McCrae captured the individual title at the 24th Annual NSU Golf Classic, tied for fifth at the Broncho Invitational and was the runner-up at the 2023 MIAA Championship. 🥎 FHSU has eight on MIAA Academic Honor Roll

Kevin McCullar Jr. said Wednesday that he will return to Kansas for his final year of eligibility, likely rounding out a roster that could make the Jayhawks the preseason No. 1 next season.

McCullar transferred from Texas Tech to Kansas for last season, when he started 33 of 34 games and averaged 10.7 points and 7.0 rebounds. He was also among the nation's leaders in steals, and along with being selected to the Big 12's all-defensive team, the 6-foot-6 forward was a semifinalist for the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year award.

“To be able to play in front of the best fans in the country; to play for the best coach in the nation, I truly believe we have the pieces to hang another banner in the Phog," McCullar said in announcing his return.

Along with McCullar, the Jayhawks return starters Dajuan Harris Jr. and K.J. Adams from a team that went 28–8, won the Big 12 regular-season title and was a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament, where it lost to Arkansas in the second round.

Perhaps more importantly, the Jayhawks landed Michigan transfer Hunter Dickinson, widely considered the best player in the portal, to anchor a lineup that was missing a true big man. They also grabbed former five-star prospect Arterio Morris, who left Texas, and Towson's Nick Timberlake, who emerged last season as one of the best 3-point shooters in the country.

The Jayhawks also have an elite recruiting class arriving that is headlined by five-star recruit Elmarko Jackson.

McCullar declared for the draft but, after getting feedback from scouts, decided to return. He was a redshirt senior last season, but he has another year of eligibility because part of his career was played during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“This is a big day for Kansas basketball,” Jayhawks coach Bill Self said. “Kevin is not only a terrific player but a terrific teammate. He fit in so well in year one and we’re excited about what he’ll do with our program from a leadership standpoint.”

👟 FHSU places 40 on Outdoor MIAA Academic Honor Roll

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Maikel Garcia had three hits, an RBI and a run and the Kansas City Royals beat the Detroit Tigers 4-1 on Tuesday night to snap a four-game losing streak.

Mike Mayers allowed one run on six hits in 4 2/3 innings in his first start for the Royals. He struck out a career-high eight and walked one.

“I would have liked a couple more outs,” Mayers said. "We won — that's all that matters. The bullpen pitched really well. The adrenaline in the big leagues is a little more taxing than the adrenaline in Triple-A.”

His manager was impressed with his outing.

“He threw so many strikes and was efficient,” Matt Quatraro said. “Several times he had a three-pitch strikeout. He had a good cutter. He located his fastball and he threw several good breaking balls. He mixed it to the point where they weren't exactly sure what he was going to throw and he located it.”

Jose Cuas (3-0) was the winner, and Aroldis Chapman pitched a scoreless ninth for his second save.

Eduardo Rodriguez (4-4) took the loss. He allowed four runs — two earned — on eight hits in five innings. He struck out nine and walked two.

“I made, probably, two mistakes and I paid for it,” Rodriguez said. "But the rest I just tip my hat to them because they made good swings on it.”

The Tigers threatened in the fourth, loading the bases with two outs on two infield singles and a walk, but Mayers induced a groundball from Miguel Cabrera.

The Royals got to Rodriguez in the fourth. Edward Olivares reached on shortstop Javier Baez's error and scored on a double by Michael Massey. Massey then came in on a single by Garcia. Garcia scored the third run of the inning on a sacrifice fly by Salvador Perez. Only one of the runs was earned.

“We had good at-bats off Rodriguez in the fourth,” Quatraro said. “To string a few hits together and put up some runs was nice. I really do believe we have a deep lineup. It's just a matter of consistently doing it night in and night out.”

Mayers labored in the fifth and left with the bases loaded and two outs. One of those runners scored on a single by Baez. Olivares singled with one out in the bottom of the fifth, scoring Bobby Witt Jr. with Kansas City's fourth run. Witt reached on the first bunt base hit of his career.

Royals RHP Nick Wittgren was selected from Triple-A Omaha. Wittgren, who pitched for Royals' pitching coach Brian Sweeney with Cleveland from 2019-21, had a 1.25 ERA with five saves in 17 appearances with Omaha. In a corresponding move, RHP Max Castillo was optioned to Triple-A Omaha.

The Tigers and Royals will complete the three-game series Wenesday. Detroit LHP Matthew Boyd (3-3, 6.21 ERA) will face RHP Zack Greinke (1-5, 4.82 ERA).

