WICHITA, Kan. - The 23rd-ranked Fort Hays State baseball team secured a series win at Newman with a doubleheader sweep Friday at McCarthy Field, winning 8-0 in the opener before taking the nightcap 12-6. The Tigers improved to 29-11 overall and 23-6 MIAA play after taking the series two games to one, while the Jets are now 10-30 on the year and 6-24 in league action.

The Tigers are now tied with Central Missouri atop the MIAA standings with seven games to play in the regular season. FHSU can finish no lower than fourth in the final standings, which would tie its best ever finish since joining the MIAA in 2007 (Fourth in 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011).

Game 1: #23 Fort Hays State 8, Newman 0 Paul Panduro&nbsp;hurled his best game of the season, tossing eight-plus scoreless innings and allowing only two hits. He retired eight in a row in the middle innings and faced the minimum in his final four frames. The senior's sole blemish was six walks, but the righty was able to work out of trouble each time.

Freshman Tony Moore&nbsp;gave the Tigers the early 1-0 lead with a home run in the first plate appearance of the ballgame. Moore then hit his third home run of the series two innings later, making it 2-0 with a leadoff long ball in the top of the third.

After six straight Tigers were retired leading into the fifth inning, Moore again sparked the offense with a walk. Isaiah Ural&nbsp;followed with a single before Trey DeGarmo&nbsp;worked another free base, loading the bases for Jose Cintron who&nbsp;delivered a two-RBI single into left field, doubling the lead to 4-0. Brady Kreutzer&nbsp;&nbsp;kept things rolling with another two-RBI base knock, this time to right field to give the Tigers a 6-0 advantage.

Three more base hits in the seventh inning helped FHSU tack on two more runs. Cintron beat out a bunt single before Kreutzer doubled, putting a pair in scoring position. One run came in to score on an RBI groundout before Cesar Saavedra&nbsp;plated FHSU's eighth run with a single to center.

Panduro (3-3) attempted to finish the complete game shutout before walking a pair in the bottom of the ninth. FHSU then went to Landyn Sterling&nbsp;out of the bullpen, who promptly retired the side in order to complete the win.

Game 2: #23 Fort Hays State 12, Newman 6 Newman grabbed its first lead of the day in the bottom of the second inning with a solo home run, but FHSU quickly responded when Sebastian Burgos&nbsp;doubled to start the third inning. Tony Moore&nbsp;followed with a single before Trey DeGarmo&nbsp;tied the game with an RBI single to center.

The Jets then manufactured another run in the bottom of the third before the Tigers punched back with a four-run fourth inning. Elliott Herrmann&nbsp;got the inning going with a single through the left side before Cooper Howell&nbsp;singled to right. The pair advanced 90 feet on a wild pitch before Herrmann later scored on another wild pitch. Isaiah Ural&nbsp;later plated a run on an RBI groundout before DeGarmo drove in a pair with a two-RBI triple into the gap in left center.

The home team was able to tie the game with a three-run home run in the bottom of the fourth before regaining a 6-5 lead in the bottom of the sixth. Fort Hays State answered back in a big way in the seventh, scoring six runs on five hits and two walks. Herrmann and Howell again opened the rally with back-to-back singles before Derek Woodwine&nbsp;worked a walk to load the bases.

Burgos helped the Tigers go back on top 7-6 with a two-RBI single to right before two more runs came around on sacrifice flies from Moore and Ural. Zane Knox&nbsp;&nbsp;then made it 11-6 with a two-RBI double to right.

Fort Hays State added an insurance run in the top of the ninth when Moore led off with a triple into the gap in left center and later scored on a ground out from DeGarmo.

That was more than enough for Kaleb Carpenter, who came on in relief to throw the final six innings of work. The junior retired the final 10 batters he faced, moving to 4-2 on the year after picking up the win. Carpenter struck out a season-high eight batters while allowing two runs on three hits and one walk.

Trevor Baugh made the start, tossing three-plus innings while giving up four runs on five hits and one walk alongside three strikeouts.

The Tigers close out their home schedule with four games next week . Tuesday they close out their midweek series against Emporia State beginning at 4 p.m. They will then host Northwest Missouri State in a three-game set over the weekend including the annual Pack the Park event on Friday, April 25 beginning at 7 p.m.&nbsp;&nbsp;

⚾ No. 23 Tigers sweep doubleheader at Newman, clinch series win

DETROIT (AP) — Tomás Nido and Andy Ibáñez hit solo homers and rookie Jackson Jobe pitched five strong innings to lead the Detroit Tigers to a 7-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Friday night.

