GARDEN CITY - The Hays High baseball team split their Western Athletic Conference in Garden City Friday winning game one 8-1 before dropping the nightcap 6-1. The Indians are now 2-6 overall and 2-2 in WAC play.
The Indians play a doubleheader at Dodge City on Tuesday.
Hays 8, Garden City 1
The Indians scored five in the second to build an early 6-0 lead then held off the Buffaloes the rest of the way. Paxton Shaw and Brett Rhoades both had RBI doubles with Jarek Purdy adding an RBI single.
Brett Rhoades had three hits and four RBIs. Rhoades singled in the first inning, doubled in the second and singled in the fourth. He also picked up the win, allowing an unearned run on one hit over five innings with three strike outs and walk.
Beau Dreiling tossed two innings of scoreless relief to close out the game.
Garden City 6, Hays 1
Garden City hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the first and never trailed. The Indians lone run came in the fifth on a Beau Dreiling single.
Cade Jennings took the loss for Hays. The right-hander gave up four runs (three earned) on two hits with three strikeouts and three walks.
Dreiling had two of the Indians three hits.
