HAYS, Kan. - The seventh-ranked Fort Hays State women's basketball team won its 10th consecutive game Thursday evening, defeating Missouri Southern 64-55 at Gross Memorial Coliseum. The Tigers (23-2, 14-2 MIAA) never trailed in the contest while holding the Lions (16-12, 8-8 MIAA) to a shooting percentage of 31.3 percent, their second-worst shooting game of the season.

Fort Hays State also started the season with a 12-game winning streak, making this just the third time in program history that the team has reeled off multiple double-digit winning streaks.

Brooke Loewe&nbsp;finished the game with three assists, giving her 166 for the season to tie the program record that has been in place for 34 years (Kristi Leeper-Meis, 1990-91).

Olivia Hollenbeck won the tip and got the ball to Katie DeGarmo&nbsp;who drove straight to the basket and scored six seconds into the contest. That basket was the first of a dozen for the graduate student who led the way with a season-high 27 points and 15 rebounds to record her third double-double in a row and the 44th of her career.

Both sides cooled off from there, combining for just eight points in the first seven minutes of action. Fort Hays State bounced back down the stretch, shooting 5-of-8 from the floor to finish the quarter with a 16-9 lead.

Kate Dilsaver&nbsp;opened the second quarter with a basket to put the Tigers up nine before the Lions started to claw back, eventually closing within two late in the frame. FHSU bounced back to score the final four points of the half to go into the break up 28-22.Fort Hays State continued to pull away early in the second half, using an 11-4 run to push the lead as high as 13. The Lions answered with another rally, trimming the deficit to six with a banked in 3-pointer just before the end of period horn, 51-45.The Tiger defense helped FHSU hold on down the stretch, limiting the Lions to just 4-of-17 shooting in the final frame (23.5 percent) while forcing three turnovers and blocking one shot.

DeGarmo scored 17 of her 27 points after halftime while adding two steals and one block. Talexa Weeter&nbsp;contributed 11 points and eight rebounds, while Dilsaver totaled 10 points, eight rebounds and two steals.

The Tigers dominated in the paint, outscoring the Lions 44-24. Both teams collected 39 rebounds while Fort Hays State hit 46.3 percent from the floor (25-of-54).

Fort Hays State will return to action on Saturday (Feb. 22) when the Tigers host fifth-ranked Pittsburg State in a top 10 battle. First tip in the Senior Day matchup is set for 2 p.m.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Fort Hays State opens its final regular homestand of the season on Thursday when it plays host to Missouri Southern. It will be the first of three-straight home games over seven days for FHSU. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at Gross Memorial Coliseum. The Tigers enter at 16-8 overall and 9-6 in the MIAA, while the Lions are 11-13 overall and 6-9 in the MIAA.

Fort Hays State put an end to a four-game skid in road games this past Saturday by defeating Newman University in Wichita by a score of 76-68 this past Saturday. Kaleb Hammeke scored a season-high 32 points in the win, his first game of 30 or more points since the 2022-23 season. In the process, he upped his career scoring total to 1,926 points. It was the only meeting of the regular season between FHSU and Newman.

Missouri Southern has split its last four games played. Most recently the Lions fell at Missouri Western last Saturday by 12 points. Two of Missouri Southern's three wins in conference road games this season have been by two points or less, which includes a 69-67 win at Northwest Missouri State last week.

Fort Hays State has won the last three meetings with Missouri Southern going back to the 2022-23 season. FHSU swept the regular season series last year with an 18-point win in Joplin and then a tight two-point win in overtime in Hays. The Lions won the 2022-23 meeting between the teams in Hays. FHSU has won seven of the last nine meetings overall.

With his 32-point performance at Newman, Hammeke upped his team-leading scoring average to 15.3 points per game. He also adds 4.1 assists per game. Kyle Grill&nbsp;is the only other Tiger averaging double figures in scoring at 11.7 points per game. Shaun Riley&nbsp;leads the team in rebounding at 6.5 per game and is just shy of double figures in scoring at 9.6 points per game.

Fort Hays State continues to lead NCAA Division II in scoring defense at 59.0 points per game. The Tigers rank fourth nationally in fewest turnovers per game (9.3) and they rank eighth in opponent field goal percentage (.394).

Martin Macenis leads the Lions in scoring at 14.8 points per game, followed by Jaden Taylor (13.3) and Tyrique Brooks (12.2). The Lions average 78.3 points per game and have been held inside of 65 points just twice this season.

Hollenbeck ranks fourth in points with 1,812, second in blocks with 212, t-9th in steals with 188 and fourth in field goals with 685.

Ellie Stearns&nbsp;has hit a 3-pointer in each of the last four games, the longest active streak on the team.

INDIANAPOLIS - The seventh-ranked Fort Hays State women's basketball team is one of 10 teams currently under consideration for selection into the 2025 NCAA Division II Central Region Championships, announced Wednesday by the NCAA office.

