Doyle Dawson Miller, after a yearlong bout with cancer, passed away on June 1, 2020 at his home in Branson, Mo. at the age of 66 years.

He was born on December 14, 1953 in Russell, Kansas, the son of Maxwell S. and Vivian Dawson Miller. He graduated from Russell High School and Ft. Hays State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education. His early career started with law enforcement including the WaKeeney, KS Police Department. Eventually, retiring from  law enforcement, he turned professional to his love of music. Throughout his career Doyle performed with musical groups such as Les Brown and the Band of Renown; Tommy Dorsey Orchestra; Harry James Orchestra; Les Elgart Orchestra; Sammy Kaye Orchestra; Russ Morgan Orchestra and Bobby Vinton with the Glenn Miller Orchestra.

Eventually moving to Branson in 2004, Doyle played in many theaters and shows including The All Hands On Deck! Show; Silver Dollar City – Worldfest; The Rat Pack – A Tribute to Frank, Dean &amp; Sammy; Les Brown and The Band Of Renown; The Rat Pack Is Back! (From Las Vegas); Branson Jubilee; The Magnificent Seven and Swing, Swing, Swing. He has also worked or recorded with celebrities such as Bob Hope; Andy Williams; The Lettermen; Shirley Jones; Marie Osmond; Jimmy Osmond; Merrill Osmond; Mannheim Steamroller; Little Anthony and The Imperials; John Davidson; Jack Jones; Lee Greenwood; The Lennon Sisters; Jan Daley; Gloria Loring; Fred Travalena and the St. Louis Jazz Orchestra. Prior to moving to Branson, Doyle worked for Carnival Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean Cruise Line playing lead trumpet in their show bands touring around the world. He was a member of&nbsp;Hays Masonic Lodge #195.

Doyle is survived by his three children, Max, and wife Angela, Hays, KS; Joe, and wife Sheila, Marana, AZ; and daughter Cathie Thon and husband Ryan, Lawrence, KS. His fiancée, Betty Smith, Branson, MO, and siblings Gwen Johnson, Hays, KS; Tim &amp; Linda Miller, Hays, KS; and sister Emilie Miller, Chicago. Four Chandchildren, Lucas, Corbin, Meredith and Madeleine. Brother-in-law, Dwayne Kunzler, St. Joseph, MO. He is also survived by nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by parents and his sister Marilyn (Kunzler) Miller.

A Celebration of Life service for Doyle will be held at a later date in Russell, Kansas.

American Legion Post #99. In his spare time, he enjoyed constructing 
model airplanes. Clyde’s surviving family include his wife of 44 
years, Fanny Cecilia of the home; three daughters, Ranae Leaverton of 
Phoenix, Arizona, Lisa Raypold (Peter) of Anchorage, Alaska and Elina 
Michel of Phoenix, Arizona; sister, Shirley Brown (Myron) of Oklahoma; 
and five grandchildren, Douglass Raypold, Branden Raypold, Catherine

Carla Sue Geyer, age 61, passed away on Wednesday, June 3, 2020 in Colorado Springs, Colorado.&nbsp; She was born on January 9, 1959 in Garden City, Kansas, the daughter of Theodore &amp; Darlene Strasser Graff.&nbsp; A lifetime resident of Wichita County, Kansas, she was the owner and operator of Associated Services Insurance Agency in Leoti, Kansas for 20 years. She is a member of the St. Mary Catholic Church and the Alter Society both of Marienthal, Kansas. On June 9, 1979, she married Daniel Geyer in Marienthal, Kansas.&nbsp; He survives. Sharon Lee Conway, 83, of Osborne, KS passed away at Parkview Care 
Center in Osborne, KS. on Wed. June 3, 2020. She was born June 3, 1937 
to Vincent &amp; Roberta (Wheeler) Paschal at Osborne, KS.

She graduated from Osborne High School in 1955 and&nbsp;later married John
 T. Conway. To this union 3 children were born. &nbsp;She lived in the 
Osborne area all her life.&nbsp;

Sharon was a homemaker. Yet, in 1986 she became the&nbsp;Librarian for the
 Osborne Public Library. &nbsp;In 2002, she went to part-time Librarian until
 she retired in 2013.

She&nbsp;was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, John in 2013.

Sharon is survived by her daughter, Shelly (Randy) Roach of Alton, 
KS; 2 sons: John (Heidi Holland) Conway of Emporia, KS; Chris (Marsha 
Moroney) Conway of Leawood, KS; 9 grandchildren &amp; 16 
great-grandchildren.

Sharon Lee Conway

Donald Earl Johnson passed away on Thursday, April 23, 2020 at the Rooks
 County Health Center in Plainville, Kansas, at the age of 93. He was 
born on August 24, 1926 in Clay Center, Kansas to Oscar Johnson and 
Alice Arthur. Don grew up in Plainville and went to Plainville High 
School through 10th grade. In December of 1944, Don was drafted into the
 United States Army during World War II and was honorably discharged in 
November 16, 1946.


Don married his first wife, Joan (Bice) Johnson, on June 13, 1948 in
 Plainville. They were blessed with three children: Forest, Sue and 
Sarah. Joan passed away in 1986 after a battle with MS. He later met 
Marilyn Guthrie Spear at a dance and they married on August 9, 1997 in 
Norton, Kansas. Upon this union he was blessed with four step-children: 
Brian, David, Donita, and Tracy.