Spencer Torkelson delivered a two-run double in the seventh for his AL-leading 13th extra-base hit for the Tigers.

Kansas City's Bobby Witt Jr. doubled in the first to extend his hitting streak to 11 games, scoring on Vinnie Pasquantino's double for a 1-0 lead.

Nido, who went 3 for 4, homered for the first time with the Tigers to tie it in the second. Ibáñez's solo shot leading off the fourth put them ahead for good.

Riley Greene and Trey Sweeney had RBI singles in a three-run fifth to chase Royals starter Cole Ragans (1-1), whose team record-tying streak of three straight starts with 10-plus strikeouts ended. Ragans gave up five runs on six hits in four innings, striking out eight for a major league-best 39.

Witt singled and scored on Pasquantino's single in the ninth off Kenta Maeda. Tommy Kahnle got the final two outs for his fourth save.

The Royals have lost five straight and are 1-7 so far on a 10-game road trip.

The Royals sent the tying run to the plate with one out in the ninth, but Kahnle struck out Cavan Biggio before Drew Waters lined out to end it.

The Royals began the day averaging 2.95 runs — ahead of only the Rockies. They have scored four runs or less in 19 of 21 games and haven’t scored more than four since April 4 against Baltimore.

Game 1: Pittsburg State 7, Fort Hays State 1 Pittsburg State methodically pulled away for a win in the first contest of the day, scoring runs in each inning from the first through fifth, building a 7-0 lead. The top 10 teams will qualify for the MIAA Tournament, which will be hosted by Fort Hays State University at Fleharty Family Field in Hays. DETROIT (AP) — Riley Greene broke out of an extended slump with three hits and two RBIs to lead the Detroit Tigers to a 6-1 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Thursday night.

The Royals lost their fourth straight game and have dropped six of seven.

Greene, who had one hit and 18 strikeouts in his previous 32 at-bats entering the game, popped out to short in the first inning before RBI singles in the third and fifth innings. He added an infield single in the seventh.

Spencer Torkelson had two hits and drove in three runs for Detroit, which had lost three of four.

Maikel Garcia had an RBI single in the eighth inning for the Royals. Former Tiger Michael Lorenzen (1-3) gave up four runs on seven hits and three walks with three strikeouts.

Kansas City hitting coach Alec Zumwalt was ejected in the ninth inning for arguing balls and strikes.

After Detroit jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third, the Royals loaded the bases with one out in the fourth. But, Drew Walters struck on on three pitches from Olson, and Kyle Isbel popped out to left on the first pitch he face.

Torkelson, who hit .219 last season and spent 2 1/2 months in Triple-A, is batting .286 with six homers and 16 RBIs in 20 games.

CENTER – The Hays High baseball team lost twice at Clay Center Thursday, 8-7 and
4-0. The Indians have now dropped three-straight and fall to 6-4 on the season.

Game 1: Clay Center 8, Hays 7
 Hays scored four in the first and two in the second to build an early 6-1 lead
but the Tigers answered with five in the fifth to take a 7-6 lead. After the
Indians scored a run in the top of the sixth, Clay Center answered with a two-out
RBI single in the bottom of the inning to retake the lead. HHS got a leadoff
single in the seventh but the next three batters were retired.

Rhoades got the Indians on the board with a one-out RBI double in the first.
Johnny Cano later scored on a wild pitch. Ian McGuire added an RBI single and Bennet
Smith drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.

⚾ Indians swept at Clay Center

GREAT
BEND – The Hays High girls finished second and boys third at Thursday’s Jack Bowman Track and Field Invitational hosted by Great Bend high school. The girls scored 118.75
points, 43.25 behind first place Andale. The boys scored 120 points and were
three back of second-place Andale and 13 behind first place Bishop Carroll.

The
girls won five events and were led by sophomore Lyndi Zimmerman who broke the school
record in the 100 hurdles (14.57). The previous school record was 14.81 was set by Kristin Fleharty in 2008. Zimmerman now has the fastest time in Class 5A and the second fastest in all classes. She was also on the first-place 4x100 relay along
with Mariah Hallam, Lynsi Kanak and Kamryn McCall. Their time of 49.58 is the second fastest in 5A.

