KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs are downplaying a pair of emotional on-field outbursts, including one that involved star tight end Travis Kelce, that marked their season-opening loss to the Los Angeles Chargers in Brazil last week.

The first came when Kelce got into the face of right tackle Jawaan Taylor, who was penalized four times in the 27-21 loss. The second came late in the game, when Kansas City was trying to make a stop and get the ball back, and linebacker Drue Tranquill had words with defensive tackle Chris Jones, who had lost containment and allowed the Chargers to get a first down.

That mistake ultimately allowed Los Angeles to run out the clock.

“It's an emotional game. That's part of it,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Wednesday. “The guys pull for each other, they get after each other. That's all part of it. When guys do good, they jump around. It's all part of it. Time and place for everything.”

Reid would like to see some of that emotion a little earlier in the game.

Reid acknowledged that his team came out flat last Friday night, even though the Chiefs had vowed all offseason that they would bounce back from a lopsided Super Bowl loss to the Philadelphia Eagles — who, by the way, visit Arrowhead Stadium for the rematch Sunday. But rather than come out with a sense of urgency against a division rival, the Chiefs fell into an early 13-3 hole, struggled to deal with Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert and ultimately never led in the game.

“There are no excuses, for any of us, what took place,” Reid said. “We’ve got to do better bringing energy for sure.”

What may be most concerning is that the early effort in Sao Paulo was strikingly similar to the languid way Kansas City started the Super Bowl. In that case, the Chiefs dug a 24-0 halftime hole against Jalen Hurts and the Eagles, and they trailed 34-0 late in the third quarter, before a couple of late touchdowns resulted in a 40-22 final margin.

“You have to learn from the mistakes you make. That's part of playing the game,” Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes said. “You learn from your failures, just like you learn from the positive things you do, and then you come back and play better football this week, and it's going to take our best football to go out there and get a win.”

Mahomes also downplayed last week's on-field disputes among teammates, saying simply: “It's football.”

“It's passionate. We love the game,” he said. "I'd rather have guys that are passionate about it and want to win than the other way around. And we hold each other accountable, and at the end of the day we love each other. And when you have that you can hold each other accountable, and then push forward the next time you step on the field, there's no ill will anywhere.

“It's just a bunch of guys that want to win, and want to do whatever they can to win. And so whenever that happens, sometimes passionate moments — outbursts — stuff happens. At the end of the day, we love each other and we're going to push each other.”

NOTES: WRs Jalen Royals (knee) and Xavier Worthy (shoulder) did not practice Wednesday. Worthy was hurt when he collided with Kelce early in last week's game. “I just gotta be better, man. I’m 13 years in the league. There is no excuse running into my own guys like that,” Kelce said on his “New Heights” podcast. ... Reid said that surgery is not a consideration for Worthy at this point, nor are the Chiefs considering putting him on injured reserve.

The Chicago White Sox announced Tuesday they have called up
Hays native Carson Jacobs to the Birmingham Barons, the Double-A affiliate of
the Chicago White Sox.

Jacobs made his debut with the team on the same day. 

He worked around a walk and struck out the side in an inning
of scoreless relief.

Jacobs had previously appeared in 42 games as a member of
the Winston-Salem Dash, the White Sox’s High-A team in the South Atlantic
League.

He had a 6-5 record with two saves and a 4.61 ERA. 

He amassed 80 strikeouts in 54 2/3 innings with 36 walks.&nbsp;

CLEVELAND (AP) — Joey Cantillo allowed four hits in a career-best eight-plus innings, José Ramírez homered, doubled and scored twice, and the Cleveland Guardians beat the Kansas City Royals 2-0 on Tuesday night for their fifth straight victory.

Cantillo (5-3) struck out five and didn't issue a walk. Cade Smith pitched a scoreless ninth for his 12th save for the Guardians, who entered play 2 1/2 games behind Seattle for the final wild-card spot.

Ramírez, who had three hits, hit a solo homer off Royals starter Noah Cameron (7-6) with two outs in the first. David Fry hit the second of back-to-back to doubles to drive in Ramírez in the fourth.

Cameron, a 26-year-old rookie, gave up two runs on six hits with eight strikeouts in seven innings.

The Guardians, who has won six of seven, beat the Royals&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/royals-guardians-score-5675b3be2eb331410784003369761cfa">10-2</a>&nbsp;in the series opener Monday.

