Max Gene Vaughn, 86, of Colby, passed away August 7, 2021, at Citizens 
Medical Center, in Colby, KS. Max was born January 11, 1935, in Selden, 
KS, to Ted and Myrtle (Brown) Vaughn. 
Max spent two years in the United States Army. After that, he was 
self-employed, custom harvesting, running a dirt construction business 
and trucking. He was very creative, could fix anything and did all this 
own repairs. Max enjoyed car racing, in his younger days, as a driver, 
and later, as a spectator in the grandstands. Max was a self-taught 
musician. He particularly enjoyed the “Old Country Music.” He played 
guitar in a band, “Off Limits," and played dances and at the local 
nursing homes. Max was such a people person, and he loved his coffee. He
 could always be found at the local coffee shops entertaining others 
with his witty sense of humor. Max married Beverly Bonner on September 
6, 1984, in Hot Springs, SD. 
Max was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Dean, Donald and Clarence and sisters, Myrna, Clara and Doris. 
He is survived by his wife Bev, of Colby; daughter LaDonna (Joe) Newman,
 of Hoxie, KS; son Rick (Kathy) Vaughn, of Colby, KS; 5 grandchildren 
and 14 great-grandchildren. 
A private graveside service will take place at Beulah Cemetery, Colby.

Max Gene Vaughn

Jack Eugene Broughton, 93, went to be with our Lord on Thursday, 
August 5, 2021, at the Kansas Soldiers Home in Fort Dodge, Kansas.

Jack was born on August 29, 1927, in Shawnee, Oklahoma, the son of 
Leonard Clark and Thelma Theora (Parks) Broughton. He graduated from 
Hoisington Kansas High School and later enlisted in the United States 
Navy. Jack led a long successful illustrious career in the Oil &amp; Gas
 Industry. His dedication was showcased by his myriad of roles spanning 
over 60 years. Jack was highly respected and recognized by many in his 
industry. His work took him many places throughout Kansas, Oklahoma, 
Louisiana, North Dakota, and Colorado. His responsibilities ranged from a
 driller in early years to advanced management in the later.

Nonetheless, in the twilight of his career, Jack chose to work as a 
bus driver in the Larned school system where he used his charm and humor
 to entertain the children whom he shuttled to and from school and their
 events. He was an active member of the Fort Dodge American Legion #107,
 as well as the Hoisington Masonic Lodge. He will be greatly missed by 
all who had the pleasure of experiencing his fun-loving, helpful, and 
charming personality. Jack also cherished the mountains where he often 
ventured, spending many splendorous getaways with those he loved even 
more.

On June 3, 1947, Jack married the love of his life Doris “La Dene” 
Brewer of Hoisington, Kansas and started a family that gifted them their
 seven children. Doris preceded him in death on November 4, 2007. He is 
survived by a daughter, LeeAnn Castaneda and husband Earnest, from 
Springfield, Missouri; two sons, Ron Broughton and wife, Jayne, of 
Owasso, Oklahoma and Jack “Jackie” Broughton from The Woodlands, Texas; 
17 grandchildren; and nine greatgrandchildren. Among other dearly 
departed family members include: two daughters, Kerri Lainge and Lisa 
Broughton, two sons Everett Broughton and Kevin Broughton, and his 
brother and two sisters: Billy Broughton, Loretta French, and Rosalie 
Renz.

A Celebration of Jack’s life will be held Friday, August 13, 2021, at
 1:00 pm at Ziegler Funeral Chapel, Dodge City with Rev. Shawn Fletcher 
officiating. Inurnment will follow in the Kansas Veterans Cemetery, Ft. 
Dodge with full Military Honors by the United States Navy and the Howard
 Gotschall VFW Post 1714. There will be no public viewing, as cremation 
has taken place. Friends and family are welcomed to sign the register 
book Thursday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm at Ziegler Funeral Chapel.

The family has suggested for memorials to be sent to the Ft. Dodge 
Museum in care of Ziegler Funeral Chapel, 1901 N. 14th Ave., Dodge City,

Jack Eugene Broughton

Robert “Bob” Bennett, age 83, passed away on Friday, August 6, 2021, 
at the Dighton Hospital in Dighton, Kansas.&nbsp; He was born on December 6, 
1937, in Shallow Water, Kansas, the son of George J. Bennett and Mary 
Ellen (Fenton) Bennett.&nbsp; A resident of Healy, Kansas since 1965 moving 
from Gove County, Kansas, he was a farmer.

Bob became a member of the Lutheran Church in Scott City at the age of 14.

He attended school at Scott City. Later joining the Army and serving in the 299th Engineer Battalion.

Bob married Carole W. Brown on December 9, 1956, at the Dighton 
Methodist Church. They would have celebrated their 65th wedding 
anniversary this year.

Returning from the service he started working on the farm in Gove 
County for Joe Hanna.&nbsp; Later, Bob was employed by York Brothers of 
Healy.&nbsp; Eventually owning his own farm and raising livestock, wheat, 
milo, and alfalfa.

Survivors include Carole, wife of the home, Three Sons: Jerry 
(Connie) Bennett of Liberal, Kansas. Thomas (Karla) Bennett of Healy, 
Kansas, Arron (Jayme) Bennett of Tonganoxie, Kansas, One Daughter: DoAnn
 Cochran (Alan) of Overland Park, Kansas.&nbsp; 15 Grandchildren and 23 
Great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and all of his siblings, 
Brothers: Ralph, Harold, Jim, and Terry.&nbsp; Sisters: Joyce, Margie, Cathy,
 and Mary.

