Frank James Herbel, 55, of Russell, Kansas, passed away Saturday, June 26, 2021, at his residence.

Frank was born April 28, 1966, in Russell, Kansas.&nbsp; The son of Theodore, Jr., and Bennie Ruth (Neff) Herbel.&nbsp; He grew up in Russell and worked at the Russell Daily News for many years as a delivery boy.&nbsp; Then he worked as a Pressman before the Daily News was sold.&nbsp; Then he worked for Anderson as a Pressman until the office moved onto old Hwy 40.&nbsp; Frank delivered the Hays Daily News for years and for the last five years delivered the Salina Journal. &nbsp;

Frank enjoyed working on his cars and trucks, drawing pictures especially of Dragons. He loved talking to people on his routes, customers or not.&nbsp; His cats always had a special place in his heart.&nbsp; People always wanted to know why Frank’s name did not start with a D like the rest of his brothers and sisters was because he was named after his maternal grandfather, Frank James.

Frank’s surviving family include his father, Theodore Herbel, Jr of Russell, Kansas.; brothers, David E. Jones (Teri) of New Baden, Illinois and Doren D. Herbel (Carol) of Bartlesville, Oklahoma; sister, Dianna D. Herbel of Russell, Kansas; two nieces; two nephews; four grand nieces; and five grand nephews.

Frank was preceded in death by his mother, Bennie Ruth (Neff) Herbel; sister, Debra (Neff) Schneider; and both sets of grandparents.

A Graveside Service and Burial of Ashes will be held at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, July 6, 2021, at the Russell City Cemetery.&nbsp; No visitation will be held.&nbsp; Condolences may be sent to Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, who is in charge of these arrangements.

John Paul "Jack" Larzalere, 82, passed away June 15, 2021, after a short battle with pancreatic cancer. &nbsp;

Jack was born on September 10, 1938. He 
was adopted from Catholic Charities in Minneapolis Kansas, by his 
parents Charles and Lucille Larzalere.&nbsp; Jack was raised Catholic, where 
he served as an alter boy for many years.&nbsp; He was an avid sports fan and
 a multi-sport athlete growing up.&nbsp; After graduating from Minneapolis 
High School, Jack attended Fort Hays State University, then went on to 
graduate from The University of Kansas. Jack was a member of the Sigma 
Phi Epsilon Fraternity, and majored in business. After graduation Jack 
met Deanna Martin of Glasco, Kansas on a blind date. They were married 
in 1961. He joined the Army shortly after, and the two lived in North 
Carolina where Jack was stationed first at Ft. Bragg, then overseas in 
Korea. Upon returning from Korea, Jack and Dee moved to Denver Colorado,
 where they had their son Brent.&nbsp; They later relocated back to the 
Kansas City area and had their second child Angela. They spent most of 
their married life in Kansas, with a handful of years in Oklahoma City. 
Jack was a commercial banker for the majority of his career. Jack and 
Dee were married 59 years when Deanna passed away in June 2020,&nbsp; almost a
 year to the day of Jack’s passing.&nbsp;

Jack passed on a love of all things 
sports as well as his competitive spirit to his children. He continued 
playing sports throughout his adult life, engaging in tennis and golf as
 well as other activities.&nbsp; He loved coaching his kids as well as 
attending as many KU, Chiefs and Royals games as he could take in.&nbsp; He 
had a very no-nonsense approach to life.&nbsp; Many remember him for his 
infectious smile and belly laugh. He was loyal, honest, and as tough as 
they come. He loved his family fiercely and supported them in everything
 they did. His two granddaughters were the light of his life. &nbsp;

Jack was preceded in death by his wife 
Deanna Larzalere, his parents Charles and Lucille Larzalere, his sister 
and brother in law Bob and Patricia Jones, brothers Frankie and Richard 
Larzalere, his in-laws George and Irene Martin, sister in law Mary 
Martin, brothers in law Dick, Denny, Don, and Darrel Martin. He is 
survived by his two children Brent Larzalere (spouse Amy) and Angela 
Nielsen (spouse Oliver) as well as his two granddaughters Hayden Nielsen
 and Reilli Nielsen, and his sister in laws Dorothy, Louise, and Betty 
Martin, and Judy Larzalere, along with many nieces and nephews.

Jack will be missed dearly, but his family takes comfort in knowing he is with the Lord, and with his bride. &nbsp;

Graveside services will be at 10:00 A.M., Tuesday, July 13, 2021, at the Glasco Cemetery.&nbsp;

John Paul 'Jack' Larzalere

Gary “Bubba” Smith, 56, died June 28, 2021, at HaysMed, Hays, 
Kansas.&nbsp; He was born June 24, 1965, the son of Gary Dee and Janice Marie
 (Cates) Smith.&nbsp; Bubba graduated from Hoisington High School in 1983.

On June 4, 1994, he married Dee Ann Smith in Great Bend, Kansas. She survives.

