BALTIMORE -- Bruce Zimmermann threw six effective innings and Baltimore Orioles beat the Kansas City Royals 4-2 to earn a doubleheader split on Sunday.

The Royals won the opener 6-4 when Michael Taylor hit a tiebreaking single in the ninth after a pair of two-out Baltimore errors.

In the second game, Zimmermann (2-1) allowed two runs and five hits with five strikeouts and no walks.

“That’s the No. 1 goal for all of the starters is to have a quality start, try to go six innings, and try to take the pressure off the bullpen every single night,” Zimmermann said. “I’m feeling really good about being able to go six innings today.”

The Orioles pounced early, scoring three runs in the first off Daniel Lynch (2-2) on a passed ball, an RBI single by Ryan Mountcastle and a sacrifice fly by Ramón Urías.

The Royals pulled to within 3-1 when Hunter Dozier hit a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Whit Merrifield.

Tyler Nevin added an RBI single in the fourth that boosted the Orioles’ lead to 4-1. Dozier cut the margin to 4-2 with a run-scoring single in the sixth.

Keegan Akin pitched two scoreless innings for the Orioles and Dillon closed out the ninth to pick up his first save and fourth of his career.

Orioles outfielder Austin Hays went 5 for 7 over the two games and leads the team with nine multi-hit games.

“When he swings at strikes, he hits the ball,” Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said. “Right now, I feel like he’s a little more patient, he’s getting in good counts and he’s taking some walks. He’s not trying to do too much.”

In the opener with the score 4-all, Jorge Lopez (3-2) retired the first two batters in the ninth. Nicky Lopez then reached when second baseman Rougned Odor misplayed a sharp grounder and took third on a wild pickoff throw by the Orioles reliever.

Kansas City manager Mike Matheny recorded his 700th career win in the majors with the Royals and St. Louis.

“It’s pretty cool,” Matheny said. “I like it.”

Royals starter Zack Greinke allowed two runs on a season-high 10 hits with three strikeouts and no walks over 5/2/3 innings.

“I just tried to make pitches,” Greinke said. “I kept thinking when guys were on base, ‘Don’t make a mistake now.’ Keep making pitches and it won’t be that bad.”

👟 FHSU men place fifth at MIAA Outdoor Championships

EMPORIA, Kan. - The Fort Hays State women's track and field team finished fourth at the 2022 MIAA Outdoor Championships with 82 team points, tied for the program's best finish at the outdoor league meet. The Tigers picked up two more event victories and four All-MIAA performances on Sunday, giving FHSU three MIAA champions and five All-MIAA honorees for the week. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6538">Lyric Holman</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6537">Alexandra Hart</a>&nbsp;both added another MIAA Championship to their trophy case. Holman won the 100m dash by a mere .003 seconds with a time of 11.57 for her fourth league title. Holman later placed fourth in the 200m dash with a time of 24.02 to add five more team points. Hart grabbed her third MIAA title and her fourth All-MIAA honor with another win in the high jump. 👟 FHSU women fourth at MIAA meet, two champs Sunday