The
other girls first place finishers were Katie Linenberger in the high jump (5-6), Zoe
Winter in the shot put (37-9.50) and Aralen Maupin in the 400 (1:01.96).

The
boys had three first place finishes. Kamani Jones won the high jump (6-4). He finished second in the long jump and triple jump as well as the 4x100 relay. Jack Zeller
won the discus (158-7) and Dalton Meyers the javelin (168-8).

Among
the second place finishes for the Hays girls was Lynsi Kanek in the long
jump, Brooke Bieker the triple jump and Rylen Harrington the javelin.

The boys second place finishes included Jaxson Chartier in the shot put, Taevian
Maupin-Dabney the 400, Bryce Steffan the 300 hurdles and the 4x100 relay consisting
of Holden Lind, Michael Watson, Braxton Basgall and Kamani Jones.

WICHITA, Kan. - The 23rd-ranked Fort Hays State baseball team fell to Newman 15-9 on a blustery Thursday afternoon at McCarthy Field. The teams combined to hit seven home runs on the day, including four from the Jets (10-28, 6-22 MIAA) and three from the Tigers (27-11, 21-6 MIAA).

Ty Riley&nbsp;got the start and struck out seven batters in five-plus innings of work, giving the senior 95 strikeouts on the year. That total ties the FHSU single season school record set 48 years ago by Kevin Jilka (1977).

Fort Hays State opened the scoring early and often, with the first five batters coming across to score. Tony Moore and Trey DeGarmo&nbsp;both worked walks while Isiah Ural singled, loading the bases for Derek Woolwine. The designated hitter made it 2-0 with a single to left before Brady Kreutzer&nbsp;smashed his ninth home run of the season, driving in three RBI and giving the Tigers a quick 5-0 lead.

Newman's starting pitcher Aleks Koppel settled in after that, retiring 14 of the next 15 batters he faced. The Jet bats, meanwhile, slowly chipped away at the lead, pushing across one run in the first, another in the second, two in the third and the game-tying run in the fourth.

The Tigers regained the lead in the top of the seventh when&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/baseball/roster/luis-ayala/8413">Luis Ayala</a>&nbsp;stroked a one-out double to left field. Moore followed with a two-run home run, giving FHSU a 7-5 advantage. JOPLIN, Mo. - The Fort Hays State softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader against Missouri Southern Thursday afternoon on the road, losing 2-1 in the opener before falling 10-0 in game two. The Tigers dip to 23-17 on the year and 8-12 in conference play, while the Lions are now 32-16 overall and 12-8 in MIAA action.

Corso, the longtime&nbsp;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qUAPPOaUr4k" target="_blank">ESPN broadcaster and folksy former coach</a>&nbsp;widely known for his endearing expressions and elaborate headgear picks, is set to retire after a career with the show that began in 1987, ESPN announced Thursday. His final broadcast will be Aug. 30 — Week 1 of the 2025 college football season — and the network said additional programming to celebrate Corso is also planned.

“My family and I will be forever indebted for the opportunity to be part of ESPN and ‘College GameDay’ for nearly 40 years,” Corso said in a statement to ESPN. “I have a treasure of many friends, fond memories and some unusual experiences to take with me into retirement.”

Corso, who turns 90 in August, began his&nbsp;<a href="https://www.espn.com/video/clip/_/id/44715325" target="_blank">popular headgear segment</a>&nbsp;in October 1995 at a game at Ohio State. Since then, he has gone 286-144 in 430 selections wearing everything from helmets and mascot heads to dressing up as the Fighting Irish leprechaun from Notre Dame, the Stanford tree and historic figures James Madison and Benjamin Franklin.

Corso’s career has lasted through a health scare in 2009, when he suffered a stroke that left him unable to speak for a while. He returned to “College GameDay ”later that year. Though he hasn’t joined his colleagues as much on the road in recent years, Corso was at the site of last year’s national title game between Ohio State and Notre Dame in Atlanta.

Corso was a college and pro football coach for 28 years before transitioning to broadcasting. He coached 15 years in college at Louisville, Indiana and Northern Illinois.

NEW YORK (AP) — Aaron Judge hit a tiebreaking homer leading off the seventh inning that ended a 10-game drought, and the New York Yankees defeated the Kansas City Royals 4-3 on Wednesday night to complete a three-game sweep.

