Longtime Goodland resident Mark DeWayne Bantam, 62, passed away at his home in Goodland on Thursday, July 29, 2021.

Mark was born at Ramstein Air Force Base in Heidelberg, Germany on Dec. 7, 1959 to Jerry D. and Donna (Breathouwer) Bantam.&nbsp; He was one of three children.&nbsp; Mark attended school in Norton and graduated from Norton High School in 1978.

Mark had a love for flying and was an agricultural spray pilot for most of his life.&nbsp; He enjoyed cooking, fishing, long-range marksmanship, woodworking, sprint car racing and off-roading. &nbsp;His larger than life presence and selflessness touched many lives. Mark will be truly missed among his family and friends.&nbsp;

Preceding him in death was his father Jerry, his paternal and maternal grandparents and one nephew, Ryan Bantam.

Surviving family includes his mother Donna Bantam of Norton; his significant other Marla Allen of Goodland; his son Joshua (Stephanie) Bantam of Wichita, two brothers; Michael (Patti) Bantam of Boise, Idaho, and Randy Bantam of Norton; two grandchildren Gavin and Shelby Bantam; one uncle Fred Lindenmeyer of Wichita; many cousins and a host of friends.

Pamela Kathryn (Schmidt) Shaffer – age 73, died Thursday, July 29, 2021 at her home in Hays.

She was born April 15, 1948, in Hays, the daughter of Felix and Angela (Beilman) Schmidt.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Thomas A. Schmidt; and sister, Phyllis A. Schmidt.

She is survived by her husband, Warren Shaffer, of the home; son, Zachary Shaffer and wife, Jaxinta, of Phoenix; daughter, Leah Shaffer and her husband, Benjamin Priess, of St. Charles, Mo.; sister, Sr. Judith Schmidt; sister-in-law, Doris Schmidt; sister, Marla Staab and brother-in-law, Dennis Staab; sister, Donna Schmidt and brother-in-law, Duane Coyle; grandchildren: Phoenix Muller, Ella Shaffer, Marcela Shaffer, Valentina Shaffer, Benjamin Priess, Jane Priess; goddaughter, Tessa Lindenburger; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Pam grew up immersed in farm life among the Volga German community of Catharine. She excelled in academics at Marian High School in Hays. After graduation, she attended Fort Hays State University, then eventually was accepted to graduate school at the University of Arkansas, where she earned her master's and PhD in medieval English and linguistics. At the University of Arkansas in 1971, Pam met and eventually married Warren Shaffer, from Philadelphia, Pa., and the two went on to settle into their careers in Hays. Warren, as a therapist at the High Plains Mental Health Center and Pam, as instructor and eventual professor at Fort Hays State University.

Pam received tenure and went on to educate college students in a variety of courses including intro to linguistics, composition and medieval literature. She served as a writing center director for many years, helping students improve their writing and shaping future tutors.

After 36 years of teaching, she retired and began work on a book of letters from her uncle Monsignor Firmin Schmidt. The book, titled “Letters to Mary: A Missionary Writes Home from New Guinea. 1959 to 63.,” was published in 2020, and is available for purchase on Amazon or Hays local bookstores. True to form, she helped edit this obit.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2021, at St. Catherine Catholic Church, Catharine, Kansas with Father Earl Befort O.F.M. Cap. officiating. Burial will be in St. Catherine Cemetery.

A vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Monday, at Cline’s-Keithley Mortuary of Hays, 1919 E. 22nd St., Hays, KS 67601.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, at Cline’s-Keithley Mortuary of Hays and from 9 to 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Catherine Catholic Church.

Wanda Jean (Deges) Thyfault-Thummel of Hays died Monday, July 12, 2021 at age 72 at the Santa Marta Plaza Health Services in Olathe. She was born March 2, 1949 to Leonard and Dorothea (Engel) Deges and grew up on the family farm by Grainfield.&nbsp; She married Clarence Thyfault on Aug. 8, 1972 in Grainfield, and from this union their son, John Phillip was born.&nbsp; Clarence preceded her in death on May 28, 1979. Then Wanda married Ralph Thummel on June 5, 1987 in Hays. He preceded her in death on March 4, 2021.&nbsp;

&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; Wanda graduated from Grainfield Rural High School in 1967, before earning her bachelor’s degree in sociology and elementary education in 1971, graduating with honors from Marymount College in Salina.&nbsp; She then obtained a master’s degree in elementary education in 1972, from Fort Hays State University Hays.

