Alice Jean Killian

Edna Isabella (Deines) Mai, 99, of Russell, Kansas, passed away Friday, April 23, 2021, at the Homestead Assisted Living in Russell.

Edna was born on November 21, 1921, on the family farm.&nbsp; She was one of five children born to Ferdinand and Amalia “Mollie” (Mai) Deines.&nbsp; She grew up on the farm south of Russell near the Smokey River.&nbsp; She attended country schools, achieved her GED and had college credits in Accounting.

Edna was united in marriage to Edward Mai on Feb. 16, 1941, in Russell.&nbsp; During WWII, Edna lived with his and her parents until Edward returned home and then in 1946, they moved to the farm.&nbsp; This union was blessed with four children: Gerald, Robert, Linda and Marilyn.&nbsp; Edward preceded her in death on February 6, 1984.&nbsp;

Edna was a devoted farmer’s wife and homemaker. Her cooking skills were unequaled. Her strong work ethic and positive attitude made her the lady so many loved and respected. Her life was guided by her unwavering faith and positive attitude.&nbsp; She was active in St. John Lutheran Church, Lutheran Church Women, Altar Guild and the Quilters group.&nbsp; She made hundreds of quilts throughout her life, making her last one at the age of 97.&nbsp; She was past President of American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, a member of the F.C.E., the Garden Club of Russell, and the Russell County Saddle Club. &nbsp;

Edna’s surviving family includes her son, Gerald Mai (Mary) of Russell, Kansas; daughters, Linda Dunekack (Larry) of Pittsburg, Kansas and Marilyn Haffner (Doug) of Shattuck, Oklahoma; sister, Rosetta King of Tulsa, Oklahoma; nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Edna was preceded in death by her parents; husband Edward; son Robert Mai; brother Palmer Deines; sisters, Delma Dumler and Estella Boxberger; and infant grandson, Timothy Gerald Mai.

Celebration of Edna’s Life will be held at 10:30 AM, Tuesday, April 27, 2021, at St. John Lutheran Church.&nbsp; Burial will follow at the Russell City Cemetery.&nbsp; Visitation will be held from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM, Monday, April 26, 2021 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell with the family present to greet friends from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM.&nbsp; 

Memorials have been established with St. John Lutheran Church or Homestead Assisted Living.&nbsp; Contributions and condolences may be sent to Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, who is in charge of these arrangements.

Tyrrell "Terry" J. Favre, 77, of Greenwood, Arkansas, died at his home, April 21, 2021. Terry was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer in March and bravely chose to forgo treatment so he could enjoy his remaining days at home with his family and friends. 

Terry was born February 1, 1944, in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, to Edward and Eunice (Neilson) Favre. He attended Bay High School until joining the US Air Force at the age of 17. While in the Air Force, he received his GED and served as a loadmaster on C124’s based out of Clark Field, Philippines. 

Terry had a passion for hunting, fishing, carpentry and drag racing. His most recent passion was operating Favre Gun Sales in Hill City, Kansas. He retired in February 2020 and relocated to Arkansas. Terry was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Edward (EJ) Favre. 

He is survived by his wife Lee (Leona Voss) of 49 years; two sons, Terry Moran and wife Darlene of Greenwood, Arkansas, and Jason of Palm Springs, California; two daughters, Stephanie Favre of Omaha, Nebraska, and Donna Stange of Underwood, Iowa; a sister Linda Favre and a brother Gerald Favre and wife Dominica of Bay St. Louis, Mississippi; a sister-in-law Judy Favre (wife of brother Edward), numerous nieces and nephews, nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Donna R. Elder was born April 27, 1934, to Thomas and Ruby (Smith) 
Mills in Kensington, KS.&nbsp; She attended all grades of school in 
Kensington and graduated in 1952.&nbsp; In July 1953, she married Gilbert 
Elder in Englewood, CO.&nbsp; To this union 2 daughters were born, RaeJean 
(1956) and Gaylene (1959).&nbsp; In 1958, they made their home in 
Scottsbluff, NE.&nbsp; Gilbert and Donna later divorced.&nbsp; 

In 1968, Donna 
began her career as a nurse’s aide at St. Mary’s Hospital.&nbsp; In 1972, she 
graduated with the first LPN Class at NWC.&nbsp; She continued working for 32
 years at St. Mary’s and later RWMC.&nbsp; She retired in 1999 and began 
respite care and was a foster Grandma at Roosevelt Elementary.&nbsp; She 
taught Sunday School and helped with the Awana program at Gering Zion 
Church for many years.&nbsp;

Survivors include daughters RaeJean Zollitsch of Conway, SC, Gaylene 
(Bob) French of Minatare, NE; grandchildren Robert (Kelli) French of 
Lyman, NE, Becca (Max) Bradford of Bayard, NE; 5 great-grandchildren; 
sister Fran (Sam) Kirby of Loveland, CO; brother, Alan (Gina) Mills of 
Goodland, KS; and sister-in-law, Mary Ann Mills of Alma, NE.&nbsp;

Donna was preceded in death by her parents; infant sister; Brothers Gary and Dale; infant granddaughter, a niece and a nephew.&nbsp;

Arthur "Dale" Mills will be coming home May 1, 2021 to be laid to rest along with his sister, Donna R Elder (Mills) at 1:00 pm.

Dale passed away Nov. 11, 2004 in Tulsa OK. His ashes have been in the care of his daughter Jamie Mills in Cheyenne, WY.

The son of Thomas and Ruby Mills (Smith) Dale was born March 19, 1948
 in Smith Center, KS. Dale graduated high school in Goodland, KS.

