LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Freshman Darryn Peterson scored 21 points in 22 minutes in his debut to lead No. 19 Kansas past Green Bay 94-51 in the season opener for both teams Monday night.

Peterson shot 7 of 11 from the field, including 3 for 7 from 3-point range, before sitting most of the second half.

Kansas' Flory Bidunga led all scorers with 23 points on 9-of-11 shooting from the field and 5-of-6 sniping from the line. Melvin Council added 10 points for Kansas, which was 33 of 58 from the field (56.9%).

Green Bay was led by Marcus Hall's 17 points.

The Jayhawks, who led by 21 points at the break, put any thoughts of a Green Bay comeback to rest by scoring the first seven points of the second half. The Jayhawks extended their lead throughout the second half and their final 43-point margin was their largest of the game.

Peterson made an impact early. His first bucket, a 3-pointer from the top of the key at the 18:31 mark, put Kansas in front and the Jayhawks never looked back. He also had two steals before the first media timeout. He finished the first half with 18 points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Bidunga picked up his second foul with 6:44 left, which earned him a spot on the bench. He finished the half with 16 points. He was 6 for 6 from the field and 4 for 4 from the line.

The Jayhawks were 17 of 29 from the field in the first half, and missed 11 of their 14 3-point attempts. They still led 48-27 at intermission.

Green Bay was led by C.J. O’Hara's nine points before halftime. The Phoenix hit just 34.6% of their shots.

Kansas: At No. 25 North Carolina on Friday.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs have proven this season that they can beat just about anybody when they're playing their best.

They can lose quite easily when they are not.

It's a marked difference from past years, when Kansas City could overcome penalties, dropped passes and other miscues to win anyway. The Chiefs went 15-2 last season largely because they were able to stay in games they had no business winning, but the good fortune has not carried over; they find themselves 5-4 after a 28-21 loss in Buffalo on Sunday.

“We've had great moments and we've had bad moments,” Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes said. "We've got to be more consistent as a team. I've got to be more consistent at quarterback. We've got to be able to battle.

“We've been in a lot of these types of close games in our history, and they are not going our way now. So how can we deal with that adversity? How can we be better and learn from it? You can only learn from so many losses."

The game against the Bills marked a fitting bookend to the first half of the season for Kansas City, because it bared a close resemblance to its season opener in Brazil. In that one, the Chiefs played similarly poorly, had to deal with injuries that popped up during the game and still had a chance at the end, only for their defense to come up short when it needed a stop.

Indeed, health is becoming a problem for the Chiefs again, especially along the offensive line.

They hope to get first-round draft pick Josh Simmons back at some point, but the talented left tackle has been away from the team to deal with a family situation for several weeks. Then, against Buffalo, right tackle Jawaan Taylor hurt his ankle, and for a moment, left guard Kingsley Suamataia also left the game, leaving Kansas City with a patchwork offensive line.

Throw in a sprained knee ligament that sidelined running back Isiah Pacheco, and it was hardly a surprise that the Chiefs only managed to match their second-lowest point total this season; they scored 17 in a loss against Philadelphia.

“We've got to do a little better than that, obviously, when we're playing a good football team,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. “It starts with me, doing my job better, putting guys in good position there to make some plays.”

Now the Chiefs are in a strange position: If the playoffs happened this week, they would be on the outside looking in.

Instead of fighting for the No. 1 seed down the stretch, they are forced to fight for any seed they can get.

“It's going to be an uphill battle when we get back,” Mahomes said, “but I think our guys are up to it.”

The Chiefs are getting what they hoped from their wide receiver triumvirate of Rashee Rice, Xavier Worthy and Marquise Brown.

Worthy missed time after hurting his shoulder in the opener against the Chargers, and Rice missed six games while serving an NFL suspension for violating the league's personal conduct policy. But since the three of them have been available, they have managed to kick-start an offense that until this past Sunday had begun to resemble the Reid-and-Mahomes offenses of yesteryear.

The Kansas City defensive line has been pushed around far too often this season, and it may have had its worst game yet against the Bills, when James Cook ran for 114 yards and Josh Allen kept sneaking into the end zone for touchdowns.

Defensive back Trent McDuffie is going to cost the Chiefs a fortune when the two sides agree to a contract extension. He's been the best player on defense all season, and he capped the first half of the year with 12 tackles and a sack against Buffalo.

