Sharon (Phlieger) Braun, 71, of Surprise, Arizona passed away Monday 5/25/2020 at her home in Sun City Grand, Surprise, Arizona.&nbsp;

Sharon was born July 18, 1948 in Quinter, Kansas. Sharon was one of 4 children born to Pius A and Delores (Goetz) Phlieger. Sharon grew up on a farm south of Park, KS.&nbsp; She graduated from Park High School. She attended Fort Hays State after High School.&nbsp;

She married Jim Braun on February 23,1980, and celebrated their 40th anniversary this year.&nbsp; Sharon owned and operated Sharon’s Creations, a seasonal kiosk gift business with stores and kiosks in malls around the country during the Christmas season for 28 years. She was a Realtor in Surprise, AZ for a few years and retired in 2013.&nbsp;

Sharon enjoyed scrapbooking for her children &amp; grandchildren and playing Mah Jong with a multitude of friends!&nbsp;

Survivors include her Husband, Jim; Daughter Melissa Lawver &amp; husband Terrence, Aurora, CO; Son Dustin, Surprise, AZ; Mother Delores Phlieger, Quinter, KS; Brother Phil Phlieger, Phoenix, AZ; Sister Shirley Morel &amp; husband Lonnie, Grainfield, KS; 3 Grandchildren Brayden &amp; Mackensie Lawver, Aurora, CO. &amp; Teagan Braun, Surprise, AZ.; Mother In Law Wanda Braun, Hays, KS, Sisters in law &amp; Brothers in Law Cindy &amp; Harvey Munsch, Hays, KS. Kurt &amp; Cindy Braun, Aurora, CO. Steve &amp; Sue Braun, Aurora, CO, Kathy Hoss, Tulsa, OK, Karen &amp; Mario Gutierrez, Hays, KS, Susan &amp; Todd Dreiling, Colorado Springs, CO. She also has 19 Nieces/Nephews &amp; 39 Great Nieces/Nephews.&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her Dad Pius Phlieger 1987, her Brother Rick Phlieger 2002 and Father In Law Edwin Braun 2017.&nbsp;

Cremation is planned and due to the circumstances, we have chosen to have a celebration of life later in the year in Arizona and in Kansas.&nbsp;

passed away on June 1, 2020 at Via Christi Village, Hays.&nbsp; She was born 
April 8, 1936 in Catharine, KS to William R. and Pauline (Doerfler) 
Staab.&nbsp; On October 6, 1953, she was married to Joseph C. Karlin at St. 
Catherine Church in Catharine, KS.&nbsp; He preceded her in death on May 1, 
2011.

Thelma was a homemaker and seamstress.&nbsp;
 She was an avid sports fan and especially enjoyed following the Kansas 
City Royals and the Wichita State Shockers. She was also a member of the
 VFW Auxilliary.&nbsp; Family and friends will always remember her sweet 
smile.

Survivors include three daughters, 
Jeaninne Kaberlein (Bill, Coleen Shields, and Sue Taylor (Rob, all of 
Hays; three sons, Thomas Karlin (Margaret) of Colby, KS, Lawrence Karlin
 (Sheila) of Garden City, KS and Paul Karlin (Darla, Hays; a sister, 
Henrietta Karlin, Hays and a brother, Gerald Staab (June, of&nbsp; Longmont,
 CO; fourteen grandchildren and twenty-one great-grandchildren, along 
with many members of her extended family, who were also her very dear 
friends.&nbsp;&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her 
husband, Joseph C. Karlin; a son Joseph William Karlin; her sister, 
Laurinda Rome and two brothers, Edward Staab and William R. Staab, Jr.

Funeral services will be held 10:00 AM Friday, June 5, 2020 at St.

Arlen Francis Ruhnke, 67, went home to Jesus on Friday, May 29, 2020, at his home in Long Island, KS. 

Arlen was born on June 12, 1952, to Douglas and Florence (Albers) Ruhnke in Troy, KS where he lived most of his life. He graduated from Troy High School in 1970 and Missouri Western State College in 1974. 

After college, he worked several jobs including working for the REA as a lineman, worked for his dad at the NAPA store, built houses and was a rural mail carrier for 26 years, and ran his own farm north of Troy. 

After his retirement, he moved to Long Island, KS in 2013. He married Barbara Prawl on October 22, 1977. They have been married for 42 years. Together they raised 4 children. His family was his life and teaching his children and grandchildren to know Jesus was most important to him. 

He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Troy and the Norton Christian Church in Norton, KS where he was involved with the youth programs. He leaves behind a legacy of the Gospel of Christ. 

Arlen is preceded in death by his parents, Douglas and Florence Ruhnke, his brother Wayne Ruhnke, an unborn child, and an unborn grandchild. 

Survivors include his wife, Barb of the home, son Daniel and wife Selena, St. Joseph, MO, daughter Corinne and husband Clint, of Long Island, son Aaron and wife Jessica, of Topeka, KS, son Jay and wife Jennifer, of Las Vegas, NV, a sister Rosa Madison of Troy, KS, 13 grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, friends and relatives. 