EMPORIA, Kan. -&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6549">Mattie Rossi</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6540">Gretchen Kuffel</a>&nbsp;had record breaking performances on Saturday at the MIAA Outdoor Championships. Rossi's new record came in the 400-meter hurdle prelims, while Kuffel topped the 3,000-meter steeplechase field.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6556">Abigail Stewart</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6551">Taylor Savolt</a>&nbsp;joined Kuffel in generating points for the FHSU women, while the FHSU men saw team points generated by&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6513">Ryan Stanley</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6485">Jacob Clark</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6493">Mark Faber</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6507">Jack Pakkebier</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6511">Robbie Schmidt</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6481">Grant Bradley</a>, and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6505">Kolgan Ohl</a>. Rossi ran a time of 58.54 seconds to top the 400-meter hurdle prelim field. She shattered her own school record set earlier this season. She became the first FHSU woman to post a sub-one minute time in the event. Her previous record was 1:00.17. Her time Saturday is third best in the nation based off the national provisional list entering the weekend. She also turned in a personal best time of 13.80 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles to finish second in the prelims, setting up an opportunity to score big points for the Tigers in both hurdle events on Sunday. Kuffel just recently broke the 3,000-meter steeplechase record and did it again on Saturday evening in her winning effort. She shaved just over three seconds off her previous best, running 10:47.30. Kuffel won the race by over four seconds. She was one of three with provisional times in the race and generated 10 points for the Tigers. Stanley, Clark, and Faber generated 14 points for the FHSU men in the pole vault. Stanley secured an All-MIAA finish with a clearance of 17'0" for third place. Clark cleared the same height, but took one extra attempt to do so and finished in fourth. Faber cleared 16'4". Pakkebier and Schmidt combined to give FHSU 10 points. Pakkebier turned in a fourth-place finish in the decathlon with a total of 6,345 points. Schmidt was fourth in the 10,000 meters in 30:23.66. Bradley added four points for the Tigers in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a fifth-place finish. He ran a time of 9:09.48. Savolt generated points for the Tiger women in two events. She finished fifth in the heptathlon with 4,865 points and then eighth in the long jump in a distance of 18' 4.25". Stewart had a fifth place finish in the 10,000 meters with a time of 37:23.22 to add four points for the Tiger women. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6505">Kolgan Ohl</a>&nbsp;picked up three points for the FHSU men over two events. He was seventh in the hammer throw with a distance of 184'3" and eighth in the discus at 165'1". <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6538">Lyric Holman</a>&nbsp;puched her ticket to the finals of the 100 and 200-meter dashes on Sunday. She was second in the 100 prelims in 11.58 seconds and fourth in the 200 prelims in 24.34 seconds. Rossi ran a time of 58.54 seconds to top the 400-meter hurdle prelim field. She shattered her own school record set earlier this season. She became the first FHSU woman to post a sub-one minute time in the event. Her previous record was 1:00.17. Her time Saturday is third best in the nation based off the national provisional list entering the weekend. She also turned in a personal best time of 13.80 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles to finish second in the prelims, setting up an opportunity to score big points for the Tigers in both hurdle events on Sunday. Kuffel just recently broke the 3,000-meter steeplechase record and did it again on Saturday evening in her winning effort. She shaved just over three seconds off her previous best, running 10:47.30. Kuffel won the race by over four seconds. She was one of three with provisional times in the race and generated 10 points for the Tigers. Stanley, Clark, and Faber generated 14 points for the FHSU men in the pole vault. Stanley secured an All-MIAA finish with a clearance of 17'0" for third place. Clark cleared the same height, but took one extra attempt to do so and finished in fourth. Faber cleared 16'4". Pakkebier and Schmidt combined to give FHSU 10 points. Pakkebier turned in a fourth-place finish in the decathlon with a total of 6,345 points. Schmidt was fourth in the 10,000 meters in 30:23.66. Bradley added four points for the Tigers in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a fifth-place finish. He ran a time of 9:09.48. Savolt generated points for the Tiger women in two events. She finished fifth in the heptathlon with 4,865 points and then eighth in the long jump in a distance of 18' 4.25". HAYS – Life Prep Academy scored three runs in the top of the
sixth inning to retake the lead and beat the Hays High baseball team 6-3 in the
final game of the Western Plains Diamond Classic Saturday at Hays High School.
The Fire went 4-0 to win the title and have now won 14-straight games. The
Indians finshed 1-3.

After the Fire (20-7) scored two in the top of the first, the Indians (10-8)&nbsp; answered with single runs in the third, fourth and fifth to take a 3-2 lead. Garrett
Wellbrock drove in Dylan Dreiling with the first run on a groundout to first. Carson
Spray tied the game with a two-out single to center which scored pinch-runner
Brett Schumacher. Wellbrock then put Hays up 3-2 when he scored a squeeze play
with two outs.

Life Prep got the lead back for good with three the next
innings. The first came on a sacrifice to tie the game 3-3. They took the lead
following an error on a grounder to third then added the final run on a two-out
single the center

The Fire tacked on an insurance run on a throwing error in the
seventh.

Life Prep starter Ethian Samaniego held the Indians to three
runs on three hits with three strikeouts and four walks over four innings. Maestro
Saunders pitched three scoreless innings of relief and picked up the win.

Toby May allowed one earned run on four hits with one walk and
took the loss in relief in his varsity debut after starter Carson Spray allowed
two runs on four hits over four innings.