Defensive tackle Chris Jones has just two sacks through nine games, putting one of the NFL's highest-paid players on pace for his least-productive season in that department since his rookie year, when he was a part-time starter in 2016.

The Chiefs hope to get Pacheco and Taylor back after the bye.

5 - That's the number of losses in six regular-season games against Buffalo that Mahomes has started since the 2019 season. It also is the number of losses combined that Kansas City has in 35 games against the AFC West.

The Chiefs have a week to get healthy before visiting Denver on Nov. 16. They are just 1-3 on the road this season.

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Fort Hays State Women's Wrestling had a solid start to the 2025-26 season with three champions and 15 placers out of its 25 wrestlers competing at the Maverick Open. Champions for the Tigers were Kennedy Farrar at 103, Peyton Hellmann at 138, and Isabella Renfro at 180. For placers, the Tigers had five finish in second place, three in third place, three in fifth place, and one in sixth place.

Farrar, Hellmann, and Renfro all went 4-0 for the day to win their respective classes. Farrar (103) and Renfro (180) were impressive, both not allowing a point to opponents all throughout the tournament. Farrar had two 10-0 tech falls and two falls (0:32 and 1:27) where she was up 8-0 and 7-0 when she scored the pins. Renfro also did not have to go beyond the first period for her wins, recording three falls and one tech fall. Her falls were recorded in 1:15, 1:06, and 1:09, and the 10-0 tech fall was right before the horn at the end of the first period.

Hellmann recorded pins in her first two matches of the day, one at 5:39 and the other at 2:09, before recording 9-2 and 5-2 decisions for the win at 138. She had to defeat teammate Ashlynn Goodwin in the final, one of FHSU's five second place finishers. It was the first collegiate tournament as Tigers for Hellmann and Farrar.

Goodwin (138) recorded three falls before meeting Hellmann in the final, finishing 3-1 for the day. Leiannah Landreth scored a pair of tech falls and a fall on her way to the championship match at 117, but she was on the short end of a close 11-10 decision to Kinzie Williams of Sublime Wrestling Academy in the final and also finished 3-1 for the day. Addison Broxterman posted a 4-1 record for the day at 131, recording a tech fall and three falls before a loss by fall to Hania Halverson in the championship. Josie Houk went 3-1 for the day at 160 with a pair of tech falls and a fall before losing by fall to Katie Law of Utah Tech in the championship. Hailey Conley went 2-1 for the day with a fall and tech fall before losing by fall to Jayleen Sekona of Colorado Mesa in the 207 championship match.

Third-place finishers for the Tigers included Morgan Maschmann (124), Dylen Ritchey (145), and Grace Johns (207). Maschmann battled all the way back from an opening round loss to go 5-1 for the day, recording four tech falls and a fall. Ritchey also went 5-1 for the day, recording a pair of tech falls, a pair of decisions, and a fall. Johns went 4-1 for the day with a pair of tech falls, a fall, and a decision. All three lost to the eventual champions of their classes.

Jaidyn Alvarado (103), Isabella Cross (110), and Kaylee Ricketts (160) all placed fifth. Cross was 4-2 for the day, while Alvarado and Ricketts were both 3-2. Alexis Burton was the lone sixth-place finisher for FHSU, picking up two wins for the day.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. and third baseman Maikel Garcia were named winners of 2025 Rawlings Gold Glove Awards, as announced tonight by Rawlings Sporting Goods Inc. on ESPN’s Baseball Tonight.

The Rawlings Gold Glove Awards honor the best individual fielding performances at each position in the American League and National League. Winners were chosen by a combination of votes from MLB Managers and coaches, and the SABR Defensive Index.

This is Witt Jr.’s second straight Rawlings Gold Glove Award and Garcia’s first. The Royals now have 42 Rawlings Gold Glove winners by 18 different players. Over the last 15 seasons since 2011, the Royals lead Major League Baseball with 24 Rawlings Gold Glove Awards.

Witt Jr. is the first two-time Rawlings Gold Glove winner at shortstop in Royals history, and is the first American League shortstop to win the award in consecutive seasons since Andrelton Simmons with the Angels from 2017-18.