A memorial service will be held at the Norton Christian Church, Norton, KS on Monday, June 1 at 10:30am. A graveside service will be held in Bendena, KS at Moray Cemetery on Wednesday June 3 at 1pm.

Dwane “Swede” W. Johnson of Hoxie, Kansas passed away on Saturday, April
 11, 2020 at the ComfortCare Home in Wichita, Kansas at the age of 68. 
He was born on November 12, 1951 in Lindsborg, Kansas to Ervin W. and 
Dagmar I. (Anderson) Johnson. He grew up on the family farm. Dwane 
attended a one room school, Mount Hope, through eighth grade and 
Lindsborg High School graduating with the class of 1969. During his four
 years of high school, he was a member of Future Farmers of America. 
After graduation from high school, Dwane attended Salina Area Vocational
 Technology School for two years. During his two years at Salina VoTech
 he was a member of the basketball team.
 Dwane married Martha Norman on August 7, 1971 in Salina, Kansas. 
They moved to Hoxie, Kansas where they made their home. They were 
blessed with a daughter and two sons. Dwane was employed by Hoxie 
Implement for forty-five years. During that time, he worked for them as
 a mechanic, shop foreman, in the parts department, and as a truck 
driver. He retired from the Implement dealership in 2016. Dwane was a 
Volunteer Fireman for forty-three years for Sheridan County Fire 
Department and served as Assistant Fire Chief for many years. He loved 
being able to serve his community.
 For fun and relaxation boating, camping, fishing and hunting were at
 the top of Dwane’s list. He especially enjoyed deer hunting with his 
family. Deer hunting was really a family affair, with family coming the
 first weekend of Deer Season and others staying for two weeks. He 
loved being and working outside in his garden or yard. Family was very 
important to Dwane. If a family member or friend needed a helping hand,
 he was always willing and ready to help. Dwane never knew a stranger 
and loved talking with everyone he met. The most important thing in his
 life was his family. He loved them dearly.
 Dwane is survived by his loving wife, Marty, of the home, Hoxie, 
Kansas; sons, Curtis Johnson and wife Megan of Kansas City, Missouri 
and Christopher Johnson and wife Sara of Hoxie, Kansas; daughter, Janine
 Foth &amp; husband Travis of Peabody, Kansas; brother, Dale Johnson 
and wife Rebecca of Bonners Ferry , Idaho ; sister, Colleen Lundstrom 
and husband Dave of Russellville, Missouri; grandchildren, Austin 
Sanders, Marcus Sanders, Nicole Sanders, Michelle Johnson, Trevor Foth 
(Rachael, Kortney Foth, Kayla Page, Jasmine Russell, Isabelle Parsons,

Glenn Richard “Rich” Werth, age 76, died June 1, 2020 at HaysMed.&nbsp; He
 was born on June 9, 1943 in Schoenchen to Frank F. and Lidwina 
(Tauscher) Werth.

Rich attended Schoenchen school, he lived many years in California 
working as a tool machinist, then returned home to Hays where he worked 
as a house painter.&nbsp; He loved early mornings, the outdoors, fishing, 
gambling, and beers at the Golden Q.

He married Roberta Schwab and from that union they were blessed with four children.&nbsp; They later divorced.

Survivors include two daughters:&nbsp; Kim (Jim) Lascola of McKinney, TX; 
Laura of CA; two sons:&nbsp; Glenn of Oxnard, CA; and Ricky of CA.&nbsp; Nine 
grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.&nbsp; His brothers:&nbsp; Ernie (Marlys) 
Werth of Schoenchen, KS; Steve Werth of Lancaster, CA; sisters:&nbsp; Laurine
 Werth of Hays, KS; MaryAnn Rendt of Wichita, KS; Genevieve Mendenhall 
of Wichita, KS; and Cheryl Kay Thomas of Hays, KS and many nieces and

Glenn Richard 'Rich' Werth

Sammy Duane Busby, 76, of Colby, died Tuesday, May 26, 2020 at Prairie 
Senior Living Complex, Colby. He was born August 18, 1943, in St. 
Francis, KS, to Willard and Pauline (Trembly) Busby. Sammy graduated 
from St. Francis High School and served in the United States Air Force. 
After his time in the service he was an over the road truck driver. He 
also worked for several local farmers around Palco. Sammy enjoyed 
fishing, NASCAR, tinkering and doing leather work. 
He was preceded in death by his wife Judy (Cleveland) Busby; five brothers and one sister. 
He is survived by his children, Robert (Kathy) Blessing, David (Arvara)

 </figure>Sammy Duane Busby, 76, of Colby, died Tuesday, May 26, 2020 at Prairie 
Senior Living Complex, Colby. He was born August 18, 1943, in St. 
Francis, KS, to Willard and Pauline (Trembly) Busby. Sammy graduated 
from St. Francis High School and served in the United States Air Force. 
After his time in the service he was an over the road truck driver. He 
also worked for several local farmers around Palco. Sammy enjoyed 
fishing, NASCAR, tinkering and doing leather work. 
He was preceded in death by his wife Judy (Cleveland) Busby; five brothers and one sister. 
He is survived by his children, Robert (Kathy) Blessing, David (Arvara) 
Blessing, Susan (Greg) Morey, Cindy (Danny) Diaz, Michelle (Mike) Weed 
and Ron (Sonya) Busby; sister, Sharon Busby; twelve grandchildren and