&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; Wanda had a 34-year career as an elementary school teacher in both third and&nbsp; fifth grade. She began her career as a third-grade teacher at St. Joseph’s Parochial School in Hays where she taught from 1971 to 1973, before moving to Plainville where she taught fifth grade from 1976 to 2005, (except one year of third grade).&nbsp; Mrs. “T," as students called her, possessed excellent teaching skills, knowledge and experience, which were recognized when she received the Teacher of the Year Award in Plainville in 1989, and by regularly being nominated for honors by former students.&nbsp; She was the favorite teacher of many students in Plainville and was regularly thanked by her former students for changing their lives.&nbsp; Mrs. “T” had a passion for teaching that was unmatched, caring deeply for each child, and striving to coax the most out of each child’s unique abilities. She combined toughness and high expectations with love and sincerity in a manner that helped students blossom.&nbsp;

&nbsp; &nbsp; After retirement Wanda enjoyed outings with her friends, spending time with family (visiting and playing cards), reading current events and novels, knitting and completing numerous counted cross stitch projects.&nbsp; Wanda loved her family very much and was a textbook of family history and facts.&nbsp; Also, Wanda enjoyed sharing highlights about her son’s biomedical research accomplishments.&nbsp; In addition, Wanda enjoyed watching her grandsons Miles and Lincoln grow up, particularly tutoring them over the internet during the COVID-19 pandemic. Wanda and Ralph made monthly trips to see their grandsons and lavished them with love and attention.&nbsp; Although a fantastic teacher, Wanda’s favorite passion was being a grandmother.&nbsp;

&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; Survivors include her son, John Thyfault and wife, Jessica, Shawnee; two grandsons, Lincoln and Miles Thyfault; one sister, Eileen Curl and husband, Don, Beaumont, Texas; and Wanda’s brother’s wife, Trudy (Thyfault) Deges, Damar; and special aunt, Esther Weber, Salina; surviving members from the Thyfault family include sisters-in-law, Pat Sis; Trudy Deges; Cathy Smee and husband John; and Mary Engel and husband Ron; surviving members from the Thummel family include brother-in-law, Mark Thummel and wife, Melinda; four sisters-in-law, May Munk; Betty Striggow; Sister Mary Joe Thummel; and Theresa Kriley; also Wanda is survived by many nieces, nephews and friends.

Nancy L. (Zelfer) Opunui, 64, of Dighton, passed away Saturday, July 24, 2021, at the Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital in Wichita. She was born on June 8, 1957, in Topeka, the third child of Frank and Bertha (Johnson) Zelfer.

Nancy’s childhood was spent growing up in Emmett, before moving to Goodland with her family. She then attended school in Brewster, graduating in 1976.

She later met the love of her life, Frank, in Goodland, while he was attending vo-tech. Frank began working in Dighton for the telephone company in 1979; they called Dighton home. On Sept. 6, 1982, Nancy married Franklin “Frank” Keana Opunui in Ness City. This union continued until his passing on January 7, 2021.&nbsp;

Nancy was a member of the First Christian Church in Dighton. She was a devoted homemaker and helped care for many ladies over the years in town. She loved socializing at the Kwik Shop and was one to always find the best garage sales in the area. Nancy was known for her collection of Santas, which were&nbsp;more than 300 collected, and loved showing them off. She loved driving around in her green “Kermit” car. She didn’t get her driver's license until after she was 40 years old. Nancy always wanted to know what her nieces and nephews were up to, as she liked to brag about them to her friends and family.&nbsp;

Nancy was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and brother, Otis Zelfer.

Nancy leaves behind her siblings, Tom (Deloris) Zelfer, of Grainfield, Peggy (Kenneth) Richmeier, of Hays, Kelly (Julie) Zelfer, of New Rockford, N.D., and Sam (Diane) Zelfer, of Goodland; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, one great-great-nephew; and many other family and friends.&nbsp;

Phillipsburg resident Arlen E. Ehm passed away Tuesday, July 27, 2021 at the Phillips County Retirement Center at the age of 86.

He was born August 27, 1934 in Phillips County, the son of John and Anna (Miller) Ehm.&nbsp; He served in the U.S. Army from 1954 until 1956.&nbsp;

He worked as a petroleum geologist in Alaska for many years.