Don spent his life working as a rancher and a maintenance supervisor
 for the Presbyterian Manor in Wichita, Kansas. Don had a love of 
baseball as his father was a professional baseball player; he rarely 
missed watching the Royals play. He also liked KU Basketball and he 
loved to dance and play golf. 


Don belonged to the First Christian Church in Plainville and was a 
Deacon in previous years. He was a VFW Post #8871 commander for three 
years, and was the last charter member.


He is survived by his wife Marilyn of the home in Plainville; 
daughters, Gladys “Sue” Hays and husband Lee of Overland Park, KS, and 
Sarah Plunk and husband Cleon of Coweta, OK; step-children, David Spear 
and wife Diane of Jennings, OK, Donita Kaare and husband John of Olney, 
IL, and Tracy Orr and husband Gary of Oberlin, KS; three grandchildren, 
Rachel (David) Pittner, Ryan (Mary) Hays, and Nickolas Johnson; and 
three great-grandchildren, Jake Pittner, Jamie Pittner, and Noah 
Johnson.


Don is preceded in death by his parents, Oscar Johnson and Alice 
Arthur; first wife, Joan Johnson; son Forest Johnson; and step-son, 
Brian Spear.


A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, June 27, 2020 at 11 A.M. at the First Christian Church in Plainville.&nbsp;

Donald Earl Johnson

Betty Jo (Day) Banks was born February 26, 1933 in Washington, KS to 
Everett E. &amp; Louisa (Durst) Day. &nbsp;She passed away on May 30, 2020 at
 the Downs Care &amp; Rehab facility in Downs, KS.

Betty Jo attended &amp; graduated high school in Colorado Springs, CO
 before attending the University of Colorado with plans to study 
criminal law. &nbsp;Plans were changed when Dale A. Banks gave her a wink! 
&nbsp;They were married at the Rose Valley Methodist Church on December 2, 
1951. &nbsp;Betty Jo stayed busy raising 3 daughters, as well as helping 
start Kindergarten classes in Downs, working as a Stanley Home Products 
representative &amp; working with the county extension helping teach 
young housewives homemaking skills. &nbsp;She then became Activiites Director
 at Mid America Nursing Home in Downs. &nbsp;She continued to study &amp; 
received her Nursing Home Administrator's license &amp; began as 
administrator at Parkview Care Center in Osborne, a job that she held 
for over 30 yeas until her retirement in 2012.

Betty Jo was a member of the Downs United Methodist Church where she 
served as lay leader, choir director &amp; Sunday School teacher. &nbsp;She 
was also involved with the Miss Solomon Valley beauty pageant as well as
 Kansas Junior Miss ....not only helping different young ladies 
in&nbsp;&nbsp;aspirations to be the Kansas Junior Miss .... but some years also 
judging the event. &nbsp;She has also been active in the Downs Lions Club as 
well as their District &amp; State programs. &nbsp;She is also a member of 
the VFW Auxiliary in Osborne.

Betty Jo's love of God &amp; music led her to lead several singing 
groups: The Highlighters, The Challengers &amp; the North Central 
Christian Choir (30 years as their director). &nbsp;Betty Jo had a love for 
music but it took second place to the love of her life, her husband, 
Dale. &nbsp;They had many good years together &amp; many memories&nbsp;of the 
dances they went to as well as the other couples that attended also. 
&nbsp;Her 3 daughters brought her much joy in life, but, Bekki, Pearl, &amp; 
Bugs....kept her on her toes!

Declining health placed her in the Downs Nursing Home (so she could 
be closer for Dalene to visit) in January 2020. &nbsp;She was able to 
continue to touch lives of several she had mentored through the years.

Betty Jo was preceded in death by: her parents; husband, Dale A.; 
eldest daughter, Rebecca Louise; sisters, Vivian McAuley, Anita Rieke 
(and husband, Willard); brother, George Houdek (and wife, Dorothy); 
&amp; nephew, Terry Rieke.

She is survived by: daughters, Joyce Pearl Wiskur of Harrisonville, 
MO, &amp; Dalene A. Banks of Downs; grandchildren, Sarah Jo (Wiskur) 
Cook &amp; friend, Greg &amp; Wesley Dale (Michelle) Wiskur; as well as 2
 great-grandchildren, Keaton A. Cook &amp; Waylon Dale Wiskur; 
sister-in-law, Lois (Banks) McElroy; nieces, Charla (Jon) Bannett &amp; 
Susan (Ronald) Moxham; close family friend, Rhonda (Roy) Atwood &amp; 
various cousins &amp; other relatives. &nbsp;In lieu of flowers, the family

served as lay leader, choir director &amp; Sunday School teacher. &nbsp;She 
was also involved with the Miss Solomon Valley beauty pageant as well as
 Kansas Junior Miss ....not only helping different young ladies 
in&nbsp;&nbsp;aspirations to be the Kansas Junior Miss .... but some years also 
judging the event. &nbsp;She has also been active in the Downs Lions Club as 
well as their District &amp; State programs. &nbsp;She is also a member of 
the VFW Auxiliary in Osborne.Betty Jo's love of God &amp; music led her to lead several singing 
groups: The Highlighters, The Challengers &amp; the North Central 
Christian Choir (30 years as their director). &nbsp;Betty Jo had a love for 
music but it took second place to the love of her life, her husband, 
Dale. &nbsp;They had many good years together &amp; many memories&nbsp;of the 
dances they went to as well as the other couples that attended also. 
&nbsp;Her 3 daughters brought her much joy in life, but, Bekki, Pearl, &amp; 
Bugs....kept her on her toes!Declining health placed her in the Downs Nursing Home (so she could 
be closer for Dalene to visit) in January 2020. &nbsp;She was able to 
continue to touch lives of several she had mentored through the years.Betty Jo was preceded in death by: her parents; husband, Dale A.; 
eldest daughter, Rebecca Louise; sisters, Vivian McAuley, Anita Rieke 
(and husband, Willard); brother, George Houdek (and wife, Dorothy);

