KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Morgan Schmidt, senior pitcher, was named the MIAA Softball Pitcher of the Week on Monday for her performance in a complete-game win over Southern Arkansas last week. She joined Kate Ediger of Washburn (MIAA Player of the Week) as the weekly honorees for softball from the conference office.

Schmidt picked up a complete-game win in her only start last week, helping the Tigers knock off Southern Arkansas, an NCAA Tournament team from last season. Schmidt had a season-high nine strikeouts and is now averaging over a strikeout per inning for the season (23 in 21.0 innings of work). She limited the Muleriders to just four hits and a two-run homer was all the scoring she surrendered. It was Schmidt's third-straight complete game to open the season and she maintained her 2.00 ERA for the season.

Ediger hit .667 for the week (4-for-6) while helping Washburn to a pair of wins over Arkansas Tech and Oklahoma Baptist. She had two home runs and six RBIs in the win over Arkansas Tech, just one RBI shy of the Washburn single-game record. She is tied for first in the MIAA with four home runs on the year.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Katie DeGarmo&nbsp;received the honor on Monday for her performance in a pair of road wins last week. DeGarmo averaged a double-double in points and rebounds for the week, while also adding 5.0 assists per game.

DeGarmo put up a pair of double-doubles for FHSU, helping the Tigers stretch their winning streak to nine games by averaging 14.5 points, 12.0 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 1.5 steals per game. The graduate student opened the week with 13 points, as well as a season-high 14 rebounds and six assists in a win at Emporia State before notching 16 points, 10 rebounds and four assists in a victory against Newman.

MORGANTOWN, W. Va.&nbsp;- Following a stellar week of play, K-State guard Taryn Sides collected her first career Big 12 Player of the Week honor in an announcement on Monday.

The sophomore from Phillipsburg, Kansas, came off the bench in both games to register 19.0 points on a .571 field goal percentage including a .588 three-point percentage, 8.0 rebounds, 5.0 assists, 2.5 steals and 1.0 blocks.

At Cincinnati on Wednesday, Sides carded her first career double-double with 17 points including a 4-of-10 effort from distance, a career-high 12 rebounds, four assists and a steal in 27 minutes of action.

Against UCF on Saturday, Sides registered her second 20-point game of the season with 21 points on 7-of-8 shooting, including 6-of-7 from 3-point range, six assists, four rebounds, tied her career-high with four steals and set a career-high with two blocks in 28 minutes off the bench.

For the season, the 2025 Big 12 Sixth Player of the Year candidate is averaging a career-high 10.2 points on a career-best .484 field goal percentage and a career-best .469 effort from long range. Her three-point percentage ranks second in school history for a season.

SURPRISE, Ariz.-The Kansas City Royals Monday morning announced that Executive Vice President and General Manager&nbsp;J.J. Picollo&nbsp;has agreed to a contract extension, which will run through the 2030 season with a club option for 2031. Additionally, the Royals have exercised Manager&nbsp;Matt Quatraro’s&nbsp;club option for the 2026 season.

“J.J. is one of the top executives in baseball, and I am proud that he’s leading our pursuit of a championship,” said Royals Chairman and CEO&nbsp;John Sherman. “His ability to lead and connect with people, his intellectual curiosity, and his innovative methods of combining the best of traditional scouting and player development with advanced sciences and technologies are driving us toward that ultimate goal.”

Picollo is in his 19th full season with the Royals and his third full season in his current position. He was named the seventh General Manager in franchise history on Sept. 12, 2021&nbsp;and was elevated to his current role a year later. The Royals have hired more than 30 new people in Baseball Operations since he was named Executive Vice President of Baseball Operations in September 2022.

The Royals spent $110M on free agents during the 2023-24 offseason, which was the most among American League teams. That number does not include the extension of&nbsp;Bobby Witt Jr., who in February 2024 signed the biggest contract in franchise history, a 14-year agreement that includes 11 years guaranteed.

Those offseason efforts led the Royals to an 86-76 record in 2024, resulting in a postseason berth and a 30-win improvement from the previous season. They were just the sixth team in the 162-game Era (since 1961) to have a 30-win improvement from one season to the next (excluding shortened seasons). Kansas City’s turnaround led to Picollo finishing as the runner-up in the 2024 Executive of the Year voting.

