DENVER, Colo. – Fort Hays State played to a draw with MSU Denver on Sunday. The No. 23 ranked Tigers equalized the match, which ended 2-2, in the 77th minute. FHSU moved to 1-0-1, while MSU Denver moved to 0-0-2.

The Tigers struck first in the 9th minute when Mario Leal Vales netted his first goal of the season, assisted by Mamadou Oumar Ndiaye. MSU Denver responded quickly, leveling the match in the 12th minute on a goal from Colin McKenna, assisted by Brendan O'Toole. The Roadrunners seized the lead in the 27th minute when James Doidge found the back of the net and took their 2-1 lead to halftime.

An early red card to the Tigers just over 34 minutes into the match made it a challenge for a comeback, or even allowing more goals down a man. However, despite MSU Denver holding a strong 11-3 shot advantage in the second half, Elias Ovelar Semeniuk found the net in the 77th minute off a pass from Bastian Carlman. The Tigers allowed only two more shots the remainder of the match to get out of Denver with a draw.

Tiger keeper Payton Roehrich had five saves in the match, while MSU Denver keeper Nick McNeil had four. Carlman led the Tigers with three shots in the match.

FHSU plays its first home match of the season on Thursday night when nationally ranked CSU Pueblo comes to Hays for a 6 p.m. match at FHSU Soccer Stadium.

DENVER (AP) — Denver's ferocious defense has no bigger fan than Bo Nix.

“It's the best feeling when you've got a great defense,” the second-year quarterback said Sunday after the defense bailed him out and spoiled top overall draft pick&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/tennessee-titans-cam-ward-773c1ce93688e3be7d37c4cbcc427775">Cam Ward's debut</a>&nbsp;in a 20-12 victory over the Tennessee Titans.

Nix had an off-day, throwing a pair of interceptions to go with his one touchdown toss and losing a fumble for the first time since 2021 when he was at Auburn.

Nix's defense had his back again and again, piling up a half-dozen sacks and holding the Titans to a measly 2.4 yards per play.

“I mean, just over and over they got us out of a jam,” Nix said.

Ward was held to 12-of-28 passing for 112 yards with no touchdowns. He didn’t have an interception, but fumbled the ball away in the final minute on his sixth sack.

The Titans went 2 for 14 on third down and their 133 yards of total offense was almost entirely wiped out by their 131 yards on 13 accepted penalties.

“The one that really sticks out is they get the ball down 1 and we get two sacks and get them out of field goal range," Nix said. "That'll change the game in a hurry and changes the environment ... It was awesome to see different players making big plays.”

Because of that deep defense, the Titans managed just six points on their four takeaways.

“Incredibly frustrating,” Tennessee coach Brian Callahan said. “Those are opportunities to score points and put the game away and we didn’t do it.”

Last season, teams that had four or more turnovers won just three of 18 games.

“We had a dominant performance,” said reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year Patrick Surtain II. “Starting the season off like that should allow us to separate ourselves.”

The Broncos befuddled Ward, forcing five punts and a turnover on Tennessee's final six possessions after the Titans had gone ahead 12-10 on Joey Slye's fourth field goal in the third quarter.

Quarterbacks taken at No. 1 overall are now 4-15-1 in the common draft era starting a season opener. Since 2000, the last 17 quarterbacks taken No. 1 overall are&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/JoshDubowAP/status/1962538360297406629">1-15-1</a>.

“The only way," Ward said, “is up.”

Tennessee had three chances to tie it in the final five minutes but came up empty each time.

After holding Nix to no gain on fourth-and-inches at the Denver 46 with 5:07 remaining, Tennessee went three-and-out and punted for the eighth time.

The Titans stuffed Marvin Mims Jr. well short of the line to gain with under 3 minutes to go, but star defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons was flagged for unnecessary roughness when he knocked Mims to the ground after the whistle. Earlier, Simmons was responsible for Nix's first lost fumble as a pro.

That flag extended the drive, which ended on an incompletion on fourth-and-8 from the Tennessee 36 with 1:05 remaining. That gave Ward &amp; Co. one last shot but after three incompletions, Ward was strip-sacked by Ja'Quan McMillian on fourth down and Broncos first-round draft pick Jahdae Barron recovered.