A lifetime Hoisington resident, Bubba worked in many aspects for City
 of Hoisington for 22 years and was most recently the foreman for the 
Water and Sewer Department. He also enjoyed working part time at the 
Liquor Box.&nbsp; Previous to his job with the city he worked as the 
assistant warehouse manager for Orschelon’s Farm and Home.&nbsp; He was a 
union steward for the former IBEW Chapter 304.

Bubba’s love for sports and his daughters led him to be involved in 
many coaching positions, whether it was the Western Kansas Football 
League or Rec Leagues for basketball, softball, and kids wrestling he 
loved it all. He also loved being part of the HHS chain gang for the 
football games, although he wasn’t able to yell at the games. &nbsp;Being 
part of the pit crew with Bullard and Ward Racing at the dirt tracks was
 also something he enjoyed.&nbsp; At Christmas time there were many families 
that he would visit in his red suit and white beard.&nbsp; He loved to cheer 
on the KC Chiefs and Royals and the black #3 Intimidator, Dale 
Earnhardt, Sr.

He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Dee Ann Smith of the home; 
and three daughters, Presley, Delaney, and Addison Smith of Hoisington; 
mother, Janice Smith of Great Bend; brothers, Michael Smith and wife Jo 
of Great Bend, and Chris Smith and wife Stephanie of St. John; and 
several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Gary Dee Smith and a brother, Ricky Smith.

Family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday at the funeral 
home. Friends may sign the book today and until service time.&nbsp; There 
will be no viewing as cremation has taken place.

Memorial service will be 2 p.m., Friday, July 2, 2021, at 
Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home Chapel, with Reverend Steven Dezotell. 
Inurnment will follow in Hoisington Cemetery.&nbsp; Family would love to have
 those attending, especially the kids he coached, to wear their jersey

Pauline M. Irsik, 104, passed away from natural causes on Monday, June 28,&nbsp; at the home of her oldest granddaughter Michele Irsik Flax, Hays, 
Kansas. She was surrounded by her loved ones. 
Pauline Mabel Allen was born October 24, 1916, in Howell, Kansas. She was
 preceded in death by her husband Steve Irsik in 1999 and granddaughter 
Annie Irsik in 2008. 
She was also was predeceased by her siblings Horace Allen, Lester Allen, Edna Reynolds, Donald Allen and Eldred Johnson . 
Throughout her lifetime, Pauline witnessed great changes to our world 
including, a woman’s right to vote, Lindbergh's non-stop Atlantic 
flight, the Wall St. Crash and Great depression, devastating wars, moon 
landings and 19 U.S. Presidents. 
Pauline attended High School in Dodge City and later attended Dodge City
 Community College and graduated with an Associates of Arts degree in 
1937. She taught at Royal Country school with seven students and earned 
$60 a month. 
Pauline dated Steve Irsik in 1942 until he left for the military in 
1943. He mailed her engagement ring from boot camp and she didn't see 
him again until 1946. Two weeks after he returned from the war, they 
were married on January 21, 1946. Steve passed away just days shy of 
their 53rd wedding anniversary. 
She was a loving and devoted Mother and Grandmother. She is survived by: Steve Irsik Jr. And wife Kay of Sante Fe, New Mexico, Mike Irsik and 
wife Debbie of Emporia, Kansas, Max Irsik and wife Linda of Flagler 
Beach, Florida, Robert Irsik and wife Ellen of Ingalls, Kansas and Ron 
Irsik and wife Tricia of Columbus, Ohio. 14 grandchildren and 21 great 
grandchildren. 
She was an inspiration to all with her profound faith. She believed “Be 
patriotic Americans and trust in God. We owe him praise every day.” 
Pauline enjoyed quilting, art, gardening, playing bridge, music and 
dance. She led an incredible life and loved camping, hiking and 
traveling. 
She has begun her most beautiful journey to date. 
Her service will take place on Thursday July 1st, 10:30 am at the St. 
Dominic Catholic Church, Garden City, Kansas. Graveside dedication to 
follow at Valley View Cemetery in Garden City. There will be no calling
 hours.

Michael D. Lynch, 62, died June 27, 2021, at Medicine Lodge Memorial 
Hospital.&nbsp; He was born January 30, 1959, in Kansas City, Kansas, the son
 of Thomas B. and Betty I. (Middleton) Lynch.&nbsp;

On November 11, 1978, he married Kathy J. Ricke at the Trinity Baptist Church, Hoisington, Kansas.