Arlen was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Loren, and a sister Lavonne Baker.

Survivors include his three children: Kevin and wife Sherri of Anchorage, Alaska, Kraig and wife Celeste of Laingsburg, Mich., and Kim Ross and husband Donald of Clark, Mo.; two sisters Melba Bentz of Foley, Ala.; sister-in-law of Lois Ehm of Hutchinson; eight grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.

Cremation was planned. A private inurnment will take place at a later date in the Pleasant View (Dixon) Cemetery, Phillips County.

Ehm passed away Tuesday, July 27, 2021 at the Phillips County Retirement Center at the age of 86.He was born August 27, 1934 in Phillips County, the son of John and Anna (Miller) Ehm.&nbsp; He served in the U.S. Army from 1954 until 1956.&nbsp;He worked as a petroleum geologist in Alaska for many years.Arlen was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Loren, and a sister Lavonne Baker.Survivors include his three children: Kevin and wife Sherri of Anchorage, Alaska, Kraig and wife Celeste of Laingsburg, Mich., and Kim Ross and husband Donald of Clark, Mo.; two sisters Melba Bentz of Foley, Ala.; sister-in-law of Lois Ehm of Hutchinson; eight grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.Cremation was planned. A private inurnment will take place at a later date in the Pleasant View (Dixon) Cemetery, Phillips County.

Donald (Don) Gerald Young, 92, of Colby, died peacefully at home with family by his side on Wednesday, July 28, 2021.

He was born Nov. 19, 1928, in Colby, to Ralph (Babe) and Fannie (Baird) Young.

Don served in the U.S. Navy and was a Korean War veteran. He owned and operated a bricklaying business in Colby for many years. Don was preceded in death by his wife Goldie Young and daughter Diane (Young) Landau. He is survived by his son Robbie Young, of New York; two grandsons and brother Ron (Peggy) Young, of Colby. A private family service took place with burial at Beulah Cemetery, Colby.

A memorial service will be at a later date.

He was born Jan. 24, 1961, at Wausau, Wis., to John Fredrick W. and Darlene S. (Witter) Thiede. He married Cassie M. (Miller) on April 8, 1989, at Burlington, Colo.

He was a line haul truck driver and rancher. John grew up and attended high school&nbsp; in Burlington, Colo. He worked with his brothers in a cattle operation and a trucking company until moving to Hays in 2001. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife, Cassie Thiede, of the home; two sons, JT Thiede and fiancé, Kalesha Ellis, Burlington, Colo.; Cody Thiede and wife Anna, Victoria; one daughter, Tiffanie Rohr and husband, Nathan, Hays; one brother, Glen Thiede and wife, Sheryl, Midas, Nev.; five sisters, Charlayne Bancroft and husband, Jay, Vona, Colo.; Evone Waggoner and husband, Gregg, Quinter; Kristine Richardson and husband, Eric, Burlington, Colo.; Paulette Thompson and husband, Rod, Stratton, Colo.; Debra Thiede and Danny Hill, Winnemucca, Nev.; two grandchildren, Lauraine Evans Thiede and Delilah Rose Thiede; and several nieces and nephews.

Dianne L. Merz, 74, passed away at Parker Adventist Hospital in Parker, CO on July 25, 2021.

Dianne was born on September 9, 1946, in Goodland, KS to Lyman and 
Virgiline (Duell) Amos.&nbsp; Dianne attended and Graduated Goodland High 
School with a diploma in 1964. Dianne then went to Fort Hays for 3 years
 then continued her education in Washburn, KS where she got her 
Bachelor’s Degree in Education in 1969.&nbsp; On June 26th, 1966 Dianne 
married Doyl Merz at the First United Methodist Church in Goodland, KS. 
The couple adopted two sons when they were newborns Steven in 1973 and 
Kevin Merz in 1975.

Dianne started her teaching career in 1969 and continued teaching for
 30 years in the Lawrence, KS school district. Dianne retired in 2008 to
 come back to Goodland, KS to take care of her elderly mother.&nbsp; Dianna’s
 passion was her family, Dianne learned to fly and had her pilots 
license where she would fly mostly in Eastern Kansas. Dianne also 
started a T-Shirt business with aviation designs. Dianne enjoyed her 
flower garden, silk screening, cake decorating, Stain glass, and 
reading.

She was preceded in death by her parents and Grandparents.