The teams combined to score 10 points in the final 16 seconds of the first half.

Nix threw a&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/NFL/status/1964804003440849009">22-yard touchdown pass to Courtland Sutton</a>&nbsp;that gave Denver its first lead at 10-6, but instead of blasting the ball through the end zone for a touchback, Wil Lutz kicked off to the 5 and Chimere Dike returned it 71 yards to the Denver 24. Slye nailed a 42-yard field goal to pull Tennessee to 10-9 at the break.

Lutz restored Denver's lead with a 33-yard field goal and rookie R.J. Harvey's 50-yard scamper set up J.K. Dobbins' 19-yard TD burst.

Mims, a two-time All-Pro punt returner, muffed a punt early in the fourth quarter, giving Tennessee possession at the Denver 24. Consecutive sacks by Jonah Ellis and Zach Allen pushed the Titans out of field goal range, however.

“Can’t take a sack in those situations," Callahan said. “It’s a learning moment for him. This is a really tough test out the gate, his first start against his defense in this stadium. There’s plenty of things he’s going to learn.”

Titans: RB Kalel Mullings sustained an ankle injury in the first half. ... T JC Latham suffered a hip injury and CB Jarvis Brownlee Jr. got hurt in the second half.

Broncos: TE Evan Engram suffered a calf injury in the second half, stayed in the game and then limped off in the fourth quarter and tossed his helmet.

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State had its home opener spoiled on a late rally from Northwestern Oklahoma State on Sunday at FHSU Soccer Stadium. The Tigers held a 1-0 advantage for nearly 65 minutes, but saw the Rangers score two goals in the final eight minutes of the match to take the match 2-1.

Fort Hays State took its lead with a goal by Chaley French in the 17th minute, assisted by Sydney Cotter. A header shot by Cotter saved initially by the NWOSU goalkeeper went perfectly to the foot of French right in front of the net. The Tigers had good offensive pressure in the first half with 11 shots compared to Northwestern Oklahoma's three, and had the advantage in corner kicks, four to one. The Tigers led 1-0 at halftime.

A perfectly placed crossing pass by NWOSU's Eryn Warren with just under eight minutes to play resulted in a header goal by Jazelle Alvarado to equalize the match. Then with less than five minutes to play, Christi-Anne Mills took a pass from Jenna Mills and found the net with a shot inside the 18. Despite a persistent attack and earning five corner kicks in the second half, Fort Hays State was unable to find a tying goal in the closing minutes.

Sydney Cotter led the team with six shots, three of which were on goal. Hadley Ostrander made one save, while facing six shots. FHSU outshot NWOSU 19-6 in the match. NWOSU keeper Taylor Annen finished with 11 saves in the match.

Fort Hays State, now 0-2, hosts Augustana in another non-conference contest on Friday, September 12, at 7 p.m. in Hays at FHSU Soccer Stadium.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Byron Buxton and Kody Clemens homered and the Minnesota Twins beat Kansas City 5-1 on Sunday to drop the Royals two games back for the last AL wild card.

Buxton led off the game against Michael Lorenzen (5-10) with his 30th homer, extending his career high. He was hit by a 91.8 mph sinker in the fifth inning and was replaced for the bottom of the sixth because of what the Twins said was a bruised left knee.

Clemens hit his 16th homer in the fourth, a 451-drive that gave Minnesota a 3-0 lead. Minnesota padded its advantage in the fourth with a double steal, with Royce Lewis on first and Luke Keaschall on third.

Kansas City (73-69) fell two games behind Seattle (75-68) for the third AL wild card.

Bailey Ober (5-7) gave up one run and four hits in 5 1/3 innings,

Lorenzen allowed four runs and five hits in 5 1/3 innings.

Kansas City scored on Vinnie Pasquantino's RBI single in the sixth.

Kansas City had the potential tying run at the plate with one out in the eighth before Kody Funderburk struck out Pasquantino and Justin Topa retired Salvador Perez on a groundout.