A resident of Medicine Lodge since 1996, Mike was a retired field 
technician for Targa Resources.&nbsp; He was also the owner and bartender for
 Mike’s Sports Bar in Medicine Lodge until 2012. Mike was of the Roman 
Catholic faith and was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #6618
 of Medicine Lodge.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Kathy J. Ricke; and three 
children, Christopher A. Lynch and wife Casey of Springfield, Ohio, 
Michael D. Lynch, Jr. of Medicine Lodge, and Karen J. Lynch and fiancé 
Greg Sader of Wichita; his mother, Betty Lynch of Great Bend; a brother,
 Thomas Lynch and wife Merrilee of Wichita; four sisters, Mary Johnson 
and husband Kelly of Oak Grove, Missouri, Elizabeth Wooldridge and 
husband Don of Stillwater, Oklahoma, Chris Talbert and husband Larry of 
Great Bend, and Sheryl Lynch of Great Bend; five grandchildren, Madyson,
 Braedon and Gracyn Lynch, and Matthew and McKinnley Piper.

He was preceded in death by his father, Thomas B. Lynch and a sister, Karen J. Lynch.

Michael D. Lynch

Laura Ann Mazouch, 31, passed away June 24, 2021, at her home in 
Salina. She was born July 31, 1989, at Great Bend, to Dennis &amp; Susan
 (Fiedler) Mazouch.

A resident of Salina for the past several years, Laura grew up in 
Great Bend. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Salina. 
She loved gardening and cooking, as well as drawing and painting. She 
was a proud aunt to her nieces.

Survivors include, her mother, Susan Mazouch of Great Bend; a 
brother, Nick Mazouch of Marquette; a sister, Sara Delgadillo and 
husband Steven of Great Bend; four nieces, Aubryauna, Alivia, Adalina 
and Amilia; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. She was preceded in

 Saturday, June 26, 2021, in Phillips County, KS at the age of 64.

Terry was born April 25, 1957, in Phillipsburg, KS the son of Melvin Roy and Anna Louise (Johnson) Gitchel.

He was united in marriage to Donna Kaye Schumacher on October 23, 1982, in Phillipsburg.&nbsp; She survives.

Other survivors include his three daughters Tara Burnham and husband 
Robin of Arvada, CO, Karma Steelsmith and husband Ron of Phillipsburg, 
and Shelby Thomas and husband Andrew of Lawrence, KS; a niece, who was

Ellen I. Nickel, age 96, passed away on Friday, June 25, 2021, at the
 Scott County Hospital in Scott City, Kansas.&nbsp; She was born on March 12,
 1925, in Guide Rock, Nebraska, the daughter of Leeman Jonas and Ethel 
Berniece Bailey Lundstedt.&nbsp; Ellen was a resident of Scott City, Kansas,&nbsp; since 1969 moving from Wichita, Kansas.&nbsp; Beginning in 1947, she was a 
nanny for the Johnson family in Salina, Kansas, and then in Wichita, 
Kansas and referred to them as her “Boys."&nbsp; She was a homemaker.

Ellen was a member of the First Baptist Church in Scott City, Kansas.

On May 11, 1969, she married Richard Henry Nickel in Scott City, 
Kansas.&nbsp; He passed away on September 23, 1974, in Scott City, Kansas.

Survivors include her One Daughter - Gayla Nickel of Scott City, 
Kansas, One Step-Daughter - Deanna Russell of Brandsville, Missouri, Two
 Granddaughters - Bailey Nickel of Scott City, Kansas, Rita Fisher of&nbsp; 
Mountain Grove, Missouri, One Grandson - Joey Russell of Koshkonong, 
Missouri, Three Boys she raised - Sherman Johnson of Kansas City, 
Kansas, Gaylord Johnson of Naples, Florida, Bradford Johnson of Andale, 
Kansas, Eight Great Grandchildren, and Two Great Great Grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her Parents, Two Brothers, One Sister, 
One Grandson, and Two Great Grandchildren, and three Johnson boys -

 Linda was reunited with her parents Henry and Anna Ochs; sisters, 
Eleanor Ruppert (Jack), Dorthy Wasnalas (Lenard), Clara Coppen, and Anna
 Leiker (Julius); brothers Clem Ochs(Emma Helen), Wendolin Ochs 
 ( Viola), Steven Ochs (Betty).

Esther Irene Rassette, 93, of Russell, Kansas, died on Thursday, June
 24, 2021, at the Russell Regional Hospital in Russell, Kansas.

Esther was born on May 27, 1928, in rural Russell County, Kansas, the
 daughter of Alexander (A.D.) and Mollie (Weimaster) Schultz.&nbsp; She was 
raised in the Lutheran Church.&nbsp; She grew up in the Russell and 
Hoisington, Kansas, area and graduated from Hoisington High School.&nbsp; She
 met, fell in love and was united in marriage to William J. “Bill” 
Rassette on October 17, 1948, in Russell.&nbsp; From this union Esther and 
Bill were blessed with a son Eugene.&nbsp; The family moved to Georgetown, 
Colorado in the early 1960’S after purchasing the Herringbone Cabin 
Motel and restaurant.&nbsp; In 1978 they retired and returned to Russell, 
Kansas.&nbsp; She worked hard as a fulltime wife and homemaker.&nbsp; She enjoyed 
crocheting, cooking, playing pitch, watching sports on television and 
traveling across America and over seas.