Since Picollo’s&nbsp;arrival in 2006, the Royals have had 36 different players, coaches or trainers be selected to the All-Star Game, combining for a total of 59 All-Star selections. Of the 21 All-Star players among that group, 11 were originally drafted or signed by the Royals. During the same time, the Royals have produced nine different players who have earned a&nbsp;Rawlings&nbsp;Gold Glove Award, and that group has combined for 23 Gold Gloves. During Picollo’s&nbsp;tenure, the Royals have also had five different players combine for nine Louisville Slugger Silver Slugger Awards.

PROVO, Utah (AP) — Richie Saunders scored 17 points and grabbed 14 rebounds on Saturday night to help BYU beat Kansas State 80-65 and snap the Wildcats' six-game win streak.

Dallin Hall scored 16 points and Fousseyni Traore 11 for BYU (17-8, 8-6 Big 12). Keba Keita added nine points, 11 rebounds and five blocks.

Egor Demin threw down a dunk that gave BYU the lead for good less than five minutes into the game and sparked a 17-4 run that made it 26-12 about four minutes later. The Cougars led by at least eight point the rest of the way.

CJ Jones made layup for the Wildcats with 7:43 left in the first and half and neither team scored again until Hall's layup with 2:56 to go until halftime that gave BYU a 14-point lead.

Kansas State, which made four of its first 16 shots and at one point missed 10 consecutive field-goal attempts, shot 27% (9 of 33) in the first half.

Dug McDaniel led Kansas State (13-12, 7-7) with 22 points on 9-of-16 shooting, 3 of 7 from 3-point range. Brendan Hausen added 12 points, including three 3s.

TOPEKA - The Hays High girls finished runner-up at the 5A West Girls' Regional held at Topeka Seaman High School on Saturday. Kapaun Mt. Carmel took the team title with 218.5 points. Hays finished with 180.5.

The Indians qualified a program record ten individuals to the state tournament. Timber Lovewell, Lexi Barnett and Eleanor Stoffel all claimed regional championships.

Emersyn Copper (24-14) finished in fourth place at 100 pounds. 

Kenlee Vehige (22-11) lost her semifinal match but bounced back for a third place finish with a 15-8 decision at 120 pounds.

Reese Vehige (15-9) qualified at 125 pounds with a sixth place finish. 

Addison Nueberger (15-17) lost in the quarterfinals and battle back for a sixth place finish as well at 130 pounds.

Tionna Napue (17-5) placed third at 135 pounds. Napue along with several of the Indians have battled injuries during the year. Napue won four matches on the day, all by fall.

Ava Ruiz (22-7) placed 4th at 140 pounds. Ruiz made the championship semifinals before suffering her first loss on the day.

Timber Lovewell (27-7) made the championship match at 145 pounds with a pair of falls in the first two rounds. She then pinned her final opponent in 1:16 to win the regional crown.

Lexi Barnett (14-1) has also battled injury most of the season. She made the championship match at 155 pounds. Like Lovewell two matches before her, Barnett pinned her opponent in the finals.

Freshman Elanor Stoffel (23-7) pinned her way to the championship round. Her championship match was more dramatic. Stoffel won in a tie breaker 3-2.

Jenessa Carrillo (6-14) punched her her ticket to state with an eighth place finish at 235.&nbsp;

The 5A State tournament is held in Park City on February 28th and March 1st.

WICHITA, Kan. – Fort Hays State put an end to its four-game slide in road games on Saturday with a 76-68 win at Fugate Gymnasium. Kaleb Hammeke&nbsp;led the Tigers to victory with a season-high 32-point performance. The Tigers improved to 16-8 overall and 9-6 in the MIAA, while the Jets moved to 13-12 overall and 6-10 in the MIAA.

Hammeke scored 10 of Fort Hays State's first 12 points of the game. He had 12 points by halftime and then dropped 20 in the second half. It was his fifth game of 30 or more points and first since scoring 35 at Missouri Southern on February 18, 2023 and four off his career high.

The first half was a back-and-forth battle with neither team leading by more than five points. The scoring pace was up tempo early as the teams played to an 18-18 tie over the first 7:30 of action. However, the Tigers were able to slow the game down into their typical pace of play and only 16 points were scored between the teams the rest of the half. Newman held a 27-25 lead at the break.