In recent years the NCAA has released its first set of region rankings in alphabetical order before announcing the teams in rank order in two subsequent releases. Final selections for the field of eight teams will be announced on Sunday, March 9. The regional tournament will run March 14-17 at the top overall seed with the regional champion moving on to Pittsburgh, Pa. March 24-28 for the DII Elite Eight.

The Tigers are one of four MIAA programs in the region's top 10, joined by four school representing the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference and two institutions from the Great American Conference.

While the Tigers are 22-2 on the year, one win came against an NAIA opponent, giving FHSU an overall DII record of 21-2. All but one of those DII matchups are considered in-region opponents, giving the Tigers an in-region record of 20-2.

Fort Hays State has played in eight of the last 10 regional championship tournaments, serving as the top overall seed four times and playing in three regional finals.

Two of the statistical metrics that the regional selection committee takes into consideration are KPI and in-region RPI. Fort Hays State currently has the third-best KPI in the region of .242 while the Tigers are sixth in in-region RPI at .590.

The Tigers will have a chance to boost those metrics in the final two weeks of the regular season with three games against teams also listed as under consideration, including one matchup with Pittsburg State and two games against Nebraska-Kearney.

The Tigers open a three-game homestand Thursday (Feb. 20) against Missouri Southern beginning at 5:30 p.m.

TOPEKA - The Kansas State High School Activities Association has released seedings and brackets for the upcoming 1A sub-state basketball tournaments.

Girls quarterfinal games will be on Monday, February 24 at the higher seed. Boys quarterfinal games will be played on Tuesday, February 25 at the higher seeded team. Girls semifinal games will be played on Saturday, March 1 at the higher seed. Game times for games on Saturday, March 1 is 7 p.m. Boys semifinal games will be played on Monday, March 3 at the higher seed. Now 22-2 on the season, the Tigers have been ranked seventh in the coaches rankings five times this season. FHSU racked up 438 points in the balloting process, up from 432 one week ago.

Fort Hays State is one of two MIAA programs in the top 10 this week, with Pittsburg State occupying the number five spot in both national polls. The Tigers and Gorillas will battle for the only time during the regular season on Saturday (Feb. 22) beginning at 2 p.m. inside Gross Memorial Coliseum.

The Tigers have now been ranked seventh in the coaches poll 11 times in the DII era, going 16-1 when ranked in that position. The Tigers are 179-45 all-time when ranked, including a 126-26 mark when ranked inside the top 10. FHSU has now been in the top 25 in 117 separate releases of the poll, including 77 appearances inside the top 10.

Fort Hays State is one of five Central Region programs listed in each poll, with the Tigers and Gorillas joined by a trio of NSIC programs in Concordia-St. Paul, Southwest Minnesota State and Minnesota State-Mankato. The Tigers are in a good position to be listed in the regional rankings, which will released for the first time this season later this afternoon.

Winners of nine in a row, Fort Hays State will play its next three games at home beginning Thursday (Feb. 20) when the Tigers host Missouri Southern at 5:30 p.m.

PROVO, Utah (AP) — Kansas has reached a low point with its uncharacteristic struggles in Big 12 play.

The No. 23 Jayhawks&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-byu-basketball-score-5a3cb1b0ef31ad1964470cda758f49c5">lost 91-57 to BYU</a>&nbsp;on Tuesday night, matching their largest margin of defeat in Bill Self’s tenure, after previously losing 85-51 to USC in the second round of the 2021 NCAA Tournament. It also marked the first time Kansas — the preseason No. 1 in the AP Top 25 poll — lost by 30-plus points against an unranked team since the poll began in 1948.

The Jayhawks have not led through their last 80 minutes of basketball after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-utah-basketball-score-2920c07f0583abda508becce4bb8fea0">also falling to Utah 74-67</a>&nbsp;on Saturday. They have lost four of six games since the start of February.

“Obviously we’re going to catch a lot of flak, whether it’s fans or national media, and rightfully so because we just lost by damn near 40,” said senior center Hunter Dickinson, who finished with 12 points and 14 rebounds. “Nobody is going to feel bad for us now that NIL is the thing, and players are getting paid and everything like that. Nobody is going to feel bad for you. They’re going to expect you to perform like a paid player.”

Kansas never came close to threatening the Cougars at any point. BYU shot 52% from the field and made 14 3-pointers en route to notching its third straight victory.

“We were one foot in and one foot out in how we guarded and a lot of other things right from the jump,” Self said. “It was crystal clear how we wanted to try to guard them and right from the jump we doubted and ended up hurting ourselves.”

BYU finished with 24 assists and 14 steals. It marked the first game against a ranked opponent over the last 25 seasons where the Cougars totaled more than 20 assists and 10 steals.