She is survived by her daughter in-law Maggie Rassette of Abilene, 
Kansas and 4 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren: Matt (Rene) 
Rassette – children Nina and Elijah of Minneapolis, MN, Abigail (Neil) 
Endicott and daughter Georgia, Katherine (Jay) Pankratz and children 
Maggie, Sophie and Penelope of Portland, OR, Emily (Chris) Campbell and 
children Sydney and Aulay.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Bill on October 17,
 2006, son Eugene Rassette September 04, 2002, brothers Willie Schultz, 
Julius Schultz and sister Gladys (Schultz) Shadley. A graveside 
celebration of Esther’s life will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Friday, July

&nbsp;Dorothy&nbsp;graduated from Woodston High School in 1948.&nbsp; She later married
 Delbert Yarnell on June 18 1950&nbsp;and to this union two children were 
born - Sheryl and Micheal. Dorothy and Delbert shared 51 yrs. together.&nbsp;

Except for a few years away from Osborne, Dorothy lived almost all of
 her life in Osborne, Ks. &nbsp;She and Delbert managed the Camalot Inn for a
 couple of years but the majority of her work was as a devoted store 
clerk at Duckwalls. &nbsp;

Dorothy is preceded is death by her parents, three&nbsp;siblings and her 
husband Delbert in 2001. &nbsp;She is survived by her daughter Sheryl (Bob) 
Gorsuch of Osborne and son Mike of Osborne, 2 grandchildren - Lacy 
(Curtis) Holtman&nbsp;and Jeremy, &nbsp;2 great-grandchildren, Amelia and 
Charlotte and brothers Roger &amp; Larry Ives.

Longtime Burlington, Colorado resident, Doris Elizabeth Stevens, 86, 
passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, June 22, 2021 at the Kit Carson County
 Memorial Hospital in Burlington.

Doris was born on June 15, 1935 in Stratton, Colorado to Ruth and 
R.D. Spurlin.&nbsp; She was one of four children.&nbsp; She attended school at 
Solid Center School and Stratton Schools, graduating from Stratton High 
School in 1953.

On September 29, 1953, Doris married Dallas George Stevens at St. 
Charles Catholic Church in Stratton.&nbsp; To this union, six children were 
born; Dana, Debbie, Diane, Devona, Dee and Derek.

In 1958, Doris and Dallas started D &amp; D Cleaners in Burlington, 
where she worked as a seamstress up until the time of her death.&nbsp; Doris’
 hobbies included sewing, coloring, taking pictures, gardening and 
listening to her music.&nbsp; She always kept in touch with her grandkids 
through texting and pictures, and she always loved a fresh bouquet of 
flowers.

Preceding her in death were her parents, one daughter Debbie Knapp, 
her sister Donna Krei, and two brothers Bob and Duane Spurlin.

She is survived by her husband Dallas of 67 years of Burlington, her 
children Dana Stevens of Burlington, Diane (Rob) Windell of Kanorado, 
KS, Devona (Randy) Jensen of Goodland, KS, Dee Herman of Denver, CO, 
Derek (Kara) Stevens of Burlington, and her son-in-law Butch Knapp of 
Burlington.&nbsp; She is also survived by nineteen grandchildren; Arianne

passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, June 22, 2021 at the Kit Carson County
 Memorial Hospital in Burlington.Doris was born on June 15, 1935 in Stratton, Colorado to Ruth and 
R.D. Spurlin.&nbsp; She was one of four children.&nbsp; She attended school at 
Solid Center School and Stratton Schools, graduating from Stratton High 
School in 1953.On September 29, 1953, Doris married Dallas George Stevens at St. 
Charles Catholic Church in Stratton.&nbsp; To this union, six children were 
born; Dana, Debbie, Diane, Devona, Dee and Derek.In 1958, Doris and Dallas started D &amp; D Cleaners in Burlington, 
where she worked as a seamstress up until the time of her death.&nbsp; Doris’
 hobbies included sewing, coloring, taking pictures, gardening and 
listening to her music.&nbsp; She always kept in touch with her grandkids 
through texting and pictures, and she always loved a fresh bouquet of 
flowers.Preceding her in death were her parents, one daughter Debbie Knapp, 
her sister Donna Krei, and two brothers Bob and Duane Spurlin.She is survived by her husband Dallas of 67 years of Burlington, her 
children Dana Stevens of Burlington, Diane (Rob) Windell of Kanorado, 
KS, Devona (Randy) Jensen of Goodland, KS, Dee Herman of Denver, CO, 
Derek (Kara) Stevens of Burlington, and her son-in-law Butch Knapp of 
Burlington.&nbsp; She is also survived by nineteen grandchildren; Arianne 
Knapp, Krystal Knapp, Brett Knapp, Brian Windell, Denny (Delci) Windell,
 Mathew Windell, Andy Windell, Brooke (Brian) Bauman, Brielle (Colton)

Doris Elizabeth Stevens

Phyllis Joan Herrman, 88, passed away Saturday June 26, 2021, at 
Country Living of Larned. She was born June 28, 1932, in Great Bend, to 
Nelson &amp; Helen (DuBois) Stone. She married Hilbert Herrman August 
16, 1952, at Great Bend. He died December 14, 2013.