Witt Jr., 25, made 153 starts at shortstop in 2025, 3rd most in the American League. He ranked 2nd among AL shortstops in assists (382) and fielding percentage (.983), and he was charged with just 10 errors in 578 chances, 2nd fewest among AL shortstops (min. 125 starts).

Witt Jr. tied for the Major League lead among all players in 2025 with 24 Outs Above Average, according to Baseball Savant. Witt Jr.’s 18 Runs Prevented ranked 3rd in the Majors to Pete Crow-Armstrong (22) and Ceddanne Rafaela (19). Baseball Savant’s Fielding Run Value ranked Witt Jr. 5th among all defenders (20) and 1st among shortstops.

Garcia is the second Royals third baseman to win a Rawlings Gold Glove, joining George Brett in 1985.

Garcia, 25, ranked 3rd among American League third basemen with 130 starts, but ranked 1st in total chances (346), putouts (105) and fielding percentage (.980). He was charged with just 7 errors in his 346 chances at third base, fewest among American League players at the position (min. 125 starts). He committed only 1 error in his final 75 games at third base from June 25 through season’s end.

Garcia ranked 4th among all American League players with 17 Outs Above Average, and his 18 OAA as a third basemen led all players at the position in the American League, well ahead of 2nd-place José Ramírez (7) and Ernie Clement (7). Baseball Savant’s Fielding Run Value metric also ranked Garcia 1st among American League third basemen (14), ahead of Ramírez (6).

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — Josh Allen threw a touchdown pass and ran for two scores to outduel Patrick Mahomes and the Buffalo Bills defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 28-21 on Sunday in a rematch of last season’s AFC championship game.

James Cook had 114 yards rushing and Buffalo’s defense did the rest in harassing Mahomes, who was sacked three times, hit 15 more and finished with the worst completion percentage of his career.

The game was decided in the final 17 seconds, when Mahomes threw three straight incompletions from Buffalo’s 40. The last throw fell short of the end zone and was batted down by rookie Maxwell Hairston. The drive began at Kansas City's 42 after Matt Prater's 52-yard field goal attempt for the Bills struck the right upright.

Allen was 23 of 26 for 273 yards for Buffalo, which improved to 6-2 and has won two straight since losing consecutive games. The Bills have defeated Kansas City in five straight regular-season meetings, but are 0-4 in playoff matchups dating to the 2020 postseason — including last season's AFC title game.

The Chiefs (5-4) had a three-game win streak snapped after winning five of their last six.

Mahomes, who entered having passed for three touchdowns in each of his past three outings, finished 15 of 34 for 250 yards and no scores and an interception.

Mahomes, a two-time NFL MVP, had previously never finished a regular-season outing completing fewer than 50% of his passes over his nine-year career. His previous low was going 19 of 38 for 159 yards in a 21-7 win at Cleveland on Dec. 15.

Rashee Rice scored on a 3-yard run and Kareem Hunt had a 2-yard run to account for the Chiefs’ two touchdowns. Mahomes did convert a 2-point play with a completion to Travis Kelce, while Harrison Butker made field goals from 19 and 46 yards.

Allen opened the scoring with a 23-yard TD pass to Dalton Kincaid — the seventh time Buffalo has scored a touchdown on its opening drive this season. The quarterback also scored on a pair of 1-yard runs in an outing during which the teams traded leads twice.

After the Chiefs built a 10-7 lead on Butker’s 46-yarder 5 1/2 minutes into the second quarter, the Bills responded by scoring touchdowns on their next two possessions.

Ty Johnson capped a five-play 70-yard drive with a 3-yard run for the go-ahead score.

The Chiefs then gave up the ball on downs at Buffalo’s 40 when Cole Bishop broke up a pass attempt to Rice on fourth-and-3. Allen then marched Buffalo on a seven-play, 60-yard drive that he capped with the first of two touchdowns.

Allen’s TD run was the 78th of his career, including the playoffs, breaking the NFL record for quarterbacks he shared with Cam Newton. With his three TDs, Allen has 282 (passing and rushing), moving ahead of Mahomes for second among players before the age of 30. Allen, who turns 30 in May, now trails only Peyton Manning (288).