Dale was an avid fisherman. He was an elder of his church and was 
working towards becoming a Pentecostal minister. Dale worked as a 
security guard for ORU, before retiring due to his health.

Dale is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Gary Mills; 
nephew, Robert Kirby; niece, Jenny Mills, and great niece and nephew.

He is survived by daughters, Jody Schiavone (John) of Oregon, Carrie 
Mills (Scott) of Oregon, Jamie Mills of Wyoming and Bobbi Mills of 
Wyoming; brother, Alan Mills (Gina) of Goodland and Frances Kirby 
(Mills) (Sam) of Colorado. Dale’s greatest joys were his grandchildren; 
Brittany Mills, Robert Fife III, Cody Fife (Alexis with baby due in 
October) Saisha Mills-Welchman (Justin with baby due in November) and 
Ariah Mills.

Arthur 'Dale' Mills

Donald Craig Dietz, 63, died on Wednesday, April 21, 2021, at St 
Catherine Hospital in Garden City. He was born on August 19, 1957, at 
Garden City the son of David &amp; Mary (Stewart) Dietz. He married 
Rhonda Renee Brau on September 3, 1983, at Garden City. They welcomed 
their daughter Trisha Anne on March 12, 1985. 
Don graduated from Satanta High School with the Class of 1975. He 
worked in the oil field industry starting with Heimrich and Payne 
Company in 1982. For the past eleven years he has been the Safety and 
Compliance Officer for Hydro Resources. 
He was a devoted husband and father. Don was an avid horseman and 
enjoyed competing with his family and friends. He also enjoyed coaching
 basketball and was known for his beloved team the “Lady Hawks”. He 
will be deeply missed by all who knew him. 
He is survived by his Wife- Rhonda Dietz, Daughter- Trisha Haskell of 
Hays, Brother- Stewart Dietz of Minneapolis and numerous cousins. He 
was preceded in death by his Parents. 
Funeral Service will be at 10:00 AM Wednesday at Garnand Funeral Home in
 Garden City. Graveside Service will be at 2:00 PM at Wakeeney City 
Cemetery in Wakeeney. 
Friends may call from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM Tuesday at Garnand Funeral

Donald Craig Dietz

Willard G. Crabtree Jr., age 64, passed away peacefully at his home 
in Scott County, Kansas on April 18, 2021.&nbsp; He was born on April 9, 1957,&nbsp; in Jackson, Michigan, the son of Willard Gene and Mavis Jane Holland 
Crabtree.&nbsp; A resident of Scott County, Kansas, since 2018 moving from 
Texas, he was a Construction Crane Operator for NCCO.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Scott City, Kansas.

On June 10, 2019, he married Leslie R. Cole in Scott City, Kansas.&nbsp; She survives.

Survivors include his Wife - Leslie R. Crabtree of Scott County, 
Kansas, Five Daughters - Danyell Burrell of Texas, LeAnn Crabtree of 
Michigan, Lynnette Crabtree of Michigan, Margarett Crabtree of 
Minnesota, Chelsea Adams of Kentucky, Three Sons - Willard Crabtree III 
of Kentucky, Micky Austin of Michigan, Henry Crabtree of Minnesota, 
Mother - Mavis Holland of Scott County, Kansas, One Sister - Alonna 
Mantzke &amp; Juan Carrera of Scott City, Kansas, Two Nephews - Steven 
&amp; Renee Howell of Kansas and Baylon Mantzke of Kansas, and Twelve 
Grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his Father, and One Brother.&nbsp;

Willard G. Crabtree Jr.

Iva Gene Behrens, 94, passed away April 20, 2021, at Wesley Medical 
Center, Wichita. She was born January 13, 1927, at Larned Kansas. The 
oldest child of her parents Walter Whaley &amp; Virginia Belle (Burns) 
Ratliff. She married Roy H.E. Behrens December 4, 1946 at Albert.&nbsp; Roy 
died December 26, 2000.

Iva, "GiGi" as her grandchildren knew her, was a longtime resident, 
farmwife and homemaker of rural Albert, moving to Great Bend following 
the passing of her husband.&nbsp; During World War II, her family resided in 
Wichita, where she graduated from Wichita East High School.&nbsp; Iva was a 
member of Peace Lutheran Church, rural Albert, ELCW, V.F.W. Post 3111 
Auxiliary, American Legion Argonne Post 180 Auxiliary, Central Kansas 
Thread Benders and Tangled Threads.&nbsp; She loved spending time with her 
family especially the greats, enjoyed cooking, sewing, and making quilt 
blocks. She liked playing pitch at the senior center, working crossword 
puzzles, playing solitaire and listening to talking books when she could
 no longer read.

Survivors include, two daughters, Jyl Nokes and husband Arlan of 
Great Bend and Cheryl Naugle of Springville, Utah; four grandchildren, 
Mark Naugle and wife Katie, Shawn Naugle and wife Katie, Austin Nokes 
and wife Kathy and Colby Nokes and wife Stacia; nine great 
grandchildren, Lea Nokes, Ella Nokes, Cole Nokes, Kennedy Nokes, Taylor 
Nokes, McKinley Nokes, Maggie Naugle, Henry Naugle and Victor Naugle; 
four step grandchildren, Phillip Naugle, Jr. and wife Lara, Ronald 
Naugle, Melissa Stofferson and husband Lonnie and Michelle Lewis; 
thirteen step great grandchildren; and seventeen step great great 
grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband,

