ANDOVER – The Hays High softball team wrapped up their regular season with a split Tuesday. The Indians rallied to beat host Andover Central 7-6 then lost to Salina South 10-5 in game two.
The Indians closed out the regular season 13-7. They will find out Saturday who and when they play in next week’s regionals.
Game 1: Hays 7, Andover Central 6
The Indians scored all seven of their runs in the final two innings for their seventh straight win.
Trailing 5-1, Dezarea Schmidt, Riley Dreher and Lakyn Zimmerman all had RBI singles to cut the gap to 5-3.
Ashlyn Zimmer pulled Hays within a run with an RBI single in the seventh. Aubree Thomas tied the game with a single to left. The Indians took the lead on a Schmidt groundout . Zimmerman singled with two outs driving in what proved to be the game-winning run.
The Jaguars stole home for a run in the seventh but a groundout ended the game with the tying run at second base.
Thomas (7-4) went the distance in the circle allowing five earned runs on six hits with five strikeouts and two walks.
Thomas, Dreher, Zimmerman, and Zimmer all finished with two hits. Schmidt and Zimmerman both drove in two runs.
Game 2: Salina South 10, Hays 5
The Cougars scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to break open a one-run game.
Hays scored three in the top of the first only to see South get two in the bottom of the inning. The Indians added two in the top of the second but the Cougars got four in the bottom to grab a 6-5 lead where it would remain until the sixth.
Riley Dreher (6-3)went the distance in the circle allowing three earned runs on 12 hits with two strikeouts and one walk.
Dreher had three of the Indians seven hits. Morgen Berry drove in two of their five runs.