Memorial Graveside Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, 
August 14, 2021, at the Healy Cemetery in Healy, Kansas with Rev. Bud 
Tuxhorn presiding.

Cynthia C. Goding, 69, passed away August 4, 2021, at Ness County Hospital, Ness City, KS.

She was born April 4, 1952, in Worland, WY, the daughter of Eugene and
 Maxine Bunner Johnson.&nbsp; Moving to Hanston from Nebraska a year ago, she
 was a CNA.&nbsp;

She was of the Christian faith and was a member of the Moose Lodge and Eagles Club, both of Nebraska.

Survivors include: four sons, Matt (Christina) Pattison, Riverton, 
WY, Jason Martens, Fort Collins, CO, Anthony (Valarie) Martens, Hanston,
 KS, Joshua (Jacqueline) Martens, Terre Haute, IN and eighteen 
grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Leland and twin granddaughters, Katlynn and Kassandra.

Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will held at 10 a.m.
 Saturday, August 28, 2021, at the United Presbyterian Church, Jetmore 
with John and Marsha Ewy and Rev. Mark Durham presiding.

Theresa Marie (Leiker) Haselhorst, age 91, died Saturday, August 7, 2021, at the Good Samaritan Society of Hays Care Center.&nbsp; She was born October 5, 1929, at Victoria, Kansas, to Pius and Anna (Sander) Leiker.&nbsp; She married Merlin F. Haselhorst on November 9, 1949, in Victoria, Kansas.&nbsp; He preceded her in death on September 29, 1998.

She was a bookkeeper at Flowers By Frances, Feme’ Bridal Wear and Jay Stewart Electric, and retired in 1990.&nbsp; She grew up in Victoria and was a graduate of Victoria High School. She enjoyed spending time with her family, and camping at Cedar Buff Lake.&nbsp; She enjoyed bingo, reading, watching the Royals and the Chiefs.

Theresa was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Daughters of Isabella, Christian Mothers, Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration Chapel, and a life member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary all of Hays, and she spend many hours volunteering at the Community Assistance Center in Hays.&nbsp;

Survivors include three sons, Ronald Haselhorst and wife, Jojo, Palatine, IL; Mark Haselhorst and wife, Lucia, Alma, KS; Jon Haselhorst, Austin, TX; three daughters, Karen Shotwell and husband, Michael, Sedgwick, KS; Janet Schmidt and husband, David L., Catharine, KS; Lori Conway and Ron Carmack, Spring Hill, KS; one sister, Aquina Rajewski, Vincent, KS, two brothers-in-law, Daniel Schmidtberger and wife, Donna, Hill City, KS; George Gatschet, Hays, KS; three sisters-in-law, Ann Leiker, Hays, KS; Ada Leiker, Great Bend, KS, Janice Leiker, Ellis, KS; 12 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.

Theresa Marie (Leiker) Haselhorst

Patricia Ann “Patti” Hoffman, 72, died Saturday, August 7, 2021, at St. 
Catherine Hospital in Garden City, Kansas. She was born January 12, 
1949, in Russell, Kansas, the daughter of Cecil Jason &amp; Joan (Vlavin) 
Pruitt. 
 Patty moved with her family to Oklahoma when she was a child. In 
1959, they moved to Garden City and Patti has lived in Garden City since.
 She worked for more than 30 years as a dental hygienist in Garden 
City. Patty later became owner and operator of Patti’s Wine &amp; 
Spirits, LLC, and is currently a member of a new venture, Mary Street 
Ice House, LLC. 
 Patti loved to spend her time traveling and loved animals especially her dogs Gracie and Rockie. 
 Survivors include many cousins and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents and a sister Bonnie Lea Calihan. 
 Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 12, 
2021, at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City with Rev. Warren Stecklein 
officiating. The service may also be viewed on Facebook Live on the 
Garnand Funeral Home Facebook page. Burial will follow at Valley View 
Cemetery in Garden City. Friends may call from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Thelma Pauline Hutchinson, 84, of Great Bend, Kansas, and former 
Russell and Paradise, Kansas, resident, died on Friday, August 06, 2021,
 at the Azria Health Care Center in Great Bend, Kansas.

Thelma was born on December 26, 1936, in Wichita, Kansas, the 
daughter of Lester R. and Helen Maude (Dodson) Pfortmiller.&nbsp; She was 
raised by her grandparents Henry and Anna Pfortmiller and grew up and 
attended school in rural Paradise, Kansas, and lived in the Russell, 
Osborne and Barton County, Kansas areas most all her life. &nbsp;She was 
married to Tom Hutchinson on January 25, 1954 in Russell, Kansas.&nbsp; From 
this union Thelma and Tom were blessed with 3 children Sheryl, Randy and
 Bruce.&nbsp; She was a hard-working wife and mother who enjoyed taking care 
of her husband and children. &nbsp;She worked as a certified nurse’s 
assistant and physical therapy aid at the Russell Regional Hospital from
 1980 to 1995.&nbsp; She was a longtime member of St. John Lutheran Church in
 Russell and Trinity Lutheran Church in Great Bend, Kansas.&nbsp; She was 
also a member of the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary, KOOD, ROAR and Palco Art 
Club.&nbsp; She enjoyed being a talented artist creating beautiful oil and 
water color paintings and wood carvings.&nbsp; She enjoyed listening to music
 and watching football on television.&nbsp; Most of all she enjoyed spending 
time with her family and close friends.