Center, Wichita. She was born January 13, 1927, at Larned Kansas. The 
oldest child of her parents Walter Whaley &amp; Virginia Belle (Burns) 
Ratliff. She married Roy H.E. Behrens December 4, 1946 at Albert.&nbsp; Roy 
died December 26, 2000.Iva, "GiGi" as her grandchildren knew her, was a longtime resident, 
farmwife and homemaker of rural Albert, moving to Great Bend following 
the passing of her husband.&nbsp; During World War II, her family resided in 
Wichita, where she graduated from Wichita East High School.&nbsp; Iva was a 
member of Peace Lutheran Church, rural Albert, ELCW, V.F.W. Post 3111 
Auxiliary, American Legion Argonne Post 180 Auxiliary, Central Kansas 
Thread Benders and Tangled Threads.&nbsp; She loved spending time with her 
family especially the greats, enjoyed cooking, sewing, and making quilt 
blocks. She liked playing pitch at the senior center, working crossword 
puzzles, playing solitaire and listening to talking books when she could
 no longer read.Survivors include, two daughters, Jyl Nokes and husband Arlan of 
Great Bend and Cheryl Naugle of Springville, Utah; four grandchildren, 
Mark Naugle and wife Katie, Shawn Naugle and wife Katie, Austin Nokes 
and wife Kathy and Colby Nokes and wife Stacia; nine great 
grandchildren, Lea Nokes, Ella Nokes, Cole Nokes, Kennedy Nokes, Taylor 
Nokes, McKinley Nokes, Maggie Naugle, Henry Naugle and Victor Naugle; 
four step grandchildren, Phillip Naugle, Jr. and wife Lara, Ronald 
Naugle, Melissa Stofferson and husband Lonnie and Michelle Lewis; 
thirteen step great grandchildren; and seventeen step great great 
grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband,

Iva Behrens

Jean Marie (Johannsen) Skrdlant was born August 4, 1950, at the Rice 
County District Hospital in Lyons, Kansas.&nbsp; Jean passed away at her home
 April 15, 2021.

Jean grew up on her parent’s farm south of Little River, 
Kansas.&nbsp; She attended a two-room country school through eighth grade.&nbsp; 
She then attended and graduated from Little River High School, 
Hutchinson Community College, and Emporia State University, with a 
degree in elementary education.

In 1972, Jean moved to Norton, Kansas where she was 
employed as a fifth grade teacher at Eisenhower Elementary.&nbsp; She kept 
this position for twenty-five years, retiring in 1999.

In 1975, Jean met and married Roy Skrdlant of Norton, 
Kansas. To this union, a daughter, Amy Elizabeth, was born in 1977.&nbsp; 
After their marriage, Roy and Jean lived in Norton.&nbsp; They moved to their
 home south of town in 1980 after they completed their house that they 
designed and built themselves.

Jean was a member and past chapter president of Delta 
Kappa Gamma (an honor society in the teaching field), a member of the 
American Legion Auxiliary, Norton Community Fund, American Cancer 
Society, and served on several committees at Eisenhower such as 
Professional Development Council, School Improvement Team, Eisenhower 
Team, and National Geographic Geography Bee.

Jean’s hobbies included needlepoint, counted 
cross-stitch, and playing the piano before she suffered a stroke in 
January of 1998.&nbsp; Part of her rehabilitation from the stroke was to 
organize all of her friends and family’s birthdays and anniversaries, 
and send them cards.&nbsp; She still did that clear up to the end. She 
enjoyed her family, friends, reading, traveling, and working on the 
computer.

Jean is survived by her husband Roy of the home, daughter
 Amy and husband Brett Adams of Shawnee, Kansas, two sisters: Mary 
Traveny of Ridgway, Pennsylvania, and Shirley Johannsen of Topeka, 
Kansas, two sister in-laws: Pat Johannsen of Little River, Kansas, and 
Judy Johannsen of Concordia, Kansas, two grandchildren: Caiden Adams and
 Rylee Adams, several nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and 
many friends.

She was preceded in death by her father John Johannsen, 
her mother Helen (Burke) Johannsen, four brothers: Robert, Edward, 
Richard, John (Larry), and one sister: Mildred.

Memorial services conducted by the family will be held at
 11:00 am Friday April 30, 2021 at the Christian Church in Norton.&nbsp;

(Bailey) Lundstedt.&nbsp; In August of 1959, he met and married his 
sweetheart, Deanne Sue Dillon, in Hutchinson, Kansas.

Elmer was a newspaper printer and 
worked for the News Chronicle in Scott City, Kansas, for over 40 years.&nbsp; 
He delivered newspapers for 20+ years&nbsp;in Ellis for the Hays Daily News.&nbsp;
 He was an avid Kansas City Chiefs and Kansas City Royals fan, and was 
very active in supporting and attending his grandchildren's sporting 
events.&nbsp; He enjoyed fishing, bowling, and spending time with his 
family.&nbsp; His most cherished time was spent&nbsp;serving and assisting the 
Kansas School for the Deaf and the Deaf Community Culture.