Buckles shot a career-low 72 in the opening round of the 5A state golf tournament at the Turkey Creek Golf Course in McPherson Monday. He followed that up with an 85 on Tuesday and tied for 42nd
place with a 157. 

Fellow senior Landen Clark
backed up his career-low of 79 on Monday with his second lowest career round of 82 and
tied for 69th place with a 161.

Bishop Carroll senior Noah Holtzman shot a 61 Tuesday and won and finished 13-under and won the 5A title by seven shots. The 61 is the lowest round ever recorded for any class
at a state tournament.

Bishop Carroll won the team title by 10 shots over rival Kapaun Mt. Carmel. Goddard-Eisenhower finished third, 15 shots back of the Golden Eagles.

⛳ HHS' Buckles, Clark close out state tourney

HESSTON -&nbsp;The TMP-Marian boys golf teams lowered their first round score by 16 shots Tuesday at the 2A state tournament at the Hesston Golf Course but the Monarchs didn't move up the leaderboard. They finished in sixth place, the same spot they were in after Monday's opening round of 358. The Monarchs shot a 342 in their final round. 

Hill City shot a 326 Tuesday, 11 strokes higher than Monday and finished second place, 44 behind Sacred Heart who won their seventh straight state title after a 2-day total of 597. 

Hill City senior Cooper Bagley shot a 76 in the final round and finished in fourth place with a two-day total of 153, 14 shots behind Sacred Heart's Michael Matteucci who won the individual title. The Ringnecks Noah Fry finished ninth with a&nbsp; 159. 

TMP-Marian's Pake Dewey shots a 75 in his final round and finished in 11th at 18-over-par. Fellow Monarch Landon Rozean closed with an 82 and tied for 23rd at 167.

Austin Carroll of Ellis fired a 78 Tuesday and tied for 12th at 19-over.