Surviving family include her daughter Sheryl Corn and husband Steve 
of Great Bend, Kansas, sons Randy Hutchinson and wife Stephanie of 
Falun, Kansas and Bruce Hutchinson of Hoisington, Kansas; sisters Sue 
Koehler and husband Dan of Lawrence, Kansas and Loa Gordon of Auburn, 
Kansas; 9 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and one great-great 
grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents Lester Pfortmiller and Helen
 Burger and grandparents Henry and Anna Pfortmiller; sister Alice Wiggs 
and one great grandchild Fayelle Hutchinson. A celebration of Thelma’s 
life will be held at 11 A.M. on Friday, August 13, 2021, at the 
Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell, Kansas.&nbsp; Visitation will be

James A. Appel, 74, passed away on Thursday, July 8, 2021, at the St.
 Francis Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas.&nbsp; He was born on April 6, 
1947, in Healy, Kansas, the son of Raymond Jacob and Margaret Jean West 
Appel.&nbsp; A lifetime resident of Scott City, Kansas, he was a carpenter 
and was the past owner and operator of the Pool Hall in Scott City, 
Kansas.

James was a member of the Holy Cross Lutheran Church of Scott City, 
Kansas, and was a US Army Veteran serving from 1968 to 1969.&nbsp; He was 
also a member of the VFW.

On May 29, 2016, he married Jo De Rowe in Scott City, Kansas.&nbsp; She survives.

Survivors include his Wife - Jo De Appel of Scott City, Kansas, One 
Daughter - Meagan J. &amp; Corey Cramer of Manhattan, Kansas, One 
Brother - Terrance &amp; Karen Appel of Scott City, Kansas, One Sister -
 Norene Jaeger of Olathe, Kansas, and Two Granddaughters - Maddison

William Lee Hammack was born in West Plains, Missouri July 17th, 1954,&nbsp; to Herb and Mable (Collins) Hammack. He died August 4th, 2021 at KU Med
 Center surrounded by his family.

He is survived by his wife, Alice; four children: Luke (Kerry), 
Joshua (Lacy), Shelley (Jason), and Rex (Sadee); nine grandchildren: 
Chase, Dalton, Dakota, Kassidy (Aaron), Caitlyn, Brianna, Keirstyn, 
Colt, and Owen; two great granddaughters: Everleigh and Kendyl. A 
Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 PM, Tuesday, August 10, 2021, at

Martha Jane Bollinger, age 85, passed away on Friday, August 6, 2021,
 at the Park Lane Nursing Home in Scott City, Kansas.&nbsp; She was born on 
June 11, 1936, in LaPlata, Missouri, the daughter of Bernard and Blanche
 Willey Campbell.&nbsp; A lifetime resident of Scott City, Kansas, she worked
 for Scott County Law Enforcement for 4 years and then retired from KN 
Energy after 18 years of service.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Scott City, Kansas 
for over 60 years, served as deaconess, ABW Treasurer, Bible Study 
Circle Treasurer, Bible School teacher, Sunday School Teacher, calling 
coordinator for Baptist Senior Fellowship for several years, and was 
also a member of the XiDelta Kappa Sorority division of Alpha Omega 
sorority.

On October 27, 1956, she married Alan Dale Bollinger in Grigston, 
Kansas.&nbsp; He passed away on October 1, 2014, in Scott City, Kansas.

Survivors include her One Son - Dan &amp; Joni Bollinger of Dighton, 
Kansas, Two Daughters - Melinda &amp; André Girod of Colorado Springs, 
Colorado, Tami &amp; Coleby Thomas of Hays, Kansas, Four Granddaughters -
 Julie Fields of Fort Drum, New York, Mishelle Williams of Sevierville, 
Tennessee, Cora Thomas of Hays, Kansas, Stella Thomas of Hays, Kansas,

Jane Bollinger

Jim L. Hilburn was born August 2, 1930, in Campus, Kansas, to Willard and
 Lula (Bunch) Hilburn. Jim went to be with his Lord and Savior on 
Thursday, August 5, 2021, at the Sheridan County Health Complex Long Term
 Care. He graduated from Sheridan County High School in 1949. On May 
13, 1951, Jim married Marjorie Kathrine Morgan. They were residents of 
Hoxie all their married life. Jim worked for Deibert Construction 
initially and then began working for Central Kansas Power Company 
(Midwest Energy) in September 1951 and remained with them as lineman and
 foreman through December 1987.
 Jim truly loved the Lord. He was a Gideon. Jim was baptized in the
 Hoxie Christian Church and served at the church as Chairman of the 
Board, Elder, Trustee, Deacon, Property Chairman, and Sunday School 
teacher for over 35 years and any other position he was needed. He and 
Marj hosted a Bible Study in their home for 40 years. Jim also served 
on the Board of Directors of the Historical Society for several years 
and on the Board of Ridgewood Manor for many years as well. He operated
 the little cars at the Sheridan County Fair for the Hoxie Christian 
Church. Jim enjoyed helping Leonard at the farm, loved horses, watching
 rodeos, square dancing and playing cards. Jim was a hard worker and 
never slowed down.
 Jim is survived by his son, Bill and wife Ruth Morgan, a daughter 
Carol Sewell and husband Leonard; siblings, Margaret, Keith, Clarence 
and Grace; twelve grandchildren; thirty-two great-grandchildren; 30 
great-great-grandchildren; and many friends.

