41-34 victory at No. 6 Oklahoma on Saturday night, quarterback Adrian
Martinez has been named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week and safety Kobe
Savage has been named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week, the conference
office announced Monday.

It is the first Big 12 weekly honor for both players.
Martinez is K-State’s first offensive player of the week since Skylar Thompson
earned the nod following the 2020 Oklahoma game, and Savage’s honor marked the
third-straight season a Wildcat has been named the newcomer of the week. The
Wildcats now have three Big 12 weekly honors this season as Phillip Brooks
earned the nod on special teams following the Missouri game.

In addition to his Big 12 weekly honor, Martinez was also
named a Manning Award Star of the Week, and fans can vote for the Manning Award
Quarterback of the Week via its <a href="https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?vanity=allstatesugarbowl&amp;set=a.10166482098555459">Facebook
page</a>.

Martinez accounted for 382 yards of total offense and five
touchdowns, throwing for 234 yards and a touchdown on 21-of-34 aim with no
interceptions and rushing for 148 yards and four scores. He set a new career
high in rushing touchdowns, while it was the most by a Wildcat since Skylar
Thompson’s four against Oklahoma in 2019. Martinez led the Wildcats to 509
yards of offense, their most since the 2019 Bowling Green game (521 yards) and
the most in a Big 12 game since the 2014 Texas Tech game (535 yards).
Martinez’s 148 rushing yards were the second-most in his career behind the 157
yards he had at Rutgers in 2020 while playing for Nebraska.

A product of Fresno, California, Martinez teamed with
running back Deuce Vaughn (116 yards) to give K-State two 100-yard
rushers in the same game for the first time since the 2017 Cactus Bowl against
UCLA and for the first time in a Big 12 contest since the 2017 Oklahoma game.

Savage, a transfer from Tyler Junior College, led the

points-per-game average and 15 points less than the Sooners scored the previous
week at Nebraska.

The duo was part of a host of players that led
K-State to its 11th all-time victory against an Associated Press top-10 team,
while it was the fifth in a road game. The Wildcats have now defeated a team
ranked in the Associated Press Top 25 in four of the last six seasons,
including the third time under head coach Chris Klieman. The Wildcats
handed Oklahoma just its ninth home loss since 2012 with four of those coming

DENVER (AP) — Nine three-and-outs. No touchdown passes. Only 126 yards passing. It was one of the ugliest games of Russell Wilson's storied career.

“We're still learning each other as a whole new system,” Wilson said after the Broncos grinded out an 11-10 win over the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday night. “There's so much greatness in store, and I can't wait for it.

"But just watching our defense battle, battle, battle ... everyone believed in each other and that's what football is all about."

The Broncos are 2-1 atop the topsy-turvy AFC West after Melvin Gordon atoned for two fumbles with a late 1-yard touchdown run and safety Kareem Jackson recovered Jeff Wilson Jr.'s fumble with 1:05 left to preserve the hard-fought win.

Denver's defense, which has allowed just 36 points through three games, sacked Jimmy Garoppolo four times and forced three turnovers in sending the 49ers to 1-2.

“That’s a Super Bowl caliber football team on the other side,” said Russell Wilson, who improved to 17-4 against San Francisco and 9-2 against Kyle Shanahan.

The Broncos' only sustained drive was a 12-play, 80-yarder that included a 12-yard scramble by Wilson and a 19-yard dart to Courtland Sutton at the San Francisco 5.

“Really, in the fourth quarter I had to move my legs,” said Wilson, who didn't show much of his mobility in the first two weeks with his new team.

After Gordon scored with 4:10 remaining, Wilson's 2-point pass was batted down, leaving the Broncos clinging to a one-point lead.

Garoppolo, in his first start for the injured Trey Lance, who broke an ankle in Week 2, drove the 49ers to midfield but his pass to Deebo Samuel was tipped by Jackson and intercepted by linebacker Jonas Griffith at the Denver 42 just before the 2-minute warning.