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State split a pair of thrilling five-set matches on Saturday at Gross Memorial Coliseum in Hays. The Tigers fought off a pesky Kansas Wesleyan team in their first match of the day, winning the final two sets, but then fell to Rockhurst in a win-by-two situation in the fifth set of the night cap. FHSU topped KWU by scores of 25-15, 23-25, 24-26, 25-19, 15-12. The Tigers fell just short to Rockhurst 25-22, 15-25, 19-25, 29-27, 14-16.

Fort Hays State 3, Kansas Wesleyan 2 Fort Hays State edged Kansas Wesleyan in the first contest, having to rally from down two sets to one. Kansas Wesleyan edged the Tigers by two points in both the second and third sets to take the lead. FHSU comfortably won the fourth set, but then had to battle back from an 8-4 deficit in the fifth to win 15-12. A key 8-1 run flipped the Tigers from four down to three up as they held off the Coyotes' charge.

Fort Hays St. capitalized on a strong offensive performance with 77 kills and a .306 hitting percentage. Kansas Wesleyan hit .233 as a team in the match, but really gained momentum to get past FHSU in the middle of the match when it hit .432 in the second set.

Fort Hays raced out to a 7-0 lead in the first set. Despite a brief pushback from Kansas Wesleyan, the Tigers maintained control as five different players had at least three kills in the set, led by Ella Goodwin with four.

Kansas Wesleyan upped its intensity in the second set and stunned the Tigers with a late rally to even up the match. FHSU led 21-16, but saw KWU go on a 9-2 run to take the set by two. Rylee Serpan, who became the all-time leader in kills at Kansas Wesleyan in the match, put down the decisive kill. Goodwin had another strong set with four kills, matched by Grace Schmedding.

Kansas Wesleyan continued its momentum with a 5-1 run to start the third. The Tigers finally pulled back even at 13-13, but took until 16-15 to take their first lead. FHSU led by two a handful of times, but never could get separation and the Coyotes. KWU had a 4-1 burst to win by two, 26-24, and take the lead in the match. Kylee Harris had a big set for KWU with seven kills, while Carsen Cormaney of FHSU nearly matched her with six.

The Tigers weathered the storm with a 6-2 run to open the fourth. They went on to lead by nine a few times before taking the set by six. Ashlyn Reeves led the Tigers with six kills in the set to help even up the match.

The Tigers had to battle from behind in the fifth set, down 8-4. A pivotal moment came when Rains sparked momentum with two consecutive kills, leveling the score at 8-8. Fort Hays State then surged ahead 12-9 with an ace by Hope Duncan and a pair of kills by Schmedding. Goodwin sealed the match with a final kill, ensuring a 15-12 victory

Goodwin led the Tigers with 16 kills, followed by Rains with 15, Reeves with 14, Cormaney with 12, and Schmedding with 10. Abrey Galt shelled out 40 assists, while Kirsten Evans led the Tigers in service aces with three and digs with 16. Schmedding had a double-double in kills and digs (12).

A big-time block from Carsyn Cormaney and Ella Goodwin leveled the score at 11-11, but the Hawks went on another burst to get to match point at 14-11. Gracie Rains responded with a kill, Rockhurst committed an error, and then Ella Goodwin and Cormaney tied the set at 14-14 with an assisted block. Kansas State’s (1-2) final drive ended when Avery Johnson threw an interception just past midfield.

The Black Knights (1-1) kept the ball on the ground, running the ball 70 times out of their 82 offensive plays. Army had four scoring drives of at least 13 plays, including three which took at least seven minutes, and outgained K-State 332-247 in total yards.

Hellums completed 7 of 11 passes and ran 41 times for 124 yards. He tossed a 2-yard touchdown pass to Brady Anderson to end the first half.

Hellums later added a 1-yard TD run late in the third quarter that gave the Black Knights a 14-13 lead, but Bryce Noernberg returned the ensuing kickoff 99 yards into the end zone and K-State regained the lead, 21-13.

Army held a 40:44 to 19:16 advantage in time of possession and is the first K-State opponent to rush for more than 200 yards since late in the 2023 season.