🏈Allen has 3 TDs and Bills use sturdy defense to top Mahomes and Chiefs 

HAYS, Kan. — Fort Hays State (3-11-2, 1-8-2) played to a 1-1 draw with Rogers State (2-7-7, 2-5-4) on Sunday at FHSU Soccer Stadium. FHSU collected its goal early on a penalty kick opportunity, while the Hillcats scored their goal inside the final three minutes to earn the draw.

Fort Hays State took the lead in the ninth minute when Jordyn Bredenberg drew a penalty in the box and Chaley French scored her penalty kick opportunity. Sydney Cotter was active offensively throughout the match with seven shots. She came close to adding a second goal for the Tigers a couple of times in the match, but unfortunately FHSU's one goal would not hold up.

Rogers State capitalized late when Kenzie Macklin scored in the 88th minute off a quick throw in and crossing pass, equalizing the match at 1-1. Te Waiariki Read and Brooke Hartshorn provided the assists.

The Tigers produced 13 shots in the match, compared to just four for the Hillcats. The Tigers played three of their goalkeepers, Jamie Kerkvliet, Tatum Hoge, and Hadley Ostrander. Hoge had a save in her 13-plus minutes of action. Calais Butts had three saves for RSU, playing the entire match.

Fort Hays State will host its final home match of the regular season against Nebraska-Kearney on Wednesday, Nov. 5, at 7 p.m. in Hays.

HOUSTON (AP) — Bo Nix knows Sunday's win over the Houston Texans wasn't pretty.

That seems to be a theme with several of Denver's wins lately and their quarterback is perfectly fine with that.

“It proves that we can win tough games and it proves that our mentality can adjust to where we expect to find ways to win,” Nix said. “It’s a really good issue to have is when you’re finding these ugly wins.”

Nix threw two touchdown passes and Wil Lutz made a 34-yard field goal as time expired and the Broncos rallied for an 18-15 victory Sunday to extend their winning streak to six games.

“We did just enough things to come out of here with a win,” coach Sean Payton said.

That's been the case with many of Denver's games in this streak, with four of them coming by four or fewer points. They improved to 4-0 this season in games where they trailed entering the fourth quarter.

The Broncos (7-2) had punted three times in a row before a 25-yard scramble by Nix got them to their 39 with less than a minute to go.

“We wanted to move the pocket and get a new launch point, change up the pace for those edge guys,” Nix said. “And we got out on the end and felt like everybody was running over there for the pass and there just ended up being a good lane. And I finally got to use my legs there at the end."

J.K. Dobbins followed with a 9-yard scamper and a 9-yard run by Nix two plays after that set up the game-winning field goal.

Nix couldn’t do much in the first three quarters against Houston’s top-ranked defense, but RJ Harvey’s 27-yard TD reception and Troy Franklin’s 2-point conversion grab tied it at 15-all early in the fourth quarter.

C.J. Stroud sustained a concussion when he was hit at the end of a slide early in the first quarter. Ka’imi Fairbairn tied a career-high with five field goals, but the Texans struggled to move the ball with Davis Mills at quarterback after Stroud’s injury.

They punted six consecutive times after a field goal made it 15-7 on their first possession of the second half.

“Disappointed as a team that we didn’t finish the game,” coach DeMeco Ryans said. “The defense, they did a good job of getting stops multiple times. We just sputtered there offensively, we lacked just being able to move the ball. We lacked just being able sustain drives there in the second half. It just wasn’t good enough.”

Mills was 17 of 30 for 137 yards as the Texans fell to 3-5. Houston was 0 of 3 in the red zone and converted just 3 of 17 third downs.

Nix 18 of 37 for 173 yards with an interception.

The Broncos were down by six when Courtland Sutton's 30-yard touchdown grab gave them a 7-6 lead about five minutes before halftime.

Houston regained the lead with a 38-yard field goal with less than two minutes left in the first half.

Michael Bandy fumbled a punt with about 40 seconds left in the second quarter and it was recovered by Jaylin Smith. Houston cashed in on the error with a 40-yard field goal to push the lead to 12-7 at halftime.

Harvey had five catches for 51 yards and his score made him the first rookie to have a touchdown catch in three straight games in franchise history.

Nico Collins had seven catches for 75 yards for Houston after sitting out last week recovering from a concussion

The Texans had a first down on the 1 on their second drive. But Nick Chubb was stopped on first down and British Brooks was stuffed on the next two plays before a false start penalty on fourth down forced Houston to settle for a field goal to make it 3-0.