“I think BYU could have beat anyone tonight,” Self said. “They were great and then we didn’t do anything to make them play less than great.”

The Cougars looked impressive on both ends of the court en route to moving into fifth place in the Big 12 standings.

They had 15 assists on 15 baskets in the first half and forced eight turnovers on their way to building a 20-point halftime lead. BYU led by as many as 38 points after halftime.

It is a statement win for the Cougars as much as a statement loss for the Jayhawks. BYU started 2-4 in Big 12 play but has won seven of nine since.

“We’ve been waiting for a win against a really storied program and a team that’s good,” BYU coach Kevin Young said. “Tonight was impressive by how our guys carried out the game plan on both ends of the floor.”

🏀 Kansas struggles reach low point in 34-point loss to unranked BYU

The Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association has released the
girls pre-state and boys pre-regional rankings. The Hays High girls are fourth in
the 5A team rankings and have six individuals ranked. 

Dalton Meyers and Johnny Rigler remain the only Hays boys
ranked.

The Oakley girls are No. 1 in 321A, Norton is second
followed by Plainville, Russell and Stockton. Trego is ranked ninth.

The undefeated Hays High girls’ basketball team remains
fourth in the final Kansas Basketball Coaches Association Class 5A rankings released
Tuesday afternoon. The top six spots remain unchanged with undefeated Topeka
Seaman atop the 5A poll.

The Hoxie girls remain at No. 5 in Class 2A with
Phillipsburg in at No. 10. The Quinter girls remain seventh in 1A Division 1.
Wheatland-Grinnell holds at No. 8 in 1A Division 2.

Great Bend remains fourth in 5A, Goodland stays atop the 4A
poll, Logan-Palco moves up a spot to No. 2 in 1A Division 2 while Victoria
remains ranked 10th.

HAYS, Kan. - The Fort Hays State baseball team will wait one extra day to open its MIAA schedule in 2025, with the Tigers' trip to Fort Smith, Ark. to take on league newcomer Arkansas-Fort Smith pushed back one day, announced Tuesday.

Due to the winter weather and low temperatures, the Tigers and Lions will now play in a three-game set beginning on Saturday (Feb. 22). First pitch is set for 3 p.m. on Saturday, 2 p.m. on Sunday and 1 p.m. on Monday.

Both the Tigers and Lions are 5-4 thus far in non-conference action. Fort Hays State is 4-1 all-time against UAFS, including a 2-1 record in Arkansas.&nbsp;&nbsp;

⚾ First conference series pushed back one day for Tigers

There are a variety of ways of measuring top team performances in sporting events.

Take, for example, the Hays High School boys’ swim team.

The Indians finished second in team scoring at last week’s Western Athletic Conference Championships while fielding the smallest roster in the meet.

But the team trophy is about the only top award the Indians didn’t bring home.

The HHS squad of 10 swimmers won eight of the 11 events and recorded four other top-three finishes.

The Indians powered their way through the meet, recording first-place times in the first seven events, then winning the meet finale (the 400-yard freestyle relay).

However, Hays High ultimately couldn’t keep up with Garden City’s roster depth. The Buffaloes were able to enter numerous swimmers whose points in lower placings added to their team score.

In the end, the Indians finished second to Garden City in team points (390-346.5) but still came home with 14 gold medals – more than twice as many as Garden City.

Following that impressive performance, Hays High coach Tyler Stein was voted WAC Coach of the Year, and HHS senior Marshall Sook earned WAC swimmer-of-the-year honors.

“Having my old coach there and other coaches I’ve gotten to know through the years was cool,” said Stein, a former all-state swimmer at Great Bend High School. “It was rewarding to see that they felt I had done a good job this year.”

Sook won both his individual events – the 50- and 100-yard freestyle – and also was a member of the Indians’ two gold-medal relay teams (the 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle).

Juniors Karsen Flaska and Chase Zadina also each won four golds.

Both swam on those championship relay teams with Sook, while Flaska also won the 200-yard individual medley and 500-yard freestyle, and Zadina won the 100-yard butterfly and tied for first in the 200-yard freestyle.

The final member of the championship 200-yard medley relay team was junior Noah Schaeffer, who also was fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Schaeffer also helped the Indians’ 200-yard freestyle relay team finish third along with seniors Christian Miller, Bryton Unsworth and Justin Reeves. Those three seniors completed their prep careers in style by winning WAC medals while also scoring valuable points in other races along with junior Levi Crisenberry.

“I was really proud of all the guys, and I made sure they knew that,” Stein said. “I wanted them to know how grateful I am how hard they worked this year, and that hard work paid off.”

Sophomore Cedric Durr won two medals – a gold in the 400-yard freestyle relay and a silver in the 100-yard butterfly.&nbsp;

Completing the Indians’ list of individual WAC medalists was junior Jude Hileman, the runner-up in the 100y backstroke.