The Indians close out the regular season Tuesday at home
against Ulysses.

⚾ Indians fall in Diamond Classic finale

HAYS – The Hays High baseball team split their two games on
day two the Western Plains Diamond Classic at Hays High School. The Indians lost
a marathon 15 inning affair with Manhattan 4-2 but bounced back with a 3-2 win
over Trinity Academy out of Wichita in the final game of the day.

The Indians (10-7) close out play at the Diamond Classic Saturday
against Life Prep of Wichita at 3:45 p.m. The Fire defeated Manhattan by run-rule
and Great Bend in their two games Friday.

Game 1: Manhattan 4, Hays 2 (15 innings) 
After 11 scoreless innings, Manhattan broke through with two runs in the top of
the 12th only to see Hays High answer with two in the bottom of the inning on Dylan
Dreiling’s two-out, two-run homer. It was Dreiling’s ninth of the season which is a new single-season record, breaking the old mark of eight held by Jeremy Schmeidler.

Manhattan took the lead for good with two in the 15th on a
solo homer from Kyler Horsman and an error. The Indians were retired in order in
the bottom of the inning to end the game.

Hays had their chances to take the lead early, leaving the
bases loaded in the first then stranding runners at the corners in the second.
The Indians only base runner over the next five innings came in the fifth after a double from Dreiling which was the Indians first hit of the game.

Hays got two on to start the eighth and had two on in the 10th. They also had a runner thrown out at the plate trying to score from second on a single to end the 11th.

Dalton Dale took the loss in relief allowing three earned
runs on five hits with two strikeouts and five walks over 5 1/3 innings.

Starter Dylan Dreiling allowed only one hit over 9 1/3 innings
with 11 strikeouts and two walks.

Dreiling had three hits and Noah Weimer added two.

Manhattan starter Coy Cavender also allowed only one hit over
7 innings with 13 strikeouts and three walks.

Game 2: Hays 3, Trinity Academy 2 
Garrett Wellbrock’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth scored Gage
Porter with the go-ahead run as the Indians ended their three-game losing streak.

The Knights grabbed the lead with a run in the top of
the first, but the Indians answered in the bottom of the inning on Dalton Dale’s
single to right which scored Dylan Dreiling.

Trinity grabbed a 2-1 lead in the fourth on a fielders choice
but the Indians again had an answer when Bradyn Dreher scored on a Carson Spray
groundout.

Blake Schmidt pitched five innings and picked up the win. He
allowed two runs on three hits with eight strikeouts and five walks. Keatyn
Barnett pitched two hitless innings of relief for the save.

Bradyn Dreher had two of the Indians six hits.

to six games with a doubleheader sweep over Colby Friday. The Monarchs won 13-2
and 18-1 and are now 10-4 on the season.

👟 Multis start at MIAA Championships

RUSSELL – The TMP-Marian girls finished first and the boys
fifth at Friday’s Russell Relays at Shaffer Field.

The girls won six individual events and two relays. Emilee
Lane, Kassidi Yost and Shalee Gottschalk all won three gold medals. Lane won the
800 and was on the winning 4x800 and 4x400 relays. Yost won the high jump and
was on the winning 4x400 and 4x100 relays and Gottschalk won the 100 hurdles
and was on the 4x100 and 4x400 relays. Ella Bain won the 3200, 1600. Emma
Basgall won the long jump and Kali Hagans the discus. 

The Monarch boys won two events. Kade Harris took the 100
meters (22.89) and they won the 4x800 relay.

Plainville’s Emma Rudman won the girls discus (123-3) and shot
put (35-6) and Jesse Kerns won the triple jump (33-8). Braylon Bittel won the boys
javelin (153-7) and Anders Dewey the 110 Hurdles (16.16).

HAYS – Great Bend scored five runs
in the third inning but it was a Sage Koelch three-run homer in the fifth that
proved to be the difference in the Panthers 8-6 win over Hays High in the opening
game of the Diamond Classic Thursday night.

The Indians (9-6) rallied with a run in
the fifth and six in the sixth and had the tying runs on base in the seventh
before a strikeout ended the comeback and the game.

Great Bend (12-3) used three
straight singles followed by two walks and a hit batter to score all five of
their runs in the third with two outs.