&nbsp;A lifetime Great Bend resident, Phyllis was the State of Kansas Meat
 Inspector. She had also worked for Great Bend Packing in Quality 
Control and performed clerical duties. She was a member of Prince of 
Peace Parish at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church and Altar Society. 
Phyllis loved shopping and was known for sending everyone she knew a 
card for special occasions or “just because”. She enjoyed Community 
concerts, gardening and was an excellent cook, and taking care of people
 and especially loved spending time with her grandchildren and great 
grandchildren.

Survivors include, three sons, Mark Herrman and wife Ginger, and Tim 
Herrman and wife Chris, all of Great Bend, and Scott Herrman and wife 
Bobbie of VA; four daughters, Karen Bruno of West Liberty, IA, Stacie 
Kozlowski and husband Bruce of Larned, Trina Detherage and husband Brad 
of Great Bend, and Lori Hoffman and husband Steve of Columbia, MO; 
brother James Nelson Stone, Jr of Great Bend; twenty grandchildren, 
twenty-two great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. She was 
preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Hilbert Herrman; and a 
brother, Shelby Stone, Sr.

Visitation will be held from 12:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., Monday June 28,
 2021, at Bryant Funeral Home, with family present to greet friend’s 5 
p.m. to 7:00 p.m.&nbsp; Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., June 29,
 2021, at Bryant Funeral Home, with Father Don Bedore presiding. 
Interment will be in the Hillcrest Memorial Park, Great Bend. Memorials

Phyllis Joan Herrman

Thomas Virgil Phelan passed away on Friday, January 22, 2021, at John C. Lincoln Memorial Hospital in Phoenix, Arizona at the age of 69. He was born on November 19, 1951 in Great Bend, Kansas. 

A Midwestern man at heart, he grew up in the small town of Holyrood, Kansas and attended Holyrood Rural High School, Barton County Community College, Fort Hays State University and Emporia State University. In his younger years, he worked for Air Midwest, Inc. and had the opportunity to travel the globe but loved Kansas most of all. 

A creative thinker and entrepreneur, Tom conceptualized, founded and operated Plum Creek Kennel with his brothers, Mark and John Phelan and friend Dave Robinette. He was a free spirit and his adventures have become family legends. In 2007, Tom moved to Phoenix, Arizona. 

A proud father and grandfather, he spent his later years supporting his grandchildren from the sidelines of all their sporting events and never turned down the opportunity to babysit. 

Tom is loved and adored by his daughter Tess, son-in-law Spencer and their children, Harper, Quinn and Arie Chupinsky and son Cody, daughter-in-law Lauren and their children Mya, Brooklyn and Parker Phelan. He is also survived by his sister Rita McCarthy and brothers, Patrick, Dennis, Mark and John Phelan, devoted friend Debbie Hughes and 14 nieces and nephews and their families.

Marilyn Kay (Heier) Caldwell, 81, of Grinnell, died Monday, June 21, 
2021. She was born November 22, 1939, in Oakley, KS, to Vince and Ferne 
(Beckman) Dickman. 
Marilyn graduated high school in 1956, from Sacred Heart Academy, in 
Wichita, KS. She then attended Marymount College, in Salina, KS, where 
she received a Bachelor’s Degree in Secondary Education, in 1960. Later,
 in 1980, Marilyn obtained a Master’s Degree, in Elementary Education, 
from Fort Hays State University. She taught at Bethune Colorado Public 
High School and then Grinnell Middle School for 25 years, before 
retiring in 1999. 
On June 15, 1961, Marilyn married Linus Heier and to this union five 
children were born. Linus passed away on December 31, 1999. On June 18, 
2005, Marilyn and Roger Caldwell were united in marriage. 
Marilyn spent her spare time gardening, sewing, knitting, baking, and 
traveling. She enjoyed attending and presenting at several spiritual 
retreats. Marilyn could visit with anyone, even those she just met. She 
loved attending her grandchildren’s events and treasured spending time 
with her family and friends. 
Marilyn was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, in 
Grinnell, where she taught high school religion classes and was part of 
St. Mary’s Altar Society. She was also a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, 
the National Alliance on Mental Health, KNEA, NEA, and was a nominee for
 the Kansas Teacher of the Year. 
Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents; husband Linus, and son-in-law Ray Shaheen. 
She is survived by her husband Roger, of Grinnell; children, Donita 
Bozarth, Gardner, KS, Michael (Tonya) Heier, Humbolt, IA, Bev (Kevin) 
Birney, Bucklin, KS, Christy “Pete” Shaheen, of Manhattan, KS and Larry 
Heier, of Grinnell, KS; 11 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; her