Logan resident Thelma Bushnell passed away June 2, 2020 at the 
Benton House Assisted Living in Blue Springs, MO at the age of 87.&nbsp; She 
was born Aug. 3, 1932 in Logan, the daughter of George &amp; Elsie 
(Radloff) Wallgren.

Survivors include her daughter, Lisa Littrell of Lees Summit, MO; 2 
sisters, Peggy Mitchell of Wichita &amp; Helen Sigwing of Dallas, TX; 5 
grandchildren &amp; 5 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 6 at 1:00 p.m. in the 
United Methodist Church, Logan, with Pastor Ted Stapleton officiating.

Robert Allen “Bob” Smith was born in rural Lenora, Kansas, to his 
parents Lawrence &amp; Alice (Ford) Smith on October 19, 1940. As his 
mother had been told she would be unable to bear a child, when Bob was 
born, the doctor called him a miracle. Many years later, a longtime 
family friend would remark to him, “It was just a shame you grew out of 
it.” Bob spent his early years roaming the creek that flowed by his 
family home, always ready for a surprise attack by a bear (which usually
 turned out to be a tree stump, albeit a very threatening one). He was 
raised by his parents &amp; his paternal uncle, John Smith, on the farm 
his family originally homesteaded in 1879. Bob was a much-beloved &amp; 
frequently spoiled only child, though even in his elder years, he held a
 grudge against his Uncle John for allowing Bob’s mother to keep his 
hair worn in the golden yellow ringlet curls she doted on. His love of 
hunting emerged early, &amp; he claimed to have shot &amp; killed a 
rooster pheasant with a .22 rifle at the age of four. Although most 
certainly coincidental, no one remembered hearing this tall tale until 
well after anyone who could’ve confirmed this story had long since 
passed from this earthly plane.
 Bob was always a curious &amp; intellectually gifted child (or so he
 insisted to those who knew him, &amp; he somehow convinced his 
teachers to allow him to skip the third grade. He graduated from Lenora 
High School at the age of 16. Bob then went on to attend Fort Hays State
 University, eventually earning degrees in English, history, &amp; 
teaching. He was first certified as a high school teacher, but was 
shortly thereafter also certified as an elementary school teacher. 
Throughout his career, he taught at many schools in the area including 
Edmond, Lenora, &amp; Clayton, as well as the Norton Correctional 
Facility.

Bob met his wife Debra Ann “Debbie” Rogers on the side of a mountain
 outside of Fairplay, Colorado, &amp; in mere weeks cajoled her into 
pledging her troth to him. He claimed to have batted his baby blues 
&amp; gifted her a new deer rifle, after which, he insisted she was 
putty in his hands. They married in February, 1976, &amp; made their 
home on his family’s farm. In 1977, they welcomed the birth of their 
first daughter Tawny (Smith) Voyles, followed in 1980 with their second 
daughter, Lacey Smith. Their third daughter, Jeannie Smith, was born to 
them in 1982.


Bob was very community-minded &amp; was involved in many activities 
in Norton County including acting as a founding member of the Solomon 
Valley Rural Fire Department, the long-term secretary of Lenora Rural 
Fire Department, a community leader of the Good Hope Boosters 4-H club, 
was on the program development committee with the Kansas Extension 
Service, &amp; was a member of the Norton County Fair board. He was a 
lifelong member of the National Rifle Association &amp; taught hunter’s 
safety classes to local children &amp; adults for many years. Bob also 
devoted time to helping those in need in the community by assisting 
businesses &amp; organizations in northwest Kansas to understand &amp; 
comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act.


Although his physical mobility was limited in recent years, Bob 
loved to keep in touch with friends &amp; relatives from all over the 
country. He prided himself on his excellent memory, &amp; constantly 
delighted in remembering the most obscure (and altogether meaningless) 
details from decades ago. He could readily tell you who sat 3 seats left
 and 1 seat back from him in his Freshman English class at FHSU (not 
that anyone ever asked for that information). One could not easily think
 of Bob &amp; not remember his (warped, twisted, corny, &amp; 
ridiculous) sense of humor. He was always ready with a quick retort, an 
obscure reference, or a horrible pun, &amp; he was never shy about 
sharing it. His friends &amp; family made a habit of saving their most 
groan-worthy jokes, stories, &amp; plays-on-words for him.
 The family urges you to think of Bob as no longer in pain, free from
 the restrictions of his mortal body, &amp; causing trouble back behind 
the pearly gates where he joins his parents, his uncle John Smith, Uncle
 Harold &amp; Aunt Ethel Ford, his best friend, Frank Conklin, his 
youngest daughter, Jeannie, &amp; countless Airedale terriers (almost 
all of them named Whiskers).
 Bob specially requested to have no grand memorial service, rather 
just a graveside moment with a few very close family &amp; friends. The 
family respectfully requests no visits from loved ones, flowers, or food
 at this time, as it was important to Bob that everyone remain as safe 
as possible during the current pandemic. He is survived by his true 
love, Debbie, of the home, daughter Tawny (Jim) Voyles, Wichita, &amp; 
daughter Lacey, Lenora.