Rita M. (Schoendaller) Leiker, age 94 
of Hays, Kansas, died Thursday, August 5, 2021, at her home.&nbsp; She was born
 June 7, 1927, in Hays, Kansas, to Jacob F. and Susanna (Brungardt) 
Schoendaller.&nbsp; She married Norman A. Leiker on January 16, 1970, in 
Niles, Kansas.

She was a Learning Disability 
Specialist and a Reading Specialist teacher in various school districts 
for the Salina and Wichita Diocese for 45 years.&nbsp; She retired in 1992 
and moved to Hays in 2015 from Wichita.&nbsp; She was a member of Immaculate 
Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Hays, Kansas.

She is survived by her husband, 
Norman A. Leiker, of the home; one brother, Jacob C. Schoendaller and 
wife, Mary Ann, Great Falls, MT; one sister-in-law, Barbara Clarke, 
Hays, KS.

She was preceded in death by her 
parents; two brothers, Alvin Schoendaller, Robert Schoendaller; five 
sisters, Loretta Giebler, Mary Schurr, Armella Melson, Germaine 
Holmgrem, Mildred Hoagland; and one infant brother, John Schoendaller.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 
at 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, August 11, 2021, at Immaculate Heart of Mary 
Catholic Church, 18th and Vine, Hays, Kansas with Father Nick Parker 
officiating.&nbsp; Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Hays, Kansas.

A vigil service and rosary will be
 at 7:00 P.M. Tuesday, at Cline’s-Keithley Mortuary of Hays, 1919 East 
22nd Street, Hays, Kansas 67601.

Visitation will be from 6:00 to 
9:00 P.M. Tuesday, at Cline’s-Keithley Mortuary of Hays and form 9:00 to
 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, at the Church.

William Lee Hammack was born in West Plains, Missouri July 17th, 1954, to Herb and Mable (Collins) Hammack. He died August 5th, 2021, at KU Med Center surrounded by his family.

He is survived by his wife, Alice; four children: Luke (Kerry), Joshua (Lacy), Shelley (Jason), and Rex (Sadee); nine grandchildren: Chase, Dalton, Dakota, Kassidy (Aaron), Caitlyn, Brianna, Keirstyn, Colt, and Owen; two great granddaughters: Everleigh and Kendyl.&nbsp;

William Lee Hammack

Larry Frederick Kruse was born Nov. 27, 1943, in San Francisco, 
California, to Ervin Frederick and Mildred Lucille (Jording) Kruse, the 
eldest of two sons.&nbsp; His mother remarried while he was quite young, and 
he was raised by his step-father, Veere Cochran, along with two 
step-brothers.

He grew up in northwest Kansas and spent his formative 
years in the Selden community, graduating from Selden Rural High School 
in 1961.&nbsp; He attended Fort Hays State University and graduated with a 
Baccalaureate Degree in 1966, a Master's Degree in 1969, and was named 
the recipient of the first Fort Hays State University Furlough 
Scholarship.&nbsp; While at FHSU, he married Nikki Lynn Pope on May 25, 
1965.&nbsp; Four daughters were born to this union, which later ended in 
divorce.

Larry spent his professional career in education, serving
 first as a high school teacher at Triplains High School in Winona, 
Kansas and then as one of the first faculty members at Barton County 
Community College in Great Bend, Kansas.&nbsp; He then became the Dean of 
Student Services at Seward County Community College from 1974 until 
1991.

On December 31, 1982, he was united in marriage to Cecelia
 Shaw Krause.&nbsp; The family moved to Stillwater, Oklahoma, in 1991 where 
Larry assumed responsibility for the recruitment and admission of new 
students at Oklahoma State University.&nbsp; While at OSU, Larry earned a 
Doctorate in Higher Education Administration.&nbsp; He continued in his 
position at OSU for 12 years before accepting the position of Vice 
President for Student Services at Cameron University, a post he held 
until his retirement in 2006.

During his 40-year career in education he held leadership
 positions in several organizations including President of the Kansas 
Community College Deans of Student Services; Vice-president and 
President-elect of the Kansas Association of Student Financial Aid 
Administrators; President of the Barton County Community College Faculty
 Association; Board of Directors Kansas Association of Student Financial
 Aid Administrators; Advisory Board of the Higher Education Assistance 
Foundation; ACT Regional Council; two-time selectee for the Council of 
North Central Dean's Academy; selectee for the National Financial Aid 
Leadership Conference; and Regional Representative for the Rocky 
Mountain Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators.

He was also a member of many civic and social 
organizations including the Masonic Lodge since 1968, the BPOE, Lions 
Club, volunteer for American Heart Association, and volunteer for the 
American Cancer Society.&nbsp; He was a founding member of the Mid-America 
Air Museum in Liberal, Kansas; and served on the Chamber of Commerce 
Education Committee while in Liberal.&nbsp; He was a life-long member of the 
Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod.