⛳ Hill City finishes second, TMP-Marian sixth at 2A state

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Fort Hays State's&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-golf/roster/morgan-brasser/6948">Morgan Brasser</a>&nbsp;(women's golf) and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-track-and-field/roster/ryan-stanley/7194">Ryan Stanley</a>&nbsp;(men's track &amp; field) were both selected as finalists for the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association's Ken B. Jones Award, presented by Summit Pointe Financial Group, announced Tuesday by the league office. The annual award recognizes the conference's male and female student-athletes of the year. Brasser, Stanley and the eight other finalists will be recognized at the 2023 MIAA Awards Celebration, presented by Husch Blackwell, on Tuesday, June 6 in the Music Hall at the Kansas City Convention Center. The 2022-23 female and male Ken B. Jones winners will be announced during the event as well. Fort Hays State and Pittsburg State are the only two schools with finalists on both the men's and women's side. Emporia State, Missouri Western, Central Missouri, Central Oklahoma, Northeastern State and Nebraska-Kearney all have one finalist each. Stanley is a finalist for the award for a second time after previously winning the 2020-21 spring MIAA Men's Student-Athlete of the Year award. The fifth-year senior qualified for his eighth NCAA Division II National Championship during the current outdoor track and field season, where he will vie for a third national title later this week in Pueblo, Colo. He earned his seventh All-American honor after placing seventh at the indoor national meet earlier this year. He previously won the national title during the 2021 outdoor season and the 2022 indoor campaign. Stanley won his second MIAA championship during this outdoor season, earning his fifth All-MIAA medal in the process. He was also an All-MIAA pick during the 2023 indoor season, placing third indoors. He has seven USTFCCCA All-Central Region honors in his career. The Bennington, Kan. native set the outdoor school record with a clearance of 17-7 (5.36m) earlier this season in California. He also holds the indoor school record with his national-championship-clinching mark of 17-9.25 (5.42m) in 2022. Stanley completed an undergraduate degree as a double major in Management (Human Resources) and Spanish with a GPA of 3.95 while maintaining a GPA of 3.63 in graduate school studying for an MBA emphasizing in Human Resources. He was a CoSIDA Academic All-America first team selection in 2021 and is a two-time CoSIDA/College Sports Communicators Academic All-District pick. He has earned four USTFCCCA All-Academic Awards, three MIAA Academic Excellence Awards, five MIAA Scholar-Athlete Awards, nine MIAA Academic Honor Roll spots and three D2ADA Academic Achievement Awards. He serves as the FHSU student body president after spending last year as vice president and has also been a VIP Ambassador with the Office of the President for three consecutive years. He's helped with SGA's Big Event three years in a row by serving at Bethesda Place and has also traveled to Topeka to advocate for higher education three times at Higher Education Day. He's been a guest speaker at the Hays Middle School Leadership Conference and volunteered at Youth Night at the Track. Stanley packed boxes for Operation Christmas Child with Christian Challenge and participated in Kare Packs packing with the Society for Human Resource Management. He frequently drives international classmates with limited means of transportation to run errands. Brasser was a steady force on the course all season long, completing the year with a program-record stroke average of 75.8. She won three tournaments and finished inside the top 10 at eight out of 12 events, including six in the top five. The Andale, Kan. native was the MIAA Women's Golfer of the Year and was a unanimous first team All-MIAA selection, her third all-conference honor after receiving honorable mention status each of the last two seasons. She earned a spot in the NCAA Central Regional as an individual for a third-consecutive season in 2023 and was also named to the WGCA All-Central Region team. The junior was named MIAA Women's Golfer of the Week three times this season. Brasser recorded nine rounds at-or-under par, including six under-par trips around the course. She turned in a score of 2-over or better in more than half of her rounds on the year (15 of 28). Brasser tied the program record with a single-round score of 69 twice and set the program record for lowest tournament score in relation to par at 4-under at the Newman Invitational. She earned College Sports Communicators Academic All-District honors this year and was a WGCA All-America Scholar in 2021-22. She has earned a trio of MIAA Scholar-Athlete Awards, three spots on the MIAA Academic Honor Roll and three listings on the Deans Honor Roll at FHSU. She also received the D2ADA Academic Achievement Award last year. Brasser has served on the FHSU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee for three years and represented FHSU at the MIAA SAAC meeting in Kansas City earlier this year. She also serves at the FHSU Campus Catholic Center. On the course, Brasser serves as a junior golf clinic instructor for children ages 5-18 and designed the first-ever FHSU golf clinic for girls in junior high. She plans to spend the summer teaching junior golf and ladies clinics in the Wichita area. Fort Hays State has now had 17 Ken B. Jones Award finalists since joining the MIAA in 2006-07. Three Tigers have earned the conference's top honor, including Stanley (2020-21 spring), Whitney Randall (2020-21 winter) and Kate Lehman (2014-15). FHSU has had at least one finalist for each of the last 11 awards (since 2014-15). Each institution may nominate one female and one male student-athlete. The nominees must have completed at least their junior season of athletics eligibility by June 1 of the academic year of nomination. A nominee must have at least a 3.25 cumulative grade-point average through the previous full semester term through February 1 of the academic year of nomination at the certifying member institution. A 13-member panel of athletics directors, senior woman administrators, faculty athletics representatives and sports information directors - including a representative from each member institution - select the finalists.  </figure>FHSU AthleticsKANSAS CITY, Mo. - Fort Hays State's&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-golf/roster/morgan-brasser/6948">Morgan Brasser</a>&nbsp;(women's golf) and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-track-and-field/roster/ryan-stanley/7194">Ryan Stanley</a>&nbsp;(men's track &amp; field) were both selected as finalists for the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association's Ken B. Jones Award, presented by Summit Pointe Financial Group, announced Tuesday by the league office. The annual award recognizes the conference's male and female student-athletes of the year. Brasser, Stanley and the eight other finalists will be recognized at the 2023 MIAA Awards Celebration, presented by Husch Blackwell, on Tuesday, June 6 in the Music Hall at the Kansas City Convention Center. The 2022-23 female and male Ken B. Jones winners will be announced during the event as well. Fort Hays State and Pittsburg State are the only two schools with finalists on both the men's and women's side. Emporia State, Missouri Western, Central Missouri, Central Oklahoma, Northeastern State and Nebraska-Kearney all have one finalist each. Stanley is a finalist for the award for a second time after previously winning the 2020-21 spring MIAA Men's Student-Athlete of the Year award. The fifth-year senior qualified for his eighth NCAA Division II National Championship during the current outdoor track and field season, where he will vie for a third national title later this week in Pueblo, Colo. He earned his seventh All-American honor after placing seventh at the indoor national meet earlier this year. He previously won the national title during the 2021 outdoor season and the 2022 indoor campaign. Stanley won his second MIAA championship during this outdoor season, earning his fifth All-MIAA medal in the process. He was also an All-MIAA pick during the 2023 indoor season, placing third indoors. He has seven USTFCCCA All-Central Region honors in his career. The Bennington, Kan. native set the outdoor school record with a clearance of 17-7 (5.36m) earlier this season in California. He also holds the indoor school record with his national-championship-clinching mark of 17-9.25 (5.42m) in 2022. Stanley completed an undergraduate degree as a double major in Management (Human Resources) and Spanish with a GPA of 3.95 while maintaining a GPA of 3.63 in graduate school studying for an MBA emphasizing in Human Resources. He was a CoSIDA Academic All-America first team selection in 2021 and is a two-time CoSIDA/College Sports Communicators Academic All-District pick. He has earned four USTFCCCA All-Academic Awards, three MIAA Academic Excellence Awards, five MIAA Scholar-Athlete Awards, nine MIAA Academic Honor Roll spots and three D2ADA Academic Achievement Awards. He serves as the FHSU student body president after spending last year as vice president and has also been a VIP Ambassador with the Office of the President for three consecutive years. He's helped with SGA's Big Event three years in a row by serving at Bethesda Place and has also traveled to Topeka to advocate for higher education three times at Higher Education Day. He's been a guest speaker at the Hays Middle School Leadership Conference and volunteered at Youth Night at the Track. Stanley packed boxes for Operation Christmas Child with Christian Challenge and participated in Kare Packs packing with the Society for Human Resource Management. He frequently drives international classmates with limited means of transportation to run errands. Brasser was a steady force on the course all season long, completing the year with a program-record stroke average of 75.8. She won three tournaments and finished inside the top 10 at eight out of 12 events, including six in the top five. The Andale, Kan. native was the MIAA Women's Golfer of the Year and was a unanimous first team All-MIAA selection, her third all-conference honor after receiving honorable mention status each of the last two seasons. She earned a spot in the NCAA Central Regional as an individual for a third-consecutive season in 2023 and was also named to the WGCA All-Central Region team. The junior was named MIAA Women's Golfer of the Week three times this season. Brasser recorded nine rounds at-or-under par, including six under-par trips around the course. She turned in a score of 2-over or better in more than half of her rounds on the year (15 of 28). Brasser tied the program record with a single-round score of 69 twice and set the program record for lowest tournament score in relation to par at 4-under at the Newman Invitational. She earned College Sports Communicators Academic All-District honors this year and was a WGCA All-America Scholar in 2021-22. She has earned a trio of MIAA Scholar-Athlete Awards, three spots on the MIAA Academic Honor Roll and three listings on the Deans Honor Roll at FHSU. She also received the D2ADA Academic Achievement Award last year. Brasser has served on the FHSU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee for three years and represented FHSU at the MIAA SAAC meeting in Kansas City earlier this year. She also serves at the FHSU Campus Catholic Center. On the course, Brasser serves as a junior golf clinic instructor for children ages 5-18 and designed the first-ever FHSU golf clinic for girls in junior high. She plans to spend the summer teaching junior golf and ladies clinics in the Wichita area. Fort Hays State has now had 17 Ken B. Jones Award finalists since joining the MIAA in 2006-07. Three Tigers have earned the conference's top honor, including Stanley (2020-21 spring), Whitney Randall (2020-21 winter) and Kate Lehman (2014-15). FHSU has had at least one finalist for each of the last 11 awards (since 2014-15). Each institution may nominate one female and one male student-athlete. She turned in six rounds at under-par, another school record, including tying the record-low round at 69. She earned her third MIAA Scholar-Athlete Award this season. Henry finished the season a team-high 38 wins, turning in a record of 38-4, while also leading the team with nine major decisions and seven technical falls. A redshirt-sophomore that just completed his fourth year of competition, he earned his second MIAA Scholar-Athlete Award this season after going 4-0 in conference duals. Five Tigers earn CSC at-large Academic All-District honors

