HAYS, Kan. - The 20th-ranked Fort Hays State baseball team opened its series against Northeastern State with a 2-0 victory Friday evening at Larks Park. The Tigers (25-9, 19-4 MIAA) collected seven hits on the day, while starter Ty Riley&nbsp;limited the RiverHawks (11-26, 8-15 MIAA) to just two hits in a complete game shutout.

Riley's nine inning shutout was the first-such performance by a Tiger in eight years (Sam Capps, 3/22/17 vs. NWOSU). The senior fanned nine batters and allowed just four baserunners on two hits and two walks. He retired the final 13 batters he faced to improve to 8-1 on the year and lower his ERA to 2.45. Riley now has 88 strikeouts on the year, tied for fourth-most in a single season at FHSU and just seven away from tying the program record.

After leaving one man on in the bottom of the first, the Tigers opened the scoring in the bottom of the second when Elliott Herrmann&nbsp;roped a one-out double into the gap in left center. Cesar Saavedra&nbsp;then worked a walk before Cooper Howell&nbsp;singled to load the bases. Luis Ayala lifted a ball to deep center, allowing Herrmann to easily score to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead.

Fort Hays State doubled its lead in the next inning when Trey DeGarm&nbsp;led off with a single. Brady Kreutzser&nbsp;later singled before Saavedra and Howell worked back-to-back two-out walks, allowing another run to trot home.

The Tigers had plenty of chances to add to their lead, stranding 12 runners on base, but the two runs were more than enough support for Riley. Kreutzer and Herrmann both finished the day 2-for-3 with a double.

Fort Hays State will look to clinch the series win over the RiverHawks Saturday when the teams meet in game two beginning at 3 p.m.

⚾ Riley's gem propels No. 27/20 Tigers past RiverHawks

GARDEN CITY - The Hays High baseball team improved to 5-1 Friday with a doubleheader sweep of Garden City at Clint Lightner Field. The Indians won the opener 9-3 then took the nightcap 9-5 and are now 5-1 overall and 4-0 in the Western Athletics Conference.

The Indians are back on the road Tuesday for a doubleheader in Great Bend.

Game 1: Hays 9, Garden City 3 The Indians scored seven runs in the fourth inning to erase a 2-1 deficit. Brett Rhoades and Jalen Smith opened the inning with back-to-back singles. With one out, Ian McGuire drove in the first run with a single. Landon Hardman added a two-run double to push the lead to 4-2. Following a walk to Johnny Cano, Cooper Johnson singled to right field which scored Hardman. Cano&nbsp; scored on an error on the same play. Back-to-back walks scored Johnson. Carter Graham scored the final run of the inning on a wild pitch.

Jalen Smith allowed three runs on five hits with four walks and no strikeouts and picked up the win.

Game 2: Hays 9, Garden City 5 Carter Graham had four hits and drove in five runs. He doubled in the second which scored two runs, singled in the fifth which drove in a run then knocked in two more with a single in the seventh.

The Indians grabbed the early lead on a Jalen Smith RBI single in the first. Garden City scored four in the bottom of the inning to take the lead only to see HHS answer with four in the top of the second. Johnny Cano drove in the first run with a sacrifice bunt. Graham's double tied the game 4-4. He scored the go-ahead run on a Brett Rhoades groundout.

The Buffaloes scored a run in the third but Hays added single runs in the fourth and fifth then tacked on two in the top of the seventh.

Johnny Cano pitched four hitless innings of relief with five strikeouts and no walks and picked up the win.

⚾ Hays High sweeps Garden City to run win-streak to four

CLEVELAND (AP) — Gabriel Arias had three hits — including a three-run homer — Angel Martínez had his second career three-hit game and the Cleveland Guardians extended their winning streak to four, beating the Kansas City Royals 7-0 on Friday night.

Five Cleveland pitchers combined for the second shutout of the homestand. Tim Herrin (2-0) got the win after starter Tanner Bibee went 4 1/3 innings.