The Broncos went three-and-out again and the Niners got the ball back at their 15 with 1:42 remaining after Ray-Ray McCloud recovered his own muffed punt.

Bradley Chubb sacked Garoppolo for a 12-yard loss to the San Francisco 3. Then, Jeff Wilson hauled in the pass and coughed up the football on a hit from P.J. Locke. Jackson scooped up the loose ball with 65 seconds left at the 49ers' 24.

The only other game in NFL history that finished 11-10 came on Nov. 16, 2008, when the Steelers edged the Chargers.

Before Gordon's score, Garoppolo's 3-yard strike to Brandon Aiyuk in the first quarter stood as the only touchdown on the night.

Garoppolo and the 49ers may never have been happier for a safety, because he stepped out of the back of the end zone while tossing a pass that Chubb picked off at the 3 for what the Broncos thought was a pick-6 that would have erased their 7-3 deficit.

But it was a safety, leaving the 49ers clinging to a 7-5 lead in the third quarter.

“Wish he wouldn't have stepped out on that one," Broncos coach Nathaniel Hackett said.

Garoppolo isn’t the only NFL quarterback to lose track of where he was on the field and step out of the back of the end zone. It infamously happened to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J0OkR986LL4">Dan Orlovsky</a>&nbsp;on Oct. 12, 2008, while playing for the Detroit Lions. Orlovsky was trying to get away from Minnesota defensive end Jared Allen when he stepped out of bounds numerous times before the play was stopped.

Immediately after Garoppolo’s blunder, Orlovsky posted on his Twitter account: “IVE NEVER BEEN HAPPIER ... FFFFREEEEEDDDOOOMMMM.”

“That was a tough situation that I put him in,” Shanahan said of his quarterback. “They had one unblocked guy coming. I wish we had time for the big play. Could have ditched it. But it was a tough situation.”

San Francisco star left tackle Trent Williams injured an ankle on the play and was done for the night, replaced by Jaylon Moore.

“Trent's a warrior. Hopefully he bounces back fast," Garoppolo said. "It's always tough when you lose a guy like that.”

San Francisco was all set to trade Garoppolo away this spring, but he needed shoulder surgery in March which dampened any potential interest early in the offseason.

By the time Garoppolo was healthy there were no starting jobs available so he opted to stay in San Francisco on a reduced salary following an awkward training camp where he threw on his own on a side field and didn’t attend any meetings while the rest of the Niners prepared for the season.

That disconnection showed up Sunday night as the Niners converted just one third down out of 10.

“We were terrible today. I've just got to get on the same page with those guys. We have to convert those," Garoppolo said.

“Oh yeah, my arm is feeling it right now,” Garoppolo said. “I didn't really go through training camp. I'm not trying to make excuses or anything, but I've just got to get in game shape and get rolling.”

Linebacker Josey Jewell made his 2022 debut after missing two games with a calf injury and he recovered a fumble by Garoppolo at the 50-yard line early in the third quarter. He also had one of Denver's four sacks and one of the Broncos' three takeaways.

“That was awesome to get back out there with the guys,” said Jewell, who led Denver with nine tackles, including two for a loss.

San Francisco LB Azeez Al-Shaair left in the second quarter with a knee injury and didn't return. Broncos OLB Baron Browning left in the second quarter with a knee injury, and DT D.J. Jones left in the third with a head injury.

The 49ers host the Rams on Monday night, Oct. 3, and the Broncos visit the Raiders on Sunday.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Luis Castillo, fresh off signing a rich contract with Seattle, got chased as the Kansas City Royals erupted for 11 runs in the sixth inning and a wild, 13-12 win Sunday that cost the Mariners a chance to move up in the AL wild-card standings.

Mitch Haniger singled twice during an eight-run fifth for the Mariners, and they led 11-2 going into the bottom of the sixth. But Castillo struggled, and Michael Massey homered and drove in four runs during the Royals' biggest inning since 2004.

