Vernon Delmer Roberts passed away at Whispering Pines in Norton, Kansas, August 10, 2020.  Vernon was born to Ralph and Lela Ann Roberts on October 9, 1921, in Norton County, and grew up on a farm in Belle Plaine Township.

Vernon attended schools in Norton County and worked briefly for the Conservation Corp before enlisting in the United States Army during World War II.  He survived the landing at Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge with Gen. Patton's 3rd Army, and remained in Europe with the Army of Occupation through 1945.

Following his discharge from the military, Vernon returned to Norton County where he began working for the Kansas Department of Transportation as an engineering technician.  He also became a skilled licensed land surveyor, a job he continued to enjoy after retirement from his occupation with the State of Kansas. 

Vernon married Donna Maxine Madden on August 17, 1963.  They had a marriage of nearly 56 years.  Donna passed away on March 7, 2019.  Vernon loved country music, travels to the Ozarks and Branson, Missouri, reading and a lively conversation.  He belonged to the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Norton Christian Church. 

Survivors include his nephews and nieces: Roberta Goldsberry, Steve Fisher, Melissa Delimont, Gary Sebelius, Doug Sebelius, Dan Archibald, Jeff Roberts, Stan Roberts and Joni Danielson, and a sister-in-law, Beverly Roberts. 

Vernon was preceded in death by his siblings: Nelda Fisher, Bette Sebelius, Loene Archibald and Don Roberts; and a nephew, Mike Archibald.

Vernon Delmer Roberts

Mary Ellen “Jill” Herres, 94, passed away Wednesday, August 13, 2020,
 in Hoisington. She was born in White Hall, Illinois, to Dr. Hans 
William and Marian (Winn) Broberg. Jill was a resident of Hoisington, 
Kansas.

Jill was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority at Kansas State 
University where she met her future husband, James Edward “Eddie” 
Herres. She graduated from K-State in 1947 and moved to San Francisco, 
California, to work. She and Eddie were married on October 18, 1947, in 
Carmel-By-The-Sea, California. They moved back to Hoisington where Eddie
 was born and raised and she became an active member of the community.

An avid reader, Jill was a long time Board member of the 
Hoisington Library. She loved animals, especially dogs, and had some 
very special pets. She enjoyed playing golf and attending local 
concerts, theater and events; she traveled to Europe and Asia. She 
remained involved with Delta Delta Delta and really enjoyed her PEO 
sisters and their good times.

She was passionate about her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She and Eddie raised two children, Blake E. Herres, DDS, of 
Hoisington, and Kim A. Herres, of Atlanta, GA. They survive and will 
miss her so very much. She was a wonderful and loving mother and wife 
and so much fun! Young and old enjoyed her company and she had friends 
of all ages and all walks of life. All who knew her will miss this very 
special person who loved life and lived it to its fullest.

Jill is survived by; her children, Blake and Kim; and her sister, 
Elizabeth Bowers (Shannon) of Sun City West, AZ; grandchildren, Addie 
Baird (Zach), Sarah Linsner (Kevin) and Hannah Herres; eight great 
grandchildren; and two nieces and two nephews. She was preceded in death
 by her parents and her brother, Dr. William Broberg, of Hoisington

Cremation has been chosen. Services will be private, immediate 
family only. Friends may sign the book 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday at the 
funeral home.

Memorials may be given to the Clara Barton Hospital Foundation,

Mary Ellen 'Jill' Herres

Catherine (Gilsdorf) Orth Wahlmeier, 
age 89, of Hays, passed away on Thursday, August 13th, 2020, at Good 
Samaritan Society. She was born on December 21, 1930 in Hilbert, WI to 
Joseph and Martha (Leonhard) Gilsdorf.

She married Harold Orth on November 12,
 1952. He preceded her in death in 1974. She married Robert Wahlmeier on
 August 2, 1975. He preceded her in death in 2011.

Catherine received her nursing diploma 
in 1951 in Fond du Lac, WI and began her nursing career in Hays, Kansas 
with the Agnesian Nuns at St. Anthony’s Hospital. After she married 
Harold Orth, she became a full-time mother and homemaker, but she always
 kept her RN license current.

Catherine was a fierce defender of the 
unborn. She became active in the Right to Life movement serving on the 
board of Right to Life of Kansas and speaking out against Planned 
Parenthood. Catherine participated in more than 25 annual Marches for 
Life in Washington D. C. She daily prayed the rosary in front of the 
local Planned Parenthood in Hays, KS whose doors finally closed in 2014.
 She was awarded the Guardian of Life Award from the Diocese of Salina 
in September 2008. Catherine also wrote a pro-life article entitled 
“Time for Life” in the Ellis County Star from 1974-1989. She served on 
Ladies’ Auxiliary that helped raise funds for Mary Elizabeth Maternity 
Home.

Catherine was a parishioner of St. 
Joseph’s Catholic Church and a daily communicant, made countless holy 
hours and sang in the choir. She was a member of Christian Mother’s, the
 Third Order Franciscans, and Perpetual Adorers. Catherine also 
volunteered her time praying the rosary and singing in nursing 
facilities throughout Hays. She recently started a prayer group in her 
home that continued while living at Good Samaritan Society.

