Legendary Kansas high school football coach and Kansas
Sports Hall of Fame inductee Roger Barta has passed away at the age of 79 as first
reported by Kansas Pregame.

Barta won eight state championships as the head coach at
Smith Center and holds state records for consecutive wins, consecutive playoff
wins and most undefeated seasons. He also holds the state record for career
winning percentage (.826).

Barta was born in Ellsworth, Kan. on July 11, 1945 but grew
up in Plainville and was a 1967 graduate of Plainville High School. He earned a
bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Fort Hays State University in 1967 then
earned his Master’s Degree from the University of Georgia in 1971.

He was an assistant coach at Atwood, Tonganoxie and WaKeeney
before being hired as head coach at Smith Center in 1978 where he took the Redmen
to the state title game in his second season and won their first state title in
his fifth season. Smith Center would go on to win eight titles (1982, 1986,
1999, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008) under Barta who retired in 2012 with a
career coaching record of 323-68.

Barta guided Smith Center to five consecutive undefeated
seasons from 2004-08, winning 79 straight games, both state records and was featured
in a best-selling book “Our Boys: A Perfect Season on the Plains” from New York
Times sportswriter Joe Drape chronicling the 2008 season.

Barta was inducted into the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame in
2014.

HAYS – Four Hays Larks pitchers combined on a no-hitter as
the Larks finished off a three-game sweep of the Denver Cougars with an 11-0
run-rule win Sunday evening at Larks Park. It’s the first combined no-hiitter
since July 18, 2022 when Austin Puett, Hunter Parker and Chris Echavarria did
it against the Colorado Tribe.

Starter Nick Gray (2-0) went the first three innings and was
awarded the win after striking out seven and walking one. Jordan Stribling and
Lane Sparks followed with one inning each. Adrian Najar went the final two
innings with two strikeouts and no walks. The four combined to strike out 12
and walk only two.

The Larks (7-1-1) scored four runs in the first inning. Four
straight walks with two outs scored the first run. Lorenzo Rios drove in the
second run when he was hit by a pitch. Mason Hamlin added a two-run single.

Hays added three more runs in the third. Two walks and hit
batter loaded the bases. CJ Reid hit a sacrifice fly to left to drive in the first
run. Taber Stokes followed with a two-run single to push the lead to 7-0.

Dylan LaRue hit a two-run homer in the fourth to give the
Larks a 9-0 lead. Hamlin added an RBI double and Stokes an RBI single to close
out the scoring. 

Stokes and Hamlin both had two of the Larks five hits and
both drove in three runs as the Larks took advantage of nine walks and five hit
batters.

The Larks seven-game homestand continues Thursday against the
Gameday Angels in the first of a four0game series at Larks Park.

⚾ Larks no-hit Cougars to finish off three-game sweep

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Nick Kurtz hit a solo ninth-inning homer to rally the Athletics to a 3-2 win and three-game sweep of the Kansas City Royals on Sunday.

Kurtz hit Carlos Estévez’s (2-2) fastball 411 feet to right-center for his sixth home run. It gave the Athletics their first sweep at Kauffman Stadium since September 2016.

T.J. Ferguson (2-2) retired all four batters he faced, striking out two to earn the win and Mason Miller struck out two for his 14th save.

The Royals matched their longest losing streak of the season while dropping all six games of their homestand. Kansas City has lost six straight home series.

Austin Wynns hit a two-run homer to left-center off reliever John Schreiber, tying the game 2-2 in the sixth. It was Wynns’ fifth home run and second in five games since his acquisition from the Cincinnati Reds.

Royals starter Noah Cameron struck out seven in five scoreless innings.

After Kyle Isbel doubled off first baseman Kurtz’s glove to open the third, Bobby Witt Jr. snapped an 0-for-16 slump with an RBI double and moved to third on Jeffrey Springs’ balk before scoring on Vinnie Pasquantino’s single for a 2-0 lead.