Arias snapped an 0 for 15 skid with a base hit in the second inning. He then connected on a first-pitch fastball from Royals' starter Kris Bubic (0-1) in the fourth inning and put it into the stands in right-center for his second homer of the season.

The three runs were the first earned runs Bubic had allowed in 26 2/3 innings dating to last season.

Martínez, called up from Triple A Columbus on Wednesday, also had a sacrifice fly in a four-run eighth inning to drive in Nolan Jones. Steven Kwan and Carlos Santana added RBI singles and Brayan Rocchio scored from second base after Royals' second baseman Jonathan India had a fly ball by José Ramírez pop out of his glove. It was India's second error of the game.

Kyle Manzardo was safe at second base when the throw by India after fielding Jhonkensy Noel’s grounder was wide and pulled Michael Massey off the bag. That put runners at first and second when Arias came up.

Cleveland's starting pitchers have posted a 1.42 ERA in the team's last five games and have given up only four earned runs in 25 1/3 innings. The Guardians' rotation had a 7.05 ERA in their first eight games.

Kansas City right-hander Michael Lorenzen (1-1, 3.18 ERA), who reached 10 years of major-league service on Tuesday, faces Cleveland right-hander Luis Ortiz (0-2, 8.44 ERA) in the middle game of the series.

WICHITA, Kan. – Fort Hays State softball moved to 23-13 overall and 8-8 in the MIAA with a split of a doubleheader at Newman University on Friday (Apr. 11). An error ended game one in walkoff fashion, 2-1 in favor of the Jets, but the Tigers rebounded for a 5-3 win in the second contest. Newman moved to 7-33 overall and 2-14 in the MIAA.

Game 1: Newman 2, Fort Hays State 1 Fort Hays State struggled to get the bats going throughout the first contest of the day and ultimately fell on a throwing error with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Tigers saw Newman put together back-to-back hits with two outs in the fifth to take a 1-0 lead. FHSU finally put a run on the board in the seventh to keep the game going, but then lost the game on a mistake in the bottom half of the inning.

The Tigers had just three hits through the first six innings of the game. 🥎 Tigers split with Jets in Wichita

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State Tennis improved to 12-5 overall and 2-3 in the MIAA with a 6-1 win over Arkansas-Fort Smith in Hays on Friday. The Tigers took two of three doubles matches for the first point, then won five of six singles contests to close out the win. The Tigers reached 12 wins in a season for the first time in 20 years and still have several matches to play yet. They last reached 12 during the 2004-05 season and it is the first time reaching the mark in their tenure with the MIAA, which began in 2006-07.

In the victory, a pair of Tigers also reached school records.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-tennis/roster/suzana-faucz/8130">Suzana Faucz</a>&nbsp;now holds the record for most combined wins in a season by a freshman with 32. She passed Robin Horan's record of 30 set in 1997.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-tennis/roster/irina-alfonso/8115">Irina Alfonso</a>&nbsp;is now tied for the school record for most combined wins in a season with 35, matching Helen Brooks' record set in 2005.Faucz took over the freshman record for wins when she and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-tennis/roster/irina-alfonso/8115">Irina Alfonso</a>&nbsp;won their No. 2 doubles match 6-2 to help secure the first team point of the match. Three straight-set wins in singles play helped put FHSU up 4-0 and secure the team win. Alfonso breezed through her No. 2 match 6-0, 6-1 to move into a tie for the single-season record for wins overall, now with 17 singles wins and 18 doubles wins.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-tennis/roster/grace-unruh/8121">Grace Unruh</a>&nbsp;won the No. 6 match 6-1, 6-2, and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-tennis/roster/bethan-gill/8116">Bethan Gill</a>&nbsp;won the No. 5 match 6-2, 6-2.

Faucz rallied to win her No. 3 singles contest after falling in the first set 7-5. She won the second 6-1 and then took the third-set tiebreak 10-5. Pereiro was up a set, winning 6-4, before falling 3-6 in the second. However, she battled past her opponent at the No. 4 position, also with a 10-5 win in the third-set tiebreak. Vangala was the only Tiger who fell in singles action, 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 1 position.