The Tigers scored the first nine points of the second half to take a 34-27 lead. FHSU held onto its lead the remainder of the game, but had to fight off several bursts by Newman. The Jets cut the lead to three twice before an 8-1 run by the Tigers pushed the lead to 10. The Jets chipped it back to five twice before the Tigers pushed it to 10 again with 7:08 to play. The Jets immediately answered with a pair of 3-point field goals, getting the margin down to four, but Kaleb Hammeke&nbsp;had the answer to get it back to nine after splashing a pair of 3-point field goals from the right wing. He then made a pair of free throws to get the lead to 11, FHSU's largest, with 2:52 to play. Six points was all the closer Newman could get the rest of the way.

Hammeke&nbsp;finished 11-of-18 from the field and a perfect 8-of-8 at the free-throw line, playing all 40 minutes of the game. He also dished out a team-high five assists. Dan Makuna&nbsp;matched his career-high in points with 16 off the bench, going 7-of-11 from the field. Traejon Davis&nbsp;finished with nine points and Lucas Hammeke&nbsp;added eight off the bench. FHSU shot 47.4 percent from the field as a team and held Newman to 38.6 percent.

Aaron Murphy led Newman with 21 points, while Thatcher McClure had 11 and Jayden Schoen had 10.Fort Hays State will now play three-straight games at home with only four games remaining in the regular season overall. 

The Tigers play host to Missouri Southern on Thursday and then Pittsburg State on Saturday.&nbsp;&nbsp;

PITTSBURG, Kan. - The Fort Hays State track and field team concluded competition at the 10th Annual Russ Jewett Indoor Gorilla Classic on Saturday, delivering several standout performances, including multiple NCAA Division II provisional marks.

The Tigers excelled in the pole vault invite, with&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-track-and-field/roster/jacob-clark/8482">Jacob Clark</a>&nbsp;clearing 16-8.00 to secure first place and earn an NCAA DII provisional mark.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-track-and-field/roster/brady-deges/8485">Brady Deges</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-track-and-field/roster/josiah-ball/8526">Josiah Ball</a>&nbsp;tied for third place, each clearing 15-8.25, also achieving the provisional standard.

Fort Hays State will return to action next weekend as they continue preparations for the MIAA Championships, set for Feb. 28-Mar. 2. With multiple top performances and provisional marks secured at the Gorilla Classic, the Tigers aim to build momentum heading into the Loper Tune-Up on Feb. 21.

🏃‍♂️ Tigers conclude day two at Gorilla Classic

RUSSELL - Norton edged out Oakley by three points in the 3-2-1A Girls West Regional. The two-day tournament was hosted by Russell.

The top eight placers will wrestle in Hays at the State Tournament February 28th and March 1st.

Norton qualified nine wrestlers on their way to the team championship. Kaison Miller who is ranked number one in all classes and hasn't lost to a Kansas opponent was champion at 115 pounds. She pinned all four of her opponents. Halle Pfannenstiel, who has just two losses on the season, won 140 pounds. Cadence Greeson won 190 pounds. Like Miller and Pfannenstiel she has just two losses.

Hays PostRUSSELL - Norton edged out Oakley by three points in the 3-2-1A Girls West Regional. The two-day tournament was hosted by Russell.The top eight placers will wrestle in Hays at the State Tournament February 28th and March 1st.Norton qualified nine wrestlers on their way to the team championship. Kaison Miller who is ranked number one in all classes and hasn't lost to a Kansas opponent was champion at 115 pounds. She pinned all four of her opponents. Halle Pfannenstiel, who has just two losses on the season, won 140 pounds. Cadence Greeson won 190 pounds. WICHITA, Kan. - The seventh-ranked Fort Hays State women's basketball team used a dominant second half to pull away from Newman on Saturday, winning 77-36 at Fugate Gymnasium. The Tigers improve to 22-2 on the year and 13-2 in MIAA with the win while the Jets are now 7-18 overall and 2-14 in league action.

After shooting just 32.4 percent from the floor in the first half (12-of-37), the Tigers knocked down 60-percent from the floor after the intermission (18-of-30) to cruise to the win.

The Tigers dominated from the jump, scoring the first 13 points while holding the Jets scoreless for more than five minutes. Katie DeGarmo&nbsp;scored the first six points for FHSU before Olivia Hollenbeck&nbsp;scored the next seven.