With the Athletics trailing 2-0 in the fifth, Lawrence Butler hit a two-out double, and then was caught stealing third to end the inning. Butler was initially ruled safe by third base umpire Adrian Johnson, who quickly changed his call, prompting an unsuccessful argument from A’s manager Mark Kotsay.

The Royals have been outscored 44-15 in the sixth inning.

The Athletics host the Houston Astros on Monday to open a four-game series.

RHP Seth Lugo (3-5, 3.18) opens the Royals road series in Texas on Tuesday.

HAYS – The Hays Larks jumped out to an early lead then held off a late rally and defeated the Denver Cougars 6-3 Saturday night at Larks Park. The Larks are now 6-1-1 overall and 4-1 in the Rocky Mountain Baseball League.  The Cougars dropped to 2-4 and 0-2 in the RMBL.

The Larks opened the second inning with back-to-back singles from CJ Reid and Paul Smith. Reid later scored when Brady Kreutzer reached on an error. L Rios scored the second run of the inning on a passed ball.

Kreutzer homered to lead off the fourth to push the lead to 3-0.

The Larks loaded the bases with one out in the sixth but only scored one run on a passed ball. They added two in the seventh on a Smith RBI double. He later scored on a wild pitch to make the score 6-0.

The Cougars rallied in the eighth with a leadoff walk and one out error. They then scored runs on a single, an error and groundout. They would get two on with one out in the ninth but a caught stealing at third and strikeout ended the game.

Paul Smith and Lorenzo Rios both had two hits. Brady Kreutzer drove in two runs

Braxton Bjur (2-0) pitched four scoreless innings allowing three hits with two strikeouts and no walks and was awarded the win. Nolan Wilson pitched one scoreless inning of relief followed by Julio Ramos who gave up one hit with three strikeouts over two innings. Trent Baker pitched the final two innings and allowed three unearned runs with three strikeouts and two walks.

The Larks and Cougars wrap up the three-game series with a non-league game Sunday at 6:00 p.m. at Larks Park.

⚾ Larks hold off Cougars to take RMBL series

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Jacob Lopez became the latest pitcher to shut down the Royals with six innings of three-hit ball, Max Muncy and Lawrence Butler hit homers, and the Athletics beat struggling Kansas City 4-0 on Saturday.

Lopez (1-4) walked one and struck out nine while winning for the second time in his big league career. His other victory came on Oct. 1, 2023, when Lopez allowed five runs while pitching for the Rays in a game against Toronto.

He was recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas last month and had been 0-3 with a 6.88 ERA in three games since.

Michael Kelly pitched two perfect innings in relief and Hogan Harris finished off the four-hitter for the A's.

Muncy followed a leadoff walk by Tyler Soderstrom in the second inning with his fifth homer of the year, a line-drive into the A's bullpen off Kansas City starter Michael Lorenzen. Lawrence homered off reliever Daniel Lynch IV in the seventh.

Lorenzen (4-7) allowed three runs on four hits and four walks over six innings. He struck out four.

The Royals have lost the first five games on their homestand after getting swept by the Yankees earlier in the week, then losing the first two against the A's. They've lost seven of their last eight overall and 13 of their last 16 at Kauffman Stadium.

Meanwhile, the A's have finally found some kind of stride. They'd lost 13 of their last 16 games on their way to Kansas City, and were coming off a three-game sweep by the Angels in which they allowed 15 runs.

Muncy homered off an 85 mph slider from Lorenzen to give the A's all the offense they needed.

ORLANDO, Fla. - Fort Hays State Sports Information Director Ryan Prickett received more national recognition from College Sports Communicators (CSC) in 2024-25, receiving three Citations of Excellence from the organization in its recent release of yearly Creative and Digital Design Awards. His most recent accolades are for poster design and game notes. After just completing his 20th year as SID at Fort Hays State, Prickett now has a total of 22 Citations of Excellence in his career from CSC for publications, design, and photography.