Catherine enjoyed dancing, baking and 
sewing. She was a skilled quilt maker and made hundreds of quilts for 
weddings and births of family and friends. She also donated quilts to 
the Samaritan House for the homeless population in Denver.&nbsp; 
Catherine was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, 
friend and advocate of the unborn. She will be greatly missed by all.&nbsp;

Catherine is survived by three sons: 
Joseph Orth of Bellevue, KY; John (Ginger) Orth of Loyal, WI; and 
Michael Orth of Jefferson, GA; Seven Daughters: Joan Holt of Wright 
City, MO; Maggie (John) Cosner of Gillette, WY; Mary Burks of Stone 
Mountain, GA; Martha (Vince) Ervin of Clemson, SC; Maureen (Bob) 
McDaniel of Rogersville, TN; Judy (Jason) Berry of Denver, CO; and 
Jacinta (Dan) Gosbeth of Sahuarita, AZ. Four step-sons: Mark (Julie) 
Wahlmeier of Tulsa, OK; Thaddeus Wahlmeier of Tulsa, OK; Camillus 
(Dorrene) Wahlmeier of Wamego, KS; and Nathaniel (Elizabeth) Wahlmeier 
of Noble, OK; Six step-daughters: Rose (Bob) Ponder of Sherman, TX; Joan
 Wahlmeier of Kent, WA; Germaine Wahlmeier of The Colony, TX; Roberta 
(Ed) Valdez of Ogden, UT; Cordelia (James) Stephan of Allen, TX;

Funeral services will be 10 AM 
Tuesday, August 18, 2020 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Hays. Burial
 will follow in the St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will be Monday 4 PM –
 8 PM and Tuesday 9 AM – 9:30 AM at Brock’s-Keithley Funeral Chapel and

Monday at 5 PM will be the Franciscans Prayer Service and the Parish Vigil Service will be at 7 PMM all at the funeral chapel.

Catherine (Gilsdorf) Orth Wahlmeier

Barbara F. Fox, 86, passed away Friday, August 14, 2020 at Wilson Care 
and Rehabilitation in Wilson, KS. She was born on September 12, 1933 in 
Larned, KS to CG and Leora (Nulf) Hammond. She was a 1950 graduate of 
Larned High School. Barbara was united in marriage to Melvin V. Fox on 
January 5, 1952 in Larned. They were blessed with seven sons and two 
daughters.
 Barbara worked as a Medical Records Designee at Wilson Nursing 
Center for several years and was also a farmer’s wife. She was very 
active and involved with the Catholic Church being a member of the 
Daughters of Isabella at St. Wenceslaus Church and the St. Joseph Altar 
Society in Dorrance. She loved spending time with her grandkids and also
 enjoyed crocheting, puzzles, reading, and always enjoyed volunteering 
for the next activity that came around.
 Left to cherish her memory is her husband, Melvin of Ellsworth; 
sons, Rocky (Linda) Fox of Pratt, Gary (Darla) Fox of Offerle, Roger 
(Debbie) Fox of Hoxie, and Calvin (Bonnie) Fox of Hoisington; daughter, 
Beverly (Mike) Wesley of Lake City; sister-in-law, Barbara Hammond of

bright as sunshine, and always there to help when needed. Her beautiful 
spirit will endure forever. Although she has now gone home to be with 
her Lord, the legacy of her love, laughter, and joy will live in our 
hearts and memories forever. She will be greatly missed by all who knew
 her, but the celebration of her life and memories will never be 
forgotten.
 A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00AM on Tuesday, 
August 18, 2020 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Dorrance. Burial will 
follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be held on

Richard Eugene Boxberger, 85, of Russell, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, August 12, 2020 at the Main Street Manor in Russell Regional Hospital.

Richard was born November 22, 1934, in Russell, the son of Herman and Pauline (Funk) Boxberger.  He grew up and attended school in Russell.  After graduation, he attended Kansas Wesleyan in Salina, Kansas before entering the military, serving in the U.S. Navy.  He married the love of his life, Carmen Wiley, in 1957.  They made their home in Glenview, Illinois, while serving in the military.  Upon their return to Russell, he worked for Bud Motzkus, then for Fritz and Joan Waymaster at the Playdium Bowl until they sold the business. 

Richard was a farmer at heart, it was not a job, but a passion.  He had been working in or with farming his whole life, including custom farming for the Witt family with his sons.  In addition to farming his other loves were bowling, golf and snooker.  He retired in 2006 and became part of the afternoon “gang” at the Russell Senior Center, until his health began to fail in 2013.  Richard will be remembered for his quick wit and his fierce love and loyalty for his family and friends.

Surviving family include his wife of 62 years, Carmen of the home; three sons, Michael Boxberger (Jennifer) of Raymore, Missouri, Martin Boxberger (Katharine) of Olathe, Kansas and Mont Boxberger (Linda) of Olathe, Kansas; brother, Gerald Boxberger (Shirley) of Russell, Kansas; sister, Veramae Henry of Great Bend, Kansas; six grandchildren, Bailey and Peyton Boxberger of Olathe, Kansas, Brody and Brock Boxberger of Olathe, Kansas, Gabriel and Carmen Boxberger of Raymore, Missouri.  He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Wilmer Boxberger, brother-in-law Bob Henry, sister-in-law Estella Boxberger and granddaughter, precious baby Faith. 

Celebration of Richard’s Life will be held at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, August 18, 2020 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary.  A private family burial of Ashes will follow at a later date.  Visitation will be held from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM, Monday, August 17, 2020 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary.  Memorials have been established with Calvary Chapel – Assembly of God Church or Russell Senior Center.

Richard Eugene Boxberger

Pastor Steve Dinkel, age 62, of Hays, Kansas, died Wednesday, August 12, 2020, at his home.&nbsp; He was born June 7, 1958, in Plainville, Kansas, to Leo and Odellia “Tillie” (Schamberger) Dinkel.&nbsp; He married Kathy (Mall) on February 27, 1982, in Hays, Kansas.