After missing their first five shots and turning the ball over four times, the Jets finally broke through by scoring six in a row to pull within 13-6. Talexa Weeter&nbsp;ended the run with a 3-pointer, giving the Tigers a 16-6 lead at the end of the first quarter. The sophomore proceeded to score five points in the first 76 seconds of the second quarter, going on an 8-0 run herself to push the lead to 21-6.

The teams traded baskets for the rest of the quarter, with FHSU leading 28-15 at halftime. The Tigers then matched that point total in the third quarter, outscoring the Jets 28-13 to push the lead to 56-28. FHSU pulled away thanks to a 20-3 run midway through the frame where the Tigers hit 8-of-12 from the floor while holding the Jets to 1-of-5 shooting and creating four turnovers.

Fort Hays State continued to pour it on in the fourth quarter, outscoring the home team 21-8 to push the lead as high as 41 points.

Newman's point total was its lowest of the season. The Tigers finished the game shooting 44.8 percent (30-of-67) while holding the Jets to 26.8 percent shooting (15-of-56). FHSU outrebounded the Jets by 15, including 14 offensive rebounds. The Tigers scored a season-high 23 second-chance points off those offensive rebounds. FHSU also scored 25 points off 17 Newman turnovers and scored 14 points in transition.

Weeter led all scorers with 17 points in less than 20 minutes of action, while DeGarmo totaled 16 points and 10 rebounds for her second-straight double-double. Hollenbeck racked up 15 points, while Kate Dilsaver&nbsp;accumulated eight points, eight rebounds, four assists, four steals and one block.

The Tigers will play their next three games at home beginning Thursday (Feb. 20) when FHSU hosts Missouri Southern beginning at 5:30 p.m.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Fort Hays State returns to action on Saturday at Newman University in its second-to-last road contest of the regular season. The Tigers are looking to snap a recent string of losses in road contests, which reached four games on Thursday night at Emporia State. The Tigers enter at 15-8 overall and 8-6 in the MIAA, while the Jets are 13-11 overall and 6-9 in the MIAA.

Fort Hays State is coming off a 58-44 loss to Emporia State on Thursday evening in Emporia. The Tigers lead the nation in scoring defense and held the Hornets to right at their season average (58.6) of points surrendered per game, but struggled offensively and saw the Hornets coast to a victory in the second half.

Newman enters Saturday on a three-game losing skid overall. The Jets fell to Nebraska-Kearney at home on Wednesday evening by a score of 79-66 and prior to that took road losses to Missouri Southern and Pittsburg State. The Jets are 9-4 at home so far this season and Saturday will be their second-to-last home contest in the regular season.

The seventh-ranked Fort Hays State women's basketball team wraps up an in-state road trip Saturday when the Tigers take on the Newman Jets in Wichita. First tip is slated for 1:30 p.m. inside Fugate Gymnasium.

Fort Hays State picked up its eighth-straight win on Thursday, defeating Emporia State 70-52 to move to 21-2 on the year and 12-2 in MIAA action. This is the 14th season in a row that the Tigers have reached 20 wins, the longest active streak in Division II and tied for fifth-longest across all NCAA divisions.

Now with 1,797 career points, Olivia Hollenbeck&nbsp;climbed into fourth on the all-time scoring list at FHSU on Thursday. The Tigers currently have two of the four best scorers in program history on the roster, with Katie DeGarmo&nbsp;second with 2,102 points in her career.

Brooke Loewe&nbsp;dished out six more assists in the win over the Lady Hornets, giving the junior 159 assists on the season. That total is second-most in a single season in program history and is just seven away from tying the school record of 166 assists in a season (Kristi Leeper-Meis, 1990-91). Loewe ranks second in DII in total assists and is fourth in the country with an average of 7.2 assists per game.

The Tigers added another double-digit win on Thursday, FHSU's 19th win by 10 or more points this season. Eleven of those wins have been by 20 or more points, helping the Tigers to a scoring margin of plus-18.6 which ranks ninth in Division II.FHSU also ranks second in the country in assist/turnover ratio (1.40), third in assists per game (19.0), ninth in field goal percentage (46.0) and ninth in winning percentage (.913).

Bailey Wilborn&nbsp;knocked down a trio of 3-pointers in Thursday's win in Emporia, doing so for a team-best third time this season. The senior transfer has hit seven of her last 15 attempts from behind the arc over the last five games (46.7 percent).