Robert Allen 'Bob' Smith

Edmund “Ed” Speer Moore, 96, Hays, died Friday, May 29, 2020 at HaysMed.

He was born August 11, 1923 in Manhattan, Kansas to Florence Speer Moore and Leo Albert Moore.

He graduated from Hays High School and then attended Fort Hays State prior to the United States entry into WWII.&nbsp; At his request, his mother signed for him so he could enlist in the United States Army Air Corps. He was a member of the 15th Air Force, 456th Bomber Squadron. The experience in the military was life changing for him and enduring bonds and friendships were forged. Based in Italy, he was a Crew Chief, Flight Engineer and Tail Gunner. He named one of his planes after movie star Diana Lynn and wrote a letter telling her so. She wrote back asking for a picture but by that time the plane had been shot down. He found a Crew whose plane was unnamed, and they agreed to let him paint the name “Diana Lynn” on theirs.

Upon the conclusion of the war he returned to Hays where he met and married Georgia

Wolfram. They celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary on May 1, 2020. In 1965 he and his wife established Moore Tours International, a travel agency that they would operate for the next 50 years. In 1977 Ed reached out to members of the 456th Bomber Squadron and begin planning a reunion. This would turn into an annual event that was held through 2015. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Hays, and he was a Deacon and Elder in the church.&nbsp; He was drawn to both people and animals and they were drawn to him. He was skilled at making all living things feel comfortable and valued.

He is survived by his wife Georgia of the home, son Ed, Excelsior Springs MO, daughter Renee Garrett (Steve Jorgensen) Hays, grandsons David Bendett (Amber) Corpus Christi TX, Greg Moore, Excelsior Springs MO, granddaughter Rachel Moore, Corpus Christi, TX and great grandchildren, Tristan Moore, and Cadence and Zion Bendett.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter-in-law Theresa Moore and a great-granddaughter Eden Bendett.

Energetic and engaging he was the finest of men. He lived a full and complete life, but for those of us who loved him it was still too short. We will honor him as he honored others, by caring for the living.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 am until 11:00 on Saturday, June 6, 2020 at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine Street, followed by a graveside service at Mt. Allen Cemetery with military honors by the Hays VFW Post #9076 Honor Guard. &nbsp;

Sharon (Phlieger) Braun, 71, of Surprise, Arizona passed away Monday 5/25/2020 at her home in Sun City Grand, Surprise, Arizona.&nbsp;

Sharon was born July 18, 1948 in Quinter, Kansas. Sharon was one of 4 children born to Pius A and Delores (Goetz) Phlieger. Sharon grew up on a farm south of Park, KS.&nbsp; She graduated from Park High School. She attended Fort Hays State after High School.&nbsp;

She married Jim Braun on February 23,1980, and celebrated their 40th anniversary this year.&nbsp; Sharon owned and operated Sharon’s Creations, a seasonal kiosk gift business with stores and kiosks in malls around the country during the Christmas season for 28 years. She was a Realtor in Surprise, AZ for a few years and retired in 2013.&nbsp;

Sharon enjoyed scrapbooking for her children &amp; grandchildren and playing Mah Jong with a multitude of friends!&nbsp;

Thelma Joan Karlin, 84, of Hays, KS 
passed away on June 1, 2020 at Via Christi Village, Hays.&nbsp; She was born 
April 8, 1936 in Catharine, KS to William R. and Pauline (Doerfler) 
Staab.&nbsp; On October 6, 1953, she was married to Joseph C. Karlin at St. 
Catherine Church in Catharine, KS.&nbsp; He preceded her in death on May 1, 
2011.

Thelma was a homemaker and seamstress.&nbsp;
 She was an avid sports fan and especially enjoyed following the Kansas 
City Royals and the Wichita State Shockers. She was also a member of the
 VFW Auxilliary.&nbsp; Family and friends will always remember her sweet 
smile.

Survivors include three daughters, 
Jeaninne Kaberlein (Bill, Coleen Shields, and Sue Taylor (Rob, all of

 at Brock's-Keithley Funeral Chapel and Crematory, 2509 Vine, Hays, KS

Arlen Francis Ruhnke, 67, went home to Jesus on Friday, May 29, 2020, at his home in Long Island, KS. 

Arlen was born on June 12, 1952, to Douglas and Florence (Albers) Ruhnke in Troy, KS where he lived most of his life. He graduated from Troy High School in 1970 and Missouri Western State College in 1974. 

After college, he worked several jobs including working for the REA as a lineman, worked for his dad at the NAPA store, built houses and was a rural mail carrier for 26 years, and ran his own farm north of Troy. 

After his retirement, he moved to Long Island, KS in 2013. He married Barbara Prawl on October 22, 1977. They have been married for 42 years. Together they raised 4 children. His family was his life and teaching his children and grandchildren to know Jesus was most important to him. 

He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Troy and the Norton Christian Church in Norton, KS where he was involved with the youth programs. He leaves behind a legacy of the Gospel of Christ. 

Arlen is preceded in death by his parents, Douglas and Florence Ruhnke, his brother Wayne Ruhnke, an unborn child, and an unborn grandchild. 

