trying to make the AFC title game for a fifth straight season — had a 37-7 advantage by the fourth quarter.

It was a rough start for Arizona, which also suffered through a brutal ending to 2021. The Cardinals have lost six of seven games dating to last season, including the playoffs.

“They beat us in every way,” Kingsbury said. “There is no denying it, no hiding from it. We didn’t execute in any phase and they played at a high level.”

Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray was playing his first game since being rewarded with a $230.5 million, five-year contract during the offseason. He finished 22-of-34 passing for 193 yards and two touchdowns, though much of that production came when the Chiefs already had control of the game.

“You can either start sulking about it or look in the mirror for what it is,” Murray said. “It's a long season. We got punched in the mouth. How do you respond?”

The Cardinals came into Week 1 missing some of their best players. Three-time All-Pro receiver DeAndre Hopkins was suspended for the season's first six games after violating the NFL's performance-enhancing drug policy. Star defensive lineman J.J. Watt was inactive because of a calf injury.

Butker left the game in the first quarter because of an ankle injury, so the Chiefs turned to safety Justin Reid to handle the job.

Reid was made 1 of 2 attempts on extra points and also blasted a kickoff through the back of the end zone for a touchback. The safety was prepared for his role as the emergency kicker: He made an extra point during a preseason game.

Butker returned late in the second quarter.

Mahomes completed touchdown passes on the first three drives of Kansas City's season. He's the second quarterback to do that since at least 1991. The other was Green Bay's Aaron Rodgers in 2011.

Chiefs: RG Trey Smith (ankle) left the game in the first half and didn't return. ... CB Trent McDuffie (hamstring) left the game in the second half. ... Mahomes fell on his left wrist during the first quarter, which is his non-throwing arm. The quarterback said he was sore, but postgame tests didn't reveal any structural damage.

Cardinals: Arizona entered the game with a banged-up roster, especially considering this is the first week of the season. WR Rondale Moore (hamstring), CB Trayvon Mullen (toe), OL Justin Pugh (neck) and Watt were all inactive because of injuries.

Chiefs: Host the Chargers on Thursday night.

Cardinals: Travel to face the Raiders next Sunday.

The Tigers move to 4-0-2 on the year and the Hornets tie for the first time moving to 1-4-1. The Emporia State offense was very active in the first half as they took ten shots with four on target. After a scoreless first half, the Hornets broke through when Aislinn Hughes headed in a corner from Joanie Westcoat. The Tigers found the equalizer in the 80th&nbsp;minute when a&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6687">Reilly Madden</a>&nbsp;free kick was knocked out of the box by a Hornet defender and directed to Wiman, who delivered a strike of magic from well outside the box by chipping the ball perfectly over the keeper's head into the upper left corner of the net. The Hornets finished with 18 shots, eight on target, compared to seven shots by the Tigers, with three placed on goal. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Brady Singer threw seven scoreless innings to lead the Kansas City Royals to a 4-0 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Sunday to salvage the finale of the three-game series.

Detroit was shut out for the 20th time this season, the most in the majors and five more than the next-closest teams, Kansas City and Pittsburgh.

Singer (8-4) allowed four hits and one walk with six strikeouts, and he retired 16 of the last 18 batters he faced. The Royals have won six of his last seven starts; he is 4-0 with a 2.25 ERA over that span.

“I wanted to get deep into that game, as deep as I could,” Brady said. “I think I came out well on the attack. The slider was kind of a pitch today that helped me the most. The fastball kind of came later in the game.”

Royals manager Mike Matheny said: “It was Brady as good as we’ve seen him all season. He had six strikeouts today, the majority with the slider, but the sinker was good, too. They played off each other really well.”

In 10 career starts against Detroit, Singer is 6-0 with a 2.44 ERA; 35 % of his 17 career victories have come at the Tigers’ expense.

“I don’t care who Brady was facing (today),” Matheny said. “The way he threw the ball, he was going to do very well.”

Kansas City got on the board early with Nick Pratto’s sacrifice fly scoring Bobby Witt Jr. in the first inning.

Witt had a pair of hits, including a double for his 51st extra-base hit, leading all major league rookies. Each of the Royals’ RBIs were contributed by rookies.

