Mitchell A. 'Mitch' Berens

Officer Mitchell  A. “Mitch” Berens, age 52, died Friday, August 28, 2020,  at Hays Medical Center.   He was born August 21,1968, in Hays, Kansas to Vernon L. and Norma Jean (Kuhn) Berens.  He married Tisha Dawn (Sader) on August 30, 2019, at Abilene, Kansas.

He was a Sergeant with the Hays Police Department for 25 years and retired in June of 2020.  He attended the KLETC Police Academy in Hutchinson, Kansas, he received his Bachelor Degree at Fort Hays State University, and also was on the football team.  He grew up in Victoria, Kansas and was a 1987 graduate of Victoria High School.  Mitch enjoyed fishing, golfing, and spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife, Tisha Berens, of the home; one son, Shane Berens and Angel Bryant, Gorham, KS; one daughter, Shelbie Berens and Kevin Keith, Wichita, KS; his mother, Norma Jean Berens, Hays, KS; two brothers, Michael Berens, Victoria, KS; Matthew Berens and wife, A.J., Hays, KS; one sister, Michelle Tuma and husband, Larry, Overland Park, KS;  his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Lyal and Julie Sader, Hays, KS; one step-son, Seth Bielefeld, Manhattan, KS; one step-daughter, Megan Bielefeld, Junction City, KS; a number of uncles, aunts, nephews and nieces. 

He was preceded in death by his father, one sister, Milissa Rae Berens and grandparents.      

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, September 2, 2020, at The Basilica of St. Fidelis, Victoria, Kansas.  Burial will be in St. Ann’s Cemetery, Walker, Kansas.    

Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Tuesday, at Cline’s-Keithley Mortuary of Hays, 1919 East 22nd Street, Hays, Kansas and from 9:00 to 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, at The Basilica of St. Fidelis, Victoria, Kansas.  

A vigil service will be at 7:00 P.M. Tuesday, at Cline’s-Keithley Mortuary of Hays.

The family suggests memorials to the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge # 48.