The Mariners stayed in the third wild-card spot, a half-game behind Tampa Bay. Seattle remained four games ahead of Baltimore for that last AL playoff slot.

Castillo, an All-Star traded from Cincinnati to the Mariners in midseason, got a $108 million, five-year contract that begins next season. The deal was announced Saturday.

Holding a nine-run lead, Castillo struck out the first batter in the Royals sixth. After a walk and Massey's homer, Castillo was pulled after another walk.

The Royals wound up combining seven hits, including a two-run single by Massey, and five walks off four pitchers to take the lead. Matt Brash (3-5) faced four batters and failed to record an out.

Hunter Dozier finished with three hits and two RBIs for the Royals.

Jose Cuas (4-2) recorded four outs for the win. Scott Barlow earned his 24th save.

Royals starter Max Castillo, who was recalled from Triple-A Omaha prior to the game, left after a bases-loaded walk to Cal Raleigh put the Mariners ahead 3-2 in the fifth. He allowed six runs on six hits and four walks.

The Mariners finished their road schedule at 45-36, while the Royals completed their home schedule at 38-43.

Kansas City's announced attendance of 18,350 brought its season total to 1,277,776. That was 201,883 fewer than in 2019, the most recent season before COVID-19 restrictions.

Mariners OF Jesse Winker left Sunday’s game with a bruised left wrist after being hit by a pitch for the second time in the game.

The Mariners play Tuesday at home. LHP Robbie Ray (12-10, 3.60 ERA) faces the Texas Rangers, who have not announced a probable starter.

The Royals and RHP Zack Greinke (4-9, 4.21) play at Detroit on Tuesday against LHP Joey Wentz (2-2, 3.13).

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Kansas City defensive tackle Chris Jones blamed himself for the Chiefs' first loss of the season.

Coach Andy Reid and quarterback Patrick Mahomes accepted responsibility, too.

The truth was there were plenty of head-scratching moments Sunday as the Indianapolis Colts rallied for the go-ahead touchdown with 24 seconds left to steal a 20-17 victory in their home opener.

“It (stinks), man,” Jones said when asked about the unsportsmanlike conduct penalty he drew on Indy's final drive. “It was third down, we got off the field, defense fought hard and I kind of put us in a situation to get back on the field. And then we got scored on, and that sums up the game. So, I’ll take that one. It was my fault. It was definitely my fault.”

Jones thought he was simply having a conversation with Colts quarterback Matt Ryan and didn't know what drew the flag. Ryan said he wasn't sure, either.

According to a postgame pool report, referee Shawn Smith explained the call was for abusive language toward an opponent and additional details would be included in the crew's game report. Either way,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.colts.com/video/highlight-michael-pittman-jr-rips-away-potential-int-translates-it-into-25-yard-">the result was the same — an extended drive that led to the loss</a>.

From Skyy Moore's muffed punt at his own 4-yard line to another misplayed punt that resulted in Kansas City being pinned inside the 1-yard line, Sunday's game was full of missed opportunities.

Yes, the Chiefs converted a 2-point pass just before halftime to erase Matt Ammendola's missed extra point. But they couldn't overcome Ammendola missing a 34-yard field goal to the left, setting up the Colts' final drive.

Or the fake field goal Reid called for on Kansas City's previous possession. Instead of potentially extending the lead to 20-13 with a 42-yarder, Tommy Townsend's pass fell incomplete.

“That’s one I probably shouldn’t have called,” Reid said. "In this league, the parity is crazy so any mistake is magnified. But we thought we could get it.”

Mahomes wasn't happy, either, when the Chiefs (2-1) decided to run out the clock before halftime instead of trying to score again.&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/i/status/1574106345703292928">It resulted in a brief shouting match</a>&nbsp;between the quarterback and offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy before Reid broke it up.

But Mahomes was more upset with the Chiefs' inability to finish drives. In four red-zone trips, only two resulted in touchdowns and both came after turnovers deep in Colts territory.