Drew Waters’ two-out double into the right-field corner scored Michael A. Taylor and Nate Eaton to expand Kansas City’s lead to 3-0 in the second inning.

In the fourth, Michael Massey jumped on Tyler Alexander’s first pitch, driving a cut fastball just fair down the right-field line. Massey’s second homer of the season made it 4-0.

“The hitting (coaches) did a great job with the (pregame) report and just from watching the game, I could tell he liked to get ahead,” Massey said. “I was just trying to get a good pitch early and I was able to put a pretty good swing on it.”

Alexander (3-10) went five innings, allowing four runs on six hits and a walk.

Spencer Torkelson had the Tigers’ only extra-base hit, a one-out double in the seventh.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — Jalon Daniels threw three touchdown passes, including one in overtime, and cornerback Jacobee Bryant returned an interception for a score on the final play as Kansas beat West Virginia 55-42 in their Big 12 opener on Saturday night.

Kansas (2-0, 1-0 Big 12) has won its first two games of the season for the first time since 2011.

“For us to get off to a 2-0 start and keep stacking (good) days the best we can, it says a lot," Kansas coach Lance Leipold said. “But it will only mean a lot if we go out and play well again.”

West Virginia rallied from an 11-point deficit in the fourth quarter to send the game into overtime tied at 42.

After Daniels found Quentin Skinner with a 4-yard scoring pass in overtime, Bryant stepped in front of JT Daniels’ pass intended for West Virginia’s Bryce Ford-Wheaton and ran 86 yards untouched into the end zone to end the game.

The Mountaineers (0-2, 0-1) have lost their first two games for the first time since 1979.

Jalon Daniels had another efficient passing game and was especially elusive with his legs. He ran for a career-high 85 yards, eclipsing the 45 yards he had in a win over Texas last year.

“I’m not somebody who’s gonna turn down any kind of contact,” he said. "I play quarterback but at the end of the day, we’re trying to move the sticks. The game of football is to be able to keep getting yards, moving the sticks, and get into the end zone. I’m gonna do what I have to do.”

In his last six starts, Daniels has completed 70% of his passes. He finished 18 of 29 for 219 yards on Saturday.

Devin Neal had two rushing touchdowns and a 17-yard TD catch from Daniels. Daniel Hishaw had a pair of scoring runs, including a 30-yarder early in the fourth quarter to put Kansas ahead 42-31.

Down 42-34, the Mountaineers got the ball back on a punt with 2:17 left. Kaden Prather caught a tipped pass and ran 25 yards to the Kansas 23. JT Daniels found a sliding Ford-Wheaton with a 21-yard pass to set up CJ Donaldson's short TD run with 35 seconds left. Daniels and Ford-Wheaton hooked up again on the tying 2-point conversion pass in the back of the end zone.

In overtime, Kansas got the ball first and appeared to be going nowhere when Torry Locklin was tackled for a 6-yard loss on third-and-5 from the 20. But West Virginia's Taijh Alston was flagged for roughing the passer to give Kansas a first down at the 10. Three plays later, Jalon Daniels found Skinner for a 49-42 lead.

On West Virginia's possession, Daniels was hit by Kansas defensive lineman Malcolm Lee on second down. The ball came loose and a review confirmed that Daniels' arm had moved forward for an incomplete pass. On the next play, Bryant intercepted JT Daniels' pass intended for Bryce-Ford Wheaton.

“I think that corner did a really good job. He jumped it," JT Daniels said. "You give credit where it’s due. That's the name of the game. It's a crazy sport. You can play really, really well until the end, then one play can really decide a game.”

JT Daniels had first-half TD tosses of 59 yards to Sam James and 67 and 5 yards to Ford-Wheaton. Daniels finished 28 of 40 for 355 yards. Ford-Wheaton finished with 11 catches for 152 yards.

It marked the second straight game that Bryant scored a touchdown. He&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/college-football-sports-kansas-lawrence-nebraska-cornhuskers-1e627f97dad0bbe7dff83ffa88689c5a">returned a blocked field goal</a>&nbsp;61 yards for a TD last week against Tennessee Tech.

Leipold said he yelled at Bryant from the sideline to fall to the ground after the overtime interception.

"He listens real well, doesn’t he?” Leipold said.