He is survived by his wife, Deanne; 
daughters: Rita (Randy) Phillippi of Lawrence, KS; Tracy (Melvin) 
Kinderdnecht of Ellis, KS; a sister: Ellen Nickel of Scott City, KS; ten
 grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.&nbsp; He was preceded in death

Elmer L. Lundstedt

John Gerald Hansen died on April 21, 2021, at his home south of Colby. He was 89. 
He was born on March 18, 1932, in Kearney, Nebraska. His parents had 
moved there from Thomas County to be nearer to family. He was the third 
of three children born to John Hansen and Sadie K. (Jensen) Hansen, 
after sisters Lillian Elaine and Verna Jean. All three Hansen children, 
oddly, were called by their middle names. 
The Hansen family moved back to Thomas County in 1948. Gerald finished 
his last two years of school at Colby Community High School, graduating 
in 1950. His lifelong love of basketball was born of his experience 
playing on the Colby varsity. He later enjoyed demonstrating his 
two-handed “Dolph Schayes shot” for his sons and their teammates. 
Throughout his life, he was known to cold-callers as John, to friends 
and relatives as Jerry, and to his oldest pals as Ole (“o-lee”), the 
inevitable nickname for a tall, fair Scandinavian fellow. 
Gerald attended Kansas State College from 1950 to 1953. Drafted into the
 army, he served in a mobile radar unit based at Karlsruhe, Germany. He 
played on the base volleyball and softball teams and traveled the 
continent on leaves. He also established contact with his mother’s 
cousins in Denmark, with whom she had corresponded but had never met. 
Gerald completed his college education at Fort Hays State College as a 
mathematics major, graduating in 1957. He returned to Thomas County to 
farm with his father. Soon after, he met a new teacher at the high 
school, Joyce Larson. Both were pleased that the Colby superintendent, 
R. L. Dennen, approved the match. They married in Joyce’s hometown of 
Concordia, Kansas, on June 23, 1957. They moved on to the family 
farmstead south of Mingo, homesteaded by Gerald’s paternal grandfather 
Fred in the 1880s but unoccupied since the thirties. Before fixing up 
the house, they had to remove the wheat that had been piled in the 
living room. The couple had three sons, John Mark, David, and Ron. 
Gerald was a man who expressed himself through his actions rather than 
his words. He would not have said it, but he was proud of having 
provided for his family, having stewarded, improved, and increased the 
farm through a third generation, having championed Joyce’s career in 
teaching, having supported his sons as they found their own paths in 
life, having enjoyed the progress of his grandchildren – all girls! – 
and having maintained a farmstead that was spic-and-span and planted his
 wheat, corn, milo, and beans in rows that were straight as an arrow. 
He was a member of the Odd Fellows and the VFW and participated actively
 in their goings-on. He worshiped at the Colby Methodist Church. His 
friendships expanded to include new additions to the Colby community and
 several Coloradans who first came out to hunt his draws and stubble 
fields. Later in life, he and Joyce enjoyed travels with friends to 
Alaska, Mexico, and Europe. He also took the family to Denmark in 1975 
to renew ties with his cousins. 
Gerald Hansen is survived by Joyce, his wife of 63 years; sons Mark 
(Dana) of Chicago, David (Michele) of Wichita, and Ron (Traci) of 
Hutchinson; six granddaughters, two in law school, two in medical 
school, and two in college or soon to be; and nieces, nephews, and 
cousins. His father John passed away in 1972, his mother Sadie in 1994, 
and his sisters Elaine Metter and Jean Ross in 2015 and 1982, 
respectively.

Gregory L. Phillippi

Rita L Unruh, 77, was born in Lyons, KS on November 8, 1941 to Charles 
Lou Tyrrell and Vivian May (Hayden) Tyrrell. She left her earthly life 
on April 19, 2021 after complications from a kidney transplant, from the
 generous act of love from an anonymous donor, to begin her heavenly 
life with God the Father, Jesus Christ the Lord, and the Holy Spirit. 
Rita was preceded in death by her parents, and brother Charles L. &amp; Ann Tyrrell. 
She is survived by her husband, and love of her life Robert R Unruh, to 
whom she was married 58 wonderful years; son Troy R. and his wife Brenda
 A. Unruh, their children Maggie (Margret), Emily, Elizabeth, and Drew 
(Andrew); daughter Gina L. Unruh (late husband Ron G. Unruh) and their 
children Lance &amp; Jackie Unruh, Brock Unruh, Jeremy &amp; Heather 
Unruh, Samantha &amp; Gabe Rijfkogel, and Timothy Unruh; and son Trenton
 S. Unruh and his children, Christopher Richmond, Caleb Unruh, Allie 
(Alexis) &amp; Cody Long, Shay (Shayli) Unruh, Robert Ross Unruh, and 
Carley Unruh; 16 great grandchildren, and her dog Paz, grand dog Katy 
and great grand dog Eloise. 
She is also survived by sister Vivian (Ginger) Miller (late Frank

Barbara Unruh (late Phil Unruh); Carol Berry; Glenda &amp; Kenny Vogel; 
Adele &amp; Kenny Koehn; Denton Unruh (late Joyce Unruh); Martha &amp;

Roger &amp; Donna Unruh; and Danny &amp; Brenda Unruh. She had 41 
nephews and nieces, many friends, and loving spiritual family members. 
In her early years she lived in Chase, KS where her father owned a 
business CL Tyrrell International Dealership and Tyrrell Trucking. She 
met Robert on the campus of Fort Hays State University and was married 
December 1, 1962. She and Robert moved to Garden City, KS in 1966. Rita 
worked at the Associates, Inc., was the secretary to Principal Duane 
Woodson at Garden City High School, and later became partner with Robert
 when he began a scratch State Farm Insurance Agency in 1972. 
Raised a Christian Scientist, Rita met the other love of her life in 
1987, Jesus Christ, through loving friends and was saved, baptized in