Former Hays High baseball standout Brock Lummus has committed to continue his baseball career at Division I Western Illinois.

Lummus made the announcement Tuesday on Twitter.

Lummus has spent the last three seasons at Butler Community College in El Dorado. After redshirting his freshman season in 2021, he played in 10 games as a redshirt-freshman in 2022 (.261/.471/.652) with 3 home runs and 9 RBI. 

This past spring Lummus played in 50 games (.355/.463/.580) with 8 home runs and 44 RBI and was named Honorable Mention All-KJCCC.

Lummus is a 2020 graduate of Hays High where he was an all-state selection as a junior. His senior season was cancelled due to COVID-19. 

Lummus is the son of Lane &amp; Danielle Lummus.

⚾ Former HHS standout Lummus commits to Western Illinois

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Javier Báez hit a bases-clearing double in the 10th inning for his third hit of the night to lift the Detroit Tigers to an 8-5 victory over the Kansas City Royals in the opener of a three-game series Monday night.

“It's the best feeling in the world,” Báez said in an on-field interview after the game. “I'm just happy that I got good contact.”

Báez had three hits in the game, but the first two combined for an exit velocity of about 112 mph and didn't leave the infield. His third hit was a line drive over the left-fielder's head.

“He probably got the softest hits tonight and he probably got the hardest hit tonight,” Detroit manager AJ Hinch said. “I'll take them both.”

Matt Vierling had three hits, including a home run, and four RBIs for the Tigers.

Alex Lange (2-0) earned the victory with two hitless innings of relief. Jose Cisnero picked up his first save.

“I think (Lange) was excellent tonight,” Hinch said. “We talk to him over and over about the back end of the game. He can't just wait on the last three outs and a clean inning all the time. These were clean innings, but he's going to need to be ready in the eighth. Tonight we needed him to pitch in a different part of the game.”

Scott Barlow (1-3) allowed Báez's winning hit and took the loss.

“(The bullpen) kept us in the game," Kansas City manager Matt Quatraro said. "They didn’t give up a run until the 10th inning. So, we couldn’t have asked for anything more.”

Neither starter was effective. Detroit's Michael Lorenzen gave up five runs and five hits in 5 2/3 innings. Brady Singer allowed five runs and seven hits and four walks in 3 2/3 innings. Singer came into the game with a 6-0 record with a 2.44 ERA in 10 career starts against the Tigers.

Detroit batters walked 10 times, the first time the Tigers had eight or more walks in consecutive games since June 13-14, 2016.

The Tigers got three runs in the first inning without much solid contact. Zach McKinstry led off with a single in the hole at second. With one out, Báez singled over first base and Spencer Torkelson walked. Singer then walked Akil Baddoo on four pitches to send home the first run. Vierling lined a single through the hole at short for two more runs.

The Royals wasted no time in getting back into the game. Vinnie Pasquantino launched a 424-foot, two-run home run and Salvador Perez followed with a 419-foot shot to tie the score before Lorenzen recorded the first out. It was the first time this year the Royals hit back-to-back home runs.

Vierling then put the Tigers back in front with a two-run home run in the third, giving him four RBIs on the night.

“I feel good (and) relaxed,” Vierling said. “Hitting is up and down sometimes. I feel like I'm seeing it well. I really like my approach right now. I'm just trying to stay with that as much as possible.”

Jackie Bradley Jr. hit his first homer as a Royal to tie the game in the fifth. Nicky Lopez tripled leading off the inning before Bradley hit it into the Tigers bullpen in left. Bradley snapped an 0-for-26 skid.

Royals IF Nicky Lopez returned from rehab assignment at Triple-A Omaha and was reinstated from IL. He has been out since May 2 with an emergency appendectomy. In a corresponding move, IF/OF Hunter Dozier was designated for assignment. Dozier was hitting .183 with two home runs and nine RBIs in 29 games this season.

The Tigers and Royals will play the second game of a three-game series. The Tigers will send LHP Eduardo Rodriguez (4-3, 2.06 ERA) to the mound. The Royals have not announced a starter.

McPHERSON - The Hays High boys golf team shot their lowest round of the spring but it wasn't good enough to get them into the second day of the 5A State Golf Tournament at the Tukey Creek Golf Course. The Indians shot a 319, 14 shots lower than their best round this season, but needed a 307 to get into the top six. 

After the completion of the first 18 holes, the top six team scores and the individuals, not on one of the six teams, that bring the day two field to a total of 54 will qualify for day two.

Hays High did have two individuals make the cut to Tuesday's second round. Senior Blake Buckles shot a career-low 72  and is tied for 11th. Fellow senior Landen Clark fired a 79 and was tied for 46th. 

&nbsp;Bishop Carroll shot a 280 and had a 2-stroke lead over Kapuan Mt. Carmel after day one. Golden Eagle freshman Maximus Farber was the clubhouse leader after day one with a 5-under-par 65.

🏐 KVA announces All-Star squads

CHICAGO (AP) — Luis Robert Jr. homered, Lance Lynn pitched six effective innings and the Chicago White Sox beat the Kansas City Royals 5-2 on Sunday for a three-game series sweep.

Romy González went 3 for 3, including two-run triple that put the White Sox ahead for good as the Chicago won for the fifth time in six games. The White Sox also improved to 12-8 since an ugly 10-game slide.

Lynn (3-5) allowed two runs and four hits in his second straight win. The right-hander struck out six and walked two.

Lynn tossed the sixth straight quality start for the South Siders, whose rotation seems to be coalescing.

“The starters as a whole are doing what we're capable of,” Lynn said. “If we do what we're supposed to, it puts the bullpen in a good spot and you've seen them really take off too.”