He was the recipient of many awards during his career, 
including being named to Outstanding Young Men of America, listed in 
Who's Who in American Education, being inducted into Phi Kappa Phi, the 
National Honorary Academic Fraternity, and selected to Leadership 
Lawton.&nbsp; An entertaining speaker, he delivered the keynote address to 
the Kansas Author's Convention, the Kansas Press Women's Annual 
Convention, and spoke at numerous banquets, conventions, high school and
 community college commencements, and various other meetings throughout 
his professional life.&nbsp; He both published articles and made 
presentations throughout the nation on his area of expertise, enrollment
 management, and wrote his doctoral dissertation on the same subject as 
it related to community colleges in Kansas and Oklahoma.

Throughout his entire life he continued to pursue a hobby
 that he had begun as a young boy--designing, building and flying model 
airplanes.&nbsp; He won many national championships and awards for his 
designs, and published over 900 articles for national model aviation 
magazines. He wrote for the national publication, Flying Models
 magazine, for over 40 years, including writing a monthly column called 
"Free Flight Sport" from 1982 until 2013.&nbsp; For his efforts in the hobby,
 he was named to the National Free Flight Hall of Fame in 2005, the 
Flying Aces Hall of Fame in 2010, and the Academy of Model Aeronautics 
Model Aviation Hall of Fame in 2014.

More important than his many professional and avocation 
successes, Larry dedicated his life to helping young people make good 
choices and succeed in their own lives.&nbsp; As was said of him upon his 
retirement from Cameron University, "More important than the various 
positions in which Larry has excelled are the number of students' lives 
he has forever altered and impacted. His legacy is one to be admired and
 applauded."&nbsp;

He delighted in the progress of his own children and 
grandchildren, showing love and support for all of their successes as 
well as their failures, and making sure they knew his love was 
unconditional.&nbsp; While he was not intrusive as they grew into adulthood, 
he was always there; ready to advise and assist when they came to him.

He was pre-deceased by his parents, grandparents, and 
step-brothers Larry and Myron Cochran.&nbsp; Survivors include his loving 
wife, Cecelia, of the home; brother, Terry (Nancy) Kruse, Russellville, 
Missouri; children, Shawna (Clarence) Pittser, Liberal, Kansas; Koby 
Krause, Pewaukee, Wisconsin; Kory (Julie) Krause, Liberal, Kansas; 
Kimberly (Mark) Coople, Salina, Kansas; Kerri (Kenneth) Lee, Bel Air, 
Kansas; Keela (Darcy) Nickel, Goessel, Kansas; Kalynn Kruse, Dallas, 
Texas; eight grandchildren, and thirteen great-grandchildren.

Larry passed away on Monday, August 2, 2021, after a 
valiant battle with a rare and aggressive form of cancer.&nbsp; There will be
 no funeral arrangements at this time. A Celebration of Life will be 
scheduled at a later date.&nbsp; In lieu of flowers, the family requests that
 memorials be sent to the “Dr. Larry F. and Cecelia A. Kruse 
Scholarship" fund at the Seward County Community College Foundation,

Dr. Larry Frederick Kruse

Doris (Dixon) Stowell, daughter of Jay and Marion (Hart) Dixon, was 
born April 5, 1924, in Herington, Kansas, and passed away on June 11, 2021,&nbsp; at the home of her daughter, Susan, in Long Beach, California.

Doris began college at William Woods University in Fulton, Missouri.&nbsp;
 She then went on to graduate from Kansas University in Lawrence, Kansas
 with her JD law degree.

While at law school, Doris met her future husband, William Stowell, 
and the couple was married on May 25, 1946, in the Danforth Chapel on the
 KU campus in Lawrence, Kansas.

William and Doris made their home in Phillipsburg, Kansas, and opened 
their private law practice.&nbsp; The couple enjoyed many years of helping 
others through their work and appreciated the relationships developed 
over time.

On May 25, 2011, Doris and William celebrated their 65th 
wedding anniversary.&nbsp; Their relationship was built on love and 
commitment, and grew stronger as they spent the years together, sharing 
daily life, work, and raising a family.&nbsp; In later years, they also 
enjoyed the special times spent with their four grandchildren and 
introducing them to the joys and beauty of Kansas and rural life.

Doris was a member of the United Presbyterian Church and enjoyed many
 years of worship, music, and volunteering in the church.&nbsp; She was a 
member of Alpha Chi Omega in college and stayed involved after 
graduation.&nbsp; Doris was a member of the BE P.E.O. chapter in Phillipsburg
 and appreciated their mission to support advancement and education of 
women.

Doris enjoyed her daily life, friendships, reading, gardening, and 
the comfort of living in a close community where friendly faces and kind
 words were plentiful.&nbsp; She continued to reap the benefits of life in 
Phillipsburg, as she was supported through the end of life with phone 
calls, emails, and letters from her friends back home.

Doris passed away on June 11, 2021 and is now in her heavenly home.&nbsp; 
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband William, who 
died in 2012.

Survivors include her daughters Susan Bittner and husband Tom of Long
 Beach, CA and Sarah Ruhlen and husband Tom of Sun City West, AZ, her 
granddaughter Laurel Ruhlen, grandson Jay Bittner, granddaughter Morgan 
Bittner, grandson Zachary Bittner, and great granddaughter Leila 
Bittner.