in the Lord and in His power and might; she knew how battle in the

Lou Tyrrell and Vivian May (Hayden) Tyrrell. She left her earthly life 
on April 19, 2021 after complications from a kidney transplant, from the
 generous act of love from an anonymous donor, to begin her heavenly 
life with God the Father, Jesus Christ the Lord, and the Holy Spirit. 
Rita was preceded in death by her parents, and brother Charles L. &amp; Ann Tyrrell. 
She is survived by her husband, and love of her life Robert R Unruh, to 
whom she was married 58 wonderful years; son Troy R. and his wife Brenda
 A. Unruh, their children Maggie (Margret), Emily, Elizabeth, and Drew 
(Andrew); daughter Gina L. Unruh (late husband Ron G. Unruh) and their 
children Lance &amp; Jackie Unruh, Brock Unruh, Jeremy &amp; Heather 
Unruh, Samantha &amp; Gabe Rijfkogel, and Timothy Unruh; and son Trenton
 S. Unruh and his children, Christopher Richmond, Caleb Unruh, Allie 
(Alexis) &amp; Cody Long, Shay (Shayli) Unruh, Robert Ross Unruh, and 
Carley Unruh; 16 great grandchildren, and her dog Paz, grand dog Katy 
and great grand dog Eloise. 
She is also survived by sister Vivian (Ginger) Miller (late Frank 
Miller); brother Jack &amp; Maxine Tyrrell; Loretta &amp; Jim Hull; 
Barbara Unruh (late Phil Unruh); Carol Berry; Glenda &amp; Kenny Vogel; 
Adele &amp; Kenny Koehn; Denton Unruh (late Joyce Unruh); Martha &amp; 
Dennis Bell; Susan &amp; Orville Williams; Louise (late Bruce Unruh); 
Roger &amp; Donna Unruh; and Danny &amp; Brenda Unruh. She had 41 
nephews and nieces, many friends, and loving spiritual family members. 
In her early years she lived in Chase, KS where her father owned a 
business CL Tyrrell International Dealership and Tyrrell Trucking. She 
met Robert on the campus of Fort Hays State University and was married 
December 1, 1962. She and Robert moved to Garden City, KS in 1966. Rita 
worked at the Associates, Inc., was the secretary to Principal Duane 
Woodson at Garden City High School, and later became partner with Robert
 when he began a scratch State Farm Insurance Agency in 1972. 
Raised a Christian Scientist, Rita met the other love of her life in 
1987, Jesus Christ, through loving friends and was saved, baptized in 
water, and baptized and filled with the Holy Spirit at Word of Life 
Church, where she served on the worship team and Covenant Women.

Bernita Ann Walters, 87, Catharine, died Wednesday, April 21, 2021, at HaysMed.

She was born March 11, 1934, in Victoria, the daughter of Edmund and Eva (Weigel) Schuetz.&nbsp; On July 13, 1955, she was united in marriage to Alfred J. “Fritz” Walters in Catharine, and they celebrated 56 years of marriage before he preceded her in death on November 2, 2011.&nbsp; She was a cook at Catharine Elementary School for over 30 years.&nbsp; Her memberships included St. Catherine Catholic Church, Hays Daughters of Isabella Circle #254, VFW Post #9076 Auxiliary, and the St. Catherine Christian Mothers Altar Society.&nbsp; She enjoyed reading, watching KU basketball, completing wordsearches, and using her iPad.&nbsp; She made homemade noodles, enjoyed cooking, yearly Christmas baking with her grandchildren, and teaching them how to bake traditional German desserts.

Survivors include two sons: Mike Walters and wife Barb of Colby and John Walters of Hays, three daughters: Donna Almond of Amarillo, TX, Judy Wedermyer and husband Mel of Lawrence, and Rebecca Pfannenstiel of Hays, three half-sisters: Lois Ludwick and husband Craig of Stilwell, Glenda Schuetz of Hays, and Ruth Hoffman husband Dave of Hays, seven grandchildren: Stacey, Julie, Todd, Dustin, Jace, Elizabeth, and Nichole, seven step grandchildren: Brandon , Travis, Kelsi, Nikki, Stephanie, Eric, and Amanda, 12 great grandchildren: Katlyn, Ashlyn, Aidan, Braden, Briley, Dallas, Preston, Macie, Mila, Marlow, Elliott, and Finley, and ten step greatgrandchildren:&nbsp; Ava, Kinley, Kadence, Chevelle, Braxton, Madison, Hailey, JaJuan, Beckett, and Kamdyn.

Bernita Ann Walters

Roland D. Kesler passed away October 21, 2020, at Gove County Medical 
Center, Quinter, KS.&nbsp; He was born February 4, 1927, on the family farm 
southwest of Quinter to Walter Benjamin and Ruth Marie (Miller) Kesler.

Roland attended grade school at the Fairview School.&nbsp; He graduated 
from Quinter High School with the Class of 1944.&nbsp; Roland enrolled in 
McPherson College that fall.&nbsp; At the end of the semester, he enlisted in
 the U.S. Navy for the duration of the war.

He married Valetta Mae Folkers on February 24, 1952.&nbsp; To this union 
were born four sons, Daryl of WaKeeney, Rex (MyHanh) of Houston, TX, 
Gary (Laura) of Ottawa, KS, and Lynn (Bonnie) of St. Cloud, FL.&nbsp; They 
all survive him.

Other survivors include his grandchildren, Jeff (Tara) Kesler, 
McKenzie (Thiago) Baby, Grady (Jessica) Kesler, Brice (Whitney) Kesler, 
Lucas Kesler, Catherine Kesler, Quinten Kesler, Jordan Long, and Chris 
(Cuc) Long.&nbsp; Great grandchildren, Matthew Kesler, Emma Kesler, Aubrey 
Kesler, Connor Kesler, Garrett Kesler, Kobe Long, and Isabella Baby.&nbsp;

Roland became Postmaster of the Quinter Post Office in 1959 and served to 1987.