Surviving family includes her husband Doyl Merz, her two sons Steven 
(Melissa) Merz of Springfield, MO, Kevin Merz of Lawrence, KS. One 
grandchild Robert Merz of Lawrence, KS. Brothers&nbsp; Ron (Kathy) Amos of

Oma Lee Sharp, 84, passed away July 25, 2021, at her home in Great 
Bend. She was born March 12, 1937, in Pawnee county, Okla. to Elmer 
&amp; Myrtle (Broughton) Heilmann. She married LeRoy Sharp in 1981, at 
Great Bend. He died August 7, 2005.

Oma was a route driver for Sunflower Diversified Services until she 
retired. She was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witness. She 
enjoyed flower gardening and especially loved her canine friend, Sandy.

Survivors include, her sons, Scott Wilkinson (Maxine) and John 
Wilkinson all of Great Bend, Richard Wilkinson (Ruth) of Garden City, 
and Mike Williams (Amanda) of Hutchinson; her daughters, Teresa 
Hannaford of Emporia, and Kim Mendez (Juan) of Great Bend; 12 
grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren; and 2 great great grandchildren. 
She was preceded in death by her parents; her stepfather, Glenn Taylor; 
her husband, LeRoy Sharp; a son, Steven Wilkinson; a daughter, Diane 
Ramos; two brothers, Floyd Heilmann and Raymond Heilmann; and a sister, 
Lela Stillabower.

Scott Edward Deines, 46, passed away July 25, 2021, in Great Bend. He
 was born November 16, 1974, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Herman F. Deines Jr.
 &amp; Alice J. (Clark) Deines.

Coming from Colorado, Scott had lived in Great Bend for the last 
three months. He was a construction laborer. Scott enjoyed fishing, 
working on cars and collecting baseball cards. He had many life-long 
friends from high school that he kept in touch with.

Survivors include, his mother, Alice Deines of Great Bend; his 
siblings, Sheryl Stickler of Great Bend, Tammy DiManna and husband Terry
 of Brighton, Colo., Frank Deines III and wife Shannon of Great Bend, 
and Derek Deines and wife Rachel of Firestone, Colo.; and nine nieces 
and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Herman Deines Jr.

Visitation will be held from noon to 9:00 p.m. Thursday July 29, 
2021, at Bryant Funeral Home, with family to receive friends from 6:00 
to 8:00 p.m. Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday July 30,

Sunday, July 25, 2021, at HaysMed - Hays.&nbsp;Gary was born February 12, 1949,&nbsp; in Great Bend, KS to Dean Elmer and Georgia Mae (Schwab) Cooley and was
 a graduate of LaCrosse High School. In 1981 he married Connie Rose in 
Boulder, CO and would have celebrated 40 years of marriage this August 
1.

Gary was a lifelong musician, a member 
of the Kansas Music Hall of Fame, and a co-founder of The Home Cookin' 
Band with his sweetheart, Connie.&nbsp;They could be found performing at 
weddings and single's dances all over western Kansas.&nbsp;Another passion of
 Gary's was photography, as well as spending time with his 
grandchildren, cheering on the KU Jayhawks, the Kansas City Chiefs, and 
Royals.

Gary is survived by his wife: Connie of
 Hays, KS; sons: Brandon (Sarah) of Hays, KS; Gabriel (Christine) of 
Sonoma, CA; three grandchildren; and a sister: Fran Payne of 
Mississippi.&nbsp;He was preceded in death by his parents.

Gary Dean Cooley

Craig
 Heald, 58, was born into eternal life on July 24, 2021.&nbsp; Craig was 
raised on the family farm in Minneapolis, Kansas, where he graduated from
 Minneapolis High School with the class of 1981.

He
 attended college at Fort Hays, and later enlisted in the U.S. Air 
Force. He was stationed at F.E. Warren AFB in Cheyenne, Wyoming during 
his 22-year career.&nbsp; He served with distinction in several positions and
 earned numerous awards before retiring as the Superintendent of the 
400th Missile Squadron.

Craig
 met and married his wife Heidi in 1990 while they were stationed there.
 After he retired from the military, he continued to serve by becoming a
 teacher.&nbsp; He was a natural teacher and a wonderful mentor to so many of
 his students.&nbsp;

He
 was a member St. Mary’s Catholic church where he and Heidi renewed 
their wedding vows, and he was confirmed in the Catholic Faith in 2018. 
He was a wonderful, caring, devoted, and loving husband to Heidi and a 
genuinely kind person to those he met or knew.