Kansas: The Jayhawks refused to quit after trailing 21-7. Kansas converted 11 of 15 times on third down in winning for just the second time in 12 meetings with West Virginia. After Kansas rushed for 297 yards a week ago, they had 200 yards against the Mountaineers, an average of 5.6 yards per run.

West Virginia: The Mountaineers outgained Kansas 501-419 but didn't take advantage. Donaldson, a freshman who ran for 125 yards on just seven carries in a loss at Pittsburgh a week ago, had trouble finding holes against Kansas and was limited to 48 yards on 13 carries.

Kansas plays at No. 25 Houston next Saturday.

West Virginia hosts Towson next Saturday.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Victor Reyes drove in three runs, and the Detroit Tigers beat the Kansas City Royals 8-4 in a rain-shortened game on Saturday.

Javier Báez and Harold Castro each had two hits and two RBIs as Detroit earned its third straight win. Matt Manning (2-2) pitched 6 1/3 innings of three-hit ball.

“I think my curveball and my changeup were really good to the lefties,” Manning said. “My good fastball command kind of follows after that.”

The Tigers went ahead to stay with three runs in the third against Jonathan Heasley (3-8). Reyes snapped a 1-1 tie with an RBI triple. Báez doubled in Reyes and then scored on Castro’s single.

“Taking the ball to the middle part of the field has been a difference maker for (Báez),” Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said. “It’s a good sign.”

Reyes added a two-run single during Detroit’s four-run fifth, helping the Tigers build an 8-2 lead.

“We were aggressive,” Reyes said. “We knew (Heasley) had a very good outing his last outing. So we took advantage of that to be aggressive.”

Heasley was charged with seven runs and seven hits in four-plus innings. The right-hander had gone 2-1 with a 2.86 ERA in his previous four starts.

Manning allowed two earned runs, struck out four and walked one. Since returning from the IL on Aug. 2, Manning has a 3.74 ERA over eight starts.

“He had the lead, so he could be a little bit more liberal with the strike zone and try to get through the game,” Hinch said. “He had to keep his focus and get us as deep as he could, and he did that.”

“It makes it a lot easier,” Manning said of pitching with the lead. “You don’t really have to hold your breath because you have confidence in your guys to put a few on the board.”

It’s the longest win streak for Detroit since a string of six straight victories in July.

Salvador Perez had two hits for Kansas City and drove in a run.

Kerry Carpenter homered for Detroit in the second, tying it at 1. The Tigers, last in the majors with 88 homers, have hit eight in the past three games.

“Hitting is contagious,” Carpenter said. “We’ve always heard that growing up and I really believe in that. It’s really cool to see all the other guys sticking to their approaches and executing well. That gives us confidence to go up there and do the same thing. It’s been fun the past couple of days.”

Saturday’s game was moved to the afternoon to avoid anticipated inclement weather, but it was played in a steady drizzle and then stopped in the bottom of the eighth after a 58-minute delay.

“There was a couple times it was coming down pretty good,” Kansas City manager Mike Matheny said. “I didn't know if they were going to pull us off the field or not, and then it got up the point where the field was really rough.”

Detroit collected three triples for its highest total in a single game since Sept. 1, 2012. It has 18 extra-base hits in its last three games.

🏐 Late rally lifts Hornets past Tigers in five

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — The century-old rivalry between Kansas State and Missouri still means something in Big 12 country, more than a decade after the Tigers bolted the league for the SEC, and that was evident this week when Wildcats coach Chris Klieman asked players who grew up across the border to talk about it.

One that addressed the team was Phillip Brooks, who grew up near Kansas City and dreamed of wearing black and gold.

“I didn't work out,” he said Saturday, “so I had this one circled on my calendar.”

Brooks made the most of his chance against the Tigers, too. He returned a punt 76 yards for a score, helping the Wildcats lay a 40-12 beating through a driving rainstorm on their longtime rival in their first meeting since 2011.

Deuce Vaughn added 145 yards rushing and two touchdowns, Adrian Martinez threw for 101 yards and ran for a score, and the Kansas State defense picked off Missouri on four straight possessions in the second half to seal the win.

“The landscape of college football is changing. Kansas State wants to be part of the haves,” Klieman said. “Wins like this elevate you among the haves. We have a good football team, but we have a lot of guys with chips on their shoulder.”

