MAIZE, Kan. – The Hays High boys track and field team won four events and were regional champs at Thursday’s 5A Regional meet hosted by Maize South. The Indians scored 119 points which was 17 more than second place Maize. The HHS girls finished seventh with 51 points. Great Bend won the team title with 118 points, 46 ahead of Hutchinson.
Keamonie Archie won the long jump and was on the first place 4x100 meter relay team along with Deondre Broom, Malik Bah and Chason VenDerWege who broke the school record again with a time of 42.07. Kyreese Groen won the the triple jump and Wyatt Waddell finished first in the javelin.
The Indians qualified 10 individuals in 12 events plus the 4x100, 4x400 relays. Chason VanDerWege is qualified in three events. In addition to being a member of the winning 4x400 relay team, he finished second in the high jump and second in the triple jump.
HHS qualified three in the triple jump and three in the javelin.
The Hays girls finished in seventh place. They qualified six individuals in six events plus the 4x100, 4x400 and 4x800 relays.
Aralen Maupin and Morgan Geerdes qualified in three events. Maupin finished third in the 400 meters and was on the fourth place 4x400 and 4x800 meter relay teams. Geerdes placed third in the triple jump and was on the 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams.
Below is a list of the HHS results at the Maize South 5A regional. The top four in each event qualify for the 5A State Track and Field Meet May 26-27 at Cessna Stadium in Wichita.