With a runner at second base in the ninth, Cody Bellinger made a diving catch in right field on MJ Melendez’s sinking liner to preserve Fernando Cruz’s first career save.

Judge went deep for the first time since April 4 in Pittsburgh when he lifted a 1-0 sinker from John Schreiber (1-1) into the New York bullpen beyond the right-center fence.

Judge had three hits for the third time this season. He reached base four times and his batting average climbed 27 points to a major league-best .409.

Yankees starter Clarke Schmidt had some dominant moments and pitched 5 2/3 innings of three-run ball in his season debut. After recovering from rotator cuff tendinitis, the right-hander permitted four hits and threw 73 pitches.

Anthony Volpe hit a two-run double in the third and Bellinger had an RBI double in the fourth to give the Yankees a 3-1 lead.

Schmidt retired 11 straight before Drew Waters opened the fifth with a single and scored on Kyle Isbel's triple. Isbel scored the tying run on a groundout by Jonathan India.

Salvador Perez hit an RBI single four batters in before Schmidt settled down.

Kansas City starter Kris Bubic allowed three runs and seven hits in 5 1/3 innings.

Mark Leiter Jr. (2-1) got four outs after Schmidt was lifted, and Cruz pitched two scoreless innings.

After the Royals tied the game, Bobby Witt Jr. swung at the first pitch and flied out to end the fifth.

Judge entered hitting .382 (13 for 34) over his previous 10 games.

Alyse Zimmerman - Pratt Community College Tennis Alyse Zimmerman realized how good she had gotten at tennis towards the end of her senior campaign in the fall. It has led her to an opportunity in Pratt.

GOODLAND—TMP softball continued its unbeaten streak Tuesday,
running it to 14 straight games, in a sweep of the Goodland Cowgirls on the
road: 3-1 and 23-0.

In the first game of the day, the Monarchs rallied from down
1-0, scoring two runs in the sixth and one more in the seventh to win 3-1.

The two teams played to a 0-0 draw through the first two
innings before Goodland took advantage of an error in the bottom of the third
inning, taking a 1-0 lead.

Despite both teams threatening through the next two innings,
neither team was able to break through on the scoreboard until TMP pushed
across two runs in the top of the sixth inning. 

Brooke Koenigsman tripled home the tying run with one out in
the top of the sixth inning, and then two hitters later, she scored on an error
by the Goodland second baseman, putting TMP up 2-1.

Brynn Rebel added an RBI double in the seventh inning, lifting
TMP to the 3-1 win.

Rebel and Koenigsman each collected a pair of hits and an
RBI.

Rebel also earned the win in the circle, allowing just one
unearned run, on three hits with seven strikeouts in seven innings.

In the second game of the day, every Monarch but one collected
at least one hit, and all but two recorded an RBI.

The Monarchs got the offense going early, scoring five runs
in the first two innings and then putting the game away with 13 runs in the top
of the third inning. 

Brooke Koenigsman doubled in a pair of runs in the first
inning, putting TMP up 2-0.

The Monarchs also scored runs on a sacrifice fly, an error,
and a Brynn Schoepf double in the first inning for a 5-0 lead.

In the Monarchs' five-run second inning, Goodland committed
five errors, resulting in a TMP run. They added a Koenigsman two-run double and
scored on a fielder’s choice and a passed ball for a 10-0 lead in the second
inning.

With TMP leading 10-0 in the top of the third inning, Rebel
and Bria Windholz both homered, Paige Koenigsman doubled, and Nicole Schumacher,
Molly Helget and Brooke Koenigsman singled to drive in runs. TMP scored on three
Goodland errors in the inning in a 23-0 victory.

Brooke Koenigsman finished 4-for-4 with 6 RBIs and 4 runs
scored. Paige Koenigsman added 4 RBIs.