Sammy Duane Busby

Illa Jean Balthazor passed away on Saturday, May 30, 2020 at the Trego 
County Lemke Memorial Hospital in WaKeeney, Kansas, at the age of 88. 
Illa was born on October 10, 1931 in Gridley, Kansas to Clarence and 
Hazel (Povenmire) Cokeley. She was raised in Palco, Kansas where she 
attended high school and graduated as Valedictorian of the Class of 
1949. Shortly after graduating, she was united in marriage to Jerome 
Balthazor at the St. Joseph Church in Damar, Kansas. They were blessed 
with 4 children: Gloria, Ronald, Donald, and Marty.
 Illa worked all her life; her early years at the Cafés in Palco, and
 later as manager for the Norris Grain Elevator for 12 to 15 years. Her 
last 15 years, she worked for Northwestern Pump and Supply. During her 
children’s younger years she was a part of the Producer’s Club. When 
Illa wasn’t working or raising her family, she loved to square dance 
with Jerome, play cards and marbles, cook delicious meals, and bake 
tasty treats. Illa was a member of the St. Ann’s Catholic Church in 
Zurich, Kansas and a part of their altar society prior to moving to the 
Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Plainville.
 She is survived by her children, Gloria (Steve) Linville of Ponca 
City, OK, Ronald (Ann) Balthazor of Lexington, NE, and Marty Balthazor 
of Plainville; sister, JoAnn (Raymond) Phillips of WaKeeney; seven 
grandchildren; and fifteen great-grandchildren.
 Illa is preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Hazel 
Cokeley; husband, Jerome Balthazor; son, Donald Balthazor; brothers,

Illa Jean Balthazor

Sherrill Ann Arnold, 44, passed away May 31, 2020, at the University 
Of Kansas Health System - Great Bend Campus. She was born on July 16, 
1975 at Great Bend, to Stephen &amp; Debra (Bailey) Arnold.

A lifetime Great Bend resident, Sherrill was a client of Sunflower 
Diversified Services. She was a member of First Assembly of God Church, 
and the Storm Special Olympics track and basketball teams. She enjoyed 
spending time with family, and going on family vacations, especially 
Disney World. To Sherrill, family was everything. She was an avid Kansas
 City Chiefs and Royals fan and she loved swimming.

Survivors include, her parents, Stephen and Debra Arnold of Great 
Bend; a brother, Stephen "Michael" Arnold, Jr. (Cass) of Great Bend; 
three sisters, Laura Harrington (Joseph, Stephanie Galusha, and Amy 
Arnold, all of Great Bend; grandmother, Bonnie Arnold of Great Bend; 
several aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends; and nephews and nieces, 
Alex Arnold, Adyn Haines, Ethan Harrington, Adison Galusha, Abygail 
Arnold Haines, and Madelyn Harrington. She was preceded in death by her 
grandparents, Kenneth “Bud” Arnold, and Merl and Alene Bailey; and a

Dorothy Gayle Bradford, age 81, of Mt. Vernon, Missouri, passed away 
at 9:57 p.m. on Friday, May 29, 2020, at her home.&nbsp; She was born 
November 30, 1938, in Jetmore, Kansas, the daughter of George and 
Mildred (Pittaway) Law.

Dorothy was a nurse’s aide and was a manager for a senior citizens 
complex and attended the First Christian Church of Mt. Vernon.

On February 8, 1953, she married Arlyn Bradford in Jetmore, Kansas.&nbsp; He preceded her in death on November 15, 2011.

Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Mona Gayle Berry of Mt. Vernon; 
four grandchildren, Ryan Bradford and his wife, Angela, Lonnie Bradford 
and his wife, Nikki, Aubrey Off and Jacob Berry; one brother, David Law 
and his wife, Juanita, of Jetmore, Kansas; one sister, Evelyn Bradford 
and&nbsp; her husband, Don, of Pratt, Kansas, four great-grandchildren and 
several nieces and nephews.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, George and Mildred, 
husband, Buzz, two sons, Dale and Lonnie Bradford and one grandson, 
Craig Bradford.

A private family service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, June 5, 2020 at

Larry Dean McCoy, 79, passed away on May 16, 2020 at the Hays Medical
 Center in Hays, Kansas. He was born on April 30, 1941 on the family 
farm in Ness County, Kansas the son of Neal and Mary (McVicker) McCoy.

Larry was a farmer and rancher. He was a United States Army Veteran.

Survivors include a brother, Thomas, and his wife, Joy McCoy of Ness 
City; 2 nieces, Sandy Kramos and Jill Schniepp; and a nephew, Brett 
Ault-McCoy. He was preceded in death by his parents, and 2 sisters, Vera
 Schniepp and Lois Schwartzkopf.