He became the pastor at Liberty Foursquare Church (then Liberty Christian Fellowship) in 1994 and spent the last 20 years in full-time ministry.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;

He was raised in Quinter, Kansas and was a 1976 graduate from Quinter High School.&nbsp; He attended one year at Maur Hill-Mount Academy in Atchison, Kansas. Steve, being a life-long student, attended Oral Roberts University in 1977, earned an associate’s degree in 2006 from Fort Hays State University, and graduated in 2010 from Victory Bible Institute.

He spent his early career in sales—selling cars at Unruh Chevrolet in Quinter, Kansas; Tink’s Auto Mart in Tulsa, Oklahoma; and Harries’ Motor Company in WaKeeney, Kansas.&nbsp; He was a salesman for Western Office Supply and Northwestern Office Suppliers both in Hays, Kansas from 1985 to 2000.&nbsp;

Steve enjoyed RV’ing with his family in the Colorado Rockies, and also enjoyed helping people purchase cars.

Survivors include his wife Kathy, of the home; two sons, Chris Dinkel and wife, Ervis, New York, NY; Matt Dinkel and wife, Rebekah, Olathe, KS; two daughters, Molly Lofstrom and husband, Chris, Hays, KS; Amanda Dinkel and her husband, Indiana Elman, Wichita, KS; one brother, Dennis Dinkel, Liberal, KS; four grandchildren, Liam Dinkel, Marcelyn and Erin Lofstrom, Shiloh Dinkel; and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded by his parents; his father-law, Gene Mall and his mother-in-law, Charlotte Mall-Brantley.&nbsp;

A family only funeral service will be at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, August 15, 2020, at Liberty Foursquare Church, 400 East 7th Street, Hays, Kansas.&nbsp; A live stream broadcast for the public will be available at Liberty Foursquare Church Hays FACEBOOK PAGE.&nbsp; Burial will be at Mount Allen Cemetery, Hays, Kansas.

Pastor Steve Dinkel 

Ninety-six years of family, friends, food, and fun anchored in Love 
only begins to describe Irma Deeds. Irma was born in Blue Earth, MN on 
July 11th, 1924 and died August 10th, 2020 at the Goodland Regional 
Medical Center.&nbsp;

She was known for her great hospitality extended to family and 
friends throughout her life and quietly brought out the best in people 
mainly in her children and grandchildren.&nbsp; She loved to give her time 
freely to teach, encourage, laugh and to humbly persevere.&nbsp;

After graduation from Bird City High School and WWII was over, Irma 
married Wayne Deeds in 1945 and they happily lived on their Beaver Creek
 ranch.&nbsp; Wayne and Irma had four children: Reva (Jon) Eicher, Linda 
(Ray) Crumbaker, Bill (Janice) Deeds and Jeanie (Fred) Schields.&nbsp;

Irma would help Wayne tend to the cattle early in the morning, fry 
chickens along with prepared fresh garden vegetables, run to town to 
install hand-made drapes-----all within a half days’ time.&nbsp; Irma 
understood the value of hard work and the gain it would bring her 
family, and what it would teach them.&nbsp; Irma’s beautiful hand-sewn 
drapes, interior decorating and wedding hostess skills became an admired
 passion for Irma.&nbsp; Against all odds at the age of 50, she founded a 
highly successful drapery business.&nbsp; In 2002 Wayne and Irma sold the 
ranch and moved to Colby where they lived until Wayne’s death in 2008.&nbsp; 
Irma moved to Goodland shortly after to be closer to family.

Irma is preceded in death by her husband Wayne and all four of her 
siblings. Irma is virtually the last surviving member of a 24-person 
Pinochle Club from Bird City.

She is survived by all of her children and their spouses, 13 
grandchildren Michele Preston, Rick (Stacey) Eicher, Pete (Kendra) 
Eicher, Porter Crumbaker, Preston (Ally) Crumbaker, Paxton (Ciara) 
Crumbaker, Parker Crumbaker, Zac (Nikki) Deeds, Sara (Matt) Bromley, 
Tiffany (Scott) Mathias, Tahnee (Justin) Mueske, Tatum (Andy) Kepler and
 Tennille (Nick) Roppo, 20 great grandchildren, 3 great great 
grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.&nbsp;

During her later years, Irma’s competitive spirit was evident in her 
card playing with the grandchildren and her passion for sports mainly 
Kansas college basketball teams.

After 63 years of marriage, Wayne wrote in his last poem:

“But most important in My Life…….is IRMA, my joy and my wife!"

Irma D. (Carstens) Deeds

We celebrate the life of Alberta Kraus, from Albert, Kansas, who died
 at the age of 105, on August 5, 2020, at The Villages of Jackson Creek,
 Independence, Missouri.

Alberta’s families honor her gracious nature, her devotion to family,
 and her church. She loved music, reading, and playing cards, and had a 
passion for decorating, cooking, and kindness and service to others. We 
are so proud to have had such a fine parent.

She is survived by her four children, Thayne Kraus (wife Leona), 
Lorna Shaw (husband Don), Marilyn Ginther (husband Glenn), and Karen 
Organ (husband Wayne); grandchildren; great grandchildren; great great 
grandchildren; and one brother, Frank Offutt. She was preceded in death 
by her parents, Agnes and I.S. Offutt; six of her seven siblings; her 
husband of 48 years, Harvey M. Kraus; and her second husband of 18 
years, Elmer Mausolf.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Graveside 
services will be announced at a later date and inurnment will be in the 
Great Bend Cemetery.