Survivors include his wife, Barb of the home, son Daniel and wife Selena, St. Joseph, MO, daughter Corinne and husband Clint, of Long Island, son Aaron and wife Jessica, of Topeka, KS, son Jay and wife Jennifer, of Las Vegas, NV, a sister Rosa Madison of Troy, KS, 13 grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, friends and relatives. 

A memorial service will be held at the Norton Christian Church, Norton, KS on Monday, June 1 at 10:30am. A graveside service will be held in Bendena, KS at Moray Cemetery on Wednesday June 3 at 1pm.

Dwane “Swede” W. Johnson of Hoxie, Kansas passed away on Saturday, April
 11, 2020 at the ComfortCare Home in Wichita, Kansas at the age of 68. 
He was born on November 12, 1951 in Lindsborg, Kansas to Ervin W. and 
Dagmar I. (Anderson) Johnson. He grew up on the family farm. Dwane 
attended a one room school, Mount Hope, through eighth grade and 
Lindsborg High School graduating with the class of 1969. During his four
 years of high school, he was a member of Future Farmers of America. 
After graduation from high school, Dwane attended Salina Area Vocational
 Technology School for two years. During his two years at Salina VoTech
 he was a member of the basketball team.
 Dwane married Martha Norman on August 7, 1971 in Salina, Kansas. 
They moved to Hoxie, Kansas where they made their home. They were 
blessed with a daughter and two sons. Dwane was employed by Hoxie 
Implement for forty-five years. During that time, he worked for them as
 a mechanic, shop foreman, in the parts department, and as a truck 
driver. He retired from the Implement dealership in 2016. Dwane was a 
Volunteer Fireman for forty-three years for Sheridan County Fire 
Department and served as Assistant Fire Chief for many years. He loved 
being able to serve his community.
 For fun and relaxation boating, camping, fishing and hunting were at
 the top of Dwane’s list. He especially enjoyed deer hunting with his 
family. Deer hunting was really a family affair, with family coming the
 first weekend of Deer Season and others staying for two weeks. He 
loved being and working outside in his garden or yard. Family was very 
important to Dwane. If a family member or friend needed a helping hand,
 he was always willing and ready to help. Dwane never knew a stranger 
and loved talking with everyone he met. The most important thing in his
 life was his family. He loved them dearly.
 Dwane is survived by his loving wife, Marty, of the home, Hoxie, 
Kansas; sons, Curtis Johnson and wife Megan of Kansas City, Missouri 
and Christopher Johnson and wife Sara of Hoxie, Kansas; daughter, Janine
 Foth &amp; husband Travis of Peabody, Kansas; brother, Dale Johnson 
and wife Rebecca of Bonners Ferry , Idaho ; sister, Colleen Lundstrom 
and husband Dave of Russellville, Missouri; grandchildren, Austin 
Sanders, Marcus Sanders, Nicole Sanders, Michelle Johnson, Trevor Foth 
(Rachael, Kortney Foth, Kayla Page, Jasmine Russell, Isabelle Parsons,

Glenn Richard “Rich” Werth, age 76, died June 1, 2020 at HaysMed.&nbsp; He
 was born on June 9, 1943 in Schoenchen to Frank F. and Lidwina 
(Tauscher) Werth.

Rich attended Schoenchen school, he lived many years in California 
working as a tool machinist, then returned home to Hays where he worked 
as a house painter.&nbsp; He loved early mornings, the outdoors, fishing, 
gambling, and beers at the Golden Q.

He married Roberta Schwab and from that union they were blessed with four children.&nbsp; They later divorced.

Survivors include two daughters:&nbsp; Kim (Jim) Lascola of McKinney, TX; 
Laura of CA; two sons:&nbsp; Glenn of Oxnard, CA; and Ricky of CA.&nbsp; Nine 
grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.&nbsp; His brothers:&nbsp; Ernie (Marlys) 
Werth of Schoenchen, KS; Steve Werth of Lancaster, CA; sisters:&nbsp; Laurine
 Werth of Hays, KS; MaryAnn Rendt of Wichita, KS; Genevieve Mendenhall 
of Wichita, KS; and Cheryl Kay Thomas of Hays, KS and many nieces and

Sammy Duane Busby, 76, of Colby, died Tuesday, May 26, 2020 at Prairie 
Senior Living Complex, Colby. He was born August 18, 1943, in St. 
Francis, KS, to Willard and Pauline (Trembly) Busby. Sammy graduated 
from St. Francis High School and served in the United States Air Force. 
After his time in the service he was an over the road truck driver. He 
also worked for several local farmers around Palco. Sammy enjoyed 
fishing, NASCAR, tinkering and doing leather work. 
He was preceded in death by his wife Judy (Cleveland) Busby; five brothers and one sister. 
He is survived by his children, Robert (Kathy) Blessing, David (Arvara) 
Blessing, Susan (Greg) Morey, Cindy (Danny) Diaz, Michelle (Mike) Weed 
and Ron (Sonya) Busby; sister, Sharon Busby; twelve grandchildren and 
five great grandchildren.