Marilyn K. Caldwell

Sarah A. (Travis) Wilson, 88, passed away Tuesday June 22, 2021, at her home in rural Abilene. She was born July 30, 1932, in Minneapolis, KS to John and Leloa (Bainbridge) Travis. Sarah graduated from Minneapolis High School, attended Brown Mackie Business College, Salina, and worked at Montgomery Wards in the office and later at Long McArthur Ford Company.

On October 2, 1953, she married Edwin W. “Ed” Wilson in Salina. They shared 64 years of marriage before he preceded her in death on January 21, 2018. Together they farmed in rural Carlton before retiring to rural Abilene in 1992.

Sarah loved her family deeply and was the mastermind of family gatherings. She hosted many family and holiday celebrations for her children, extended family, and neighbors and she made each one a special occasion. Her happiest days were when her family was visiting. She was an amazing baker and always made sure her grandchildren were spoiled with her special cookies, pies and cinnamon rolls.

Each summer you could witness Sarah’s love of nature. She spent many hours growing flowers, gardening and taking care of her yard. Her bird feeders were always full so she could watch her birds. She especially enjoyed seeing a particular red cardinal that she said was Dad look after her from Heaven. Sarah also enjoyed quilting and making gifts for her family. Each grandchild and great-grandchild received a quilt when they were born and also when they graduated from High School and her children have many of her works of art displayed in their homes. Collecting Dolls also gave her great joy.

During Sarah’s retirement years she was rarely still. She volunteered as an American Red Cross Gray Lady for many years as well as serving on the Card and Craft Committees at the Memorial Hospital in Abilene. Many summers were spent as part of the cooking crew in the Cabin at the Dickinson County Historical Pioneer Camp. She also served several years in the Mt. Pleasant Evangelical Presbyterian Church kitchen organizing funeral dinners.

She is proceed in death by her husband Ed, daughter, Barbara Jo at age 6 of meningitis, Son, John Walter at age 20 of Muscular Dystrophy, and great-grandson Nolan Matthew Petersen, 7 months and a sister Betty Gray of Cocoa Beach, Florida.

Survivors include three sons, Jeff and wife Susan of Carlton, Mitch and wife Denise of Abilene, Mike and wife Karen of Carlton; daughter, Kellie Voss and husband Wayne of Hays. 15 grandchildren, Michelle (Lance) Miller, Angela (Matt) Petersen, Shannon Wilson (John Goddard), Amanda (Brian) Pope, Courtney Wilson, Janay (Dylan) Crosson, Dustin Wilson, Brian Wilson, Eric (Kelsey) Wilson, Kristy Wilson, Keven Wilson, Allen, Aaron, Jordan and Ethan Voss; 11 great-grandchildren, Aubrey and Vance Miller; Willa and Crosby Petersen; Klayton and Violet Pope; Grady, Lincoln and Reagyn Crosson, Lane Wilson and John Voss, a sister-in law, Carol Hansen of Salina and many nieces and nephews.

Sarah A. (Travis) Wilson

Albert J. Zerr, age 81, of Quinter, KS peacefully passed away Wednesday, June 23, 2021, at Gove County Medical Center, LTC. Albert was the son of Frank A. and Albina (Ziegler) Zerr of Quinter, KS.&nbsp;

Albert attended Quinter schools graduating the class of 1957. After high school, he joined the Army and was stationed at Fort Riley. After his basic training, he was stationed in Germany, returning home in June of 1961.

On November 25, 1961, Albert was united in marriage to the love of his life, Aurilla (Glick) Zerr. They were married at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Park, KS. He lived his life in Gove County. Albert and Aurilla were married nearly 60 years and they were blessed with 5 children.&nbsp;

Albert worked side by side with his wife during their life doing farming, custom hay work, hay grinding and hauling grain.&nbsp;

Albert was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, and the Fraternal Order of Eagles (F.O.E.), WaKeeney, KS.&nbsp; Through the years, Albert became President of the F.O.E.in both local and state Aeries. He was very proud of his accomplishments in the organization and made many friends in his years of service whom he cherished.&nbsp; Albert also enjoyed coyote hunting, going to car races, Polka music and spending time with his friends and family.&nbsp;

Albert is survived by his wife Aurilla; sons Kirk Zerr (Deana) of Quinter and Terry Zerr of Wichita; daughters Sheree Flax (Darren) of Quinter and Bernice Spinden (Michael) of Cottonwood Falls, KS; brothers Elmer Zerr (Loretta) of Salina and Alfred Zerr (Mary Lou) of Tyler, TX; brother-in-law Ray Schroeder of Angelus, KS; 10 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.&nbsp;