Andrew William Bock, 36, died Friday, August 7, 2020. 

Graveside Memorial Service at  2:00 pm, Thursday, August 13, 2020, at Oak Creek Cemetery in Smith County, Kansas. 

 Andy was a skilled heavy equipment operator who recently moved to Wichita and had begun work with Dondlinger Construction.  He was a son, a brother, uncle, and a friend, and he will be missed and remembered by many. 

 Survived by parents Robert and Terri Bock of Ellsworth, KS; brother, Jason Bock (Karen) of Wichita, KS; sister Erica McCabe (Tim) of Guilford, IN; three nieces (Whitley, Violet, and Ava) and a nephew (Nicholas).&nbsp;&nbsp;

Melva Jean Hawkins, 82, passed away Friday, August 7, 2020 at Parkview Care Center, Osborne, KS. 
 Jean was born May 23, 1938 on the family farm to Wardie M. and Lavina 
C. (Carver) Hawkins.&nbsp; She was a member of the First Christian Church and
 past president of the Chamber of Commerce both of Smith Center. 
 Jean spent many years as a business women on the main street of Smith 
Center where she owned her own clothing store and also did accounting 
for several other businesses.&nbsp; Jean enjoyed cooking, watching RFD TV, 
driving around town to see if anything new was happening, talking on the
 phone, visiting with her family and listening to the local scanner for 
news to pass along.&nbsp; She loved her three grandchildren and was a 
honorary grandmother to all of their friends and was affectingly known 
as the "Grandma Taxi".&nbsp; She enjoyed watching the school channel when any
 of the grandkids played sports or a school activity.&nbsp; She was 
passionate about organizing family dinners and planning her high school 
class reunion, class of 1956. She was preceded in death by 
her parents, brother Duane Hawkins, two nephews, Larry Baetz and Jerry 
Hawkins, brother-in-law Leland Baetz and nephew-in-law Milo Shellito. 
 Jean is survived by her son Darin (Jessica) Hawkins of Smith Center; 
sister Helen Baetz of Smith Center; sister-in-law Maydeen Hawkins of 
Smith Center, three grandchildren, Ashton, Avery and Adrian Hawkins all 
of Smith Center and many nieces and nephews. A 
celebration of Jean's life will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, August 
11, 2020 at All Faiths Funeral Chapel, 113 S. Madison St., Smith Center,
 KS, with Pastor Randy Hill officiating.&nbsp; Visitation will be held from

Melva Jean Hawkins

Chester Wheeler Ross, Chaplain, Lt. Col., USAF, DMin, Retired.&nbsp; Died 
at the age of 97 in the morning of August 12, 2020, in Goodland, 
Kansas.&nbsp; Chester was born November 3, 1922, to Mylo W. Ross and Irma K. 
(Berning) Ross in Evansville, Indiana.&nbsp;

“Chet” graduated from Mechanical Arts/Bosse High School in 
Evansville, Indiana.&nbsp; Bachelor of Arts from Kansas Wesleyan University 
in Salina, Kansas.&nbsp; Master of Divinity from Garrett-Evangelical Seminary
 and Doctor of Ministry from St. Paul School of Theology, plus other 
domestic and international schooling.&nbsp;

He enlisted in the United States Airforce in 1942, for WWII and 
served during two other wars completing 27 years of active Air Force 
service.&nbsp; Chet received numerous military awards and medals including 
the Air Medal with cluster.&nbsp;

Chet married Ruth Briney on August 30, 1949 by her grandfather, Rev. 
James S. Coppoc.&nbsp; The wedding was in the garden at the Briney farm east 
of Goodland.&nbsp;

Ruth and Chet raised 5 children: James, Deborah, Judith, Martha, and 
John in their travels overseas and various assignments in the USA.&nbsp;

After retiring from the United States Airforce in 1975, as a 
Chaplain, he served in Methodist parishes at Iuka, Byers, Cullison and 
Ness City.&nbsp; In the late 1940’s and early 1950’s he served parishes in 
Mentor and Bogue.&nbsp;

He served 65 years in ministry.&nbsp; Served on a Federal Grand Jury for 
many weeks.&nbsp; He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Rotary, 
Military Chaplains, Kentucky Colonels, Airforce Association, Rural 
Chaplains, Academy of Parish Clergy, VFW, American Legion, Boy Scouts 
(50 years and Silver Beaver), and Christian Councilors.&nbsp; Plus, many 
other volunteer services including Fair Rides, Museum Board, Goodland 
Regional Medical Center Board, Hospital Auxiliary, Chaplain Services, 
AARP Free Tax Aid, Drivers Safety, Guardian Services for Developmentally
 Disabled, etc.&nbsp;

Chet married into farming and helped on the Walker Briney farm during
 military leaves since the late 1940’s and after his retirement.&nbsp; He 
leaves acreage in Cheyenne, Sherman, and Kit Carson counties.&nbsp;

Chet believed in service to others and witnessing for Jesus Christ.&nbsp;

Preceding him in death are his wife, Ruth of 65 years; his parents, 
Mylo and Irma; brother, Victor Ross; sister, June Kifer; grandson, Peter
 Cutler; and son-in-law, Robert Cutler.&nbsp;