Bria Windholz earned the win in the circle. She allowed just
one hit with three strikeouts in three shutout innings.

running it to 14 straight games, in a sweep of the Goodland Cowgirls on the
road: 3-1 and 23-0.GAME 1: TMP 3, Goodland 1In the first game of the day, the Monarchs rallied from down
1-0, scoring two runs in the sixth and one more in the seventh to win 3-1.The two teams played to a 0-0 draw through the first two
innings before Goodland took advantage of an error in the bottom of the third
inning, taking a 1-0 lead.Despite both teams threatening through the next two innings,
neither team was able to break through on the scoreboard until TMP pushed
across two runs in the top of the sixth inning. Brooke Koenigsman tripled home the tying run with one out in
the top of the sixth inning, and then two hitters later, she scored on an error
by the Goodland second baseman, putting TMP up 2-1.Brynn Rebel added an RBI double in the seventh inning, lifting
TMP to the 3-1 win.Rebel and Koenigsman each collected a pair of hits and an
RBI.Rebel also earned the win in the circle, allowing just one
unearned run, on three hits with seven strikeouts in seven innings.GAME 2: TMP 23, Goodland 0In the second game of the day, every Monarch but one collected
at least one hit, and all but two recorded an RBI.The Monarchs got the offense going early, scoring five runs
in the first two innings and then putting the game away with 13 runs in the top
of the third inning. Brooke Koenigsman doubled in a pair of runs in the first
inning, putting TMP up 2-0.The Monarchs also scored runs on a sacrifice fly, an error,
and a Brynn Schoepf double in the first inning for a 5-0 lead.In the Monarchs' five-run second inning, Goodland committed
five errors, resulting in a TMP run. They added a Koenigsman two-run double and
scored on a fielder’s choice and a passed ball for a 10-0 lead in the second

FHSU Athletics TOPEKA, Kan. - The 20th-ranked Fort Hays State baseball team rallied once again to defeat the Washburn Ichabods on Tuesday (April 15), erasing a 6-1 deficit to win 10-8 in extra innings. With the win the Tigers (27-10, 21-5 MIAA) completed the season sweep of the Ichabods (21-21, 14-15 MIAA) for the first time since 2008.

Washburn struck first with four runs on six hits in the bottom of the first. After the first six Tiger batters were retired, Cesar Saavedra opened the third with a single. A pair of free passes loaded the bases for Isaiah Ural, who lifted a sacrifice fly to right to drive in FHSU's first run of the game.

The Ichabods responded with single runs in the third and fourth innings, padding their lead to five, 6-1. Two walks and a wild pitch allowed the Tigers to plate two more runs on a pair of sacrifice flies in the top of the sixth, first from Derek Woolwine and later from Brady Kreutzer. Luis Ayala then made it a one run game in the top of the seventh with his second home run of the season, a two-run drive to left.

The home team punched back with a run on two hits and two free passes in the bottom of the seventh, but reliever Brandon Chavez kept the score at 7-5 thanks to an inning-ending double play.

Saavedra then plated the tying run on an RBI groundout before Cooper Howell gave the Tigers their first lead of the day with a hard-hit double to left.Washburn managed to tie things up in the bottom of the eighth with a bases-loaded sacrifice fly, but Chavez was again able to get out of the jam with a 6-4-3 double play.Tony Moore led off the ninth with a double but was stranded in scoring position before Chavez retired the side in order in the bottom of the ninth to send things to extra innings.Elliott Herrmann worked a one-out walk to get a rally started in the 10th before Howell singled up the middle. Ayala then sent a cue ball off the end of the bat towards second, loading the bases on an infield single and turning the lineup over.Moore worked a full count before lining one back up the middle and off the pitcher's foot. The ball caromed towards the shortstop, who made a desperation throw to first that was far too late. With the runners going on the pitch and expecting a Hail Mary throw from the infielder, Howell was able to score from second on the infield single to give the Tigers a 10-8 lead.Chavez allowed a two-out single to bring the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the inning, but the lefty brought the game to a close with a lazy fly ball to center. The sophomore earned the win, improving to 6-0 on the year, after tossing 4.0 innings of relief. He allowed six hits and one run while striking out two batters.Cade Flaherty got the start, giving up five runs on seven hits and three walks in 3.0 innings of work. Mike Acierno tossed the next three innings, scattering two runs and four hits across those frames.Fort Hays State was outhit in the game, 17-9, however the Tigers left just seven runners on base across the 10 innings compared to 12 left on from the Ichabods.Moore, Kreutzer, Howell and Ayala all had two hits each in the ballgame, with Moore and Ayala each driving in a pair and DeGarmo and Saavedra both scoring twice.The Tigers will next travel to Wichita, Kan. beginning Thursday (April 17) for a three-game series against Newman. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