Because of Covid-19, cremation has taken place and a service will be held at a later date.

Larry Dean McCoy

Ethel Luana (Galloway) Vaughan was born on July 23rd, 1919 at the family farm located two miles north of Jamestown in Cloud County, KS. 

Ethel was a teacher of 1st grade children for 47 years.  She taught for 4 years in Plainville, Phillipsburg, and Horton, KS, 15 years in Concordia, KS and 28 years in San Rafael and Corte Madera, CA.  

While teaching in Plainville, KS in 1940, Ethel and Norman W. Vaughan met.  On June 5th, 1957 Ethel and Norm were married in Jamestown, KS.  In 1958, Ethel joined Norm in Marin County north of San Francisco Bay.  Ethel continued to teach 1st grade in San Rafael and Corte Madera for 28 years.  Ethel and Norm built a home outside of Point Reyes Station, CA, where they had ample land for a large garden with fruit and vegetables. Ethel continued working with children as a substitute teacher for 13 years.  Norm passed away in March 2003 at home in Rossmoor, a retirement community in Walnut Creek, CA.  For several years, Ethel volunteered in a preschool program located in the Grace Presbyterian Church.  Ethel moved to Whispering Pines, Norton, KS in March 2013 to be closer to her sister.

Ethel has traveled internationally.  In 1955 Ethel was chosen by the United Presbyterian Church in America, as one of ten to participate in a 'work camp' in Alexandria, Egypt.  They joined other youth from Sudan, Ethiopia and Egypt in this project.  Before and after the month-long work camp, Ethel toured Europe in France, Switzerland, Germany, The Netherlands, and Venice, Florence, Pisa, and Rome, Italy. She also explored Alexandria, Cairo, and Egyptian pyramids.  Later, Ethel and Norm traveled extensively in the US, Scotland, Scandinavia, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Hong Kong, Taipei, and Taiwan. 

The Winteroth family visited Ethel and Norm many times throughout the years.  A highlight for nieces Kathleen and Suzanne were trips to the tide pools near Bolinas, along with trips to Stinson Beach and Point Reyes National Seashore.  Both nieces visited Ethel's 1st grade classes to observe and help during their mid-year college breaks.  Over time, education discussions were often held after dinner.  This is a family of teachers, starting with Ethel and Doris' mother, Doris and Ethel, Kathleen and Suzanne, Kathleen's former husband, and her great niece Amelia.

Ethel was predeceased by her father Ralf Wilson Galloway, mother Alice Luana Christensen Galloway, an infant brother Eldon Lorraine Galloway, and her husband Norman W. Vaughan.  She is survived by her sister Doris Lucile Galloway Winteroth (Norton, nieces Kathleen Winteroth Hursh (Estes Park, CO, Suzanne Winteroth Goff (Meriden, CT, Carolyn O'Brien Vertucca (Concord, CA, and nephew Charles O'Brien (Concord, CA, grand nephews and nieces Asa Hursh (Los Angeles, CA, Austin Hursh (Rochester, NY, Amelia Goff Young (Meriden, CT) and Allie Goff (Bethany, CT, and great-grand nieces and nephew Corinne Hursh (Los Angeles, CA) Cleo Hursh (Los Angeles, CA) and Bear Young (Meriden, CT) along with many friends throughout her life.

A service is postponed until it is safe for family and friends to gather and celebrate her life. Ethel Luana (Galloway) Vaughan

Gloria Ann Wilson, 76, La Crosse, Kansas, died Wednesday, May 27, 2020, at her home.

Gloria was born April 8, 1944, in Hays, Kansas, the daughter of 
George and Alberta (Huber) Helget.&nbsp; She was a resident of La Crosse, 
Kansas, for 50+ years, moving from Ellis County, Kansas.&nbsp; A 1962 
graduate of Ellis High School, Ellis, Kansas, she worked as a secretary 
at both Producers Gas Equities, Inc., Hays, Kansas, and Flame 
Engineering, La Crosse, Kansas.&nbsp; She also worked alongside her husband, 
B.J. as a farm wife and homemaker.

Gloria was a volunteer at A Second Chance, La Crosse, Kansas, having 
been there over 20 years.&nbsp; She worked the Saturday morning shift for at 
least the last 17 years.&nbsp; She also served as an Executive Board member 
for A Second Chance.&nbsp; She was an avid reader, and volunteered at Barnard
 Library, La Crosse, Kansas. At fair time, she could be found 
volunteering at the Rush County Fair.&nbsp; Gloria was a talented seamstress,
 and loved to sew.

On October 29, 1968, she married Robert J. “B.J.” Wilson at La Crosse, Kansas.&nbsp; He preceded her in death July 15, 2006.

Survivors include:&nbsp; her brother, Robert “Bob” Helget (Bernie, Hays, 
Kansas; her nephews and nieces; great nephews and nieces; and great 
great nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and one brother, Gary Helget.

There will be a private graveside memorial service and inurnment at a later date.