Stroud was injured on the next possession. He scrambled for 6 yards and was hit on the shoulder near the end of his slide by Kris Abrams-Draine and the back of his head violently bounced off the turf.

Calen Bullock intercepted Nix on Denver’s ensuing possession to give the Texans the ball near midfield. Collins had a 26-yard reception to get that drive going and a 10-yard catch a few plays later gave them a first down at the 2.

But the Texans couldn’t do anything after that and a sack of Mills on third down left them to settle for another field goal to push the lead to 6-0.

Fairbairn missed from 51 on Houston’s first drive.

Denver: Star cornerback Pat Surtain II missed the first of what is expected to be several games with a pectoral strain. … DB J.T. Gray left in the third quarter with a hamstring injury. … WR Trent Sherfield injured his knee in the third.

Texans: LB Christian Harris missed the second half with a shin injury. … OL Tytus Howard left in the first half to be evaluated for a concussion. … DE Darrell Taylor injured his ankle in the third quarter.

Marcedes Lewis made history Sunday, when at age 41 he became the oldest tight end to ever play in an NFL game. When he entered the game on the fourth snap of Denver’s first drive he also became the oldest player to appear in a game in franchise history. Lewis, who was signed Wednesday, is the second-oldest active player in the NFL behind Aaron Rodgers, who will turn 42 in December.

Denico Autry blocked a 51-yard field-goal attempt by Lutz on Denver’s first drive. It’s the 13th blocked kick of his career, tying Julius Peppers for the second most in the NFL since 1991.

Broncos: Denver hosts Las Vegas on Thursday night.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Jalon Daniels led four second-half touchdown drives as Kansas overcame a sluggish first half to trounce Oklahoma State 38-21 on Saturday. Kansas (5-4, 3-3 Big 12) snapped a two-game losing streak.

“We (only) had 10 points (in the first half), but we scored on both possessions,” Kansas coach Lance Leipold said. “We just didn’t get off the field. It was a very fast first half.

"I think we established a little better running game in the second half, that gave us the balance that we needed.”

Daniels said it was just a matter of sticking with the game plan, and a fierce effort by the offensive line.

“Hats off to big old offensive linemen,” Daniels said. “They played a pivotal role in today’s game. Then the running backs doing everything that they can to gain every single inch, every single yard. And I think that just goes to show the resilience of our team.”

Zane Flores was 22-of-28 passing for 235 yards and two touchdowns for Oklahoma State (1-8, 0-6 Big 12), which lost its eighth straight game and 15th straight Big 12 game.

“It’s hard to pinpoint a moment when it went bad,” Oklahoma State interim coach Doug Meacham said. “It could be the field goal block (at the end of the first half). We could have gone in with some momentum. It’s just that fine of a line.

“What we have to do a better job of is when things don’t go the way we want them to, we have to put them to bed.”

Kansas took the second-half kickoff and went 75 yards in 10 plays to open up a two-score lead. Daniels hit Boden Groen in the back of the end zone for a 3-yard touchdown.

After an OSU three-and-out, Daniels found Bryson Canty for a 5-yard touchdown pass and a 24-7 lead. A Flores-to-Gavin Freeman’s 10-yard touchdown pass drew the Cowboys within 24-14, but Kansas answered with 3-yard and 5-yard touchdown runs by Daniel Hishaw Jr. and Leshon Williams, respectively.

Daniels handed the ball to Williams on the last 10 plays on the drive.

“I don’t remember the last time that I’ve done that,” Daniels said. “But the more and more I got every single play call, I’m like, ‘Okay, let’s go.’

Oklahoma State went 75 yards on 10 plays on the opening drive, taking a 7-0 lead on a Flores 12-yard pass to Shamar Rigby. Kansas responded with a 13-play drive, but stalled in the red zone, settling for a 39-yard Laith Marjan field goal.

OSU then held the ball for 14 plays on its next possession, but missed a 44-yard field goal attempt, giving the ball — and the momentum — back to Kansas. Kansas marched 73 yards in 15 plays for the go-ahead score. Hishaw bounced off a couple of defenders before scampering in from the 3-yard line.

OSU’s 19-yard field goal attempt was blocked to end the half.