Survivors are son, James of Goodland; daughters, Deborah (Mike) 
Edwards of Estes Park, CO, Judith Cutler of Meridian, ID, Martha (Brian)
 Kruger of Baldwin, MO; son, John (Stacey) Ross of Olathe, KS; brother, 
Glen Ross of Evansville, IN; sister, Lois (John) Helfrick of Evansville,
 IN; eleven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; many other family,

Chester Wheeler Ross

Gary Edd DeFries was born April 3, 1937 to William Edward “Edd” 
DeFries &amp; Lyda Mae Farley DeFries in St. Francis, Kansas, joining 
older sisters Loretta &amp; Jean.&nbsp; His first years were spent on the 
family’s farm outside Goodland before moving into town when he started 
school.&nbsp; He got his 1st dog, Mike, at that time, and his father had him 
try his hand at driving a tractor when he was only 4 years old.&nbsp; He went
 through all his years of schooling in Goodland, raising chickens in FFA
 in high school &amp; spending the summers farming wheat with his 
father.&nbsp; He got pretty good at shooting jack rabbits &amp; rattle snakes
 out in the wheat fields!&nbsp; After his beloved Mike died, he found another
 friend in his dog Taffy, who Gary built a fine dog house for as an FFA 
project.&nbsp;

After graduating from Goodland High School in 1955, where Gary was 
active in Youth for Christ, Gary went to Minnesota Bible College where 
he played clarinet for the University of Minnesota band.&nbsp; He then went 
to Denver University where he earned his bachelor’s followed by studies 
in Europe.&nbsp; While a student at Uppsala University in Sweden, he met his 
wife Reidun while on a ski trip.&nbsp; They married in the summer of 1962, 
followed by a hitchhiking honeymoon across Europe.&nbsp; Before their oldest 
son, William Arvid, was born in June of 1963, they moved back to 
Goodland.&nbsp; Heeding his mother’s encouragement to become a preacher, Gary
 moved his family to New Brighton, Minnesota where he attended United 
Theological Seminary.&nbsp; During this time 2 more children joined the 
family:&nbsp; Birger Cox (Erik) in December of 1964, and Anita Kirsten in 
March of 1966.

After graduating from seminary, Gary was called to preach at Bethany 
Christian Church in Westminster, Colorado.&nbsp; He studied gerontology 
during this time, which led to a job at a nursing home in Jacksonville, 
Illinois, where Erik started school.&nbsp; The family then moved to Milwaukee
 where Gary managed housing for the Southern Baptist Convention.&nbsp; Sadly,
 during this time the couple’s marriage ended in divorce, and Gary 
gained custody of his 3 children, a rare occurrence for a father in 
1972.&nbsp; He &amp; the children then moved to Madison &amp; on to Port 
Washington, Wisconsin for a few years, and then on to Idaho Springs, 
Colorado in 1975, where Gary was in business for himself and continued 
to lease his wheat farm in Goodland.

In 1977 Gary accepted the call to preach at the Christian Church in 
Ault, Colorado, where he and his boys farmed wheat between Pierce &amp; 
Nunn, and his boys followed in his footsteps by joining the Highland FFA
 Chapter.&nbsp; In 1980 his oldest son joined the Marines, and soon after he 
drove his younger children to Seymour, Tennessee to attend a Christian 
boarding school.&nbsp; He preached in several small churches in Tennessee, 
Kentucky &amp; Virginia throughout the eighties.&nbsp;

Ever interested in exploring new places, Gary took his family on many
 a trip to various interesting nooks &amp; crannies across the U.S.A., 
and he even spent a few years as a long-haul truck driver.&nbsp; He was 
instrumental in helping his children as they completed their high school
 diplomas and embarked on careers and further education, and he &amp; 
his daughter drove the Alcan when she moved there to teach in Alaska.&nbsp; 
Gary was always there to advise &amp; encourage all of his children, 
spurring them on to grow in their faith and their walk with the Lord.&nbsp; 
He was the best counselor &amp; friend, always inspiring his children to
 achieve more than they ever thought they could.&nbsp; He was a man of so 
many talents, ever learning and never bored.&nbsp; He had a brilliant mind, 
and was a natural teacher; Gary was multi-lingual, and was still 
learning languages in his eighties.&nbsp; Much to the joy of his children, he
 and their mother became good friends in the last few years of Gary’s 
life, bringing healing &amp; restoration to all of their hearts.&nbsp; Gary 
continued in ministry to the end of his days on this earth, lifting all 
those he loved in prayer to the Lord.&nbsp; He has taken his last journey to 
be with his Lord &amp; Savior, and though he will be greatly missed, his
 family rejoices with him on his Homecoming.

Gary is survived by his children &amp; their spouses, Bill &amp; Joy,
 Erik, and Kirsten &amp; Jim; his 1st wife, Reidun, &amp; widow, 
Elizabeth; nine grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

Thank you for rearing us up, and for all you taught &amp; instilled in us, Daddy.&nbsp; We shall see you in the Morning.

Gary DeFries

Robert C. “Bob” McCobb, 73, of Russell, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, August 11, 2020 at his residence with his family by his side.

Bob was born April 13, 1947 in Russell, Kansas.  He was one of three children born to Boyden and Doris M. (Marsh) McCobb.  He grew up in Russell and graduated from Russell High School in the Class of ’65.  Bob then served his country in the U.S. Army during Vietnam.  After his tour of duty, Bob was stationed at Ft. Dix, New Jersey, where he was united in marriage to Gertrude C. “Trudy” Scarborough on June 22, 1968.  This union was blessed with two children; Scott and Caryn. After his discharge from the Army they lived in Fairless Hills, Pennsylvania, while Bob attended Bucks County Community College.