Prickett designed the 2025 Fort Hays State Football poster, which was honored among the Top 20 poster designs in the College Division nationally. Additionally, he was among the Top 15 of the College Division for his men's basketball game notes, a publication he produces for media and public use before every FHSU basketball game.

His football poster received a "Best of Division II" distinction for 2024-25. The "Best Of" distinctions for the different levels within the College Division, which includes NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, and NAIA, began in 2023-24. Prickett now has two of these honors after he was named among the Best of Division II for his photography work in 2023-24.

In 2022-23, Prickett was named the CSC Photographer of the Year nationally for the College Division, the first year the organization bestowed an award for the photography and graphic design work of its membership. four runs as the Hays Larks opened up a seven-game homestand with a convincing
15-0 win over the Denver Cougars. The Larks had a 3-0 lead after four inning
then blew the game open with a pair of six run innings in the fifth and sixth.
The game was called after seven by run rule.

Dalton Campbell (2-0) allowed two hits with seven strikeouts
and two walks over the first five innings and picked up the win. Jordan
Stribling followed with two scoreless innings of relief with four strikeouts
and three walks.

The Larks (5-1-1, 3-1 RMBL) grabbed the lead on Brady Kreutzer’s
RBI double in the bottom of the second. They tacked on two more runs in the
third on CJ Reid’s double to right field. The lead grew to 4-0 on an L Reid’s
RBI double in the fifth. Following back-to-back walks to Paul Smith and Ried, Kreutzer
cleared the bases with a three-run double down the left field line to push the
lead to 8-0. Trent Baker capped the inning with a single which scored Kreutzer.

After a walk and back-to-back hit batters loaded the bases
in the sixth, Reid grounded into fielder’s choice which scored a run. Another
hit batter loaded the bases then Lane Sparks singled to right which scored two
and made the score 12-0. Baker would cap the scoring a batter later with a three-run
homer. 

The Larks took advantage of 11 walks and three hit batters. Four
of their 15 hits were doubles including two by Kreutzer. Campbell and Stribling

Nick Loftin had a two-run triple in a three-run ninth as the Athletics held on for their fifth victory in their last 29 games.

Wacha gave up five runs on nine hits in 5 1/3 innings. Taylor Clarke pitched two scoreless innings after Cruz got two outs.

Muncy's two-out, two-run single in the sixth following the bases-loaded walk to Soderstrom proved to be the difference.

The Athletics began the day with the worst ERA in the AL at 5.63 while allowing the most home runs — 104.

Mark Leiter Jr. (4-3) got one out for the win, and Devin Williams earned his ninth save with a perfect ninth. He threw a called third strike past Jac Caglianone to end it, freezing the touted rookie with a full-count fastball.

The game was interrupted by rain for 28 minutes in the top of the sixth.

With two on and two outs in the eighth, Paul Goldschmidt lined a single off the glove of leaping first baseman Vinnie Pasquantino. He tracked down the ball behind him and threw to Erceg (1-2) covering first, but Goldschmidt beat the play.

Reyes lost his balance coming around third, changed direction twice and then slid home safely when Erceg bounced his throw to the plate.

Both starters pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings. Seth Lugo allowed just two hits, while Warren permitted four.

Pasquantino extended his hitting streak to a career-high 12 games and his on-base streak to a career-best 27 games.

the top of the 10th inning, lifting the Hays Larks to a 5-4 win over
the Dodge City A’s Wednesday in Dodge City. 

Jackson Babcock led off the 10th inning with his
fourth hit of the game, and on the next pitch, LaRue drove him home, putting
Hays up 5-4.

Hays’ Julio Ramos turned in four perfect innings of relief

⚾10th inning run lifts Larks past A’s

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Aaron Judge homered for the third consecutive game, Clarke Schmidt allowed just two hits over six innings, and the New York Yankees cruised to a 6-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday night.