In lieu of flowers or plants, the family requests memorials to the 
Barnard Library, La Crosse, Kansas, or the Rush County Fair, or the

George and Alberta (Huber) Helget.&nbsp; She was a resident of La Crosse, 
Kansas, for 50+ years, moving from Ellis County, Kansas.&nbsp; A 1962 
graduate of Ellis High School, Ellis, Kansas, she worked as a secretary 
at both Producers Gas Equities, Inc., Hays, Kansas, and Flame 
Engineering, La Crosse, Kansas.&nbsp; She also worked alongside her husband, 
B.J. as a farm wife and homemaker.Gloria was a volunteer at A Second Chance, La Crosse, Kansas, having 
been there over 20 years.&nbsp; She worked the Saturday morning shift for at 
least the last 17 years.&nbsp; She also served as an Executive Board member 
for A Second Chance.&nbsp; She was an avid reader, and volunteered at Barnard
 Library, La Crosse, Kansas. At fair time, she could be found 
volunteering at the Rush County Fair.&nbsp; Gloria was a talented seamstress,
 and loved to sew.On October 29, 1968, she married Robert J. “B.J.” Wilson at La Crosse, Kansas.&nbsp; He preceded her in death July 15, 2006.Survivors include:&nbsp; her brother, Robert “Bob” Helget (Bernie, Hays, 
Kansas; her nephews and nieces; great nephews and nieces; and great 
great nephews and nieces.She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and one brother, Gary Helget.There will be a private graveside memorial service and inurnment at a later date.In lieu of flowers or plants, the family requests memorials to the

Gloria Ann Wilson

Wilma Jean “Jeannie” Bailey, 90, of Hays, Kansas and formerly of Russell, Kansas, passed away Friday, May 29, 2020 at the Via Christ Village in Hays.

Jeannie was born December 20, 1929 on the family farm in Barton County, Kansas.&nbsp; She was one of seventeen children to Henry and Mollie (Miller) Wilhelm.&nbsp; She grew up on the farm in northern Barton County and attended country schools.

Jeannie was united in marriage to Jerry Dean Bailey on February 25, 1949 in Russell, Kansas.&nbsp; This union was blessed with three children; Cynthia, Douglas and Stanley.&nbsp; Jerry preceded her in death on August 4, 1996.

Jeannie was a waitress for many years in Russell.&nbsp; She worked at the Russell Elks Lodge and the Russell V.F.W.&nbsp; She also cleaned homes in Russell.&nbsp; She was a member of the St. John Lutheran Church.&nbsp; She was a dog and cat lover.&nbsp; She enjoyed fishing, cooking and was known for making noodles and fried chicken, and spending time with her family.

Jeannie’s surviving family include her son, Douglas Bailey of Dallas, Texas; daughter, Cynthia Henning (Tim) of Russell, Kansas; five grandchildren, six great grandchildren and 12 great-great grandchildren.&nbsp; She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, nine brothers and seven sisters.

Helena Ann Ubelaker, 92, of Osborne, KS passed away on Thursday, May 
28, 2020, at Parkview Care Center. &nbsp;She was born on December 27, 1927, to 
Nicholas &amp; Helena (Arnoldy) Boden of Tipton, KS. &nbsp;She was one of 
several children.

Helena's schooling took her as far as 8th grade. &nbsp;She later married James F. Ubelaker &amp; to this union 4 children were born.

Helena was a school cook at the Bloomington school. &nbsp;She was also a 
meat clerk at Howe's Market, Town &amp; Country Market &amp; Girard's, 
all of Osborne, KS.

Helena was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Jim in 2012 and one grandson, Jim C. Smith in 1982.

Helena is survived by daughters: Sandy (Greg) Smith of Hays, KS; Judy
 (Joe) Gasper of Tipton, KS; sons: Doug (Linda) Ubelaker of Osborne, KS;

Viola C. Rowe, 102, of Russell, Kansas, passed away Monday, June 1, 2020 at Main Street Manor in Russell.

The daughter of Jesse L. “Tobe” and Eula (McDonald) Robinson. Viola was born on October 23,

1917, in Drumright, Oklahoma. On August 24, 1940, she married Ivan E. Rowe in McAlester, Oklahoma.

Preceding
 her in death were her parents, husband Ivan on December 01, 2000; two 
sisters Frankie Davis Ruble and Joyce Lee Yandell. Surviving family include several nieces and nephews.

At
 her request there will be no viewing of the body or no funeral service.
 Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice. 
Burial will be at the Holdenville City Cemetery in Holdenville, 
Oklahoma. Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, Kansas, is in

assigned to submarines. She loved the outdoors and listening to music. 
Marcia was preceded in death by her parents, Harold and Mary Hoft and her grandparents, Ben and Martha Hoft. 
She is survived by her children, Rachel Matzek, Tanner Matzek, Sam 
(Heather) Matzek and Jay Matzek; her brothers, Mike (Noreen) Hoft, Terry

Marcia Hoft Matzek

James “Toby” Tobin Johnson Jr., 85, Lake of the Forrest, Bonner Springs, KS, passed away on May 18, 2020, surrounded by family and friends.