Roland and Valetta then began the years of “Snowbirds” in Tucson, AZ 
for 3 years, then McAllen, TX for 25 years.&nbsp; During the years from 1990 
to 2009, the fall months were spent volunteering at SERRV in New 
Windsor, MD.&nbsp; Roland found it difficult to describe the pleasure of 
volunteering.&nbsp; He enjoyed many evenings playing winter volleyball and 
playing softball in the summertime.&nbsp; They enjoyed playing cards and many
 games in McAllen, TX, and in their later years.

Jo Ann (Kitts) Unrein, 66, of Russell, Kansas, passed away Sunday, November 22, 2020, at the Via Christi St. Francis Hospital in Wichita, Kansas.

Jo Ann was born November 17, 1954, in Concordia, Kansas.&nbsp; She was one of three children born to Billie O. and Doris (Johnson) Kitts.&nbsp; She grew up on a farm near Mankato, Kansas and graduated from Mankato High School.&nbsp; She then attended and graduated from Ft. Hays State University with a degree in Elementary Education.

Jo Ann was united in marriage to Arlyn Unrein on October 9, 1976, in Hays, Kansas.&nbsp; This union was blessed with twins, Andrew and Angela.&nbsp; They made their home in Hays for a couple of years before moving to Russell. &nbsp;

Jo Ann was a Trainer for Department of Children and Families for over 34 years before her retirement last year.&nbsp; In her spare time she enjoyed gardening, sewing, doing crafts, and most importantly, spending time with her grandchildren.

Jo Ann’s surviving family include her husband of 44 years, Arlyn of the home; daughter, Angela Bowers (Jason) of Lenexa, Kansas; son, Andrew Unrein (Jen) of Grain Valley, Missouri; brother, Mel Kitts (Synda) of Goddard, Kansas; sister-in-law, Beth Kitts of Crown Point, Indiana; and eight grandchildren.

Jo Ann was preceded in death by her parents and brother Robert Kitts.

A Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 AM, Friday, April 23, 2021, at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary.&nbsp; Cremation has taken place.&nbsp;

Fred Laverne “Sleepy” Helzer, 85, died Monday April 19, 2021, at Lane 
County Hospital in Dighton, Kansas. He was born July 23, 1935, in Lane 
County, the son of George Frederick and Beulah Elsie (Wheeler) Helzer. 
Sleepy was a lifelong resident of Dighton, attending and graduating from
 the local schools and working for various farmers in his adolescence 
becoming a jack-of-all-trades. He then drove the tire truck for Farmer’s
 Oil for many years before becoming a road grader operator for the 
county, from which he retired. He loved to fish, took great pride in 
making his own jelly to share with friends, and was all around a pretty 
good cook. Sleepy was a well known staple in the community, often 
offering his supervising skills to the locals working at various tasks. 
Sleepy is survived by 4 Siblings- Bernita Maris of Garden City, Kansas; 
Lois Fiessenger of Newton, Kansas; Lyle Helzer of Goodland, Kansas; and 
Bev Hall of Bazine Kansas along with numerous nieces, nephews, and other
 extended family members. He was preceded in death by his Parents and 
Siblings- Wiley Helzer, Delores Williams, and Harlan Helzer. 
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 am Saturday April 25, 2021, at the
 First Christian Church in Dighton, Kansas. Visitation will take place 
from Noon to 8:00 pm Friday April 23, 2021 at Boomhower Funeral Home in

Fred Laverne 'Sleepy' Helzer

David Neifert, 64, was born February 21, 1957, to Keith and Audrey 
(Porter) Neifert, at Beloit, KS. He departed this life, April 19, 2021, 
after a constant battle of health issues. He grew up on a farm south of 
Glen Elder, KS, along with two sisters and a brother. He was a member of
 Friends Church and had accepted Christ as his Saviour at a young age. 
He left home to farm on his own and lived on his granddad’s land near 
Ionia, KS. During this time, he met the love of his life, Kim and they 
were married October 10, 1981. They made their home by Ionia and then 
later Glen Elder. To this union was born, a son, Dane and a daughter, 
Alecia. Later on he worked at the elevator in Glen Elder and then in 
Jewel, KS. In 1995, he moved his family to Stafford county, KS, where 
worked at the Radium Coop, running a spray rig and then eventually 
managing the fertilizer department there. In 2002, he had to retire due 
to his disability. In 2006, he earned an Associate’s Degree in Technical
 Accounting and did bookkeeping for D&amp;M Marketing.

Dave took pride in his work and being able to provide for his family.
 He loved coyote hunting with his beloved greyhounds and later with just
 a rifle. His hobbies included playing poker, collecting guns, knives, 
Budweiser holiday mugs, and spending time with his pets. He also enjoyed
 spending time with his family and his most favorite thing of all was 
being a Papa to his four grandchildren.

His sense of humor and ornery streak gave him the ability to deal 
with all of the obstacles life threw at him, including two below the 
knee amputations and a below the elbow amputation and numerous health 
issues. He was a courageous fighter and never gave up. He was our hero. 
He was a very loyal person and he loved his family with his whole heart.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his sisters, Janila 
Smith and Wanda Dunn. He leaves to mourn his wife, Kim Neifert of the 
home; a son, Dane Neifert of Salina, KS; a daughter, Alecia Keenan and 
son in law, Jared of Hoisington, KS; four grandchildren, Aubrey, Ayla,