Johnson finished 15-of-25 passing for 172 yards and threw one touchdown pass to Jaron Tibbs for the Wildcats. Tibbs finished with five catches for 61 yards.

Army: The Black Knights went for it on fourth down seven times, converting six. Their most gutsy attempt was Hellums' TD toss to Anderson on 4th-and-goal from the 2 with three seconds left in the first half.

Kansas State: The Wildcats missed starting running back Dylan Edwards, who was injured in the season's opening game the first time he touched the ball. Without Edwards' explosiveness, the Wildcats rushed for 75 yards on 18 carries.

Army: The Black Knights have next weekend off before hosting North Texas on Sept. 20.

Kevin Coleman Jr. had 10 catches for 126 yards and a touchdown, and Brett Norfleet's second TD grab gave the Tigers (2-0) the lead with 4:14 to go, before their defense stopped Jalon Daniels and Co. and allowed Missouri to put the game away.

“I thought that was one of the coolest things: It wasn't our players folding in the moment that caused us to have issues, it was players making plays in the moment that elevated us,” Tigers coach Eli Drinkwitz said.

The series, which began in 1891 and remains among the most-played in Division I football, had been on hiatus since 2011, when Missouri left the Big 12 for the SEC. That move only added another layer of animosity to a rivalry between states that traces its history to the Civil War, and the bloody conflict between slave states and free states.

The tension was evident from the opening kickoff to the final seconds ticking off the clock.

“There's a lot around it,” Kansas coach Lance Leipold said, “but at the same time, it's two teams playing.”

Daniels did his best to lead the Jayhawks (2-1) to victory. He threw for 223 yards and two touchdowns, including one to DeShawn Hanika that gave them a 31-24 lead with 8:45 remaining — a lead that the Kansas defense was unable to hold.

The game was tied 21-all after a first half filled with twists and turns.

Missouri dealt the first blow on Ahmad Hardy's 32-yard run. But the Jayhawks countered with a long TD drive, then returned a fumble 28 yards for another score. Moments later, Daniels silenced sold-out Faurot Field with a sneak for a 21-6 lead.

The Tigers recovered from that quick blitz in the second quarter, though. They allowed Kansas to run just four plays for minus-18 yards, and Pribula's touchdown pass to Coleman — coupled with a safety and two field goals — resulted in a tied score.

Kansas became the first FBS team in a decade to get outgained by 200-plus yards and not trail at the break.

The Jayhawks settled down at halftime, stopping Missouri on fourth down and kicking a field goal in the third quarter to regain the lead. And after the Tigers answered with a methodical 75-yard touchdown drive, Daniels completed a couple of long passes before finding Hanika for the second time in the end zone to give Kansas a 31-24 lead.

Pribula and the Tigers had the final answer, though, twice converting on fourth down before the go-ahead pass to Norfleet late in the game. And after forcing a punt, Roberts put it out of reach with a 63-yard touchdown run in the final minutes.

“Growing up a Mizzou kid, you always heard about this game and how big it is,” Norfleet said. “It's playing for the guy to the left and the right of you, and it's also playing for the past teams that have played KU, and not letting them down.”

Kansas has plenty of opportunities, even after a disastrous second quarter. But it couldn't stop the Tigers on fourth down in the fourth quarter, and that opened the door for Pribula to win the game for them.

🏈 Missouri rallies to beat Kansas in Border War showdown

WICHITA, Kan. - The Fort Hays State men's cross country team opened the 2025 season with a third-place finish at the JK Gold Classic on Saturday. The Tigers collected 93 team points between the top five finishers, just four points behind Washburn who finished second in the 14-team field.

Christian Darrah was the top non-DI runner, placing third out of the 156 finishers. The senior clocked a time of 18:52.1, finishing within 11 seconds of first place. Freshman Austin Ritsema made his collegiate debut with an 18th-place finish, traversing the six-kilometer course in 19:29.7. He was followed closely by Noah Morenz who finished 19th with a time of 19:31.5.

Cole Krug also cleared the 20-minute mark after crossing the line in 19:56.8, placing 35th. Ian Weich rounded out the top five with a 39th-place finish after posting a time of 20:07.7.