Paul Goldschmidt added a pair of RBIs during a five-run second inning for New York, which improved to 5-0 against the Royals this season. The Yankees are are 12-3 against them since the start of last season, including their playoff series win.

Salvador Perez hit a two-run homer during a three-run ninth for Kansas City.

Schmidt (3-3) allowed one runner to reach second base, and that was courtesy of his own balk that advanced Maikel Garcia in the first inning. He also struck out seven to remain unbeaten in six regular-season appearances against the Royals. Devin Williams got the final two outs for his eighth save.

Kris Bubic (5-4) looked like he might be in for a duel with Schmidt after a perfect first inning. But he proceeded to allow five runs on four hits and two walks during the second, and ultimately six hits and four walks in just 4 1/3 innings.

Judge's homer off Steven Cruz came on the heels of a two-homer game Sunday against Boston and a 469-foot shot in the series opener against Kansas City on Tuesday night. The two-time MVP has eight RBIs over the three-game span.

Until Perez's homer, the biggest highlight for the Royals came in the fifth inning, when the Yankees loaded the bases with one out. DJ LeMahieu hit a sharp grounder to third base, where Garcia fielded it while falling to his rump. He threw to second from his back side, and a relay by Jonathan India to first base resulted in an inning-ending double play.

Jazz Chisholm, who later left the game with left groin tightness, drew a walk in the second inning after plate umpire Lance Barrett called what would have been the third strike a questionable ball. The Yankees capitalized on their fortunes, sending 10 batters to the plate in what became the decisive inning.

The Royals (34-34) are 10-18 after going on a 16-2 run in April and May.

Yankees RHP Will Warren (4-3, 5.34) starts the series finale Thursday night. RHP Seth Lugo (3-5, 3.46) goes for Kansas City.

game, in the bottom of the ninth inning and finished in a 5-5 tie with the
Kansas Cannons in a non-league contest Tuesday night at Larks Park. 

The Larks out-hit the Cannons 12-9, and all but one Lark in
the lineup had at least one hit. But they loaded the bases in the bottom of the
ninth inning with no outs, but they failed to produce, resulting in the tie
game.

Brady Kreutzer homered and collected a pair of hits in his
Larks debut. Jackson Babcock walked and drove in a pair of runs. 

Larks’ starter Keevyn Goss allowed just one run, on two
hits, with seven strikeouts in four innings. But got the no decision.

(AP) — Austin Wells hit a three-run homer and finished with five RBIs, Aaron Judge hit&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/new-york-yankees-kansas-city-royals-2ea322cc91d74f45eb79b63a232dc463">the third-longest homer</a>&nbsp;in the majors this season, and the New York Yankees routed the Kansas City Royals 10-2 on Tuesday night.

Max Fried (9-1) bounced back from his first loss of the season, pitching seven innings of two-run ball for New York.

Wells homered on a full-count pitch from Noah Cameron (2-2) with two outs in the fourth inning, then added a two-run double in the sixth after a 10-pitch duel with Taylor Clarke. He matched his career high for RBIs in a game.

Judge's two-run homer in the first had an exit velocity of 117.9 mph and traveled 469 feet, landing on the roof of the Royals Hall of Fame in left field. Only the Angels' Mike Trout and Logan O'Hoppe have hit longer home runs this season.

Judge added a bloop RBI single in the sixth inning, when the Yankees put the game away with five more runs off the Kansas City bullpen. Cody Bellinger drove in one of them with the 1,000th hit of his career.

Cameron wound up allowing six runs and seven hits over 5 2/3 innings. It was the first time in the left-hander's first six big league starts that he allowed more than one run or failed to make it through six innings.

Jac Caglianone singled and had an RBI groundout in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-city-royals-jac-caglianone-b91fc63d53d5aa12ec0283b72e8f7f14">his home debut</a>&nbsp;for Kansas City.