Doris’ smile, laughter, and ability to listen and support will be greatly missed by family and friends.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 28, 2021, at 2:00 
p.m. in the United Presbyterian Church, Phillipsburg, with Pastor Chris 
Davis officiating.

Doris (Dixon) Stowell

Teresa Elaine (Webb) Terpening of Abilene was born to Dee L. and Phyllis 
(Pauley) Webb on August 8, 1949, in Hays, Kansas as the oldest of 6 
children. She died August 2, 2021, at KU Medical Center following a long
 and courageous battle with cancer. She married Harold Terpening on 
November 26, 1971, in Woodston, Kansas. 
She attended the Pleasant Valley School, District 11, in rural Osborne 
County through 4th grade. She continued school in Woodston from 5th 
Grade through high school and graduated in 1967. Following graduation, 
she attended and graduated from Kansas State Teachers College, now 
Emporia State University, and graduated in three and a half years with a

teacher, a reading specialist for elementary students, and the sponsor 
of student activities. She taught in the public schools as a first 
grade and special reading/math teacher in Axtell, Palco, Morland, 
Lenora, Abilene, Mankato, and Solomon, Kansas and was very active in the
 activities in those schools. One of her favorite things in all of the 
schools was her time spent as a cheerleading sponsor. 
Through her professional and personal life Teresa was an active member 
of Beta Sigma Phi for 20 years, PEO Chapter JQ since 1991, KS State 
Reading Council, State Reading Analyst, and served in a variety of 
positions at their churches throughout the years including in the Youth 
Department, a member of and Director of the Choir, Church 
Secretary/Treasurer, and currently on the board of the Missions 
Ministry. 
Teresa’s favorite charities and causes include her church, Leukemia and 
Lymphoma research, the Cancer Society and the American Heart 
Association. 
She felt that the most important things in her life were her family and 
her teaching career. To her family she leaves this advice “Smile, be 
kind, and love each other. When all is said and done, you have each 
other.” If asked, she would share that her most significant desire is 
that her granddaughters are productive, loving, God fearing young 
ladies, and her students being successful in their endeavors. She will 
be remembered by all as kind and giving of herself. 
Teresa was preceded in death by her infant daughter Carol Ann; her 
parents; her in-laws Dean and Eileen Cox; her grandparents; her only 
aunt and uncle, Everett and Eda Jean Hildreth and their daughter 
Raenetta Billings. 
She is survived and will be deeply missed by her husband, Harold; son 
Jonathan Terpening (Sandy) and his daughters Brianna and Tia; daughter 
Kristy Druse (Kelly Miller), her daughters Konlynn and Bethany; sisters;

(Pauley) Webb on August 8, 1949, in Hays, Kansas as the oldest of 6 
children. She died August 2, 2021, at KU Medical Center following a long
 and courageous battle with cancer. She married Harold Terpening on 
November 26, 1971, in Woodston, Kansas. 
She attended the Pleasant Valley School, District 11, in rural Osborne 
County through 4th grade. She continued school in Woodston from 5th 
Grade through high school and graduated in 1967. Following graduation, 
she attended and graduated from Kansas State Teachers College, now 
Emporia State University, and graduated in three and a half years with a
 degree in elementary education. She served many years as a classroom

Mary Anne Kline, 88, of Hays, Kansas, died Wednesday, August 4, 2021, at Via Christi Village Care Center Hays, Kansas.&nbsp; She was born August 12, 1932 in Marion, Virginia to Raymond V. and Elizabeth A. (Wolfe) Taylor.&nbsp; She married Gerald R. Kline on April 24, 1952 in LaCrosse, Kansas.&nbsp; He preceded her in death on January 12, 2012.

Mary Anne was employed at Southwestern Bell for 32 yeas as an operator and draft clerk.

She retired in 1989 and was a AT &amp; T Pioneer Life Member.&nbsp; She grew up in Marion, VA and was a 1949 graduate of Marion High School.&nbsp; She moved to Hays in 1973 from La Crosse, Kansas.&nbsp; Mary Anne enjoyed playing cards, cooking, reading, going to the casinos, and loved the ocean and spending time with her family.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Survivors include her son, Mike Kline, Hays, KS; daughters, Debbie Leiker and husband, Ron, Lyons, KS; Susan Willming and husband, Kent, Hays, KS; four grandchildren, Lachelle Spann and Shawn; Latasha Southern and Bryce; Brett Leiker and Lisa Hagley; Brian and Kalie Leiker; the grandchildren, Nicole Spann, Austin Spann, Kelsi Spann; Brock Southern; Ashley Leiker, Brayden Leiker, Aubrey Leiker, Brody Leiker, Jade Leiker, Lexi Leiker.

Petronilla “Nellie” Giebler, 85, Hays, died Wednesday, August 4, 2021, at her home.