Lynn kept dealing after giving up Michael Massey's deep two-run homer in the second that put the Royals ahead 2-0. Massey has three homers this year — all against Chicago.

“He just settled in and does what he does," manager Pedro Grifol said. “He just keeps us in games and knows who to navigate through that lineup three times.”

Kansas City finished with just four hits as three Chicago relievers closed it out, with Joe Kelly pitching a perfect ninth for his first save. The last-place Royals have dropped seven of nine.

Royals right-hander Carlos Hernández pitched the first two innings, retiring his six batters and striking out the first three. Max Castillo (0-1) then allowed five runs and eight hits in 4 2/3 innings.

“(Hernández) was throwing the ball really well, challenged hitters and has really good stuff,” said Kansas City manager Matt Quatraro said, who has no plans to stretch out Hernández beyond being an opener or reliever.

Robert hit a solo drive in the fourth for his 13th homer, and Chicago went ahead to stay with three runs in the fifth.

With one out and runners on second and third, González tripled to the base of the wall in right.

“It was definitely a good day and a huge gift,” Gonzáles said. ”It was just looking for something to drive. I had a good pitch and put a good swing on it."

Andrew Benintendi then made it 4-2 with a sacrifice fly on a foul ball to left.

Benintendi added an RBI single in the seventh, driving in Tim Anderson and helping Chicago close out its first winning homestand at 6-3.

González started at shortstop in place of Anderson, appearing in only his second game in May. Anderson entered batting .211 with no homers and two RBIs over 17 games this month.

Grifol said it was a maintenance day for Anderson. The two-time All-Star entered in the sixth after González moved to second base when Hanser Alberto departed with left shoulder soreness.

The White Sox promoted&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/white-sox-frazier-mlb-7d8d0a52507eb609d81a5cdee6dc3df5">Clint Frazier</a>&nbsp;from Triple-A Charlotte and cut fellow outfielder Jake Marisnick. Frazier went 1 for 3 and scored a run in his first big league game in almost a year.

The 24-year-old Massey, from the southwest Chicago suburb of Palos Park, Illinois, was a White Sox fan growing up. The Royals drafted him from the University of Illinois in 2019.

Massey also said he got engaged during the weekend homecoming

TOPEKA - Hays High sophomore Izabel Schmidt placed fourth in both the 50 and 100 Yard Freestyle at the 5-1A State Swimming and Diving Championships over the weekend in Topeka. The top four finish also places her on the All-State swim team.

In the 50 Yard Freestyle, Schmidt had a preliminary time of 24.51 then finished with a time of 24.35 in the
finals race. Hillsboro’s Lauryn Voght won the race with a time of 23.92.

Schmidt qualified for the
finals in the 100 Yard Freestyle with a time of 53.47. She than swam 53.21 in the
finals race. Presley Baber of Blue Valley Southwest won with a time of 52.31.

CHICAGO (AP) — Jake Burger hit a three-run double in the sixth inning, helping Lucas Giolito and the Chicago White Sox beat the Kansas City Royals 5-1 on Saturday.

Yoán Moncada had two RBIs as Chicago won for the fourth time in five games. Andrew Benintendi and Luis Robert Jr. each scored two runs.

Burger has hit safely in six games since returning from a strained left oblique, going 11 for 22 with three homers and nine RBIs. He came through again in this one, breaking open a tight game.

“For me, it's just controlling everything and slowing the game down,” Burger said. “I feel like I did that in the last at-bat real well."

With Chicago ahead 2-1, its first three batters reached in the sixth before Royals starter Jordan Lyles was replaced by Jose Cuas. Benintendi walked and Robert reached on catcher interference before Moncada walked.

After Andrew Vaughn struck out swinging, Burger hit a liner into the gap in right-center. Burger’s clutch swing gave the White Sox a 5-1 lead.

“It's a one-run game and you've got to have some extra focus, especially in that situation,” Burger said. “Fortunately I got the right pitch and drove the ball to right-center.”

Giolito (3-3) permitted one run and six hits in six innings. The right-hander has a 2.66 ERA his last eight starts.

“For me it's all about taking it one pitch at a time, executing and working well with Seby (catcher Zavala) on sequencing,” Giolito said.

Salvador Pérez hit his 10th homer in Kansas City's sixth loss in eight games. Pérez finished with three hits, including a double, off Giolito.

“With Salvy, he's owned me over the course of my career,” Gioloto said,. “Some days it's like I strike him out out two or three times in three at-bats. Other days it's like homer, double, double. Today was one of those days.”