Toby was born November 9, 1934, in Hutchinson, KS, to James Tobin Sr.
 and Katherine (George) Johnson. He graduated from Abilene High School 
in 1952. He next went on to Fort Hays State University, where he was a 
dynamite athlete. Three-sport letterman, making school history in 
football, basketball, and track, but Toby always said four, including 
baseball. He was proud of his athletic accomplishments. Football and 
basketball- 3-year starter, 4-year lettermen, 2nd team all-conference, 
all American honorable mention, and held the school record for pole 
vault and javelin. His college athletic career ended in 1957 when he 
graduated from FHSU.


Toby was a high school football coach, teacher, and a business owner.


He was a member of St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church in Hays, 
KS, sponsored a Seniors Golf Tournament in Ellinwood, KS, and was 
Commissioner of the Wheat Bowl.


Toby leaves behind his wife, Marty (McKee) Johnson; daughters 
Jill Puetz (Ken) of Salina, KS and Kappy Park (Scott) of Prairie 
Village, KS, son Jay Johnson (Lisa) of Las Vegas NV; 7 step children; 7 
grandchildren; 11 step grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; 3 step 
great grandchildren; brother Mike Johnson (Gwen) of Abilene; and 
multiple nieces and nephews.


He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife Carolyn Johnson; wife Joanna Johnson; sister Mary Virginia Kriwiel.


A Celebration of Life will be held at a future date.

James 'Toby' Tobin Johnson Jr.

Andrew "Andy" MacGregor Jones, age 74, of Collyer, Kansas, passed away at Gove County Medical Center on May 28, 2020, as a result of cancer. He was born on January 4, 1946, in Goodland, KS, to William David and Geneva (Mac) Evangeline (MacGregor) Jones.&nbsp;

He graduated in 1964 from Wallace County High School in Sharon Springs. He then attended Lamar Junior College for 2 years and completed his bachelor’s degree at Kansas State University in 1969. He worked in the Sublette feed yard and was drafted into the Army during the Vietnam conflict, where he served stateside as a veterinary specialist. He married Susan Rondeau in 1970 and spent most of this time in Fort Sill, OK. He was discharged in 1971.&nbsp;

&nbsp;In 1973, Andy heard and responded to the gospel and began his walk with the Lord. They had four children, Jamie, Jarad, Adrian, and Julie. He worked in various feed yards and in 1988 went to work for the Kansas Department of Agriculture as an inspector for ACAP. They were married from 1970 to 1991.

On March 5, 1994, he married Sondra Behrends of Grant, NE. In 1996 they moved south of Collyer, KS, and established a cow herd where he fulfilled a lifelong dream of backgrounding his own cattle and feeding cattle for others. He retired from the state in 2006 to work full time with his horses and cattle.

Andy enjoyed being a member of the Mr. Pleasant Baptist Church in Studley, KS, raising “good horses”, playing cards with his friends and family and talking with “everyone.” He most recently enjoyed trialing his beloved border collie. He loved the Lord, his family, and his friends.&nbsp;

Andy is survived by his brother, David Jones of Sharon Springs, and sisters Marietta (Don) Zimmerman of Timnath, CO, and Roxie Tucker of Copeland; Susan and their four children, sons Jarad Jones of Wister, OK, (Dana of Shawnee, OK) and Adrian Jones of Wellington, CO; daughters, Jamie Lerwick (Troy Blankingship) of McPherson, and Julie Buzard of Great Bend; Sondra and stepchildren, Jeff (Lisa) Behrends of Grant, NE, Stephanie (Troy) Ramsey of Virginia Beach, VA, and Steven (Joni) Behrends of Chadron, NE; 10 grandchildren, 9 step-grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren, and 2 step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William David, and Geneva (MacGregor) Jones and a brother-in-law, Steve Tucker.

Visitation will be Thursday, June 4, 2020, from 9:30 AM to service time at the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, 14998 E Rd 70 S Studley, KS.

Andrew 'Andy' MacGregor Jones

Barbara D. Seltmann, 69, Gladstone, Missouri, formerly of Hays, died Sunday, March 22, 2020, at Liberty Health and Wellness Skilled Nursing in Liberty, Missouri.

She was born May 2, 1950, in LaCrosse, Kansas, the daughter of Orlando and Vera (Kopsky) Peach.&nbsp; On August 7, 1970, she was united in marriage to Douglas L. Seltmann in LaCrosse, and they were married 42 years before he preceded her in death on February 4, 2013.&nbsp; She lived in Kansas for 55 years.&nbsp; In 2005, she moved to Liberty, Missouri, living there for five years.&nbsp; In 2010, she moved back to Kansas, and in 2016 she moved back to Missouri, the state she loved.