She was born August 22, 1935, southwest 
of Antonino, Kansas, the daughter of Peter and Sophie (Pfannenstiel) 
Leiker. &nbsp;Nellie attended Girls Catholic High School and was a graduate 
of Hays High School in the class of 1953.&nbsp;&nbsp; On June 20, 1953, she was 
united in marriage to Harold James Giebler at St. Joseph Catholic 
Church.&nbsp; They celebrated 64 years of marriage before he preceded her in 
death on December 31, 2017. &nbsp;She was a member of Immaculate Heart of 
Mary Catholic Church and the Daughters of Isabella Circle #254. &nbsp;Nellie 
was a homemaker and longtime community volunteer, earning the Hays 
Citizen of the Year award in 2007.&nbsp; She volunteered at the Community 
Assistance Center for more than 30 years, Hays Medical Center, was a 4-H
 leader, election poll worker, and Saturday bingo volunteer at Hays Good
 Samaritan Society.&nbsp; She was an avid reader, and enjoyed sewing and 
flower gardening.&nbsp; Her faith was central in her life and she was a 
longtime perpetual adorer and sang in the church choir.

Survivors include her son: Andrew 
Giebler and wife Tara of Benton, four daughters: Cecilia Burke and 
husband Marty of Lawrence, Rose Coon and husband Steve of Topeka, Teresa
 Schrant and husband Larry of Hays, and Barbara Gonzalez and husband 
Mike of Wichita, 18 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, and numerous 
nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Harold, infant son: Stephen Giebler, and five siblings: Yette, Leo, Effie, Norbert and Mary Lou.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 
10:00 am on Monday, August 9, 2021, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic 
Church, with Fr. Nick Parker officiating. Burial will follow in St.

Alfreda Karlin, Catherine, Kansas, age 88, passed away June 5, in Brentwood, Tennessee, where she lived with her daughter. Alfreda died from Alzheimer’s Disease.&nbsp;

Alfreda was born on May 16, 1933, in Hays, to Alfred and Constance (Novak) Wiesner. She was their only child. She married Wilfric Karlin, Catherine, on August 1, 1962, and they were married until his death February 13, 2002. Together they had 2 children, 5 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.&nbsp;

Alfreda’s father, Alfred, was a butcher and ran the family grocery store, Wiesner’s, on Main Street. As a girl, Alfreda loved to visit her father in the store and help with grocery deliveries. She loved being outdoors, gardening, riding her bike around Hays and going to the country to ride her horses and to fish. She was also an avid reader, a hobby that gave her much pleasure her entire life. She attended, St. Joseph’s Parochial School, Girl’s Catholic High and Fort Hays State University. She graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education in 1955 and taught 2nd grade for 7 years at Immaculate Heart of Mary Elementary, now Holy Family Elementary.&nbsp;

In 1962, she married Wilfric Karlin and they made their home together on a farm near Catherine. Alfreda gave up teaching to raise her two children John Karlin and Ruth Karlin Albrecht. She continued her love of teaching as an elementary religious ed teacher for the Catherine parish for many years where she was a member. Alfreda loved the country life. She loved animals and flowers and the beauty of nature. She took long walks on the family farm several times a day. She loved to travel and see the world. She visited all 50 states, both neighboring countries, and took many trips abroad to Europe, China and Australia. But she always loved returning to her home on the farm where she lived until 2016.&nbsp;

Alfreda moved to Nashville to live with her daughter Ruth and son-in-law John Albrecht in 2016. There, she was cared for in the home as her Alzheimer’s disease progressed.&nbsp;

She is survived by her son, John Karlin, and wife Susan of Catherine; her daughter, Ruth Albrecht, and husband John, of Brentwood, TN; grandchildren, Jake Karlin, and wife, Emily, of Catherine; Jordan Ottley, and husband Jordan, of Catherine; Alex Barrett of Nashville, TN; Kendra Karlin of Kansas City, KS; Austen Berry, and husband David of Nashville, TN, and six great grandchildren, Liberty, Bella, and Lily Karlin and Josie, Lucy, and Oliver Ottley.&nbsp;

Alfreda Karlin

Eric Eugene Pfeifer, 31, died on March 
5, 2021, from complications of Type 1 diabetes, at his home in 
Warrensburg, Missouri.&nbsp; He was a 2007 graduate of Victoria High School.

He was born in Joplin, Missouri on 
December 13, 1989, and lived most of his childhood in Carthage, 
Missouri.&nbsp; Eric joined the Tom and Kathy Pfeifer family when he was five
 years old.&nbsp; Eric served two years in the United States Air Force and 
was a member of the Honor Guard.

Eric had an infectious grin and enjoyed
 visiting with everyone; he found Victoria connections wherever he was, 
occasionally even in Warrensburg.&nbsp; Eric was always ready to talk about 
his beloved Kansas City and KU sports teams or his pets.&nbsp; However, 
friends, family, and community were the things he valued most.&nbsp; He 
claimed that family vacations as a child were some of the best times of 
his life; and, as an adult, he began planning his next visit with family
 on the return trip from seeing them.

When he graduated from high school, his
 Grandma Arlene Pfeifer asked him what he wanted to do with his life.&nbsp; 
He responded, “Get married and have a family.”

Eric is survived by his son Austin; his
 parents Tom and Kathy Pfeifer; siblings: Matt, Nick, Shelly, Cody, and 
Ashlyn Pfeifer, Derek Sage, and Dorsie Schrum; and several nieces and 
nephews.&nbsp; He leaves behind Jennifer Ridge and her three daughters and 
Ashly Sollars-Pfeifer.&nbsp; Eric was preceded in death by an unborn child.&nbsp;
 Eric also leaves behind three grandparents: Al and Arlene Pfeifer of 
Victoria and Gordon King of Council Grove, KS.&nbsp; He is survived by 
numerous aunts and uncles.