Bob and his family returned to Russell in 1974 to join his father Boyden in his Carrier Dealership.  After Boyden’s death, Bob and his brother purchased the business in 1977 and were the owners and operators until 1980.  After several positions Bob worked at the USPO in Hays, Kansas, when he was a member and Past President of the Postal Workers Union, retiring in 2004.  Bob then answered a call to the ministry serving as a Lay Pastor at the Natoma and Pleasant Plains United Methodist Churches, retiring in 2010

Bob was a lifetime member of the Trinity United Methodist Church.  He was active serving on most committees throughout the years.  He and Trudy sponsored Sr. High UMF, taught young and older adult Sunday School and Stephen Ministry classes.  He was a member of the Russell VFW Post #6240, Russell Elks Lodge and served on the USD 407 School Board.  In his spare time he enjoyed hunting when he was younger, watching K-State University Athletics and the Dallas Cowboys, running marathons and especially spending time with his grandchildren.

Bob’s surviving family include his wife of 52 years, Trudy of the home; son, Scott McCobb (Donya) of Russell, Kansas; daughter, Caryn Carson (Thom) of Gretna, Nebraska; brother, Allan McCobb of Russell, Kansas; 18 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Carolyn Mitchell.

Celebration of Bob’s Life will be held at 10:30 AM, Monday, August 17, 2020 at the Trinity United Methodist Church of Russell.  Burial of Ashes will follow at the Russell City Cemetery where the Russell V.F.W. Post #6240 Honor Guard will conduct Military Rites.  The family will be present to greet friends from 9:30 AM to service time at the church on Monday.  Memorials have been established with DAV Advocacy for Vietnam Vets or Ronald McDonald House in Wichita, Kansas. Bernie was a U.S. Army veteran.  He worked as a tradesman in the construction industry.  He will be missed by many.  

Preceding him in death are his parents; two brothers, Julian and George;  and one sister, Marie Holaday Espara. He is survived by sisters, Twila Stover of Salina, Ks Lucille Houston of Austin, Tx, Rita (Pat) Vavricka of Ness City, Kansas; and brother, Ronald (Teresa) Albers of Colwich, Kansas.

Visitation and rosary will be held at Schmitt Funeral Home, Quinter, Kansas on Friday, August 14, at 7:00PM.  Family will be present 30 minutes prior, as well as after the rosary to greet friends.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at St Joseph Catholic Church, Oakley, Kansas, at 10:30 Saturday,August 15 2020.

Don Raymond Endsley

Gloria Lynn (Bushnell) Babcock was born on the Bushnell family farm west of Speed, Kansas, on Dec. 16, 1934 to John Wellington Bushnell and Sarah Ellen (Eller) Bushnell.&nbsp; She passed away at the Phillips County Hospital in Phillipsburg, on Monday, Aug. 10, 2020 at the age of 85 years.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Gloria spent her early childhood and school years in Speed, Kirwin, Victoria, and Agra.

Gloria was a homemaker, but also had jobs throughout the years as a waitress at Martha’s Café, store clerk with Rankin Drug, and secretary at High Plains Mental Health just prior to her retirement.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Gloria Lynn (Bushnell) Babcock

Duane Louis Dorshorst, 62, passed away Aug. 11 at Decatur County Health Systems. He was born on Dec. 6, 1957 in Beverly Hills, Calif., son of Ronald and Patricia (Moore) Dorshorst but the family soon moved, and Duane spent most of his younger days in Hay Springs, Neb. He graduated from Hay Springs High school and went on to play college football and compete in track at Chadron State College while pursuing a degree in geology. On Aug. 7, 1982, he wed Patricia (Miller) and to that union they added four daughters. Although Duane began his career in geology, he quickly found his calling in education. He was a teacher and administrator in the USD 294 school system for 35 years, serving 22 years as elementary principal. In that time, he touched the lives of many students, teachers, and community members.

He loved to interact with his students not only in the classroom but also on the sports field. Duane served as a football coach, girls basketball coach and track coach at different times throughout his career. Several of his teams found great success in state competitions.

As an educator, it was important to Duane that every student feel valued and important. No matter how much work he had to do, he always made time to help someone else or help in the lunchroom where he strove to interact with each student by name.

Duane was an advocate for education. He was a member of United School Administrators and KAESP for over 20 years, serving as the Kansas Association of Elementary School Principal President in 2008. He also served as the Zone 8 Director for the National Association of Elementary School Principals.

In 2017, he was awarded the Kansas Outstanding Service Award from USA for his dedication to education in Kansas. Although Duane tried retirement for a year, his passion for improving education for the students of Kansas soon took him back to work.

His most current position in education found him as the executive director for the Kansas Association of Principals and working with USA Kansas. He was a lifelong advocate for education both at the state and national levels and served as a mentor and inspiration to many students, teachers and administrators during his career. Outside of the education world, Duane also liked to spend his time working within his church parish and the community. He spent time on the library board and hospital board.

He was active in helping with the 4-H fair and was a pig superintendent for several years. In Duane’s more recent endeavors, he volunteered at the movie theater. In his parish, Duane has served as a Sunday school teacher, CYO sponsor, and church council member. He was a fourth degree Knights of Columbus member.