Next up for the Indians is this weekend’s Class 5-1A Swimming and Diving State Championships in Lenexa.

Hays High has qualified for state in five events – five more automatic qualifications than a year ago.

“I am so proud of this team, especially with them only making a state consideration time last year,” Stein said. “The improvement this year individually and in the relays has been phenomenal.”

Sook will compete at state in his two freestyle specialties as well as the 200-yard and 400-yard freestyle relays.

Flaska, Zadina and Durr will make up three-fourths of both those relays as well as the 200-yard medley relay. Schaeffer will complete the foursome in the medley relay, and Hileman will accompany the team to state as an alternate.

 </figure>By DIANE GASPER-O’BRIEN Special to Hays PostThere are a variety of ways of measuring top team performances in sporting events.Take, for example, the Hays High School boys’ swim team.The Indians finished second in team scoring at last week’s Western Athletic Conference Championships while fielding the smallest roster in the meet.But the team trophy is about the only top award the Indians didn’t bring home.The HHS squad of 10 swimmers won eight of the 11 events and recorded four other top-three finishes.The Indians powered their way through the meet, recording first-place times in the first seven events, then winning the meet finale (the 400-yard freestyle relay).However, Hays High ultimately couldn’t keep up with Garden City’s roster depth. The Buffaloes were able to enter numerous swimmers whose points in lower placings added to their team score.In the end, the Indians finished second to Garden City in team points (390-346.5) but still came home with 14 gold medals – more than twice as many as Garden City.Following that impressive performance, Hays High coach Tyler Stein was voted WAC Coach of the Year, and HHS senior Marshall Sook earned WAC swimmer-of-the-year honors.“Having my old coach there and other coaches I’ve gotten to know through the years was cool,” said Stein, a former all-state swimmer at Great Bend High School. “It was rewarding to see that they felt I had done a good job this year.”Sook won both his individual events – the 50- and 100-yard freestyle – and also was a member of the Indians’ two gold-medal relay teams (the 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle).Juniors Karsen Flaska and Chase Zadina also each won four golds.Both swam on those championship relay teams with Sook, while Flaska also won the 200-yard individual medley and 500-yard freestyle, and Zadina won the 100-yard butterfly and tied for first in the 200-yard freestyle.The final member of the championship 200-yard medley relay team was junior Noah Schaeffer, who also was fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke.Schaeffer also helped the Indians’ 200-yard freestyle relay team finish third along with seniors Christian Miller, Bryton Unsworth and Justin Reeves. SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Ezra Ausar had 21 points and Lawson Lovering posted a double-double to help Utah hold on for a 74-69 victory over Kansas State on Monday night.

Ausar made 7 of 14 shots and all seven of his free throws, adding eight rebounds for the Utes (15-11, 7-8 Big 12 Conference). Lovering totaled 15 points and 10 rebounds for his first double-double this season. Gabe Madsen added 13 points.

Brendan Hausen scored 17 to lead the Wildcats (13-13, 7-8), who have lost two straight following a six-game win streak. Max Jones and Dug McDaniel both scored 13 with McDaniel adding six assists.

Lovering had nine points for Utah and Jones scored 10 for Kansas State in a first half that ended in a 32-32 tie.

Utah scored the first seven points of the second half to grab the lead. A Lovering dunk upped the Utes' advantage to 46-37 with 14:36 left to play. Madsen hit a 3-pointer to give Utah a 57-50 lead with 5:22 left, but Hausen hit a 3-pointer and two free throws as the Wildcats scored the next seven points to tie it with 3:25 remaining.

It was 59-all when Miro Little scored in the paint for Utah and Madsen followed with a 3-pointer. Jones had a layup with 15 seconds left to get the Wildcats within two, but the Utes made 3 of 4 foul shots in the final 12 seconds to wrap up the win.

Utah outrebounded K-State 51-28. The Utes had 21 rebounds at the offensive end, leading to 14 second-chance points.

Utah travels to play UCF on Sunday. Kansas State will host Arizona State on Sunday.

HAYS - Monday evening Hays High and McPherson played their rescheduled games from last week.

GIRLS: #4 Hays 60, McPherson 29 Hays High overcame a cold shooting night to beat McPherson 60-29.

The Indians scored the first six points of the game forcing McPherson to take a time out ninety seconds into the contest. The Bullpups cut the lead back to two points at 8-6 and then trimmed it down to one at 10-9. McPherson had a chance to take the lead but missed their shot.

The Indians scored the final five points of the first quarter for a 15-9 advantage. McPherson hit a three to get within three points at 17-12 with 6:30 remaining before halftime. The remainder of the quarter belonged to Hays. They went on a 16-2 run that included the last ten points of the quarter for a 33-14 halftime advantage.