Craig
 recently moved to Houston, Texas to be near his son and his family. He 
continued to teach in Houston bringing his humor and compassion to 
students in class. He was both a teacher and a stable role model to all 
of his students.

He
 is survived by his wife, Heidi; son, Chris (Sara) and grandchildren, 
Ellie Mae and Henry of Houston, TX; parents, Gerald Heald of Winters, CA
 and Llewellen (Lou) (Ron) Weis; sister, Rondee (Clyde) Thrush of

 Heald, 58, was born into eternal life on July 24, 2021.&nbsp; Craig was 
raised on the family farm in Minneapolis, Kansas, where he graduated from
 Minneapolis High School with the class of 1981.He
 attended college at Fort Hays, and later enlisted in the U.S. Air 
Force. He was stationed at F.E. Warren AFB in Cheyenne, Wyoming during 
his 22-year career.&nbsp; He served with distinction in several positions and
 earned numerous awards before retiring as the Superintendent of the 
400th Missile Squadron.Craig
 met and married his wife Heidi in 1990 while they were stationed there.
 After he retired from the military, he continued to serve by becoming a
 teacher.&nbsp; He was a natural teacher and a wonderful mentor to so many of
 his students.&nbsp;He
 was a member St. Mary’s Catholic church where he and Heidi renewed 
their wedding vows, and he was confirmed in the Catholic Faith in 2018. 
He was a wonderful, caring, devoted, and loving husband to Heidi and a 
genuinely kind person to those he met or knew.Craig
 recently moved to Houston, Texas to be near his son and his family. He 
continued to teach in Houston bringing his humor and compassion to 
students in class. He was both a teacher and a stable role model to all

Kirk Lyle Mitchell, 56, of Osborne, KS, passed away on Friday, July 
23, 2021, in Osborne County, KS. &nbsp;Kirk was born on September 24, 1964, in 
Smith Center, KS to Doyle &amp; Lola (O'Connor) Mitchell. &nbsp;He was one of
 several children.

Kirk was a cabinet maker by trade. &nbsp;He has worked for Smith Cabinet 
of Farmington, AR, and cabinet maker in Wichita, KS as well as building 
cabinets on his own. &nbsp;Recently, he has been working at Midway Coop of 
Osborne, KS.

Kirk was an outdoorsman. &nbsp;He loved to fish &amp;&nbsp;go hunting, and 
spend time with his fiance', Becky Snook.&nbsp; Kirk was a hard working man 
and was always there for his family or friends, especially if they 
needed any help.

Kirk loved his children and grandchildren. &nbsp;

Kirk was preceded in death by his parents.

Gloria Ann Dockstader, 82, of Bunker Hill, Kansas, died on Thursday, 
July 22, 2021, at the Homestead Assisted Living Center in Russell, 
Kansas.

Gloria was born on March 18, 1939, on the family farm in Bunker Hill,
 Kansas, the daughter of Guy and Elenore (Sharp) Duvall.&nbsp; The youngest 
of 10 kids she grew up on the farm known today as Duvall Cove and 
graduated from Bunker Hill High School in 1957, and later graduated from
 Union College in Lincoln, Nebraska.&nbsp; She met fell in love and was 
united in marriage to Robert “Bob” Louis Dockstader on September 14, 
1962 in Russell, Kansas.&nbsp; From this union Gloria and Robert were blessed
 with two daughters, Patty and Elizabeth.&nbsp; They made their home in rural
 Russell, Kansas, north of Bunker Hill.&nbsp; She worked as a homemaker and 
farm wife, working together with her husband on the family farm. &nbsp;Bob 
preceded her in death on October 05, 2005.&nbsp; After Bob’s passing, for 
many years, she continued to enjoy raising cattle and horses.&nbsp; She also 
enjoyed driving around the country roads, seeing family and spending 
time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Surviving family include her daughters Elizabeth Krape and husband 
Tad of St. Lucie, Florida and Patty Krape of Russell, Kansas;&nbsp; 2 
grandchildren Ashley Hopper and husband Jeremy of Russell, Kansas and 
Mary Carabajal and husband Calen of Lawrence, Kansas and 2 great 
grandchildren Abigal and Janae Hopper of Russell, Kansas.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, brothers Guy, Duane 
and Dean Duvall and sisters Mary Chard, Isabel Letsch, Vivian Steinle, 
Betty Neill, Wilma Mills and Elnora Cook. There will be a private family
 service at a later date and cremation has been selected.&nbsp; An open 
visitation will be from 9 A.M. to 8 P.M. on Thursday, August 5, 2021,