Oklahoma State: The Cowboys struggled in all three phases, including missing two makeable field goals.

Kansas: The Jayhawks can still reach a bowl. They need one victory in their next three games: at Arizona and Iowa State and against Utah.

Oklahoma State hosts Kansas State Nov. 15.

Kansas will travel to face Arizona on Saturday.

SEARCY, Ark. — Fort Hays State set a new program record for consecutive matches unbeaten, running its streak to 17 matches on Saturday in a 5-0 win over Harding at the Stevens Soccer Complex. The result also extended the best start without a loss in program history. The No. 4 ranked Tigers are now 14-0-3 overall and 10-0-1 in the GAC, while Harding moved to 2-12-2 overall and 0-9-1 in the GAC.

The Tigers spread the scoring love around on Saturday as five different players scored. The 17-match unbeaten streak topped the 16-match run by the 2018 squad.

The Tigers had ample offensive opportunities, outshooting the Bisons 33-5. The Tigers had a 17-4 shot advantage in the first half, then 16-1 in the second half. FHSU placed 15 of the 33 shots on goal as Harding had to save 10 shots to prevent further damage.

Fort Hays State dominated the first half, taking a commanding 3-0 lead by halftime. Dimitry Tchantcheu opened the scoring in the 18th minute with an assist from Jackson Elgas, setting the tone for the Tigers. A penalty kick goal by Tadhg Walsh in the 33rd minute extended the advantage, followed by a goal from Federico Heinrich in the 44th minute. Mamadou Oumar Ndiaye and Tonnes Daland both assisted on the third goal.

Fort Hays State kept the offensive train rolling in the second half with two more goals. Joseph Street found the net in the 63rd minute, assisted by Juan Linares. Ndiaye capped the scoring with a goal in the 89th minute, assisted by Lucas Garay.

The Tigers will wrap up the regular season on Thursday night (Nov. 6) at Newman University. The contest will be at 7 p.m. in Wichita. FHSU has already locked the GAC regular season title and hosting rights for the conference tournament on Nov. 13 and 15.

⚽ Tigers roll past Harding, set new program record for unbeaten streak

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Behren Morton threw for 249 yards and two touchdowns in his return from an injury, J'Koby Williams ran for 135 yards and a score, and No. 13 Texas Tech romped past sloppy, mistake-prone Kansas State 43-20 on Saturday.

Cameron Dickey also had a touchdown run for the Red Raiders (8-1, 5-1 Big 12), who forced five turnovers while snapping an eight-game losing streak against the Wildcats (4-5, 3-3) with their first win in Manhattan since the 2008 season.

“That was a huge win,” said Texas Tech coach Joey McGuire, who arrived for his postgame news conference wearing a T-shirt with a photo of former Kansas State linebacker-turned-Red Raiders athletic director Kirby Hocutt across the front of it.

“This is no disrespect to K-State,” McGuire said. “It's a tip of my hat to my AD who played linebacker here, and it's been a long time since we beat Kansas State. ... I know it was a big win for him and a huge win for this team.”

Texas Tech is off to its best start in conference play since that year, when Mike Leach guided the team to the Cotton Bowl.

“Winning the turnover battle is a huge thing for us," said Texas Tech linebacker Jacob Rodriguez, the preseason Big 12 defensive player of the year, who forced two of the fumbles. "And we knew we had to do that to win.”

Avery Johnson threw for 199 yards and a touchdown while running for 86 and two more scores. But Kansas State's quarterback also threw two interceptions and was responsible for a late fumble that Texas Tech returned for a touchdown.

Along with the slew of turnovers, the Wildcats also were 0 for 4 on fourth down.

“I thought our guys battled on defense,” Kansas State coach Chris Klieman said. "We just didn’t have enough.”

Morton, who had been out of the lineup with a leg injury, opened the game with an interception of his own. But Johnson threw a pick right back, and it was the beginning of a messy first half in which both failed on fourth down, Kansas State lost a fumble and Texas Tech nearly did the same.

The Red Raiders eventually made Kansas State pay for its mistakes, though.

They turned a fumble by Jayce Brown into a touchdown to take a 9-7 lead. They turned a three-and-out late in the first half into a 55-yard field goal. And they turned another fumble, this time from Garrett Oakley on the fourth play of the second half, into a 41-yard run by Williams that silenced the crowd and gave Texas Tech a 19-7 lead.