Pérez was a lone bright spot for the last-place Royals.

“He's a good ballplayer man," Kansas City manager Matt Quatraro said. “It's no accident he's been doing this for 12-13 years.”

Royals right-hander Jordan Lyles (0-8) was charged with five runs, four earned, and four hits in five-plus innings.

Pérez drove a 3-2 slider just over the fence in left-center in the first for Kansas City

But the White Sox responded with two runs in the bottom half.

After Benintendi singled and Robert doubled, Moncada hit a two-run single to left.

White Sox closer Liam Hendriks, who is recovering from stage-4 non-Hodgkin lymphoma, is expected to throw another live batting practice session, possibly when the team is in Cleveland for a three-game series that starts Monday.

Manager Pedro Grifol said the team and Hendriks will evaluate his status afterward and “we’ll see where we go from there.”

The 34-year-old right-hander tossed live BP in Chicago on Friday and was back in the clubhouse on Saturday.

Kansas City reinstated left-hander Amir Garrett from the family medical emergency list and optioned right-hander Jackson Kowar to Triple-A Omaha. Kowar made his season debut in Friday’s 2-0 loss at Chicago, pitching 2 1/3 scoreless innings.

White Sox: OF Gavin Sheets was scratched. He jammed a wrist sliding into second on Friday. ... C Yasmani Grandal (right hamstring) was available off the bench. He is expected to start Sunday. ... CHICAGO (AP) — Michael Kopech almost nailed the batter with the game’s first pitch. After that, he was just about perfect.

Kopech gave up one hit over a career-high eight innings, and the Chicago White Sox beat the Kansas City Royals 2-0 on Friday night.

Kopech simply toyed with the Royals as the White Sox opened a weekend series between teams with two of the majors’ worst records on a winning note. The hard-throwing right-hander struck out a season-high 10 on 98 pitches, and bounced back from a loss to Houston and won for the second time in three starts.

Kopech (2-4) nearly hit Bobby Witt Jr. in the head with the game’s first pitch, but got him to ground out on a 3-1 fastball. He retired the the first 16 batters before giving up a bloop single to Michael Massey, who was erased on a double play. Massey also broke up a no-hit bid by the Padres’ Michael Wacha on Monday at San Diego when he lined a single leading off the eighth.

“I knew that it was in the works,” Kopech said. “I wasn’t really focused on it. And fortunately, (after) that happened, I was able to go right back to work because I wasn’t focused on it. I missed my location, he got a hit. That’s part of the game.”

The Royals did not get another runner. Kopech lobbied to go the distance after breezing through the eighth.

Manager Pedro Grifol said he would have kept him in if the no-hitter was intact. Instead, Kendall Graveman worked the ninth for his third save, getting Jackie Bradley Jr. on a fly to deep center to end the game.

“Almost just grabbed my glove and ran out there and waved off Graveman,” Kopech said. “I understand. I had a lot of rest coming up to this one but we are back on five days now and working over 100 pitches is hard to bounce back from.”

The White Sox took a 2-0 lead against Zach Greinke (1-5) in the second.

Yoán Moncada led off with a single and scored on Gavin Sheets’ base hit. Romy González drove in Andrew Vaughn with a sacrifice fly to deep center field.

Kopech made it stand, and the White Sox came away with the win after the Royals pummeled them 27-13 in taking three of four at Kansas City last week.

“With the stuff he has, he can do that any night,” catcher Seby Zavala said.

Greinke settled down after the second, allowing two runs and five hits in 5 2/3 innings. The former AL Cy Young Award winner exited with a runner on second.

Jackson Kowar walked Vaughn and Sheets to load the bases before retiring Jake Burger on a grounder to the shortstop.

Royals: Struggling RHP Brad Keller (right shoulder impingement) was placed on the 15-day injured list and is scheduled for an MRI in Kansas City on Monday. “He’s feeling better, but wasn’t going to be able to rebound to be able to make a start,” manager Matt Quatraro said. Keller leads the majors with 40 walks in nine starts, including eight in 32/3 innings against San Diego on Monday. The Royals recalled RHP Max Castillo from Triple-A Omaha.

⚾ Kopech gives up 1 hit over 8 innings, White Sox beat Royals

JOHNSON CITY, Kan. – The Plainville boys and Ellis girls won
the team titles at the Stanton County 2A Track and Field Regional Friday. The Cardinal
boys scored 88 points, 22 more than Hoxie and Meade who tied for second. The Railer girls scored 73 1/2 points, 8 1/2 better than second place TMP-Marian.