Illa Jean Balthazor passed away on Saturday, May 30, 2020 at the Trego 
County Lemke Memorial Hospital in WaKeeney, Kansas, at the age of 88. 
Illa was born on October 10, 1931 in Gridley, Kansas to Clarence and 
Hazel (Povenmire) Cokeley. She was raised in Palco, Kansas where she 
attended high school and graduated as Valedictorian of the Class of 
1949. Shortly after graduating, she was united in marriage to Jerome 
Balthazor at the St. Joseph Church in Damar, Kansas. They were blessed 
with 4 children: Gloria, Ronald, Donald, and Marty.
 Illa worked all her life; her early years at the Cafés in Palco, and
 later as manager for the Norris Grain Elevator for 12 to 15 years. Her 
last 15 years, she worked for Northwestern Pump and Supply. During her 
children’s younger years she was a part of the Producer’s Club. When 
Illa wasn’t working or raising her family, she loved to square dance 
with Jerome, play cards and marbles, cook delicious meals, and bake 
tasty treats. Illa was a member of the St. Ann’s Catholic Church in 
Zurich, Kansas and a part of their altar society prior to moving to the 
Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Plainville.
 She is survived by her children, Gloria (Steve) Linville of Ponca 
City, OK, Ronald (Ann) Balthazor of Lexington, NE, and Marty Balthazor 
of Plainville; sister, JoAnn (Raymond) Phillips of WaKeeney; seven 
grandchildren; and fifteen great-grandchildren.
 Illa is preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Hazel 
Cokeley; husband, Jerome Balthazor; son, Donald Balthazor; brothers, 
Clarence “Nut”, Glenn “Moon”, Ron, and Russell Cokeley; sisters, 
Charlene Cokeley and Louise Hrabe; great-grandsons, T.J. Harry and 
William Harry; and daughter-in-law, Jody Balthazor.
 Illa was a woman of great character, strong values, and deep love 
for family and friends. Although she will be greatly missed, her love 
and influence will remain in the hearts and lives of her family and 
friends. May her legacy inspire each of us to encourage one another, 
cherish the ties that bind, take pride in our work ethic, and live to 
serve the Lord in all ways

 A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, June 3, 2020 
at 10:00 A.M. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Plainville.

 Illa is preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Hazel 
Cokeley; husband, Jerome Balthazor; son, Donald Balthazor; brothers, 
Clarence “Nut”, Glenn “Moon”, Ron, and Russell Cokeley; sisters, 
Charlene Cokeley and Louise Hrabe; great-grandsons, T.J. Harry and 
William Harry; and daughter-in-law, Jody Balthazor.
 Illa was a woman of great character, strong values, and deep love 
for family and friends. Although she will be greatly missed, her love 
and influence will remain in the hearts and lives of her family and 
friends. May her legacy inspire each of us to encourage one another, 
cherish the ties that bind, take pride in our work ethic, and live to 
serve the Lord in all ways

Illa Jean Balthazor

Sherrill Ann Arnold, 44, passed away May 31, 2020, at the University 
Of Kansas Health System - Great Bend Campus. She was born on July 16, 
1975 at Great Bend, to Stephen &amp; Debra (Bailey) Arnold.

A lifetime Great Bend resident, Sherrill was a client of Sunflower 
Diversified Services. She was a member of First Assembly of God Church, 
and the Storm Special Olympics track and basketball teams. She enjoyed 
spending time with family, and going on family vacations, especially 
Disney World. To Sherrill, family was everything. She was an avid Kansas
 City Chiefs and Royals fan and she loved swimming.

Survivors include, her parents, Stephen and Debra Arnold of Great 
Bend; a brother, Stephen "Michael" Arnold, Jr. (Cass) of Great Bend; 
three sisters, Laura Harrington (Joseph, Stephanie Galusha, and Amy 
Arnold, all of Great Bend; grandmother, Bonnie Arnold of Great Bend; 
several aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends; and nephews and nieces, 
Alex Arnold, Adyn Haines, Ethan Harrington, Adison Galusha, Abygail 
Arnold Haines, and Madelyn Harrington. She was preceded in death by her 
grandparents, Kenneth “Bud” Arnold, and Merl and Alene Bailey; and a 
nephew and niece, Garin and Rozlyn.

Sherrill Ann Arnold

Dorothy Gayle Bradford, age 81, of Mt. Vernon, Missouri, passed away 
at 9:57 p.m. on Friday, May 29, 2020, at her home.&nbsp; She was born 
November 30, 1938, in Jetmore, Kansas, the daughter of George and 
Mildred (Pittaway) Law.

Dorothy was a nurse’s aide and was a manager for a senior citizens 
complex and attended the First Christian Church of Mt. Vernon.

On February 8, 1953, she married Arlyn Bradford in Jetmore, Kansas.&nbsp; He preceded her in death on November 15, 2011.

Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Mona Gayle Berry of Mt. Vernon; 
four grandchildren, Ryan Bradford and his wife, Angela, Lonnie Bradford 
and his wife, Nikki, Aubrey Off and Jacob Berry; one brother, David Law 
and his wife, Juanita, of Jetmore, Kansas; one sister, Evelyn Bradford 
and&nbsp; her husband, Don, of Pratt, Kansas, four great-grandchildren and 
several nieces and nephews.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, George and Mildred, 
husband, Buzz, two sons, Dale and Lonnie Bradford and one grandson, 
Craig Bradford.

A private family service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, June 5, 2020 at 
the United Methodist Church in Jetmore with Pastor Peter Mtuamwari 
presiding. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. prior to the

Dorothy Gayle Bradford

Larry Dean McCoy, 79, passed away on May 16, 2020 at the Hays Medical
 Center in Hays, Kansas. He was born on April 30, 1941 on the family 
farm in Ness County, Kansas the son of Neal and Mary (McVicker) McCoy.

