
Norman Howard “Norm” Staats, 84, died Tuesday, August 24, 2021, at his
home in Garden City, Kansas. He was born August 24, 1937, in Stafford,
Kansas, the son of Leo Herschel & Daisy Maxine (Brown) Staats.
Norman grew up and attended schools in Sylvia, Kansas. After
graduating from Sylvia High School he attended and earned a Master’s
degree from Kansas State University. On August 30, 1959, he married
LuEtta Jean Berschauer in WaKeeney, Kansas. They moved to Garden City
in 1960 and have lived in Garden City since. Norm taught at Garden City
High School for a short time. He then taught at Garden City Community
College for 39 years. He also started the Rodeo program at the college
and served as Rodeo coach for 33 years. Norm was a member of St. James
Lutheran Church of Garden City, the Kansas National Education
Association, the Kansas Vocational Association, Alpha Tau Omega, and
ROTC at Kansas State University. Norman’s hobbies include woodworking,
gardening, and traveling with his family.
Survivors include his wife LuEtta Staats of the home; 4 children
Kevin (Anitta) Staats of Wamego, Kansas, Brian (Tanya) Staats of Great
Bend, Kansas, Troy (Annie) Staats of Menlo, Kansas, Todd (Janelle)
Staats of Garden City, Kansas; a brother Herschel (Phyllis) Staats of
Lincoln, Nebraska; a sister Beulah (Milam) Jones of Dodge City, Kansas;
12 Grandchildren Jonathan (Molly) Staats of Shawnee, KS, Amanda (TJ)
Bullock of Wamego, KS, Charell (Jeremy) Owings of Hoisington, KS, Cierra
(Darin) Einsel of Mullinville, KS, Chanelle Staats (Sean Brooks) of
Elizabethton, TN, Collin (Anna) Rous of Prairie Village, KS, Amber
(Aron) Yingling of WaKeeney, KS, Elizabeth (Tim) McElroy of Hays, KS,
Jennie (Trevin) Pfanenstiel of Menlo, KS, Brandon (Megan) Staats of
Dodge City, KS, Brooklyn Staats of Garden City, KS, & Danielle
McNeal of Hawaii; and 16 Great-Grandchildren Jasper Staats, Sloan
Staats, Nathan Bullock, Shayann Bullock, Declan Owings, Dayton Owings,
Fairyn Brooks, Hunter Yingling, Mason Yingling, Tucker Yingling, Maisie
McElroy, Maverick McElroy, Ellsie Pfanenstiel, Kaisley Pfanenstiel,
Gunner Pfanenstiel, & Miya McNeal. Norm is preceded in death by his
parents.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, August 27,
2021, at St. James Lutheran Church in Garden City with Rev. Teri
Sutherlin officiating. Services may also be viewed on Facebook Live on
the Garnand Funeral Home Facebook page. A graveside service will be
held at 4:00 p.m. also on Friday, August 27, at the Sylvia Cemetery in
Sylvia, Kansas. Friends may call from Noon to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday at
Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City, and the family will be at the
funeral home from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday to visit with
friends.
The family suggests memorials given to St. James Lutheran Church or to the Garden City Community College Rodeo Team, both in care of the funeral home.