“Some things happened that absolutely can’t happen when you play a team like that,” Klieman said.

Johnson tried to answer with his second TD run for Kansas State, but Texas Tech's offense kept on going. Stone Harrington drilled another field goal and Caleb Douglas hauled in a short touchdown throw to make it 29-14 heading into the fourth quarter.

Texas Tech's defense took care of the rest.

After the Wildcats scored with 12:44 to go, the Red Raiders stopped the 2-point try to keep it a two-score game. Later in the quarter, they stuffed Johnson for a loss on fourth down near midfield. And when the Texas Tech offense fumbled the ball right back, the Red Raiders again stopped the Wildcats on fourth down with less than 6 minutes to go.

Texas Tech linebacker John Curry returned Johnson's fumble for a touchdown with 4:52 left to put the game away.

“I’m really, really proud of the way we handled adversity today," Morton said. “We got down and we fought back.”

Texas Tech hardly played a clean game — the turnovers hurt, as did some penalties. But with Morton back under center, the Red Raiders were able to overcome them against a team that was coming off an emotional win over rival Kansas.

Kansas State simply made too many mistakes, and not just the turnovers and penalties. Brown and Oakley dropped passes at key points in the game, the latter when the Wildcats turned it over on downs late in the fourth quarter.

Texas Tech returns home to play No. 10 BYU next Saturday.

Kansas State is off before visiting Oklahoma State on Nov. 15.

HAYS, Kan. - Central Missouri scored two fourth quarter touchdowns to erase a 17-point deficit late in the third quarter and beat Fort Hays State 28-24 Saturday afternoon at Lewis Field. The win snapped the Mules (4-5, 4-3 MIAA) five-game losing streak in Hays and was their first win at Lewis Field since 2012.

The Tigers (5-5, 4-4 MIAA) held a 10-0 lead at halftime and were up 24-7 with 1:30 to play in the third quarter before the Mules scored the final 21 points including the go-ahead touchdown with 50 seconds to play to cap a 99-yard drive that ate up over five minutes.

Fort Hays State moved the ball to the UCM 38 on their final possession but Caleb Heavner's last second pass was intercepted at the goal line.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Tigers broke through with a 37-yard field goal from David Arriaga on the first possession of the second quarter . FHSU took advantage of a kick catch interference penalty to set up a short field and grabbed a 10-0 lead following a Caleb Heavner 5-yard touchdown run with 8:06 to play until halftime.

The Mules were held to only 60 yards of offense in the first half but they came to life on their first possession of the third quarter with a 13-yard touchdown run from freshman running back Jayden Lang which capped a 12-play, 70-yard drive.

The Tigers immediately answered. Caleb Heavner broke free for a 77-yard run which set up a 1-yard touchdworn run from Curtis Douglas to push the lead to 17-7. Heavner connected with Keyshawn Dooley for a&nbsp;55-yard touchdown pass on the next possession which pushed their lead to 24-7.

The Mules began their comeback three plays later when quarterback Donovyn Omolo hit Aazeryuan Voss on a 63-yard touchdown pass laste in the third.. FHSU went 3-and-out on the next possession and the Mules drove 74 yards, capped by an 11-yard touchdown pass from Omolo to Hogan Wasson with 10:37 to play.

The Tigers reached the UCM 43-yard line on their next possession but had to punt. Logan Russell pinned UCM at their own 1-yard line but the Mules drove 99 yards in 13 plays capped by an 8-yard touchdown pass to Wasson, his second of the quarter, to take their first lead of the game.

Central Missouri produced 324 or their 384 yards in the second half. FHSU finished with 366 yards, 208 on the ground led by Heavner's career-high 144, the second straight 100-yard game for the signal caller. The Tigers had won 29-straight when rushing for 200 or more yards.

John Johnson recorded 17 tackles to become the first Tiger to record 100 or more in a season since 2018. Matt McBride had his first career interception. Johnson, Gaven Haselhorst, Jakolbi Wilson, Kayson Dietz and Jack Hileman all recorded sacks.

The Tigers will have next Saturday off before closing out the season at Emporia State on Saturday, November 15. Kickoff will be a 1 p.m. at Welch Stadium.