Otherwise, it was a field goal kind of day.

“As an offense, we’ve got to make it where those little mistakes don’t cause a loss,” Mahomes said after going 20 of 35 for 262 yards, one TD and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.colts.com/video/can-t-miss-play-rodney-mcleod-ices-colts-win-over-chiefs-with-int-on-mahomes">his first interception of the season</a>. "We have multiple chances to get in the end zone. If we get in one time in the second half and don’t stall out at the goal line, we win the game.”

Perhaps even more frustrating was that it all happened against a foe still reeling from last week's embarrassing shutout at Jacksonville and still seeking its first win. This time, though, the Colts (1-1-1) took full advantage of Kansas City's miscues.

They got their first lead of the season three plays after the muffed punt and took the lead for good on Ryan's 12-yard TD pass to rookie Jelanie Woods nine plays after the call on Jones.

“We still have a lot of improving to do and what I’ve found throughout my career is usually you find ways to get better throughout the season,” Ryan said. “But you’ve got to find ways to win till you get there.”

Kansas City, meanwhile, will spend this week looking for solutions after losing for just the third time in Mahomes' 16 career September starts.

“I didn’t think I said anything vulgar or disrespectful, but I just can’t say anything within the heat of the moment,” Jones said. "The game is changing, so I have to evolve to the game.”

HAYS - Fort Hays State lost five fumbles, the last coming inside the Missouri Southern 10-yard line with under a minute to play and lost to the Lions 25-24 Saturday night at Lewis Field.

The Lions (3-1) took the lead on a three-yard touchdown pass from Dawson Herl to tight end Trace Willhite with just under two minutes to play. It capped a 13-play, 99-yard drive that came after the Tigers Adrian Soto fumbled at the MSSU one-yard line.

Jack Dawson connected on passes of 19 and 14 yards to Manny Ramsey which moved to ball to the Lions 27. Dawson had to leave the game after his helmet came off when being tackled. Forrester entered and had a 21-yard run up the middle but fumbled at the end of the play which was originally ruled down by contact. The Lions challenged and the call was overturned.

Southern raced out to a 9-0 first quarter lead, scoring a safety when a snapped when over punter Ethan Sossen's head and out of the back of the end zone. Ezekiel Lang hauled in a 30-yard touchdown pass from backup quarterback Luke Sampson which was set up following an FHSU fumble.

The Tigers (1-3) responded with 21-straight points to build a 21-9 lead. Ethan&nbsp; Forrester got the Tigers on the board with a two-yard run which came after Jeremiah Jackson-Trotter intercepted a Dawson Herl pass folllowing a deflection from Makel Williams.

The Tigers took a 14-0 lead on a four-yard touchdown pass from Jack Dawson to redshirt-freshman tight end Leyton Cure which was set up by a Layke Heimerman interception.

Mason Perez blocked a punt on the Lions following possession and recovered it in the endzone to push the lead to 21-9.

MSSU kicked a 24-yard field goal on their next possession to cut the gap to 21-12. They took advantage of a Tiger fumble to score another touchdown before halftime to close within 21-19.

Hunter Budke hauled in a 29-yard pass down to the MSSU one yard-line but two runs were stuffed at the line of scrimmage and FHSU had to settle for an 18-yard field goal from Emanuel Aguilar as time expired in the second quarter.&nbsp;

Neither team scored in the third quarter.

The Lions ended an eight-game losing streak to the Tigers and a four-game Lewis Field losing streak.

The Tigers have lost five straight home games dating back to 2021. Their last home win came against Nebraska-Kearney on Oct. 2, 2021.

Kansas State: The Wildcats showed resilience and found a way to once again win in Norman — just as they did in 2012, 2014 and 2020. They beat up a defense that had allowed just 30 points in its first three games.

Oklahoma: The Sooners' defense, which was tough during nonconference play, surrendered 509 total yards and 275 yards rushing.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Jalon Daniels accounted for five touchdowns to lead unbeaten Kansas past Duke 35-27 on Saturday afternoon.