Betty Joan Bailey Firestone, age 87, of Kearney, Missouri, formerly of 
Colby, Kansas, passed away Sunday, July 25, 2021, at Oak Pointe Senior 
Living. 
Betty was born January 10th, 1934, in Iowa City, Iowa, and grew up in 
Marshalltown, Iowa, Harrisonville, Missouri, and Butler, Missouri. She 
attended college at Central Missouri State from 1952-1954 before moving 
to Kansas City, Missouri where she worked at Katy Drug Store. She then 
attended St. Luke’s School of Nursing from 1955 to 1956. 
Betty was united in marriage to Jim Firestone in March of 1956, in Butler, Missouri. 
In 1957, the couple moved to Kansas City where Betty worked at Hallmark 
Cards. Jim and Betty moved to Sedalia, Missouri, before finally settling 
in Colby, Kansas, in September of 1966, where they made their home and 
raised their family for the next forty plus years. 
In Colby, Betty worked for Montgomery Wards, J.C. Penney’s, Colby Bowl 
and spent ten years at Palace Drug Store. During their time in Colby, 
Jim and Betty owned and operated the Coast to Coast Hardware store in 
downtown, where they proudly served their community. 
Betty attended the First Presbyterian Church in Colby. Betty and Jim 
were huge supporters of the Colby Community College Women’s basketball 
program, Colby High School sports, and the St. Louis Cardinals. She 
volunteered as a Pink Lady at Citizen’s Medical Center and assisted in 
numerous community events and fundraisers. 
Betty enjoyed cooking, reading, listening to music, watching all kinds 
of sports and spending time with family, especially her grandchildren. 
Betty was preceded in death by her husband Jim Firestone. She is 
survived by her children, Lealand (Crystal) Firestone, of Wichita, Lisa 
(Bob) Brown, of Kearney, Missouri, and Lorie (Sal Montalto) Firestone, 
of Phoenix, Arizona; grandchildren, Jory (Katie) Firestone, of 
Alexandria, Virginia, Talia (Jonathan) Patterson, of Wichita, Kansas,

Betty Joan Bailey Firestone

Norma Jean DeYoung, 92, passed away on July 23, 2021, at the Redbud Village in Plainville, KS. She was born to Frank and Neva (Reese) Noah on March 1, 1929, in Center, Colorado.

Jean was a lifetime Graham County resident. She attended Palco High School and graduated salutatorian with the class of 1947. She was united in marriage to Milfred DeYoung on August 20, 1947, at the Redline Church of God. The couple was blessed with three children, whom they raised on their Redline farm near Palco. Jean was a proud farm wife. She loved living in the country, making sure her home was well-kept and the family was fed with her delicious homemade meals. She enjoyed singing, playing the piano and playing board games. &nbsp;

Jean was a faith-filled woman who devoted her life to her family and the Lord. She taught Sunday School and Bible School classes for many years, made meals for church events, and was involved in mission work. She was a bright light for anyone that met her. Jean had a welcoming smile, a great sense of humor, and loved to laugh. May her legacy be a reminder for us to live through Christ’s teachings, love one another deeply, and laugh often.

She is survived by her children; Marsha (Dale) Newell of Hays, KS, Phil (Jo) DeYoung of Colby, KS, Debra (Scott) Unrein of Denver, CO; siblings, Kent (Jeanine) Noah of Wichita, KS, and Deanna Melendez of Hays, KS; two grandchildren, Ian and Jules Unrein; and a great-grandchild, Sullivan Dean Unrein.

Lucida "Luci" Agnes (Walters) Sullivan, age 78, of Olathe, Kansas passed away on Saturday, July 24, 2021.

Luci was born on January 22, 1943, in Hays, KS to Celestina Hertel and Fidelis A. Walters. She graduated from Girls Catholic High in 1961. Then attended Fort Hays State University, earning a B.S. in elementary education in 1966.