Manhattan won the team title by 30 strokes over Bishop Carroll. The Indians Maddie Myers own the individual title with a 2-under par 68.

Hays High is at the Dodge City Invitational at Mariah Hill Golf Course Thursday.

WARRENSBURG, Mo. – Fort Hays State Men's Golf tied for 13th place as a team at The Mule, hosted by the University of Central Missouri, September 8-9. Cooper Scheck and Jordan McCaslin were the top finishers, tying for 19th individually.

The Tigers were tied for third as a team after the first round when they shot 285 as a team. They followed that with rounds of 292 and 308 to finish.

Scheck's second round was his best of the tournament, shooting a 1-under par 69. He shot a 2-over 72 in the first round and a 6-over 76 in the final round. McCaslin had a big opening round and led the tournament after a 5-under 65. However, he followed with rounds of 74 and 78 and matched Scheck's 7-over total of 217. McCaslin had 11 birdies for the tournament, including seven in the first round, while Scheck had five.

Chutithep Rungpajchim shot rounds of 71, 77 and 75 to tie for 52nd individually. He had three birdies throughout the tournament. Grant McAtee shot rounds of 77, 72, and 82 to tie for 85th, carding five birdies. Colby Hays shot rounds of 78, 79, 79 and had four birdies, finishing in 97th.

Central Oklahoma won the team title by 14 strokes, running away at 14-under par as a team. The Bronchos as a team were 10-under par in the second round. Tournament host Central Missouri finished second at even par as a team. There was a 26-shot gap to the third-place team, Arkansas-Fort Smith. Nick Canales of Central Oklahoma won the tournament individually at 3-under par overall.

⛳ FHSU men tie for 13th at season-opening event in Missouri

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State Men's Soccer moved up one spot in the latest United Soccer Coaches Top 25 Poll, released on Tuesday. The Tigers are ranked No. 22 in the latest poll after a 1-0-1 start to the 2025 season.

The No. 22 Tigers will face No. 3 ranked CSU Pueblo in Hays this Thursday night (Sept. 11) at 6 p.m. The Thunderwolves were a national semifinalist last year and a national finalist the two years prior to that. GOODLAND – The TMP-Marian girls' golf team finished second
at the Goodland Invitational at Sugar Hills Golf Club.

The Monarchs combined to shoot a team score of 401. They
finished 43 shots behind the team champion, Goodland. 

They were four shots better than third-place Syracuse. Colby
finished fourth.

TMP sophomore Brynn Schoepf finished with a 25-over 96 and
finished fifth.

Ava Schumacher shot a 100 and finished tied for sixth.

Jenna Brull was tied for 11th with a 102, and one
shot back and tied for 13th was Emma Wasinger.

The Monarchs will travel to Larned for their next varsity
action on Sept. 18.

CLEVELAND (AP) — Slade Cecconi took a bid to end Cleveland's long no-hitter drought into the eighth inning, and the Guardians rolled to a 10-2 win over Kansas City on Monday night and leapfrogged the Royals in the AL wild-card race.

Cecconi (6-6) was six outs from the first no-hitter in the majors this season — and Cleveland's first since Len Barker's perfect game in 1981 — when Kansas City's Michael Massey singled leading off the eighth.

On Cecconi's 95th pitch, Massey lined a 2-1 fastball into left-center. The right-hander received a nice ovation from the crowd in Progressive Field before Cecconi got Carter Jensen to hit into a double play.

Cleveland (73-70) won its fourth straight game and moved past the Royals (73-71) into second place in the AL Central. Cleveland entered the four-game series 2 1/2 games behind Seattle for the third and final wild card spot.

Kyle Manzardo, Daniel Schneemann and Nolan Jones had two RBIs apiece for Cleveland, which set season highs with 16 hits and seven doubles.

The Guardians tagged Ryan Bergert (2-2) for four RBI doubles and six runs in the fourth inning while opening an 8-0 lead. C.J. Kayfus, Brayan Rocchio, Schneemann and Jones hit the doubles.

Royals All-Star shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. was not in the starting lineup for the third straight game due to back spasms. Manager Matt Quatraro said Witt ran and did some fielding before the game without any issues and was possible to see “game action.”

Witt didn't get in but is expected to play Tuesday.