He was proceeded in death by his parents; son Wade Zerr; and sister Dorothy Ann Schroeder.&nbsp;

 </figure>Albert J. Zerr, age 81, of Quinter, KS peacefully passed away Wednesday, June 23, 2021, at Gove County Medical Center, LTC. Albert was the son of Frank A. and Albina (Ziegler) Zerr of Quinter, KS.&nbsp;Albert attended Quinter schools graduating the class of 1957. After high school, he joined the Army and was stationed at Fort Riley. After his basic training, he was stationed in Germany, returning home in June of 1961.On November 25, 1961, Albert was united in marriage to the love of his life, Aurilla (Glick) Zerr. They were married at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Park, KS. He lived his life in Gove County. Albert and Aurilla were married nearly 60 years and they were blessed with 5 children.&nbsp;Albert worked side by side with his wife during their life doing farming, custom hay work, hay grinding and hauling grain.&nbsp;Albert was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, and the Fraternal Order of Eagles (F.O.E.), WaKeeney, KS.&nbsp; Through the years, Albert became President of the F.O.E.in both local and state Aeries. He was very proud of his accomplishments in the organization and made many friends in his years of service whom he cherished.&nbsp; Albert also enjoyed coyote hunting, going to car races, Polka music and spending time with his friends and family.&nbsp;Albert is survived by his wife Aurilla; sons Kirk Zerr (Deana) of Quinter and Terry Zerr of Wichita; daughters Sheree Flax (Darren) of Quinter and Bernice Spinden (Michael) of Cottonwood Falls, KS; brothers Elmer Zerr (Loretta) of Salina and Alfred Zerr (Mary Lou) of Tyler, TX; brother-in-law Ray Schroeder of Angelus, KS; 10 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.&nbsp;He was proceeded in death by his parents; son Wade Zerr; and sister Dorothy Ann Schroeder.&nbsp;Memorial contributions are suggested to the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Park, KS or the Quinter Senior Citizen Center. David Ray Beckner, age 71, of Kanorado passed away Sunday, June 13, 2021, at St. Luke’s Hospice House in Kansas City, MO.&nbsp;

David was born September 2, 1949, to Ray and Goldie (Chaney) Beckner 
in Goodland.&nbsp; He grew up and went to school in Goodland.&nbsp; On April 1, 
1994, he married Georgia Cecil.&nbsp; &nbsp;David worked construction for many 
years.&nbsp; He&nbsp;enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family and 
friends.&nbsp;

He is preceded in death by his wife, Georgia; parents, grandparents; brother, Dewey; and sister, Velma.&nbsp; &nbsp;

David is survived by his stepson, Jeff Harris of Kanorado, KS; 
stepdaughter, Sheri Jackson (Gerald Champine) of Kanorado, KS; brother,

David Ray Beckner

Steven Kelly Scott was born in 1948 in Studley, Kansas, the eighth of 16
 children born to Leroy W. and Mary M. Scott. He passed away February 
25, 2021, at the VA health complex in Prescott, Arizona, at the age of 
72. 
 He started first grade in Studley and later attended Hill City Grade
 School, Lucerne Country School and Sheridan Community High School in 
Hoxie, graduating in 1965. He wrestled, taking second in State his 
senior year. After attending Colby Community College, Steve was drafted 
into the United States Army and served in Vietnam. As with many war 
veterans, this experience stayed with him his whole life.
 After being honorably discharged from the Army, Steve moved to 
Arizona. He worked as a tour guide in the Grand Canyon area, both 
driving a bus and taking tours to the bottom of the canyon with the mule
 train. He also worked as a carpenter, plumber, air conditioner tech 
and at Papillion Helicopters. In 1984, Steve met his love, Martha 
Manygoats and they made their home in the Grand Canyon area. 
 Steve played guitar and sang with his family, friends and 
neighbors. He and his neighbors formed a band, the Red Butte Ramblers. 
Martha, music, friends and family were all very special to him. Steve’s 
kindheartedness, amiability, and ability to spin a yarn endeared him to 
everyone who knew him.
 Steve was preceded in death by his parents, sister Dixie Schmehr, 
brothers Danny, Victor, Bob and Pete Scott. His beloved wife Martha 
passed away April 10, 2021. He is survived by his siblings Tyrone, 
Mary Ann, Art (Cheryl), Bill, Diana, Carolynn, Mike, Joan, Carl, and 
John. He’s also survived by many nieces and nephews who had a big soft 
spot for their Uncle Steve. 
 The Scott family appreciates Steve’s other families – Martha’s 
family, his Army buddies and the many close friends and neighbors in 
northern Arizona with whom he shared love and support for years.
 A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 3, 2021, at 10:30 a.m.
 at the Studley Church, Studley, Kansas with inurnment at Lucerne 
Cemetery, rural Sheridan County. Lunch following at the Church of God 
hall in Hill Ciity, Kansas.