In his spare time, you would find Duane on the golf course, gardening, or helping someone with anything they needed. He enjoyed spending time with family and was the greatest example of family first. Many miles were put on his vehicles to travel to the events of his children and grandchildren throughout his life and he would never miss one if he could help it. Duane is survived by his wife, Patricia J of Oberlin; four daughters, Danielle (Joe) Suchsland Agra, Kelsey (Andrew) Feyes of Tallmadge, Ohio, Tricia (Mitchell) Haden of Cheyenne, Wyo., Mikaela (Gunnar) Hays of Lawrence; mother, Patricia L. (Moore) Dorshorst of Hay Springs, Neb.; two sisters, Sheyrl (Tom) Simons and Rochelle (Will) White; seven grandchildren Aden Shaw, Bryson Shaw, Clara Jo Feyes, Miley Suchsland, Alexandra Feyes, Harper Suchsland, Lyla Haden. Duane was preceded in death by his father, Ronald Dorshorst. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 14, 2020 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Leoville. Burial will follow at the Oberlin Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 13, 2020 at Pauls Funeral Home, Oberlin. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. A Rosary will be said following the visitation at 8 p.m.

Gerald Eugene "Jerry," "Birdman" Bird of Plainville, Kansas, died August 
10, 2020 at his sister’s home in Hoxie, Kansas. Jerry was born in Hays,
 Kansas, May 16, 1953 to John E. and Norma Jean (Hornbeck) Bird. He was
 raised in Plainville and graduated from Plainville High School in 1971.
 From there, he went to Hutchinson Community College. After college, 
he moved from Hutchinson to Wichita and worked for Hugo’s 
Harley-Davidson. Eventually he returned to Plainville and worked for 
many years as a roughneck and pumper in the oil fields.
 Jerry’s true love and earliest career was motorcycle racing, where 
he earned his nickname, Birdman. The young man could absolutely fly 
around the track. He started racing as a teenager riding scrambles 
tracks and half-mile ovals, and with his dad John as crew chief and 
mechanic, he won races all over the Great Plains. He filled the house 
with trophies from his wins, and it’s rumored that he won every race he 
entered in 1972. He mostly retired from racing after the 1974 season, 
though he did don the leathers a few times here and there to appear in 
some old-timer events.
 In addition to racing, Birdman enjoyed spending time with his nieces
 and nephews, playing cards, shooting pool, and burning up ammunition. 
It was rare to spot him without a Springer Spaniel by his side, and he 
always seemed to have an enormous cat around the house. Jerry will 
forever be remembered for his huge heart, his fantastic sense of humor 
and his distinctive Birdman laugh.
 Jerry is survived by his two sisters, Constance Von Feldt and her 
husband Jim of Victoria, and Janet Kaba Moss of Hoxie, nieces and 
nephews, extended family, and countless friends.
 He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Norma Bird; Grandparents, Henry and Lillian Bird and Frank and Mary Hornbeck.
 Graveside services will be held at the Plainville City Cemetery, 
Saturday, August 15, 2020 at 11:00 A.M. Visitation will be held at the 
Plumer-Overlease Funeral Home, Plainville, Kansas on Friday August 14,

Hays, Kansas, passed away Saturday, August 8, 2020, at Hays Medical 
Center. He was born October 31, 1943, in Naponee, Nebraska, to Wayne and 
Ella (Bedore) Harwood. Leland attended Hays High and earned a Bachelor 
of Business Administration from Northwood University in Midland, 
Michigan. On April 12, 1977, he married Kerry Pfannenstiel in Hays.

Leland was a retired US Army MSG. He was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Hays.

He is survived by his wife, Kerry of 
Hays; a daughter, Katara Harwood of Colorado; two brothers, Jay Harwood 
of Grand Junction, Colorado and Keith Harwood of Great Bend.

He was preceded in death by his 
parents; two brothers, Gordon Harwood and Chester Delaine Harwood; a 
sister, Carol M. Binder; three nephews, Dale Leon Harwood, William

Leland G. 'Jack' Harwood

Louise C. Hammerschmidt, 96, Victoria, died Sunday, August 9, 2020, at her son’s home in Topeka.

She was born June 22, 1924, in Catharine, the daughter of Paul and Mary (Seitz) Miller.&nbsp; On August 25, 1947, she was united in marriage to Joseph F. “Joe” Hammerschmidt in Catharine, and they celebrated 51 years of marriage before he preceded her in death on December 1, 1998.&nbsp; She worked numerous jobs, but her favorite was at Travenol Laboratories.&nbsp; Her memberships included The Basilica of St. Fidelis Catholic Church, St. Fidelis Christian Mothers, and the Victoria VFW Post #1751 Auxiliary.&nbsp; She enjoyed flower gardening, was a great cook, loved baking, and enjoyed preparing chocolate chip cookies, homemade noodles, and fried chicken, which were family favorites.&nbsp; She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.&nbsp; Louise often said, “Prayer is very powerful.”

Survivors include a son; Ron Hammerschmidt and wife Mary Anne of Topeka, a daughter; Mary Beth Green and husband Ron of Lawrence, a daughter-in-law; Pat Hammerschmidt of Hays, a sister Mary Agnes Hayes of Topeka, nine grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband; Joe, two sons; Don and Bob Hammerschmidt, nine brothers, five sisters, and a brother-in-law; Bob Hayes.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 am on Monday, August 17, 2020 at The Basilica of St. Fidelis in Victoria, with Fr. John Schmeidler officiating.&nbsp; Visitation will be from 10:00 am until 11:00, with a Christian Mothers rosary at 10:30 am, all on Monday at The Basilica.&nbsp;

Leland Martin Nuss, 97, of Russell, Kansas, died on Saturday, August 08, 2020, at the Russell Regional Hospital in Russell, Kansas.