It looked like the Indians might avoid
any damage in the fifth when Brad Beck was thrown out at the plate on a perfect
relay&nbsp; throw from Dalton Dale followong a Carter Coombs double, but a two-out walk followed by Koelsch’s line drive
homer to left put the Panthers up 8-0.

The Indians struck back with a run
in the bottom of the fifth then took advantage of&nbsp; back-to-back errors
and singles from Carson Spray and Jack Fields to score their first two runs in the
sixth. Spray scored on a passed ball to make it an 8-4 game. After an intentional
walk to Dylan Dreiling, the Indians tacked on two more runs on an error but a
strikeout ended the inning.

The Indians got two on in the
seventh with a single and an error but failed to score.

Starting pitcher Garrett Wellbrock (4-1)
struggled with the light rain that fell through most of the contest. The senior allowed all eight runs on
nine hits with five walks and one strikeout. Keatyn Barnett pitched two scoreless
innings of relief, allowing only one hit.

Stef Spray picked up the win for the
Panthers allowing one earned run on five hits with one strikeout and four walks.

The Panthers have won six-straight
while the Indians drop their second in-a-row. Hays will play Manhattan Friday
at 11:00 a.m. then take on Wichita Trinity at 7:15 p.m. They close out the
classic against Word of Life out of Wichita at 3:45 p.m. on Saturday.

This is Schmidt's second All-MIAA honor and the first for Kehe in his first year of intercollegiate competition. Schmidt is the first two-time honoree for the Tigers since Alex Weiss in 2016 (HM) and 2018 (2nd team). Jenner led the team in hits (49), runs (36), walks (26), on-base percentage (.391) and stolen bases (12). FHSU's leadoff hitter for much of the year, Kehe tied for 15th in the league in both walks and stolen bases. He was nominated as a utility player after starting 33 games at second base and 12 at first base. The redshirt-freshman hit safely in his first six games at the collegiate level while opening his career with an 18-game streak of reaching base safely. The Golden, Colo. native tied for the team lead with 12 multi-hit games, including a pair of four-hit contests. Kehe posted a fielding percentage of .969 with 138 putouts, 80 assists and just seven errors in 225 chances on the infield. Grant was the team leader in batting average (.294), slugging percentage (.619), home runs (14), doubles (10) and RBI (51). The Hastings, Neb. native tied for ninth in the league in home runs and was 12th in RBI. He started all 45 games for the Tigers, including 38 in left field, six in right field and once as the designated hitter. The senior wrapped up his career with a home run in his final at-bat as a Tiger, one of three home runs in his final series of the season. He finished the year on a seven-game hitting streak, tied for the longest of the season on the team and the second-longest in his career. Angram-Boldin was a Don Hansen All-America Honorable Mention selection as an offensive lineman for the 2021 season. He was a three-time All-MIAA selection for the Tigers in football, including first-team honors in 2021. He was also an All-Super Region 3 First Team selection by the D2CCA in 2021. He made 34 consecutive starts for the Tigers dating back to the start of his sophomore season of 2018. He helped the Tiger offense generate a new school record for first downs gained in a season three straight years. Angram-Boldin helped the Tigers to back-to-back MIAA Championships in 2017 and 2018 and the Tigers had a record of 33-13 during his four years on the field. Angram-Boldin is a native of Pahokee, Florida. Breckbill played softball for five years at FHSU from 2018-2022, utilizing her extra COVID year after the 2020 season was cut short due to the pandemic. FHSU's Angram-Boldin, Breckbill receive 2022 NSCA All-American Athlete Award

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Yadier Molina wasn't going to let an illness that kept the Cardinals catcher out of the previous day's lineup also keep him from walking onto the field with Adam Wainwright for the 310th time on Wednesday.

Nor was Molina going to take the rest of the day off after St. Louis jumped out to a big lead.

“He felt terrible (yesterday) and today felt terrible,” Wainwright said of his longtime teammate, who caught him for seven innings of one-hit ball in a 10-0 win over the Kansas City Royals on a cold, damp day at Kauffman Stadium.

“I told him if he just wanted to play five and leave, I'd understand. But he didn't want to leave me out there.”

Rarely is one ever on the field without the other.