Survivors include her soulmate; Lee Lewis of Gladstone, MO, her father; Orlando Peach of LaCrosse, a daughter; Deana Rohn and husband Edgar of Cancun, Mexico, three sons; Richard “Ricky” Seltmann and girlfriend Melissa of Hays, Ronnie Seltmann and wife Mary of Liberty, MO, and Ryan Seltmann and wife Melissa of Hays, two brothers; John Peach and wife Connie of Springfield, MO and Frank Peach and wife Kim of LaCrosse, four sisters; Kathryn LaVerne Herrman and husband Kenny of Liebenthal, Rhonda Holloway of LaCrosse, Jeri Diehl and husband Ronnie of Jetmore and Mary Kay Schuckman and husband Irvin of Jetmore, four grandchildren; Megan, Morgan, Tyler, and Mallory, four great grandchildren; Miriya, Josh, Cadyn, and Kash, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Seltmann, 69, Gladstone, Missouri, formerly of Hays, died Sunday, March 22, 2020, at Liberty Health and Wellness Skilled Nursing in Liberty, Missouri.She was born May 2, 1950, in LaCrosse, Kansas, the daughter of Orlando and Vera (Kopsky) Peach.&nbsp; On August 7, 1970, she was united in marriage to Douglas L. Seltmann in LaCrosse, and they were married 42 years before he preceded her in death on February 4, 2013.&nbsp; She lived in Kansas for 55 years.&nbsp; In 2005, she moved to Liberty, Missouri, living there for five years.&nbsp; In 2010, she moved back to Kansas, and in 2016 she moved back to Missouri, the state she loved.Survivors include her soulmate; Lee Lewis of Gladstone, MO, her father; Orlando Peach of LaCrosse, a daughter; Deana Rohn and husband Edgar of Cancun, Mexico, three sons; Richard “Ricky” Seltmann and girlfriend Melissa of Hays, Ronnie Seltmann and wife Mary of Liberty, MO, and Ryan Seltmann and wife Melissa of Hays, two brothers; John Peach and wife Connie of Springfield, MO and Frank Peach and wife Kim of LaCrosse, four sisters; Kathryn LaVerne Herrman and husband Kenny of Liebenthal, Rhonda Holloway of LaCrosse, Jeri Diehl and husband Ronnie of Jetmore and Mary Kay Schuckman and husband Irvin of Jetmore, four grandchildren; Megan, Morgan, Tyler, and Mallory, four great grandchildren; Miriya, Josh, Cadyn, and Kash, and numerous nieces and nephews.She was preceded in death by her mother; Vera, husband; Doug, a granddaughter; Merlynna, an infant brother; Richard, two infant sisters; Donna and Patricia, and a brother-in-law; Topper Holloway.Graveside services were held at Mount Allen Cemetery, Hays.&nbsp; Memorials are suggested to the Seltmann family made payable to Ronald Seltmann, in care of Hays Memorial Chapel, 1906 Pine Street, Hays.&nbsp; Condolences and memories of Barbara may be shared with the family at www.haysmemorial.com&nbsp;

Thomas Eugene Hickel, 58, passed away May 30, 2020, at his home in 
Great Bend. He was born on September 10, 1961 at Ellinwood, to Charles 
&amp; Gloria Ann (Thill) Hickel. He married Rita Axman on February 17, 
1990, at Olmitz. She survives.

A lifetime Barton county resident, Tom was a fab tech for Roto-Mix. 
He was a member of Prince of Peace parish in Great Bend, the NRA, 
American Prostate Cancer Foundation, and a participant in Relay for 
Life. He was an avid Nascar fan, always rooting on Chase Elliott and 
Jeff Gordon. Tom enjoyed deer, turtle and coyote hunting. He was a 
hardworking family man, always enjoying spending time with his family, 
and his grandchildren were his prized possession.

Survivors include, his wife, Rita Hickel of the home; a son, Carl 
Hickel and wife Bailey of Midland, Tex.; two daughters, Reba Kohn and 
husband Kyle of Kinsley, and Tana Yellowwolf and husband Micah of Great 
Bend; two brothers, Donald Hickel, and James Hickel and wife Sheryl, all
 of Claflin; a sister, Deborah Mills of Great Bend; lifelong friend, 
James Doeden; and 3 grandchildren, Charlee Yellowwolf, Kade Kohn, and 
Holden Hickel. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a grandson, 
Levi Kohn.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 9:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 2, 2020
 at Bryant Funeral Home, with family present from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., and
 Vigil service at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 
10:30 a.m., Wednesday, June 3, 2020, at Sts. Peter &amp; Paul Church, 
rural Ellinwood. Interment will be in Sts. Peter &amp; Paul Cemetery,

Arlen Francis Ruhnke, 67, passed away on Friday, May 29, 2020 at his home in Long Island, KS. Arlen was born on June 12, 1952 to Douglas and Florence (Albers) Ruhnke in Troy, KS where he lived most of his life.

Vernon L. Steerman, 90, of Alton, KS, formerly of Osborne, KS, passed
 away on Monday, May 25, 2020 at the Osborne County Memorial Hospital. 
&nbsp;He was born on November 16, 1929 at Riley, KS to Leo &amp; Ora (Miller)
 Steerman.