👟 Tiger men third in Wichita

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — There are two ways to look at the Kansas City Chiefs' season-opening loss to the Los Angeles Chargers in Brazil.

The pessimist will say that the Chiefs hardly looked like Super Bowl contenders. Their defense allowed Justin Herbert to throw for more than 300 yards and three touchdowns. Their offense struggled to consistently move the ball. And both sides had a lot to do with 10 penalties that impaired their ability to do much of anything.

The optimistic will say they still had a chance to pull out a victory.

“We can learn from this as we move forward. I’ve got to make sure I get my team in a better state there coming out, playing with more emotion. We were a little flat that first half, and that cost us,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said after the 27-21 loss Friday night.

“There were some good things in there, but, again, we’ve got to make sure we take care of business.”

There isn't a whole lot of time. The Chiefs have a Super Bowl rematch with the Philadelphia Eagles up next.

The matchup with the Chargers in Sao Paulo went awry right from the start, when wide receiver Xavier Worthy hurt his shoulder in a collision with teammate Travis Kelce. The Chiefs already were playing without Rashee Rice, who is suspended for the first six games of the season, leaving them without two of their best playmakers in the passing game.

No wonder it took Patrick Mahomes until the second half to get going.

By then, the Chiefs were playing from behind.

“I think it's a learning moment, especially for the young guys on the team,” Mahomes said. “We’re going to get everybody’s best and we have to play up to that standard if we want to win football games. I feel we didn’t play to that standard.”

To be sure: The Chiefs have high standards. They have won nine consecutive AFC West titles, though they are suddenly 0-1 in the division. They have made seven consecutive AFC title games. They have played in the past three Super Bowls.

They also haven't started 0-2 in a season since 2014 — Reid's second season and the most recent time they failed to make the playoffs.

“You're looking at the first game of the season, and you can't judge the team's success by one game or even one particular play,” Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones said.

“We have 16 more opportunities to get better. We’re going to watch, make some corrections, fix some errors. I think it was self-inflicted errors — offside, roughing the passers, multiple times we shot ourselves in the foot. Some self-inflicted wounds that we can fix, detail that up and I think we can improve in that aspect.”

One of the big questions facing the Kansas City defense was whether it could stop the run, especially against a team that excels on the ground. It wound up holding the Chargers to just 90 yards on 25 carries, or 3.6 yards per attempt.

As good as the Chiefs were against the run, they were lousy against the pass. Herbert was 25 of 34 for 318 yards and three TDs, and he was rarely under pressure. And when he was flushed from the pocket, he was able to scramble for positive yardage.

Chiefs wide receiver Marquise Brown had 10 catches for 99 yards, helping atone for an early third down drop while making up for Worthy's absence. He was hurt on their first preseason play last season and didn't return until late in the season, so the Chiefs have waited a long time to see “Hollywood” have a real impact on a game.

Right tackle Jawaan Taylor was called for two holdings penalties and two false starts, costing the Chiefs offense 30 yards when it was struggling mightily to move the ball. He was the NFL's second-most penalized player last season.

The Chiefs hope to learn more about Worthy's shoulder injury when he undergoes an MRI exam in Kansas City.

57 — Mahomes led the Chiefs in rushing with more than half of their 98 yards on the ground.

The Chiefs face the Eagles on Sept. 14 at Arrowhead Stadium.

Returning MIAA champion Emily Diercks won the individual title with a time of 18:11.1, six seconds faster than her nearest competition. The senior defeated 20 NCAA Division I runners in the process.

Ashlyn Harbaugh also cracked the top 10 in the 116-competitor field, placing ninth with a time of 18:58.1. Emma Weiner navigated the five-kilometer course in 19:18.8 to finish in 12th place, while Taylor Hoskinson crossed the line in 14th place with a time of 19:23.7. Freshman Esther Clark-Pavlovich made her Tiger debut with a 16th-place finish, completing the race in 19:30.5.

