HAYS – Dodge City scored five runs in the third inning and handed the Hays Larks their first loss of the season, 5-2, Sunday night at Larks Park.
The loss snapped the Larks' 16-game winning streak to open the season and ended the team's 23-game home winning streak, the longest in the current era of Hays summer collegiate baseball.
The Larks drew nine walks and struck out 14 Dodge City batters but could only must two runs in the sixth inning.
The A's (9-10-1, 7-7 RMBL) broke through in the third inning. A one-out single and back-to-back walks loaded the bases before four consecutive hits - three singles and a triple - produced all five runs.
The Larks (16-1, 12-1 RMBL) answered with two runs in the sixth. Cade Green scored on a wild pitch after Hays loaded the bases with a hit batter and two walks. Following another walk to reload the bases and a strikeout for the second out of the inning, Brayden Huebner was hit by a pitch to force in the second run. A groundout ended the rally, leaving the bases loaded.
Sammy Frederick (0-1) took the loss, allowing four runs on six hits while walking four and striking out four over 2 2/3 innings.
Brand Wilson and Taber Stokes each collected two of the Larks' five hits.