The Wildcats (2-0) picked off Brady Cook twice in the second half, then did the same to backup Jack Abraham, before Tigers coach Eli Drinkwitz put his starter back in for the fourth quarter. But by that point, the Wildcats had extended their lead to 33-6 and the only drama left was whether they would keep the Tigers (1-1) out of the end zone.

The Tigers finally got in on the game's final play, thanks to a series of timeouts and an untimed down following a penalty.

“One game doesn't define the season. How we respond will,” Drinkwitz said. “There's going to be a lot of negative thoughts and opinions out there about it, but this team has to stay together.”

Cook finished 15 of 27 for 128 yards while Abraham missed all three of his throws — unless you count the two caught by the Wildcats. Cook did have 56 yards rushing, but a good chunk of that came while running from pressure.

The game began under light rain that soon turned into a driving storm, making things seem even worse for the Tigers. They drove for a field goal to open the game, then punted four straight times; three of those were three-and-outs.

Meanwhile, the Kansas State offense plugged along with ruthless efficiency.

Martinez led a 75-yard march following Harrison Mevis' field goal, and Vaughn barreled in from just outside the goal line to give the Wildcats a 7-3 lead. Then it was Martinez who capped the next drive with a 16-yard run, though it took a big block by the pint-sized Vaughn on Missouri safety Jaylon Carlies to spring him to the end zone.

Nothing got better for the Tigers during the hour-long lightning delay.

They ran one offensive play before punting to Brooks, who fielded it cleanly and made the first defender miss. Then, the speedster raced to the Kansas State sideline, bent upfield and saw nobody standing between him and the endzone.

His fourth career punt return touchdown gave the Wildcats a 20-3 halftime lead.

They slowed down offensively in the second half, when penalties kept spoiling drives and Chris Tennant's kicking woes continued with a short miss. But the Tigers were even more inept — interceptions ended four straight drives — and Tennant finally knocked through a field goal to extend the lead to 26-6 entering the fourth quarter.

Vaughn and D.J. Giddens tacked on touchdown runs to put away the Wildcats' longtime rival.

“It's a big-time win,” Vaughn said. “A lot of kids on this team are from Missouri. They were overlooked by Missouri. It means a lot to us to get the win the way we did.”

Missouri couldn't overcome the eight penalties, four turnovers and myriad mental lapses that kept sending their offense to the sideline. The Tigers eventually wore down on defense, allowing Kansas State to cruise to the finish.

Kansas State was far from perfect, failing to fully capitalize on Missouri's turnovers thanks to plenty of penalties of its own. And with Oklahoma awaiting in two weeks, the clock is running on the Wildcats to clean those mistakes up.

Missouri returns home to play Abilene Christian in its nonconference finale Saturday.

Kansas State wraps up its nonconference slate when Tulane visits Saturday.

GREAT BEND - Hays High needed just 14 plays to score their first four touchdowns Friday night in Great Bend and cruise to a 33-7 win over the Panthers.

Malik Bah scored two of the four touchdowns, the first from 48 yards and the second on a 6 yard run. Kyreese Groen threw to scoring passes to Keamonie Archie. The first hookup was from 13 yards out and the second accounted for 75 yards.

Defensively the Indians forced four punts on the Panthers six first half series. Wyatt Waddell grabbed two interceptions in the second quarter. The first occurred in the red zone on the only drive that Great Bend crossed the 50 yard line in the first half. The second was an impressive pick when Waddell tipped a pass out of the quarterback's hands then dove to grab his own deflection.

Hays held onto the ball for six minutes to open the second half while covering 66 yards in 13 plays when Groen scored from five yards out giving Hays a 33-0 lead.&nbsp;

The Indians spent the last 18 minutes of the game rotating in new players into the game.&nbsp;

Great Bend did manage their lone touchdown in the fourth quarter on a Cayden Scheuerman nine yard run that capped a seven play 61 yard drive.

Malik Bah ran for 212 yards and two scores on 19 carries, his second consecutive week rushing for over 200 yards. Groen threw for 108 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Hays compiled 492 yards offense, 373 on the ground.&nbsp;

The defense allowed just 182 yards, 97 rushing and 85 passing.

Hays improves to 2-0 on the season and starts the WAC race at 1-0. Great Bend falls to 0-2, 0-1 and has lost 19 straight games.&nbsp;

The Indians will host the Manhattan Indians next Friday at Lewis Field Stadium.