Fort Hays State returns to action on Saturday (Apr. 12) when it plays host to Northeastern State at 12 p.m.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Tigers took two of three doubles matches for the first point, then won five of six singles contests to close out the win. The Tigers reached 12 wins in a season for the first time in 20 years and still have several matches to play yet. They last reached 12 during the 2004-05 season and it is the first time reaching the mark in their tenure with the MIAA, which began in 2006-07.In the victory, a pair of Tigers also reached school records.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-tennis/roster/suzana-faucz/8130">Suzana Faucz</a>&nbsp;now holds the record for most combined wins in a season by a freshman with 32. Kansas City, Mo. (AP) — Bobby Witt Jr. hit a tiebreaking sacrifice fly in the seventh inning and the Kansas City Royals beat the Minnesota Twins 3-2 on Thursday.

The Royals trailed by a run before rallying for two in the seventh against reliever Cole Sands (1-1).

With one out, Freddy Fermin walked ahead of singles by Drew Waters and Jonathan India, tying the game at 2 before Witt drove a deep fly to center for the lead.

Daniel Lynch IV (2-0) struck out two of three batters faced and Carlos Estévez earned his fourth save.

Twins starter Bailey Ober allowed a first-inning run on three consecutive singles, then settled in to permit just two hits over his final five scoreless frames. He finished six innings, allowing a run on five hits and a walk, striking out four.

Ty France led off the second inning with his second home run of the year, tying the game.

After one-out walks to Trevor Larnach and France, Ryan Jeffers grounded an RBI single up the middle, breaking a 1-1 tie.

Royals starter Michael Wacha tossed 5 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on three hits and three walks, with four strikeouts.

Jonathan India fouled off four consecutive 3-2 pitches before hitting an RBI single to left, tying the game 2-all in the seventh.

Wacha has allowed fewer than three runs in all but one of his eight starts against the Twins.

Returning to Minnesota on Friday, the Twins face Detroit Tigers RHP Reese Olson (1-1, 5.06). Minnesota will recall RHP David Festa from Triple-A St. Paul to make his first start of the season as RHP Pablo López was placed on the Injured List.

⚾ Witt Jr. hits sacrifice fly in the seventh as the Royals beat the Twins

Hay - Hays High (7-0, 3-0) completed their three game sweep of the Dodge City Red Demons (0-7, 0-5) with a pair of run rule wins on Thursday.

Game 1: Hays 15, Dodge City 0 (4 inn.) Hays High collected 17 hits in the first game of the double header. Six players recorded a multi-hit game. Lauren Klein, Riley Dreher and Lanie Becker had three hits apiece.

Hays scored six runs in the first inning. Dreher drove in the first of her five RBIs on a double that plated Klein. Dreher then scored on a wild pitch and on the same pitch Shae Augustine scored to make the score 3-0.&nbsp;

Becker drove in Brynlee Rupp and Adalie Kippes with a single later in the inning. She then scored on a Katie Klein single to cap the six run inning.

Hays added a run in the second inning on a Avery Solida ground out that scored Dreher.

The Indians scored five in the third inning Jaylee Summers lifted a sacrifice fly to the outfield that scored Becker. Hays then loaded the bases for Dreher who just cleared the left field fence into a 35 mile-per-hour wind for a grand slam home run and a 12-0 lead.

Three more runs in the fourth inning ended the game. Summers scored Kippes and Becker with a double. Summers scored the game ending run on a single by Lauren Klein.

Jaylee Summers (1-0) worked all four innings for the win. She allowed no hits, did not walk a batter while striking out six.

Game 2: Hays 15, Dodge City 0 (4 inn.s) Hays High scored the exact same amount of runs per inning in game two as they did in game one for another 15-0 win.