Hessel Merle Anderson, 65, passed away June 24, 2021 at the Sheridan 
County Health Complex in Hoxie, Kansas. He was born August 24, 1955 in 
Wichita, Kansas. He was adopted by Merle and Florence May (Moore) 
Anderson of Ruleton, Kansas. His parents moved the family north of 
Morland, Kansas where they made their home. Hessel graduated from High 
School with the class of 1975. He continued his education receiving his
 EMT ID. 
 Hessel married Linda (Borger) on April 1, 1977. They moved to Hoxie 
and owned HLA Conoco. Hessel served his community as EMT, volunteer 
firefighter, City Police Officer and retired as Sheridan County 
Undersheriff. Hessel was a member of Christ Community Church of Hoxie. 
 Hessel leaves to mourn his wife Linda of the home; his stepson, 
David Denio and wife Lacey of Hoxie, Kansas; four granddaughters, Lillie
 and Rosalie Denio of Hoxie, Kansas, Mercedes Chesney of Salina, Kansas,
 Skyler Denio of Wichita, Kansas; and sister, Relda Owens and husband 
Tony of Hill City, Kansas.

Robert “Bob” Wooding, 94, passed away peacefully at home June 24, 
2021. He was born in New Haven, Conn., on February 5, 1927, to Franklin 
and Bertha (Gilbert) Wooding. He married Bernice Ann Humiston, March 18,
 1950.

Survivors include his wife of the home; three children, Earle, Bettejane and Ben; grandchildren and great grandchildren.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. No services will be held.

Janice K. Kennedy, 79, of Wilson, Kansas, and former Russell, Kansas 
resident, died on Saturday, June 19, 2021, at the Russell Regional 
Hospital in Russell, Kansas.&nbsp;

Janice was born on March 21, 1942, in Wilson, Kansas, the daughter of
 Ernie and Neva (McCoy) Vanderbur.&nbsp; She grew up in Russell, Kansas, and 
graduated from Russell High School.&nbsp; She met, fell in love and was 
united in marriage to Benton L. Kennedy on December 28, 1963, in 
Russell, Kansas.&nbsp; From this union, Janice and Benton were blessed with 3
 children Kirby, Curt and Laina.&nbsp; She worked in the food service 
industry as a cook, working for several restaurants in the area.&nbsp; She 
was a longtime member of St. Mary Queen of Angels Catholic Church.&nbsp; She 
had many talents and passions and was most passionate about her faith 
and family.

Surviving family include her son Kirby W. Kennedy of Austin, Texas, 
Curt A. Kennedy of Russell, Kansas and Laina M. Sack of Phoenix, 
Arizona; sister Dixie Lamont of Downs, Kansas; 7 grandchildren and 12 
great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Benton on April 12, 2018, 2 brothers and 1 sister.

A celebration of Janice’s life will be held at 10:30 A.M. on 
Wednesday, June 30, 2021, at the Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in 
Russell, Kansas.&nbsp; Visitation will be from 9 A.M. to 8 P.M., Tuesday, 
June 29, 2021, at the mortuary, with the family present to great guests

He was united in marriage to Myrna Mai on September 6, 1969. They were later divorced. To this union, four children were born, Michael, Daniel, Tabitha and Gabriel. LuVerne mostly loved being around his family, and spending time with his grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. He worked for the Union Pacific Railroad, along with other ventures. Some of his hobbies included Dirt Track Racing, the scrap metal business, watching westerns and his dog, Princess. He was a member of the Eagle’s Lodge #3774, and the Knights of Columbus #4113. He was always happy to lend a helping hand and help anyone who asked.&nbsp;

Survivors include his son, Michael (Karla) Ghumm, WaKeeney; daughter, Tabitha (Tom) Wynn, WaKeeney; grandchildren, Joshua Ghumm, Cody Ghumm, Cameron Ghumm, Devon Ghumm, Rachelle Wynn, Nicholas Wynn, Joseph Wynn, Matthew Ghumm, Jacob Ghumm, and Christopher Ghumm, all of WaKeeney; great-grandchildren include, Josiah Lopez, Addison Lopez, Dylan Beydler, Daxton Ghumm, Brantleigh Ghumm, Briggs Ghumm, Brogan Ghumm, Weston Huss, and Boone Ghumm, due in September; brother, Ralph (Sue) Ghumm, Missouri and sister, Marian Hanks, WaKeeney.&nbsp;

Dr. David Sheppard, 68, passed away April 28, 2021, at his home in Hillsboro. He was born March 5, 1953, in Smith Center to Dr. R.G. and Eda (Lippitt) Sheppard. 

He was the Director of the Marion County Special Ed. Co-op. He married Marla Pruitt December 20, 1997, in Lawrence.