Wainwright and Molina, who went 1 for 5 at the plate, tied the Braves’ Warren Spahn and Del Crandall for the most team wins by starting battery mates with their 202nd together.

Now, Wainwright and Molina need just six more starts to match Spahn and Crandall for second in history behind Mickey Lolich and Bill Freehan of the Tigers.

“The battery mates is awesome,” Wainwright said, “but the winning is the cool part.”

Wainwright (3-3) allowed just a one-out single to Michael Taylor in the third against the weak-hitting Royals, whose only other baserunners against the 40-year-old right-hander came on a fielder's choice, an error and a walk.

Meanwhile, the slumbering St. Louis offense came alive in a big way: Nolan Arenado hit a three-run homer and drove in five runs, Tyler O'Neill hit a two-run shot and drove in three, and Harrison Bader and Paul DeJong also drove in runs.

“We've just got to be better. I believe we're better,” Arenado said. “Some guys just aren't comfortable yet. That will come.”

The final scheduled game between the cross-state rivals this year was moved from a night game to the afternoon because of the threat of rain, though sprinkles still fell on the sparse Kauffman Stadium crowd midway through it.

By that point, the few fans still in their seats were mostly wearing red.

It took a mere 17 pitches from Kris Bubic (0-3) for Tommy Edman and Paul Goldschmidt to work leadoff walks and Arenado to turn on a 2-1 pitch, depositing it 410 feet away in the left-field stands and giving the Cardinals a 3-0 lead.

The three runs were more than they had scored against Kansas City the past two games combined.

“You’re going to give up homers, that’s going to happen,” Royals manager Mike Matheny said, “but free bases in front of them are going to add up."

Albert Pujols, who brashly proclaimed pregame that “I'm going to do some damage today,” promptly flied out. But the rest of the St. Louis lineup kept on wrecking: Juan Yepez blooped a single to right for his first big league hit, O'Neill drove him in with a triple and Bader provided a sacrifice fly to make it 5-0 before the Royals had a turn to bat.

The final line on Bubic: four runs and two hits and two walks while retiring a single batter.

“I told Nolan if they want to score five runs for me the first inning the rest of the year, that's fine,” Wainwright said. “I'm good with that plan.”

Yepez, who was recalled from Triple-A Memphis to replace ailing INF Edmundo Sosa a day earlier, got the start in RF in his big league debut. He finished 2 for 3 with a pair of bloop doubles down the right-field line.

Royals C MJ Melendez got his first start behind the plate Wednesday. Last year's minor league home run champ went 1 for 3 after also getting a hit as the DH in his big league debut Tuesday night.

Cardinals: No new COVID-19 cases were reported after Sosa and four staff members tested positive and were sent back to St. Louis for quarantine. The Cardinals are taking RHP Jake Walsh and C Ali Sanchez from the taxi squad on their upcoming trip in case more positives occur. “I’ll clean the toilets if I need to. I just want to stay,” Walsh said.

Brasser turned in a final-round score of 6-over 78 Wednesday at the Park Course at Hot Springs Country Club, a par-72, 5,932-yard layout. With the top three teams and the top two individuals not on those teams moving on to the National Championships in Gainesville, Ga., Brasser finished one shot back of the final individual qualifying slot. An honorable mention All-MIAA selection for the second year in a row, Brasser finished third amongst the 27 MIAA golfers at this year's regional. Brasser was the top finisher out of the six individuals selected to compete in the field this season, overcoming a six-stroke deficit after round one to beat MWSU's Allycia Gan by one shot. The Andale, Kan. native bogeyed six of her first 11 holes before finishing the tournament with seven consecutive pars. She tied for fourth in the field in both par-3 scoring (1-over) and par-5 scoring (1-under). Her six birdies over the 54-hole tournament were tied for 10th in the field of 51 student-athletes. Brasser finished the week with 35 pars, 13th-most in the tournament, 11 bogeys and two double bogeys. Host Henderson State took home the team title with a total score of 18-over 882 behind the strength of three individuals in the top five. Reddie Gracen Blount won the individual title by two shots at 1-over par. Brasser lowered her season stroke average to 77.2 after rounds of 76, 71 and 78 this week. She posted a spring average of 75.9 over 14 rounds, including top 10 finishes in five of six events and her first collegiate victory.