Second baseman Rocchio made two nice defensive plays to keep Cecconi's bid intact. In the second, he made a diving stop on Salvador Perez's hard shot up the middle. Two innings later, Rocchio slid in the outfield grass to corral Kyle Isbel's grounder before flipping to second for a forceout.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs could be without Xavier Worthy and rookie Jalen Royals because of injuries in a depleted wide receiver group when they face the Philadelphia Eagles in a Super Bowl rematch on Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium.

Worthy hurt his shoulder in the opening minutes of the Chiefs' season-opening loss to the Chargers in Brazil, when he collided with tight end Travis Kelce on a crossing route. Chiefs coach Andy Reid did not provide much of an update on Monday, when he spoke briefly with local reporters, saying only that the team was taking it “day by day.”

“He's rehabbing and working his shoulder,” Reid said, “and we'll just see where it goes. See where we end up.”

Royals, a fourth-round pick, did not practice last week and missed Friday night's game while dealing with a knee injury.

“Jalen is doing a good job with his rehab. We'll just see how that ends up this week,” Reid said. “We've got a couple of days here that we've had. Guys are making good progress. But we'll see where it rolls. If neither (Worthy nor Royals) play, we've got guys that we played with the other night that are good football players.”

Still, the loss of Royals and Worthy would leave Kansas City without three of its primary wide receivers against Philadelphia. Rashee Rice already was serving the second game in his six-game suspension for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy. It is part of his punishment following a March 2024 car crash on a Dallas highway that injured several people.

The Chiefs were hoping that the speedy Worthy would help them deal with Rice's absence early in the season, especially after a breakout rookie season in which he led their wide receivers with 59 catches for 638 yards and six touchdowns.

Instead, Worthy was the victim in a friendly fire incident reminiscent of last season, when Rice tore ligaments in his knee when Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes collided with him while trying to make a tackle following an interception.

“It was just one of those deals. Sometimes that happens,” Reid said. “You hope it doesn't very often, for sure.”

Marquise Brown, who missed most of last season with a shoulder injury, led the Chiefs against Los Angeles with 10 grabs for 99 yards. JuJu Smith-Schuster had five catches for 55 yards and Tyquan Thornton had two for 41 yards.

“Tyquan and Hollywood and JuJu did a great job of filling some of those roles,” Mahomes said after the 27-21 defeat. “That’s someone (in Worthy) that was a huge part of our game plan, and someone that we’re counting on to go out there and make plays against some of the man coverage that they played. I thought guys did a good job kind of stepping up in those roles.”

In other news, Reid tried to sidestep questions about the open-handed slap that Chargers defensive tackle Teair Tart delivered to Kelce in the third quarter. Tart was given a personal foul penalty but, because it was an open-handed punch rather than one that was delivered with a closed fist, the officiating crew allowed him to remain in the game.

“I don't understand that rule. I didn't — you know, I guess it's open-hand, fist, whatever. I don't know all that, what their decision was on that,” Reid said. “He definitely got hit in the head pretty hard, whether it was an open fist or a closed fist.

“I'm not sure how you determine that,” Reid added, “which hurts more.”

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – John Johnson and Taderian Partee of Fort Hays State were two of three individuals named MIAA Football Athletes of the Week on Monday (Sept. 8). Johnson was tabbed the Defensive Athlete of the Week, while Partee was named the Special Teams Athlete of the Week.

John Johnson recorded a team-high 13 tackles in Fort Hays State's one-point win on the road over No. 5/6 ranked CSU Pueblo. It matched the third-highest total in a game for his career, just two shy of his career high. With the game knotted at 29-29, he had a key tackle that kept the Thunderwolves shy of a first down at FHSU's 36 yardline. Moments later the Tigers forced a turnover on downs before driving down the field to score their game-deciding touchdown and extra point.

Defensive lineman Taderian Partee had the big special teams play that secured a one-point win for Fort Hays State on the road over No. 5/6 ranked CSU Pueblo. CSU Pueblo scored a touchdown with 27 seconds remaining to trail by just one, 36-35. Partee blocked the PAT attempt of the Thunderwolves to keep the Tigers in the lead as they went on to secure the onside kick and win the game. Partee also had two tackles in the game on defense. CSU Pueblo was the highest AFCA ranked team the Tigers defeated in their NCAA Division II history.

Johnson and Partee joined Martin Tillman of Missouri Southern (offense) as this week's honorees from the conference office.