Division I Oklahoma won the team competition with 29 points after placing six runners in the top 11. The Tigers defeated three conference opponents in the process, including Washburn (fourth), Emporia State (seventh) and Newman (eighth).

HILL CITY - For the first time in a decade, Trego walked away victorious against Hill City.&nbsp;

The Golden Eagles snapped an 11 game losing streak to the Ringnecks with a 30-20 win on Friday night at Ringneck Stadium, giving their senior class its first-ever win over Hill City and moving to 1-0 on the season.

Trego opened the game strong after forcing a three and out, marching 39 yards in four and a half minutes and finishing with a 4 yard touchdown run by Jack Conness. The two-point conversion made it 8-0. Hill City responded with a long drive that ended on downs, but answered in the second quarter with quarterback Tate Balthazor's 2 yard scoring run to tie the game at 8.

The second quarter featured 30 combined points and several momentum swings. Trego's Westyn Windholz picked off Balthazor and returned it 14 yards for a touchdown to put the Golden Eagles ahead 16-8. Moments later, a Hill City fumble by Vincent Zohner set up a 50 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Ashton Wynn to Conness, extending the lead to 24-8.

Hill City struck back quickly, as Balthazor connected with Jaxson Smith for a 61 yard touchdown two plays later to close the gap to 24-14 at halftime.

The third quarter stalled with penalties, especially on Hill City, which had two big plays called back while Trego maintained its 10-point advantage.

Conness scored his third touchdown of the night on the first play of the fourth quarter, an 8 yard run that stretched the lead to 30-14. Balthazor answered midway through the quarter with a 5 yard touchdown scramble, but his two point conversion pass was intercepted in the end zone, leaving the Ringnecks down 30-20.

Hill City's defense forced a punt on Trego's next possession, but the Golden Eagles returned the favor, stopping Hill City on downs with under five minutes left. Wynn sealed the game with a third down scramble inside the Hill City 20, allowing Trego to kneel out the win.

Conness finished with 42 rushing yards and two touchdowns on the ground, plus a 50 yard receiving touchdown. Wynn threw for 90 yards and a score on 6 of 9 passing while rushing for 47 yards.

Balthazor led Hill City (0-1) with 150 yards passing, one touchdown and one interception, while adding 54 yards and two scores on the ground. Smith caught two passes for 69 yards and a touchdown.

The win was a measure of revenge for Trego, which saw its 2024 season end at the hands of Hill City in a 34-28 week 9 loss.

DERBY&nbsp; - The Hays High Indians kicked off their 2025 season with a state ranked showdown in Derby on Friday night. Hays entered ranked #4 in class 5A while the Panthers started the year ranked #1 in 6A. The Indians became just the third 5A team since 2012 to beat the Panthers on their home field, taking a 22-21 victory.

Hays held on to the first drive of the game for five and a half minutes to score. Holden Lind capped the 13 play 77 yard drive with a 27 yard touchdown run.

The Indians held the lead through the first quarter by allowing Derby to run just seven plays of offense. The Panthers scored on a 57 yard touchdown pass on the first play of the second quarter to tie the game up at seven. Derby took the lead after a failed fourth down and one attempt by the Indians gave the Panthers the football just 16 yards from pay dirt.&nbsp;

Derby fumbled the ball at the goal line four plays later but it was recovered in the end zone for six points. The point after boosted Derby to a 14-7 lead with 3:26 remaining in the second quarter.

Derby faced 1st and 30 when they rushed for 29 yards. The very next play the Panthers made the score 21-7 with a 38 yard pass and PAT. It was the last points Derby scored.Hays answered right back with a 7 play 65 yard drive. Lind once again crossed into the end zone on a 26 yard run for a 21-14 scored following a Carson Moore PAT.The Indian defense held the Panthers silent, allowing Hays to start in Derby territory on four straight possessions. The Indians though couldn't take advantage and still trailed 21-14. The Hays defense again kept Derby under control forcing a punt. The Indians took over at their own four yard line with 3:30 left on the clock.Hays embarked on their game winning drive that ate up 2:25 of what was left in the game. Zane Viegra found Braxton Basgall for a four yard touchdown to pull the Indians with a point.