Larry was a farmer and rancher. He was a United States Army Veteran.

Survivors include a brother, Thomas, and his wife, Joy McCoy of Ness 
City; 2 nieces, Sandy Kramos and Jill Schniepp; and a nephew, Brett 
Ault-McCoy. He was preceded in death by his parents, and 2 sisters, Vera
 Schniepp and Lois Schwartzkopf.

Because of Covid-19, cremation has taken place and a service will be held at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be given to the donor's choice.

Larry Dean McCoy

Ethel Luana (Galloway) Vaughan was born on July 23rd, 1919 at the family farm located two miles north of Jamestown in Cloud County, KS. 

Ethel was a teacher of 1st grade children for 47 years.  She taught for 4 years in Plainville, Phillipsburg, and Horton, KS, 15 years in Concordia, KS and 28 years in San Rafael and Corte Madera, CA.  

While teaching in Plainville, KS in 1940, Ethel and Norman W. Vaughan met.  On June 5th, 1957 Ethel and Norm were married in Jamestown, KS.  In 1958, Ethel joined Norm in Marin County north of San Francisco Bay.  Ethel continued to teach 1st grade in San Rafael and Corte Madera for 28 years.  Ethel and Norm built a home outside of Point Reyes Station, CA, where they had ample land for a large garden with fruit and vegetables. Ethel continued working with children as a substitute teacher for 13 years.  Norm passed away in March 2003 at home in Rossmoor, a retirement community in Walnut Creek, CA.  For several years, Ethel volunteered in a preschool program located in the Grace Presbyterian Church.  Ethel moved to Whispering Pines, Norton, KS in March 2013 to be closer to her sister.

Ethel has traveled internationally.  In 1955 Ethel was chosen by the United Presbyterian Church in America, as one of ten to participate in a 'work camp' in Alexandria, Egypt.  They joined other youth from Sudan, Ethiopia and Egypt in this project.  Before and after the month-long work camp, Ethel toured Europe in France, Switzerland, Germany, The Netherlands, and Venice, Florence, Pisa, and Rome, Italy. She also explored Alexandria, Cairo, and Egyptian pyramids.  Later, Ethel and Norm traveled extensively in the US, Scotland, Scandinavia, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Hong Kong, Taipei, and Taiwan. 

The Winteroth family visited Ethel and Norm many times throughout the years.  A highlight for nieces Kathleen and Suzanne were trips to the tide pools near Bolinas, along with trips to Stinson Beach and Point Reyes National Seashore.  Both nieces visited Ethel's 1st grade classes to observe and help during their mid-year college breaks.  Over time, education discussions were often held after dinner.  This is a family of teachers, starting with Ethel and Doris' mother, Doris and Ethel, Kathleen and Suzanne, Kathleen's former husband, and her great niece Amelia.

Ethel was predeceased by her father Ralf Wilson Galloway, mother Alice Luana Christensen Galloway, an infant brother Eldon Lorraine Galloway, and her husband Norman W. Vaughan.  She is survived by her sister Doris Lucile Galloway Winteroth (Norton, nieces Kathleen Winteroth Hursh (Estes Park, CO, Suzanne Winteroth Goff (Meriden, CT, Carolyn O'Brien Vertucca (Concord, CA, and nephew Charles O'Brien (Concord, CA, grand nephews and nieces Asa Hursh (Los Angeles, CA, Austin Hursh (Rochester, NY, Amelia Goff Young (Meriden, CT) and Allie Goff (Bethany, CT, and great-grand nieces and nephew Corinne Hursh (Los Angeles, CA) Cleo Hursh (Los Angeles, CA) and Bear Young (Meriden, CT) along with many friends throughout her life.

A service is postponed until it is safe for family and friends to gather and celebrate her life. Ethel Luana (Galloway) Vaughan

Gloria Ann Wilson, 76, La Crosse, Kansas, died Wednesday, May 27, 2020, at her home.

Gloria was born April 8, 1944, in Hays, Kansas, the daughter of 
George and Alberta (Huber) Helget.&nbsp; She was a resident of La Crosse, 
Kansas, for 50+ years, moving from Ellis County, Kansas.&nbsp; A 1962 
graduate of Ellis High School, Ellis, Kansas, she worked as a secretary 
at both Producers Gas Equities, Inc., Hays, Kansas, and Flame 
Engineering, La Crosse, Kansas.&nbsp; She also worked alongside her husband, 
B.J. as a farm wife and homemaker.

Gloria was a volunteer at A Second Chance, La Crosse, Kansas, having 
been there over 20 years.&nbsp; She worked the Saturday morning shift for at 
least the last 17 years.&nbsp; She also served as an Executive Board member 
for A Second Chance.&nbsp; She was an avid reader, and volunteered at Barnard
 Library, La Crosse, Kansas. At fair time, she could be found 
volunteering at the Rush County Fair.&nbsp; Gloria was a talented seamstress,
 and loved to sew.

On October 29, 1968, she married Robert J. “B.J.” Wilson at La Crosse, Kansas.&nbsp; He preceded her in death July 15, 2006.

Survivors include:&nbsp; her brother, Robert “Bob” Helget (Bernie, Hays, 
Kansas; her nephews and nieces; great nephews and nieces; and great 
great nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and one brother, Gary Helget.