HAYS – The TMP-Marian Monarchs racked up more than 300 yards
rushing for a second straight was on their way to a 35-0 win over the Ellis
Railroaders Friday night at Lewis Field in Hays.

TMP could not ask for a better start to the game when
freshman defensive back Carson Liles intercepted the Ellis quarterback on the
first play of the game setting TMP up at their own 47 yard line.

It took the Monarchs just two plays to cover 53 yards and go
up 7-0 thanks to a 44 yard touchdown from Griffin Schumacher.

On their second possession of the game Ellis turned the ball
over on downs at their own 34 yard line.

The Monarchs had back-to-back false starts moving the ball
to the 44 yard line and on the first play of the drive Kade Harris scored from 44
yards out putting TMP up 14-0 with more than eight minutes left in the first
quarter.

Harris added the second of his three touchdowns in the first
half on a three-yard run that capped off an eight-play drive with 2:54 left in
the first quarter for a 21-0 TMP lead.

Leading 21-0 with just over seven minutes left in the first
half TMP was faced with a fourth and 21 from the TMP 49 yard line when Harris
picked his way through the Ellis defense for a 51 touchdown run giving TMP a
28-0 lead.

TMP’s final score of the first half was a 74 yard touchdown
run from Schumacher of the first play of the drive with just under 3:30 left in
the second quarter.

TMP built a 35-0 first half lead and went on to win by that
score holding Ellis scoreless for the second straight meeting.

TMP has also now won six straight against their MCL rivals
and start the year 2-0 for the first time since 2011.

Harris finished with three touchdowns and 125 rushing yards.
Schumacher crossed the century mark for the second week in-a-row with 132 yards
and two touchdowns. The Monarchs as a team outgained Ellis 336 to 165.

The Monarchs will face Plainville next week.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Eric Haase hit two solo homers, Jeimer Candelario had a three-run shot and the Detroit Tigers beat the Kansas City Royals 10-2 on Friday night.

Haase opened the second inning by blasting Daniel Lynch’s second pitch 444 feet to the seats above the left-field fountains for his seventh consecutive hit.

“I’ve really tried to shorten up my swing, try to still stay powerful, but in a little shorter window,” Haase said.

One out later, Candelario hammered his team-leading 13th homer of the season 445 feet deep to left for a 4-0 lead.

“It was a great swing,” Candelario said. “Short and quick to the ball. When you hit the ball on the barrel, good things happen.”

Haase added another shot to left-center in the sixth, his 12th homer of the year and fifth career multi-homer game. He added a two-out RBI double in the eighth.

“Obviously, he’s living right, with the bloop hit and the two homers,” Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said. “We’ve seen him get hot like this before and there’s a lot of damage that comes with it.”

Kansas City-area product Joey Wentz (1-1), who was recalled from Toledo on Thursday, allowed only a pair of two-out hits in 6 2/3 shutout innings for his first major league victory. Wentz struck out five with one walk.

“He looked extremely confident today and that’s how he was throwing the baseball,” Haase said. “He was filling up the zone with all his pitches. He kind of just had his way. He was able to do different things with the ball and get big outs.”

“Definitely cool.” Wentz said. “First major league win, obviously special anywhere, but probably a little more special to have a lot of my family, a lot of my friends here to watch. My win comes on a very good night for the whole team, which was also very good.”

Wentz estimated 40 to 50 of his family and friends were in the crowd behind the Tigers dugout.

“I thought the ovation he got coming off the field was so awesome,” Hinch said. “I told him it’s pretty awesome to come out and pitch in front of your family and friends. Enjoy this walk because it doesn’t happen very often, especially on the road.”

“It was really cool,” Wentz said. “When A.J. came out he said you’re going to walk off in front of all your family and friends, which was special for me.”

Candelario, Haase and Spencer Torkelson each had three hits as Detroit out-hit Kansas City 17-6. The Tigers had multiple baserunners in every inning except the first and seventh.

Lynch (4-10) allowed six runs on 10 hits, recording 11 outs. He has won just one of his last 11 starts.

Tigers IF Jonathan Schoop was reinstated from the IL. Royals 1B Vinnie Pasquantino was reinstated from the IL.