Daniels' 3-yard run gave the Jayhawks a 34-20 lead with 4:42 remaining.

It is the first time since 2009 the Jayhawks have started 4-0. They also completed their first undefeated nonconference schedule since 2013.

“It feels amazing to be 4-0,” Daniels said. “To see the amount of excitement in the locker room and in the stadium, we love it."

Daniels went 19-of-23 passing for 324 yards and a career-high four touchdowns. He led the team in rushing with 83 yards and a score.

“Jalon had another great performance,” Kansas head coach Lance Leipold said. “He doesn’t get rattled. ... He put the ball where he needed to, threw into some tight windows and made some plays with his legs. He just doesn’t let the moment get to him."

The Kansas offensive line should get credit for the performances of their backfield this early in the season. The line gave up one sack today, its first this season.

The Jayhawks led 21-13 at halftime thanks to three touchdown passes from Daniels.

HAYS – The Scott City defense held the TMP offense at bay
and despite the Monarchs scoring on defense and special teams TMP suffered their
first loss of the season Friday 28-14 at Lewis Field in Hays.

After Scott City converted on a pair of first downs on their
opening drive only to see the TMP defense come up with the big stop and force a
punt.

The punt pinned TMP inside their own five-yard line, a theme
that would persist throughout the game. 

After a short TMP put Scott City strung together a five
play, 31-yard drive that was capped off by the first of four touchdown runs for
Brady Welker.

Down 7-0 TMP’s Kade Harris returned the ensuing kickoff 94
yards to tie the game at 7 with just over five minutes left in the first
quarter.

Scott City added a second touchdown just two minutes into
the second quarter for a 14-7 lead.

The TMP defense was able to stand tough to end the first
half and maintain the 14-7 score heading into the halftime break.

The two teams played to a stalemate for more than nine
minutes in third quarter before Austin Gilbert forced a Scott City fumble that
Harris returned for a 74-yard touchdown tying the game at 14 each.

The Scott City clamped down on TMP in the fourth quarter
while outscoring the Monarchs 14-0 as the Beavers clinched their ninth straight
win over TMP 28-14.

TMP opens district play next Friday at home against Russell.

GARDEN CITY - Hays High resumed Western Athletic Conference play with one of the two teams they split the league championship with in 2021. The Indians traveled to Garden City Friday night, it was the Buffaloes first WAC game of the season. Hays beat Great Bend two weeks prior to open the conference schedule.

Hays took the opening drive of the game 91 yards on 10 plays and scored on a 4th down 11 yard run by Kyrese Groen. The Indian defense forced a three and out. The offense scored three plays later when Malik Bah broke off a 55 yard scoring run.

Connor Dreiling picked off a Garden City pass on the ensuing drive. Teegan Turnbull turned that drive into three points on a 25 yard field goal, his first make of the season and a 16-0 lead.

The Indian defense forced another three and out and Wyatt Waddell picked off his WAC leading 4th pass of the season for the next two stops. The Garden City defense tightened up and kept Hays to a pair of punts. The Buffalo offense scored after the second of those punts on a run heavy 11 play 67 yard drive for a 16-7 score at halftime.

Bah threw a 70 yard touchdown pass to Trent Summers on the Indians first drive of the second half to build a 23-7 lead. Garden City responded by scoring on their next to possessions of the third quarter closing the gap down to 30-19. Two key plays occurred each of the scores. Evan Lind made tackle on Garden City's two point conversion try and Deondre Broom blocked an extra point.

Bah scored his second touchdown rush of the night on a three yard run for a 30-19 lead follwing the Turnbull extra point with 4:09 remaining. Garden City did score again but with no time left on the clock for a final of 30-26.

Hays improves to 3-1 on the year and 2-0 in the WAC. Garden City falls to 3-1, 0-1. It is the 25th of 62 games between the two teams decided by one possession.