There will be a private graveside memorial service and inurnment at a later date.

In lieu of flowers or plants, the family requests memorials to the 
Barnard Library, La Crosse, Kansas, or the Rush County Fair, or the

Gloria Ann Wilson

Wilma Jean “Jeannie” Bailey, 90, of Hays, Kansas and formerly of Russell, Kansas, passed away Friday, May 29, 2020 at the Via Christ Village in Hays.

Jeannie was born December 20, 1929 on the family farm in Barton County, Kansas.&nbsp; She was one of seventeen children to Henry and Mollie (Miller) Wilhelm.&nbsp; She grew up on the farm in northern Barton County and attended country schools.

Jeannie was united in marriage to Jerry Dean Bailey on February 25, 1949 in Russell, Kansas.&nbsp; This union was blessed with three children; Cynthia, Douglas and Stanley.&nbsp; Jerry preceded her in death on August 4, 1996.

Jeannie was a waitress for many years in Russell.&nbsp; She worked at the Russell Elks Lodge and the Russell V.F.W.&nbsp; She also cleaned homes in Russell.&nbsp; She was a member of the St. John Lutheran Church.&nbsp; She was a dog and cat lover.&nbsp; She enjoyed fishing, cooking and was known for making noodles and fried chicken, and spending time with her family.

Jeannie’s surviving family include her son, Douglas Bailey of Dallas, Texas; daughter, Cynthia Henning (Tim) of Russell, Kansas; five grandchildren, six great grandchildren and 12 great-great grandchildren.&nbsp; She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, nine brothers and seven sisters.

A Graveside Service will be held at 10:30AM, Thursday, June 4, 2020 at the Russell City Cemetery.&nbsp; Visitation will be held from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM, Wednesday, June 3, 2020 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell.&nbsp; Memorials have been established with St. John Lutheran Church or Russell County Food Pantry.&nbsp; Contributions and condolences may be sent to Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, who is in charge of these arrangements.

Wilma Jean “Jeannie” Bailey, 90, of Hays, Kansas and formerly of Russell, Kansas, passed away Friday, May 29, 2020 at the Via Christ Village in Hays.Jeannie was born December 20, 1929 on the family farm in Barton County, Kansas.&nbsp; She was one of seventeen children to Henry and Mollie (Miller) Wilhelm.&nbsp; She grew up on the farm in northern Barton County and attended country schools.Jeannie was united in marriage to Jerry Dean Bailey on February 25, 1949 in Russell, Kansas.&nbsp; This union was blessed with three children; Cynthia, Douglas and Stanley.&nbsp; Jerry preceded her in death on August 4, 1996.Jeannie was a waitress for many years in Russell.&nbsp; She worked at the Russell Elks Lodge and the Russell V.F.W.&nbsp; She also cleaned homes in Russell.&nbsp; She was a member of the St. John Lutheran Church.&nbsp; She was a dog and cat lover.&nbsp; She enjoyed fishing, cooking and was known for making noodles and fried chicken, and spending time with her family.Jeannie’s surviving family include her son, Douglas Bailey of Dallas, Texas; daughter, Cynthia Henning (Tim) of Russell, Kansas; five grandchildren, six great grandchildren and 12 great-great grandchildren.&nbsp; She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, nine brothers and seven sisters.A Graveside Service will be held at 10:30AM, Thursday, June 4, 2020 at the Russell City Cemetery.&nbsp; Visitation will be held from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM, Wednesday, June 3, 2020 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell.&nbsp; Memorials have been established with St. John Lutheran Church or Russell County Food Pantry.&nbsp; Contributions and condolences may be sent to Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, who is in charge of these arrangements.

Helena Ann Ubelaker, 92, of Osborne, KS passed away on Thursday, May 
28, 2020, at Parkview Care Center. &nbsp;She was born on December 27, 1927, to 
Nicholas &amp; Helena (Arnoldy) Boden of Tipton, KS. &nbsp;She was one of 
several children.

Helena's schooling took her as far as 8th grade. &nbsp;She later married James F. Ubelaker &amp; to this union 4 children were born.

Helena was a school cook at the Bloomington school. &nbsp;She was also a 
meat clerk at Howe's Market, Town &amp; Country Market &amp; Girard's, 
all of Osborne, KS.

Helena was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Jim in 2012 and one grandson, Jim C. Smith in 1982.

Helena is survived by daughters: Sandy (Greg) Smith of Hays, KS; Judy
 (Joe) Gasper of Tipton, KS; sons: Doug (Linda) Ubelaker of Osborne, KS;
 Ken (Sherri) Ubelaker of Osborne, KS; 12 grandchildren &amp; 11 
great-grandchildren.

Viola C. Rowe, 102, of Russell, Kansas, passed away Monday, June 1, 2020 at Main Street Manor in Russell.

The daughter of Jesse L. “Tobe” and Eula (McDonald) Robinson. Viola was born on October 23,

1917, in Drumright, Oklahoma. On August 24, 1940, she married Ivan E. Rowe in McAlester, Oklahoma.

Preceding
 her in death were her parents, husband Ivan on December 01, 2000; two 
sisters Frankie Davis Ruble and Joyce Lee Yandell. Surviving family include several nieces and nephews.

At
 her request there will be no viewing of the body or no funeral service.
 Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice. 
Burial will be at the Holdenville City Cemetery in Holdenville, 
Oklahoma. Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, Kansas, is in 
charge of the funeral service arrangements.