Leland was born on the family farm on December 30, 1922, in Russell County near Milberger, Kansas, the son of Edward and Amelia (Karst) Nuss.  He grew up in and attended local country schools in Milberger.  He met, fell in love and was united in marriage to Frances Alberta Holl on October 16, 1953, in Russell, Kansas.  He took over the family farm and loved working hard to make the farm as successful as possible.  Leland and Frances were blessed with two children, a son Monte and a daughter Sandra.  They were members of the St. John Lutheran Church in Russell, Kansas.  He was an avid Kansas University Basketball fan and loved attending his granddaughters sporting events. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Surviving family include his wife Frances of Russell, Kansas; son Monte Nuss and wife Mary of Russell, Kansas; daughter Sandra Doherty of Hutchinson, Kansas; 5 grandchildren David (Susan) and Brian Doherty, Erica (Ryan) Feil and Kaci and Whitney Nuss; 3 great grandchildren Bryson and Lawson Feil and Andy Doherty.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Delmer, Earlin and Eugene Nuss; sister Ruth Mai and great-granddaughter Carly Doherty.

Graveside services will be held by the family at the Russell City Cemetery in Russell, Kansas, at a later date.  Visitation will be held from 1:00 PM to 7:00 PM, Friday, August 14, 2020 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary.  Memorials may be given to Russell Recreation Commission and sent in care of the mortuary. Dennis L. “Pete” Malleck, age 78, formerly from Indianola, NE passed away at Hays Medical Center in Hays, KS on August 6, 2020.  Pete was born in McCook, NE on March 5, 1942, to James and Genevieve (Powers) Malleck.   He attended school in Indianola graduating from Indianola High School in 1960.  He excelled in in all sports especially basketball.  Pete continued his education attending Milford Trade School in Milford studying diesel mechanics. 

On August 13, 1960, Pete was united in marriage to Marilyn McConville.  They would have celebrated 60 years of marriage this year.  He was a charter member of the Russell Cross-Trailers Square Dance Club, an active member of the Petticoat Poppers Square Dance Club of Hays, KS, a member of the Knights of Columbus Russell Council, a member of the Leisure Years Center in Ness City where he enjoyed the food and playing cards, and a member of the Sacred Heart Parish of Ness City, where he attended daily mass.  He helped with distribution of commodities in Ness City. Pete enjoyed his family, playing solitaire, traveling and tinkering in his shed.  He had a great talent for fixing things.

Pete worked as a bottom-hole pump specialist working in the oil fields from Indianola, NE to Russell, KS to Hays, KS and finally to Ness City KS.  He retired from Sunrise Oilfield Supply in Ness City, KS. 

He was preceded in death by his parents: Jim and Genevieve; brothers: Marvin and wife Judy, Tom and wife Sherry; sisters: Jane and husband Dan Bahl and Judy Malleck Keith; brother-in-law: Joe Ried.

Pete is survived by his wife: Marilyn of Ness City, KS; daughter: Vanessa and husband Terry Rinehart of Burlington, CO; 4 son: Kevin and wife Gina of Topeka, KS; Tom and wife Lynn of Basehor, KS; Paul and wife Kelly of Victoria, KS; Matt and wife  Megan of Basehor, KS.  His granchildren, Josh and Clarissa Rinehart, Nick Rinehart and Samantha, Ben Rinehart and Krista, Andrew and Casey Malleck, Adam and Marah Malleck, Michael Malleck and Amber, Tony and Marissa Malleck, Josh and Mallory Koerner, Emma Malleck, Erica Malleck, Madison Malleck and Mason Malleck. 10 great grandchildren; 3 step grandchildren and several step great grandchildren; 2 brothers: Lonnie and wife Jo of Indianola, NE; Philip and friend Tammy  of Indianola, NE; 2 sisters: Vonda Parrott of  Lincoln, NE; Jeannine Reed of Lincoln, NE; brothers-in-law: Randy Keith of Indianola; Robert wife Kathy McConville, Indianola, NE; sister-in-law: Cecelia Saladen of Santa Fe, NM.

Visitation will be held at the Herrmann Jones Funeral Chapel in McCook on Thursday, August 13, 2020 from 10:00 AM till after Rosary, with the family greeting guests from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Leo V. Friebus, 86, of Russell, Kansas, passed away Sunday, August 9, 2020, at Main Street Manor in Russell.

Leo was born August 19, 1933, in Dorrance, Kansas.  He was the son of John C. and Lydia (Wallert) Friebus.  He grew up in Dorrance and graduated from Dorrance High School.

Leo was united in marriage to Janice M. Prediger on July 4, 1954, in Dorrance.  This union was blessed with two sons, Dwight and Drew.  They made their home on a farm outside of Dorrance.  Janice preceded him in death on March 24, 2020.

Leo V. Friebus, 86, of Russell, Kansas, passed away Sunday, August 9, 2020, at Main Street Manor in Russell.Leo was born August 19, 1933, in Dorrance, Kansas. He enjoyed fishing and taking care of his black angus cattle.Leo’s surviving family include his two sons, Dwight Friebus (Stacey) of Greeley, Colorado and Drew Friebus (Molly) of Russell, Kansas.Leo was preceded in death by his parents; wife Janice; two brothers, Ernest Friebus and Melvin Friebus; and five sisters, Emma Smith, Ella Rumley, Eva Mae Schmidt,Violet Stull and Elsie Sebesta. A private family service will be held at a later date. The family has chosen Cremation and no visitation will be held. A Memorial has been established with the First Lutheran Church of Dorrance.