 </figure>David Neifert, 64, was born February 21, 1957, to Keith and Audrey 
(Porter) Neifert, at Beloit, KS. He departed this life, April 19, 2021, 
after a constant battle of health issues. He grew up on a farm south of 
Glen Elder, KS, along with two sisters and a brother. He was a member of
 Friends Church and had accepted Christ as his Saviour at a young age. 
He left home to farm on his own and lived on his granddad’s land near 
Ionia, KS. During this time, he met the love of his life, Kim and they 
were married October 10, 1981. They made their home by Ionia and then 
later Glen Elder. To this union was born, a son, Dane and a daughter, 
Alecia. Later on he worked at the elevator in Glen Elder and then in 
Jewel, KS. In 1995, he moved his family to Stafford county, KS, where 
worked at the Radium Coop, running a spray rig and then eventually 
managing the fertilizer department there. In 2002, he had to retire due 
to his disability. In 2006, he earned an Associate’s Degree in Technical
 Accounting and did bookkeeping for D&amp;M Marketing.Dave took pride in his work and being able to provide for his family.
 He loved coyote hunting with his beloved greyhounds and later with just
 a rifle. His hobbies included playing poker, collecting guns, knives, 
Budweiser holiday mugs, and spending time with his pets. He also enjoyed
 spending time with his family and his most favorite thing of all was 
being a Papa to his four grandchildren.His sense of humor and ornery streak gave him the ability to deal 
with all of the obstacles life threw at him, including two below the 
knee amputations and a below the elbow amputation and numerous health 
issues. He was a courageous fighter and never gave up. He was our hero. 
He was a very loyal person and he loved his family with his whole heart.He was preceded in death by his parents; and his sisters, Janila 
Smith and Wanda Dunn. He leaves to mourn his wife, Kim Neifert of the 
home; a son, Dane Neifert of Salina, KS; a daughter, Alecia Keenan and 
son in law, Jared of Hoisington, KS; four grandchildren, Aubrey, Ayla, 
Jace and Jatyn; a brother, Dennis Neifert and his wife Carrie of

On the afternoon of April 18, 2021, Sean departed Cheyenne County Hospital in Saint Francis, KS surrounded by family. Destination: The Big Fishing Hole in the Sky. Sean was 49 years old.

Sean was born to Donna Mitchell Miller and Michael “Mick” Miller on September 24th, 1971, in Goodland, KS. The oldest of two children, Sean was known for his big heart, quick wit, and a smart mouth.

He attended Goodland schools—lived, worked, hunted, and fished in various locations of Northwest Kansas all his life.&nbsp; Shortly after high school, Sean snagged the catch of his life, Sandy and they tied the knot April 13th, 1991.

Sean was a proud and devoted father, grandfather, brother, son, uncle, and friend.&nbsp; Together he and Sandy celebrated their Angel Child, Darcy, and wrangled four rowdy, equally stubborn boys who have all grown into fine young men.&nbsp; Seth, Shay, Saje, and Shadd all enjoyed hunting, fishing, and working alongside their dad. &nbsp;

In his free time, Sean could be found tending to his turkeys, or cuddling his many chickens.&nbsp; An avid outdoorsman, Sean enjoyed hunting, and a bad day’s fishing was better than a good day doing anything else... Well almost, Sean’s proudest accomplishment was gaining the title Grandpa.

Sean loved his family, grandkids, nieces, nephews, and friends whole heartedly.&nbsp; Though we will all remember his colorful language and hand gestures, goofy faces, and practical jokes, mostly Sean will be remembered for his love and devotion to those closest to him.

Sean was preceded in death by infant daughter Darcy Lynn Miller, maternal grandparents- Donna and John Butts, paternal grandparents- Myron and Darlene Miller, and mother and father-in-law O.D. and “Janny” Mote.

Sean is survived by wife of 30 years Sandy Mote Miller, four sons- Seth (Cailee), Shay (Rachel), Saje (Nataly), and Shadd, grandchildren- Lila, Oliver, and Koah, parents- Donna Mitchell Miller, and Mick (Leslie) Miller, sisters- Tara Avelar (Ponch), Kelli Minor, and Randi Jo Gray (Malcolm), brother-in-law Tracy Mote (Jo), sisters-in-law Kelly Tipton (Randy), and Stephanie Rinehart (Ruben).&nbsp; Sean is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and close family friends.