She married Terrence Sullivan on June 4, 1966, and moved to Pittsburg, Kansas, in 1970. After retiring in 2008, she moved to Olathe, Kansas, where she enjoyed being close to her children and grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by one daughter, Jill M. Ney (Jeff) of Overland Park, Kansas; two sons, Jeffrey A. Sullivan (Amanda) of Lee’s Summit, Missouri; and Ryan J. Sullivan (Melissa) of Falcon, Colorado; and eight grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister Erma, and one daughter Carrie.

Visitation will be from 10:00 - 10:45 am on Tuesday, August 3, 2021, at St. Paul Catholic Church, 21650 W. 115th Terrace, Olathe, Kansas. Rosary will follow at 10:45, then Mass at 11:00 with Fr. Michael Hermes as celebrant. Luci's remains will be interred at Leavenworth National Cemetery at a later date in a private ceremony.

Lucida 'Luci' Agnes (Walters) Sullivan

Ralph Frederick Voss, 78, of Hoover, Alabama, passed away Friday afternoon, July 23, 2021. He was born April 7, 1943, in Lyons, Kansas, to Albert Frederick and Irene Adams Voss.

His education in the public schools of Lyons and Plainville, Kansas, Fort Hays State University, and the University of Texas at Austin prepared him for his lifelong career as an educator.

Voss taught at the high school in La Crosse, Kansas; Texas A&amp;M University at Commerce; Atlanta Junior College; and the University of Utah before serving for 31 years at the University of Alabama. His academic specializations included Rhetoric I, Composition, and American dramatic literature, and he authored writing textbooks, books about the American playwrights William Inge and Tennessee Williams, and a book about Truman Capote's In Cold Blood, as well as numerous articles in his academic specializations.

Voss was the recipient of the Eugene Current-Garcia Excellence in Scholarship Award given by the Association of English Teachers of Alabama; the Distinguished Tennessee Williams Scholar Award given by the Tennessee Williams Festival of Columbus, Mississippi; and the Jerome Lawrence Award for Distinguished Contributions to the American Theater, given by the William Inge Theater Festival. He was nominated three times for the University of Alabama Judy Bonner Excellence in Teaching Award, given by the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute.

Among his lifelong interests were maintaining friendships with people he knew from everywhere he had ever lived and worked, popular music, singing, strumming his guitar, and going to movies. He loved to read biographies and histories, and after his retirement in 2009 he continued to teach senior courses and make presentations for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute's Greater Birmingham and Tuscaloosa, Alabama chapters. He was a regular participant at the William Inge Theater Festival in Independence, Kansas; and Tennessee Williams Theater Festivals in Columbus and Clarksdale, Mississippi.

Voss is survived by his wife, Glenda Weathers of the home in Birmingham, Alabama; sons, John Voss of Knoxville, Tennessee, Walker Voss of Hays, Kansas, and Collin Voss of Cullman, Alabama; and four grandchildren, Alexandra and Zachary Voss of Knoxville, and Kyler and Kash Voss of Hays.

Cindy Laverentz, 56, died Saturday, July 24, 2021, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

She was born June 1, 1965, at Dodge City, the daughter of Richard 
James and Marie Helen (Baier) Millershaski.&nbsp; She was a graduate of 
Ingalls High School and received her Associates Degree from Garden City 
Community College.&nbsp; She was a lifetime area resident, she worked at Kids
 World Day Care in Cimarron and was a school bus driver and worked in 
grounds maintenance for USD 477 in Ingalls for many years.&nbsp;

She was a member of St. Stanislaus Church in Ingalls and enjoyed arts
 &amp; crafts, crocheting, going to the lake and Peanuts Cartoons.

Survivors include: 3 sons, Scott Laverentz, Woodward, Tom Laverentz, 
Woodward and Rick Laverentz, WaKeeney; her mother, Marie Millershaski, 
Ingalls; a granddaughter, Thea Laverentz; 4 brothers, Bruce Millershaski
 and wife Karrie, Montezuma, Gary Millershaski and wife Jana, Lakin, 
Ralph Millershaski and wife Pam, Ingalls and Greg Millershaski, Ingalls;
 her sister, Sandy Myers, Cimarron; and several nephews and nieces.

Rosary will be at 7:00 pm Thursday, July 29, 2021, at St. Stanislaus 
Church, Ingalls.&nbsp; Graveside service will be at 10:30 am Friday at Sunset
 Memorial Gardens, Garden City, with Fr. James Baker officiating.&nbsp;