Inurnment is scheduled for Friday, 
August, 13, 2021 at 11:00 am at the Kansas Veterans’ Cemetery in 
WaKeeney, with Fr. Charles Steier officiating.

Warrensburg, Missouri.&nbsp; He was a 2007 graduate of Victoria High School.He was born in Joplin, Missouri on 
December 13, 1989, and lived most of his childhood in Carthage, 
Missouri.&nbsp; Eric joined the Tom and Kathy Pfeifer family when he was five
 years old.&nbsp; Eric served two years in the United States Air Force and 
was a member of the Honor Guard.Eric had an infectious grin and enjoyed
 visiting with everyone; he found Victoria connections wherever he was, 
occasionally even in Warrensburg.&nbsp; Eric was always ready to talk about 
his beloved Kansas City and KU sports teams or his pets.&nbsp; However, 
friends, family, and community were the things he valued most.&nbsp; He 
claimed that family vacations as a child were some of the best times of 
his life; and, as an adult, he began planning his next visit with family
 on the return trip from seeing them.When he graduated from high school, his
 Grandma Arlene Pfeifer asked him what he wanted to do with his life.&nbsp; 
He responded, “Get married and have a family.”Eric is survived by his son Austin; his
 parents Tom and Kathy Pfeifer; siblings: Matt, Nick, Shelly, Cody, and 
Ashlyn Pfeifer, Derek Sage, and Dorsie Schrum; and several nieces and 
nephews.&nbsp; He leaves behind Jennifer Ridge and her three daughters and 
Ashly Sollars-Pfeifer.&nbsp; Eric was preceded in death by an unborn child.&nbsp;
 Eric also leaves behind three grandparents: Al and Arlene Pfeifer of 
Victoria and Gordon King of Council Grove, KS.&nbsp; He is survived by 
numerous aunts and uncles.Inurnment is scheduled for Friday, 
August, 13, 2021 at 11:00 am at the Kansas Veterans’ Cemetery in 
WaKeeney, with Fr. Charles Steier officiating.Memorial contributions are suggested to
 the Eric Pfeifer Memorial Fund for his son Austin’s education.&nbsp; They

Eric Eugene Pfeifer

Eloene Lois “Ellen” Cunningham passed away on Wednesday, August 4, 2021,
 at the Solomon Valley Manor in Stockton, Kansas at the age of 92. She 
was born on June 14, 1929, at the family farm in Rooks County to James 
and Caroline (Smith) Albright.
 Ellen was a lifelong resident to Rooks County and attended Stockton 
High School. After school she married Linus Rogers. The couple was 
blessed with four children: David, Patti, Loie, and Jim. She spent her 
early years raising the children and taking care of the home until they 
became old enough to go to school. She then started work at the 
courthouse in the Treasurer’s Office and later became a Probate Judge 
Assistant, and then a Probate Judge. After the years working for the 
county, she became a bookkeeper for a local Ford dealership until she 
and Linus became owners of K &amp; R Tanking Service. Before Linus’s 
passing in 1992, they sold the dealership and retired. Ellen and Linus 
loved to square dance weekly, even several times a week with the 
“Swingin’ Wheels” square dancers. She league-bowled for 40 years and was
 also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary for many years.
 In 2002 Ellen married DeVane Cunningham and the couple enjoyed 
almost 20 years together. They enjoyed traveling and just enjoying their
 retirement together. Ellen stayed busy with her friends and family. She
 cut and permed hair for friends and the kids, took care of some local 
elders, was very involved in her grandchildren’s lives, and when she had
 some time to herself, she sewed, crocheted, admired the butterflies she
 attracted with the milkweed she grew, and played the piano. 
 She is preceded in death by her parents, James and Caroline 
Albright; siblings, Donald Albright, Lela Doughty, and Ruth Albright; 
son-in-law, Jerry Sterling; and one great-grandson, Christian Sterling.
 Ellen is survived by her children, David (Merena) Rogers of Nixa, 
MO, Patti (Jerry) Sterling of Stockton, KS, Loie (Jim) Lewin of Salina, 
KS, and Jim Rogers (Lorna) of Stockton, KS; sister, Ruth; ten 
grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.
 A Funeral Service will be held on Monday, August 9, 2021, at 2 PM at
 the funeral home in Stockton. Visitation will also be held Monday at 
the funeral home from 10 AM until service time. 
 In Lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Solomon Valley Manor 
and may be sent in care of Plumer-Overlease Funeral Home, 723 North

Lela Doughty, 87, passed away on November 29, 2020, in Shawnee, Kansas.
 Lela was born December 24, 1932, in Stockton, Kansas, to Caroline 
and James Albright. After her marriage the family moved to Osborne 
where Lela was an active member of the First Christian Church and the 
Saddle Club. Lela returned to school to complete her GED when her 
children were grown and subsequently worked at the Beloit Youth Center, 
which was a great source of pride to both herself and her family.
 Upon the death of her husband Stanley Doughty Lela moved to Beloit 
and spent her remaining years there, active in the Beloit First 
Christian Church.
 She is survived by her children Diana Thayer, Beverly Roman, Steven Doughty and Timothy Doughty.
 A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 25th, at Main
 Street Christian Church, 602 Main St., Stockton, Kansas, at 11:00 a.m.