Like in game one the Indians sent 11 to the plate in the first inning. Five of the first batters reached and scored. Alyse Zimmerman and Lauren Klein scored on a Riley Dreher triple to open the scoring. Dreher took advantage of a passed ball for a 3-0 lead. Lanie Becker drove in Adalie Kippes who was a courtesy runner for Avery Solida and a 4-0 advantage. Jaylee Summers capped the inning with by driving in two runs on a single.

The third inning they added five more runs. Kacie Jones led off the inning with a single and later scored on a single by Summers. The first four batters of the inning all singled. The fourth was Zimmerman who drove in a run. Klein used a sacrifice bunt to add o the lead. Dreher and Brynlee Brous added to the scoreboard with run scoring singles for a 12-0 score.

Hays ended the game with three runs in the fourth once again. Jones, Rupp and Summers all scored. A Zimmerman sacrifice fly and Dreher single drove in the runs.

Dreher again drove in five runs which gave her a total of ten RBI on the day. She went 10-10 against Dodge City in three games this week and raised her batting average to .769. She has 20 hits on the season with half of those being for extra bases.

Lanie Becker (2-0) took the win in the circle. She allowed no runs, no walks, struck out six and allowed two hits.

COLBY — The Colby Community College Trojan basketball teams hosted the Trojan All-Stars game March 30 at the Colby Event Center. 

"It was a game to showcase the region's top athletes in the senior class, with one last time representing their school, families and teams," Coach Jerrod Stanford said. “It was a great day celebrating our local athletes, I hope they understand what an honor it is to be nominated and also the significance of sharing the game of basketball with the youth of the communities.”&nbsp;

The top senior athletes from this region in Kansas, Nebraska and Colorado are nominated by their high school coaches and selected to join their fellow all-stars.

In addition to the game they also open the gym to pour into the next generation of athletes, hosting a free Rising Stars Skills Clinic. 

The kids in attendance got to learn from the Trojan All-Stars and CCC basketball players. They take them through a series of skills drills, fun competition and team building. The event is a huge success ending with a friendly dunk contest by the men’s basketball team. 

“We had a great day celebrating the high school playing careers of several players across our region. The game was highly competitive and all the players were fun to have around. Our CCC players had a chance to give back to our community with the kids skills camp and all had a blast,” Coach Darin Spence shared. &nbsp;

Congratulations to all of the area All-Stars on the huge accomplishment of being chosen and hosted in Colby.&nbsp;

Area high school senior athletes compete in Trojan All-Stars basketball game

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Joe Ryan continued his mastery over Kansas City, giving up just two hits over seven scoreless innings in the Minnesota Twins' 4-0 victory over the Royals on Wednesday night.

Ryan (1-1), who struck out four and did not give up a walk, is now 7-0 in nine career starts against the Royals with a 1.30 ERA in 55 1/3 innings.

Seth Lugo (1-1) threw 109 pitches for the Royals, allowing two runs on five hits in 5 2/3 innings.

The Twins got a run in the fourth on Edouard Julien's RBI single to right. Lugo walked Carlos Correa and Trevor Larnach with one out. After Ty France lined one back to Lugo, Julien drove in Correa.

France's two-out single in the sixth drove in Correa for a 2-0 lead.

The Twins got runs in the eighth and ninth, as Matt Wallner and France, respectively, each hit his first home run of the season.

After the Twins took a 1-0 lead in the fourth, the Royals had a chance to tie the game in the bottom of the inning. Bobby Witt Jr. led off with a double, but he was doubled up after attempting to steal third and not getting back to second when Salvador Perez lined out to center.

France was 3 of 4 Wednesday with a home run and two RBIs. In 30 career games against Kansas City, he's hitting .412, with a 1.154 OPS, his best against any opponent.

The teams will complete a four-game series on Thursday. The Twins will send RHP Bailey Ober (0-1, 12.15 ERA) to the mound to face Kansas City RHP Michael Wacha (0-2, 4.66 ERA).