Vernon was a veteran of the United States Air Force. &nbsp;He was a LT. 
Colonel in the JAG during the Korean War &amp; Vietnam War. &nbsp;He later 
served as&nbsp;an Osborne County Attorney.

Vernon married Vivian M. Brummer and to this union 3 daughters were born.

Vernon was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Vivian in 2019.

Lee Edward “Ed” Depperschmidt, 85, Rush Center, Kansas, died Saturday, May 23, 2020, at Pleasant View Home, Inman, Kansas.

Ed was born April 16, 1935, in rural Liebenthal, Kansas, the son of 
Marcus and Magdalena E. (Herrman) Depperschmidt.&nbsp; He was a resident of 
Rush County, Kansas, for 40+ years, moving from Norfolk, Virginia.&nbsp;

He served in the United States Marine Corps for 20 years and was 
proud to be a veteran.&nbsp; During his military career, he served two tours 
of duty in Vietnam, and was a member of Marine Helicopter Squadron One 
(HMX-1).&nbsp; HMX-1 is responsible for the transportation of the president 
and vice president of the United States, heads of states, Department of 
Defense officials, and other VIPs as directed by the Marine Corps and 
White House Military Office.&nbsp; Upon his retirement from the Marine Corps,
 he co-owned and operated Depperschmidt Steel Siding with his son, Paul 
Depperschmidt.

Ed’s hobbies included going to the casinos, yard work, mowing with 
his riding lawn mower, old cars, and time spent with his grandchildren 
and great grandchildren.&nbsp; He loved that he shared a birthday with his 
youngest great granddaughter, Demi.

On July 21, 1961, he married Mary Cox at Las Vegas, Nevada.&nbsp; She preceded him in death July 4, 1995.

Survivors include: &nbsp;one son, Paul Depperschmidt (Starla Parker, La 
Crosse, Kansas; one daughter, Janice Mohler (Kevin, Bella Vista, 
Arkansas; six grandchildren, Valerie Avila, Grapevine, Texas, Andrew 
Depperschmidt, La Crosse, Kansas, Jacob “Jake” Depperschmidt, Garden 
City, Kansas, Torre Shultz, Holcomb, Kansas, McCashen Mohler, Garden 
City, Kansas, and Desmaranda Carver, Anderson, Missouri; seven great 
grandchildren, Jairdan Mohler, Jenasie Mohler, and Breckyn Shultz, all 
of Holcomb, Kansas, Gannon Mohler, Bentlee Beavers, and Demi Beavers, 
all of Garden City, Kansas, and Gabriel Avila, Grapevine, Texas; one 
brother, Dennis Depperschmidt, La Crosse, Kansas, and one sister, JoAnn 
Fincher, La Crosse, Kansas.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary 
Depperschmidt; an infant daughter, Peggy Kay Depperschmidt; three 
brothers, Gerald Depperschmidt, LaVern Depperschmidt, and Charles 
“Charlie” Depperschmidt; and four sisters, Rosie Krom, Mary Alice

Gerald Henry “Jerry” Hickert, 89, Hays,
 former longtime Jennings, Kansas farmer and stockman, passed away 
Thursday, May 28, 2020 at HaysMed.

He was born Sunday, April 26, 1931 on 
the family farm near Clayton, Kansas, the son of Aloysius Michael “Babe”
 and Josephine Fernunda “Joey” (Nusse) Hickert, the fourth of five 
children.&nbsp; Jerry graduated from Jennings High School in 1949.&nbsp; He was 
drafted into military service with the United States Army and served his
 country in Japan during the Korean Conflict as a teletype operator.&nbsp; On
 April 11, 1959 he was united in marriage to Marcella Theresa Boor in 
Seguin, Kansas, and they were married 61 years.&nbsp; To this union, three 
children were born:&nbsp; Debra, Darrell and Diane.&nbsp; Jerry and Marcella 
farmed southeast of Jennings for 33 years, and in 1992 they retired and 
moved to Hays.&nbsp; Jerry “retired” again from Quest Diagnostics of Hays, 
where he was employed as a courier. &nbsp;He loved animals and farming, and 
thoroughly enjoyed working the land, growing grain, raising cattle and 
hogs, and in his retirement years, gardening, especially flowers.&nbsp; Jerry
 could rebuild or fix anything, large or small, and he enjoyed playing 
the guitar.

Survivors include his wife; Marcella of
 the home, three children; Debra Dix of Stockton, Darrell (Shirley) 
Hickert of Oberlin, and Diane Hickert of Hays, four grandchildren, nine 
great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, two sisters; Noreen 
Crabill of Norton and Charlene Goscha of Oakley, a brother; Fred 
(Majella) Hickert of Hays, his sisters-in-law and brothers-in law; Leona
 Boor of Hays, Susan Boor of Hutchinson, Luella Linnebur of Bel Aire, 
Leon (Mary Jo) Boor of Abilene, and Jeannie (Jerry) Patterson of 
Wakefield, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his 
parents, a brother; Quinten “Squire” Hickert, nine brothers-in-law;