Kate Dilsaver&nbsp;scored in double figures for the 13th time this season against the Lady Hornets. She is averaging 9.3 points per night as a senior after putting up an average of 4.1 points per contest in her first three seasons as a Tiger.

Fort Hays State is 26-1 all-time against Newman, including wins in each of the last 16 meetings. That is FHSU's longest active winning streak against a current MIAA rival. The Tigers are 10-1 against the Jets in Wichita. FHSU is 2-0 against Newman under head coach Talia Kahrs, including a 1-0 record on the road. The Tigers are 10-0 against the Jets in MIAA regular season matchups.

Newman is 7-17 this season, including a 5-7 mark at home this season. The Jets lead the conference with an average of 4.4 blocks per night, 20th-most in Division II, however they are last in the MIAA in both scoring (57.4 ppg) and scoring margin (-10.4). Delainey Wylie is second in the league with an average of 2.00 blocks per game, ranking 21st in the nation. Jaeden McMillin leads the team in both scoring (12.4 ppg) and rebounding (6.6 rpg). The Tigers currently have two of the four best scorers in program history on the roster, with Katie DeGarmo&nbsp;second with 2,102 points in her career.Brooke Loewe&nbsp;dished out six more assists in the win over the Lady Hornets, giving the junior 159 assists on the season. She is averaging 9.3 points per night as a senior after putting up an average of 4.1 points per contest in her first three seasons as a Tiger.Fort Hays State is 26-1 all-time against Newman, including wins in each of the last 16 meetings. That is FHSU's longest active winning streak against a current MIAA rival. The Tigers are 10-1 against the Jets in Wichita. FHSU is 2-0 against Newman under head coach Talia Kahrs, including a 1-0 record on the road. The Tigers are 10-0 against the Jets in MIAA regular season matchups.Newman is 7-17 this season, including a 5-7 mark at home this season. The Jets lead the conference with an average of 4.4 blocks per night, 20th-most in Division II, however they are last in the MIAA in both scoring (57.4 ppg) and scoring margin (-10.4). Delainey Wylie is second in the league with an average of 2.00 blocks per game, ranking 21st in the nation. Jaeden McMillin leads the team in both scoring (12.4 ppg) and rebounding (6.6 rpg). PHILLIPSBURG – The TMP-Marian Monarchs traveled to
Phillipsburg Friday night for their final road games of the regular season, and
the Lady Panthers were too much for the Lady Monarchs. At the same time, the
TMP boys rallied in the second half on their way to a double-digit victory.

Phillipsburg took a 3-0 lead on a Karrissa Keeten three-pointer
before TMP’s Brooke Koenigsman converted a three-point play, tying the game at
three with just over five minutes remaining in the first.

Phillipsburg wasted no time taking control of the game,
ending the first half with a 16-4 run that put the Panthers up 19-7.

A 13-2 second-quarter run gave Phillipsburg a 34-10 lead
before the Monarchs (11-8, 4-3) closed the deficit to 34-14 at halftime.

Phillipsburg led by as much as 27 midway through the third
quarter before the Monarchs put together a 13-0 run to pull within 14 points at
the end of the third quarter. But that was as close as they would get in a 57-37
loss.

Brooke Koenigsman led the Monarchs with 15 points and seven
rebounds.

The TMP-M boys outscored Phillipsburg 15-4 in the fourth
quarter, earning their 12th straight win over Phillipsburg 53-43.

The Monarchs (10-9, 6-2 MCL) raced out to an early 16-10
lead as Grant Nehls scored seven of his 15 points. 

But their lead was short-lived; Phillipsburg answered with a
20-7 run, building their largest lead of the game at 30-23.

Ian Nehls cut the deficit to five at 30-25 at halftime.

Trailing again by seven, Ty Schmeidler completed a
three-point play, sparking a 13-9 run that pulled TMP within one through three
quarters.

Trailing 39-38 to open the final frame, TMP’s Will Eck hit a
runner with just under seven minutes left in the game, putting TMP up 40-39,
and they never trailed again. 

TMP held Phillipsburg to just four points in the fourth
quarter while scoring 15 points to secure the 53-43 victory.

Jacob Seib led TMP with 16 points and Grant Nehls added 15
points. Ian Nehls pulled down a game-high eight rebounds.