EMPORIA, Kan. - A complete game from Cade Flaherty&nbsp;helped the 27th-ranked Fort Hays State baseball team defeat Emporia State at the Trusler Sports Complex Wednesday afternoon, 8-1. The Tigers (24-9, 18-4 MIAA) collected 11 hits in the win, including four players with multi-hit performances, while Flaherty limited the Hornets (16-17, 9-13 MIAA) to six hits along with six strikeouts in the win.

Flaherty (3-1) scattered the six ESU hits over the first five innings before retiring 13 of the last 14 batters he faced, allowing only one walk over the final four frames. The complete game was his second nine-inning&nbsp;complete game win of the season.

The Tiger offense backed up its pitcher starting in the top of the second when Brady Kreutzer&nbsp;delivered his eighth home run of the season soaring over the fence in right field. FHSU doubled its lead in the following inning when Tony Moore&nbsp;started a two-out rally with a single. Jose Cintron&nbsp;then worked a walk on a full count to bring Trey DeGarmo&nbsp;to the plate, who singled up the middle to push the lead to 2-0.

Emporia State put together a pair of hits to trim the deficit to 2-1 in the bottom of the third, but FHSU grabbed that run right back in the top of the fourth. Kreutzer led off the inning with a double down the left field line before later coming in to score on a ground ball, pushing the lead to 3-1.

Fort Hays State extended its advantage to 4-1 in the top of the fifth when DeGarmo reached on a bunt single. Kreutzer later worked a walk to extend the inning before Isaiah Ural&nbsp;drove in a run with a single to right field.

The Tigers doubled their run total in the top of the eighth thanks to three hits and multiple free bases. WINGATE, N.C. - The Fort Hays State baseball team moved up two spots to No. 20 in the latest National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Division II Poll, released Wednesday .

The Tigers secured 121 points in the voting process, up 34 points from last week when FHSU was slotted 22nd in the rankings.

The league-leading Tigers are one of two MIAA teams in this week's NCBWA Top 25, with Central Missouri holding on to the No. 2 spot. Central Oklahoma is the only other league rival mentioned in the poll, with the Bronchos receiving votes for the second week in a row.

With 14 games remaining on the conference schedule, Fort Hays State will return to Larks Park this weekend to host Northeastern State. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. on Friday, 3 p.m. on Saturday and noon on Sunday.

⚾ FHSU up to No. 20 in NCBWA poll

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Royals recalled OF Drew Waters from Triple-A Omaha on Wednesday to replace OF Mark Canha, who was placed on the 10-day injured list with a left abductor strain.

Canha was injured in Tuesday's 2-1 victory over the Minnesota Twins when he crashed into the wall in left center. Canha stayed in the game for the remainder of the inning but then asked to be taken out.

Kansas City manager Matt Quatraro is hopeful that Canha's stint on the IL is a short one.

“It's a mild strain,” Quatraro said. “So we’re hopeful that it’s 10 days, maybe just a hair more than that. But you have to see how the first couple days go.”

Waters was hitting .370 with Omaha and was named the International League player of the week for March 31-April 6, during which he hit for the first cycle of his professional career.

Waters has appeared in 137 games over his three seasons with the Royals, with a career-high 98 games in 2023. He appeared in just seven games in 2024. He's hoping that his early season success in Omaha will lead to the opportunity to finally stick with the major league club.

“Honestly, I've just been trying to compete, trying to stay locked in,” he said. "It’s hard in minor league games when it’s freezing cold and there’s 30 fans out there, but I've just been treating every at-bat like it matters and living with the results.