The Ellis girls qualified seven individuals and two relays. Natalee North won the discus (120-0) and placed second in the shot put (37-4). Isabella Eick was second in the high jump (5-2). Mackenna Kohl was second in the 800 meters (2:30.71), one, one-hundredth of a second ahead of teammate Avery Boydston who placed third (2:30.72). Boydston was also third in the 1600 meters (5:28.91). Emily Eck placed fourth in the 400 meters (1:01.04). Madi Russell finished fourth in the 3200 meters (12:24.22). Addison Kohl was third in the 100 hurdles (17.17). Kylee Pfeifer placed third in the 300 hurdles (49.58). The 4x800 relay team finished first (10:23.98). 

The Railer boys qualified two. Mason Younger won the pole vault (12-0) and Rex Johnson finished first in the javelin (168-0).

The Monarch girls had five qualified for next week’s state meet
in nine events as well as the 4x100 meter relay which placed second (52.34). Emma
Basgall finished second in the 100 meters (13.19) and placed fourth in the pole
vault (8-0). Shalee Gottschalk won the 100 hurdles (16.00) was second in the
triple jump (34-11) and placed fourth in the 300 hurdles (50.81). Shyanne Yost
finished third in the high jump (5-0). 
Ashley Seib was fourth in the high jump (4-10). Anna Cappuccio finished third
in the pole vault (9-0).

Carson Liles was the only Monarch boy to qualify for state
after finishing third in the pole vault (11-0).

The Plainville girls had two first place finishes. Gracie Kerns
won the triple jump (36-1.75) and they won the 4x100 relay. Jada Rathburn
placed third in the 200 (27.58) and was fourth in the 100 (13.31). Zoe Brown
was second in the 200 (27.57). 

The Cardinal boys also won two events. Braylon Bittel the
discus (161-11) and A.J Brown the 110 hurdles (16.26). Brown finished second in
the 300 hurdles (42.95) and Bittel was third in the shot put (46-3.5). Carter
Cellmer placed second in the 200 (23.48), the long jump (21-0.5) and triple
jump (42-10.5).

Trego boys and girls both qualified three. Tegan Lang was second
in the girls 100 hurdles (17.14). Myah Mattheyer third in the triple jump (109-8)
and Annabelle Malsam third in the discus (109-8) and fourth in the javelin
(114-6). Gunner Wilson qualified in three events, He won the triple jump (43-7)
and the 400 (50.67) and placed third in the 200 (23.54). Jeremiah Tkatch
finished second in the high jump (5-10). 
Owen Day placed fourth in the javelin (157-2).

Hill City qualified two. Ryenn Cooper finished second in the
girls javelin (115-4) and Kaleb Atkins placed third in the boys long jump
(20-7.25).

was second in the 200 (27.57). The Cardinal boys also won two events. Braylon Bittel the
discus (161-11) and A.J Brown the 110 hurdles (16.26). Brown finished second in
the 300 hurdles (42.95) and Bittel was third in the shot put (46-3.5). Carter
Cellmer placed second in the 200 (23.48), the long jump (21-0.5) and triple
jump (42-10.5).Trego boys and girls both qualified three. Tegan Lang was second
in the girls 100 hurdles (17.14). Myah Mattheyer third in the triple jump (109-8)
and Annabelle Malsam third in the discus (109-8) and fourth in the javelin
(114-6). Gunner Wilson qualified in three events, He won the triple jump (43-7)
and the 400 (50.67) and placed third in the 200 (23.54). Jeremiah Tkatch
finished second in the high jump (5-10). 
Owen Day placed fourth in the javelin (157-2).Hill City qualified two. Ryenn Cooper finished second in the

track meet Friday. The Bulldogs scored 114 points, 39 better than second place
Ingalls. Bradley Bogert won three individual events, the 200 meters (22.74), 400
meters (49.64) and 110 hurdles (15.33). Trace Kinderknecht won the 100 meters
(11.08) and was third in 400 meters (53.32). Quinter also won the 4x400 meter
relay and placed third in the 4x100. Hans Deaton placed third in the 3200
meters (10:50.10) and was fourth in the 1600 meters (4:52.42). Lakin Getz won the
javelin (169-0) and finished third in the discus (144-4). Dashiell Brown placed
third in the shot put (49-9.25).

She won the pole vault (11-1), placed second in both the 100 (16.21) and 300 (49.39)
hurdles and was fourth in the high jump (5-0). Brooklyn Countryman finished third
in the 3200 meters (13:12.72). The Bulldogs 4x800 relay team placed fourth (10:34.12).

Landon Schmidtberger both made it in two events. Hammerschmidt won the long