Roma Lee (Kennedy) Irby, 93, died April 17, 2021, at the Graham County 
Hospital in Hill City, Kansas. She was born June 21, 1927, to Carroll 
Earl and Blanche Olive (Lee) Kennedy in Niles, Kansas. Roma Lee had one
 brother, Carroll (Ken) Kennedy and four sisters: Ilene Wallace, Ruth 
Norsworthy, Ora Mae Irby, and Doris Woods. 
 The family moved several times during Roma Lee’s childhood due to 
the Depression Era. One of her favorite memories was while they lived 
in Colby. At that time, she was in the fifth grade and was chosen to be
 “Student of the Month”. In recognition and honor of this award, she 
was invited to attend the Lyon’s Club dinner. This was a very special 
experience and memory that lasted the rest of her life. 
 Roma Lee graduated from Manhattan High School in Manhattan, Kansas,&nbsp; in 1945. She was accepted to and attended the Kansas University of 
Nursing School in Kansas City, Kansas, where she graduated with her 
Diploma Nursing Degree in 1948. Here she made several friends that she 
remained close the rest of her life.
 Upon graduating from nursing school, she attempted to enlist in the 
United States Army as an Army Nurse. However, due to health issues she 
could not join. Feeling disappointed and not sure what she wanted to 
do, she moved to the Chicago area where she lived with her brother, Ken 
and sister-in-law Lois and sister, Ilene, and brother-in-law Ben where 
she helped with their children and worked at a nearby hospital. Later 
she returned to the Topeka area where she learned of a new hospital 
opening in Wakeeney. Roma Lee was one of the first nurses that helped 
open this hospital.
 On her weekends off from the hospital, a friend from nursing school,
 Betty (Stephen) Wertz, would bring her to Bogue. Betty introduced her 
to her soon-to-be husband, Donald Eugene Irby. The couple were married 
July 6, 1952.
 Don was enlisted in the United States Air Force. Shortly after they
 were married, he was stationed in Anchorage, Alaska. Their first 
daughter, Becky, was born while they lived there. Upon Don’s discharge 
from the Air Force, they returned to Bogue. They had three more 
daughters: Patty, Jackie, and Cindy and one son, Dan. 
 Roma Lee was a stay-at-home wife and mother until her youngest, Dan,
 went to school. Seeking to get back to her nursing, Roma Lee took a 
part time job at the Bogue Grade School as the school nurse. She later 
became the school nurse for Unified School District #281.
 On May 9, 1967 Roma Lee lost her beloved husband, Don, leaving her 
to raise their five children alone. Through her faith in God and her 
strong sense of duty, Roma Lee persevered. She worked not only as a 
school nurse during the school year but in the summers, she worked at 
the Plainville and the Graham County hospitals. One summer she was 
hired as the Graham County Nurse. Roma Lee not only used her medical 
knowledge in the work force, but for the community as well. She was 
always available to those needing a blood pressure check, an allergy 
shot, or just a listening ear. Each treatment was followed with a hug 
and a fresh baked cookie. You could also find Roma Lee volunteering 
wherever needed. She served as a Sunday School teacher and helping with
 service project through UMW and TPM clubs. Roma Lee had a love for 
reading that caused her to volunteer to serve on the Graham County 
Library Board where she was instrumental getting the new Graham County 
Library built and establishing a countywide bookmobile that brought 
books to all the outlying communities for many years.
 Roma Lee will forever be known as the town “coffee lady." The 
coffee pot was always on and the door was always open. No matter the 
time of day, you could find a table full of friends, relatives and 
neighbors sitting together solving all world’s problems. Everyone was 
welcome. 
 Roma Lee was preceded in death by her husband, Don; her parents, 
Carroll and Blanche; her daughter, Becky; her sisters: Doris and Ilene, 
and her brother, Ken. 
 Left behind to celebrate her life are daughters: Patty and husband, 
Larry Thurlow of Bogue, Jackie and husband, Jeff Johnston of Champlain, 
Minnesota, and Cindy and husband Dean Savell of Midlothian, Texas; her

Norsworthy, of Raleigh, North Carolina and Ora Mae Irby of Logan;

 Andrew and Sara Johnston, Joe and Lu Johnston, Tiffany and Billy 
Clifton, Jessica Savell, Jake Savell, and Dylan and Brandie Irby; great

Robert
 N. Redman was born on December 14, 1968, in Great Bend, Kansas, to Robert
 and Beverly (McNerney) Redman and passed away on April 9, 2021, in 
Lincoln, Nebraska, at the age of 52 years, 3 months and 26 days. Robert 
attended school in WaKeeney, Kansas and later at the Youthville facility
 in Dodge City, KS.&nbsp;

&nbsp;Robert
 worked at several jobs, but he was the happiest when he was building 
pallets through a program at Youthville.&nbsp; He later relocated to Hays, 
Kansas to be near his mom and sister’s family where he worked at 
Schilleci's Deli and Best Radiator Shop.&nbsp; He had such admiration for his
 employers who always treated him with kindness. Robert had a memory of 
an elephant. If he went somewhere, he always remembered the address from 
that time forth. You never got lost with Robert in the car. He 
remembered everybody's birthdays and phone numbers as well and he could 
recite them off the top of his head.&nbsp;

 the time of his mother's death, Robert moved to the Lincoln, Nebraska,&nbsp; area to be closer to his sisters and their families for the remainder of
 his life.

Robert
 was preceded&nbsp;in death by his mother and father, Beverly (McNerney) and 
Robert Redman; sister, Leslie (Redman) Calvin; his maternal 
grandparents, Georgia and Gerald McNerney, paternal grandparents, James 
Redman, Maxine and Bob Nausland.

Survivors
 include his sister, Glora Lee Hayek and husband, Donald, sister, Tammy 
Sue Redman; nephews and nieces, Joshua Hayek, John Hayek, Jamie 
Meierdierks and husband, Mitchell, Joseph Hayek, David Rerucha, Mitzy 
Rerucha, Promise Johnson, Arron Rerucha and wife, Tiffany and Ryan 
Rerucha and wife, Heather, Preston Calvin, Zachary Calvin; cousin, Angie
 Smith and husband, Bill and many great nieces and nephews. To this

 N. Redman was born on December 14, 1968, in Great Bend, Kansas, to Robert
 and Beverly (McNerney) Redman and passed away on April 9, 2021, in 
Lincoln, Nebraska, at the age of 52 years, 3 months and 26 days. Robert 
attended school in WaKeeney, Kansas and later at the Youthville facility
 in Dodge City, KS.&nbsp;&nbsp;Robert
 worked at several jobs, but he was the happiest when he was building 
pallets through a program at Youthville.&nbsp; He later relocated to Hays, 
Kansas to be near his mom and sister’s family where he worked at 
Schilleci's Deli and Best Radiator Shop.&nbsp; He had such admiration for his
 employers who always treated him with kindness. Robert had a memory of 
an elephant. If he went somewhere, he always remembered the address from 
that time forth. You never got lost with Robert in the car. He 
remembered everybody's birthdays and phone numbers as well and he could 
recite them off the top of his head.&nbsp;At