(AP) — The Kansas City Royals recalled OF Drew Waters from Triple-A Omaha on Wednesday to replace OF Mark Canha, who was placed on the 10-day injured list with a left abductor strain.Canha was injured in Tuesday's 2-1 victory over the Minnesota Twins when he crashed into the wall in left center. Canha stayed in the game for the remainder of the inning but then asked to be taken out.Kansas City manager Matt Quatraro is hopeful that Canha's stint on the IL is a short one.“It's a mild strain,” Quatraro said. “So we’re hopeful that it’s 10 days, maybe just a hair more than that. But you have to see how the first couple days go.”Waters was hitting .370 with Omaha and was named the International League player of the week for March 31-April 6, during which he hit for the first cycle of his professional career.Waters has appeared in 137 games over his three seasons with the Royals, with a career-high 98 games in 2023. He appeared in just seven games in 2024. He's hoping that his early season success in Omaha will lead to the opportunity to finally stick with the major league club.“Honestly, I've just been trying to compete, trying to stay locked in,” he said. Witt reached when he went all the way to third on a throwing error on Griffin Jax. Ragans was charged with one run and four hits. Ragans was charged with one run and four hits. John Schreiber (1-0) escaped a jam in the eighth, and Daniel Lynch IV got one out for his first save.

Minnesota had runners on the corners in the top of the eighth when Carlos Correa bounced into an inning-ending double play.

Twins right-hander Pablo López pitched 4 2/3 innings of three-hit ball before departing because of right hamstring tightness. López struck out six and walked one.

The Royals jumped in front in the fourth. Witt hit a one-out double and Pasquantino reached on an error on second baseman Micky Gasper. Witt then scampered home on Salvador Perez's grounder.

The Twins responded in the fifth. Ty France doubled and scored on Harrison Bader's single off left fielder Mark Canha's glove at the top of the wall.

After walking Jonathan India, López grabbed the back of his right leg and was removed after a short visit from Twins trainer Nick Paparesta.

Twins batters are hitting .103 against left-handed pitching this season.

Twins right-hander Joe Ryan (0-1, 4.50 ERA) and Royals right-hander Seth Lugo (1-0, 3.27 ERA) take the mound on Wednesday.

⚾ Ragans strikes out 11 as the Royals beat the sloppy Twins 

HAYS – The TMP-Marian Monarchs extended their unbeaten
streak to six games Tuesday, knocking off the Colby Eagles in a pair of games
in Hays.

GAME 1: TMP 3, Colby 2 In the first game of the doubleheader, TMP starter Ty Schmeidler
allowed just two runs in four-plus innings as the Monarchs held off the Eagles
in a 3-2 victory.

After a scoreless top half of the first inning for
Schmeidler, the TMP offense scratched a run across in the bottom of the inning.

Jacob Seib led off the inning with a double, and Ian Nehls
drove him home on an RBI single. Putting TMP 1-0.

Colby tied the game with a solo homer in the top of the
third inning.

With the game tied at one in the bottom of the third, Seib
led off the inning with a triple. Nehls walked, and then Schmeidler was hit by
a pitch to lead the bases. 

Caden Dinkel delivered an RBI single to center, putting TMP
up 2-1. Later in the inning, Grant Nehls drove in a run with a sacrifice fly,
putting TMP up 3-1.

The Eagles add a run in the fourth on an error, but after
that, Schmeidler and fellow pitcher Grant Nehls shut the Eagles down and secured
the 3-2 TMP victory.

Schmeidler picked up the win. He allowed just two runs, one earned
with three walks and six strikeouts.

Nehls earned the save with two and a third innings of perfect
relief.

Jacob Seib was 2-for-3 with a double and a triple. 

GAME 2: TMP 15, Colby 1 Six Monarchs recorded a multi-hit game in the day's second
game, and five had at least TMP RBIs in a 15-1 run-rule victory.

Adler Browns two-run single in the top of the first inning helped
the Monarchs jump out to an early lead.

The Eagle cut into the TMP lead in the second, making it 2-1
TMP.

TMP’s offense came to life in the bottom of the third
inning, scoring four times and extending their lead to 6-1.

Ty Schmeidler got the scoring started in the bottom of the
third, driving in Ian Nehls on an RBI single for a 3-1 lead.

Grant Nehls singled home a second run in the inning for a
4-1 lead. They then added a run on a wild pitch, and Trevor Fabrizius drove in
a run on a sacrifice fly.
